The removal of hydrophobic coatings of flotation collectors from iron ores becomes of interest when a duplex flotation process is considered for upgrading, when a pelletizing process is considered for a concentrate floated with a fatty acid or a soap collector, or when a disposal of froth products from cationic silica flotation is of environmental concern. Ozone can oxidize organic compounds rapidly, thereby removing the hydrophobic coatings of flotation collectors. Ozone is widely used for treating and purifying drinking water, waste water treatment, and for chemicals processing (Murphy and Orr, 1975; Rice et al., 1980). Its uses in metallurgical operations, however, are very sparse (Allegrini et al., 1970; Chernobrov and Rozinoyer, 1975; Ishii et al., 1970; Iwasaki and Malicsi, 1985; Matsubara et al., 1978). Yet, its high reactivity and the absence of potentially hazardous byproducts become of interest in destroying flotation reagents adsorbed on mineral surfaces or remaining in mill water for recycle or for discharge. Duplex Flotation A duplex flotation process, as applied to oxidized iron ores, would involve a fatty acid flotation of iron minerals followed by an amine flotation of the siliceous gangue from the rougher iron concentrate. Such a process has been used in the Florida phosphate fields. Fatty acid coatings cannot be removed as readily with a simple acid or alkali treatment from iron oxide surfaces as from Florida phosphates. A combination of reagents, such as lime and quebracho, lime and alkali phosphate, or sulfuric acid and oxalic acid, has therefore been proposed. In a previous article (Iwasaki et al., 1967) , the use of activated carbon was found to be effective in removing fatty acid coatings both in the duplex flotation and the pelletizing processes. The use of ozone offers another approach to the removal of fatty acid coatings from iron oxide surfaces. To investigate the possible application of the duplex flotation process, a specularite ore from Michigan analyzing 36.5% iron was used. A 600-g (1.3-1b) sample was ground in a laboratory rod mill together with 250 g/t (0.5 lb per st) of sodium silicate to -150 µm (-100 mesh). This was transferred to a Fagergren laboratory flotation cell, and deslimed four times at 20 µm (quartz equivalent). The deslimed pulp was transferred to a laboratory conditioner, diluted to 40% solids, and conditioned with 250 g/t (0.5 lb per st) of soda ash and 250 g/t (0.5 lb per st) of oleic acid. The conditioned pulp was then transferred back to the Fagergren cell, floated until barren of froth, and the rougher froth product was returned to the cell and cleaned. The results are presented in Table 1. The cleaner concentrate at this point analyzed 45.3% Fe. The cleaner concentrate coated with fatty acid was transferred to a 2-L (0.53-gal) beaker. While the pulp was agitated with a glass T-stirrer, ozone was bubbled into the agitated pulp for 15 minutes at a rate of 10 mg/min (0.00035 oz per min) ozone (250 g/t or 0.5 lb per st 03 feed). It was observed that the pulp ceased to froth after about 10 minutes. The amine flotation of siliceous gangue from the ozonated pulp was carried out first by conditioning with a dextrin, a commonly used starch depressant for iron oxides. This was followed by flotation with a stage addition of an ether amine at increments of 100 g/t (0.2 lb per st). Three stages were required to float the siliceous gangue to near completion. The three froth products were combined and cleaned twice. When the cationic flotation Rougher, Cleaner 1 and Cleaner 2 cell products were combined, an iron concentrate analyzing 64.5% iron was obtained at an overall iron recovery of 72.8%. Pelletizing Fatty acid flotation concentrates have been pelletized successfully in northern Michigan mills. But at other locations, fatty acid coatings on iron flotation concentrates proved so undesirable in agglomeration that other methods of concentration had to be sought. For example, a sinter mix containing iron ore concentrates upgraded by fatty acid flotation resulted in decreased productivity. This occurred because the micropellets of particles with the hydrophobic coating are less tolerant of moisture. Thus, the bed permeability is lost (Beebe, 1965). The agglomeration of concentrates obtained by the fatty acid flotation alone, and the hydrophobic coatings destroyed by ozonation or by the duplex flotation process, is not expected to cause any difficulty since the surfaces of the concentrates would be hydrophilic. Removal of the fatty acid coating with activated carbon, indicated by the loss of floatability, was shown to restore the decrepitation temperature of wet balls during drying cycle (Iwasaki et al., 1967). Disposal of Cationic Silica Flotation Froths Recent demands of iron blast furnaces place the silica content of the magnetic taconite pellets at about 5%. Conventional process for magnetic taconite involving fine grinding and magnetic separation often produces magnetic concentrates analyzing in excess of 5% silica. This is due to the presence of the middling grains of siliceous gangue and magnetite. Cationic silica flotation of magnetic taconite concentrates (DeVaney, 1949) may be used to reduce the silica content. But the amine coating on siliceous gangue becomes of environmental concern when the flotation tailings are discarded in tailing ponds.

The curriculum presented here is an outgrowth of discussions by the Committee on Geophysics Courses of the A.I.M.E. in previous years. It had to be a compromise between the desires voiced by employers of geophysicists, professional geophysicists and the possibilities at an average college. There one has to face the questions of the available teaching staff, the inertia of administrators and teachers set in their ways, and the red tape involved in modernizing antiquated curricula. It is, of course, not ideal to have colleges and universities lag Io years behind the times. Rather, instead of being prodded by industry, they should be ahead of industrial needs. There should also be a certain amount of leeway for the student in any college curriculum. All these points had to be considered in drawing up a curriculum, which, instead of being narrowly termed "geology" or "geophysics" was rather called "earth science." It gives the student a chance to specialize in one of the various branches represented by teachers on the faculty of The Pennsylvania State College, giving as options Geology (with subdivisions of Mineralogy and Paleontology), Geophysics, Geography, and Meteorology. Table iA represents the option of geophysics in the curriculum that envisages that a student may want to make his career in any of the fields encompassed by the American Geophysical Union or in geoexploration. This is, of course, only the start of an education that in most cases will have to be followed by graduate work for complete professional training. The outlined curriculum is definitely of an engineering type and is identical for all of the four options mentioned for the first two years. Specialization will start in the junior year but even thereafter the branches are kept as closely allied as feasible in order to permit a student to change from one tO the other (e.g., because of a different aspect in the mployment situation) with a minimum of additional work. Table IB shows the geophysics option according to subject matter, indicating the considerable amount of work in the fundamentals of mathematics, physics and chemistry with a liberal number of geology courses, and some engineering. The courses in the field of geophysics are limited—just two lecture courses as a general introduction and one field course, to permit the student a visualization of the correlation between mathematically analyzed physical data and the geological realities. Thesis work is considered essential to teach the student, while he is still in college, some things S. F. Kelly has mentioned as desirable: (I) following of instructions for somewhat independent work; (2) organizing of material, and (3) producing a readable report. This, together with the personal contact with the advising faculty member, will help in forming a student's personality. The seminar course attempts to get the student into the habit of reading current literature, so that he can keep abreast of the times.

WINCHELL, Minneapolis, Minn.-There are two questions I should like to ask: First, does the Department still adhere to the decision made in the East Tintic case? Second, does the Department require placer ground to he of such value that, in the opinion of the Forest Service employees, it will pay to work, before admitting the location to be valid? T. C. HOYT,* Ogden, Utah.-With reference to the first question: the Department does not hold to that decision, as it was reconsidered by the Secretary Of the Interior, and the Department is governed by the decision of the Secretary Of the Interior, on those points always. The Department of Agriculture makes no decision as to what constitutes a sufficient discovery. The mineral examiners simply report their findings and Opinions. These are transmitted to the chief of the field division of the General Land Office, who in turn transmits the reports to the Commissioner Of the General Land Office, who decides whether the report raises an issue requiring a hearing. If a hearing is ordered, expert testimony is given on the question of the discovery, as well as the evidence of practical people who operate in the vicinity of the claim in question. As to the extent of placer values considered sufficient to justify a location, my answer will need a little amplification. I couldn't answer it directly for the reason that sometimes people resort to placer claim location as a means of acquiring land for Other purposes than placer mining, which makes it absolutely necessary that the government give close attention to the question of whether good faith has been shown, as it is the evidences of good faith that largely determine whether a report adverse to a claim shall be made. That is a difficult point to cover sometimes. For instance, in the region I have recently visited there are some 17 miles of a valley, from ¼ to ¾ mile in width, all covered by placer locations. It is valuable stock-grazing land, and is stocked at the present time. It also contains a stand of timber, and is on the watershed of an important stream-important from the fact that it furnishes the water supply to government storage reservoirs, and to pending reclamation and Carey Act projects. In this case the placer claims will not be disturbed as mere locations. They will simply remain there, and there will be no action with reference to them until the claimant asks for patent or, before patent, begins to denude that watershed and remove that timber. Then the government would direct that the mineral experts go on to the ground, examine it, prospect it, and submit their report, with a view to seeing if

The purpose of the mill tests reported herein, was to determine the relative power efficiency of fast and slow rod mill speeds on the ores of the Tennessee Copper Co. The tests were carried out at the lsabella Mill of the Tennessee Copper Co. under normal operating conditions. Every effort was made to keep the ore supply and other conditions constant, but it will be noted that some slight variation did occur. The open circuit 6 by 9 rod mill, and ore, used in these tests have been previously described.' Four motor drive pinions were available and the tests were performed in the following manner: each pinion was used to drive the mill for a period of one week. Constant sampling prevailed during the test run, and a composite sample for each speed test was made. Realizing that some slight liner wear took place during the four-week test-run, and that some slight variation of the ore may have taken place, a second and then a third series of four-week test- runs were made with the four different pinions. The screen analysis of each of the thee-week run samples at the various speeds were composited and the results are shown in Table 1. The authors feel that the 12 weeks of operation consumed during these test-runs would represent fairly the effect of each mill speed. The data of line 37 show that within the error of sampling and plant operation, the tons of minus 65-mesh material generated per horsepower hour was the same at all four speeds.

IT is a somewhat curious circumstance that the newest of the Institute's several awards should be conferred in the oldest of our several professional fields—for there is little question that geology and mining have antedated metallurgy and petroleum. Perhaps so did geophysics. After all, one geophysical instrument, the magnetic compass, has been successfully employed for many centuries. Young in years the Jackling Award may be, but in distinction—whether in terms of the title it bears or in terms of the first three medalists (Reno Sales, E. D. Gardner, and the late Father MaceIwane)—the Jackling Award is already one of the ranking awards of the Institute. The name of the 1957 medalist will bring added luster to an already illustrious roll. J. L. Gillson was born and brought up in Evan-ston, Ill., in an area characterized by singularly flat and uninspiring topography, and devoid of ore deposits and even of bedrock—a most unlikely environment from which to expect a future Jackling medalist to emerge! On graduating from high school he enrolled as a chemistry major at Northwestern University. At the end of his frkshman year his scholastic prowess had won him a prize of two chemistry books. But these went unread, for about this time he came under the spell of U. S. Grant, that distinguished and enthusiastic geologist who for many years was head of Northwestern's geology department. From thence forward Joe was a dedicated geologist. After a Navy interlude in World War I, he went to MIT for graduate work, substituted for the late Professor Palache for one year at Harvard in mineralogy, received his doctorate at MIT and stayed on as a meniber of the MIT faculty, where the geology department was headed by that great dean of all economic geologists, Waldemar Lindgren. In 1926 Joe spent a summer looking into barite deposits for the du Pont Co., and since 1928 he has been du Pont's chief geologist. Do men who lead such active lives in our exploration organizations generally have permission to publish their observations? Do they generally find time to publish, even if they have permission? Alas, no. But in Joe Gillson's case, yes. His bibliography runs to well over two score papers, including one of the very first papers in this country on the applications of petrography to problems of Portland cement. He has written on such topics as the origin of talc and the genesis of ilmenite, fluorspar, and alkaline rocks. Each year for a number of years his annual reviews of industrial minerals in the Mining Congress Journal have been eagerly awaited. - Do men who do so much to advance their science have anything left to give to the advancement of their profession? In Joe Gillson's case, yes. He has been a vice president of the Mineralogical Society of America and has been active in the councils of the Society of Economic Geology, particularly in their research programs. This year he is president of the American Geological Institute, currently perhaps the most challenging post to which a geologist may be elected. His contributions to AIME scarcely need documentation, so I shall mention only three—his chairmanship of the Committee on Democratization of the Institute, a committee whose work and recommendations brought a new and hopeful leaven to AIME at a time when this was sorely needed; his chairmanship, a few years ago, of the Industrial Minerals Division; and his current place on the Board of Directors as Vice President of the Institute. Such' a catalogue of contributions and achievement, even as condensed as I have had to make it, certainly merits the Jackling Award. Yet, implicit although not often expressed in the conferring of most awards is the hope that besides recognizing a distinguished career, it will provide stimulus for further effort. In the present instance, such an expectation is already well on the way to fulfillment. Only recently Joe Gillson has undertaken the editorship of a new and greatly revised edition of the Institute's Seeley Mudd volume, Industrial Minerals and Rocks. And so, Mr. Chairman, it is with pleasure and enthusiasm that I present Dr. J. L. Gillson for the 1957 Jackling Award.

INE operators have a choice of several classi- fications of mechanical loaders. Within each classification there are many types and makes available. Table I lists loaders on which manufacturing data as to operating characteristics are available. This paper discusses the conditions met in a mine as they affect these characteristics. It is assumed that management will provide satisfactory engineering, supervision, power, maintenance, loader service within a concentration of workings, and a balanced working cycle served by balanced production equipment. These are factors which affect the optimum operational efficiency of a loader. The conditions which determine loader choice are: Height of Vein—The main limitation to the use of a loading machine is the height to which the vein is mined; i.e. a loader cannot be higher than the place in which it is to work unless rock is taken. Since there are several low vein loaders being developed and successfully applied, this does not appear to be a requisite of an efficient mining operation. The maximum useable height of a loader should be equal to the working seam thickness less a working clearance for travel and operation. H is a loadability factor and is important because the clearance over the top of the conveyor chain to the roof or roof support must be greater than the largest broken particle or else the particle and/or the conveyor chain may be broken. From this standpoint it might be desirable to use a lower height machine even though it may have a smaller capacity, though this is warranted only when increased lump realization offsets lower man-day and machine pro- duction rates. Ivan Given has stated, "Loading should not be handicapped by securing lump only to grind it in the breaker." Width of Working Place—The width of a working place is the greatest width a place may be safely driven. The working place includes not only the face but the roads the loader must tram when mucking out more than one face. The width is limited by the system of placing props with sufficient room between them for the machine runner (about 2 ft). Maximum width of place in which the loader will operate at maximum efficiency is determined by the type of mounting. With track-mounted loaders, maximum width of place is determined by maximum angular swing of the loading head and proximity of track to the face. The use of double track leads to added expense and operational complexities. Several mines that have used double-track systems have found that a substantial saving is made by the use of machines that load out wider places. Trackless loaders may work in rooms of any maximum width. Minimum width of place in which a loader will operate is determined by width of the loader plus a safe movement area for the operator. Often a barodynamic study of the mine will show that either an increase in room width and/or a change in the system of propping may be made by using roof bolting, full or part-width room timbers, removable aluminum I-beams at the face, etc. Increasing the width of a working place will, in general, increase loader operating efficiency by providing more material per fall and by decreasing the preparation and moving time per ton. A change in the system of propping that would increase the minimum width might permit the use of a higher capacity loader with safer working conditions. Proper face tirnbering is necessary to insure safety from roof falls and because the speed of preparation and loading generally increases since the men work with greater assurance and there is less chance of kicking out posts. WHILE remodeling No. 1 section of the concentrator at the Washoe Reduction Works of the Anaconda Copper Mining Co. during the summer of 1912, for the purpose of ascertaining what additional metal recoveries could be made by improvements in concentration practice which had been developed by the staff of the Boston & Montana Reduction Department, at Great Falls, it was deemed advisable to carry on some experiments on the treatment of the regular mill tailings by roasting and leaching, to see whether the losses of metal values might not be still further decreased. In the course of these experiments about 5,000 tons of tailings were roasted, and of the resulting calcine about 200 tons were leached. The results were so satisfactory that it was decided to continue the work on a larger scale, particularly as regards the leaching end of the process, and construction work on an 80-ton roasting and leaching plant was accordingly commenced during the latter part of February, 1913, and is being pushed as rapidly as possible. 80-Ton Leaching Plant. This plant will consist of one 20-ft. roasting furnace of the MacDougall type, specially adapted to the work of roasting for leaching; two leaching tanks, .32 ft. in diameter by 12 ft, deep, together with the necessary solution tanks, air lifts, precipitating launders, etc. It has been decided to precipitate the copper from solution on scrap iron, so as not to hamper the roasting and leaching departments by any weakness that might develop in the precipitating department. It is, however, the intention to experiment with a number of different methods of precipitation ; for example, by electrolysis and by hydrogen sulphide.

Conclusions drawn by previous research workers with reSPect to the relation between Pressure gradients and/or velocity and oil recovery obtained by laboratory water flood tests have been in disagreement probably due to variable procedures and unnatural conditions and materials. The Bradford Laboratory of the Pennsylvania Grade Crude Oil Association as part of its secondary recovery research program has conducted nineteen water floods on two long cores of widely differing characteristics in an attempt to clarify this relationship and make it an aid in predicting flooding pressures in the field. Unlike previous research procedures the present experiments were conducted with the aim of duplicating field conditions as closely as possible by using long unextracted consolidated cores, a live crude, and natural brines for both flooding and, connate water content. Also, the pressure gradients and flooding velocities were representative of field conditions where similar sands were being flooded. Eleven floods on one core and eight floods on the other core showed increased recoveries and lower residual oil saturation with increased flood pressure gradients and flood velocities. A marked decrease in recovery was obtained from both cores at very low flood velocities. This pressure versus recovery relationship is shown to hold up to the point of water breakthrough and also up to the 100 and 1 produced water to oil ratio point. INTRODUCTION The possibility of water flooding oil sands was suggested by Carl1 of the Pennsylvania Geological Survey in 1880. It is not known when the practice was tried intentionally for the first time, but its beneficial effects were noted in the annual production rate of the Bradford field as early as 1907. The practice was illegal in Pennsylvania until 1921. Early water floods in the Bradford field usually consisted of shooting or splitting the casing secretly to permit subsurface waters to enter the producing sands under hydrostatic head. As it was noted that the benefits of water flooding seemed to be proportional to the quantity of water dumped into the well many also began to utilize surface sources after the practice became legal. It was probably during the middle 20's before many producers realized that the pressurehead of the water upon the producing sand determined the rate and quantity of water that would enter the sand. Hence, rate and quantity of production appeared to be a direct function of input pressures. By 1927 a few producers had ventured the installation of pressure pumps in order to increase water-input rates and production through the combination of hydrostatic and hydraulic pressures. The adoption of pressure flooding and the "five-spot" drilling pattern in the Bradford field were essentially simultaneous. Water-input pressures in 1930 seldom exceeded 300 p.s.i. at the well head or 1100 p.s.i. at the sand face. Since that time, water-flood producers in the Bradford-Allegany fields have gone to higher and higher pressure until today 600 p.s.i. at the well heads is called a low pressure flood. Many high pressure floods now operate at 1300-1400 p.s.i. at the well head. The limiting and advisable pressure at the sand face has been pronounced as that pressure just under what is required to lift the overburden or to cause formation parting: According to this rule any water flood operation utilizing well-head pressures nearly equal in pounds per sq. in. to 1.1 times the average depth in feet to the top of the producing sand would be considered as a high-pressure flood. Despite the higher pressure trends in the Bradford-Allegany field operations and the results of early laboratory water flooding research, the desirability and benefits of high input pressures are still questioned by many operators, particularly in midwestern water flood operations. The present paper recounts a series of 19 laboratory water floods using two long, consolidated cores of widely differing characteristics saturated with live crude and flooded with oil field brines in an effort to simulate field conditions under • various pressure gradients and flooding velocities. For both cores, higher recoveries and lower residual oil saturations were obtained at higher pressure gradients and flood velocities. N recent reports, Sully' and Beck and coworkers' I have advanced hypotheses concerning the formation of the phase. Both of these hypotheses are based on Pauling's theories of the electronic configuration of the elements of the first transition group. Sully considered that the number of electrons which can be absorbed in filling electron "holes" is the factor which determines whether or not the structure can form. Beck suggested that the presence of a certain concentration of electron "holes" is the controlling value. It can be shown that a similar criterion can be developed without making reference to Pauling's theories. Table I shows the elements of the first transition group and the incidence of the a structure in the binary systems of these elements according to the data presently available. Also appended is the number of electrons considered to exist in the 3d-4s levels of these elements. If the atomic percentages for the phase are listed as shown in Table 11, and if the number of electrons in the 3d-4s levels per atom is calculated for the a boundary values, the results are as shown in the last column. It can be seen that the numerical values are all in the vicinity of 7 electrons per atom. This is true also for the ternary Cr-Mo-Ni IT phase, which occurs in a system in which none of the binary compositions are known to develop the phase. In the Fe-Mo binary, the high temperature a phase, which occurs at a composition of 50 atomic pct of each element, also yields a ,;1 e of 7 electrons per atom. From inspection of Tables I and 11, it develops that any series of sequential numbers which is assigned to the elements under consideration will result in the numbers pertaining to a compositions grouping themselves around one specific number. It does not follow, however, that this random number necessarily has physical significance. Such a point has already been discussed by Hume-Rothery." One interesting point develops from this study, however, and that is the position of manganese with reference to the other elements and to the phase. In the system used here, the formation of phase is associated approximately with the value of 7 electrons per atom, which is also the number of electrons per atom that manganese has. Manganese, it will be recalled, exists in three different crystal forms, none of which are the usual, simpler metallic forms; on the other hand, elements just to the left of manganese (in Table I) generally have lower coordination-number structures (body-centered cubic) than do elements to the right of manganese (face-centered cubic). The contribution to a complex crystal structure by the interalloying of elements from opposite sides of manganese is significant in that the a phase is formed in binary systems including one element from each side of manganese, with manganese capable of participating with both sides. It is indeed an interesting coincidence that manganese, with 7 electrons per atom, solidifies in complex crystal forms, and that when alloys of the transition elements are made which have seven 3d-4s electrons per atom, they, too, tend to assume a complex crystal form. From the above, it might be deduced that the study of the a phase might be advanced by a critical examination of the element manganese and how its structure is affected by small additions of elements which change the 3d-4s electrons per atom number. This paper presents some preliminary results of two-dimensional cutting tests of dry limestone samples at utmospheric pressure. Cutting tips having rake angles of + 30°, + 15", 0°, - 15" and - 30" were used to make cuts on Leuders limestone samples at six depths of cut ranging from .005 to ,060 in. at cutting speeds of 15, 50, 109 and 150 ft/min. The vertical and horizontal force components on the cutting tips were recorded with an oscilloscope equipped with a polaroid camera. Motion pictures of the cutting process at camera speeds of 5,000 to 8,000 frames/sec were taken at strategic points in the variable ranges. The movies provide considerable insight into the brittle failure mechanism in rocks. It appears that chip-generating cracks usually have an initial orientation which is related to the resultant of the externally applied forces. The latter part of the crack curves upward toward the free surface being cut, this part being governed by some type of cantilever bending or prying. The linear and angular motion of the loosened chips also indicate the tensile nature of brittle failure. Analyses of the forces on the cutting tips indicate that: (I) relatively small increases in vertical loading result in large cut-depth increases for sharp tips (rake angles 2 0"); (2) tool forces increase at an increasing rate as the rake angle decreases, particularly for rake angles < 0"; and (3), for the range of this study, rate of loading had little effect on the maximum forces. Both the movies and visual inspection of the cuttings indicated that the volume of rock removed by chipping was much larger than that by any grinding mechanism, even for tips having negative rake angles. Cutting size increases with increased cut depth and rake angles, and decreases slightly at high cutting speeds, the depth of cut having by far the most influence. The amount of contact between the rock and the cutting tip was always less than the depth of cut and rarely exceeded 0.010 in. even for cuts of 0.060 in. INTRODUCTION The planing (or slicing) of various materials with a fixed blade has long been practiced by workers in many industries. For example, the farmer&apos;s plow, the carpenter&apos;s plane and the housewife&apos;s paring knife all employ this basic action. The casual observer might suspect that something so common must be quite simple; however, as in all problems involving the failure of materials, such is not the case. Industries concerned with the machining of metals have long studied these problems, and their literature on the subject is voluminous. Despite these efforts, basic knowledge is not very advanced, as may be noted from recent and comprehensive analyses of their literature.12 Metals are more subject to analysis by classical theories of elasticity and/or plasticity than are rocks, since their elastic constants and strengths are reasonably well established in many cases. In spite of this relative "simplicity", Hill9 refaces his discussion with an admission that the mathematical solution to the machining problem is not known. Photoelastic studies of both machining and milling have been performed and are discussed thoroughly by Coker and Filon.4 Rotary drilling of rocks with fixed blade or drag bits has long been practiced by the mining and petroleum industries, and considerable study has been given to defining their cutting action in terms of the pertinent variables. Essentially all the published mechanistic research on drag-bit drilling has been performed by mining engineers and has been concerned only with rocks in the brittle state. Fairhurst5-7 has worked extensively in this area and employed photographic techniques quite similar to those reported here, except at much lower speeds. His studies showed the periodic or cyclical nature of the brittle failure mechanism, in which instantaneous loads on the bit varied from some maximum value to near zero. Goodrichs has presented further data on the subject as well as a qualitative description of the process. Again the postulated mechanism is cyclical, with alternate chipping and grinding periods. The ploughing of coal is a practiced method and has been studied in some detail by English mining engineers."" Their findings have considerable general application to drag-bit drilling. Evans," in particular, has extended Merchant&apos;s metal-cutting theory" to brittle materials with some success, although certain aspects of his theory are open to question. Ferromanganese alloys react with aluminu-silica brick in blast furnace hearths and cause the formation of new phases with low refractoriness and consequent failure of the refractory lining. The nature of these reactions is explained on the basis of petrographic observations, thermodynamic data, and Phase equilibrium considerations. Animproued hearth design resulted from these findings. The production of ferromanganese in blast furnaces presents many problems which are not encountered in the production of iron in the same furnaces. One of the most serious of these problems is the rapid failure of refractories caused by their reaction with the ferromanganese metal. The present paper describes such a "hearth attack", its symptoms, causes, and cure. Following an introductory discussion of operating practice in ferromanganese blast furnaces, results are presented of a petrographic examination of samples from a furnace which had to be shut down because of refractory failure. The causes of this failure are then analyzed on the basis of petrographic observations combined with thermodynamic and phase equilibrium data available in the literature. The latter type of data were subsequently used as a guide in recommending improvements in hearth designs which have since proven themselves successful in practical operations. I) FERROMANGANESE BLAST FURNACE PRACTICE It is considered good practice to blow in a furnace on iron and operate it in this way for a period of time preliminary to producing ferrornanganese. During this time, iron generally penetrates the bottom refractories six or more feet below the original working surface of the hearth. Not only does this metal pervade the joints to these depths, but the pores of the refractories are usually also filled by molten iron. The high throughput of the iron furnace provides ample heat to maintain a high temperature in the hearth refractories. This, together with a high ferrostatic pressure, causes porous clay brick of the hearth to shrink. During subsequent use of such a furnace in ferromanganese production, the iron in the pores of hearth brick if; replaced to some extent by ferromanganese. The replacement is usually not complete. This is probably due to the lower metal throughput and lower prevailing temperatures resulting from this in the brick of the hearth bottom. When the ferrornanganese furnace is banked—or when the temperature in the furnace falls due to a furnace delay—-manganese oxidizes even though the atmosphere is largely CO. Considerable expansion accompanies this oxidation of manganese from metal to oxide. The hearth refractories are then subjected to the disintegrating forces of the volume expansion. These forces may in extreme cases be large enough to lift the furnace off its mantle supports as was described in a previous paper.&apos; When cooling takes place slowly, however, and the temperature remains at a fairly high level, the refractories undergo fluxing action by the MnO. This latter reaction and the reduction of SiO2 of the clay brick is the general subject of the present paper. The observations to be described herein were made on a ferromanganese furnace located at the Johnstown plant of Bethlehem Steel Co. The furnace was lined entirely with clay refractories and had operated on iron for 266 days and on ferromanganese for 96 days prior to being taken off because of a hearth wall failure. II) PETROGRAPHIC EXAMINATION AND CHEMICAL ANALYSIS The photograph reproduced in Fig. 1 shws a cross section of the upper part of an 18 by 9 by 4-1/2 in. bottom block removed from the blast furnace. This brick came from a depth of approximately 6 ft below the original working face of the bottom. It will be noted that the 4-1/2 in. dimension is almost the same as when the brick entered the furnace. Three characteristically different zones marked I, II, and III on the print of Fig. 1 are apparent. Results of chemical analyses of the original brick and samples from each of these zones are listed in Table I. Petrographically the various zones were characterized as follows: The central zone marked I was essentially un-reacted brick. The microstructure consisted of fine needles of mullite, and the pores in this entire area were filled with iron. This is characteristic of

Members of the Society of Mining Engineers may well regard it as rather unusual that a paper on this subject is being presented by someone whose first taste of mining came at the age of 60 or so - someone who last heard of cathodes and anodes in 1938. On the other hand, the title does refer to the financing of a mine and at least I can claim to have spent all my business life since the war until 1981 in the world of banking, though this inevitably means that I have been used to looking at these and other problems through what you might regard as the wrong end of the telescope. The lending of money, and more particularly the provision of finance for commerce and industry, is the central job of a banker and I have been involved in this in various ways over many years, but regrettably only very marginally in the world of mining. As you will see from what follows, the rather specialised form of finance which RTZ required was, to my regret, not provided by the British banking community since the great majority of the finance came from American banks and, to a lesser extent, from German banks. I am most indebted to Mr. Roy Wright for a great deal of the nuts and bolts in this paper. He was one of the three central figures in the growth and expansion of RTZ during the 1950&apos;s and 1960&apos;s and was right at the centre of the negotiations with bankers, with governments and with many others. The going, as you will see, was far from easy. The essential basis for the financing of each of the RTZ group&apos;s mining projects was a firm long-term sales contract for sufficient of the output of the particular mine to produce the cash flow necessary to service the loans. Wherever possible, loans were raised in the same currency as the sales contracts were made. Each sales contract was designed to give the customer the product he wanted with a long-term assurance of supply and at the same time to give the bankers the protection they required. Thus the marketing concept and the financing concept for a particular mine formed one overall plan, and talks with the customers and the bankers were conducted in parallel until a satisfactory marketing/financial package was agreed in principle. Preliminary talks were begun soon after the discovery of a potentially viable orebody. As confidence about a discovery increased, customers were persuaded to enter into contingent sales contracts before the very detailed and costly business of the economic and technical feasibility study of the mine was launched; such a study might cost 10% or more of the estimated total capital cost. At the same time provisional understandings were reached with the bankers. The contingent sales contracts usually gave a period of grace of eighteen months to two years, during which time the decision whether or not to continue with the mine had to be made. This decision rested mainly on the result of the feasibility study and also on coming to a firm agreement with the bankers. If all went well and the mine went ahead, then the contingent sales contracts became firm, but they fell away if the decision was negative. The Company was fortunate that during the whole period when its major mines were being developed, world trade was increasing rapidly and Japan was becoming a dominant industrial power. The Japanese supported many of the mines, including Hamersley Iron Ore, Lornex Copper, Bougainville Copper to name a few, with the basic long-term sales contracts that enabled their development. The Germans supported Palabora and to a lesser extent Bougainville. The mines were financed as individual projects generally with a loan/equity ratio of about 65/35, without legal recourse to RTZ for the loans. RTZ was, however, responsible for providing any capital overruns required to bring the mines into commercial operations. Nevertheless, the RTZ management regarded itself as morally responsible to the lenders because, Palabora aside, the sales contracts had either a fixed selling price (like Hamersley), an indexed price (like the Elliot Lake Uranium Mines and Mary Kathleen), or a floor price (as in Lornex, Bougainville and Rossing). Thus the Company believed that any financial failure would have been due to poor management or technical
