The needs for improved technology for the mineral industry are widely recognised and a summary list is given. Ways in which technology has been introduced into the industry are discussed, as are the means by which the general process of technology transfer takes place. Some possible sources of improved and new technology are considered, together with the constraints to its introduction into the industry. Responses to recent external influences on the industry are discussed in relation to their effects on technology development.

The principles of occupational risk evaluation resulting from the improper ventilation of the underground mines were presented. It was shown that the risk level implies the appropriate planning and usage of prevention methods. That approach is fundamental in the ventilation, fire and climate safety management in the copper ore mines. The paper uses the adequately modified Risk Score method.

High resolution airborne multi-spectral scanner data (MSS) has proven suitable for a number of applications including environmental management and monitoring. Major underground gold mine developments are not common in Australia especially when they are totally owned and hence financed by a relatively small public company. Ballarat Goldfields Limited with its Ballarat East Project is such a company. Financing a $20m underground exploratory access programme in a poor economic climate places added importance on the quality of the project. Critical factors such as ore reserves, environment, planning and the development program are of immense importance in devising and implementing a workable finance package that satisfies both the shareholder and the project's needs.

The natural semiconducting mineral rutile and sphalerite exhibited highly photocatalytic activities on degradation of methyl orange under visible light irradiation. The isomorphous substitutions of host metal ions by foreign ions and other defect states in natural semiconductors altered the band structure, decreased the intrinsic band gap, and then made them very attractive for solar energy utilisation. Our study indicated that natural semiconductor minerals might be suggested as a new class of cost-effective and solar light-responsive photocatalyst.

Since 1985 there has been a revival in the alluvial gold mining industry in North Queensland. However, not all mines which have been established have been successful, some times due to a misconception that alluvial mines are quick to establish and easy to operate. The Greenvale Joint Venturers, Metals Exploration Queensland Pty. Ltd. and Freeport Queensland Nickel Incorporated, use ten Herreshoff roasters, for the reduction of ground lateritic nickel and cobalt containing ores.Initially the roasting section of the plant limited production, due to high down time.The use of technology developed and adapted over a number of years has achieved significant increase in on line time and a minimization of costs.

The majority of coke in Australia is made in by-product slot ovens at steelworks in Port Kembla, Newcastle and Whyalla. Most of the coals for these plants come from New South Wales but a regular proportion of Queensland coals may be introduced. The plants and the coals are reviewed in the paper.

Stope control information at the C.S.A. mine is obtained by diamond drilling inclined holes from within the stapes. Practical mining outlines are determined from complicated ore contours by a joint mining engineering and geological study. Production holes to achieve this outline are individually marked up and checked. Stope control also extends to selective mucking of ore mixtures for metallurgical reasons and to marginal ore and waste mixtures for economic reasons.

Because of the more complex nature of these operations a large number of alternatives for mine design are available, and the constraints associated with these designs are discussed. REGCHEM is a geochemical database containing stream sediment geochemical analyses compiled from open file mining company exploration reports. The database contains data on over 21 000 samples that have each been analysed for several elements such as gold, silver, arsenic, copper, lead and, zinc.   REGCHEM is supported by GEOEXPL - a custom written computer software application which operates under Microsoft Access. The data can be plotted as maps using a geographic information system (GIS) package called MapInfo, which can incorporate data from other data sets such as mineral deposit sites from the geological resource map database, GERM.

This paper discusses the identification and assessment of risk for mining developments particularly for open pit mining. A distinction between sensitivity studies and risk analysis is developed, demonstrating the importance of geological and mining engineering judgement -as applied by experienced practitioners to the analysis and assessment of risk in such projects. A pilot plant evaluation of the Savmin process, for the purification of mine water was commissioned by Anglogold and conducted at the Stilfontein Gold Mine, Margaret Shaft at Stilfontein in the North West province of South Africa. The purpose of the project was to obtain the operating conditions and operating costs, to produce different qualities of product water, as well as design parameters for upscaling to an industrial plant. The project was undertaken by AngloGold and Mintek of South Africa.

There are a number of methodologies which can be used for the preparation of environ- mental impact statements. Selection of a method depends upon the type of project and the environmental characteristics of the area where it is to be built. Most methods are satisfactory for assessing impacts on the physical environment but less so for the biological. Major problems may arise in deal ing with sociological issues because value judgements are involved. Several methods of approaching problems of this nature have been tried with some limited success.

Research and investigations have been carried out by government authorities, mining companies and academic institutions. Protection of the physical and biological environments is a vital part of any mine oper- ation. The Mineral Sands Mining Industry in New South Wales is successfully working within the State's environmental framework and is meeting; community requirements and expectations concerned with the environment and mine rehab- ilitation.
