BLAST-FURNACE blowing engines are broadly of two main types: either steam- or gas-driven reciprocating engines, or turbine-driven rotary engines. Some results of experience with a furnace blown by an engine of the latter type may be of sufficient general interest to relate. The first engine of this type was installed at Oxford Furnace, New Jersey, before the writer's connection with this plant, in March, 1910. This furnace uses chiefly New Jersey magnetites and had been in blast seven months on its old engines when the turbo blower was started. It was 80 ft. high by 17 ft. 6 in. bosh and 11 ft. hearth diameter. It is of interest to see from the records what happened when the turbo engine was put to work. But of course, as the old blowing equipment was rather antiquated, consisting of two I. P. Morris engines with air cylinders 72 by 72 in., in good running order, however, it is evident that the comparison between their work and that of the turbo blower cannot be interpreted as being between machines that were respectively of equal excellence as representatives of their types. Still the results were gratifying and -interesting. The records show that, with the old engines blowing 13,630 cu. ft: of air per minute, measured by piston displacement, the furnace was working up about 480 tons of stock per 24 hr. and producing an average of 132 tons per day and a maximum of 166 tons. The rotary blowing engine installed was a General Electric Co. machine, the driving end being a Curtis steam turbine and the air end a six-stage rotary compressor, all running at about 1,500 to 1,600 rev. per minute, and having a capacity of 25,000 cu. ft. of air per minute up to 25 lb. pressure, and equipped with an automatic constant-volume variable-speed governor. After running this blower, for a period equal to that covered above by the old engines, at an average rate of 15,000 cu. ft. of air per minute, the furnace worked up an average of about 592 tons of material and produced an average of 170 tons per day. Thus, on an apparent increase of 10 per cent. in the air volume there was an increase of about 23.5 per cent. in the materials worked up and of about 28.8 per cent. in the product. During the last decade many conditions have been encountered that have materially increased the cost of the production of coal. As in most cases it has not been practicable to increase the selling price of such coal sufficiently to insure the necessary margin of profit, the mine management has been forced to avail itself of what might be termed unusual means that costs might be held at as low a figure as possible. The so-called efficiency engineer has been called upon, costly power plants have been built and machinery has been installed to replace manual labor wherever possible. Another aid used recently to secure economies through the more intelligent production of coal, is the chemist. As the coal industry, barring the production of byproduct coke, does not at once give evidence of its need of the services of the chemist, the writer will endeavor to point out a few of the services that this branch of the staff has been able to render. The preparation of coal in the past has been carried on entirely upon an empirical basis, that is, the criterion adopted has been an ocular inspection. Unfortunately, the appearance of a coal and especially of an anthracite, has but little relation to its fuel value, and as long as coal is purchased for the heat that can be obtained from it by its combustion, the quantity of such heat that is purchased must be one of the principal desiderata in selecting or preparing a coal. Were coals purchased for use as bric-a-brac or for exhibition in museums it might be both wise and just to purchase them upon their appearance. After 4 or 5 years of investigation the fact has been established that coals of very inferior appearance, and I now have special reference to anthracite, might and often did possess heating and burning properties superior to those possessed by bright coals which in the past had commanded considerable and uniform premiums in the market. This being the case the question arose as to whether the trade could be convinced of this fact. While at first some difficulty was experienced in establishing the quality of such dull coals, still it was found that the real obstacle to the sale of these materials in the past had been the fact that the coal producers' own sales departments felt convinced of the inferiority of this type of fuel and when complaints were registered they were given ready credence. "The Rockets' Red Glare" of the Fourth of July is produced by strontium compounds. However, strontium has a number of less spectacular uses; i.e. in, or in connection with, the manufacture of ceramics, caustic soda, glass, railway and truck signal flares, beet sugar and steel. The principal ore of strontium for use both as the mineral and for production of compounds is celestite (SrSO4). This mineral varies in color from white to pink or blue depending on presence of impurities. It has a hardness of about 3.5 and specific gravity of 3.9. It is brittle and has perfect basal and prismatic cleavages. The high grade ore is obtained from England, hence it has become the standard for all other producing areas. (See analyses, Table 1.) The most objectionable impurity in English celestite is iron, coming mostly from adhering clay. On the other hand, Mexican celestite, while no higher in strontium sulfate content, is extremely low in iron (less than 0.2 pct), hence it is more desirable for certain uses. Most of the celestite in Spain and in the United States is high in calcium and barium, and commonly high in iron, and requires some form of beneficiation in order to be equal to English ore. The natural carbonate (SrCO3), or strontianite, is less important than celestite as a source of strontium, because it is less abundant and is not so widespread in its occurrence. Furthermore, it generally occurs with calcite (CaCO3) and lead sulfide (PbS), and for most uses these impurities are detrimental. This mineral is generally white or yellowish, forming needle-like crystals. It has a hardness of about 3.7 and a specific gravity of 3.68-3.8. The mineral is brittle and has an imperfect cleavage. A typical analysis of German strontianite is shown in Table 1. [ ] Distribution of Deposits UNITED STATES Occurrences of strontium minerals are known in Arkansas, Arizona, California, Illinois, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas, and Washington. Celestite occurs in the Vulture Mountains, Maricopa County, Arizona in beds three to ten feet thick associated with sandstone, gypsum, and barite. Because of the low strontium content, approximately 86 pct SrSO4, it has no commercial value. A large deposit of celestite occurs in San Bernardino County, California, in the Cady Mountains near Argus Station, about eight miles west of Ludlow. The celestite here is interbedded with shaly and clayey tuff in a zone about 300 ft thick. Massive, finely crystalline ore has been recovered with an analysis

KNELLER' has recently reported that extensive metastable solid solutions may be obtained in Cu-Fe alloys by simultaneous vapor deposition. This note reports that solid solutions, apparently single -phase, can be obtained for Cu-Fe alloys containing 0 to 20 and 85 to 100 at. pct Fe by rapid quenching from the melt; the inability to extend the solid solubilities further is related to the liquid miscibility gap, Fig. 1, as for Cu-Co alloys.2'3 Accurate lattice spacings of the copper-rich fcc and iron-rich bcc solid solutions have been obtained. Homogeneous alloys were prepared by casting4'5 and sintering2 from elements of 99.9+ pct purity. The quenching techniques were as before,' except the iron-rich alloys were liberally covered with argon while at elevated temperatures. Flakes about 1 sq mm in area were obtained and investigated with the Debye-Scherrer technique, as previously described.2,4 All X-ray work was done at 25° 2°C using filtered copper and cobalt K radiation. Relative visual intensities of the diffraction lines for the phases in the quenched alloys are shown in Table I. The lattice spacings of the fcc structure for alloys containing up to 80 at. pct Fe are plotted in Fig. 2. The variation of these lattice parameters with composition is in good agreement with the re- of cementite spots usually present (all hkl reflections are allowed) and the ease of confusing them with ferrite or martensite reflections. This discrepancy may be due to the different temperatures at which the X-ray measurements were carried out and perhaps to the different extrapolation procedures. Also, Andersen and Kingsbury6 state that their lattice spacings were computed relative to the wavelengths given by Siegbahn in 1933; this reference has not been found and it is assumed that the well-known 1931 wavelengths were used, the lattice spacings then being in kx units which are converted into angstroms by the factor 1.00202. Electrical model studies have been made of the effect of unsymmetrical vertical fractures on production cnpacity. The study war restricted to the case of two vertical fractures originating at the well and extending out into the reservoir for various distances and orientations. The ratio of the short fracture length to the long fracture length was varied from 0.1 to 1.0 in successive studies. The angle separating the two fractures was varied from 0 to 180 degrees. The most effective fractured patterns were obtained when the fractures were oriented 180 degrees. It was found that when the total fracture length was equal to 0.2 of the drainage radius, the increase in production capacity may vary from approximately 1.55 to 1.95. depending upon the ratio of the short fracture length to the long fracture length and the angle separating the two fractures. If the total fracture length were 0.5 of the drainape- radius. poroduction cavacitv., increases varving 1.95 to 2.65 were observed, depending on the angle between the fractures and the ratio of the .short fracture length to the long fracture length. The fractured well production capacity decreased aPproxin?ately I to 10 per cent as the angle separating the fractures was varied from 180 to 90 degrees. It was dependent on the particular fracture. The commercial application of reservoir fracturing techniques has caused an interest to be expressed in the effect of vertical and horizontal fractures on production capacities. Some data have indicated that substantially vertical fractures may be created in some reservoirs. It is believed that the fractures are possibly unsymmetrical, that is, one fracture may extend due north 100 ft and a second fracture on the opposite side of the well may extend south or southeast only 50 ft. The total fracture length, ratios of the lengths and angles of separation may vary considerably. For this reason variations in these factors were considered. The study was restricted to the case of two vertical fractures originating at the well and extending out into the reservoir. It is not known that such will occur in a reservoir, but the results may be of value in interpreting or studying fracturing applications. PROCEDURE An electrical model was used in this study of the effect of unsymmetrical vertical fractures on production capacity, A wooden tank 30 in. in diameter and approximately 2 in deep was coated with paraffin wax. DEFINITIONS The ores of iron are classified in three general categories: direct shipping, concentrates, and agglomerated-i.e., pelletized or sintered. Direct Shipping As the name implies, direct-shipping ores are shipped as mined or, perhaps, after screening. Generally, direct-shipping ores are hematitic (R203), magnetitic (R304), or limonitic (2Fe2O3.3H20) in nature. Grades of direct-shipping ores vary widely. Prices are frequently related to the historical Mesabi standard of 51.5% iron, although certain premium lump ores may contain up to 68% iron. The use of direct-shipping ores is diminishing as the advantages of beneficiated ores become evident and reserves are depleted. Concentrates Where the nature of the deposit and economics allows, certain ores are upgraded. This may include no more than washing and screening, or may be as elaborate as fine grinding followed by magnetic, gravity, or even flotation procedures for separation. Coarser concentrates may be smelted "as is.'; Fine concentrates usually are sold as sinter feed. (Sinter, as used here and in the following, refers to a process by which a fine ore-carbon mixture is agglomerated at elevated temperatures on a direct-fired moving grate to eliminate fines and improve chemical and physical homogeneity.) Agglomerates-Pellets or Sinter The development of economic techniques of mining and concentrating taconite (fine-grained, ferruginous jasperoids) led to the introduction of the iron-ore pellet, which is now becoming the major form in which iron is introduced into the furnace. The tremendous reserves of magnetic taconites of the northern United States and Canadian Precambrian shield had been recognized for many years. A century of mining has seen the reserves of the direct-shipping or "red ores" of the Minnesota, Michigan, and Wisconsin ranges approach depletion. Research started in the 1930s has seen the evolution of motives and techniques to concentrate these stubborn refractory ores. The efficacy of concentrate pellets in iron-making has been such as to induce mines throughout the world to grind, concentrate, and pelletize otherwise shipping-grade ores. Table 14.1A.1 shows typical analyses of iron ore. Marketing-Prices of iron may be quoted on a value per long-ton (2240 lbs) or metric-ton (1000 kg or 2204 lb) basis, or on a value per long-ton-unit or metric-ton-unit basis. Experimental results are given for the rate of oxidation of ferrous iron to ferric iron in pure molten iron oxide by carbon dioxide + carbon moloxide mixtures at 1550°C. It is shown that the rate-controlling process is the interdiffusion of iron and oxygen atoms within the melt. The inter-diffusivity of iron and oxygen in the melt is obtained from the results and the value of (5.0 * 1.0) x 10-5sq cm per sec is recommended for the temperature of 1550°C. Similarly, it is also found that the rate of reduction of molten iron oxide is con -trolled by diffusion in the melt; however, apparent interdiffusivity values from these experiments are 10 to 20 pct higher than those obtained in the oxidation experiments, by virtue of convection arising from density difference. The results of the oxidation experintents are used to calculate an estimated self-diffusivity of iron in molten iron oxide of (1.5 * 0.5) x sq cm per sec. BECAUSE of the industrial importance of iron oxides, the study of the kinetics of both the reduction and oxidation of the solid oxides has received a great deal of attention. However, knowledge of the kinetics of similar reactions in the liquid state is very meager. Dancy 1 studied the kinetics of reduction of molten iron oxide by carbon in pig iron and found that the reaction is very fast. It was concluded from the results that the reduction of molten ferrous oxide is a first-order reaction up to 80 pct reduction, while

Discussion of the paper of L. G. HUNTLEY,. presented at the San Francisco meeting, September, 1915, and printed in Bulletin No. 102, June, 1915, pp. 1333 to 1349. E. W. SHAW, Washington, D. C. (communication to the Secretary*). -The comparatively great extent and uniform character of the Dakota sandstone make it of great interest to the student of rock pores and the movements of their fluid contents. However, compared with other sands in areas of carbonaceous rocks facts concerning it do not seem to be of such great direct importance to the producer for it has thus far yielded few important pools of oil or gas. Information concerning the sandstone is extensive but scattered, hence a general treatise regarding it-particularly its pores, the fluids they contain, and the movements of the fluids-has been much needed. I therefore feel that the. chief thing to be ,desired concerning Mr. Huntley's paper is that it were more extended, particularly as to the discussion of the data presented. The general structure map of the Dakota is of especial interest. Slight changes in wording seem to be desirable here and there in the paper. For example, at the beginning of the third paragraph one-wonders if flora instead of fauna were not intended. In Figs. 2, 3, 4, and 5 the vertical scale seems incorrect. Concerning the analyses of oil quoted it is noted that they "are given, as indicating what may be expected in different localities." This seems to need modification for the average analysis of oil from Powder River, which indicates for example that this oil begins to boil at 213°C. The fact is that the samples to which this figure refers were taken from seeps long exposed. to the air :find hence the underground Dakota oil of this district no doubt differs profoundly from that which the analysis indicates. The product of a well here would probably differ more in boiling point and other. respects from the samples analyzed than it would from almost any other petroleum in the world. The use of the word synclinorium does not conform to the original definition, but this may be pardonable because misuse of the term, though a different misuse, has become general. Synclinorium is an orographic term and cannot be correctly applied outside of mountain regions, for it is derived in part from the Greek word for mountain. It has, however, been widely used in a purely structural sense for compound syncline. The broad shallow syncline of the Dakota sandstone falls in neither category. THE system molten copper-oxygen-sulphur is of interest from both the practical and theoretical standpoints; practically, because oxygen and sulphur play an important role in the commercial production of copper, and theoretically because it offers a chance to study the reaction between an oxide gas, SO2, and a molten metal. Reactions of this type, such as that between CO or C02 and molten iron, are important in many metallurgical operations. Again, the determination of any gas-metal equilibrium is of theoretical interest and value insofar as it contributes to the general development of the laws for solution of gases in metals. This problem is being given an increasing amount of attention in modem metallurgy. This paper is the first of a series and presents the results of a determination of the solubility of sulphur dioxide in molten copper at temperatures from 1100° to 1500°C., and pressures from about 20 mm. of mercury to somewhat above atmospheric. REVIEW OF PREVIOUS WORK The solubility of gases in most liquids has been found to obey Henry's law, which states that for a fixed temperature the amount of gas dissolved is directly proportional to the pressure. However this law does not hold for liquid metals. Instead, it appears that for many gases, particularly the simple diatomic ones such as 02, N2 and H2, the amount dissolved in liquid metals is directly proportional to the square root of the pressure. This is known as Sieverts' law. It may be recognized as a special case of Henry's law, which applies when the solute gas is dissociated into atoms or when it reacts with the solvent metal to form solute molecules containing single atoms of the gaseous elements, as, for example: [2M -}-G2 = 2MGK =G) IYf X[I]] which, if the solubility is not too high and the concentration of metal therefore nearly constant, can be simplified to: [MG = Ki Pa,[2]] Following the same reasoning, it would be expected that the solubility of SO2 in copper would be proportional to the cube root of the pressure, the reaction being as follows: [6Cu + S02 = Cu2S + 2Cu20[3] K Cu2S X (Cu20)2(Cu)e(Psm)[4]] or, neglecting the change in metal concentration and considering that the concentrations of sulphur and oxygen are both proportional to the volume V of gas absorbed: [K1 =or Vdo,= K2/PBO [5] PsO]

The following analysis was an outgrowth of a midterm examination given by one of the authors (M.J.M) in a course entitled Metallurgy 541 "Applications of Dislocation Theory'' at Iowa State University. Fig, l(a) shows the three-layer sequence of atoms lying in the (111) plane which characterizes the fully ordered AB3 fcc crystal, i.e., LI2 type. If any two-layer sequence of close-packed planes is constructed from Fig. 16)' the structure would be hcp of the DO,, type. Consider for convenience that the circled atoms lie in the plane of the drawing while those shown square and triangular lie immediately above and below the plane of the drawing, respectively. It has already been shown' that if a Shockley partial dislocation is passed over the plane of the paper, then the square atoms in Fig. 1(a) are displaced from their original positions as shown by the arrows in Fig. l(b). Not only is an intrinsic fault produced but the crystal is simultaneously disordered across the slip plane. In particular, 2AB bonds are converted to 1AA and 1BB bonds when referred to the area outlined by the solid line in Fig. 1. If, on the other hand, a Shockley partial is allowed to pass immediately above and immediately below the plane of the paper so as to displace the atoms in opposite directions as shown in Fig. l(c), an extrinsic fault is producedZ and twice the amount of disorder is introduced into the crystal as compared to the dislocation-produced intrinsic fault, if only broken first-neighbor bonds are counted. If an intrinsic stacking fault is produced by removing a close-packed plane of atoms in Fig. l(a) and displacing the two adjacent planes by 1/3a0[111], no wrong nearest-neighbor bonds are produced. Similarly, if an extra half plane of atoms with the same arrangement as any of those shown in Fig. l(a) is inserted between any two planes in the same figure, then an extrinsic stacking fault is produced in which once again no wrong nearest-neighbor bonds are produced. The latter two faults are bounded by Frank partial dislocations. Since, at least in the alloy CU3AU,3 nearly all of the ordering energy resides in the first nearest-neighbor interactions, intrinsic and extrinsic stacking faults and associated APB's of the Frank type are expected to have significantly lower energy than those of the Shockley type in CusAu in particular and quite likely in L1, and DO19 type alloys in general. The Institute is at present in sound condition professionally and financially. During the past year 546 new members were elected, the total membership now numbering 5,221. The Treasurer's Report shows that the expenses of the Institute are met by its income. Your Directors have thought it wise to issue a referendum to the members asking for a vote upon the suggestion that the annual dues be raised from $10 to $12. This moderate increase is proposed not because the Institute needs it at present but to insure a continuation and increase in its activities and usefulness, and to provide a reserve fund for future emergencies. In well-conducted organizations, such as clubs, it is a wise and safe course to so adjust the clues of members that the total receipts from this source will about equal the annual expenditures, the initiation fees being used for reserve purposes. Our dues alone do not at present meet the expenses. This, I think, is the whole situation, so far as this question is concerned. Expenses might be reduced in some measure, but they cannot be materially reduced without affecting the integrity and usefulness of your Institute. Nothing of consequence in our internal affairs has occurred during the past year except, perhaps, the establishment of the Arizona Section and the prospect now assured of a Nevada Section. During recent months there has been a marked change in the relations of the Institute to its fellow societies and to the Government of the United States. That change is one of cooperation. The Secretary of the Navy has appointed two of your members to the Naval Consulting Board to cooperate with members of 10 other scientific organizations. A PRIMARY substitutional solid solution is a solution that has the same crystalline structure as the solvent metal, and in which solute atoms have replaced solvent atoms at random on the host lattice. This replacement usually results in an increase in hardness as measured by conventional penetration tests. The factors controlling this hardness increase have been investigated in some detail for copper and silver aneys.1-5 It has been shown that at least, four factors are involved: (I) concentration of solute, (2) row of the periodic table from which the solute is taken, (3) increase in lattice parameter of the solvent produced by the solute, and (4) work-hardening produced by penetration of the hardness indenter.2,4 The last factor is of the utmost importance. An investigation of the available data2.4 leads to the conclusion that the solutes that produce large hardness increases in copper or silver do so principally because they increase the rate of work-hardening. Furthermore, it is doubtful whether any solute produces appreciable hardening in the absence of plastic deformation and hence work-hardening. Thus it is clear that an understanding of the effect of solutes on rate of work hardening is essential to an understanding of the hardness of solid solutions. This effect of solutes is also important in forming operations such as rolling or deep drawing. The presence of elements that confer rapid rates of work-hardening will increase power consumption and may well decrease the amount of deformation possible between anneals. This paper is the report of an investigation of the factors that control rates of work-hardening in copper and silver solid solutions. The silver and copper alloys considered are those in which all solutes are from the B subgroups or second short period of the periodic table. Experience with hardness, with structure of alloys, and with electrical conductivity has proved that results of a fundamental nature are most likely to be obtained if alloys are made up on the basis of the positions of the constituent elements in the periodic table. In previous work, Meyer analysis data on high-purity copper and silver solid solutions were obtained through careful measurements with fully calibrated equipment and these data were corrected to correspond to a standard grain size. From these corrected Meyer analysis data rates of work-hardening have now been calculated. NATURAL stone or manufactured porcelain pebbles are used as the grinding elements in pebble mills and the mills are lined with stone or porcelain blocks. Steel balls usually form the grinding medium in ball mills, and the mills may he lined with steel. Pebble mills are used to avoid contamination by metal of the material being ground, to avoid rapid wear due to corrosion, and for other specialized reasons. Belgian silex (silica) blocks formerly were used widely for lining pebble mills, because of their good resistance to wear, light color, and low cost, but the importation of these blocks was suspended early in the war. The stocks of Belgian silex diminished so rapidly that it was found desirable to compare the properties of a number of domestic substitutes for use in critical operations. Accordingly, a study was made to determine the best substitutes for fine grinding of white pigment and for certain heavy-chemical process work such as the disintegration of phosphate rock in weak phosphoric acid solution. A comprehensive survey of substitute lining materials was not contemplated. It was stipulated at the beginning of the investigation that only materials on the market, available in large quantities, would be tested and that these should be reasonable substitutes from a wear-resistance viewpoint as determined from known physical characteristics. Marble and limestone, for example, could be eliminated immediately. Quartzite, granite and porcelain were selected as likely substitutes for Belgian silex and were subjected to quality tests. MATERIALS TESTED I. Belgian Silex.-Sample blocks of a standard grade were taken from crates in which they had been imported. The stone was light gray in color and contained inclusions of small clusters of quartz crystals as well as light colored portions that might be calcite. This was a siliceous rock which appeared to be of igneous origin. 2. Quartzite.-Samples of quartzite were obtained from a quarry in Minnesota. The blocks exhibited a crystalline fracture. The stone was pink in color and composed of fine quartz crystals bound together with a siliceous cement. 3. Granite A was a fine-grained granite quarried in South Carolina. 4. Granite B was coarse-grained granite quarried in South Carolina. 5. Granite C was a coarse-grained granite quarried in North Carolina. 6. Porcelain A.-Sample blocks of the pebble-mill lining material were obtained direct from the manufacturer. It was white in color and of lower specific gravity than the natural materials. PHILIP D. BLOCK, JR., vice president of Inland Steel Co., visualizes a fine future for the Menominee Range of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. He sees a future unclouded by threat from foreign ore imports or the development of low grade ore processing in Minnesota. The statement was made during the opening of Inland's new Cayia mine near Crystal Falls. Inland, according to the vice president, is planning to use an increased amount of the high phosphorous ores found on the Menominee Range. He said that other steel companies will probably do the same, because the steel industry has learned how to use ores of high phosphorous content. He said: "I do not mean to imply that we can use an unlimited amount of high phosphorous ores or that we can burden our blast, furnaces with 100 pct high phosphorous ores, but we have reached the point where we can absorb a much larger percentage of these ores without any detrimental effects. Foreign ores and lowgrade Minnesota ores cost too much to offer real competition, Block said. Transportation costs from the Menominee range to steel producing centers in Chicago and on Lake Erie are less than for any other range in this country. In the meantime, the American operators of the Bomi Hills iron ore mine in Liberia, have reportedly signed a new agreement with the Government. Several months ago, President Tubman of Liberia expressed a definite dissatisfaction with the original contract. Informants state that the agreement only needs the approval of the Export-Import Bank, which loaned Liberian Mining Co. $4 million to develop the iron ore properties. Majority stockholder of the Liberian Mining is Republic steel, with 61.57 pct of the stock. Under the new contract, the Liberian Government will start to share in the profits when the indebtedness is liquidated and the return of invested capital accomplished, or April 1, 1957, whichever is earlier. Under the old agreement the Liberian Government received a 5 cent per ton royalty and an additional sum based on the price of pig iron. The royalty rate reached more than 17 cents per ton this year. After debt liquidation the Liberian Government will receive 25 pct of net profits for the first five years; 35 pct for the next ten years; and 50 pct thereafter. Until the Government starts to share in profits it will receive a royalty of $1.50 per ton in U. S. currency, in addition to royalties provided for in the old agreement.

Oil and gas development as well as extensive leasing in Kentucky during 1940 has shown a marked improvement over the past three years.$ The most noticeable improvement is the gas development in eastern Kentucky and the deep tests being drilled by major oil interests. In western Kentucky, 406 wells were drilled, of which 173 were oil producers, 12 were gas wells and 221 were dry or abandoned. The number of dry tests was large, because no important, new oil or gas pool was discovered and many of the dry holes could be considered wildcat tests. However, with either oil or gas possibilities from Pennsylvanian formations on through Mississippian, Silurian, Devonian, and Ordovician, this percentage of dry holes seems rather high. Many of the dry tests possibly should have been tested in deeper horizons before being abandoned: namely, Silurian and Ordovician ages. In eastern Kentucky, 213 wells were drilled, of which 113 were gas producers, 61 were oil wells, and 39 were dry holes. Of these wells, 117 were drilled in the most important Big Sandy gas field, in Floyd, Pike, Knott and Martin Counties, and of this number 103 were gas producers, 5 were oil wells, and 9 were dry holes. In the Big Sinking oil field of Estill, Lee and Powell Counties, 70 of the remaining 96 wells were drilled, j6 being oil producers. During 1940, four deep tests were drilled in eastern Kentucky. One test penetrated the Knox dolomite in Knox County and was dry; no St. Peter sand was encountered. Another test in Lee County had some gas in what might be called St. Peter sand, according to the State Department, and also some gas deeper in the Knox dolomite. In Wolfe County, a small oil well was completed in the Ordovician, which was undoubtedly of Trenton age. ilt the present time, four deep tests are being drilled, all of which will go to the Knox dolomite. In Elliott County, on the Burke dome, the Inland Gas Co, is drilling at 3650 ft. In Magoffin County, on the Paint Creek uplift, the Cumberland Petroleum Co. is drilling at 3800 ft. In Clark County, in the Ruckerville fault area, W. 0. Allen is drilling at 1800 ft. In Laurel County, on the Sinking Creek dome, the Globe Oil and Gas Co. is drilling at I750 ft. If production is encountered in the Trenton, St. Peter, or Knox dolomite in any of these tests, eastern Kentucky will experience a marked increase in deep development.

(communication to the Secretary*)-In an article as brief as mine it was not possible to .fully cover the metallurgical field; this accounts for my not mentioning the electric furnace for the melting of ferromanganese in the manufacture of manganese steel, although the advantages of such an apparatus are fully appreciated by me. FREDERICK LAIST, + Anaconda, Mont. (communication to the Sec-retary?).-Manganese steel has proved very serviceable in our plant.. We are using manganese steel for the jaw plates on the 5-' by 15-in. crushers in the concentrator instead of cast-iron jaw plates which we formerly used. The manganese steel wears five times as long as the cast iron. We are also using manganese steel in our 8- by 20-in. crushers. In our primary crushers, which are 12 by 24 in., we still use cast iron because the manganese-steel plates wore unevenly and left shoulders which caused trouble in setting up the crusher. Another reason for preferring cast iron in these crushers is that they grip the ore better on account of wearing of the rougher surface. The surface of the manganese steel becomes polished and large pieces of ore fail to be drawn in. We recently tested 8- by 16-in. manganese-steel elevator buckets working on 2-in. undersize against malleable-iron buckets and found that manganese-steel buckets lasted two and one-half times as long as the malleable-iron buckets. We use manganese-steel screen plates on our 2-in. trommels and have found that they last about five times as long as cast iron. We also used manganese-steel wheels and rails under the 20-deck round table in our slimes-treatment plant. We first used cast-iron rails and wheels and found that these wore badly at the end of two or three weeks, while the life of the manganese steel seemed to be almost indefinite; we never had occasion to change any of the manganese steel rail sections or wheels in the year and nine months that the plant was in operation.

ONCE a millionaire's plaything, the Santo Domingo mine, in Peru, is now, because of its metallurgical problem, an engineer's nightmare. It is deep in the montaña jungles of the Amazon basin, 140 mi. northeast of Tirapata, which is a rail- way station between Puno and Cuzco, and about 250 mi. east of Mollendo on the Pacific. The discovery was 111ade by Marian(-) Quispe, an Indian, who, while searching for quinine bark, was attracted by a slab of gold quartz 1x1 the rock wall of a narrow canyon. He broke off a piece, weighing 47 Spanish ounces and, that time, worth approximately $900. This he took to Francisco Velasco and Manuel Estrada, merchants of Coaza, who persuaded Quispe to lead them to the place, five days' journey on foot through a tangled wilderness.
