The centrifugal elevator invented and patented by the writer is designed for the purpose of conveying the tailings of a gold dredge to such a distance that it shall not impede the dredging opperations. Formerly this was usually accomplished by means of a belt of buckets travelling round a ladder set at an angle of about 30 degrees to the horizontal, but this meant heavy wear and tear on the travelling buckets and the tumblers actuating them. The centrifugal elevator throws the tailings through the air to the required height and distance and it is manifest that during their flight from the elevator to the heap there is absolutely no wear and tear, only the attraction of gravity and the resistance of the air has to be overcome. All then there is left to he considered is how to throw the stuff with the minimun of prower and wear on the elevator.The elevator consists of a cam-shaped steel casting with a disc of mild steel plate on either side: These side plates project a few inches beyond the tips of the beaters, in order to prevent odd stones from straying in an undesired direction; they serve also to prevent extra large stones from reaching the beaters, for they slide off the rims into the water.

The Australian metallurgical processing industry has shown great innovation and progressiveness over the past ten years. During the same period, exploration activity, particularly by Australian companies, has increased substantially in Indonesia. Following feasibility studies, the decision was made to establish a metallurgical laboratory and design facility in Indonesia. An Indonesian partner was selected, and legal and corporate matters were determined. The laboratory was established but proved far more difficult than a similar undertaking in Australia. Australian and Indonesian staff were recruited and training programs, including training of Indonesian staff in Australia, were implemented. Difficulties of operating in Indonesia included: ò language difficulties ò _ local pace of life ò culture ò communications. Rewards of the decision to establish the means to present the technology to Indonesia have included: ò a contribution to Australia's export of technology. ò an opportunity to expand Normet's client base. ò the opportunity to learn aspects of a foreign culture. ò the means to establish a sound long term investment. This export of technology from the Australian mining industry to Indonesia is an example of the initiatives and capabilities shown by the Australian mining service industry.

EARLY in 1911 the Public Service Board of New South Wales suggested the advisability of inaugurating a School of Mines at Broken Hill, arid made inquiries to determine how such an institution should be conducted. He, the author, believed the Board, as a result of the inquiries, was in favour of the project being worked in conjunction with the Technical College, and hoped to be ready to receive students at the commencement of 1912. That the inauguration has not yet taken place is probably due to the vast amount of consideration and preparation that a new departure of the sort would require. At the present time New South Wales or, to speak more broadly under the same denunciation, Australia is not at all suitably catering for the technical training of young men to provide the increasing demand for officers to work the valuable mines within its territory...

The amount of liquid retained in a porous bed is determined by weighing a column containing the bed.The column is attached to the free end of a cantilevered beam, and changes in weight are determined by calibrated strain gauges (which form a resistance bridge) attached near the fixed cnd of the beam. By coupling the output from the strain gauges to an amplifier and a recorder, a continuous record of changes in the drainage characteristics of the bed may be obtained.

The application of microwave energy as a substitute for conventional heating has drawn interest from many researchers in extractive metallurgy. Microwaves have a heating effect just as many other forms of radiant energy. Microwaves are able to penetrate the substance at which they are directed and in being absorbed heat the material from the inside. As a result of heat generated in the interior of a particle, microwaves can affect the rupture of a particle (in this case a host ore) and break down the matrix of the particle (host ore) and expose the recoverable mineral to the leaching reagent. Two series of leaching experiments were carried out at temperatures above 90????C using a conventional heater (hot plate) and a modified 850 W, 2.45 Ghz microwave oven. One series of tests was carried out at ambient temperature. A pyritic/arsenopyritic gold concentrate was leached with 3.3 kg/t to 6.8 kg/t NaCN for two hours. The extraction of gold at 6.8 kg/t NaCN was higher in microwave assisted leaching (59 per cent) than the extraction obtained in leaching at conventional heating (39 per cent) and ambient temperature (28 per cent). Extraction of gold was dependent on the size fraction used and was 48 per cent for û75 ¦m, 43 per cent for û90+75 ¦m and 37 per cent for û150 + 90 ¦m size ranges.

It is a great honour to address our Institute as President, but the choice of a suitable subject was not an easy one. In the past when the presidential address was given at an annual conference the subject usually related to the conference or industry concerned; more recently the subjects have been more philosophical and this is a distinct advantage to me.I appreciate that I am addressing an informed audience and I am sure' that you are well advised in many of the points that I hope to leave with you. Unlike the specialist who gets to know more and more about less and less and eventually knows everything about nothing, I am one of the group who gets to know less and less about more and more and eventually knows nothing about everything.I hope you will appreciate this point whilst you are listening to me.In recent years I have been closely associated with the problem that troubles most governments of our time: the competition of many groups of differing backgrounds for the land that is available to the nation.This is of particular interest to the industry with which we are concerned as it is of critical importance to the discovery and development of future reserves of minerals and metals. Part of my daily task is involved with the administration of legislation for mining operations and the conditions under which such operations may be undertaken, in implementing government policies relating to mining, and in designing and administering legislationdirected to safety and health in mines.Most of our members are involved in exploration or in day-to-day problems associated with the production of minerals or the management of companies in these pursuits and would be aware of many of the conflicting viewpoints on priorities.F. F. Espie in his presidential address of 1975 'On being a minority', made the point that our Institute found that the mining industry had a great communication 'Problem with the Australian people.I believe that this is one of our major problems.

Soon after the Rosebery concentrator commenced operations in 1936, an investigation was begun in an attempt to discover a substitute for cyanide in lead flotation. Cyanide is an excellent depressant for zinc and iron, but it also powerfully depresses the copper, silver and gold bearing minerals present in Rosebery ore, thus allowing them to pass through to the zinc concentrate or final residue where they are of little or no value.The investigation was not entirely successful, but it did indicate that sodium bisulphite or sodium sulphite could be used as a depressant for zinc without depressing the copper, silver and gold bearing minerals. The sulphites were, however, much inferior to cyanide as apyrite depressant.At about this time, I. W. Wark, using the captive bubble technique, had shown that, at the concentrations normally used, sodium aerofloat is not a promoter for pyrite or galena in alkaline solutions (see his book "Principles of Flotation", p. 188). Some preliminary tests on the production of a copper concentrate from Rosebery ore were therefore carried out using sodium sulphite as depressant and sodium aerofloat as promoter.The results of this work were promising but, since Rosebery ore usually carries only about 0·5% copper, there did not seem to be much incentive to carry the work further. The design of primary sample cutters for high-capacity conveyors is critical to achieving a correct sample, both in collecting the sample and ensuring smooth sample discharge flow. Modelling usually occurs at the design stage and requires extensive experience to achieve the correct result. However, it is difficult to confirm the effectiveness of the cutter design until after installation. Even with high-speed video, confirmation of complete sample capture is difficult, especially if the material characteristics change over time. Recent investigation using discrete element method (DEM) simulation to model the flow of the ore into the cutter and observe how it interacts with the cutter has revealed some interesting design requirements not observed in the past. By including DEM modelling, the correct design and optimisation of the cutter can be more accurately determined prior to commissioning.CITATION:Hidding, M and Shaw, R, 2017. THOUGH the literature on the chamber process is considerable, it mostly refers to European conditions. Owing to the demand for acid for flotation and leaching at the mine, it may be necessary to work the process under other conditions. Consequently, some results obtained during the chlorination days at Mount Morgan, within the Tropic of Capricorn, may be useful for reference when working in a similar climate. Though the chambers must be protected against tropical storms, thorough ventilation should be provided, with plenty of space between the chambers, which are almost invariably crowded together. Not only does the space assist in the cooling of the chambers, but it is very desirable during repairs, when lead andtimber have to be hoisted up. The connecting flues between the chambers, which are fairly efficient mixers and condensers, should be round, supported from above, and with the least possible timber about them. Their position and arrangement deserve careful attention. Lattice work will be sufficient protection for the sides of the chambers, and the roof should be high and well ventilated. The Mount Morgan plant, crowded and not well situated, consisted of seven chambers (four over 50 ft. in length), one Glover tower 7 ft. 2 in sq. x 20 ft. high, one Gay Lussac 9 ft. sq. x 30 ft. higb, also one 5 ft. diam. x 25 ft. high. There was one pipe column 4: ft. sq. x 14 ft. 6 in. high. The chambers were run as one unit, and were much lower than those usually constructed in Europe-less than 15 ft. high. Provided that suitable timber can be obtained, 20 ft. is quite low enough. It should be quite satisfactory to use round poles for the studs, and so admit more air space between studs andlead.

In the Bendigo district, with its large number of comparitively small leases worked by separate companies, we might naturally expect to find many different arrangements of winding machinery and, as a matter of fact, there are steam winches, old portable engines, single and duplex geared engines, twin engines on the first motion, and in one instance a single engine on the first motion, all employed for hauling purposes from depths of 1000 feet and over.It would be impossible in the compass of this paper to discuss at all fully the various arrangements of winding gear employed on the field the writer can simply refer to some of the more prominent features, in the hope that the information may prove of interest and benefit to the mining community. In criticising our machinery it must be remembered that when many of the plants in use at the present time were erected, they were not intended to wind from more than one third of the depths now common on the field; but so long as the machine could be made to haul a tank of water from the bottom of the shaft it has remained, the greater power required being obtained by increasing the piston speed and altering the gear wheels to suit. The consequence is, of course, that in some of our mines the speed of winding is painfully slow this feature, however, though certainly not consistent with modern ideas of economical mining, does not so seriously affect Bendigo as it would other fields, for the comparatively small quantity of stone to be raised from a given reef by some...

Following the experimental work of Denny, Robson, and Irwin, and the clinical investigation by Crombie and Blaisdell, an investigation of aluminium therapy was begun at Washington, Pa., which is situated In a very large industrial section of the State. Some of the men to be studied were from plants manufacturing silica brick, refractories used in steel and glass manufacturing, and semi-porcelain table-ware; others were workers in foundries, sand blasters, and men engaged in the quarrying of ganister rock.This group of workmen gave an opportunity to study the effects of aluminium on various types of silicosis which differed somewhat from that found in hard-rock miners.EXPOSUREIn their occupations, the men studied were exposed to silica dust concentrations ranging from 17 to 97 per cent free silica. In the silica brick industries, the unfired product averages 96 per cent silica in the form of quartz, whereas the fired brick contains 50 to 62 per cent. cristobalite plus 11 to 80 per cent. tridymite, forms of silica that, on account of their higher solubility, are more toxic than quartz. The operational dust counts in the plants varied from 15 to 9,500 particles per c.c., and the median particle size from the aerial samples was 1.0 micron for the green product and 2.0 microns for the fired product. The length of exposure varied with the occupation as well as with the individual plant, but disabling silicosis could be produced in less than four years in certain exposures. The average time needed to produce radiological silicosis in those susceptible to this disease was eight years. Some of the men in our series of cases have been treated as long as fifteen years after exposure had ceased, and have improved under treatment.The dust counts mentioned above had been reduced prior to the aluminium therapy studies and the presen.t exposures do not exceed '900 particles per c.c., the average being 370 particles. per c.c. This improvement in dust conditions was due to improved dust control apparatus, which was installed before aluminium therapy was instituted. In different parts of the world the term epithermal is commonly used for a variety of deposit styles. Using the redox state of the ore-forming fluid (inferred from mineralogy and alteration), the metal assemblage of deposits, and other characteristics, at least five different styles of epithermal deposit can be distinguished. Most of these different deposit styles appear to be related to magmatic fluids, with differences resulting from different compositions of source magmas. The most common style of epithermal deposit (low-sulfidation gold-silver deposits associated with calc-alkaline volcanic rocks) remains the most difficult to explain; the metals in these deposits may be derived by basement leaching without magmatic input, or they may come from magmatic volatiles, with contaminated I-type or S-type magmas as the most likely source.

The Mount Angelo prospect outcrops as two copper rich gossans, the larger of which is 250 ft long and 70 ftwide. The mineralization is epigenetic and replaces part of a brecciated and disturbed lime tone and calcareou sediment sequence.Magnetic and self potential survey indicated a substantial body of sulphide mineralization, the top of which was approximately 100 ft below the surface.Diamond drilling confirmed this and established the presence of a mineral body of at least 500,000 tons, extending to a depth of 300 ft. Of the 500,000 tons, 200,000 ton are primary copper ore which a ays 2 per cent copper.This mineral body is not economic at present, but could become economic if copper mining is established elsewhere in the district...

Development of New Comminution Testing Methodologies for Geometallurgical Mapping of Ore Hardness and Throughput The emerging discipline of 'geometallurgy' is becoming increasingly recognised as a discrete and high-value activity that reflects an ongoing trend towards more effective mine site integration and optimisation. Constrained sampling that reflects and defines inherent ore body variability is a key geometallurgical requirement. This requires use of larger numbers of low-cost physical testing which can be applied to small sample volumes suitable for defining natural variability. The AMIRA P843 'GeMIII' project (Geometallurgical Mapping and Mine Modelling) is a major industry-supported research initiative designed to develop new tools, methods and protocols to support geometallurgical integration. As part of this integrated research a new more rapid low-cost comminution test (GeM Comminution index) has been developed which can be employed as a front line tool for geometallurgical mapping purposes and predictive throughput modelling. The test has been designed to be inserted into routine assay sample preparation and is based on constrained jaw crushing protocols linked to analysis of resultant size distributions. Extensive validation and modelling has shown the GeM Comminution Index (Ci) is correlated with the Drop Weight index A*b and Bond Mill Work Index (BMWi). Large scale trials have been conducted within a commercial assay laboratory to demonstrate and optimise incorporation of the Ci test into routine sample preparation protocols. While Ci based estimates of A*b and BMWi are not as precise compared to larger volume more expensive test-work, the ability to undertake large numbers of tests typically in a systematic down-hole manner, provides a high level of data support through adjacency. A Ci based approach is highly suitable for variability mapping, domaining and selecting large composite samples for more precise testing. Within the context of the AMIRA P843 project this forms part of an integrated work flow designed to support geometallurgical integration. The development of a comminution test linked to routine assay sample preparation represents significant value adding to a process that in most cases is already going to be carried out. Three well-known copper and gold deposits in northern Luzon, Philippines are located in the Mankayan Mineral District. These are the Lepanto Copper-Gold Deposit, the Far Southeast Porphyry Copper Deposit and the newly discovered Victoria Gold Deposit. The latter discovery led LCMC to shift from a predominantly copper mine to a gold mine. The pre-Eocene Lepanto basement andesite and the middle Miocene Balili volcaniclastic sequence underlie the Mankayan Mineral District. They are intruded by tonalitic to gabbroic Bagon Intrusive followed by diorite-quartz diorite intrusions. Diatreme emplacement of late Miocene-early Pliocene Imbanguila dacite pyroclastics and porphyries took place much later. Faults in the district mostly form a conjugate fracture pattern dominated by north and northwest trending shears, east-west trending extensional fractures and few north-south trending fissures. Victoria is an epithermal gold-base metal rich quartz vein deposit. The veins occur along tensional structures and it is common to observe crustiform and banded features among the sulphides and gangue minerals. It is an open space infilling type of mineralisation. The Victoria vein systems are divided into zones based on continuity. In each zone are major veins and associated spits. Dacite pyroclastics and porphyries predominantly host the major veins with a few narrow veins hosted by the Balili volcaniclastics and the Lepanto metavolcanics. The veins generally trend east-northeast with 75 - 80 dips towards the south. The longest vein can be traced fairly continuously for a horizontal distance of about 600 metres. The vertical persistence of major veins exposed on three level drives has a range of 150 metres and can reach as much as 400 metres based on drill hole intercepts. The vein widths vary from two to eight metres. Right lateral movements of either the NW or NE shear faults could have produced the east trending tensional fractures. The development of ore shoot patterns was recognised and has been helpful to the mining operations. Cymoid loops with defined pinch and swell features are noted both laterally and vertically. Complementing the structural pattern is the distribution of gold values along veins where lateral and vertical continuity is also observed. Gold is associated with quartz, sphalerite, galena and chalcopyrite. In relatively high gold zones, the abundant sulphides are sphalerite and galena. In relatively high copper zones, there is an abundance of chalcopyrite and tetrahedrite. Galena is always associated with sphalerite but less in abundance. Chalcopyrite occurs either as separate bands from or associated with sphalerite-galena. Chalcopyrite and tetrahedrite appears contemporaneous with sphalerite and galena but in some portions the former cuts the latter sulphides. The predominant gangue minerals are quartz, carbonates and gypsum. Rhodochrosite is the predominant carbonate gangue. Few sulphides are found in the carbonates. Gypsum (anhydrite) is found cross-cutting early mineralisation. It carries very few sulphides. The alteration halos around veins are relatively narrow. In an outward sequence, the silicic alteration occurs very near the veins, followed by sericitic-argillic alteration then to propylitic zones. It is also common to observe veins bounded by propylitic alteration. Preliminary paragenetic studies show apparent three stages of mineralisation, the early-quartz (-gold) stage followed by a carbonate stage and a late-gypsum stage. The abundance of base metals relatively decreases towards the gypsum stage. The Victoria gold deposit could have some genetic associations with the Lepanto Cu-Au deposit and probably indirectly with the FSE porphyry system. It is relatively apparent that the Victoria quartz-gold-base metal veins could have occurred similarly as the quartz-gold roots overprinting the Lepanto enargite mineralisation. This overprinting signifies the waning stages of the entire hydrothermal system.

Maintaining high carbon activity is vital to the efficiency of any Carbon-In-Leach or Carbon-In-Pulp process. Reduced activity can lead to longer residence times or gold losses in the tails. Regenerated carbon from the CIL circuit at Macraes Gold Mine was analysed for kinetic activity and composition over a 15 month period. An increase in kinetic activity during the time period was recorded, which was linked to reduced Na and Ca loadings. A laboratory simulation of the loading, stripping and regeneration of gold was developed and tested. Kinetic activities were obtained for synthetically fouled carbons following three circuits of the laboratory simulation. It was shown the competitive gold adsorption ability of xanthate fouled carbon (previously reported as a serious deactivator) could be significantly recovered following effective thermal regeneration. This ability was maintained in a subsequent circuit loading.

A fundamental component of grade control at Tarmoola Mine has been the monitoring of assaying through quality assurance programs. The programs have concentrated on issues related to accuracy and precision of leachwell and fire assay techniques, sample preparation and grade variability within a sample. An outcome of monitoring has been identification of shortcomings in the application of assaying techniques to Tarmoola ore types that contain coarse particulate gold. Leachwell has shown satisfactory precision since introduction as the primary assay technique in October 1998 but leachwell accuracy and recovery through comparison with fire assay techniques has identified bias. A bias toward higher fire assays in grades above 2 g/t invoked an investigation into the cause of the discrepancy between leachwell and fire assay. Testwork evaluated Leachwell assay recovery by varying leach time duration, which showed that by increasing the leach time improved recovery significantly. Monitoring of leachwell against fire assay had shown that a leachwell (200 g) with a one hour leach has under-called grade when compared with fire assay by up to 18 per cent, on average, for Tarmoola ore types. Alternatively, optimisation of the leachwell assaying technique using a 200 g pulp and a two hour leach has returned, on average, higher assays than fire assay by up to eight per cent. Testwork on screen fire assays, duplicate assays and fire assay to extinction has demonstrated assay variability associated with coarse, particulate gold. The variability and distribution of gold in Tarmoola ore types has emphasised the importance of high quality sample preparation for leachwell assaying to ensure liberation of gold to leaching solutions. Assay quality assurance protocols are vital to assay data integrity and enable confidence in delineation of ore-waste boundaries and provide early recognition of problematic assaying periods and isolation of grade control practices, which depart from performance standards critical to the operation.

Grey River Gold Mining Ltd commenced dredging alluvial flats in the Grey River Valley in 1989. Previous drilling indicated over 100 million cubic metres of gravels with some 90 per cent of the gold in the bottom seven metres. The dredge built by Rahco, Spokane, was innovative in a number of aspects but particularly in the fact that a separate ladder with a cutter and pump was used to strip the overburden and a bucketline to mine the gold bearing wash below. Metallurgical studies and exploration were initiated when the project commenced. Leasing and environmental considerations were investigated and action taken. While progress is being made, the operation at this stage is not meeting required production and performance. Main problems have been with the stripping system and wear.

The Johnny Mercer lyrics 'You've got to accentuate the positive, Eliminate the negative, Latch on to the affirmative à' would best sum up the traditional approach to community relations in the mining industry. This '90s 'Public Relations spin' approach, usually backed up by scientific data, technical reports and graphs outlining risk probability and the impact potential on people and communities, is being challenged. Challenged by communities who have greater access to information, demand greater levels of transparency and corporate responsibility of large corporate operations and possess greater awareness of the communities they live in.   The growth of the environmental movement, of anti-globalisation, anti corporatism, apprehension of a large corporate's ability to deal with community issues, and a lack of faith in the abilities of regulators to regulate corporate activities, means our industry faces challenges on multiple fronts. It must now be able to address these from a personal/community perspective if it is to remain relevant within communities.   One of the keys to this is linking the internal activities and responsibilities to the externals concerns and demands for higher levels of operation and care.   This presentation draws on Corporate Public Affairs trends, functions and approaches and the application to External Affairs activities within Newmont Waihi Gold's operations in Waihi and regional exploration activities throughout the Hauraki Goldfields.   The approach presented works on the philosophy that communities don't necessarily have to like what we do, but should be able to identify and recognise the way in which we involve them in decision making, communicate our intentions and respond to issues.
