The fragmentation of whole rock by blasting has an influence on the subsequent loading, hauling and crushing operations. However, no method of calculating the frag- mentation has yet been developed. This paper gives a method of calculating the fragmen- tation for the simplest form of blasting, i.e. cratering. Cratering consists of the detonation of a spherical charge of explosive in a blasthole breaking to one free surface. This paper gives a method of calculating the extent of the system of radial cracks generated by the explosive in the rock. This system of radial cracks is then used to calculate the fragment size distribution curve from blasting. The calculated curves are shown to be in good agreement with experiment.

Investigations were carried out to understand the effect of liquid viscosity (u = 1 x 10-3 - 5 x 10-' Ns/m2) on the size of primary bubbles formed at high gas injection rates (Q = 100 - 1000 cc/s, U = 0.04 - 0.42 mach) under room temperature conditions using flush tuyere (3 mm diameter) operating vertically upward. Tuyere pressure fluctuations were correlated to the mode of bubble formation by simultaneously filming the bubble and the corresponding tuyere pressure fluctuations displayed on an oscilloscope screen. A simple mathematical treatment is presented to estimate bubble size in viscous liquids. The theoretical results are compared with the experimental measurements.

Following the perception by the Groote Eylandt Mining Company of a need to further beneficiate a fines product, and preliminary metallurgical testing to demonstrate the feasibility of such beneficiation, a comparison was made of the various configurations of cyclonic heavy medium separators available. This comparison consisted of (i) a pilot plant test in which a dynawhirlpool (DWP) and a pump fed cyclone were compared, and (ii) a survey of operating plants using the systems under consideration. Little metallurgical difference was found-between the different systems. The gravity fed cyclone configuration was finally chosen based on a particular need to minimise degradation of ore and on a desire, in so isolated a location, to use established and locally supported technology.

The Mount Lyell Company treats some 2.3 million tonnes of ore annually, mined from a number of orebodies on the field. Blended ore is essentially a quartz-sericite schist containing about eight per cent of pyrite and three per cent of chalcopyrite. Four-stage crushing and two-stage ball milling are followe by selective flotation for copper. Pyrite is recovered from the coarse fraction of dopper circuit tailings. A detailed survey involving examination. of 82 samples provided information on the size- by-size behaviour of the principal ore constituents throughout the grinding, copper flotation and pyrite flotation sections of the circuit. Results for the copper and pyrite flotation sections are presented in the paper, and it is shown that over half the copper reporting to the final tailing (5% of copper in the feed) is plus 100 microns and that the major pyrite loss is in the desliming cyclone overflow. These data proVide a basis for assessing potential methods of circuit optimisation.

Porgera is located in the Central Highlands of Papua New Guinea. Porgera Joint Venture treats a high grade epithennal gold deposit. Most of the gold occurs as submicroscopic particles in a sulphide matrix although there is some quite coarse free gold. Anticipated gold production is 900 000 oz per year for the first six years of operation.Stage I of the treatment plant consisted of a concentrator and leach/CIP Circuit. It was commissioned in August 1990. Design throughput was 1500 tpd with an anticipated gold recovery of 60 per cent. Throughput achieved was actually 1850 tpd with an average gold recovery of 69 per cent. CIP tails were accumulated in a pond awaiting retreatment by pressure oxidation.

The Circum-Pacific area is one of the most important gigantic skarn-metallogenic belts in the world. In more than 20 coastwise countries of this region, there exist thousands skarn deposits of different types. According to the differences of major metallic elements, the skarn deposits may be classified into seven subtypes, i.e. Fe, Cu, Pb-Zn, W, Sn, Mo and Au skarn deposits. In this paper, the distribution. and geological characteristics of above-mentioned types of skarn deposits are described briefly. Skarn deposits may also be classified on the basis of the dominant calc(magnesian)-silicate mineral assemblages into four types: magnesian, calcic, manganoan, and alkaline skarn types. Magnesian skarns may be associated with Fe, Cu, Au,, Sn, B, Be mineralization, calcic skarns with Fe, Cu, W, Mo, An, Be, Pb, Zn, Sn minerailization, while the alkaline skarns occur in U(Th, Nb) deposits. The skarn deposits of both East and West Pacific rims have many general characters, but have some diferences in geotectonic settings, intensities of mineralization, distribution, and metallogenic epoches. In this paper, the minerogenetic series and the mineralizing specialities of related magmatic rocks of the skarn deposits are also discussed.

Mining, like most other businesses, is based upon capital assets; and the primary cap- ital of any mining company is its ore reserve. A company's survival and growth is, thus, dep- endent upon its ability to replace, increase, redistribute and to diversify its ore reserves. A Kennecott executive addressing a group of geologists in 1957 stated, "Management expects a geologist to find ore! That is the primary objective and the justification of the geologist in the minerals industry. There is no other function that we can rationalize." This is, however, a restricted point of view, and one which I an sure is not fully shared by mining executives or mine operators at the present time. Ore reserves are 'made' as well as 'found' and the geologist contributes to this process. A mining geologist engages in activity in- volving the study of geology in connection with the total mining operation. His major task is the adaption of geological knowledge of ore de- posits and rock behaviour to mining needs, and the application of principles of the science of geology to specific problems of finding, develop- ing and extracting of ore bodies.

Rock burst is common in deep underground excavations and is characterised by a violent ejection of block rocks from excavation walls. It is critical to understand the phenomenon of rock burst and particularly the failure mechanism. Laboratory experiments are one of the ways. For that purpose, a rock burst laboratory test system was developed at the State Key Laboratory for Geomechanics and Deep Underground Engineering at the China University of Mining and Technology, Beijing. A true triaxial test system, designated the Deep Underground Rock Burst Analogue Test Machine, was developed, which can transfer a stress state from three-direction-compression on six surfaces to the compression on five surfaces with one set free. The rock burst experimental system comprises an acquisition of acoustic emission signals, a high-speed recording in order to accurately record the kinetic characteristics of rock fragments ejected during a rock burst event and the possibility of infrared thermography showing the surface temperature of the samples. In this paper, analyses of typical results from rock burst tests are presented with a description of the obtained results. The mechanisms of rock burst are illustrated, and a rock burst classification is proposed based on these laboratory tests. For the control of rock burst, the constant resistance, large deformation (CRLD) bolt or anchor is presented for accommodating the large displacement of surrounding rock masses and absorbing the impact of the sudden release of rock burst while outputting a constant resistant force in response to the external load. The CRLD bolt or anchor has had practical applications in underground mines. Finally, in situ tests performed in a tunnel at Qingshui coalmine, China, are analysed in detail.CITATION:He, M and Sousa, L R, 2014. The Emperor gold deposit occurs on the western margin of a 5 Ma caldera in a large, mafic shoshonitic shield volcano on the island of Viti Levu, Fiji. Products from two major pulses of post-caldera intermediate volcanism filled the caldera. Caldera collapse-related steep and flat faults and zones of shattered rock provided per- meable conduits for vertical and lateral fluid migration and favourable sites for ore deposition. One large hydrothermal system, operating concurr- ently with extrusion of the second pulse of resurgent volcanism, may have produced porphyry- style alteration within the caldera, epithermal mineralization at Vatukoula, and weakly minera- lized, siliceous veins and breccias in an outflow zone northeast of Vatukoula.

Appin Colliery mines the Bulli Seam with a gas composition of 98.5% methane and 1.5% carbon dioxide. Relaxation of the strata generally occurs to below the base of the Wongawilli Seam, some 40 m below the Bulli Seam, and approxim- ately 125 m above the Bulli Seam, for longwall face widths of 135 m or more. Previous exper- ience showed that when longwall faces were mined for a distance approximately equal to the face width, the mine ventilation could not provide sufficient dilution due to methane emissions from the underlying measures. Postdraining downholes were drilled to intersect the Wongawilli Seam below the operat- ng longwall. These holes were connected to an underground to surface gas range and various suction levels were applied to improve gas drainage. The resulting gas flow rates and purity from all the downholes were regularly monitored and peak flows in some holes exceeded 160 1/sec. The surface plant drained almost 20 million m3 of gas for the period July 1981 to January 1982 at an average methane purity of approximately 70%. Distinct patterns emerged for different downholes from curves illustrat- ing their variations in flow rate with distance subsequent to passage of the longwall face. Its two years since we have presented at this conference and since that time we have made significant progress with our coal developments in New Zealand. In 2005 we held the Whareatea West exploration permit and had just completed the purchase of the Cascade mine. Today, in addition to Cascade and Whareatea we now have the Takitimu Mine, Eastern Coal Supplies, our coal blending and distribution facility in Timaru, prospecting permits at Ohai and Orepuki and an established customer base underpinned by the contract to supply FonterraÆs Clandeboye plant commencing in September 08. For this presentation I would like to take you through our purchase and development of the Takitimu mine.

Although the title of this paper permits a very broad scope for discussion, I propose to deal mainly with those aspects of design part- icularly related to rook filling, the'theme of this conference. The unique suitability of belt conveyors for the continuous economical delivery of materials into or out of underground workings, is well established and needs no elaboration. The facility with which conveyor units, comprised of modern modular components, can be adjusted to lengthen or shorten, their ability to be readily repositioned to suit the develop- ment of a work pattern and their virtues as low noise, reliable transport media, are already accepted by all who are involved with the mining industry.

Traditionally, surface coal mines in the Western United States have been limited by economics to depths between 150 to 200 feet. Utah International Inc., however, is now planning to strip coal its San Juan Mine in Northwestern New Mexico to depths ranging up to 400 feet while uncovering 20 feet of steam coal. This method is cost-competitive with nearby shallower coal deposits and underground mining of the same property. How trucks and shovels can pre-strip for a dragline, along with results of the planning process, comparison with alternate systems, capital requirements, operating costs and comparisons with other coal sources are all detailed. Also discussed are the major problems anticipated, how they might be corrected, and potential improvements to the concept. Introduction The San Juan Deep Stripping Project will be situated at Utah International's San Jean Mine. The mine is in the Four Corners region, so-called because four states enjoy a common border point about 30 miles to the northwest.(see Figure 1). The area is a semi-arid plateau region with an average elevation of 5,200 feet, receiving an average of 6 inches of precipitation annually

The design, construction and operation ofa laboratory scale rotary pot kiln are outlined. Charges ofup to 3 kg can be heated to temperatures up to 1200°C in a controlled atmosphere. Some examples of pyrometallurgical investigations carried out using the kiln are briefly described, including thermal reactivation ofcarbon using steam at 550-850°C, high temperature testing ofkiln liners for corrosion resistance to fluoride, and calcination oflimestone. Results obtained from these trials allow either direct scale-up to the Engineering Chemistry Laboratory's pilot-scale (50-100 kg/hr) rotary kiln or modifications to be made to commercial scale processes and/or equipment.

"Booster fans are relatively rare in Australian coal mines. However, as mines become progressivelydeeper it is likely that such fans will be increasingly adopted as a method to sustain or improve the ventilation of underground workings. The reasons why booster fans may be an att ractive alternative include: increased cost of sinking additional ventilation shafts with greater seam depths; environmental objections to shaft sinking projects; and increasing urbanisation and surface constraints limiting availability of potential ventilation shaft sites. As Tahmoor Colliery movedinto its northern lease the ventilation constraints became the limiting factor on production. Thelimitations of the old workings meant that the existing ventilation system would be inadequateto sustain the required production. Extensive ventilation modelling was carried out to evaluatevarious potential solutions and the recommended option was the installation of a booster fanor fans, to gain underground access to an already approved shaft site in the northern lease.Proposals were sought from recognised fan manufacturers and various alternative arrangements were tendered. Ultimately the choice was between one large centrifugal fan and a set (three or four) of smaller æauxiliary-likeÆ fans in parallel. The successful tender was for a single centrifugal, an arrangement very similar to the booster fans that have been operating eff ectively at Westcliff Colliery for a number of years. This paper describes the current ventilation network, evaluation of the ventilation options, the fan selection process, and the project status to date."

The algorithms employed by the commercial tools are either heuristic algorithm or iterative optimisation of a subsystem. This often results in a suboptimal schedule. In this paper, the author presents a new scheduling algorithm that incorporates with a novel stockpile configuration system, an improved algorithm on multiple processes and a mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) global optimisation model. It can simultaneously optimise stockpiles, blending, multiple processes as well as multiple mines. A nuclear technique for the analysis of copper in bulk materials has been developed and successfully field tested at Mount Isa Mines Limited. The technique utilises the gamma-ray resonance scattering process. A bulk analyser based on this technique gives a rapid and accurate measurement of the percentage by weight of copper or nickel aver- aged over a large mass of sample, typically 20 kg. The only sample preparation required for accurate analysis is crushing to -2.5 cm. At Mount Isa over 100 mineral samples covering a wide range of rock types and copper contents were analysed. Bulk analyser assays and chemical laboratory assays agreed closely for underground pillar-extraction and geolog- ical chip samples, conveyor belt samples, and finely ground samples from the ore concentrator. For the concentrator samples, the root mean square deviation between bulk analyser and chem- ical laboratory assays was 0.06 wt.% copper. The chemical assay errors for these samples were about 0.06 wt.%

Open stope mining is the most common mining method employed in underground, hard rock mines in Canada. It is characterised by relatively small, single lift stopes (20 000 to 100 000 tonnes), and fast stope turnaround times. Host wall rock mass conditions, which are typically poor to fair, are the controlling parameter in stope dimensioning. Rock mass stability is maintained by designing all stope surfaces at a stable dimension, and through extensive use of cablebolting for stope backs and frequently stope hanging walls. Dilution control is a high priority. The typically small, high-grade, deep and irregularly shaped orebodies are incrementally developed, usually in a bottom to top direction. In many cases, high stress is encountered due to the depth of the orebodies. Overstressing of pillars and hanging pillars are avoided through the use of pillarless or early pillar recovery mine sequencing strategies. Stopes are invariably filled, and in higher grade and wider orebodies, cemented fill is commonly used. This paper generalises many of the similarities found in Canadian open stope mines.

The Northside Storage Tunnel is a TBM driven rock tunnel system designed to collect and store sewage from four major storm overflow points along the existing Northern Suburbs Ocean Outfall Sewer. At present, sewage overflows during wet weather are the main source of pollution for Sydney Harbour. The tunnel system comprises a 16 km long by 3.8 m to 6.5 m diameter tunnel from Lane Cove to the North Head Sewage Treatment Plant and a 4 km long by 6.3 m diameter branch tunnel from West Chatswood. The tunnel will have a typical rock cover of about 50 m to 150 m. Most of the tunnel alignment is contained within the Hawkesbury Sandstone Formation which is generally an excellent tunnelling stratum, and offers few geotechnical constraints. However, the tunnel is required to pass beneath incised palaeochannels at Middle Harbour and Manly with each palaeochannel containing about 70 m of sediment.Innovative geotechnical and geophysical investigations were undertaken to examine the tunnel route and characterise the rock beneath the palaeochannels. These investigations have located zones of poor quality rock beneath one palaeochannel in particular, suggesting significant stress relief had taken place in the rock at times of lower sealevel producing structural features indicative of valley bulging. This paper presents the geotechnical model developed for the tunnel, and the models and constraints for tunnelling beneath the palaeochannels.
