The lignite mines in the Latrobe Valley of Victoria/Australia have been using continuously operating mining systems for more than 50 years. The relatively small bucket chain dredgers of the early years have been progressively displaced by bucket wheel dredgers with increasing size, increasing capacity and increasing service weight. The large machines for the new open pit Loy Yang have a bucket wheel outreach of 46m, an effective capacity of 3350 bm' coal/h respective 2500 bm' overburden/h and a serv- ice weight of approx. 4500 t. The time between signing of con- tract and starting of operation for these machines is at least four years. The high service weight, the resulting high capital invest- ment and the long period for design, design review, manufac- turing, erection and commissioning of these machines directed the SECV to investigate a possible application of compact dredgers for the Latrobe Valley.

The Precambrian iron ore of Singhbhum-North Orissa region of eastern India occurs as part of the horseshoe-shaped broad synclinorium known as the Iron Ore Group (IOG) of rocks, which hosts the most important iron ore deposits in India. The Jilling-Langalota iron ore deposits are part of the IOG. Detailed mineralogical characterisation of different ore types has been carried out using transmitted and reflected light microscopy. Scanning electron microscope-energy dispersive spectroscopy (SEM- EDS), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray fluorescence (XRF) have also been used with a view to test the amenability of these ore types for beneficiation requirements. It has been observed that haematite, martite and goethite are the main iron-bearing minerals. Kaolinite and quartz are the major gangue mineral phases. Considerable mineralogical, textural and compositional variations have been observed among the different ore types. Characterisation data reveals that the massive and hard-laminated ores are of higher grade with very few interlocking textures having haematite and martite as major mineral constitutents. The soft-laminated lateritic and friable ores are relatively low-grade varieties containing various proportions of impurities with complex interlocking textures. The soft-laminated and lateritic ores are porous in nature and contain friable oxide and hydroxides of iron along with kaolinite, gibbsite and quartz. The occurrence of kaolinite, gibbsite and hydrated oxides along the cavities and weaker mineral planes of haematite and martite has been observed. The friable nature and high alumina content of these ores are attributed to these secondary phases. The nature of these ores is responsible for producing large amounts of alumina-rich slime during mining and handling operations. Suitable beneficiation schemes have been recommended for each type based on detailed characterisation investigations on these ores.

THE Mount Morgan mine has, from the time of its historical discovery, been the subject of investigation and speculation by geologists and mining engineers. The first examination was made by Dr. R. L. Jack, in 1884. He came to the conclusion, from theevidence then available, that nothing but a thermal spring in the open air-otherwise a geyser-could account for the formation of the ore body. This report attracted world-wide attention at the time. Since then the mine has been examined by most of the leading geologists of Australia, and by many from elsewhere. In all cases the examination has only extended over a period' of a few days or weeks, and in the light of present knowledge of the deposit we know that sufficient data could not be obtained in such a short time to warrant the statement of definite conclusions. It is not to be wondered at, therefore, that a considerable difference of opinion exists as to the genesis of the deposit. That the company considered more detailed investigation necessary is shown by the fact that some thirteen years ago it employed Mr. Charles Walker as geological surveyor on the .mine. At that time also the data available was insufficient to give satisfactory results. It is, however, a matter for comment that none of the geological reports on the property took notice of the increase of copper values in the ore with depth, though the present workings and diamond-drilling...

The structure and hydrodynamics of the raceway zone of a blast furnace was studied on a cold model representing a sector containing two tuyeres. The model differed from the usual in that it was prov- ided with continuous flow of the coke layer at pre- determined rates, had provision for changing the tuyere parameters (diameter, protrusion, inclinat- ion) and irrigation of the layer with liquid. A combination probe was developed which per- mitted simultaneous measurement of the pressure field both across the area and through the height of the layer as well as determining the topography of the raceway. The velocity fields in the layer were measured with a specially made impulse thermo- anemometer. The determining criteria of the model were taken as the relationships between the energy of the blast and the particles, the dimensions of the raceway and the cross-section of the tuyere. The model established the effects of the tuy- ere structural parameters, blast parameters and amount of liquid products of smelting on the con- figuration of the raceway, the structure of the layer, pressure and velocity fields in the vicinity of the tuyeres and in the vertical direction through the layer. The properties of the raceway formation and the structure of the layer in motion have been clarified.

Geotechnical investigations have played a key role in influencing decisions for development of the Porgera Gold Project in the highlands of Papua New Guinea. Porgera is located 130 km west-northwest of Mt. Hagen in steep mountainous terrain with high rainfall. Much of the site is underlain by weak mudstone of the Chim Formation and creeping colluvial soils. Landsliding is common on the steeper slopes and in the valley floors. Structures have had to be sited to avoid areas susceptible to these movements. Early stage feasibility investigations included studies of tailings dam and waste rock dump sites, processing plant sites and hydroelectriic schemes. Further studies, leading into the design stage included the Enga Highway upgrading, water supply and power supply schemes. As construction for the project proceeds geotechnical input remains at a high level, with emphasis now on maintaining viable stable sites and refining data on which designs were based.

In a dynamic environment such as the Star Mountains of Papua New Guinea Geotechnical Engineering for the Ok Tedi Project must be described as both interesting and challenging. To be effective a reasonable sized team of dedicated people is required with occasional supplementation by specialist consultants and an annual review process. Ok Tedi Mining Limited's (OTML) Geotechnical Section has a vision to be recognised as the leading mine-based geotechnical engineering section in PNG and to be world class by any international standards. This paper deals with the organisational and operational duties of the Geotechnical Section at the Ok Tedi Mine. One of our major roles is in the area of safety, and in particular in the early warning of natural and mining induced geological hazards that may affect safety and/or productivity. The major activities in- clude geotechnical inspections (pit, waste dumps, tunnels, re- gional), data collection activities and database management, geotechnical design and control work.

There is considerable economic incentive to increase the angle of open pit walls so as to reduce the total volume of waste to be moved to gain access to an orebody. However, a number of slope failures has increased the awareness of mine operators to the potential and consequences of slope failure. Sophisticated methods for the analysis of slope stability have been developed but they rely on an understanding of the appropriate parameters to describe the structural properties of the slope materials. Unfortunately, these properties change with time.The excavation of an open pit mine removes the constraint and weight of the overlying material and allows the newly formed slope to release previously locked in stress. The release of this stress allows the opening of joints and leads to a significant reduction in bulk modulus. The rock mass is also further affected by damage from nearby blasts. Such damage is cumulative and further reduces the modulus of the near surface material and weakens the bonds between structural elements in the slope.

East Guangdong tin province overlaps the southmost part of the mesozoic magmatic arcof continental margin type in Southeast China and is dominated by mesozoic syntectic magmatism,which associated to tin mineralization. It is distinguished from Nanling tin province but quite close to NW Bolivian tin province in both tectonic and magmatic relations.Tin deposit's mostly of cassiterite-sulfide, cassiterite-silicate formations are localized along exsocontact zone of granitoid batholith or stock, boundary area of volcanic depression, or, within volcanic edifice. Petrochemistry studies show tin was concentrated as intermediate-acidic magma evolved by fractional crystallization. Xiling tin deposit of vein type related to extrusive... the lava dome was formed at T C 221-301 and at very shellow depth,seems to correspond to type A in classification for Bolivia tin deposits by J.N.Grant. Tashan tin deposit of dissemination type related to hypergene intrusive facies,with mineralization occured in endocontact zone of granite porphyry dykes is considered as porphyry type,which spported by H-0 isotope and gas-liquid inclusion evidences. It formed at T C 250-430, comparable to Bolivia porphyry tin deposits,but at a greater depth 1.3 3.0km.A model for known tin deposits in East Guangdong was worked out. A good prospecting perspective was revealed for the potential type of tin deposit in East Guangdong--subvolcanic porphyry tin deposit.

As South African gold mines go deeper, and improved and more uniform working condi- tions are required, ever larger amounts of refrigeration are needed. At the same time new and more suitable cooling equipment is becoming available for use with new mining layouts as well as on existing shaft systems. The advent of the large diameter rotor screw compressor has meant that there is now a machine available with great flexibility in performance and construction for efficient underground use. The first installation using this type of machine is described.

With blasting, all far-field phenomena including, but not limited to, stress wave propagation, fracture, vibration and muck pile formation are intrinsically and irrevocably dependent upon near-field phenomena or mechanisms that we describe using physics-based mathematics typically transcribed into computer codes. The energetics involved in such near- to far-field transitions are not fundamentally relevant as they are simply progenitors of these processes.The notion of explosive energy as a descriptor for explosive or blasting performance is a case in point. These energies, which are generally used in blasting tables, are almost exclusively based on ideal detonation theory alone and do not include the influence of the rock, charge diameter, blasthole length and the late-time dynamic expansion that can be predicted using codes based on non-ideal detonation theory.With decoupled charges in presplits for example, the pressure drop between the charge and the blasthole wall can be simply described to first order using the energy relationship associated with adiabatic expansion. Copper-gold deposits associated with iron oxide rich rocks (ironstones) form a distinctive and significant ore association which occurs widely, but not exclusively, in the Proterozoic. The ironstone association is geochemically distinct from the BIF-hosted gold association (Phillips and Groves, 1983). Not only is the former association higher in its copper and commonly uranium, FEE, ¦bismuth, molybdenum contents, but also the ironstones in many cases do not originate as chemical sediments. Although both associations form in metamorphic environs, they reflect differing tectonostratigraphic settings and with consequent differences in ore-forming fluids and ore-forming mechanisms. This paper discusses the nature and origin of the ironstone-related copper-gold association, with particular reference to the Tennant Creek district in northern Australia, and emphasises the two stage origin of mineralisation. The genetic model developed has significant implications for other ore-bearing environments.

When the writer first saw the square-set timbering, he was at once impressed with the fact that the frames made by the sets, along the lode amI across it, were composed of panels with rectangular openings, and it was puzzling to understand howsuch a collapsible construction could resist pressure that came unevenly on it. Later he learnt that the sets did not satisfactorily resist such pressure, but mullock filling had, to a great extent, to undertake this duty for them. So it appeared that the setswere practically an expensive scaffolding, enabling the miners to work in the face and carry the stope forward, till the filling was put in behind them to take the pressure of the roof and sides of the excavation. Of course some of the pressure is takenby the sets, but this is because the set timbers prevent the filling being done perfectly; if it were practicable to remove the sets before filling, the filling by itself would more effectively support the back and wall, than do the combined sets andmullock. On the whole, therefore, the sets can hardly be said to be of much benefit where pressure has to be resisted. The large, high grade 3000 and 3500 copper orebodies at Mount Isa lie greater than 1200 m below the surface, and partly beneath the silver-lead-zinc mining operations at the Isa Mine.Since discovery over 30 years ago, the primary data acquisition programs have been integrated with long-term copper production strategies. These potentially sizeable and distinctly separate accumulations of copper mineralisation are the only sources capable of supplementing a decline in output from the 1100 orebody in the 1990s. Within a decade these deeper copper orebodies will become the major source of copper ore.

Mineralogical study of the interactions between fluxes and iron-oxides helps to understand how magnetite oxidises to haematite during pellet firing. Samples of OneSteel magnetite pellets tested at COREM pilot plant were collected after three firing steps and were studied mineralogically. Preheated pellets revealed no particular microstructures related to the composition of fluxes but were more affected by their bed position. After kiln firing, the impacts of lime and magnesia became more apparent. Magnetite oxidation is complete in the cooling stage. The position and the microstructure of the residual magnetite can bring useful information that could æcompleteÆ the view of the firing cycle.

Mineralogical, chemical, and isotopic data have been obtained for samples from 11 volcanoes and 4 kortlandite intrusives on Kamchatka.Similarities and differences in ore-bearing and barren intrusives are discussed. Differences in sulphide mineralization and sulphur isotope compositions of intrusives are explained in terms of the "auto-sulphurization" hypothesis which involves the redox conditions of the host rocks. possible role for carbon in nickle sulphide ore formation is also considered.

The Newmont Boddington Gold (NBG) processing plant was designed for 35Mt/y with ball mills expected to deliver a combined new mill feed rate of 4837 tonnes/hr. Since beginning commercial production in late 2009, the plant has steadily increased throughput to meet design capacity in 2014 and reached 37 Mt/y in 2015. Through improved efficiencies, changes to the milling circuit have taken place since commissioning to take the plant beyond its design to an actual throughput of 39.0 Mt in 2017 and a budgeted throughput of 39.4 Mt/y this year.The NBG milling circuit has four parallel ball mills, each consisting of a 7.9 x 13.4 m ball mill with twin 7.5 MW fixed speed motors in closed circuit with twelve 650 mm cyclones. Each mill is fed by two wet screens with the undersize gravitating to a mill discharge hopper where it is combined with the ball mill discharge and pumped to hydrocyclones for classification. The cyclone underflow is re-ground to a target P80 of 150 µm.This paper will focus on process improvements made to the NBG milling circuit which include cyclone reconfiguration, fine screen panel redesign, implementation of an expert control system, mill power draw increase and grinding media changes to take NBG beyond its design throughput.CITATION:McCamley, C, Petrucci, P and Blay, K, 2018. I congratulate The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy on its decision to hold its Annual Conference here in Western Australia. Western Australia, with its abundant mineral and energy resources, plays a key role in the Australian mining industry... and Western Australia will continue to figure prominently in this vital industry for many years to come. The success of our gold, iron ore, bauxite, mineral sands and other primary industries has enabled Western Australia to contribute significantly to Australia's export revenue and, therefore, to the nation's economic strength. The State's mineral wealth has also provided the impetus for a recent surge in mining related activity, including a dramatic increase in downstream processing of our raw materials. Billions of dollars worth of new project investment is either committed or awaiting final approval - and most of this new investment is a direct result of a healthy and vibrant mining industry. The North West Shelf Project - which has been providing natural gas for homes and industry in Western Australia since 1984 - has also played a key role in stimulating industrial development. The availability of abundant, competitively-priced gas from the North West Shelf has - along with the availability of other raw materials - made Western Australia a more attractive proposition for industrial investment. The company I represent, Woodside Offshore Petroleum, is operator of the North West Shelf Project on behalf of the Project's six Joint Venture Participants - Woodside Petroleum Ltd, BHP Petroleum (North West Shelf) Pty Ltd, BP Developments Australia Ltd, Chevron Asiatic Limited, Japan Australia LNG (MIMI) Pty Ltd and Shell Development (Australia) Proprietary Limited. The theme for this Annual Conference: "Excellence - the key to the continued success of the Australasian mining industry" is appropriate to the North West Shelf Project. The pursuit of excellence has been a hallmark of the Project. The Joint Venture Participants have been conscious of the need for stringent quality control at all stages of development. Procurement and purchasing policies, for instance, have demanded strict adherence by contractors and suppliers to the highest standards and specifications.

Increasing demands on quality of metallurgical grade alumina and for lower production costs led to the development of a new fluid bed calcining process. The process, jointly developed in Germany by Vereinigte Aluminium Werke A.G. and Lurgi Gesellschaften m.b.H., takes advantage of modern chemical engineering methods such as counter-current flow of combustion air and solids, direct heat-exchange between combustion air and fine solids and near stoichiometric combustion of oil in a fluid bed. Using a two-stage Venturi-type suspension preheater for heat-recovery from combustion flue- gases, the circulating fluid bed technique with internal oil combustion at 2.2000 F for the calcining step and 'a five-stage fluidized bed cooler for heat recovery from calcines, the process gives an outstanding heat- efficiency. In a first industrial plant for 560 sh. t. alumina per day heat consumption figures of less than 1.400 BTU/lb A12O3 were achieved.

Through the application of the Rietveld method, X-ray diffraction analysis has developed into a fully quantitative method for phase analysis of metallurgical products. The Rietveld method itself has progressed from an unstable method that required constant operator intervention to a stable and robust method suited even for routine process control. Knowledge of the crystal structures of the major phases is essential for Rietveld analysis, and these are well known for most minerals and major phases in metallurgical products. It provides the basic structural information necessary for the determination of mineral stoichiometry and for elucidating solid solution behaviour. Modern methods, such as simulated annealing and charge flipping, permits the determination of crystal structures from powder data. Unit cell data can be used where conventional microchemical analysis is unable to provide an answer to the extent of solid solution in ilmenite roasting. Unit cell data (by XRD) is used to determine the amount of roasting necessary for the development of magnetisation to be able to separate chromite from an ilmenite concentrate. Phase quantification is probably the most widely used application of XRD analysis. It is used for materials balance in the minerals and cement industries, and it is finding novel applications in the iron and steel industry. Applications of XRD in high-temperature metallurgical processes are increasing. In this paper the phase chemistry of iron ore sinters, the evaluation of subsolidus reactions in titania slags and the identification of furnace accretions are discussed. Despite the success of the Rietveld method in phase quantification, the method still needs further development in the quantification of closely related or polytypic phases. The quantification of pyrrhotite phases using various Rietveld programs still gives ambiguous results. This is also true for the different SFCA phases in iron ore sinters. Clearly the analysis of similar phases, differing only in the presence of weak superlattice reflections is still problematic.
