The pervasiveness of poor sampling practices in and around mineral processing plants could seem intriguing in view of the various documented evidences both for causes and consequences. To this extent, this paper revisits the well-documented but lesser-known fact that failure to care sufficiently about how samples are selected and managed is the mother source of almost all sampling biases. The authors believe that the potentially huge leverage between causes and consequences as well as the diversity of people involved in sampling call for a globally integrated solution rather than for a point solution. Such a globally integrated solution has already been put forward by the AMIRA P754 Metal accounting – code of practice and guidelines (AMIRA, 2007) that inherently requires accuracy to be targeted, measured, reported and managed. Furthermore, always in order to avoid a point solution, several layers of protection against biases must be put in place with each one involving a different ownership whenever possible. This is exactly the role intended by the supervisory bias detection method described in this publication. It is based on the continuous monitoring of the expected value of reduced residuals obtained from statistical data reconciliation conducted in a metal accounting context. Ti-added ultra-low carbon (ULC) steel is produced by adding Al and Ti during the secondary refining process to deoxidise molten steel and to bind C and N which are detrimental to the deep drawing quality of the steel product. However, the production of Ti-added ULC steel faces challenges, including submerged entry nozzle clogging and surface defects on cold rolled coils. The troubles were often attributed to ‘Al-Ti complex inclusions’ in the molten steel. However, the evolution of oxide inclusions including their stability has been still unclear. In the present study, the evolution of these inclusions in Ti-added ULC steel was investigated by phase diagram measurement, CALPHAD thermodynamic modelling, high-temperature stability test for the oxides, and observation of transient behaviour of oxide inclusions in the steel. The phase diagram of the Al-Ti-O system was elucidated with an emphasis on oxygen potential, which significantly controls the stability of the oxides. CALPHAD thermodynamic models and a self-consistent database were developed. The transient behaviour of Al-Ti complex inclusions in Ti-added ULC steel was observed in situ using a confocal scanning laser microscope. This was additionally validated by the new thermodynamic model. The equilibrium phases of the oxide inclusions were investigated using a high-temperature resistance furnace, and were analysed using a secondary electron microscope, energy dispersive spectrometer, and electron back-scattered diffraction. By considering the morphology and crystal structure of these inclusions, the evolution of Al-Ti oxide inclusions was elucidated. Various behaviour of Al-Ti inclusions and their influence on steel cleanliness are discussed.

The long continuing controversy over the Origin of fusain, whether it is a product of primeval forest fires, or of special conditions of weathering (including bacterial decay) of the vegetal debris concerned prior to, burial, has now been extended, to include the possibility that fusain is a product of the coalifaction process subsequent to deposition, so that doubt may reach even to its time of formation.The conflicting views on this point are summarised in the following quotations from two recent publications (my italics in each quotation):1. "Recent observations made in peat and brown coal deposits in Australia, England and Germany strongly suggest that practically all fusain is formed by coalifaction after deposition and 'preliminary compression. In deposits of advanced brown coal rank, it normally takes the shape of pieces of wood compressed parallel to the bedding plane; and some fragments consisting partly of fusain and partly of vitrain exhibit the same amount of compression throughout. This would seem to indicate fusinisation after burial, as hard brittle charcoal would be crushed, or else retain its original irregular shape if strong enough to withstand pressure.In some immature deposits, however, where cover is of a hydrostatic nature rather than a vertical compressionar force, occasional pieces of fusinised wood showing very little flattening are present, but such immature deposits seldom contain the proportion of fusain found in higher rank coals. In view of this, and the possibility of introduction of charcoal into peat deposits, it is felt that a small amount of the fusain in coal may represent wood charred before burial, but most of it almost certaInly originated as a product of fusinisation after burial" (Dulhunty, 1948, p.14).

Much of western New South Wales is characterised by an extensive regolith formed during more than 60 million years of exposure, weathering and erosion. This cover includes intensely weathered in situ regolith and superimposed transported materials of variable thickness, commonly in complex palaeochannel systems. Mineral exploration in this region has been considerably hampered by the cover, which can complicate or maskgeochemical anomalies and also obscure geophysical signatures. A detailed multi-disciplinary study of part of this region, centred on the Cobar-Girilambone area has demonstrated a methodology for exploring through this regolith. The approach involves regolith-landform mapping to establish the main landscape and palaeolandscape elements and to determine the nature and spatial occurrence of different regolith materials. By combining knowledge of the surface distribution of different regolith-landform units with available 3D information on the regolith and geophysical data it is possible to construct simplified derivative maps or exploration ægoÆ maps, which can be used to advise appropriate exploration strategies or help interpret acquired exploration data. This study has also established the major regolith controls on geochemical dispersion and determined key background element associations. These regolith-related element associations can result in highly variable background levels for many trace elements and need to be understood and factored into the analysis of geochemical data for different regolith sampling media. With better knowledge of the regolith it is possible to select the most appropriate exploration techniques and sampling media for a given area, as well as apply appropriate normalisation procedures to the acquired data. Exploration success can be greatly improved by using many existing techniques in æregolith smartÆways.

The South West Rail Link (SWRL) project involved construction of a rail line to service new residential areas in south-west Sydney. The 11 km rail line is conveyed through a short tunnel at shallow depth where it crosses beneath the eight lanes of the Hume Highway. The underpass location is one of the most heavily trafficked within Sydney’s motorway network.The New South Wales Roads and Maritime Services (Roads and Maritime), as the owner of the highway asset, had the responsibility of managing the risks to the highway and traffic associated with the tunnelling project from the pretender stage through to completion. This paper considers the primary risks and mitigation measures employed, including geotechnical investigation, and development of appropriate construction constraints and concept design of an extensive real-time survey system to monitor pavement deformation during the tunnel works.The geology comprises fresh Minchinbury Sandstone in the tunnel invert and side walls, and variably weathered Bringelly Shale in the haunch and crown. Few tunnels have been excavated in these rock types in Sydney, and there is little information relating to the in situ stresses and stress-relief deformations in these materials.During tunnel construction the monitoring data indicated unexpected surface heave of up to about 24 mm. A multiparametric back-analysis of the deformation data is presented, which provides information on the deformation mechanisms and key geotechnical parameters, including rock mass modulus and in situ stresses.The approaches and methodologies developed for the SWRL underpass were effective in maintaining the safe operation and traffic capacity of the highway throughout the construction period, and the analysis of the monitoring data provides a useful reference for similar future projects, or projects constructed in similar ground conditions.CITATION:Clarke, S J and Walker, C S, 2014. The paper deals with the problem of managing the supplies of consumables (energy resources, lubricants, explosives, explosive supplies, tires, spare parts, etc) in mines. After the introductory remarks and comments, a general stochastic model of supply, relating in general to the dynamic programming method is presented. A selection of stochastic supply model for experiments and research by the authors of this paper is not a coincidence, based on of their long experience, showing that this type of model is the most suitable to provide support for decision-making and management of supplies of consumables in mines.In order for the problem?of?consumables?supply?management to be reviewed, in whole and objectively from the aspect of risk, experimental tests of the stochastic model in real conditions were performed at the limestone open pit mine æZelenikovecÆ near Skopje, the capital of Macedonia. The scope of the experimental research enabled reliable analysis. The results obtained confirm the efficiency and reliability of the stochastic model and two separate manipulative-operational positions regarding its application, which may have an important influence on the optimisation of supplies.

O.B.E., the third New Zealander to be honoured with Honorary Membership of The Institute. Sir William Hudson and Mr. C. H. Benney were the others.Mr. Bradshaw has been an Affiliate Member of The Institute since the formation of the New Zealand Branch in 1966. Like his friend Matt Benney. Bob Bradshaw is an accountant by training. Last June he retired as senior partner of the firm of chartered accountants, now known as Wilkinson Wilberfoss, with which he served from January 1929.Mr. Bradshaw grew up in New Zealand attending the Terrace School in Wellington, the New Plymouth Boys' High School where he was a boarder, and completing a Bachelor of Commerce at the university now known as the Victoria University of Wellington. He is an elected Fellow of the New Zealand Society of Accountants and an Associate of the United Kingdom Institute of Cost and Works Accountants.

Recent research has highlighted the potential of a relatively new style of gold mineralisation related to granite intrusion. New discoveries in Alaska, Central Europe and Asia and Eastern Australia with total resources of 1600 t Au offer attractive targets for regional exploration in areas which may have been overlooked in the past. A spatial information system was developed to target granite-gold systems in eastern Australia and the West coast of New Zealand, using well constrained geological and exploration models derived from current research. Target areas were recognised in Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria, Tasmania and on the West Coast of the South Island of New Zealand that have similar spatial data relationships to known granite gold mineralisation elsewhere in the world. The second phase of the modelling better constrained the regional scale target areas by including more detailed geological, geochemical and geophysical data in the GIS to develop prospect-scale targets and to allow the acquisition of tenements over these areas. A geological review of each target area was carried out in the field to put the GIS models into context. The fieldwork has highlighted the potential for this style of mineralisation in New Zealand and will increase investment in mineral exploration and development in New Zealand in the near future.

Filters are used in water treatment and hydrometallurgical process plants for objectives such as generating a dry spadable solid, pumpable high density slurry or high purity filtrate. The priority objective of every polishing filter, sometimes also termed clarifying filters is high purity filtrate and these are found in many diverse industries and even different applications within the same industry.To generate a high purity filtrate, process designers have the choice of many different polishing filter products, but in reality very few polishing filters are based on fundamentally different filtering concepts.This paper reviews the technology merits of well-known and the more recently developed polishing filter products and aims to assist metallurgists and engineers with the selection of an appropriate polishing filtration technology for pregnant liquor filtration and other process applications, plus a guide to best practice.CITATION:Shipard, S, 2013. The behaviour of tailings under cyclic loading has an impact on the stability and deformation of tailings dams and a good understanding of the cyclic behaviour of the tailings under earthquakes is important for tailings engineers and tailings operators for the design and safe operation of tailings dams. This paper presents an investigation into the cyclic behaviour of tailings using both laboratory cyclic direct simple shear (DSS) testing and numerical modelling. The laboratory testing involved cyclic DSS tests on gold tailings and zinc-copper tailings under different loadings and loading frequencies. The gold tailings specimen tested at a higher loading frequency and a higher cyclic stress ratio experienced spontaneous liquefaction during cyclic shearing and the zinc-copper tailings specimen tested at a lower loading frequency and a similar cyclic stress ratio exhibited ductile behaviour and liquefied due to cyclic mobility. The liquefaction behaviour of the tailings was modelled using an advanced constitutive model (UBCSAND), which was developed specifically to model soil liquefaction and strain softening under cyclic loading. The constitutive soil model presents the nonlinear soil behaviour under dynamic loading using a hyperbolic stress-strain relation. Dynamic analyses were carried out using a finite difference program FLAC. The cyclic stress-induced excess pore water pressures measured in the laboratory were modelled using numerical simulations of the laboratory tests under different loading conditions. The results of the non-linear dynamic analyses demonstrated the capability of numerical modelling of cyclic shearing induced excess pore water pressure and the onset of the spontaneous liquefaction. The laboratory investigation and numerical modelling technique provided the key properties and parameters for the dynamic analyses to assess the stability and deformation of tailings dams under design earthquake events. More importantly, the laboratory tests and numerical modelling provided some insights into liquefaction behaviour of the tailings during earthquakes. CITATION:Li, A, Laxman, M and Jinto, H, 2018. Over the past seven years, a combination of New Zealand-, Australian- and German-led research voyages using the research vessels Tangaroa, Southern Surveyor, and Sonne respectively, have revolutionised our understanding of the Kermadec-Tonga arc-backarc systems. This convergent margin is the most seismically-active subduction zone system on Earth with convergence rates steadily increasing northwards from the Hikurangi Trench to ~250 mm/year at northern Tonga. In combination with the intra-oceanic setting, factors potentially producing magmatic, tectonic, and hydrothermal variability in this system include an increase in potentially subductable sediment northwards along-strike, intersection of the Louisville Ridge (hot-spot chain) and Osbourn Trough (paleo-spreading centre) with the arc at ~25¦S, and the possibility of Samoan (hot-spot) plume ingression in the northern Lau Basin. The bulk of the magmatism is submarine; whereas only a few emergent (some transient) volcanic islands exist, about 80 submarine volcanic centres of significant size (>1000 m above surrounding sea floor) are present between White Island in the south to north of Tafahi in Tonga. About 35 per cent of these centres are hydrothermally active. Important petrogenetic features of the volcanic rocks along this arc system are the abundance of rhyolite (some quartz-amphibole-bearing), and the outcrop of primitive olivine-clinopyroxene-phyric basalts in satellite cones of the major edifices. Many of the edifices consist of complex caldera systems. Eruptions from and degradation of these edifices were probably tsunamigenic. Many of the hydrothermal systems developed within the edifices are likely destroyed during the sector collapses which are the characteristic edifice degradation mode. There are three backarc spreading systems along this margin: the Havre Trough, Valu Fa-Eastern Lau Spreading Centre, and the nascent Fonualei Rifts. The latter are particularly notable in having captured the entire suprasubduction zone magmatic flux for a distance of about 150 km, shutting down the adjacent volcanic front arc volcanoes.

Understanding the fundamental principles governing the reactions at surfaces has always been the goal of theoretical surface science. The atomistic simulation techniques have been used to calculate the surface structures and the stability of quartz and wollastonite, and their adsorption behaviour in the presence of molecular and dissociative water, and the two widely used collector head group molecules of methanoic acid and methylamine. The dissolution behaviour of wollastonite has also been modelled. The calculated surface energy, hydration energy and reaction energy values have been examined and discussed in the light of flotation literature. These studies have given an insight into the interactions at atomic level, which indicate that modelling techniques should be capable of predicting the adsorption behaviour and to design the selective collector molecules, which is of central importance to the mineral processing technique of flotation.

The Early Proterozoic metamorphic rocks of the Broken Hill (BH) Block have been recently subdivided into sixteen formations and four groups (Willis et al., 1983b, Stevens et al., 1983). This stratigraphic subdivision has relied upon recognition of distinctive mapped rock units and "associations" of mapped rock units, which characterize particular lithostratigraphic units. The rock units and rock unit associations define local ordered sequences which can be compared and correlated, thereby establishing the stratigraphic succession. In the Clevedale homestead, Thackaringa, BH City, Bores Mine-Freyers mine, Silver King mine, and Brewery Well areas, coherent stratigraphic successions have been interpreted. These areas illustrate the regional variability of the stratigraphic succession and facies changes within individual stratigraphic units. Stratigraphic type sections are located in the Thackaringa, Bores Mine-Freyers mine, Silver King mine, and Brewery Well areas. The principles of stratigraphic interpretation applied in the BH Block can be used in other areas of Willyama Supergroup outcrop such as the Euriowie, Olary and Mount Painter Blocks. The general technique may also have applicability to other highly deformed and metamorphosed terrains.

The estimation of the grinding mill charge weight is vital to ensure its efficient performance. Mill underloading or overloading can cause losses through decreased production or unplanned down time. Metso Minerals Process Technology Asia Pacific and South America (MMPT) has developed two systems for measuring mill load. The first is an acoustic system (SmartEarÖ) and the second is an online model-based charge estimation system. The aim of both systems is to facilitate better operation of grinding mills. SmartEarÖ performs analysis on an audio signal from the mill and allows each different frequency component to be viewed, analysed and used in process control for load estimation. By isolating different frequencies, SmartEarÖ can give an estimate of mill load. The online dynamic mill model uses measurable mill parameters (such as power) to predict the current total load. Kalman filtering can also be utilised to further increase the accuracy of the model. Both of MetsoÆs systems have been installed at BHP BillitonÆs Cannington mine to measure the load within their autogenous (AG) mill. In this paper, the methods of mill load estimation are reviewed and compared to the bearing pressure reading, which is the current method used by Cannington to control mill load. The redundant estimates of mill load provide increased confidence and consequently more robust grinding operation under a wide range of conditions.

A major problem that has continued to plague the surface and underground coal industries is blast induced damage to the coal seam. Blasting Analysis International, in conjunction with a number of other organizations, has continued to address this concern through 14 years of field research in 68 full-scale production environments worldwide. Compiled results were obtained from varying field conditions. These included single and multiple seam coal mines, horizontal, rolling and steeply dipping coal seams and varied borehole diameters (ranging from 102 to 381 mm) and when using various explosive formulations. Results are discussed in detail along with the tools, test methods and analysis techniques to identify and quantify the problems. Over ten major causes of coal damage were identified. A number of practical and economic recommendations are presented that can benefit the entire coal and blasting industry especially in commercial operations whose economic growth relies heavily upon recovering an undamaged coal seam.

Statistical techniques of Box and Jenkins (1976) have been used to assess the existing control schemes and determine the dynamics of flash smelting furnace at the Kalgoorlie Nickel Smelter. Pertinent process variables, such as, oxygen flow, flux flow, matte grade and iron to silica ratio in slag, were considered in the analysis using routine operating data collected over two periods of operation. Results indicate inadequate control of some of the important variables. Dynamic characteristic parameters (dead time and response time) between a set of input and output variables were identified to improve optimisation of the existing thermodynamic model used for flash furnace control.

At Port Latta in Tasmania, Savage River Mines operates vertical shaft furnaces for the firing of pelletised magnetite concentrates. At times the temperature profile of the furnace has changed markedly, necessitating the- burning of greater quantities of fuel to maintain good pellet quality. A study of the oxidati=of magnetite concentrates was under- taken because this exothermic process supplies much of the heat required to indurate the pellets. Using the thermal analyses methods, different magnetite concentrates from Australian and overseas were heated in air under identical conditions, to compare rates of oxygen uptake and of heat release. In addition, a compari- son was made of the oxidation behaviour of different particle size fractions of a selected concentrate. Particle size analyses, x-ray diffraction and dilatometer tests were used to aid inter pretation of the thermal analysis traces. The investigation emphasized the importance of particle size and ferrous iron content in determining' oxidation rates from the commencement of heating.
