The subject of Egypt, to use the words of perhaps the second of modern writers on the subject [Deodat. de Dolomieu, in Observations sur la Physique, etc., January, 1793, vol. xlii., pp. 41+, 108+; Abbe Rozier, J. A. Mongez, and J. C. Delametherie, Paris], is one which strongly excites our interest, and everything relating to it demands our respect. "Thus," he continues, "the Greeks appeared to the Romans," ..." thus Egypt appeared to the Greeks, and thus all three appear to us." This writer, in the three parts of the memoire given above, speaks of Norden as the modern pioneer of Egypt, and does not seem to have made original observations himself; nevertheless he seems to have rendered the same service to his authority that Playfair not very long afterward rendered Hutton. The limitations of a paper will permit little else than citations, but these are so numerous that, unless much compressed, they would supply a chapter of moderate size. TUESDAY afternoon the annual meeting was devoted to a general session, in the auditorium, on production control. George Otis Smith presided and in opening the meeting recalled that the session in 1920 on the stabilization of the coal industry was the first time this subject had been discussed by Institute members in a general session and then introduced Carl Snyder, of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, who spoke on "Long-time Growth and the Factors In Its Variations." He spoke without notes and a full presentation of his views must be deferred until the stenographer's report is available. He said that of the total production some 80 to 90 per cent represents goods for consumption and the other 20 to 10 per cent for construction. He discussed various indices of production, concluding that bank clearings are the best, and showed by charts that when they are plotted, allowing for various disturbing factors, they are seen to increase quite regularly at the rate of about 4 per cent per year. The production curve rises at only 3y2 per cent per year, because agricultural production does not in- crease as fast as manufacturing postal revenues in- crease at the rate of 5 per cent per year while the use of electricity increases twice as fast.

A brief elemental discussion of the fundamental factors involved in diamond drilling often fills a need, particularly when a mine operator is contemplating for the first time an exploratory drilling campaign. Mr. James A. Barr, of the Mining Methods Committee of the Institute, has suggested that many engineers must undertake a drilling program of one kid or another and, in the case of diamond drilling, sometimes even are at a loss as to how to start correspondence. The Bureau of Mines has acquired much experience in managing exploratory diamond-drilling activities. Its activities in diamond drilling included exploring for potash in Texas, Utah and New Mexico1-' during the 1920's. The Strategic Minerals Exploration program was started in 1939 and was materially expanded during the war to include critical and essential minerals. At the peak of its war-time activity more than 200 engineers were employed, a majority of whom supervised diamond drilling. Many of them had little experience with such work prior to their employment with the Bureau, and it was necessary to instruct them in their duties. The purpose of this paper, therefore, is to present the fundamentals of exploratory diamond drilling from the viewpoint of management in such a way that they will Serve as a basis on which those beginning exploratory diamond drilling may build an experience and acquire ability to direct exploration as they gain that experience. Selection of Method of Drilling Selection of the method of drilling is governed by the type of material to be penetrated and by the type of sample needed to determine the quality and importance of a deposit. Types of drills that might be used for a given job include diamond drills, churn drills, hand auger drills, power auger drills, bucket drills, and rotary drills (sometimes called "seismograph rigs"). Each type has a specific field in which it is most useful. While the Bureau of Mines utilized all the types of drilling mentioned, diamond drilling was used on a majority of its exploratory projects. Factors Governing Selection of Diamond Drilling The prime consideration in selecting a method of drilling is first to determine what results are desired and then to choose a method that will furnish reliable data in the ground to be penetrated. Use of diamond drills permits recovery of a core as well as sludge at a comparatively low cost. Although the phenomenon of season cracking is still imperfectly understood, there seems to be ample evidence that season cracks are propagated by the combined action of corrosion and a stress of either internal (residual) origin or external origin. The factors that influence season cracking may therefore be grouped according to corrosive media, nature of stress, and character of the material. Thus the important mass of evidence pointing to ammonia as the most frequently active corroding agent causing season - - cracking of brass has naturally led to the development of laboratory tests of a moderately accelerated character based upon ammonia together with auxiliary agents such as air, water vapor, and carbon dioxide as the corroding agent. Similarly, the knowledge that stress must be present has led to the use of externally applied and therefore accurately measurable stresses in laboratory testing. A companion paper(^)^ to the present one discusses the development of these test methods in our laboratories. The present paper discusses data bearing on factors concerning the nature of stress such as its magnitude and direction of application. The various methods based on solution models for obtaining free energies of mixing from miscibility-gap data have been applied to a number of binary-alloy systems. For nine of these systems there exist experimental thermodynamic data that permit a comparison of the results to experiment. It was found that the method of van der Toorn and Tiedema almost invariably leads to results that are physically unacceptable and that vary drastically with small changes in the miscibility-gap parameters. The subregular solution model is found in all cases, except the Al-Zn, Fe-Cr, and Cu-Pb systems, to exaggerate the free energy of mixing by 30 pct or more. The model developed by Lumsden is found to give results that are often in excellent agreement with experiment and which exaggerate the free energy of mixing by no more than 30 pct. These results and others give evidence that the Lumsden treatment of the effect of unequal atomic sizes and of imperfect configurational randomness due to deviations of AB bond energies from the mean of AA and BB bond energies is adequate for most systems. ANALYTIC expressions are frequently proposed for the dependence on composition of the activities of the components of a solution. Because the development of solution theory is incomplete, these expressions contain parameters which must be determined by experiment. The measurement of activities is often difficult and consequently such measurements are less readily available than are measurements of phase equilibria which, under certain conditions, can also be used to evaluate these parameters. For example, suppose it is known that two structurally dissimilar phases, each of known composition, in an n-com-ponent system are at equilibrium at a given temperature and pressure. n equations can be set up in terms of these parameters expressing the equality of the chemical potential of each component in the two phases. In addition, one can write the Gibbs-Duhem equation for each phase that also contains these parameters. Thus, if these n + 2 equations contain n + 2 parameters, these parameters can be determined (at the temperature in question) from the phase diagram alone. If the average number of parameters in each expression for the activity of a given component in a given phase is V then there will be 2nV parameters involved. Equating 2nV to n + 2 shows that, for n + 2, V = 1. If the temperature dependence of each parameter were to be expressed in some explicit form one could use equilibrium conditions at a number of temperatures to increase V. The situation is much improved when the two phases in equilibrium are structurally similar. It can then be assumed that, stably or metastably, two phases will become one at higher temperatures. Thus the number of parameters involved becomes nV instead of 2nV. Hence, V = 2 for n = 2 using only one temperature. (It is implied here that the activity expressions used are valid over the entire composition range.) In this investigation only the equilibrium of two structurally similar, two-component phases (miscibility-gap systems) will be considered. The various proposed solution models will be applied to a number of these systems and the results compared with available experimental results. All of the analytic expressions that have been proposed for the free energy of mixing of a two-component system are of the form where ?Gmix is the free energy of mixing per mole of solution, N1 and N2 are the mole fractions of components 1 and 2, respectively, and f(Ni, T) is some function of composition and temperature. In the "ideal" solution model f = 0. In the "regular" solution model f = a constant. Since these two models permit only a symmetric equilibrium diagram they will not be considered further here. The simplest model that permits a nonsymmetric miscibility envelope is the so-called "subregular" solution model proposed by Hardy.1 This model gives where the Ci(T) are functions of temperature only. The same expression for f is obtained from the "linear a function" model proposed by Darken and Gurry2 and applied to miscibility-gap systems by Wriedt.3 This model requires that the a function defined by be a linear function of composition (yi is the activity coefficient of component i). This model is not purely hypothetical for it has been found2 to hold true for a number of systems. It is readily shown3 that the f(Nl, T) obtained from this model is of the form given in Eq. [2]. It will be noted that the subregular solution model contains only two parameters and hence both of them can be determined at any desired temperature below the critical temperature, Tc, for a miscibility-gap systems in the manner described previously. Despite recent economic problems, the future of the Florida phosphate industry appears optimistic. Florida has enormous reserves and will continue to produce a third of the world's phosphate supply simply by making changes in the present system of mining, beneficiation, waste disposal, and land reclamation. The geology and mineralogy of future deposits are discussed with reference to specific deposits. Lower ore grades, increasing power costs, and environmental regulations are necessitating development of new concepts of mining and matrix transportation. Because one of the ores to be mined in the future contains appreciable amounts of dolomite, research and development efforts are being concentrated on new techniques in beneficiation. Changes are being made in plant design to meet environmental and regulation standards. However, the expected new technology outlined for the industry depends on the geology and mineralogy of future reserves.

The regular activities of the Insti¬tute are financed mainly by income derived from members' dues, from advertising in MINING AND METALLURGY, and from the sale of publications to the public. In addition, collateral activities and special projects are financed each year by means of income from endowed funds controlled and administered by the Institute. In the aggregate, the principal sums of these endowments amount to more than $560,000. An active effort is being made to in¬crease the endowment funds of the Institute through a standing committee, of which H. T. Hamilton is chairman; Paul D. Merica, vice-chairman, and of which the other members are: W. H. Aldridge, George D. Barron, Cleveland E. Dodge, John V. M. Dorr, Howard N. Eavenson, D. C. Jackling, Henry Krumb John M. Lovejoy, Harvey D. Mudd and J. V. W. Reynders. This committee feels that there exists a tremendous opportunity for the Institute to be of ever-growing service to the public, to the mineral industries, and to the profession. It welcomes suggestions as to names of men of means who are vitally interested in the mineral industries, and to whom the opportunity to make a contribution or bequest might appeal favorably if presented in the proper light by the committee.

RECENT years have seen important practical advances in the construction of recording instruments for use with thermocouples. The difficulties of the problem will be appreciated when it is remembered that a 10° F. change in temperature of a base-metal couple at 1500° means a change in the electromotive force of about 0.00035 volt. In a circuit having a resistance of 350 ohms, this means a change in the current of 0.00000,1 amp.; and despite this requirement of great sensitivity the instruments must be sufficiently robust to withstand the rough usage which is so often their lot. Two methods are in common use for the measurement of the electromotive force produced by a thermocouple: 1. The milliammeter method, in which the current produced by the thermocouple in a circuit of known resistance is measured and from. this the electromotive force is deduced by Ohm's law. 2. The potentiometer method in which a known potential difference is opposed to the thermocouple electromotive force. The use of thermocouple and milliammeter for measuring temperature introduces some possible sources of error, for the reading depends on a number of factors, including the following: (1) Electromotive force set up at the hot junction, (2) electromotive force set up at the cold junction, (3) resistance of the circuit including thermocouple, lead wires, and meter, (4) field strength of magnets, (5) strength of controlling springs in meter, (6) friction at pivots, of pointer on paper, etc. It is obviously necessary to so design and maintain the installation that the reading is independent of all the factors except the first. The electromotive force set up at the cold junction can easily be taken care of provided it is constant. This has been approximately accomplished by burying the cold junction in the ground or actually secured by locating it in a container, the temperature of which is kept constant by means of a thermostat.

Recent studies of inelastic behavior and acoustic emission in geologic materials further validate the concept that such materials may be considered to consist of an elastic media containing an array of pores and cracks. In the present paper this concept is investigated further by experiments in which the mechanical behavior of a number of geologic materials were studied in detail at low stress levels using ultrasonic pulse methods. Experiments were carried out on cylindrical test specimens of Indiana Limestone, Tennessee Sand- stone and Barre Granite under relatively low confining pressures (0-5000 psi). Analysis of data from these experiments indicated that there existed a low-level critical stress at which there appeared to be a transition in the mechanical behavior of the material. Under triaxial stress, results indicated that the differential critical stress was relatively independent of confining pressure, i.e., the mechanism responsible for the transition in mechanical behavior was governed by a maximum shear stress criteria.

An improved general rate equation for a one-ditnensional gas-solid system has been derived. Fov the veversihle interfacial chemical reaction, there are concentrations of gaseous reactant and product at the reacting zone to be considered. They have been calculated with the velations fuvnished by the constraints on the system, namely, quasi-steady state and equimolal counterdiffusion of the gases. The results of the diffusiori study of Evans, Watson, and ,Mason based on the "dusty gas" model have been applied here. The interfacial chemical reaction is taken as first-order with respect to the concentration of the gases involved. The equation has proper dependence on gas composition and on solid structure through the relative values of Knudsen and normal diffusivities. The existence of the total pressure gradient inside the specimen has been predicted and confirmed experimentally. In a previous communication' we introduced a general rate equation for gas-solid reactions by considering the contributions of chemical reaction at inter- phase boundaries and diffusion through the solid product layer simultaneously. These equations, for one-dimensional and spherical specimens, take care of the whole range continuously from purely diffusion control to purely chemical reaction control. In this paper we study only the one-dimensional system. The corresponding rate equation is reproduced here: Of the two terms on the right-hand side of Eq. [I], the first represents the contribution of interfacial chemical reaction and the second that of gaseous diffusion. The shortcomings of Eq. [I] are that in its derivation the interfacial chemical reaction was assumed to be irreversible and the diffusion rate of gaseous product was not considered. Any pressure effects building up within the porous media were also neglected. Evidently. these simplifying assumptions will limit the general applicability of these equations. The rate of reduction of iron oxide by hydrogen, for instance, is very sensitive to the concentration of water vapor in the main gas stream, as has been reported by cewan' and by Quets et a1.3 Furthermore, the gaseous phase at the reacting interface will contain an appreciable amount of the gaseous product of reaction. If this were not true, a sufficiently high concentration gradient for the outward diffusion of the gaseous product could not be maintained. With these shortcomings in mind, Eq. The problem of heat treating high-speed steel becomes more and more important as the design of cutters becomes more and more complicated in increasing the efficiency of mechanical operatioqs. Hundreds of dollars are spent in the design and manufacture of milling cutters of special form for rapid production of duplicate or interchangeable parts, and then, as the heat treatment is faulty on the one hand, or scientifically executed on the other, the tool fails after a few operations, or its efficiency is greatly increased. The practical operation of giving these complicated tools the right temperature necessary to bring out the best cutting qualities, and at the same time bring-the tool out "clean," is a difficult one and calls for no small amount of skill. In order to be on the safe side the average tool hardener uses a temperature much too low to give the best results with the high-speed steel he uses. In the case of cutters which are finished to a given diameter before hardening, it is impossible to grind the tool after hardening, so that it is essential that the surface be protected from oxidizing or de-carbonizing. It is the aim of this paper to describe some experiments on hardening high-speed stee1, in which metallographic means were used to determine the correct hardening tempcratures. The accompanying table and plates show the results of hardening experiments on five different high-speed steels. OF what use is the federation to me and why should I support it?" is a question that has been asked by many members of the constituent societies of the F. A. E. S. during the last year; a question that is asked because the speakers do not realize what the Federated is doing or what is the field of its activities. "What is it doing for the profession and for mankind?" would be a more appropriate question, the answer to which is found in the closing chapter of Prof. Cassius J. Keyser's "Mathematical Philosophy."' The chapter is entitled "Science and Engineering." Professor Keyser writes from the layman's point of view. He is looking at the profession and at engineers from the outside. We have in his thoughts the oppor-tunity that Burns sought when he wrote "Oh wad some power the giftie gie us to see oursels as ithers see us." With the permission of the author and the publisher, we quote the following paragraphs: A layman, viewing a profession from the outside, seeking thus to ascertain its proper relations to the common weal, may bring to the task a certain freedom, which, were he a member of the profession, he might have lost. "Men trained in a profession," said Prof. David Swing, "come by degrees into the profession's channel, and flow only in one direction, and always between the same banks. The master of a learned profession at last becomes its slave. He who follows faithfully any calling wears at last a soul of that call-ing's shape. You remember the death scene of the poor old schoolmaster. He had assembled the boys and girls in the winter mornings and had dismissed them winter evenings after sundown, and had done this for fifty long years. One winter morning he did not appear. Death had struck his old and feeble pulse; but, dying, his mind followed its beautiful but narrow river-bed, and his last words were: It is growing dark-the school is dismissed-let the .girls pass out first."' I shall not be so much concerned with the present status of the science as with its potency and promise. Of individual engineers the ideals may be high or low, worthy or unworthy; but of engineering itself the ideal is great and mighty. It is of that ideal that I intend to speak.

The methods about to be described have been tested in practice, and are believed to be specially adapted to such extended topographical surveys as mining engineers in particular are sometimes called upon to execute. The assistance of Mr. H. 0. Flipper in the preparation of this paper, and his practical authorship of the second part, is hereby acknowledged. I. Photographic SuRveying. The writer was recently employed; together with Mr. H. O. Flipper, to survey the properties of the Plata-Reina de Sonora Mining and Milling Company, situated in the mining district of Las Planchas, District of Magdalena, State of Sonora, Mexico. These properties, now owned by an American corporation, of which M. W. Evans, of New Orleans, is president, and Richard A. Pomeroy is resident superintendent, are famous in the history of Mexican mining, as the place where planchus, or bolas de plata were foulld about the beginning of the last century. Ward, the English CILargh d7Affaires in Mexico from 1826 to 1828, writing at that epoch, says: "The idea [that the ores in the north of Mexico were richer than those in the south] probably originated in the discovery of the famous bolas de plata [balls of silver] of Arizona [Planchas de Plata de Arizona, a stock-ranch in northern Mexico], in the beginning of the last century, which was, and probably still is, believed in Europe to be one of those fables with which mining countries always abonnd. But the attention of the present government of Mexico having been drawn to the subject, a search was made in the viceregal archives, by order of the president, for the correspondence which was known to have taken place respecting it in the year 1736. This correspondence I have seen, and I have in my possession a certified copy of a decree of Philip the Fifth, dated Aranjuez, 28th May, 1741, the ohject of which was to terminate a prosecution, instituted by the Royal Fiscal, against the discoverers of Arizona, for having defrauded the treasnry of the duties payable upon the masses of pore silver found there. The decree states the weight of the balls, sheets and other pieces of silver discovered (bolas, planchas, y otras piezas de plata), to have amounted to 165 arroba, 8 pounds, in all, 4133 pounds; and mentions particularly one mass of pure silver, which weighed 108 arrobas (2700

Discussion of the paper of HOWARD N. EAVENSON, presented at the New York meeting, February, 1915, and printed in Bulletin No. 98, February, 1915, pp. 413 to 430. WILLIAM H. GRADY, Bluefield, W. Va.-Mr. Eavenson gave a comparison between accidents in the State of West Virginia and in the Pocahontas field. The figures quoted are, I presume, taken from the reports of the State Mine Inspector. There are no statistics available, in readily accessible form, giving a comparison between the Pocahontas field and the mines of the United States Coal & Coke Co. which are a part of the field. It occurs to me that the paper would be more complete with these data and I will say that the mines of the Pocahontas field produced during the year 1913 about 15,000,000 tons, about 3,000,000 tons of which was produced by the United States Coal &Coke Co. This gives an indication of the extent of its operations. The Pocahontas field lies largely in the counties of McDowell, Mercer, and Wyoming in West Virginia, and Tazewell in Virginia.: Without consulting maps, I should say that all of the acreage under operation at present by this company lies wholly in McDowell County and that the average conditions off roof top and bottom in its mines are the average of the county, but that the worst conditions in some of these mines are the worst to be found in the county. The average conditions in Tazewell County are about the same as in McDowell County, except that the average thickness of the seam is much greater. The average conditions of top and roof and bottom are better in Mercer and Wyoming counties than in the mines of the United States Coal &. Coke Co.; the worst conditions in these counties are not so bad as in McDowell and Tazewell counties and the best are better than those encountered in McDowell and Tazewell counties; also the thickness of seam is less in Mercer and Wyoming counties. Automatic controls have long been a fact of technological life. Some understanding of control systems is rapidly becoming essential to the competence of mineral engineers. Students in undergraduate mineral engineering curricula, however, should not be expected to develop proficiency in the design and interpretation of control systems. They should be provided the opportunity to absorb some of the fundamental concepts and cant of such highly specialized peripheral fields as automatic controls. The present paper describes the components of a simple, flexible and relatively inexpensive control system designed primarily for the use of students in independent study projects. The control system is based on a continuous on-stream optical analyzer analogous to commercially available systems using X-Ray fluorescence analysis. The components can be easily adapted to control other separators and separations. As described here, they have been arranged to control the magnetic separation of a magnetite bearing specular hematite from quartz to produce a quartz product of fixed hematite content using a minimum of power. The control system consists of the magnetic separator* with a vibrating feeder, † a sampler, an optical scanner, a differential amplifier, a millivolt recorder ‡ and a motor driven, metered variable DC power supply for the separator electromagnet. An optional magnet current recorder is useful. The system as arranged for closed loop control is illustrated in Fig. 1. The elements of the loop are identified in automatic control jargon in Table I. SO commonplace that they are seldom noticed, mining-machinr, bits have a definite and important bearing on the cost of coal production. At the average mine many thousands of bits are used during the year. The actual cost represented by the purchase of the bits used, as well as that of sharpening and handling them, represents a considerable sum of money. From the point of view of indirect costs they are important, as the lack of good bits at a mining machine can seriously impair production. Good bits tend to ensure an adequate supply of coal. Classes OF Bits Mining-machine bits may be divided into three general classes, based on shape and method of use: (I) chisel, (2) pick-point and (3) one-use. The chisel and pick-point bits are shown in Fig. I. The so-called "chisel" bits were made of steel of various sizes and were sharpened to a wide chisel cutting edge. Few of this type of bit are used, except in places where coring is very bad. Sometimes chisel bits are used with standard bits to help cut out the core. The "pick-point" bit is widely used today. Normally it is made from ½ by I-in. steel, is about 4½ in. long when new, has a rake angle of about 25°, a front clearance of about 23O, a side clearance of approximsteji 8".' There are many variations in the shape of this bit, depending on the ideas of the individual that may be dressing the dies of the bit machine. This bit has been generally used for many years and at present, in one form or another, is by far the most popular bit used in coal mines. This bit usually is made from 0.85 carbon steel, although in recent years some alloy-steel bits have made their appearance. At present, carbon-steel bits are frequently tipped in. hard facing materials. A third class of bits might be called the L'one-use" bit; that is, a small bit that is used once and then thrown away. These bits have two or three points, are usually made from 0.85 carbon steel and sometimes from higher alloys. Recently some. of them have been tipped with hard facing material. AS a means for increasing the efficiency in modern blast-furnaces by supplying to them blast of a much higher temperature than is now possible, the writer offers as a suggestion a modification in the construction of regenerative hot-blast stoves. Stated briefly, the plan proposed is to pre-heat both the gas and the air for its combustion in a manner similar to that generally adopted in Siemens openhearth furnaces. After thus carrying the temperature of the stove to a point much higher than that common in hot-hlast stoves, the cold blast passes through it. Without entering into the details relating to the reversing valves and the system of flues, the general plan may be outlined as follows, referring to the accompanying drawings: The valves are so placed in heating up the stove that the blast-furnace gas enters at B, Fig. 1, and the cold air for combustion at A. Ascending in flues, F and E, respectively, combustible gas and air meet and mix in the combustion-chamber, I. Flowing through K, they descend through the flues, G and H, escaping through the chimney. In this manner the walls of the combustion. chambers, I and L, are highly heated, and the right-hand side of the stove is carried to a higher temperature. By reversing the valves, blast-furnace gas enters at C and cold air for combustion at D. Both are pre-heated in their ascent through the flues, G and H. They burn in the combustion-chamber, L, and the hot gases of combustion, flowing through K, I, E and F to A and B, heat the left-hand side of the stove. In this manner the stove is carried to a temperature greater than that of those now generally in use, in which air and gas are burned without preliminary pre-heating. In the plan proposed, that side of the stove will, of course, be relatively cooler through which cold air and furnace-gas last passed in its ascent to its combustion-chamber. After having sufficiently heated the stove in the manner outlined, the cold blast is admitted through all the flues, A, B, C and D. The following specifications, proposed by a sub-committee of the American Society for Testing Materials, are still to be adopted and subsequently submitted to the International Association for Testing Materials. Standard Specifications for Pig-Iron and Castings. I. Analysis.—It is recommended that all purchases be made by analysis. II. Sampling.—In contracts where pig-iron is sold by chemical analysis, each carload, or its equivalent, shall be considered as a unit. At least one pig shall be selected at random from each two tons of every carload, and so as to fairly represent it. Drillings shall be taken so as to fairly represent the fracture surface of each pig, and the sample analyzed shall consist of an equal quantity of drillings from each pig, well mixed and ground before analysis. III. Allowances and Penalties.—III all contracts, in the absence of a definite understanding to the contrary, a variation of 10 per cent. of silicon, either way, and of .01 in sulphur above the standard is allowed. A deficiency of over 10 per cent. in the silicon, up to 20 per cent., and a further increase in sulphur up to .01 over the above allowance subjects the shipment to a penalty of 1 per cent. in the price for each element so affected. IV. Base Analysis OF Grades. —In the absence of specifications the following numbers, known to the trade, shall represent the appended analyses for standard grades of foundry pig-iron, irrespective of the fracture, and subject to allowances and penalties as above. Description of Pipes.—The pipes shall be made with hub- and spigot-joints, and shall accurately conform to the dimensions given in Tables Nos. I. and 11. They shall be straight and shall be true circles in section, with their inner and outer surfaces concentric, and shall be of the specified dimeneions in outside diameter. They shall be at least 12 feet in length, exclusive of socket. For pipes of each size from 4-inch to 24-inch, inclusive, there shall be two standards of outside diameter, and for pipes from 30-inch to 60-inch, inclusive, there shall be four standards of outside diameter, as shown by Table No. 11.
