IN the past 75 years industrial engineering has been highly developed in many fields, but the coal mining industry has just begun to realize its potential for cutting costs. To receive the maximum benefit, a company should apply industrial engineering from the time a new installation is contemplated, but the principles can also be used to reduce and control the costs of an established operation. One company that had been mechanized for seven years reduced its total labor cost 57 pct by industrial engineering. Of this reduction, 20 pct was brought about by a preventive maintenance, rebuilding, and scheduled lubrication program that eliminated 80 pct of the delay caused by mechanical and electrical failures. Thirty percent of the cost reduction was attributed to rearranging the work force into crews of the most effective size, changing working methods, and training all mine supervision in the principles of the cost reduction program. The remaining 7 pct reduction was brought about by a wage incentive program for all the men in the mine. The productivity of this coal mining operation was increased from less than 8 tons per payroll man to 20 tons. This increased productivity was brought about while using the same equipment, men, and supervision.

COAL blending, in the preparation of coal before coke making, is so commonly practiced as to be almost universal. But the reasons underlying this practice, the benefits resulting from it, and the materials used in blending vary widely. This paper will outline the various phases of the subject and present information which may be correlated with work that has been done elsewhere. It will deal entirely with work done on the high-volatile coking coals of the western part of the United States, special emphasis being given to the coals of Colorado and Utah. A surveyL of the 86 coke plants in active operation in the United States during 1949 indicates that only 9 plants, or 10.5 pct of the total, charged one single rank of coal into their ovens, while the remaining 89.5 pcl made use of blending in some form. This report indicated that of these total plants 5 used straight high-volatile coal, 4 used straight medium-volatile coal, 47 used blends of high and low-vola-tile coals, 25 used blends of high, medium, and low-volatile coals, 2 used blends of high and medium-volatile coals, 3 used blends of medium and low-volatile coals. The fact that certain plants operated on a single kind of coal should not be interpreted to mean that no blending was practiced there, for invariably such plants secure their coal from more than one source and in the interest of uniformity do blend the coals as received. The general term coal blending covers two fields, the first of which is the mechanical mixing of a number of coals to secure uniformity. Often it is found necessary to secure coal for coke production from a number of different mines; these coals, though of the same general type or rank, may differ in their chemical composition or in the physical qualities they impart to coke made from them. Again, it is not unusual to find that coal from different sections of the same mine may show variations in quality. Under such conditions it may be necessary, in the interest of a uniform final product, to introduce a system of blending bins, a bedding yard, or other mechanical methods of securing a uniform mixture. Unfortunately this form of blending has received very little attention up to the present time; it has not received the consideration its value merits. The second type of blending, while also for the purpose of coke improvement, deals more particularly with the use of a blending agent differing in character from the base coal: it is this form of blending that will be discussed here. To consider only the western coals, for blending may be found necessary for other reasons with other coals, blending has been practiced experimentally or commercially under the following conditions: 1—When a single coal or mixture of coals of the same rank does not produce a satisfactory coke. For example, a high-volatile coal when used alone is likely to contract when coked so that a comparatively weak coke is formed. Or, if of very low rank, the coal may be deficient in the necessary bitumens required for good coke production. 2—When a product of some special quality is required, for example, when a plant ordinarily producing blast furnace coke must operate at slow coking rate to produce a high-grade foundry coke. Under this condition the reduced daily production of all products which accompanies slow coking time may be undesirable, and the use of some blending agent to increase the size of coke made at faster coking rates may be necessary. 3—When greater yield of coke or its coproducts is needed. Depending upon economic values of the products it may be found desirable to increase the yield of one or the other. 4—When supply of a particular coal must be used, either to protect reserves of high quality coking coal or to utilize a surplus or inferior product not otherwise usable. Many materials have been used for blending purposes, the exact agent to be used depending both upon the condition to be corrected and the nature of the base coal. Based on pole figure data and microstructural observations, the re-crystallization orientation found in a copper strip previously cold-rolled 99.5 pct from a single crystal with an initial (110) [112] orientation may be described as: a 30° rotation, clockwise and counterclockwise, about octahedral poles of the cold-rolled texture such that all four poles function at a low annealing temperature (400°C) and only three of them function at high temperatures (500' to 1050°C). The relative intensity of deformation stresses on various slip planes can be correlated with the choice of poles affecting the rotations found in the recrystallized orientations. ROTATIONAL reorientation about the poles of densely packed crystallographic planes is an important characteristic of secondary recrystallization" in face-centered cubic metals. Some evidence has also been interpreted to show that such a rotational relationship also exists in the primary recrys-tallization process." In an investigation of the crystallographic relationships in the recrystallization process, several aspects of the experimental procedure should be considered. With cold-rolled poly-crystalline metal as the initial material, pole figure analysis leaves many ambiguities as to whether or not simple indices can be assigned to adequately represent its orientation. The rolling texture does not consist of a single texture. Minor deformation textures are usually present. In all cases, twin textures are present. The presence of both minor and twin deformation textures influences the recrystallization texture. In order to study the recrystallization mechanism, a more precise knowledge of the history of the material before recrystallization is necessary. Tensile deformation of a single crystal usually produces residual stresses which are concentrated at slip bands. Since the exact nature and orientation of these potential nuclei sites cannot be experimentally evaluated, the tensile deformation of a single crystal was not considered adequate. From the work done by Barrett and Steadman6 n copper, it appeared that cold rolling of a single-crystal specimen with an initial (110) [112] orientation would yield a specimen which fulfills the conditions required for the present investigation, namely a highly preferred single rolling texture with relatively homogeneous stress distribution. By investigating the recrystallization texture of this material, additional details of reorientation during recrystallization might be obtained. The purpose of this paper is to describe such an investigation. Experimental Procedure Copper used in the present investigation was cathode sheet with a purity of 99.94 to 99.97 pct. A copper single-crystal specimen, 1.15x0.8720x0.5322 in. (thickness) was cut from a cylindrical crystal which was grown in a Bridgman furnace.' The cutting was accomplished on a horizontal milling machine operated at a very slow speed to obtain a (110) plane in the rolling plane and a [112] direction in the rolling direction. The disturbed surface was removed by electrolytic polishing in dilute orthophos-phoric acid (H3PO4) with a specific gravity of 1.14, and a current density of about 1 to 2 amp per sq cm. A 3-min polishing was needed to eliminate the disturbed surface causing Debye-Scherrer rings and a 45-min polish produced a surface which yielded sharp rounded Laue spots. It was estimated that about 1/16 in. of metal was removed from the original cut surface. The final orientation of this specimen before rolling was about 2" from the (110) plane in the rolling plane with a [112] direction aligned in the rolling direction. It is possible that a small amount of strain was still present in the cube despite the fact that the Laue spots seemed very sharp. It is doubtful, however, that this would be an important factor after a subsequent rolling reduction of 99.5 pct. This copper specimen was rolled on a laboratory rolling mill with two highly polished rolls 37/8 in. in diam in the following manner: 0.010 in. per pass to 50 pct reduction, 0.005 in. to 70 pct, 0.002 in. to 85 pct and, finally, 0.001 in. per pass to a 99.5 pct reduction. Procedures for computing turbulent flow of gas in steady state near the well bore and a graphical method for predicting unsteady state laminar flow at distances from the well have been combined to compute pressure gradients in gas reservoirs. Methods are discussed for predicting single and multiple transients at constant flow rate in an infinite reservoir, predicting constant How rate. in a finite reservoir, reproducing and interpreting back pressure test data, and prediction of the behavior of a closed-in gas well. An example of the graphical method is given for a single transient and the results are compared to a published analytical solution. A typical calculation of the pressure gradient in a reservoir and the production of gas is made .starting with data from a hack pressure test. INTRODUCTION The calculation of pressure gradients throughouse a ga-reservoir at any point in its production history is a complex problem involving turbulent flow near the well bore and unsteady state flow of the gas from the reservoir. The problem is complicated further by the variety of boundary conditions that may be imposed upon the flow. Such boundary conditions include finite or infinite reservoirs. constant or variable rates of production, constant or varying bottom hole pressures, complex initial pressure distributions throughout the reservoir, and pressure maintenance through cycling. In addition to these problems there are the practical difficulties associated with natural gas reservoir analysis These might include: (1) variation. in the permeability and porosity throughout the formation. (2) variations in the thickness of the formation, (3) communication of the producing formation with other producing zones. (4) radial variations in permeability due to influx of drilling fluid. acidizing. or the buildup of liquid in the formation around the well, (5) partial penetration of the producing zone. (6) water flood, and many others. These problems will be considered eventually. In the mean- time, it is necessary to present methods of handling the case of radial flow through a homogeneous, regular, producing stratum to a single well uncomplicated by other factors. The idealized case of steady state, radial flow from a natural gas reservoir was studied by Elenbaas and Katz5 and by Mac-Koberts.' An analysis of the unsteady flow of gases through porous media has been made by Aronofsky and Jenkins' for the one dimensional laminar case with the boundary conditions of constant downstream pressure and uniform initial pressure. Solutions for the partial differential equation for unsteady state radial flow of liquids through porous media have been given by Van Everdingen and Hurst" for the constant bottom hole pressure and constant production rate cases for laminar flow in a reservoir initially at a constant pressure. The analogous heat transfer equation has been treated by Perry and Berggren9 for the case of quenching a cylindrical hole in an infinite medium to a constant temperature. The back pressure curve, which involves the variation of the bottom hole pressure as it is determined by the behavior of the reservoir as a whole. has been studied by Rawlins and Schellhardt,10 Binck-lev,' Baumel and Breitung,' and others. No complete. adequate treatment has been given for the unsteady state, radial flow of gases into a cylindrical hole from a porous medium with or without the presence of turbulent flow and for any set of boundary conditions. If one relies only on analytical solutions of the basic equations, a new solution must be obtained for each new boundary condition. Furthermore, the complexity of the mathematical expressions for boundary conditions other than the very simple cases limits the use of analytical solutions. Graphical methods exist, however. that are general in nature, accurate, and readily employed. The analysis of steady and unsteady, laminar and turbulent, radial flow for various boundary conditions with application to specific natural gas well problems by means of graphical procedures forms the content of this paper. STEADY STATE RADIAL FLOW EQUATION FOR LAMINAR AND TURBULENT FLOW A steady state radial flow equation for laminar and turbulent flow through unconsolidated sands has been given by Muskat as discussion of the work by Elenbaas and Katz.5 This equation is based on the properties of unconsolidated

INTRODUCTION Situated 23 miles east of Pretoria the Premier Mine started diamond production in 1903. Two years later it produced the largest diamond yet discovered, the 3 106 carat Cullinan stone. For the period to 1932 when the mine was closed down due to economic circumstances, open cast mining was practised using inclined rope haulage traction and by this time had produced 48.5 million carats of predominantly industrial quality diamonds from 148 million tons of ore. In 1945 it was decided to re-open the mine using underground mining methods. A system using long hole benching was devised (Hodgson and Sewel 1960). This system was later modified but still forms the basis for approximately fifty percent of production. Following the successful introduction of block caving on associated diamond mines in the Kimberley area (Gallagher and Loftus 1960) this mining method was introduced to the Premier Mine in the late 60's and now accounts for nearly 50% of production. This paper will discuss block caving at Premier Mine in the light of our experience and discussion will be directed to the main geological and structural features of the orebody and host rocks and the related constraints imposed on the mining methods. Reference is made to the long hole benching mining method for comparative purposes. GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF OPERATIONS The ore from the block caving and bench mining areas gravitates via ore passes to a twin haulage, 500m below surface. Electric 13 tonne locomotives, each hauling a train of 10 Granby type cars, deliver the ore to two 42" x 48" (1.06m x 1.22m) jaw crushers. The ore is reduced in size to minus 0.15m before being hoisted to the treatment plant on surface. Hoisting is done with 12.5 tonne bottom discharge skips in a five compartment rectangular shaft using two 3 240 H.P. semi automatic Ward Leonard winders. A small single drum service winder operates in the other compartment. Men and materials travel in a separate shaft in a 5,4m x 2,8m cage operated by a Koepi winder. These two shafts are also the main intake airways to the mine. The two main extraction fans capable of 250 m3/s at 3,2 kPa are situated on surface and are connected to the underground workings by an incline and a network of air passes and return airways. GEOLOGY Although there are numerous occurrences of kimberlite bodies in the district, the Premier Mine kimberlite pipe is the only economic orebody. It is roughly oval in shape with surface dimensions of 900m on the long axis and 450monthe short axis. The surface area is 320 000 m2. The kimberlite has intruded a massive body of felsite and norite which is intersected by a number of faults. The contact between the kimberlite and host rock is clear cut and dips inward at an average angle of 80°. Cutting across the pipe and the country rock is a 75 metre thick gabbro sill, the top of which intersects the pipe below the 347m level and dips at 15' to the north west. The kimberlite has been metamorphosed a distance of some 20m both above and below the sill contacts. Age measurements on biotite from the gabbro date the sill as 1 115 million years, thereby providing a minimum age of the pipe. (Pre Cambrian). All other pipes in South Africa are of Cretaceous age (60 million years). A simplified geological plan and section of the Premier Mine orebody is shown in Figure 1. It is thought that the kimberlite intruded in at least three distinct phases. The kimberlites of these different phases can be distinguished most easily by their characteristic colour. BROWN KIMBERLITE. This is the oldest kimberlite and forms a crescent shape in plan on the south eastern side of the pipe. In depth it increases in relative area. Although the brown kimberlite carries the highest diamond grade in terms of carats per ton all the various kimberlites in the Premier pipe are economic to mine.

INTRODUCTION The Harrison Western Corporation, a leading Denver based mine contracting and engineering concern, is presently engaged in sinking two 1,006 m (3,300 ft) shafts for the Phillips Uranium Corporation at their Nose Rock Project, approximately 13 miles northeast of the small community of Crownpoint in McKinley County, New Mexico. The Nose Rock Project is the first attempt by the Phillips Uranium Corporation to tap the deep uranium reserves in what has become known as the Grants Mineral Belt. (See Figure 1) Project Description Phillips Uranium Corporation's plan for the large 2700 metric ton per day (2950 tons/day) mining facility calls for a series of deep access and ventilation shafts ranging from 4.27 m (14 ft) to 5.49 m (18 ft) in diameter to approximate depths of 1,006 m (3,300 ft). The initial pair of shafts consists of one production shaft and one ventilation shaft separated by a distance of 91 m (300 ft). The interbedded layers of sedimentary sandstones and shales to be penetrated by the shafts contain several major water producing aquifers, the deepest being the mineralized zone called the Westwater Canyon Member of the Morrison Formation. A series of temporary and permanent water pumping stations is planned. Generally, the temporary stations are located above major aquifers to facilitate water removal while sinking through the aquifer and the permanent stations constitute what, in the final mode, will be the mine dewatering system. In addition, Phillips Uranium Corporation has In- stalled and is maintaining a system of depressurization wells that temporarily pump the major aquifers and considerably reduce the water inflows during shaft construction. The major aquifers are also chemically grouted prior to sinking. Site work for the project was initiated in the fall of 1976. Full scale shaft sinking commenced in November of 1977 on the 4.88 m (16 ft) diameter ventilation shaft and on the 5.49 m (18 ft) production shaft by another contractor. Harrison Western Corporation began work on the project on November 4, 1979 wlth the production shaft at a depth of 633 m (2,076 ft) and the ventilation shaft at a depth of 474 m (1,554 ft). This paper will address only the portion of shaft sinking completed by Harrison Western. Geology and Hydrology The Nose Rock Project is located on the Chaco Slope in the southern extreme of the San Juan Basin in northwest New Mexico. The southern San Juan Basin is generally bound by the Defiance Uplift to the west, the Zuni Uplift to the south and the Nacimiento Uplift to the east. The Grants Mineral Belt occupies most of the southern portion of the San Juan Basin and this project is located on the northern extreme of the Grants Mineral Belt. The San Juan Basin is comprised of sedimentary rock of continental, marginal-marine and marine origin, that dip northward from the Zuni Uplift and Chaco Slope into the interior of the San Juan Basin. (See Figure 2) Major Formations The major geologic formations to be penetrated range from mudstone and shales to siltstones and sandstones. The sandstones are highly productive aquifers which, under static conditions, would flow artesian. Water temperatures in the aquifers are high and therefore are a force to be dealt with. Temperatures range from 18ºC (65OF) in the upper aquifers to 48ºC (118º'F) in the lower. The mudstones are generally bentonitlc. (See Figure 2) GALLUP SANDSTONE: The Gallup Sandstone is the first major regressive wedge in the San Juan Basin of the Cretaceous era and at this project is about 35 m (115 ft) thick. It is medium grained and prior to depressurization carried a hydrostatic water pressure of over 72.5 kg per cm2 (1,031 psi) which 1s artesian. Compressive strength ranges from 334.7 kg per cm2 (4,760 psi) to 421.8 kg per cm2 (6,000 psi). Water temperature is approximately 30°C (86°F).

The fatigue strength, fatigue hardening, and effect of fatigue deformation on subsequent age hardening of supersaturated Al(Cu) solid solutions have been determined as functions of alloy composition and temperature. The fatigue strength/tensile strength ratios, determined at 150°, 25°, and -195°C, decreased with increase in alloy content for all temperatures, but the F.S./U.T.S. ratios at -195°C decreased much more rapidly than did the ratios for 150" and 25°C. This suggested that strain aging and/or age hardening occurred during tests at higher temperatures. Additionally, the F.S./U.T.S. ratios at 150°C exceeded those at 25°C for all compositions, indicating greater strengthening during fatigue at 150°C. The effect of fatigue or tensile deformation at 150°, 25°, and -195°C on subsequent age hardening showed that the deformatzon increased the rate of precipitation and indicated that mechanically produced vacancies were probably formed during deformation. Fatigue hardening was studied at 150°, 25°, and -195°C, and the effect of room-temperature rests after 10 and 100 cycles was examined. The results confirmed that strain aging occurred at the higher temperatures . DURING the last 15 years various mechanisms of fatigue crack nucleation and growth based on dislocation and vacancy interactions, operating singly or collectively, have been proposed. The probable consensus of present opinion is that the fatigue process in pure metals essentially involves dislocation interactions, and that vacancies formed by such interactions play a minor or inconsequential role. However, there is some evidence that age-hardened alloys tend to overage during fatigue, probably by local vacancy-enhanced diffusion, and strain aging also might be important in selected cases. Furthermore, it has been established that the behavior of quenched-in vacancies in Al(Cu) and other solid solutions is composition-sensitive. Therefore, it seemed worthwhile to investigate various aspects of the fatigue behavior of supersaturated Al(Cu) alloys and to examine the results in terms of vacancy-enhanced effects. EXPERIMENTAL The alloys used in this investigation were prepared from 99.994 wt pet A1 and OFHC copper, the latter containing 0.04 pet 0 as the principal impurity. Six alloys were made, containing, by actual analysis, 0.58, 0.96, 1.96, 2.85, 4.45, and 5.51 wt pet Cu. They were induction-melted in air in graphite crucibles, cast as 7-in. by 7/8-in.-diam rods in graphite molds, and hot-rolled to 5/8 in. diam. The experimental work was a three-part program involving the determination of a) 10' cycle fatigue stresses as a function of alloy composition and temperature; b) the effect of fatigue deformation on subsequent aging of the supersaturated alloys; and c) fatigue hardening as a function of alloy composition and temperature. For determining the 105 cycle fatigue stresses, a portion of the 5/8-in. stock was machined into Krouse rotating cantilever beam fatigue specimens, 2 in. in length by 1/4 in. minimum diameter. These were tested at +150°, 25°, and -195°C (liquid nitrogen) on a Krouse high-speed machine, with special weights to provide lower -than-normal loading ranges, this being necessitated by the small load requirements of those alloys of lower copper content. For the high-temperature tests a small resistance heater was designed to clear the collets and fit in between the chucks, while for the low-temperature tests a hollow nylon cylinder was used, having closed ends drilled to pass a fatigue specimen, and positioned similarly to the heater. A plexiglass container completely enclosed the fatigue machine; rubber gloves fixed to ports in the walls enabled the machine to be operated from outside the box. A tray of magnesium perchlorate dried the air in the container and prevented both atmospheric corrosion fatigue at room and elevated temperatures and troublesome ice build-up at low temperatures. A total of ten to fifteen specimens was used for each combination of alloy composition and temperature. The result of each test was plotted on a standard S-N diagram, and the next stress was selected on the basis of the trends indicated by previous specimens. In this manner a small portion of the S-N diagram was constructed, and the 105 cycle fatigue stress obtained. Alloys of poly crystalline Nb-H have been tensile tested at 77" and 120°K after slow-cooling and after quenching from room temperature. A rationale has been developed to explain the effect of cooling rate on ductility in terms of microstructure. The inferior ductility of the slow-cooled alloys in this temperature range can be attributed to the precipitation of coarse hydride particles that fracture in the early stages of plastic deformation. Quenching Produced much smaller hydride particles and a decreased tendency for initia-tion and popagation of cracks. Prismatic dislocation loops, punched into the matrix of quenched alloys, eliminate the yield point and may Play some role in the low temperature ductility of the quenched alloys. The difference in ductility between quenched and slow-cooled V-H alloys was even greater than that observed in the N b-H alloys. It is well known that the ductility of Nb-H and V-H alloys decreases with increasing hydrogen concentra-tion and with decreasing temperature.1-l1 The follow-ing are some of the numerous mechanisms that have been adopted in attempts to explain these observations: 1) hydrogen-dislocation interarction,4'6 2) lowering of the crack surface energy by adsorbed hydrogen,9'10 3) localized lowering of the niobium bond strength,9 and 4) exertion of pressure inside voids by molecular hydrogen.6 A recent study1' indicates that, in some way, the embrittlement is related to the precipitation of a hydrogen-rich phase, because embrittlement and hydrogen solubility have the same temperature dependence. Most of the investigators observed that at very low temperatures there was a return of the ductility. Thus, hydrogenated niobium and vanadium may be said to exhibit a low temperature ductility minimum."1'8'9 It has been reasoned by most observers that diffusion is required for the embrittlement mechanism to be operative, and that as hydrogen becomes immobile at very low temperatures, the ductility increases. This investigation of the mechanical behavior of Nb-H al-loys under various conditions is an attempt to gain a better understanding of the low temperature ductility minimum. EXPERIMENTAL Tensile specimens, with gage length dimensions 20 by 3 mm, were machined from sheet stock" and both faces were ground on wet 600 grit Sic paper to obtain a final thickness of 0.5 mm. Annealing as described earlier12 resulted in average grain diameters of 0.3 mm. The recrystallized niobium tensile specimens were electropolished in 90 parts H2S04, 10 parts HF (48.9 pct) by volume, at 287°K and 30 v. Hydrogen, which may have been present in the starting material and/or added during specimen preparation, was removed by annealing at 1073°K in a dynamic vacuum of 2 X 10-6 torr. Hydrogenated specimens (1.15 at. pct H) were prepared by reaction with a known quantity of pure hydrogen (obtained by thermal decomposition of UH3) at 1073oK, followed by cooling at the rate of 100" per hr. These were vacuum encapsulated, homogenized at 573°K for 3 to 5 hr, and furnace-cooled. Tensile tests were conducted on an Instron machine at a strain rate of 4 x l0-5 per sec. The gripping device was such that the specimen was positioned below the crosshead. Thus, subambient test temperatures could be obtained by immersion of the device in a cooling bath of either liquid nitrogen or Freon-12. The temperature of the Freon-12 was controlled within ± 0.1°K of the desired temperature by automatically monitoring the flow of liquid nitrogen through a copper coil in the bath. Slow-cooling to 77°K was accomplished as follows. The testing device was surrounded by a rubber jacket, open at the top and with small holes in the bottom. Liquid nitrogen, brought up to the bottom of the jacket, entered the holes and vaporized quickly. The temperature was monitored at the specimen with a copper-constantan thermocouple, and a constant cooling rate of 2 deg per min was easily achieved by controlling the level of the liquid nitrogen outside the jacket. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION Low Temperature Ductility Minimum. Resistometric studies of both Nb-H12 and V-H13 indicated that at tem-peratures less than 150°K, virtually all of the hydrogen

PURPOSE OF UPDATED ESTIMATE FOR MINERAL INVENTORY BLOCKS During the production stage of an open pit porphyry copper mine it was observed that the expected production grade, as determined from the block inventory estimates, often differed greatly from the head grade of ore delivered to the mill. It was determined that, for purposes of production scheduling and monthly forecasting, better in situ grade estimates for mining blocks were necessary. Because all of the bench blastholes were being sampled, and periodic holes were being drilled into the next underlying bench, much more sample data existed than was being used for estimating the grade of nearby mining blocks. It was reasoned that, by periodically updating the mineral inventory block file over the benches scheduled for mining in the next time period using all existing data, better estimates and forecasts for production grade could be made. BLASTHOLE SAMPLE DATA MANAGEMENT The collars of all blastholes in each mined bench were surveyed and assays run on the cuttings representing the full 12-m (40-ft) bench height. The blastholes range from about 5 to 6 m (16 to 19 ft) apart along the front of the bench as well as perpendicular to the front. Overbreakage often left larger spacings between successive blasts. Fig. 17-1 is a plan map of blastholes on a typical mine bench. All blasthole data were keypunched to a format resembling that of the 12-m (40-ft) composite assay data file as follows: [Collar Coordinates Compite Assoy Hole ID Northing East Elewotion Total Copper Oxide Copper] Because of the many blasthole samples available, and in order not to use excessive computer time for running kriged estimates for 30.5 X 30.5 X 12-m (100 X 100 X 40 ft) blocks adjacent to and beneath the mined area, the decision was made to average all the blastholes falling with each 15.2 X 15.2-m (50 X 50-ft) mined block, and use the mean value of the samples as a regionalized variable for purposes of assigning kriged estimates and estimation variance to adjacent unmined blocks. In other words, instead of using individual blasthole samples for making kriged estimates, the holes were grouped by blocks and assay values were averaged and assigned to the centroid of the holes within the block, which was then treated as a single regional variable for purposes of kriging. See Fig. 17-2. VARIOGRAM COMPUTATIONS AND KRlGlNG RESULTS With the many blasthole samples it was possible to compute directional and vertical experimental variograms for both sulfide and nonsulfide copper assays falling within the enriched mineral zone for the full 12-m (40-ft) sample support. Due to the close spaced drilling, excellent definition of the experimental variograms was possible, and the spherical model exhibited good fits. A three-dimensional kriging program was then run over the two or three mine benches involved in the inventory update, and estimated grades reassigned to all mining blocks falling within the range of the new blasthole assay data according to the anisotropisms of the deposit. Better confidence limits could then be assigned to scheduled mining blocks and better short- range forecasts made. An interactive kriging computer program was also applied for the purpose of determining the kriging variance or estimation of error for larger, irregular mining blocks representing the monthly production from a particular bench. The interactive program permitted the operator to enter the limits of the irregular block onto the screen of a cathode ray tube (CRT) as a series of points around the perimeter of individual gridded blocks making up the larger irregular block. The computer then was programmed to calculate the kriging variance of the larger block using all samples fall- ing within range. Thus the limits of estimated grade could be established at any confidence level. Fig. 17-3 illustrates the output from the interactive kriging program showing the sample points entering into the grade and kriging variance computations, and also the kriging coefficient assigned by the computer to each sample.

The prevention of quartz flotation by chelation of activating ions with the tetrasodium salt of EDTA in oleic acid flotation was investigated using a small vacuum flotation cell. It was found that flotation of quartz could be entirely suppressed in the presence of activating ions during complete flotation of hematite. It was further shown that the concentration of activating ions liberated from Wisconsin Gogebic taconite is sufficient to float quartz in an oleic acid system. Large tonnages of low grade siliceous iron ores occur on the iron ranges of the Lake Superior district. Although the lower grade nonmagnetic types are currently not of economic importance, they constitute a large future potential source of iron and steel, and hence have been the subject for extensive research on their beneficiation. TACONITES Of particular interest to the Dept. of Minerals and Metals Engineering at the University of Wisconsin have been the low grade nonmagnetic taconites of the Wisconsin Gogebic Range. These occur as five members of the iron formation and have been described in detail elsewhere.' Essentially they consist of an intimate mixture of hematite, goethite and quartz, with minor amounts of siderite, magnetite, iron containing silicates, and manganese minerals. A typical mean analysis based on the Bureau of Mines analyses' is: SiO2-52.50%, Fe2O3-43.40%, (Fe-30.38%), A12O3-1.15%, P2O5-0.07%, Mn2O3-0.29%, CaO-0.07%, (S-0.03%), Loss on ignition-2.00%. The quartz in these ores is of a microcrystalline variety,2 and so intimately associated with the iron oxide minerals that extremely fine grinding, in the order of minus 325 mesh, is required for liberation. During grinding and subsequent flotation, the concentration of quartz activating ions in the pulp becomes sufficiently high to activate quartz which floats along with the iron minerals in the presence of oleic acid. cook3 and co-workers concluded that oxidized iron ores released appreciable quantities of quartz-activating ions in water pulps. This is shown to be true in the present investigation. As a matter of fact, application of this phenomenon, as well as the intentional addition of activating calcium ions, is made use of in the an ionic flotation of silica from the iron oxide minerals.4,5 In view of the above, it becomes almost impossible to effect a sharp separation of quartz in the oleic acid flotation of the iron oxide minerals from these taconites, even with satisfactory liberation. This fact led to the current investigation to find a means of linking the activating ions with a chelating agent. The aim was to establish basic data for the quartz-water-oleic acid system which might not only be applicable to iron ores, but also to the flotation of other siliceous ores as well. EXPERIMENTAL METHODS Vacuum Flotation Cell: The vacuum flotation used in this investigation is similar to that used by previous investigators.6,7,8 The cell consisted of a 100 ml graduated cylinder with the lip removed. Vacuum from a water aspirator was applied to the cell through a trap; suitable tubing, and a rubber stopper inserted in the top of the cell. Constant absolute pressure was maintained by means of a manometer connected to the trap with a tee. Flotation: The required amount of activating ion solution was pipetted into a beaker. This was then diluted to 99.0 ml with water having a pH below that desired for the test, or so adjusted with HC1. After addition of 1.0 ml of oleic acid solution (2.0 mg oleic acid per ml), the pH was readjusted to the desired value with NaOH, and the entire solution transferred to the cell containing 1.5 gm of quartz. After vigorously agitating the cell and its contents for 2 min, the vacuum was applied to the cell and the estimated degree of flotation observed for a 3-min period. Activating ions studied included Ca++, Mg++, Al+++, and Fe+ + + added as chloride solutions. In addition,

Calculated wellbore pressures were obtained for parameters of radilcs ratio and permeability. In all cases bur two, after-production was allowed to occur for one day. The calculated pressure build-up data were compared with actual pressure build-up data from a condensate well. The paper discusses the comparison, gives reasons for, inability to match calculated (2nd actual data, and presents conc1usions derived from the comparison. INTRODUCTION Considerable information has been published on the decline in wellbore pressure for oil and gas fields resulting from production of fluids. Considerable information also has been published on pressure build-up for oil fields, but relatively little has been published for gas and condensate fields. Perrine' summarized the equations derived for pressure build-up in oil wells and showed how the different methods could be applied. On the other hand, very little theoretical information has been published on pressure build-up in gas or gas-condensate wells.2-4 Tracy,' by pointing out the similarity between the equation describing oil wellbore pressure decline and the equation describing gas wellbore pressure decline, showed how methods of pressure build-up analysis could be applied to a gas well. In analyzing pressure build-up data for gas or gas-condensate wells, it would be very desirable to compare actual pressure build-up data with calculated pressure build-up data. Such a comparison would lead to a better feeling for the quantitative picture of gas-well build-up curves and would help to establish a degree of confidence in a given build-up curve. This paper discusses the comparison and presents conclusions made from it. Calculated wellbore pressures are given for parameters of radius ratio and permeability. In all cases but two, after-production was allowed to occur for one day. The work was done in an attempt to evaluate the reserves of a gas-condensate field. As will be discussed later, it was not possible to make an evaluation. METHOD OF CALCULATION The method used for solving the depletion and pressure build-up behavior for a gas-condensate well was that developed by West, Garvin and Sheldon.5 or the IBM 704 computer program used, it was assumed that liquid condensing out of solution would have only a minor effect on the flow behavior. Therefore, the field was treated as having single-phase flow, with the gas saturation S, remaining constant at unity minus the connate-water saturation Sw. As will be discussed later, this may not have been a good assumption. It also was assumed that oil production could be considered as equivalent gas production by using a conversion factor based on an analysis of the liquid produced. An outer boundary condition of no-flow was assumed. BASIC DATA The data required for the study were reservoir properties, fluid properties and production data. Reservoir properties included the following: thickness h, 179 ft; porosity, 0.194; connate-water saturation, 0.43; gas saturation, 0.57; permeabilities k, 1.0, 0.5, 0.25 and 0.15 md; radius ratios re/rw, 800, 1,000 and 2,000; wellbore radius rw, 5 in.; initial reservoir pressure P, 6,529 psia; and reservoir temperature, 272°F. The selection of permeabilities was based on core-analysis data showing an average air permeability of about 2 md. With a relatively high connate-water saturation, the average effective gas permeability would be about one-half, or less, of the air permeability. The selection of radius ratios was based partly on the observed rapid decline in wellbore pressure during production and partly on the fact that the well was believed to be located in a relatively small fault block. Reservoir fluid properties were obtained from a reservoir fluid study on a recombined sample of gas and condensate. Gas formation-volume factors were calculated from pressure-volume measurements made at reservoir temperature. Gas viscosities were calculated by the method of Carr, et al,G from an analysis of the re-combined sample. These data are shown as a function of pressure in Table 1. Germanium single crystals strained in tension at 600°C slip on the {Ill} plane and, macroscopically at least, in the <110> direction. Deformation is in homogeneous: various localized rotations are observed, as is a banding consistent with secondary slip banding. The structure after deformation is polygonized with a domain size of about 2x1O-3 cm. In relaxation tests, an incubation period prior to flow is observed, of duration inversely related to temperature and applied stress. Under continuous loading, there is a sharp first yield point. A critical resolved shear stress therefore must be cited with respect both to temperature and to rate of loading. At 600°C, when loading proceeds at 2900 psi per min, it is 1310 psi. The yield point phenomenon is suggestive of Cottrell&apos;s solute atom atmosphere theory and five points of qualitative agreement with this theory are found. PLASTICITY of germanium at elevated temperatures has been reported by Gallagher,&apos; who ascribed it to slip on {Ill) planes and described some associated effects. Preliminary experiments with single crystals of silicon and germanium loaded as simple beams confirmed {ill) as the slip plane of both materials.V his was demonstrated by the standard technique employing traces on two surfaces of known angle on a deformed crystal of known orientation.3 These experiments did not fix the slip direction, since more than one glide system operated. Uniaxial tensile straining is preferred for this purpose in order to restrict slip to one predominant system and to provide an unequivocal determination of the orientation change with respect to the stress axis. Experimental Method Specimens were diamond-sawed from germanium crystals containing about 5x10-5 wt pct Sb prepared by the zone-leveling process described by Pfann and Olsen;4 these specimens measured about 81/2 in. long, 0.20 in. wide, and were of various thicknesses from 0.035 to 0.060 in. Prior to testing, a specimen was coated over 1 in. or more of length at each end with Apiezon wax, chemically polished (in a solution of 15 ml HF, 25 ml HNO,, 15 ml CH3COOH, and 3 to 4 drops Br2), and dewaxed in warm xylene. A brief re-etching after scribing through a complete wax coating with vernier dividers provided gage marks at 0.200 in. intervals on the polished surface. A specimen with grips soft soldered to the ends was passed through the furnace tube and the grips pinned to the tensile machine in series with a stress gage. The Schopper testing machine is best described by reference to the illustration on p. 107 of Schmid and Boas5 and is operated with the pendulum arm locked, fixing the upper head. Load is applied through the screw-driven lower head, manually or by reduced speed motor. The furnace is 21/2 in. long surrounding a 4x7/16 in. ID quartz tube and was positioned about the specimen to permit free motion. The inert or reducing atmosphere required was sufficiently provided by a flow of helium introduced at the center of the furnace tube, with the tube ends loosely plugged with asbestos paper. Surface corrosion was slight. The stress gage employs a Be-Cu strip with SR-4 units incorporated in a simple bridge network with provision for balancing and calibrating. The bridge output on loading is fed through a Leeds and North-rup dc amplifier to a Speedomax 10 mv recorder, and calibration is obtained by dead loading. Experiments of two types have been conducted. Most have been in relaxation at constant elongation. One stress-strain curve has been taken with the machine continuously driven. Following extension of a specimen, Laue X-ray photographs were taken to obtain the orientation change between deformed and undeformed regions, recorded on a single film by translating the specimen in a plane normal to the beam between exposures. Sequences of such multiple exposures were made on some specimens to include the entire orientation range on one film. Slip Direction To obtain a maximum orientation change with a single slip system, crystals of very closely <110> axial orientation were used. Infrared spectra disclose that oleic acid will not adsorb on the surface of pure beryl unless the mineral is first activated with HF. The adsorption of oleic acid on HF activated beryl is attributed to the hydrogen bonding of oleic acid monomers to F-surface bridging sites. These sites are formed as a result of the reaction of HF with chemisorbed water or surface hydroxyl. Characteristic infrared spectra of physically adsorbed oleic acid are correlated with flotation at different pH at temperatures of 25°C and 75°C for colloidal and -60-mesh particles. The usual mode of occurrence of the beryllium mineral beryl, Be3A12Si6O18, is in granite pegmatites as pale green, white, or yellow crystals. A dark green gem variety, emerald, may be found in the wall rock of pegmatite veins or in mica schist. The most important beryl deposits in the United States are in the Black Hills District of South Dakota, and several mountain ranges of central and west-central Utah contain potential commercial sources of this mineral. Several papers have been published concerning the flotation of beryl with different conditioning reagents. Kennedy and O&apos;Meara1 reported on the essential use of HF in the flotation of beryl from different ores. The use of calcium hypochlorite to separate HF activated beryl from feldspar after flotation with an amine collector was made by Runke.2 A report on the activation of beryl with different cations using sodium oleate collector was presented by Viswa-nathan and co-workers.3 Flotation of beryl with sulfonate collector and different activating salts was employed by Fuerstenau and Bhappu.4 The role of the surface charge or zeta potential in the flotation of beryl with different collectors and salts was also extensively investigated.5"7 Previous infrared investigations by the authors8 disclosed that the orthosilicate beryllium mineral, phenacite, reacts with oleic acid to form a chemisorbed oleate monolayer on the mineral surface. Thus, chemisorption is the effective mode of adsorption in the phenacite-oleate acid flotation system. In contrast, neither chemisorption or physical adsorption of oleic acid occur on the surface of pure beryl as evidenced in this study. Efforts were subsequently made to determine the mechanism of activation and collector adsorption for HF pretreated beryl. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES Large, white, terminated crystals of beryl were obtained from Madagascar through Ward&apos;s Co., Monterey, Calif. The crystals were broken into -60-mesh fragments in a porcelain mortar. Part of this prepared material was ground to a powder with a Fisher Grinder using an agate mortar and pestle. The powder was transferred to a graduated cylinder and mixed with 500 ml of distilled water. After 5 min, the colloidal suspension was separated from the settled particles by decantation and used as a stock for infrared test determinations. Adsorption tests were performed by first transferring 20 ml of colloidal suspension to 50 ml glass centrifuge tubes. The solids were then centrifuged out and the liquid was discarded. Then, the solids were pretreated with one molar HC1 or one molar HF. After 15 min, the solids were again centrifuged out. The mineral solids were washed free of residual acid by repeated centrifuging and water washing operations. Then, 20 ml of distilled water was added to the solids, and the resultant suspension was used for test purposes. In the preparation of mineral for flotation tests, 1.5 g of -60-mesh beryl was deslimed by removing the colloidal fraction by three successive water washes and decantations. Then, the coarse particles were pretreated with either one molar HCl or one molar HF for 15 min. The mineral was next washed free of acid with distilled water, and 20 ml of distilled water was added to the beryl prior to collector conditioning. The conditioning of mineral with collector was performed in 50 ml centrifuge tubes to which either NaOH or HC1 was added for pH modification. One drop (6.0 mg) of U.S.P. reagent grade oleic acid or 2 ml of 0.01 molar sodium oleate was added to the pulp and stirred at about 1500 rpm for 3 min at a

WHILE direct measurements of the growth of precipitate particles during aging is of fundamental value, few such measurements have been made. Direct measurements by means of optical or electron-microscopy and X-ray techniques are preferred, however, many of the aging studies have been based on indirect methods such as electrical resistivity and hardness. Because of the minute size of most precipitate particles (less than 1000A) the light microscope is of limited use while electron microscopy is subject to slowness, etching problems and consequent resolution problems. It is fortunate that alloys of the Nimonic type, based on Ni-Cr-Ti-Al, lend themselves to accurate and relatively easy particle size measurements. With proper balance of titanium and aluminum, the only aging precipitate is the gamma prime (r&apos;) Ni3,(Al, Ti)2 phase and this phase is the basis of the high-temperature strength of these allos.3-6 The Ni3(Al, Ti) phase is a face-centered-cubic, ordered structure with nickel atoms occupying the cube faces. Titanium atoms can replace three out of every five aluminum atoms and when substituting do so preferentially.2 Electron microscopy has shown that during aging of most of the commercial alloys of this type, precipitate particles are unusually uniform in size and distribution, and that the volume of (r&apos;) phase is large (20 pct).4,7 The aim of this investigation was to measure the growth of (y&apos;) phase during aging. In so doing, it was hoped that a clearer understanding of the aging process would be attained. X-ray line broadening was used as the measure of precipitate particle size. This technique was selected because it can measure and average the diameter of thousands of particles in one operation. The variations in hardness and matrix lattice parameter with aging were also studied and related to the particle size. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE An alloy of the following composition was studied: Cr Ti A1 C Ni Wt pct 20.71 2.98 1.43 0.04 bal. At. pct 22.06 3.47 2.95 0.18 bal. The alloy, a 15- lb vacuum melt, was forged to 1/2-in. diam at a temperature of 1900" to 2200°F; was solution heat treated for 4 hr at 2000°F and water quenched; and was then aged in various ways. The ASTM grain size was 4 to 5. No (7&apos;) phase could be detected by X-ray analysis after solution treatment and electrolytic extraction. Aging was performed on 2-in. long specimens at 1400°, 1500°, and 1600°F for increasing times. One-half inch sections were removed after each time increment and were then electropolished in a solution of H3P04 saturated with chromium trioxide at a potential of 30 v and rectified with a tantalum electrode. Rockwell hardness measurements were taken using one side of the polished specimen. Matrix lattice parameter determinations were made on the other side using filtered chromium radiation references with the position of the (220) line of a silicon standard. To enable the precipitate particles of the (y&apos;) phase to be measured using X-ray line broadening techniques, it is first necessary to separate and concentrate this phase by electrolytic extraction. Extraction is necessary because the difference between matrix and precipitate lattice parameters is only approximately 0.5 pct and intensities of.the (y&apos;) phase lines are very weak relative to those of the matrix. The extraction techniques employed have been described before and found to produce a reasonably quantitative separation.398 A water solution of 15 pct H3Po4 is used at a current density of 0.5 amp per sq in. at 6 v. The precipitate particles are separated from the liquor by centrifuging and decanting and are then washed, dried and repowdered. A plot of the X-ray intensity vs diffraction angle for the (111) line of the precipitate particles was used as a measure of particle size. The intensity curve approximated the shape of Gaussian distribution function and its breadth was measured at the half height. The (220) line of a silicon standard was used to correct the measured line breadth for instrumental and other broadening errors. The Scherrer formula was used to calculate particle

There has been considerable interest in the possible use of titanium in magnesium alloys.&apos; Zirconium has shown some promise in this connection2 and its general similarity with titanium suggests that the latter might act in a similar manner. A literature survey revealed that quantitative data on the Mg-Ti system was unavailable. Several patents3 have claimed that titanium additions from 0.2 to 4 pct to magnesium alloys were possible, but no mention was made as to the form in which the titanium existed in the alloy. Kro114 succeeded in introducing only traces of titanium into magnesium by bubbling TiCl4 through the metal under argon or by reacting it with sodium titanium fluoride. The application of theoretical data given by Carapella5 based on Hume-Rothery&apos;s principles, involving atomic size factor, crystal structure, valency and the electro-chemical factor, suggests that a Mg-Ti alloy is a favorable case, and the system appeared to warrant experimental examination. Experimental Procedure and Results THERMAL ANALYSIS If titanium is appreciably soluble in magnesium, a change in the melting point of the magnesium might be detectable using standard cooling curve methods. Magnesium was melted in graphite crucibles under an argon atmosphere, the assembly being enclosed in a silica tube. Graphite thermocouple protection tubes served also to stir the melts. The apparatus was very similar to Fig 1, with the addition of a refractory and baffle system to prevent undue heat losses from the top of the crucible. Chromel-alumel thermocouples were calibrated using Al of 99.97 pct purity. Dominion Magnesium Limited sup- plied redistilled high purity magnesium of the analysis given above. Titanium was added in three different forms: 1. Titanium powder —100 mesh, from the Titanium Alloy Manufacturing Co., Niagara Falls, N. Y. 2. Sheet titanium from the U.S. Bureau of Mines, produced by Mg reduction of TiCl4. 3. Magnesium —50 pct titanium master alloy from Metal Hydrides Inc., Beverly, Mass. The melting point of the high purity magnesium used was measured experimentally as 651.0°C. More than a dozen tests were conducted using titanium from the three sources referred to above, in calculated additions up to 20 pct titanium, at temperatures between the melting point and 1000°C and holding periods up to 6 hr. In no case was evidence obtained of solubility of titanium in magnesium, using inverse-rate and time-temperature curves. The melting point of the magnesium was unchanged within the accuracy of measurement, namely -+0.5°C; and no other thermal arrests were detected. Metallographic investigation of the thermal analysis billets indicated that the titanium additions were apparently mechanically entrapped in the magnesium in segregated areas. Consequently, these samples were not analyzed for titanium. The master alloy proved to be a mechanical mixture of titanium particles in a magne- sium matrix. These results indicated that the titanium solubility, if such existed, could not be obtained by the usual thermal methods. X RAY DIFFRACTION INVESTIGATION In an effort to detect solubility of titanium in magnesium, samples were investigated using both the Debye-Scherrer and the Focusing Back-Reflection methods. Filings from samples of the thermal analysis billets and from pure magnesium were annealed in argon one hour at 350°C to relieve mechanical strain. Measurements made of the interplanar spacings showed no difference between the Mg-Ti samples and pure magnesium. The interplanar spacings could be measured to within 0.0002A, and the greatest variation found was 0.0004A, in the back-reflection method. The diffraction lines for magnesium were not shifted by the titanium additions indicating that the solid solubility of titanium in magnesium is of a very low order—less than 0.5 pct. From both diffraction methods, a d or interplanar spacing of 0.817A was obtained for the redistilled high purity magnesium. This latter value is not given in the standard X ray diffraction cards for magnesium metal or vacuum distilled magnesium. Theoretical calculations for a close-packed hexagonal space lattice for magnesium indicate that the planes {2134) should give a line which was found. The relative intensity for this reflection at 0.817A is slightly less than that at 0.870k for magnesium. Density data are reported on 15 saturated hydrocarbon liquids in the range of 35° to 250°F. and 1000 to 8220 lb. per sq. in. The apparent liquid densities of methane and ethane are shown to vary with the density of the system in which they are present. A method is proposed whereby the densities of liquid hydro- carbon mixtures containing both methane and ethane in solution may be computed at elevated temperature and pressures within the accuracy of usual engineering computations. A method of computing the shrinkage of crude oils based upon the gas-oil ratio, gas analysis, and crude gravity is outlined. Introduction The densities of naturally occurring liquid hydrocarbon mixtures are important in many petroleum engineering computations. Calculation of the shrinkage of a subsurface sample of crude oil as the natural gas is evolved is one example of the use of liquid-density data. Density data are reported on 15 saturated hydrocarbon liquids in the range of 35° to 250°F. and 1000 to 8220 lb. per sq. in. The apparent liquid densities of methane and ethane are shown to vary with the density of the system in which they are present. A method is proposed whereby the densities of liquid hydro- carbon mixtures containing both methane and ethane in solution may be computed at elevated temperature and pressures within the accuracy of usual engineering computations. A method of computing the shrinkage of crude oils based upon the gas-oil ratio, gas analysis, and crude gravity is outlined. Introduction The densities of naturally occurring liquid hydrocarbon mixtures are important in many petroleum engineering computations. Calculation of the shrinkage of a subsurface sample of crude oil as the natural gas is evolved is one example of the use of liquid-density data. Rf sputtered quartz has been successfully used in multilayer interconnects for MOS devices. The target potential was 2000 v peak to peak with a frequency of 13.56 Mc per sec. The sputtering rate was approximately 60A per min with an operating pressure of argon gas at 10 to 15 p. The dielectric strength is 8.0 x 10&apos; v per cm and the pinhole density is less than 2 x 10-2 per sq mm. Infrared absorption peaks for the Si-O vibrational bands we at 9.4, 12.4, and at 22.5 p. The etch rate of the sputtered SiO2 is 1200A per min. MOS devices have been fabricated using multilayer interconnects with no degradation of electrical characteristics. MULTILAYER interconnects require an insdating film between the metal layers which can be deposited below any potential eutectic temperature. Sputtered Si4, which can be deposited with substrate temperatures below 200°C, satisfactorily meets the multilayer insulation requirements and has been used to prepare MOS circuits with multilayer interconnects. "Only the coal of the Sunnyside district in Carbon County is coked. Two companies, the Utah Fuel Company and the Columbia Steel Corporation, operating adjoining mines at Sunnyside and Columbia, produce coke.The Utah Fuel Company has 819 beehive coke ovens at Sunnyside. Only 350 ovens are being operated at the present time, largely because the smelters which had been using Sunnyside coke changed their equipment from blast furnaces to reverberatory furnaces.The Columbia Steel Corporation operates a plant of 33 Koppers type by-product coke ovens at Ironton, near Provo. About 800 tons of coal are used per day to produce coke for the company's iron blast furnace plant pie ovens produce about 400 tons of coke, 12,000,000 cubic feet of gas, 9,000 gallons of coal tar, 3,000 gallons of benzol and several tons of ammonia sulphate per day.The total coke production for the State from the earliest output of record in 1880 until June 30, 1924, is 5,947,714 tons."
