These may be found with goethite through mechanisms including direct substitution or coprecipitation of nanocrystalline phases. Understanding P incorporation in goethite has significant implications for Australia’s iron ore industry as it lowers their commodity value. The current study tests a novel low-temperature technique to extract P impurities from synthetic goethite phases under O2-free ambient conditions by utilising Fe(II)-catalysed recrystallisation. The objective of this study was to examine the effect of the Fe(II)-catalysed recrystallisation of goethite on the geochemical behaviour (mobility and speciation) of co-associated P. To achieve this, we tracked changes in labile P (aqueous and 1M NaOH extractable) concentrations over time in goethite suspensions which were reacted with Fe(II)aq for 14 days under circumneutral pH conditions and room temperature conditions. Temporal changes in Fe mineralogy were investigated via synchrotron-based X-ray absorption spectroscopy. Iron K-edge extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectroscopy confirmed goethite as the only mineral phase in P-free treatments while goethite (~86 per cent) and feroxyhyte (~14 per cent) were the main phases in 1.0 per cent P-containing treatments after a 14- day reaction with Fe(II)aq. According to our findings, the treatment of P-goethite with Fe(II) for a duration of 7–14 days, followed by a 24-hour extraction of the reacted solids using 1M NaOH, results in the removal of approximately 79.5 per cent of the initial P content. This removal encompasses both the aqueous fraction (~4.5 per cent) and the surface adsorbed fraction (~75 per cent) from the 1 per cent P-bearing mineral phase. Notably, this approach demonstrates an improvement in P extractability, with approximately a 10 per cent increase compared to the 1 per cent P-goethite sample that was not reacted with Fe(II).

The northeast-southwest trending ~25 km2 area incorporating Bald Hill is located 18 km northeast of Haast, and 5 - 7 km west of the Alpine Fault in South Westland, New Zealand. The geology consists of Greenland Group greywacke overlain by a Cretaceous-Tertiary sedimentary sequence and fluvio-glacial/marine terrace deposits of Quaternary age. Alluvial gold in Cole Creek, draining west from the summit of Bald Hill, may be derived either from vein mineralisation in basement rocks or from fluvial or marine terraces.   This paper focuses on the potential for in situ gold and base-metal mineralisation in sporadic, siderite-rich quartz veins that cut basement greenschist facies metasediments that have been overprinted by contact metamorphism.   Throughout the area, vein compositions are dominated by quartz and commonly feature zoned plagioclase. Alteration adjacent to veining within the contact aureole is dominated by 1 - 2 mm, coarse grained biotite, with small amounts of sulphide, and is pervaded by abundant siderite veinlets. Outside the aureole, wall rock alteration to veins consists of fine grained chlorite. Trace element XRF analysis has been used to ascertain base metal concentrations within samples of vein and alteration zones collected from throughout the area. Vein and alteration zone mineral assemblages containing <5 per cent sulphide, with low concentrations of As, Cu, Pb and Zn indicate low potential for gold and base-metal mineralisation in the Bald Hill region. Contact metamorphism of Greenland Group basement in the northeast of the region, is likely due to emplacement of a poorly exposed Cr- and Ni- enriched gabbro. The presence of biotite and andalusite in hornfelses indicate contact metamorphism occurred at temperatures >350¦C and at depths <10 km. Widespread vein distribution does not appear to be related to contact metamorphism or gabbro emplacement. Further research is required in order to establish the fluid source from which the veins were precipitated.

Enumerating active sea floor hydrothermal sites has been a challenge since their discovery almost 40 years ago. High-temperature hydrothermal sites are readily discoverable, primarily by detecting mineral-laden plumes, but working at these sites poses severe environmental and operational difficulties. Low-temperature vent fields, which may represent waning of venting from high-temperature systems, may be more accessible but are more difficult to locate. Over the last decade, however, oxidation-reduction potential (ORP; aka Eh) sensors capable of detecting minute concentrations of reduced hydrothermal chemicals have been successfully used to pinpoint such fields. In this extended abstract, we use ORP anomalies observed during continuous (towed sensor) plume surveys to estimate site frequency along four intermediate- to fast-spreading ridge sections. From these data, we estimate site frequencies between five and 16/100 km for these ridge sections. Previous camera surveys on the fast-spreading East Pacific Rise support these frequencies. These rates are much greater than the frequency of ~0.5–5/100 km, generally increasing with spreading rate, derived from well-surveyed ridge sections in the InterRidge database (InterRidge, 2014). Australian steelmakers produce up to 30 000 t/yr of electric arc furnace (EAF) dust. Current disposal techniques include sending EAF dust to landfill, stockpiling, and paying zinc smelters or registered waste removalists/processors to take the dust. Many of the complex overseas pyrometallurgical and hydrometallurgical treatment routes cited in the literature are not considered economic. Governmental, environmental and social pressures on producers to consider more sustainable disposal options are mounting, and there is now a strong push to consider recovering potentially valuable or recyclable components, such as zinc and iron units, from EAF dust. As well, there remain strong economic drivers for producers to find lower cost disposal solutions. Characterisation studies undertaken at CSIRO Minerals have revealed important physical differences in the nature of the zinc- and iron-bearing phases contained in domestic EAF dusts. These differences have been exploited using simple and cheap mineral processing techniques such as water washing, wet cycloning and wet magnetic separation. This has allowed a significant upgrade in the zinc content of EAF dust to be achieved, together with a reduction in the levels of key smelter penalty elements, such as chlorides and fluorides. The zinc-rich portion of the dust is now a more attractive smelter feed while the iron-rich part of the dust could potentially be briquetted or pelletised with a reductant and recycled to recover iron, and thus close the loop on dust processing. The basis of the separations tested together with laboratory results from several Australian dust samples are presented and discussed in this paper.

The Olympic Dam copper/uranium deposit was discovered in 1975 and subsequently commenced production in 1988 at a rate of 1.5 Mtpa using the sublevel open stoping mining method. In the following five years the operation underwent two optimisation programs that have increased mine output to the current rate of 3.4 Mtpa of ore. The pre-expansion requirements were annual development of approximately 10 000 m and the placement of around 500 000 m 3 /yr of cemented backfill. Previous to 1995 all hoisting was carried out by the Whenan shaft. The Robinson shaft was commissioned during that year to hoist increasing development mullock tonnages and to allow for increased ore hoist via the Whenan system. In 1996 WMC committed to expanding the output of the operation from 85 000 tpa (1996/97 budget) copper metal to 200 000tpa. The corresponding increase in mine ore production requires expansion to a nominal rate of 9.0 Mtpa. To achieve these increased tonnages, major hardware installations will include sinking of a third shaft capable of hoisting in excess of 9.5 Mtpa, a rail haulage horizon utilising automatic trains, expansion of the existing backfill plant to a production capacity of over 1.8 million m 3 /yr, increasing long term development rates to 15 000 m/yr and increasing the production drilling and blasting rates in line with the higher stope production output. This paper provides detail into the intended hardware (shafts, equipment, etc) of the mining system, and outlines the intended long-term operation and management of the operation. Of particular note is the background requirement of ensuring existing production targets are met to provide critical cashflows into the project during the period of expansion.

The Peak Gold Mines Pty Ltd (PGM) operations are located approximately 9 km south of Cobar, NSW. PGM currently mines and treats ore from three separate orebodies within 5 km of the original plant. Production from the original Peak orebody ceased in April 2002, with ore currently sourced from underground at New Occidental and Perseverance, while New Cobar supplies ore from an open cut mine. In March 2003, Wheaton Minerals Asia Pacific purchased the operation from Rio Tinto who operated the mine for around ten years. The Perseverance deposit is situated between 600 and 1000 m south of the Peak orebody. Access is via shaft from Peak to 630 m below surface and then by decline to the northern end of the deposit locally known as Zone A. Development of the resource commenced mid 2002 to set up for a long hole open stoping operation at 25 m level spacing. The first production stope was successfully brought on line December 2003. The Perseverance deposit is hosted by sediments and volcanics along the eastern margin of the Devonian Cobar basin and is one of many deposits with the Cobar Gold Field. The Cobar Gold Field has produced approximately 2.5 million ounces of gold since 1880. The Perseverance area had long been considered prospective due to the presence of old workings at the southern extensions of Peak line of lode. Significant mineralisation was first discovered at Perseverance in 1994 when PGM drilled a hole targeted 950 m below the historic workings. The target was based on an apparent plunge to the stratigraphic controls to the Peak Orebody. Subsequent exploration within and around the ægreaterÆ Perseverance area has been significantly aided through the use of downhole electro-magnetic surveys due to the close spatial association between gold and sulfide mineralisation.

Mt Muro was a gold and silver mine in Central Kalimantan on the Island of Borneo, Indonesia. Aurora Gold through its Indonesian subsidiary Indo Muro Kencana owned the project. Processing commenced in November 1994, and ceased in June 2002. Mining, including prestripping, commenced in March 1994, and ceased in May 2002. Nominal throughput was 1.5 Mtpa, at average grades of 3.80 g/t Au and 99 g/t Ag. From the start of prestripping until the end of 1996, Drill Blast sampling was the main grade control method. After several studies into the viability of Reverse Circulation, including an assessment of costs and benefits, the switch from Drill Blast to Reverse Circulation was made in late-1996. From 1997 until the end of the project Reverse Circulation was the main grade control method. The mine-to-mill call factors û the reconciliation between predicted and actual tonnes and grades delivered to the mill û for the period from commencement of processing to December 1996 were 1.069 for tonnes, 0.949 for gold, and 0.969 for silver. The mine-to-mill call factors between January 1997 and June 2002 (excluding a period of significant illegal mining) are 1.086 for tonnes, 0.977 for gold and 1.025 for silver. At face value this indicates a 2.8 per cent absolute improvement for gold, and 5.6 per cent for silver. Using average grades for the project, an additional 5112 oz of gold, and 267 173 oz of silver were delivered annually to the mill using Reverse Circulation sampling instead of Drill Blast sampling. The additional recovered metal value is estimated at $US 2.87 M annually, significantly exceeding the cost of Reverse Circulation drilling. This paper discusses a number of issues that may affect the estimated benefits.

The paper presents a sound critical estimate of mathematical models presently used for the process of compaction of fine-grained materials. It shows the mathematical model of compaction developed by the authors, which was used to formulate the program of computer simulation of the process. The examples of computer simulation experiments of compaction of selected fine-grained materials regard the results of the experiments made by the authors on variability of external friction occuring in this process. Simulation examination presented in the paper crucially contributed towards the original method of selection of rational compaction technologies of fine-grained materials developed by the authors.

A continuous casting machine, of the Concast curved mould design casting billets in four strands, was commissioned at the Newcastle Works of The Broken Hill Proprietary Co. Ltd., in November, 1967. Quality assessment of early casts from this plant indicated that steel cleanliness was sometimes inferior to that of equival- ent ingot cast steel. Extensive trials to develop a modified deoxidation technique were not successful in improving clean- liness to the desired level. A "contra-flow" gas shroud, to cover the steel stream between the tundish and the mould, was developed, and proved successful in achieving the required levels of product cleanliness. The inclusion content of six grades of steel ranging in carbon content from 0.10 to 0.70 per cent is examined, and an attempt is made to explain theoretically some of the results obtained.

The indiscriminate surface disposal of coal waste in the past has created a serious fire hazard in the bush of the northern New South Wales coalfields. Spontaneous or bushfire-induced combustion in large neglected dumps of this material has increased in recent years causing a rise in air pollution. Surface methods of coal waste disposal are still being practised, and in many cases new material is being added to old dumps, many of which are burning. CSI RO has conducted research on methods of preventing and controlling fires in coal waste and recommends practical methods of overcoming these problems. Some laboratory and on-site investigations are described and the hazards of improperly constructed dumps are considered. The available techniques of fire prevention and control are discussed in relation to Australian conditions. Proposals for the safe and economical disposal of coal waste are outlined.

Elastoplastic parameter is a parameter that describe how much materials behave elastically up to certain stress states and plastically thereafter (Hudson and Harrison, 1997). In the continuum analysis, two main parameters of the elastoplastic parameter are modulus elasticity and Poisson’s ratio. In the slope, elastoplastic parameter holds the main role for stability related to deformation in ductile type of rock. There’s a limitation to determine elastic or plastic deformation at the field for ductile rock type. Field manifestation commonly showed that there was no accumulation zone during and after the sliding failure mechanism, in other hand, at the research area, manifestation of deformation at the toe of slope only indicated by bulging shape. This paper will focus at the sliding failure occurred at Coal mining Pit Y owned by Arutmin Indonesia, which according to failure investigation report similar with the condition described above. This paper also will be based on two hypotheses, first hypothesis is claystone rock mass has not been reached plastic deformation yet and the second hypothesis is there is a chance that elastoplastic parameter of the rock mass has been changed during the deformation/sliding failure process. Research method of this paper are back analysis using probabilistic analysis in Finite Element Method (FEM), which conducted before and after failure. Then, the result of the displacement or deformation of the analysis will be checked with the actual deformation shape. Meanwhile, the change of the elastoplastic parameter will be analysed and interpreted. This paper hopefully able to be developed to study about elastoplastic behaviour of rock mass in actual condition and the influence of another uncertainty factor which determine the slope stability.

The mining. operations of Bougainville Copper Pty Limited are located at Panguna on the Island of Bougainville which is part of the Territory of Papua and New Guinea. Mineralisation in the Panguna area was first established by C.R.A. Exploration Pty Ltd in 1964. Exploration work since then has established ore reserves estimated to be 760,000,000 tons of.0.47% copper and 0.4 dwt./ton gold. An economic feasibility study completed in July of this year has enabled a decision to be made to proceed with a major mining operation. The ore will be mined by open cut methods and will be treated in a conventional concentrator with a nominal capacity of 90,000 short tons per day. The concentrate will be pumped as a slurry through a 15 mile long pipeline to a port established on the east coast where it will be filtered and dried ready for export. Other supporting facilities for the mine include two towns, a 135 megawatt steam power station, and access roads.

"Water is increasingly being recognised as a material business risk that many companies are still not well-equipped to deal with. Despite a raft of water-risk focused initiatives, methodologies and guidelines, the challenge of managing the strong link between the technical and operational water issues, along with the growing external challenges and interests in water, remain a significant risk to a companyÆs ability to deliver value.This paper provides an overview of the key lessons learnt from ERMÆs experience of working with companies across a range of water sensitive industry sectors, in particular, the mining and oil and gas sectors, to develop and implement practical approaches to manage business critical water risk. These examples highlight the importance of managing water risk by linking technical and operational aspects of water management - with the longer term strategic and social license aspects. Four key ingredients were identified that are central to providing companies with a leading edge in the successful mitigation of water risk: understanding and evaluating water risk including the technical and operational aspects of water management, plus the longer term strategic and social aspects articulating a strong business case that prioritises water risks and their financial exposure to the organisation constructing a clear roadmap that practically links the water strategy objectives with on-the-ground implementation and action building capacity in the organisation to manage, engage and coordinate on water to mitigate risk.CITATION:Ringwood, K and Tang, A, 2013. Spiral separators have been used to treat heavy mineralsands in Australia for some 35 years. During the last five years the logical extension of this technology has been torecover cassiterite from alluvial deposits. Plants incorporating spirals are already operating in Indonesian andAustralian tin mines. A more fundamental understanding of the design of spiral separators has recently led to their use in other mineral treatment plants.In particular, the treatment of alluvial gold and fine coal has been most successful. The new generation of spirals that has been developed to treat these minerals is more easily operated than other competing processes and is therefore ideal for new mine situations.

Differences in the assay results of replicate samples engender doubts on the reliability of ore sampling and of assaying procedures. An analysis of variance is a technique to estimate the variability at each level of the procedures. An empirical, kinematic model is developed which calculates the trajectory of individual blocks of rock in a blast, their point of impact in the muckpile and the final shape of the muckpile. The method is based on the determination of initial block velocity and requires input on stemming length, bench height, subdrill, burden, spacing, energy of explosive per unit length of blasthole, energy attenuation rate and resistance to movement. The model, which will form part of a comprehensive blast simulation package, has application in open cut mining in predicting muckpile geometry and the movement of grade blocks during blasting, which in turn impact on shovel productivity and grade control.

A full-scale statistically-based on/off plant trial of a new flotation conditioning technology designed to improve fine mineral recovery was undertaken to determine whether the recovery of selected fine sulfide minerals can be increased. The technology is selective for certain sulfide minerals only, including chalcopyrite and sphalerite. The technology has been shown to selectively aggregate the fine chalcopyrite and sphalerite minerals giving increased flotation recovery. An improved technique for the quick and accurate measurement of the weight and centre of mass in the horizontal plane of large machines has been developed. On-site weighing of large plant such as bucket wheel dredgers is an important part of the commissioning procedure. The results from the weighing assist in determining the stability of the machine and also enable confirmation of the structural weight distribution used for stress analysis at the design stage. In this paper the techniques previously used for weighing are reviewed and the sources of error using these methods examined. A full descrip- tion of the current technique and procedure is given explaining how the measurement system comprising strain gauge load cells, displacement transducers, wind speed and direction sensors, data logger, computer and software was developed to enable quick and accurate measurements to be made. Proposed modifications to software necessitated by the replace- ment of current measuring instrumentation and computer are discussed. A typical example of measurements from the weighing of a large dredger, illustrating the accuracy of the new technique is given and the calibration technique used to check the accuracy of the force and moment measurements is explained. An outline of how the results are used to certify the machine for operation is given.

An investigation was carried out at a US underground mine to characterise diesel aerosols and to asses the effects of various control technologies on the concentrations and properties of particulate matter and gases emitted by heavy-duty diesel-powered equipment. This study was dedicated to evaluating the impact on mine air quality of contemporary diesel particulate filter (DPF) systems installed on mining equipment. Additional efforts were made to assess the effect of blended biodiesel fuels, yellow grease and soy, ultra-low sulfur fuel, a fuel emulsion and of selected diesel oxidation catalysts on air quality and emissions. The carbon analysis performed on the collected samples showed that the tested DPF systems reduced the mass concentrations of elemental carbon in mine air by between 70 per cent and 92 per cent. In addition, TEOM measurements, collected during these tests, showed that the total diesel particulate matter concentration in the mine air was reduced by greater than 65 per cent when DPF systems were used. The tested biodiesel blends were found to reduce elemental carbon concentrations in the mine air by between 49 per cent and 33 per cent, for the B20 (20 per cent biodiesel/80 per cent #2 diesel) of soy and yellow grease respectively and between 66 per cent and 56 per cent for the B50 (50 per cent biodiesel/50 per cent #2 diesel) of soy and yellow grease, respectively. The water-in-diesel fuel emulsion was shown to reduce elemental carbon concentrations by as much as 85 per cent. NO2 measurements showed an increase in the maximum concentrations of NO2 when catalysed DPF systems were used instead of mufflers.
