For various reasons, the maintenance of shaft structures is becoming an increasingly important factor in the operation of underground mines. Deterioration mechanisms related to operation of the shaft are identified as corrosion, mechanical damage, fatigue damage and wear. Deterioration mechanisms related to rock movements are identified as vertical strain, ride vertical closure and squeezing. Analytical procedures for assessing this deterioration are discussed, and it is shown how acceptance criteria are developed and implemented. In order to track the deterioration of shaft structures, shaft inspections are undertaken, but the information is often not well documented. Formalised procedures for capturing and recording information, and then processing the information are presented. Finally, two case studies are briefly described to illustrate how these procedures have been implemented in practice, and what benefit has accrued to the mines concerned.

Mining and metals projects have tended to increase in both scope and cost to a point where many projects are Droperly designated as superprojects. Specialist engineer- constructors have developed organisations and systems to provide project management services during the design and construct phase of large projects. However, the engineer-constructor is also required to provide a wide spectrum of services during the evolution of large projects prior to the construction phase. Some common phases of pre-construction evolution are identified together with the associated types of specialised services which may be required. A project management team approach is described which has been developed for the design and construct phase. It is suggested that a modified matrix organisation could be adapted to the provision of special- ised services as well as to project management for ore-construction phases of the project.

Modern off-highway trucks have evolved over 30 years from small 20 ton units to vehic- les with capacities of up to 170 tons. Diesel engines are used by all manufacturers while transmissions are either mechanical or electri- cal. Development over the years has kept pace with component availability from engine, trans- mission and tyre manufacturers.Computer simula- tion studies are recognised for purposes of vehicle evaluation and costing under various op- erating conditions. Several manufacturers are currently manufacturing or evaluating vehicles with capacities of up to 260 tons. This paper describes the essential facts associated with the operation of off-highway trucks of the rear dump type in the mining industry.

Computerisation of mine planning activities, specifically in the areas of geology, design and surveying, has been in progress for a number of years in underground metalliferous mines. The combined capabilities of hardware and software have only recently reached the levels necessary to fully support integrated mine planning computer systems in a graphical three dimensional environment. Despite the apparent capabilities of systems now on the market, many sites retain significant parts of their older paper based systems, and employ a mix of two or more software packages. This paper examines what underground metalliferous sites are doing in this area in Australia, and discusses the factors which are inhibiting full implementation of fully integrated computerised systems. Future directions for further developments in the field are also briefly discussed.

The development of the Ballarat goldfield and of the city of Ballarat are a significant part of the history of the Australian mining industry. Important developments in technology, legislation and labour relations made their first Australian appearance in Ballarat. The growth of the city and its survival after the closure of the mines provide an interesting case study in the benefits flowing from a vigorous mining operation. The failure of the mines can be attributed to rising costs of materials and labour and declining manpower productivity at a time when the price of gold was not free to respond to changing market conditions. The curtailment of exploration programs and increasing labour unrest resulted from this situation, and made the closure of mines inevitable.

The aim of this paper is to emphasise the importance of knowing of the rate of the elementary flotation acts (EFA) - attachment and detachment. By studying the simplest linear model notion of the column flotation, the results of the nonlinear simulaton of flotation separation in the column with lengthwise upward mixing show two principal different types of separative mass-transfer in the column. The first is, the case of a small EFA intensity, almost without the detachment. The second is, the case of a big EFA rate, when the process is close to a local attachment-detachment equilibrium. There is also an attempt to estimate the EFA rate for three different kinds of quartz particles, floated by cation collector in the laboratory column apparatus.

Sulphide concentrates are produced in a wide range of mineral processing operations. In the case of base metals they are further treated by smelting and/or hydrometallurgical techniques. In the case of refractory gold ores, sulphide concentrates containing gold are roasted or oxidised by various hydrometallurgical processes. This paper discusses the development of the Activox(R) Process which can provide an alternative method for treating sulphide concentrates. This process consists of fine or ultra-fine milling, followed by mild pressure oxidation to produce solutions of base metals or to liberate refractory gold. Base metal solutions (eg of nickel and cobalt) can be further processed by solvent extraction and electrowinning, while refractory gold can be recovered by cyanidation. The economics of the Activox(R) Process are often better than alternative oxidation techniques.

The Wark has been conducting collaborative research through the AMIRA International P260 series of projects for over 20 years. This paper reviews specific outcomes of successful technology transfer to flotation plant practice over that time. Moreover, findings of an independent audit of industry users of the research outcomes of the P260 project are reviewed. The key to successful technology transfer is the active engagement of industry personnel at all phases of the technology transfer process. Other research outcomes include the novel application of new measurement tools and methodologies which include, for example, advanced surface analysis techniques. These new tools and methodologies have been pivotal to improving our understanding of factors that limit the flotation separation of minerals at plant scale. Future potential targets for technology transfer to improve flotation plant practice are discussed.

Western Europe, Japan, and the U.S. are reacting to these changes with varying degrees of confidence or timidity.Technical and economic developments continue to have a substantial effect on the fortunes of the mineral industries. However, they are increasingly influenced by social and political factors. Supply, demand, and trade patterns in the Pacific Rim Region will continue to be influenced by developments in other regions, such as southern Africa

The need for a carefully prepared set of special conditions, to be used with general conditions of contract or, alternatively, a purpose written contract for adoption in tunnelling work in Australia is discussed. Recent decisions on the proprietor's liability for tender information and arbitrator's power to award interest are examined. A new clause for inclusion in contracts specifically giving arbitrators power to award interest is suggested. Similarly, a new clause covering delays due to environmental disputes is suggested, particularly for marine outfall tunnels. An alternative method for the settlement of disputes by negotiation is suggested for consideration and contracts and contract administration are discussed as the possible weak point in the construction process. At the conference it is intended to present a method or process to be used in contract administration which should reduce disputes, result in a better quality and efficiency of administration and ultimately in better contracts'.

The A J Parker Cooperative Research Centre for Hydrometallurgy has recently been established by a major grant from the Australian Commonwealth Government. The participating institutions in this centre are the CSIRO Division of Mineral Products, Curtin University of Technology, Murdoch University and the Chemistry Centre (WA). The Australian Mineral Industries Research Association is also a partner. Information is presented about the research activities of the Parker Centre, which are focussed on the solid/solution interface. Three research programs have been established in the areas of leaching, precipitation and surface processes (adsorption). The initial projects within these three programs are described. Details are also given of the Centre's education program which include honours degree training, masters and doctoral degrees by research, a masters degree by course work and workshops. The importance of collaboration with industry to the successful operation of the centre is stressed.

This paper examines the methods and people required for the evaluation of project or corporate acquisitions. Experience over the past five years has shown that some growth can be achieved by carefully evaluated acquisition of gold projects within regions where the acquiring company has gold processing facilities. Many Western Australian companies have participated in this process and the trend seems likely to continue with a diminishing number of larger producing companies controlling through joint venture or direct purchase of widely spaced ore deposits. In some cases the acquisition may include ore processing facilities, however an increasing number of smaller project acquisitions, involving small open pit gold deposits, which are within trucking distance of the acquiring company's mill. Whilst gold prices remain at the current depressed level we can expect to see this trend continue.

The importance of orebody definition and optimisation in project development cannot be overstated. Inappropriate orebody definition is the single most important reason for project under performance and/or failure. Without the firm foundation of good orebody definition, the structure of a project cannot be assembled reliably. Many factors need to be considered in the process of orebody definition. These factors are well summed up in paragraph 123 of The Institute's Code and Guidelines for Assessment and Valuation of Mineral Assets and Mineral Securities (Valmin Code). The factors range from the initial geological data through assaying, geotechnical and hydrogeological factors to mining and metallurgical considerations. There are other factors which also need to be considered including marketing and environmental factors. This paper briefly reviews some of these factors and their impact on project development. Three examples are presented where one or more of these factors have had significant impact on the development of the Project.

This paper describes the planning mechanism and implementation of a progressive rehabilitation programme at Hunter Valley Mine in the Upper Hunter Valley of New South Wales. Hunter Valley Mine is a large open cut coal mine which produces approximately 7.0 million tonnes of coal (run of mine) annually for export. This production level involves the movement of some 60 million tonnes of waste and coal each year.The rehabilitation programme at Hunter Valley Mine has been developed to provide a combination of pasture, based on improved pasture species and timber belts to enhance the visual characteristics of the rehabilitated landform, whilst creating amenity in the form of shade for livestock.The operational philosophy for the rehabilitation programme is that of progressive rehabilitation. The best time to undertake rehabilitation is now.' As a result, planning for the rehabilitation programme is continuous, so that all site works are completed in time for vegetation establishment during the critical periods each year.

Skarns typically are zoned and the deposit- or district-scale zonation pattern is an important tool in exploration for skarn deposits. Zonation in individual deposits has been described in many publications, and the general zoning patterns have been summarised by Einaudi, Meinert and Newberry (1981), Meinert (1997), and Meinert, Dipple and Nicolescu (2005). Although zonation is present in most skarns as the result of a basic process of transferring heat and fluids from magmas to wall rocks, the specific zoning pattern in each skarn may vary greatly. For example some zones may be missing entirely or multiple zones may be telescoped. Such variations can be caused by several factors including depth of formation, magma composition, timing of the exsolution of magmatic aqueous fluids, redox state of the magma and redox state of the wall rocks. To use zonation as a predictive tool in skarn exploration, all the controlling factors have to be considered. In this study, we discuss some of the factors that may affect the zoning patterns in Ca skarns. Magnesium skarn has dramatically different mineralogy and is not discussed here. Electric arc furnace (EAF) dusts contain significant quantities of zinc, found almost entirely as either zinc oxide or zinc ferrite. The dust has been classified as a hazardous waste due to the relative high lead, cadmium and hexavalent chromium contents. It is important that environmentally acceptable processes be developed to treat this waste. One possible process involves reacting the zinc compounds in the dust with metallic iron, thus avoiding zinc vapour reoxidation by CO2 as occurs in carbon reduction processes. It consists of two stages where the first is the reduction of iron oxides to iron and the second the reduction of zinc oxide to zinc vapour by the iron. In this work the effects of operating variables such as temperature, CO/CO2 ratio and pressure on the recovery of zinc from an industrial EAF dust obtained from the Smorgon Steel Mill were investigated. Zinc recoveries in the second stage were found to approach 100 per cent at 1000oC after about four hours in nitrogen but within 40 minutes if a low vacuum was used.

Spatial modelling has been used to determine potential locations of granite-related nickel skarn mineralisation throughout eastern Australia. It is believed that during granite intrusion, fluid can leach nickel from nearby mafic lithologies and combine with sulfur to form nickel sulfides. Currently exploration for this style of deposit has been limited to the region around the Avebury Deposit in western Tasmania. As the lithologies near Avebury are not unique it is feasible that similar deposits could exist elsewhere in Australia. The weights of evidence spatial data modelling technique was used to evaluate the wealth of geological data available over eastern Australia and included known economic deposits as training data to weight the themes of the model. These weighted themes were combined to create a prospectivity map showing areas favourable for granite-related nickel deposits. Several regions were identified by the model to have good potential to host nickel mineralisation similar to the Avebury deposit. These include areas located throughout New South Wales, Victoria, Tasmania, the Tasman District of New Zealand and, in particular, the Rockhampton region of eastern Queensland. We have been exploring for minerals in Australia for over 100 years and our methods are constantly improving - but why do we pros- pect? Is the effort justified? Obviously the main motive is economic gain. It is now and always has been but conditions are changing rapidly. Once it was the prospector who could cash the nugget. Then it was the syndicate, the small company, an amalgamation of small companies, the large company, the corporation; the multinational corporation - where do we go from there? Early there was personal satisfaction and excitement in out-door activity which gave scope for individual energy, hope and in some cases reward. There still remains the satisfaction, either individual or corporate that a mineral discovery creates new wealth and makes a contribution to the nation's well being. Parallel with developments has always been the growth of restraints on exploration, frequently out of phase with the current mineral developments - miners' rights, licences, titles, royalties, mining laws and regulations, taxation etc. As the operations have become more complex so the restraints have become more confining until it is now very necessary to question whether the chances of economic gain justify the risk and responsibility of mounting costly mineral exploration leading-to extensive capital development.

The Victorian State Government recognises that the extensive brown coal deposits in Victoria are one of the State's key competitive strengths for economic development. The unique properties of the coal, together with the ease of open cut mining, make it suitable for a variety of new applications. Research and development activities are centred around applications which take advantage of the natural attributes and unique properties of the coal. The high reactivity and low ash content of the coal led to its selection for the Japanese brown coal liquefaction pilot plant currently operating in the Latrobe Valley, with support from the Victorian Government and the Coal Corporation of Victoria. Research and development of new brown coal based products together with many other areas of applied and fundamental research are being conducted in Victoria by Government research organisations, tertiary insti- tutions and private industry, with the objective of establishing new indus- trial developments based on Victoria's vast brown coal resource.
