The gravity concentrator of the Heela Mining Co. was originally constructed in 1888 by the Milwaukee Mining Co., which was operating the Gem of the Mountains mine. It was purchased by the Hecla Mining Co. in 1900, and placed in operation 2 years later. At that time the capacity was only about 200 tons a day, but many additions and changes in equipment have been made so that the present capacity is about 800 tons. The many alternatives open to coke plant operators for improving overall coke quality and strength are discussed in this paper. Programs undertaken by US Steel research and coal operations during the previous ten years to improve coke strength are described. New techniques in use, or being considered for future use, are also discussed.

The design of pillars around a longwall panel in which the effect of the adjacent and worked-out panel is taken into consideration is discussed. A mathematical model is used to duplicate field observations such as opening closure and pillar rib movement. The model is then used to predict the effect of changes in mining geometry on the opening stability.

At the present time, the mine-owner has a number of patent crushers to choose from, when contemplating the erection of a mill; and a number of new ones are yearly brought to notice. We all know that the stamp-mill is the old standard; but several of the patent crushers, especially of the roller-type, are not without their merits. Having had a working experience, extending over a period of four years, with the " Bryan roller quartz-mill," working alongside of stamp-batteries, I take pleasure in giving to the members of the Institute the benefit of my experience with this mill.*

SOME readjustments in the research programs of most of the oil companics and petroleum engineering schools have been made necessary by the war. The most obvious change has been the conversion from production engineering to problems more closely related to the nation's was effort. Many laboratories now devote much of their time to studies on products to be derived from petroleum. such as synthetic rubber, toluene, and substitutes for critical materials. Others are working to improve motor fuels including high-octane gasoline and the special lubricants required by the wide geographical range of the present conflict. Of great importance is the experience of the geophysicists, who are now devoting a great percentage of their time on instrument research and production or special apparatus required by the armed forces.

The following is a very rapid method for determining copper in steel. I have found it to give results very closely agreeing with those obtained by galvanic precipitation of the copper. Five grams of steel are dissolved in a mixture of 100 C.C. of water and 10 C.C. of sulphuric acid. When all is dissolved, add 2 C.C.

NATIONAL DEFENSE should not create a dilemma in coal utilization such as obtained during the World War. Even under the heavy pressure of a total preparedness program there should be a smooth flow of the right coals from mines to plants. The more than 100,000 industrial plants of the nation must he served with coal of such characteristics and qualities for their individual requirements that no loss of production due to coal failure shall occur. This problem challenges the ingenuity and cooperativeness of producers. transportation executives, consumers and engineers.

BECAUSE of the nature of the environments in which metals are handled, it is natural that gases should be suspected of intruding into metallurgical operations, there to produce effects both beneficial and detrimental. The problem of tracing and controlling such effects is often made difficult by the complexity of the conditions surrounding 'their occurrence, even though the fundamental mechanisms involved may be simple and of familiar type. Many gas-metal reactions are known to be implemented by processes of diffusion. These form a homogeneous group of phenomena which become more readily understandable when viewed together, in that the knowledge gained from one serves to interpret the next. It is the purpose of the present paper to present, by means of examples drawn from practice, a brief survey, of the ways in which gas-metal diffusion serves and obstructs the purposes of the metal-fabricating industries. The selection of the cases described was made by consulting more than thirty-six practicing experts whose combined experience provided an extensive coverage of the field and who were in a position to supply examples of occurrences of present day interest. The response was generous and it is regrettable that space permits the description of only a limited number of typical examples with but brief mention of parallel cases. THE NATURE OF GAS-METAL DIFFUSION The term "gas-metal diffusion," although commonly used, is ambiguous in so far as it implies that a definite group of substances may be identified as gases and may be expected to behave in a manner distinct from other substances in association with metals. "Gases" such as oxygen and hydrogen when diffusing through a liquid or solid metal are properly components of the liquid or solid solution; they behave as alloying elements and are not to be distinguished in their diffusion characteristics from other elements, except that each has an individual rate of diffusion. On the other hand, a number of metals in certain temperature ranges are volatile to the extent that they may appear in the form of vapor in metallurgical operations. For the sake of greater definiteness, therefore, it will be convenient to- regard as "gas-metal diffusion" any process in which the result depends upon one or more of the diffusing elements appearing, at some stage, in the gaseous state, or as a compound gas. Recent disclosures concerning strengthening of anisotropic sheet materials under biaxial stresses are reviewed. This biaxial strengthening has been termed "texture hardening" by Backofen and is related to the normal anisotropy parameter, R. Measurements of R made on three annealed titanium alloys indicate a Ti-4Al alloy will have the greatest potential for texture hardening, followed in order by Ti-5Al-2.5Sn and Ti-6Al-4V. Relative to sheet texture, a review of the deformation mechanisms in titanium alloys would indicate that a preferred orientation for "texture hardening" is where the (0001) pole is normal to the sheet plane. This was confirmed by determination oj (0001) pole figures for the above three alloys. High R values are related to pole figures with (0001) normal to the sheet plane, whereas low R values are related to pole figures with (0001) split in the transverse direction from the sheet normal. PUBLISHED work by Backofen et al. 1 and Hosford and Backofen2 based on hill's' mathematical theory of yielding in anisotropic metals has indicated that significant strength advantages under biaxial stresses are possible in hcp alloys, provided an ideal (0001) [1010] sheet texture exists. This tendency to strengthen under biaxial stresses has been termed "texture hardening".1 It can be quantita- tively characterized by a strain-ratio parameter, R, where R may be determined from the ratio of natural width strain to natural thickness strain as measured on a uniaxial test specimen cut parallel to the rolling direction. If R is greater than 1.0, then strengthening under biaxial tension would be predicted. Considering the a titanium alloys which have an hcp crystal structure, Williams and Eppelsheimer4 have reported that commercial-purity grades deviate from the ideal (0001) sheet texture mainly in an approximate 30-deg rotation of the basal plane, toward the transverse sheet direction. However, McHargue et a1.5 have shown that the angle of rotation of the basal plane is sensitive to alloy content. In particular, a titanium alloy with 3.8 pct Al was reported to have the ideal (0001) [1010] texture after cold rolling. Additionally, Backofen et a1.1 using plane-strain compression tests have reported R values greater than 5.0 for the commercial 0 alloy Ti-5A1-2.Sn (110-AT). In view of these findings, a program was initiated to further determine the potential of commercial Ti-5A1-2.5Sn and an experimental Ti-4A1 alloy with respect to "texture hardening". Also, because of its wide commercial use, Ti-6A1-4V was included in the investigation. From its modest beginning in 1957 with one mill grinding section handling 3000 tpd Pima has steadily expanded. In July 1966, work was completed that allowed the concentrator to treat in excess of 18,000 tpd. Almost immediately Pima embarked on another expansion program that will increase plant capacity to 30,000 tpd during the summer of 1967. This repeated expansion has corresponded with the development of additional low-grade ore deposits and with the improved operating economics realized by handling larger masses of material. Early in the life of Pima it was known that a mineralized area was present on the flanks of the high-grade orebody which systematic drilling had shown to be a low-grade copper orebody. Many months of engineering studies revealed that this was sufficient to allow Pima to compete with other large scale, low-grade copper operations in the Southwest.
