This year the metal mining industry is in for some difficult decisions as the nation struggles to control inflationary pressures resulting from higher production costs and a money-squeeze policy. Re- clouding these problems will be campaign oratory as Congress seeks reelection. Charges will be hurled back and forth between a Republican White House and a Democratic Congress. Inflation and Vietnam will be the big one. Hut pollution i. coming on strong. President Nixon has formed a new Council on Environmental Quality although he already had named a similar unit within his Cabinet six months ago. Both are charged with bringing 1.0 bear all of the Federal Government's talents on the focal points of antipollution measures The biggest task will be to find out how many different "units" are currently mixed up in these efforts.

A cash-flow factor is any figure acquired in an evaluation that effects the cash flow potential of an eventual operation. Table I is a list of some of these cash-flow factors. There are more, such as, the payments and penalties in a smelter schedule if the concentrate would be sent to a smelter. During an evaluation it is necessary to maintain a two-way flow of communication between the evaluation people and financing people. To accomplish this, it is necessary to translate the vocabulary of the evaluating people into the vocabulary of the financing people, or geologic and engineering jargon into dollars and cents. This is done by cash-flow studies in which cash-flow factors are input, which when logically manipulated using accepted rules and procedures of accounting, provide an output in dollars and cents.

The aging characteristics of a titanium alloy containing 13 pct V, I1 pct Cr, and 4 pct A1 have been investigated by hardness measurements, X-ray diffraction, and metallography. The P phase decomposes into 0 + a, and 0 + a, + TiCr, above about 1050°F; below this temperature a transition phase, believed to be w, precipitates first, followed by a, and TiCr,. The observed hardening is attributed to these reactions. Cold working of solution-treated specimens accelerates hardening and raises the hardness level attained. A TTT diagram is proposed. NEW titanium-base alloys, designated as "all-beta," have recently been developed. These alloys contain large amounts of P-stabilizing elements such as molybdenum, chromium, or vanadium. When cooled from the solution temperature, they consist only of P; in particular, the martensitic a,' phase does not form.

EIGHT years ago the Hecla mine, a lead-silver producer, situated at Burke, Idaho, was producing ore from but two levels, the 300- and the 600-ft. All hoisting was done with a 12- by 16-in. slide-valve, double-reel, hoist. The hoist was being worked to its capacity and was unsuitable for hoisting from greater depths. As the work of opening a new level was about to be started, it became necessary to remodel the then-existing equipment or install a new hoist. The recent advent of electricity from Spokane had made available a cheaper power than steam. By a series of tests conducted throughout the Coeur d'Alène district, it was found that it cost $109 per year to generate a horse-power with steam. Electric power was to be had for $50 a horse-power per year. It was decided to substitute for the engines a motor-drive, of sufficient capacity to operate from the 900-ft. level, and ultimately install an entirely new hoist. After disconnecting the engines, installing a new shaft, and making a few minor changes, a 300-h-p., 2,300-volt, 514-rev. per min., variable-speed motor of the induction type was geared to the reel-shaft. The reels were supplied with 3/8 by 4-in. flat rope, and the duty of the hoist was about as follows: Cage, 1,700; ore, 2,600; car, 1,400; rope, 2,250; total, 7,950 pounds. The Bristol ammeter chart, Fig. 1, shows the combined current-consumption of the hoist- and mine-motors. The large intermittent load is clearly shown ; this produced harmful fluctuations in the voltage of the long, lightly-loaded, 60,000-volt transmission-line from Spokane to the Coeur d'Alènes. A microcrack process zone is frequently suggested to accompany macrofractures in rock and play an important role in the resistance to fracture propagation. Attenuation of surface waves propagating through mode I fractures in wedge-loaded double-cantilever beam specimens of Westerly granite has been recorded in an attempt to characterize the structure of the fracture process zone. The ultrasonic measurements do not support the generally accepted model of a macroscopic fracture that incrementally propagates with the accompaniment of a cloud of microcracks. Instead, fractures in Westerly granite appear to form as gradually separating surfaces within a zone having a width of a few millimeters and a length of several tens of millimeters. A fracture process zone of this size would necessitate the use of meter-sized specimens in order for linear elastic fracture mechanics to be applicable.

Ions of p31 and B 11 were implanted in natural insulating diamond macles. The thin (-0.4µ) layers showed sheet resistances of 107 to 1011 ohm per sq and activation energies of 0.17 to 0.34 ev above room temperature. However, no Hall effect could be measured, indicating that mobilities were less than I to 10 sq cm per (v-sec). Such low mobilities may be due to excessive scattering due to radiation damage in the bombarded layer or to very high concentrations of active compensating impurities. Annealing did not materially change the room -temperature properties, but the temperature was limited to -800°C by surface graphitization, the latter process probably being accelerated by lattice damage in our diamonds arising from the ion bombardment. A weak n-type thermoelectric power was detected after p31 irradiation, but it cannot be presumed that we have made the phosphorus ions active as donors in diamond. The natural diamonds have a high and uncontrolled concentration of impurities and, when coupled with the radiation damage and graphitization problems, would appear to seriously limit the quality of semiconductor that we can presently achieve by ion implantation in diamond. ALTHOUGH diamonds are usually thought of as insulating in terms of their electrical conductivity, it was found about 15 years ago that natural semiconducting diamonds do occur rarely, and these were designated as type IIb diamonds. These p-type semiconducting diamonds were found to be dominated by an impurity level 0.37 ev from the valence band. Evidence today based on correlation of the concentration of acceptor states from Hall effect measurements with the impurity concentrations determined by neutron activation analysis point to aluminum as the dominant acceptor impurity.' The compensating donor is believed to be nitrogen, which has a donor level 1.6 ev above the valence band.' However, only a small fraction of the total nitrogen content in the diamond is electrically active. An infrared absorption band at 7.8 p and ultraviolet absorption near 4 ev have been associated with nitrogen, the former providing a quantitative measure of nitrogen content.3 The nitrogen content is -l020 cm-3 in insulating or type I diamonds, but is less than 10'' in natural semiconducting diamonds. Much of this nitrogen is distributed in platelets oriented in (100) planes and not atomically dispersed in the diamond lattice.4 Semiconducting diamonds have been deliberately formed by incorporating impurities into the graphite charge in the high-pressure apparatus used to form diamonds.5 These manufactured semiconducting diamonds are always p-type, and while some show the 0.37 ev level due to aluminum, most such samples have been ascribed to impurity banding effects.6 The best natural or manufactured semiconducting diamonds have hole mobilities near 1500 sq cm per (v-sec) at room temperature, and those with the 0.37-ev level can be analyzed to reveal an acceptor concentration of 3 to 8 X 1016 cm-3 and a donor concentration 3 to 10 times lower.' NO bulk n-type diamonds have ever been reported, but the electron mobility has been measured as 1900 sq cm per (v-sec) by irradiating a diamond with ultraviolet to excite electrons out of the deep nitrogen donor level or other levels.7 New hope for the formation of n-type diamond has emerged from the ion-implantation method whereby desired impurities are introduced into a crystal lattice by bombardment with a high-energy beam of the impurity ion. It was found in the case of silicon that the usual donors such as phosphorus and arsenic and acceptors such as boron and gallium could be implanted into silicon. Wentorf and arrow' produced semiconducting layers on diamonds by an ionic bombardment in a glow discharge at potentials of about 2 kv. The observed typeness from thermoelectric probing seemed to depend on the atmosphere gas (nitrogen, argon, or hydrogen) rather than on the electrode material, but the nature of the conduction process in the thin damaged surface layer is completely unknown. A Russian group under Vavilov has attempted high-energy ion implantation in natural diamonds using boron and lithium ions9 and later also phosphorus, aluminum, and carbon ions.10 Their papers claim n-type layers from lithium, phosphorus, and carbon implant and a p-type layer from boron and aluminum implant, though the methods of type determination are not described in detail. Under government contract support, the Ion Physics Corp. has studied ion implantation in several semiconductors. While the bulk of their study1' was devoted to the irradiation of silicon, they did carry out a short study on boron and phosphorus implantation into natural diamonds. They did observe surface conducting layers but did not determine the typeness of the layers. For our experiments, phosphorus and boron were chosen as the dopant ions because of their respective donor and acceptor behavior in germanium and silicon. Moreover, they are the lightest mass dopants of the shallow level donors and acceptors from columns 111 and V of the Periodic Table (excluding nitrogen which is already present in diamond), and will have the largest depth penetration into the diamond lattice. The effects of casting texture, grain orientation and grain size upon the performance of Alnico permanent magnets is described. Single-crystal specimens were produced by special sintering and grain coarsening techniques to study the effect of crystal orientation. In addition to texture and orientation effects, an analysis of the results indicates that the permanent magnet performance is impaired by a refinement of the grain size. AN excellent historical review of the development of Alnico permanent magnets has been prepared by Bozorth.1 The desirable permanent magnet characteristics of Fe-Ni-A1 alloys were discovered in 1932 by Mishima.2,3 The work of Ruder' showed that the alloys were age-hardenable, and Betteridge5 defined the best composition and heat treatment for the magnetically isotropic alloy known as "Alnico 3." Horsburgh and Tetley0 increased the energy product by the addition of cobalt and copper, "Alnico 2," and Oliver and Sheddon7 demonstrated that cooling in a magnetic field improved the residual induction of this alloy. Jonas8,9 then disclosed the great practical benefits of heat treating an alloy of higher cobalt content in a magnetic field and the resulting alloy, "Alnico 5," has become the standard of the industry. This paper describes the fundamental aspects of a procedure which can be used to further improve the properties of these anisotropic permanent magnet alloys. A study of the casting techniques used in the production of anisotropic Alnico permanent magnets indicated that the magnetic quality was affected by the as-cast macrostructure. Improved performance was observed in magnets containing a high percentage of columnar grains whose long axes were parallel to the magnetic axis of the casting. McCaig10 studied the effect of such columnar grain structures upon the magnetostriction characteristics of similar alloys, however no data was presented showing the effects on other magnetic properties. The following paragraphs describe two experiments which were conducted to determine the effect of various grain orientations upon the energy product. Special composite molds were prepared of highly conductive and highly refractive components to remove the heat of solidification from the casting in a controlled manner. Representative macrostructures produced by these techniques are shown in Fig. 1, along with the relative volumes of favorably oriented columnar grains. The alloy, Alnico 5, has the highest permanent magnet performance of any commercial magnet material. It has the nominal weight composition of 8 pct Al, 14 pct Ni, 24 pct Co, 3 pct Cu, and 51 pct Fe. A heat of this material was cast into molds producing the type A and B grain structures shown in Fig. 1 and pairs of the resulting magnets were placed in heat-treating boats so as to eliminate any biasing effects of boat position. After a standard heat treatment the type A magnets, with 16 pct of the volume composed of favorably aligned grains, had a maximum energy value of 3,940,000 gauss-oersteds, while the type B magnets with 73 pct aligned grains averaged 5,090,000. It is to be regretted that the author of the article did not give us complete details of his charges, and thus prevent a possibly fatal error in the very beginning of the discussion of the points raised in his communication. As it now stands, I think we will have to fall back upon the statement that, "every conceivable mixture of fluxes and ores (A and B) has been used." A record $19.7 billion in minerals was produced by United States industries in 1963. This was some $800 million above the previous high established in 1962. Preliminary statistics compiled by the U.S. Bureau of Mines show that most metals, nonmetals, and fuels gained both in value and volume of production. The 1963 total represents the largest value increase since 1956 and continues an upward trend begun in 1959. Product.ion and value of all mineral fuels rose, with anthracite registering a remarkable 20% value increase. Nonmetals advanced 591 in value, gains exceeding losses by 213 to 1 among individual commodities. Heavier industrial demand and the settling of labor difficulties were among the factors contributing to increased output of such materials as iron ore, bauxite, molybdenum, lead, and zinc, which accounted for most in€ the growth in metal output. Silver prices continued to rise and, as a result, production value of that metal gained 132,.

Loss of visibility due to the occurrence of atmospheric fogging in underground mine airways can lead to longer travel times and loss of production efficiency, an increase in the frequency of vehicular and foot traffic accidents and difficulty in checking rock surfaces for instability and loose material. Where hot and humid surface air meets colder underground air, conditions for fog formation may be present. Further, suspended particulate matter from diesel exhausts or stoping operations together with slow movement of air along passageways may contribute to formation. This study describes an investigation being undertaken with the cooperation of Kennecott's Ozark Lead Co. to identify causes of the problem.

MUCH has been published on the general subject of metal mine ventilation but, so far as I can discover, few specific data on selection of fan equipment to meet the requirements of a given mine ventilation problem are available. This article is intended to point out some of the more important considerations which influence the selection of such equipment. It will be assumed that the mine operator is able to determine the quantity of air which is necessary in the various parts of his mine to produce the required results and the pressure in inches water gage needed to circulate this quantity of air through the mine. There may be instances in which this assumption is not justified, but the fact remains that, with proper engineering talent, these data can be approximated sufficiently close for practical purposes.
