This paper reviews the instrumentation and monitoring of blasthole drills and electric mining shovels at a surface coal mine in western Canada. The drill monitoring component involved the development and implementation of microprocessor-based hardware on Bucyrus-Erie 45R and 60R drills. Over a two year period 3800 metres of blasthole drilling were monitored The drill data was subsequently correlated with core and geophysical logs towards identifying unique and reproducible ranges of performance parameter data for the different rock types penetrated. Using this technique, the geology of the study area benches was characterized in detail. Once these same benches had been blasted, the performance of a P&H 2800XP shovel was monitored as it worked through the blasted ground. In this regard, the influence of different digging conditions on shovel performance were identified in a range of blast and geological environments within the study area. The precise nature of these environments was confirmed by a correlation with the interpreted drill monitored data and muckpile size distributions obtained from a digital photo-analysis study. The excavation of 500 000 bcm of waste was thus monitored and a digging index derived which reflected variations in muckpile diggability. The paper concludes by proposing an integrated monitoring approach which, as a first step, uses interpreted drill data for explosive loading. This capability would permit greater accuracy in explosives loading ie. charge placement within higher strength lithologies, while avoiding weaker units. The performance of an instrumented shovel would then be monitored as it works through the resulting muckpile. Interpretation of the shovel performance data would determine the overall quality of the blast in terms of a digging index (DI), providing an indication of the relative digging effort and the effectiveness of the blast design.

Polish coal mines are well equipped with methane monitoring systems,nevertheless the worsening conditions force a continuous impro- vement in the field of environmental monitoring. Application of modern electronic components make it possible to design the new modular telemonitoring system incorporating the best features of the older systems,widely employed in Polish collieries, eliminating their weak points. Several new sensors and portable instru- ments for methane monitoring and early fire detection have been developed and tested in mining conditions.

Resource estimation and selective mining of structurally complex, high nugget orebodies presents a major challenge to the Mine Geologist. At the Golden Pig BIF-hosted gold deposit in Western Australia, an estimation method has been developed that replaces an assay-based resource estimate with one based on mineralisation intensity. Subjective coding of the mineralisation intensity has a more robust connection to local grade than drillhole assays. Indicator variograms of the five mineralisation codes are well structured with anisotropy directions similar to observed structural controls. The proportion of each mineralisation code is estimated and a weighted average of the average grade of each code calculated for a block. Initial validation has shown that the model is a good predictor of the mineralisation intensity, and the application of appropriate local average grade for each mineralisation code gives a reliable block grade estimate.

Henry Walker Eltin (HWE) are the mining contractors for Gloucester Coal at Stratford mine, which is in an environmentally sensitive area in the Avon Valley, NSW, Australia. Normal blasting at Stratford is done in a æstand upÆ or æbox cutÆ mode to suit the truck and shovel operations. Recently an opportunity of doing a throw blast became available when part of a ramp had to be blasted to accommodate changes to the pit design while not damaging the remainder of the ramp. The objective was to maximise throw into the void in order to minimise excavation costs by reducing the amount of overburden to be moved by the excavation fleet. It was necessary that the best result be achieved while staying within the vibration and airblast limits at a neighbouring property and nearby township. Both objectives were achieved through the application of OricaÆs knowledge of blast design, modelling and i-konTM electronic detonators. The i-kon system was used because of its known benefits in cast blasting and environmental control. The i-kon system provides the blaster with much greater accuracy, control and the flexibility to tailor blast designs. It has been found previously to enhance blast throw and provide cleaner high walls (Brent, 2002). The blast was a success, producing a muckpile with a high degree of looseness and consistent fragmentation, with an average throw to final spoil position of 37.5 per cent. This was achieved without any environmental exceedance. In addition, high speed filming showed that the coal edge had remained largely in place, indicating minimal coal loss. The results exceeded the expectations of HWE Stratford and the overall cost savings to HWE Stratford from this blast were recognised to be substantial. Further throw blasting opportunities at Stratford have been followed using the i-kon system to maximise benefits.

In seeking to improve the economic performance of mines, the management or human aspects are usually seen to be quite seperate from, and more significant than, the technical aspects. There are obvious aspects of industrial relations, man-management, skills training and supervision that are currently the focus of efforts to improve the productivity and quality of the mining process. However technology also has a lot to offer. Analysis of the costs involved suggests that innovations leading to improvement in the productivity of the excavation and transport of overburden and the recovery of coal (both in the mine and preperation plant) can lead to improvements in the economic performance of a mine that may outstrip the obvious non-technical or management opportunities for improvement. While there are some innovations currently being investigated within the industry that relate to the design of mining equipment, the type of machinery being used in open cut mines has not changed dramatically over the last twenty five years. It is also likely that mining equipment will remain essentially of the same form in the forseeable future. If significant improvements to mining performance are to be achieved other than by futher increases in the scale of machinery, then we need to seek ways to operate these same types of machines in a more productive and controlled manner. This paper discusses the identification of mining processes the improvement of which is likely to have a significant effect on mining costs and performance. Some areas of current research are discussed and potentially fruitful areas for future development are identified.

In the future to excavate sufficient coal for power generation, two dredgers would be required to dig overburden or interseam 70010 of the time and three dredgers 40010 of the time. One overburden system was not adequate for this requirement, making coal production reliability vulnerable. TS5 spreader is the new machine element of this system. The selection of the best type of machine configuration to suit the application was then subject to an internal SECV VE Study, a registration of interest and a tender for two machine alternatives. This paper outlines the reasons why SECV planned the Secondary Overburden System and how the Krupp machine met these requirements. It also identifies the main design features of the machine and its constructability which will allow the machine to be operational by the end of May, 1990.

Around 35 Mt of industrial clays were produced in 1994 under the broad classifications kaolin (25 Mt), bentonite (8 Mt) and attapulgite/sepiolite (2 Mt). A brief review of world sources and markets is given as background to Australia's small production (0.5 Mt) but developing interest in industrial clays. Clay markets have changed significantly over the past 30 years resulting initially in consolidation and expanded production from traditional high-grade clay sources but also creating opportunities for development of new discoveries. Decline in the use of clay-based refractories has come at a time of strong growth in demand for refined kaolin for the paper industry. Traditional markets for bentonite as oil drilling muds, iron ore pelletising and foundry bond sands are mature and in overall decline. Today, bentonite has a significant share of the growth market in pet litter which a few years ago was dominated by attapulgite/sepiolite clays. Both bentonite and attapulgite/sepiolite have good prospects for increased demand in environmental markets both in containment of hazardous wastes and sorption of toxic substances. In common with all industrial minerals, markets for clay minerals will demand continuous improvement in product quality and consistency. Development of new and improved products will be increasingly the responsibility of the raw material supplier. In order to remain competitive, this will require a substantial commitment to quality assurance and research and development. Increase in market share will come for those producers able to translate developments in their products to cost savings or increased competitiveness for the industries that they Supply.

"The mining industry is the source for the vast majority of the metal, mineral and energy resources we use on a daily basis. New deposits are discovered over time and are developed into mines before being rehabilitated – a sequence that when repeated can help contribute to the noble notion of ‘sustainable development’, despite the generic concept of mining being the unsustainable consumption of non-renewable resources. The scale of the modern mining industry is immense – from iron ore and coal to base and precious metals, modern mines are sometimes hundreds or thousands of times bigger than their long lost historic ancestors. We also live in a world with emerging and increasing demands for so-called technology metals (aka ‘critical’, ‘e-tech’ or ‘specialty’ metals) that are needed to feed the rapid growth in renewable energy (especially solar photovoltaic panels and wind turbines), consumer electronics, sophisticated military technologies and super alloys, amongst other uses. These elements include the rare earth elements, indium, germanium, tellurium, rhenium, selenium, gallium and many others, most of which had few or no known uses in the recent past. Although the mining industry has been successful in developing ever larger mines and increasing the scale of production, the key issues underlying the future of the industry are declining ore grades, increased tailings and waste rock generation, the presence of toxic or other impurities, balancing the economics of primary and secondary products, stricter environmental conditions, more difficult exploration, increasing community expectations, as well as the processing of more complex or refractory ores, let alone the recent volatility in world commodity markets. Here, we synthesise our recent research on many of these various issues, focusing on the need to link all areas within the mining chain from mineral resources through mining to environmental performance in order to ensure we obtain the most out of our modern mining effort. The paper presents a unique and detailed assessment of the sustainability challenges and opportunities facing modern mining – and geometallurgical thinking is at the heart of this conundrum.CITATION:Mudd, G M, Jowitt, S M, 2016. In 1975 the Commonwealth Government established import parity pricing for all liquid hydrocarbons discovered after the 16th September, 1975. These discoveries were termed "new oil" to differentiate them from existing discoveries and production. Overnight the price of the product being sought trebled, resulting in greatly enhanced economics by increasing the potential returns on existing prospects and by making smaller plays economically viable. After 18 years of drilling, the offshore Gippsland Basin has attained a moderate level of exploration for a basin of its size. Fifty seven prospects have been drilled within the basin but only a few of these were drilled along the southern and northern margins, while the deep water areas along the eastern margin have remained virtually undrilled following the Hapuku-1 oil discovery. The major hydrocarbon accumulations within the basin are trapped beneath the Latrobe Unconformity surface and exploration has largely concentrated on this single play in areas immediately adjacent to the major producing fields.

The removal of bismuth from liquid copper in a vacuum furnace was studied over a range of pressures. The rate determining step changes from diffusion in the gas at pressures above 0.2 Torr to approach the Langmuir evaporation rate at pressures of 10-2 Torr. Oxygen and sulphur were found to have a negligible effect on the rate. Bismuth removal from copper sulphide was found to be considerably slower than from copper. This is consistent with the known thermodynamic properties of ternary sulphide melts.

Variety among deserts is nearly as great as among other climatic environments. Common to most deserts, and to areas downwind from them, is the dominance of aeolian transport of surface material, at least during some seasons of the year. The result is dilution of local surface materials with varying proportions of chemically uniform fine sand and silt, often imported by the wind from remote areas. Fortunately, desert pavement,.even though separated from bedrock by a meter or more of nearly pure loess, is simply a diluted reflection of nearby bedrock. Infiltration of loess through the surface debris and the rudimentary soil-forming processes in the desert usually preserve the integrity of the pavement. This pavement, or its "downstream" derivatives, provides a suitable sample for exploration geochemistry if proper care is taken to circumvent the aeolian dilution. The simplest and most commonly used method of circumventing the dilution is to use a coarse fraction of soils or stream sediments, discarding or retaining the finer fraction depending upon the magnitude of the dilution. Where the coarse surface debris is composed of rock chips representative of the bedrock sources, the method is successful. Under most circumstances the coarse fraction of the surface material will give a fair representation of gross lithology and will occasionally give an indication of mineral- ization. The major drawback to this approach is that selective weathering and erosion in the vicinity of mineral deposits often lead to the loss of ore minerals into the finer fraction, leaving a coarse residue enriched in feldspar and particularly in quartz; thus, the geochemical signature from a mineral deposit is effectively reduced or completely masked. The second most commonly used method to overcome aeolian dilution, and probably the most effective at present, is to use a heavy- mineral concentrate. This approach presupposes that the chemical signature sought resides in a heavy mineral. Fortunately, the arid weathering cycle is conducive to the formation of a wide variety of secondary ore

This paper introduces a classification of gold orebodies, and comments on the importance of cutting high grade values, the choice of an appropriate ore reserve method and the necessity for producing recoverable ore reserves by considering the mining policy. The author stresses the importance of obtaining the appropriate information from the data relevant to a particular deposit as opposed to transfering parameters from one deposit to another.

The Loy Yang Optr, Cut is a brown coal mine bring developed in the Latrobe Valley region located some 160 kin south-east of Melbourne, Victoria. The mine has been designed to supply a mine mouth power station at a rate that will rise to 32 million tonnes per year by the mid 1990's. Continuous mining metnuds are employed using bucket Whtel excav- ators and conveyors. The Portia Au and North Portia Cu-Au-Mo prospects are located on a magnetic structure called the Benagerie Ridge Magnetic Complex, comprising varying pyrite-bearing Proterozoic albitite, phyllite and carbonaceous phyllite. The prospects are covered by up to 75 m of Cainozoic sediments, which comprise from top down, surface soils, Quaternary sediments, the Miocene Namba Formation and the (Late-Oligocene?) Portia Unit.The Portia Unit is dominantly clay-rich with local sand-rich base and it fills palaeo-topographic lows and a palaeo-valley that incised into the weathered basement rock (saprolite). This sedimentary unit hosts the majority of the Au grains found at Portia, with additional Au grains also present in the underlying saprolite. The North Portia prospect comprises saprolite hosted Cu-Au-Mo, with elevated concentrations of As-Pb-V present in the northern part of the prospect. These two groups of elements are delineated using factor analysis, and are regarded as the pathfinder elements for the North Portia mineralisation.Secondary Cu minerals including covellite and native Cu are present in the lower saprolite, and are stable under reducing conditions in the saturated zone.In the upper saprolite (unsaturated), Cu, Au, As, Mo and Pb are associated with Fe-oxides, mainly goethite and hematite. Saprolite leached of Fe generally contains low pathfinder elements concentrations.

Reserves of high-grade quartz gravel, lignite and timber suitable for the production of silicon metal and ferrosilicon on large scale occur within 40 miles of Bluff Harbour. Undeveloped hydroelectric power resources on the Clutha River are located within 50 miles of the most promising quartz gravel deposits while opencastable lignite, potentially suitable for electric power production, occurs in the same locality as the quartz gravels. A preliminary study of production economics indicates that the commercial feasibility of silicon/ferro-silicon production would depend mainly on the cost of electric power, total capital cost of plant, and the market value of the products. The proximity of Bluff Harbour is advantageous for the export of products.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has developed a prototype cross well acoustic logging system and complementary tomogr`aphic image reconstruction software for the detection and delineation of abandoned underground mines and associated subsidence failure in relatively shallow environments. The logging system uses a piezoelectric, cylindrical bender as an acoustic source. A triaxial accelerometer assembly, designed to be rigidly locked in the borehole, is the receiver portion of the logging system. Both the source and receiver probes operate at high frequencies, thus providing short wavelengths capable of resolving small features in most rock types. A modified van with a dual-drum wireline winch, 4-channel data acquisition system, power amplifiers, and waveform generator supports field operation of the logging system. A field study was conducted at a test site in San Antonio, Texas, to demonstrate the cross well acoustic logging system. The underlying rock at the test site is similar to stratified sediments in coal measures. First- arrival travel times were interpreted by tomographic reconstruction of the velocity field in the two-dimensional cross section between the source and receiver boreholes. The resulting image correlates well with geological borehole logging data for the test site.

Flash X-radiographs were obtained of commercial electric No 6 and No 8* strength aluminium tube detonators in small-diameter cartridges of emulsion explosive at various times after fusehead operation. The trigger system for the radiography was based on the detection of light following fusehead firing via optical fibres inserted into the fusehead cavity during detonator assembly. These experiments were simulated using a finite element hydrocode with realistic treatment of the non-ideal reaction kinetics. Excellent agreement was demonstrated for the shape and position of the shock waves. In both cases, initiation of the emulsion was predominantly forward from the detonator. For the No 8* strength detonator, this initiation resulted from the shockwave delivered through the sides of the detonator, while for the No 6 strength detonator, initiation was the result of a complex interaction between shockwaves originating both from the sides and from the endcap. In the reverse direction (towards the crimped end of the detonators), initiation was only weakly dependent on detonator strength, being controlled mainly by the competing processes of rarefaction from the cartridge boundaries and comer turning of the detonation wave from the forward initiation. The consequences for field performance of small-diameter emulsions will be discussed.

Every text book for blasting in Japan says that Hauser's law can be applied for practice. But recently it came true that there was no historical record about him and no actual datum of his own or other's to testify. According to his theory, the funnel ratio N = r/W in crater test is inversely proportional to the rock strength and proportional to the explosive amount: where r is the radius of crater and W is the burden. But experiment showed the opposite result, and revealed new information. Two kinds of experiment, crater test and boulder blasting of mortar, were carried out to investigate the effects of rock properties on blasting. The material used for test 1 and test 2 was a mortar block (60cm)3 cube, 4 vertical faces of which were used for crater test. The results from Test 1 and test 2 were summarized as follows. The funnel ratio ranges between 2.5 to 4.5 in proportion to rock strength and burden. The standard ratio of 1, reported by Hauser, was not observed in any instances. It was also noted that the funnel ratio is independent of the explosive amount. The material used for boulder blasting, test 3, was a mortar block (40cm)3 cube, in the middle of which was located a vertical borehole for the explosive charge. The results of test 3 were as follows. The necessary explosive amount for boulder blasting is in inverse proportion to the mortar strength. Fragmentation and throw are proportional to the mortar strength.

A major initial and ongoing cost component in many mining operations is that of transporting mined materials and processed ore from the point of extraction or processing to the next operation. For various reasons the transport distance can be significant or in some cases the route may be particularly challenging. The trend to higher production rates to gain economy of scale benefits and capitalise on sales opportunities means that optimisation of transport can play a significant part in profitability. Apart from the cost criteria, increasingly there are other criteria such as environmental restraints, land ownership and security of supply that can have a significant impact on determination of the optimum route and transport vehicle. The paper aims to briefly highlight the important selection criteria and the benefits and disadvantages of the most commonly utilised transport vehicles. It then moves on to looking in more depth at belt conveying, highlighting the unique capabilities of the Metso MRC Cable Belt Conveyor system.
