In their paper on the directional properties in cold-rolled and annealed commercial bronze,' Phillips and Samans suggest that cupronickel, under distinctly different treatments, shows both "45" ears" and "90" ears. Fig. I shows the ears on some cupronickel cups made some 17 years ago for bullet jackets for small arms ammunition. In this case the material heated to 425° C. had "45" ears, while that annealed at 950°C. showed long "90" ears" when drawn with the same tools. The method of cupping, the shape of cupping tools, etc., were found to have very little influence on the earing tendency, but the deeper the cup was drawn, the higher the ears would be. Method of Manufacture Cupronickel cast bars were 1 in. thick. Ordinarily, they were rolled with numerous passes to a thickness of 0.4 to 0.2 in., according to conditions. They were then given a single intermediate anneal, and rolled to finish thickness, frequently 0.032 in. After a last anneal the material was cupped with a "cut and draw" operation. SHORTLY after our previous paper on this subject was printed,1 we located a source of uncertainty in the results arising from the unexpected fact that hydrogen slowly reduces silica at 1100° C. in presence of iron, even when the iron nowhere touches the silica, although in absence of iron it does not do so. This difficulty has been completely obviated by the use of a small high-frequency furnace, which enables us to heat the specimen for analysis without raising the temperature of the silica vessel to a point at which any appreciable reduction of the silica glass occurs. We now describe this modification of procedure, and present some typical results obtained with it. For any given specimen of steel, the results are entirely definite and. reproducible, but their precise significance is still open to some question, as indeed is true of all methods of oxygen determination so far developed. Further elucidation of this question is to be expected from the cooperative comparison of the several methods now under way under the auspices of the Bureau of Standards at the instance of the Iron and Steel Division of the A.I.M.E.

ELECTRIC power requirements for Climax are similar to those of most metal mines, except that large blocks of power are used underground and there are a number of other unusual applications. Power is furnished to the Company by the Public Service Co. of Colorado over two 100,000-volt lines to a bank of three 3333-kva. transformers 100/13.8 kv. These transformers are designed so that with the addition of forced cooling their capacity may be increased a third at 12,000-ft. altitude. On the secondary side of this bank is a 15-kv., 1200-amp. oil circuit breaker provided with automatic reclosing relays allowing three successive short circuits before lockout. From this breaker 13.8-kv. power is transmitted to a central switching station where all circuits radiate to the different operations of the property. Each circuit is protected by a 23-kv., 600-amp. oil circuit breaker with by-pass and isolating disconnecting switches. Pulses from large underground explosions which traverse the rock beyond the "fracture" and "plastic" zones do not behave as a spherical elastic model. Observed attenuation is greater than that predicted by the elastic wave equation, and the pulse form changes in a different manner, i.e., it usually lengthens with the first power of the distance. To more clearly define a mathematical real earth-wave model, detailed analyses of the spherical elastic and the Voigt viscoelastic models have been made, and results compared with observed wave forms from large confined chemical and nuclear explosions. TRANSIENT SPHERICAL ELASTIC WAVES Scope of Investigation Transient elastic spherical waves were investigated in detail. However, an elastic model is not, in general, an exact representation of wave propagation in rock. An understanding of transient elastic waves is desirable for gaining insight into explosive-generated wave phenomena because it can be employed for comparison of more complex and realistic models, such as the Voigt model, or others which may simulate real earth waves. The study was concentrated primarily on the peak values of the radial wave parameters : displacement, particle velocity, acceleration, stress, and strain.

THE effect of grain size on the mechanical properties of the bcc metals has been a subject of intensive theoretical and experimental study.'-l5 Quantitative relationships have been established experimentally between yield stress and grain size and between the ductile-brittle transition temperature and grain size in a number of metals.6"15 Much significance has therefore been attached theoretically to the grain size dependence. In all these experiments, different grain sizes were always achieved by annealing specimens at various temperatures. The implicit assumption was that any change in the dislocation substructure or in the distribution of impurities which might occur simultaneously with the production of various grain sizes had only a negligible effect on the mechanical properties. The validity of this assumption, however, is questionable. transformation in iron-nickel alloys is actually an extraneous phenomenon due to inadvertent compositional changes in the martensite if the heating rate is not sufficiently rapid. This complication can be avoided by up-quenching for the reversal treatment,5 and then the stabilization does not appear. Clearly, the lattice imperfections and strengthening produced by the reverse transformation are not responsible for the marked stabilization which has been observed by other investigators in these alloys. Data will be presented in this note to show that, at least in recrystallized tungsten of commercial purity, the difference in the ductile-brittle transition temperature of specimens annealed at various temperatures is more a result of a variation in the distribution of impurities rather than of the difference in grain size produced by the anneal. Ductile-brittle transition temperatures in tension were determined on powder-metallurgy tungsten specimens recrystallized at various temperatures. Tensile specimens having a gage length of 1.50 in. and gage diam of 0.18 in. were recrystallized at 1450°, 2000°, 2350°, 2550°, 2750°, or 2800" for 30 min in a vacuum furnace at a pressure of 1 x 10"5 mm of Hg and then tested at a constant extension rate of 8 x 10 per sec in an argon atmosphere from 100" to 800". Typical quantitative analyses of impurities are given in the Table. These results show that, within the precision of the analyses, see Table, annealing did not result in any detectable change in the impurity contents of the specimens, nor was there any detectable difference in purity between specimens having large differences in grain size annealed at the same temperatures . The results of the tensile tests yielded three distinct ductile-brittle transition curves approximately 225' apart. As shown in Fig. 1, data of specimens annealed at 1450°C and those of specimens annealed at 2000°C (O) fell on Curve A. Data of specimens annealed at 2350" and 2550°C fell on Curve B, and those of specimens annealed at 2750" and 2800°C fell on Curve C. The decrease in ductility with increase in annealing temperature became so pronounced that one third of the specimens annealed at 2750" and two thirds of the specimens

A previous article1 by the authors contained a general description of the new roasting furnace herein described but it did not go into detail as to the metallurgical behavior or the results obtained. Believing that such information would be of great value, they have elaborated on the subject and have given many unpublished details. The furnace described applies the principle of roasting finely divided zinc-sulfide ores, now produced in large quantity by the flotation process, in gaseous suspension; that is, the ore particles are carried, in suspension, in a current of air and gaseous products of the roast. The relatively great fineness of flotation concentrate presents difficulties and problems of roasting in furnaces of the ordinary type; the fine ore is forwarded through the furnace in the form of a shallow bed and its very fineness leads to dense impervious bedding which prevents oxygen from reaching the interior of the bed, thus unduly lengthening the time of roasting and preventing the elimination of the last of the sulfur. The fineness of the concentrate, normally, should lead to a rapid and complete roast, for the speed of roasting is a function of the surface exposed to oxygen, which surface is greatest, per unit of weight, in very fine material. The difficulty in bed roasting is to get the oxygen to the particle. If the fine ore, during the roasting, could be freely suspended in oxidizing gases, full advantage could be taken of the great surface conferred by its fineness. This fundamental idea, of course, is not new, for the Stedtefelt furnace, familiar to the older metallurgists, is an example of it; but the manner in which this is accomplished may be new. Locality and Geological Occurrence.—The Atpine region of Southwest. Colorado. cort~prieiog the San Juan and Uncon~paghre Mountains, is con~posed of a deeply eroded sheet of acid eruptive rocks, overlying in part gneissic schiets, and in part limestones and sandstones, including portions of the Silurian, Devonian, arid Carboniferous systems. The section is clearly and beautifully exposed along the Uncompghre River from its headwaters to its exit from the mountains. The river's course from the town of Ouray towards the Los Pinos agency is due north, and four miles from Ouray, in this directiou, the Uocampaglire receives from the east the Red Casm Creek. Following up the narrow canon we find the section through white. sandotone in strata dipping to the north and west, and belonging either to the lower or middle Devonian system. Presently the steep cafion-like character of the ravine gives place to more gentle slopes, ad we have entered crysralline rock—porphyry. The contact is well marked, for the sandsbne, to a depth of from six to ten feet, resembles quartzite, i. e., is serui'fusd. Ascending still higher, a small

THE present investigation was planned as a survey of the lead-rich portion of the ternary lead-antimony-silver system by thermal analysis. Since, however, a rigorous application of the conventional thermal analytical method is time consuming, an attempt was made to speed up the investigation by reducing the time required for a single thermal analysis. This was done by increasing the rate of cooling to 12° to 18°C. per minute. Since such a rate does not permit even an approach to equilibrium conditions, the melt was stirred vigorously by a stirrer operating at the high rate of 665 r.p.m. This proved to be effective in obtaining cooling curves with distinct points of arrest and of excellent reproducibility, which satisfactorily compare with those obtained at a rate of 1° to 2°C. per min. with or without slow stirring (Fig. 1). By this method the lead-rich end of the lead-antimony system and a series of ternary alloys in sections parallel to the lead-antimony side of the ternary system were investigated and it was observed that the two branches of the' liquidus curve of the .binary alloys did not intersect at the eutectic temperature. An equivalent effect was observed in the ternary system. The eutectic temperature of the binary lead-antimony system was found to be 252.0°C., which confirms the recent investigation by Pellini and Rhines,1 who determined the eutectic temperature to be 251.5°C. The observation that the curves of primary crystallization of the lead-antimony system do not intersect at the eutectic temperature was previously made by Dean.2 Dean explains the phenomenon by assuming the existence of a compound Sb4Pb. He felt that super-cooling was not the cause of the phenomena because he was unable to influence them by inoculation. The X-ray investigation by Solomon and Morris-Jones,3. the metallographic investigations by Stead,4 Charpy,5 Gontermann,6 and Dean, Zickrick and Nix,7 and the numerous investigations of physical properties, definitely disprove the occurrence of any compound. The work of Dean was not confirmed by Broniewski and Sliwoski,8 whose experiments did not show any irregularity and who report a eutectic composition of 13 per cent antimony and a eutectic temperature of 250° to 252°C. at a rate of cooling of about 6°C. per min. Abel, Redlich and Adler9 then report a eutectic composition of 12.1 per cent upon reviewing the previous, publications and adding a few of their own cooling curves. In 1934 Quadrat and Jiriste10 found from careful analyses of the bottom portion of slowly cooled hypereutectic melts that the eutectic contains only 11,4 to 11.5 per cent antimony. The general drift of the discussion as to the relative merits of pressure- and exhaust-fans has resulted, if we may judge from the prevailing practice, largely in favor of the latter. The subject has been hitherto treated, however, with special reference to highly gaseous mines, the effect of the form of ventilation upon dust-explosions having been too little considered. Even in mines containing practically no gas, dust-explosions may occur; and if, as I believe, pressure-fans are to be preferred for their effect upon dust, it may be worth while to reopen the debate, and to challenge the advisability of exhaust-ventilation under certain conditions. There are several forms of colliery-ventilation, which may be described as follows: Plain or simple pressure-ventilation, in which the fan acts as a pressure-fan, and the movement of coal is unobstructed at the surface by doors or equivalent devices in drifts or shafts, the traveling and haulage. thus being in the return-current. Plain exhaust-ventilation, in which the fan acts as an exhaust-fan, the movement of coal being likewise unobstructed at the surface, and the traveling and haulage being in the intake.

ALTHOUGH chronologically, the Sb-Bi system was the first one studied by the writer, the theoretical basis of the equations used in this paper is fully discussed in the writer's paper on the iron-carbon system,1 because he believed that many would be more interested in the iron-carbon alloys. He suggests, therefore, that the reader consult that paper to familiarize himself with the theoretical aspect of the thermodynamic treatment outlined herein. This paper is divided into two parts: Part I deals with the Sb-Bi system and Part II deals with the lead-rich side of the Sb-Pb system. Although the former system has not much practical interest now, it has great theoretical interest in that it, is the one system that for a long time was thought to have (and under specific conditions still has) an anomalous solidus, which no amount of physical investigation could adequately account -for. The latter system of course, is particularly interesting in the lead-rich end. It will be shown that the thermodynamic method is capable of predicting reliably the equilibrium position of the solidus, and thus acts as a check on the experimentally derived solidus.

Each spring most secondary schools select their best student science exhibits, prepared during the preceding academic year, and send them to regional "Science Fairs", which now number over 220. Winner-finalists of these regional contests are then sent to the annual National Science Fair, conducted by Science Service, a non- profit institution for the popularization of science, for final judging. (The Fair is now known as the "National Science Fair-International" because of participation by finalists from Japan, Thailand, Germany, France, Sweden and Canada.) For the first time since the Fair was started in 1950, AIME participated in the awards presentation. Held this year in Baltimore, Md., from May 5 to 9, five members of AIME's Washington, D.C., Section consented to represent the Institute as judges. They were: Marlin J. The iron ores of Canada have attracted more or less attention in this country for a number of years ; and having had an opportunity this past summer to examine some of them, especially the magnetic ores, I have thought it might be of sufficient interest to the members of the Institute to put on record some of my observations. The region examined contains, for the most part, only the rocks of the Laurentian system. Much of it was originally covered with a dense growth of pine, which interfered with successful prospecting for ores. However, after the best of the timber had been cut off, fire generally got into the bush and cleared it up pretty well. This, besides making travelling about easier, exposed large surfaces of rock, and rendered the work of the prospector far more liable to be rewarded with success, while removing many of its hardships. The general appearance and productiveness of the land have, however, been far from improved by this process. It would be difficult to find a more desolate-appearing country than some of these pine woods after fire has been through them. The country examined may be, for convenience, divided into two

THE Liberty Bell cyanide precipitate is unique in that it is apt to vary widely in composition in the course of very short, periods of time, and a method of refining and melting that would prove highly satisfactory at one cleanup would yield almost an hopeless "mess" it a second. Table I gives a general conception of the wide range in grade and composition of those raw precipitates. It is evident that no one standard flux could be expected to produce a high-grade bullion with such a widely variable precipitate, and that any method of treatment with acid requires most careful consideration. Refining by Acids Naturally, our first efforts to improve our precipitates were directed along the lines of acid treatment. Table II embodies the results of careful sampling and analysis of one cleanup at the time when wet refining reached its maximum development at this mill. We have now discarded all methods of wet refining, successfully replacing them by amore scientific method of flux calculation described herein, but it is believed that a general description of this wet refining is warranted as it throws some interesting side lights on acid refining in general.

THE object of this note is to report briefly certain results of investigations on the Fe-In phase diagram. BISRA-high purity H-iron and 99.9 pct pure indium were used to prepare the alloys. The experimental techniques consisted of thermal analysis, optical metallography, and X-ray diffraction. A phase diagram based on the present results as well as those reported earlier by the author' is shown in Fig. 1. It is seen that the liquidus points fall on a smooth line which meets the monotectic isotherm at 1470°C. The liquidus extends up to 3.4 at. pct In. The phase boundary separating the two liquidus L1 and L2 is shown dotted. The experimental solidus meets the monotectic isotherm at -0.9 at. pct In. The 6/6 + L2 boundary drops steeply to the 6 + La/y + L2 boundary at -1350°C. In this region, it is impossible to detect satisfactory thermal arrests because of the steep phase boundary. The present diagram shows that indium lowers the temperature of the d/y transforma-tion and raises the temperature of the y/a transfor-mation. The y +d region is found to be very narrow. Indium gives rise to a restricted y field when alloyed with iron. The width of this field is between 0.4 and 0.5 at. pct In. Details of the alloys containing 40 and 50 at. pct In have already been reported by the author' and the transformation temperatures of these alloys are included in Fig. 1. It appeared from optical metallography and X-ray diffraction that the room temperature solubility of indium in a iron is less than 0.28 at. pct since alloys of 0.28 at. pct In and above, slow cooled to room temperature, contained dark etching second phase particles situated both in the matrix and grain boundaries of the a-grains, see Figs. 2 and 3. These particles were identified to be unalloyed indium by X-ray diffraction. The lattice parameter of the a phase reached a maximum of 2.8672A at the indium level of -0.28 at. pct. The present diagram, Fig. 1, is in substantial agreement with that of Stadelmaier and Fiedler' except for certain differences in detail. For example, they found the monotectic composition and temperature to be 7.0 at. pct In and 1443oC, respectively, while the present work indicates them to be 3.4 at. pct In and 1470°C. The 6 + L2/y + L2 transformation is indicated in the present work to occur at -1350°C, whereas Stadelmaier and Fiedler find this to occur at -1320°C. They also claim that the width of the y field is 0.2 at. pct In while the present work shows the width to be between 0.4 and 0.5 at. pct In. 1) Indium, when alloyed with iron, gives rise to a restricted y field, the width being >0.5 at. pct In.

In open pit mining, as in other industries, it has I become necessary to improve operating efficiency in order to combat higher labor and supply costs. Moreover, orebodies are becoming leaner, pits are getting deeper, stripping ratios are increasing, and hauls are getting longer. There has been a steady increase in size, speed of operation, and reliability of the various machines involved in breaking, loading, and hauling ore. Changes have seldom been radical but are rather the result of steady improvement. Drilling: Notable advances have been made in the use of rotary drills and air powered percussion drills for blasthole drilling. Several hundred of these machines are now in use as replacements for churn drills in softer rocks such as limestone and shale. Their application to hard rocks such as iron ore and taconite is under current investigation, but in the Lake Superior iron mining district, open pit blast-hole drilling in ore has been accomplished almost exclusively by standard churn drilling. The only recent advance has been the use of larger machines drilling 9-in. holes. This has increased drilling speed somewhat and allowed wider hole spacing, with consequent cost reduction.

The Rocky Mountain region is defined with some variations for different purposes or by different organizations. For oil and gas development, Wyoming, Montana, Colorado, northwestern New Mexico, and Utah are included in the order of their apparent importance. Portions of adjoining states, such as North and South Dakota, Nebraska, Arizona, Nevada, and Idaho, arc attributary to this region, but have little or no oil or gas production. Nebraska and New Mexico are considered separately (see pp. 412 and 415), and most of the discussion in this report will be confined to Colorado, Montana, and Wyoming. Utah has produced about 200,000 bbl. of oil from the San Juan and Virgin fields, which are isolated and shut in at present. The Clay Basin field in northeastern Utah produces natural gas and distillate, and the Farnham field in central Utah produces carbon dioxide gas. Other Utah areas of some interest are listed in Table I. The Cedar Creek (Baker-Glendive) field in southeastern Montana extends into North Dakota, but is listed under Montana. The other states are in the main wildcat areas, and exploration in 1944 was at a minimum. However, geological and geophysical parties are reviewing them for further testing. Oil production in Colorado, Montana and Wyoming was 459,000 bbl. more than in 1943. Increases of 713,000 bbl. in Colarado and 731,000 bbl. in Montana offset a loss of 985,000 bbl. in Wyoming. This was the first decline in Wyoming since 1938. Field production figures and state totals are given in Table I. Total drilling activities in these three states and Utah increased from 687 wells making 1,442,511 ft. of hole in 1943 to 916 wells making 2,245,803 it. in 1944. Wildcat drilling increased from 163 wells making 331,193 ft. of hole in 1943 to 171 wells making 389,144 it. in 1944. These figures include all drilling wells making footage, not starts or completions, and represent an all-time high in drilling. The year 1944 witnessed the greatest concentration of seismograph activity that the region has had. The Rocky Mountain Oil Scouts Association reported that in 1943, the previous peak year, 91 crew months of work were performed; in 1944, the time was 254 crew months. About 67 per cent of the work was in Wyoming, 18 per cent in Montana, and 12 per cent in Colorado. Twenty-three blocks totaling 400,000 acres were reported assembled in Colorado, and 161 blocks totaling 4,000,000 acres in Wyoming. Information about other states was not given. Fourteen unit agreements were approved by the Department of the Interior, as compared with 13 in 1943. The 1944 agreements were all in Wyoming. The South American porphyry copper province includes most of the Andean orogen, excepting the tin province of Bolivia. Porphyry coppers have not been commonly found within the tin belt, though copper-tin deposits in San Rafael, Peru and copper-tungsten deposits in Llamuco, Chile, are known. James" shows the depth to the Moho to appreciably thicken where the tin belt exists, but disclaims any genetic significance from this coincidence. Table I gives some of the most important porphyry copper deposits explored to date, but does not include Antaminas, Peru, nor a number of other large skarn deposits associated with intrusions. V. D. Perry* points out that porphyry copper mineralization does occur to some extent in the intrusion associated with many of these skarn deposits. Also not included are the suspected possible porphyry type occurrences, such as, for example, quartz-sericitically altered lower levels of the Casapalca mine, Peru. Many deposits not well enough documented to list in a summary paper are also excluded. Should anyone care to tabulate all other large copper de- posits in South America, they could demonstrate that a tremendous potential awaits the proper political and economic climate in the future.

OIL burners, oil furnaces, and methods of installation, have been the subject of many articles, but information concerning oil-burning systems, based upon scientific principles, is still in great demand, especially in the manufacturing districts of our country. Fuel oil, as it is termed (this being the residuum from oil refineries), has for many years been of great service to our manufacturers, and has justified its popularity not only by producing a superior manufactured product, but by turning out approximately 50 per cent. more product than can be made with coal fuel under like conditions. To install a system requiring only an oil-storage tank, a small pump, and an oil-supply main with numerous laterals leading to the various burners, furnaces, boilers, etc., is a comparatively simple matter; and, because fuel oil is very volatile, it is not necessary to heat it, even during the winter months in a very cold climate.
