As far as the present writers know, this system of flotation has not been used elsewhere in this country, but in the last couple of years it has been introduced, with minor variations, at one plant in England and one in Wales. The system has been described and discussed in a number of publications. The following is quoted from an abstract of the latest of these," a paper presented at an International Conference on Industrial Combustion in 1952. On the basis of experience to date with the commercial plants, it is believed that the kerosene-flotation process incorporates all the necessary elements to make it greatly superior to anything else now available for treating of fines in wet processes of coal preparation. Additional study and investigation are still needed, however, to determine if certain phases of the process can be improved to such an extent as to make it generally satisfactory and acceptable to the industry. Further improvements will be needed with respect to the capacities of the flotation cells and the reagent consumption.

SILVER Bell is situated 35 airline miles northwest of Tucson, Ariz., in a small, rugged range rising above the extensive alluvial plains of this desert region. Its geographical relation to other porphyry copper deposits of the Southwest is shown on the inset map in the lower left corner of Fig. 1. The climate is semi-arid. Altitudes range within 2000 and 4000 ft. Opening of the Boot mine, later known as the Mammoth, in 1865 was the first event of note in the district's history. Oxidized copper ores containing minor silver-lead values were mined from replacement deposits in garnetized limestone and treated in local smelters. Copper production had approached 45 million pounds by 1909 when the disseminated copper possibilities in igneous rocks were recognized. Extensive churn drill exploration carried out during the next three years resulted in partial delineation of two copper sulphide deposits, the Oxide and El Tiro. Although the then submarginal tenor discouraged exploitation of these disseminated deposits, selective mining of orebodies in the sedimentary rocks continued intermittently until 1930, providing a production total of about 100 million pounds of copper. The American Smelting & Refining Co. began exploratory and check drilling in 1948 and subsequently made plans for mining and milling the Oxide and El Tiro orebodies at the rate of 7500 tons per day. Production began in 1954 at a rate of about 18,000 tons of copper annually. Formations ranging in age from Pre-Cambrian to Recent are exposed in the Silver Bell vicinity. The more erosion-resistant of these, Paleozoic limestone and Tertiary volcanics, predominate in the scattered peaks and ridges comprising the Silver Bell mountains. The porphyry copper deposits are located along the southwest flank of these mountains in hydrothermally altered igneous rocks. These are principally intrusives which cut Cretaceous and older sediments and are considered to be components of the Laramide Revolution. For three-fourths of its length the zone of alteration strikes west-northwest, Fig. 1. There now is no single structure that accounts for this alignment. However, indirect evidence suggests that a fault representing a line of profound structural weakness existed in this position prior to the advent of Laramide intrusive activity. This line will be referred to as the major structure. It was obliterated by the Laramide intrusive bodies but exerted a degree of control on their emplacement, as evidenced by their shapes and positions. The influence of fault structures on the shapes of intrusives in other porphyry copper districts has been noted by Butler and Wilson' and by others. As shown on the inset map on Fig. 2, a fault of parallel trend and considerable displacement lies to the north. This fault is now marked by a line of small Laramide intrusive bodies. To the south is a third fault of large displacement. Evidence of its age in relation to the Laramide intrusions and mineralization is not recognized, but its conformance in strike with the other two major faults is significant. These three breaks establish a pronounced trend of regional faulting. They are high-angle, and the southerly one may be reverse, Stratigraphic separations on these faults are of the order of several thousand feet. The local Paleozoic section is about 4000 ft thick. It is composed predominantly of limestone with a basal quartzite member. The Cretaceous section appears to exceed 5000 ft. Conglomerates, red shales, and arkosic sandstones (the youngest) characterize the three principal members. Intrusion of alaskite marked the beginning of Laramide igneous activity. It was emplaced as an elongate stock with one side closely conforming to the major structure line throughout a distance of nearly 4 miles. The alaskite was at one time regarded as a thrust block of pre-Cambrian rock'; however, its intrusive relationship and consequent post-Paleozoic age has been established by inclusions of limestone found in outcrops north of El Tiro. The next event was the intrusion of a large stock of dacite porphyry into Paleozoic sediments and alaskite. The stock was some 3 miles wide and at least 6 miles long in a northwesterly direction. It was sharply confined along its southwest side by the major structure line. A number of large pendants of moderately folded Paleozoic sediments occur within and along its southwest edge. Thus the inferred, original major fault between Paleozoic and Cretaceous sediments became a contact between alaskite and Paleozoic sediments and then a contact between dacite porphyry and alaskite. Andesite porphyry may have been intruded later than the dacite porphyry, but relationships are not clear; it may be simply a facies of the latter. The intrusive activity was at this stage interrupted by an interval of erosion. The erosion surface probably was rugged, as there were local accumulations of coarse, angular conglomerate. Subsequently a series of volcanic flows and pyroclastics several thousand feet thick was deposited. A similar unconformity has been recognized elsewhere in the Southwest, particularly in the Patagonia Mountains near the Flux mine some 75 miles southeasterly. Here, as at Silver Bell, volcanics were deposited on an erosion surface cut in Cretaceous and older sediments which had been intruded by alaskite. Though no evidence is offered that closely defines the age of this unconformity, and proper analysis of the problem is beyond the scope of this paper, it is

The knowledge-feigning, theory- straining mining engineer." -Anonymous INTRODUCTION Taxes levied against mining properties and operations are a critical cost in the economic evaluation of mining investments. Indeed, taxes represent a substantial cost of doing business in the minerals industry and often have a significant impact on corporate investment decisions. A good example was the postponement of mineral development in the state of Wisconsin, primarily because of what was perceived to be excessive taxes imposed by that state. In many respects mining investments are no different from other industrial investments. Astute taxing authorities should recognize that geologic endowment is a necessary but clearly not a sufficient condition for mineral investments. The fact that a mineral deposit exists does not necessarily mean that it will ultimately be developed-a point that many taxing authorities fail to recognize. While it is true that ore deposits are not mobile in the sense that they cannot be physically moved to a district having more favorable taxes, corporate investment capital certainly is mobile and flows to ventures which maximize wealth to the firm. In short, higher taxes reduce project yields and tend to drive investment capital elsewhere. The appropriate type and level of taxation imposed upon the mining industry continues to be a very controversial and emotion-charged topic. Mining activities have been taxed at various levels over the years due to widely differing taxation philosophies. Location has also influenced taxation policies, as evidenced by the diversity of tax laws and assessment procedures applied to mineral deposits by the various states. Indeed, mineral taxation varies from state to state, from county to county, and from one mineral commodity to another. Whether or not a given tax is appropriate for a specific mineral deposit, or even an industry, is a difficult problem to assess. First, the type or kind of tax which should be imposed must be considered. Second, it is most important to define a fair and unambiguous base against which to levy the tax. Finally, one must consider the tax rate to be applied to this base. It is the combination of these two components

THE obligation of an employer to the State requires certain things of him as matters of good citizenship: for instance, that his workmen shall have a living wage, that child labor shall not be employed, that injuries from accidents shall not- make workmen a charge upon the State, and that the laborer's children shall have opportunity for education and to become good and useful citizens. Affairs of this kind are not taken up as philanthropy, for the officials of a corporation or a large manufacturing concern may not feel at liberty to spend the funds of their company as prompted simply by motives of kindliness; but they may spend company money on such matters because it is good business. For years, the poisonous effects of lead, phosphorus and dust have been emphasized in books on industrial hygiene and their elimination has been urged; but the more important and everyday physiology of the workman himself has been neglected. Part of my object in writing this paper is to show how our knowledge of physiology may be applied to working conditions in everyday life. In the interest of industrial laborers, accident compensation laws have been enacted in 33 States. This has been carried forward rapidly, because it has been shown that it pays both employer and employee. A further step is the recognition of sickness and disablement independent of accidents, not only because of their immediate cost to the worker and to the employer, but because continued efficiency in work and business depends largely upon health. Some measure of the importance of health in industry can be gained by the knowledge that records kept by some companies which now make this the subject of careful inquiry show that the time lost by employees, through illness; is several times as much as that lost as the result of industrial accidents. It is true that accidents frequently result in permanent disability or death, but it is equally true that illness is also a cause of permanent disablement or death. Thus the chief difference is that the loss to the employee through accidents occurring in the course of his employment is now generally recognized as a cost

The underground losses of oil exceed by hundreds of thousands of barrels all the oil that has been lost in storage, transportation, or refining. The quantity lost is, of course, indeterminate; but when it is considered that the contents of an entire oil field have been excluded from recovery by invading waters, some idea of the amount wasted may be gained. Similarly, enormous quantities of gas have been lost underground. Conservation of the oil, therefore, should start before it is brought to the surface rather than after it is placed in storage tanks. Water is one of the most important causes for underground losses and the operator should give as serious consideration to an underground flood of water as he would to a destructive surface flood. The best insurance, of course, is to have the wells drilled in such a manner that water has no access to the productive oil and gas horizons, and on abandonment the wells should be properly plugged. The encroachment of edge water and the occurrence of waterin;the base of an oil sand present a very serious problem to an oil company sooner or later these waters are bound to cause considerable damage, if they do not entirely destroy the possibilities of further production. Too often, however, a field has been considered to be in a hopeless condition, whereas wells in as bad a condition in other areas have been repaired and the life of the field appreciably lengthened. The corrections are very often suggested by technical study. Very successful results have been accomplished by detailed underground work in the California oil fields, in Cushing, Oklahoma, and in other areas. The purpose of this paper is to outline briefly1 general methods of analyzing oil-field water problems in a producing or in a producing and developing oil field, with a view to suggesting repair work on offending wells. Reference is continually made to producing oil wells; the same general method of procedure, however, should be adopted in a gas field.

The operating plant of The Broken Hill Associated Smelters Pty. Ltd. is situated at Port Pirie in South Australia and it treats to finality the whole output of lead concentrates from the mines of The Zinc Corporation Ltd., North Broken Hill Ltd., and aroken Hill South Ltd. at Broken Hill, New South Wales. Lead bearing ores from other sources are also purchased for treatment and lead scrap and residues are treated on a toll charge basis. The present output of the plant is approximately 200000 tonnes of refined lead per annum and there is a substantial production of by-products including refined silver, gold, cadmium, antimonial lead alloys, copper matte and sulphuric acid. Recently the Company commenced the production of zinc by slag fuming and electrolysis from a six million ton dump of lead blast furnace slag, which has been accumulating at Port Pirie for over fifty years. The slag fuming plant contains two furnaces of conventional design, but features a high degree of pre-heat for the blast air and this is obtained by the use of all-metal recuperators. The raw zinc oxide fume produced by the plant is roasted in a rotary kiln prior to treatment in the leaching and electrolysis sections, which follow conventional practice for nigh current density plants. Present output is approximately 36000 tonnes of electrolytic zinc per annum.

THERE exists an unconfirmed opinion among many ironmasters that the combination of a small quantity of manganese, chromium, titanium, tungsten, aluminium, nickel, and some of the metalloids with iron has a beneficial effect upon the quality. And the impression prevails in some localities that the excellence of steel greatly depends upon the influence of some of these elements. But as the recorded experiments are so meagrely described, and made under such various conditions, the student in search of information upon the subject is somewhat bewildered by the contradiction of the opinions expressed. Observing some interesting phenomena while experimenting with an alloy of iron, copper, and nickel, I was led to determine the effect of some of the metals upon iron as free from contamination by other elements as it is possible to procure in prac¬tice, in order that the result of an alloy of an individual metal with iron might be more closely studied ; for it is almost an impossibility to determine the influence of a small amount of one element upon a metal combined with a large amount of another, and the mere presence of another sometimes makes this difficult. And as most of the experiments recorded upon this subject have been made with iron containing sufficient carbon and other elements to interfere with the effect of that metal the influence of which it was desired to observe, I have endeavored to avoid these sources of error as far as practicable. A systematic program of investigations covering all aspects of cell hydrodynamics,1-3 flotation kinetics,4,5 surface chemistry and their interactions has as a major objective the elucidation of the flotation micromechanism and the principles of cell design and scale-up.6 Purely from the scale-up point of view, a family of reactors should enable different throughputs of the same material to be similarly treated or, at least, to be treated in a manner which differs beween reactors in a predictable way. Thus, for the same material and residence time, the recovery and grade from differently sized cells of the same family should, ideally, be similar or, at least, be related to each other in a known way. It is well known, however, that different-sized cells do not always achieve similar results, and it is necessary to enquire into the reasons for these differences. For example, it may be that the relative dimensions of different-sized cells result in hydrodynamic conditions which preclude similarity; if so, different scaling may improve the situation. The major question concerns identifying the dynamic conditions and their associated geometric requirements which govern the flotation process, and the criteria which are necessary for their fulfillment. It is to answer such questions that the program referred to earlier was instituted. In connection with this program and in order to examine data concerning the physical features and operating conditions of existing flotation cells, the following survey was carried out. This work represents an approach which is complementary to experimental investigations, for it recognizes that the design of existing cells may embody several of the principles being sought. If data for enough cells, especially families of cells, are examined, some broad requirements common to all cells may emerge.

IT is well established that dislocations exist in crystals and account for crystal plasticity.' However, the origins of the dislocations are not clear. Among the means by which dislocations might originate are: a) through crystal growth accidents, b) by the collapse of condensed sheets of vacancies, or c) by stress-induced nucleation. Theoretical calculations' have indicated that the last means should require very high stresses in order to operate. The purpose of this paper is to show that the stresses around the tips of cracks are large enough to nucleate large numbers of dislocation loops. Specifically, it will be shown that (100) cleavage cracks in LiF crystals nucleate dislocations in regions of the crystals where dislocations did not exist previously. It is believed that the use of LiF for this investigation does not restrict the significance of the 1 results. In fact, it is believed that this complements and extends previous papers by the same author which dealt with metal crystals.10,14 The dislocations were detected by means of the etching techniques that were described in a previous paper by Gilman and Johnston.3 In that paper it

The selection rules fir twinning in fcc, bcc, and hcp lattices as established in Part I are used to predict the positions, relative to the matrix (untwinned) reciprocal lattice, of reflections due to double diffraction from the twins. These doubly diffracted reciprocal lattice points, which often coincide with ordinary matrix reciprocal lattice points, are deduced from kinematical considerations. 1. INTRODUCTION. A Bragg diffracted beam under certain conditions may be rediffracted to produce a third beam i .e., the incident beam, the first diffracted beam, and the rediffracted beam). In such a case an initial incident beam is diffracted by a set of planes; the diffracted beam may then be rediffracted by a second set of crystallographically different planes. The initially diffracted beam acts as an incident beam for the second set of planes, thus resulting in a twice-diffracted beam. This twice-diffracted beam may be regarded as a singly diffracted beam from a set of lattice planes whose structure factor is zero. In order to find the reciprocal lattice point corresponding to the doubly diffracted beam, it is customary1,2 to combine vectorially the component reciprocal lattice vectors which head to the extra reflections. For example, hcp metals may exhibit the forbidden (0001) reflections.* As Fig. 1 shows, the (0001) reciprocal lattice point results from: (1010) + (1011) = (0001) Similarly, combination of the beams (1011) and (1010) gives rise to: (1011)- (1010) = (0001) As Pashley and stowell2 have pointed out, even if in fact the double diffraction points lie on the Ewald sphere, they may not actually represent observed doubly diffracted beams because the initially diffracted primary beam, i.e., the source, must also correspond to a reciprocal lattice point which lies on the sphere of reflection; however, the reciprocal lattice point corresponding to the planes causing the rediffraction need not lie on the sphere. A little consideration of the Ewald construction in Fig. 2 makes this argument clear. In Fig. 2 the incident beam is represented by the wave vector ko. This beam is initially diffracted by the lattice planes (hkl) which are represented by the reciprocal lattice vector r(hk1) The reciprocal lattice point (hkl) of course lies on the Ewald sphere in order that the Bragg condition be satisfied. The initially diffracted beam is represented by the wave vector kl. If now kl is rediffracted by a second set of planes (h'k'l') resulting in k2 the lattice point (h"k"l") must lie on the Ewald sphere if the double diffracted beam k2 is to be observed. It is clear that (h"k"l") is the vector sum of (hkl) and (h'k'l'), and that (h'k'l') need not in fact lie on the Ewald sphere. In the usual1,2 analysis the origin (000) of the reciprocal lattice is shifted to the point (hkl). However the translation (000)— (hkl) automatically shifts the point (h'k'l') to the Ewald sphere, i.e., (h'k'l')— (h"k"1"). It is to be seen that (hkl), the source reflection, must lie on the Ewald sphere; if it does not the translation (000) — (hkl) places the "new" origin off the sphere, not satisfying the Ewald construction and hence the Bragg condition. The point (h"k"1") of course must lie on the sphere if it corresponds to an observed doubly diffracted beam. It is to be noted that crystals having the hcp structure, as just discussed, are intrinsically capable (i.e., without lattice defects such as twins) of double diffraction, as contrasted to fcc and bcc crystals which are extrinsically capable (requiring lattice defects or reoriented lattice regions). The "allowed" bcc reciprocal lattice points (which comprise an fcc lattice) are (110), (2001, (211), (220), (310), (2221, (321), (4001, and so forth. The combination

IN connection with other investigations on the properties and characteristics of chilled iron car wheels, the question as to the best range of annealing temperatures was raised. Chilled-iron wheels are cast with a chill against the tread and the inside of the flange, the remainder being in sand. The composition of the metal is so chosen that under these conditions the tread and inside of the flange will show white iron to a depth of from 5/8 to 7/8 in. (15 to 22 mm.), the remainder of the wheel becoming graphitized or gray. In order to relieve the stresses set up during cooling under such drastic conditions, the wheels are stripped from the mold, while still red hot, piled in a soaking pit, and allowed to cool very slowly from their temperature at stripping. Obviously the most suitable temperature for this annealing is the highest at which no formation of graphite occurs within the white tread and at which the wheels can be stripped from the molds. Inasmuch as no direct determinations have been made of the temperatures at which the' formation, of graphite takes place in white iron of compositions used in car wheels upon annealing, it was considered worth while to determine these temperatures as a means of establishing the maximum temperatures at which the annealing of the wheels may be carried out. In the course of this work, some incidental observations were made which are of interest in connection with the theory of graphitization in white iron. The literature on the subject of the formation of graphite both during cooling at casting and upon annealing is very extensive and can be best studied by reference to a comprehensive discussion of the subject by Hatfield. 1 Perhaps the most important contributions of previous investigation are the following: 1. Whether a given mass of molten iron becomes white, mottled, or gray upon casting, depends on its composition and its rate of cooling through the temperature range of solidification and immediately below.

The vacuum filter operating variables that influence cake moisture are discussed. The influence of temperature control, particularly through application of steam to the cake, is emphasized. Results of pilot plant studies on filtration of fine hematite concentrates are presented and discussed, and are shown to support the theoretically-derived conclusions. Results on fine magnetite concentrates are also used to support the argument. The relative merits of disc and drum filters from the standpoint of cake moisture are discussed. Moisture content has always been recognized as one of the most important properties of concentrates used as pellet plant feed. Most iron ore concentrates are produced by wet methods, and are finally de-watered on filters. Obviously, a real economic advantage accrues to the ability of control the moisture content of the filter cake within the range required for optimum pellet production. Another consideration, also, has been receiving increasing attention recently. Transoceanic shippers of concentrate cargoes are critically assessing the hazards of excess moisture. The nature and magnitude of these risks have been described, ' and it appears that their elimination may require that residual moisture be somewhat lower than the limit for proper pelletization. Coarse, very free-filtering materials, such as the products of spirals, are usually best handled on top-feed types of machines. The moisture content of the cake may be held at a specified value by proper design and operation, taking into account cake thickness, air-flow rate, and drainage time. Fine-grained concentrates, with which we will be concerned here, must be filtered on Drum or Agidisc machines. With many of these materials, it is possible, by proper design, to meet cake moisture requirements with a conventional filter station. The first installations to produce high-grade pellets from magnetic taconites fell in this class. In fact, the design criteria were developed in connection with operations of Reserve Mining Co. at Silver Bay, inn.,2 and these have been verified repeatedly in other mills. The trend today, however, is toward the production of more difficultly dewatered concentrates. This is due on the one hand to the increasing attention being given to non-magnetic ores, which tend to be far slimier, and therefore much more retentive of moisture, than the magnetites. On the other hand, the pressure to improve the grade of the magnetic ores is leading to finer grinds, which also are more difficult to dewater. In the latter case, the decision to improve grade in an existing operation by finer grinding for better liberation may lead to two unattractive alternatives: 1) substantially higher bentonite consumption, plus the risk of poorer quality pellets, from high cake moisture, or 2) installation of a thermal dryer. There is, however, a third alternative. In recent papers by two of the authors3,4 it was shown that for many materials a significant decrease in cake moisture can be obtained by applying live steam to the cake face during the drying part of the filter cycle. Further, this limited drying appears to have distinct economic advantages compared to thermal drying. It is the purpose of this paper to explore the third alternative. To do this, the results of an extensive pilot study of steam filtration of a hematite flotation concentrate will be critically examined. This study was sufficiently broad so that a number of alternate suggestions (besides steaming the cake) for reducing moisture content were tested, and comparative data for both Drum and Disc filters were obtained. The work was particularly interesting since the concentrate has a high Blaine surface, and is therefore particularly difficult to dewater to the levels required. FILTER CAKE MOISTURE The significant difference between concentrate filter cake as discharged from the filter, a cargo of that same filter cake during or after shipment, and a green ball formed from that filter cake is in the relative volume of voids, or porosity. FORM of ore bodies, strength of wall rock, and quantity of water that must be handled differ so greatly in the various districts in which the Corporation operates that a variety of mining methods have to be employed. All are underground, however, with the exception of glory holes at Cerro de Pasco from which siliceous silver pacos ore is obtained. In general, the ors is in many relatively small bodies unsuitable for hulk mining, such as caving or top slicing. The strength of the rock and ore rarely permit open stopes, though shrinkage is successfully used on various veins with strong walls, particularly in, Casapalca. Horizontal cut and-fill and square-set stoping with careful filling are the principal methods employed, with the necessarily higher cost for supplies and labor offset as much as possible by care in the avoidance of dilution. The mines at both Morococha and Casapalca are notoriously wet, and even at Cerro de Pasco the quantity of water was enough to retard deep development until the perfection of electric pumps. In Morococha particularly, the extension of successive levels, first from adits of moderate length, then from shafts and heavy pumping installations on the 750 and 1000 levels, and finally by the 30,564-ft. Kingsmill tunnel, was one of the most difficult and long continued fights against water and resulting heavy ground that is recorded in mining history.

Who would believe that young elementary school children could understand something as complex as the mining industry? The Challenge The challenge of accomplishing this is tremendous. An examination of Canadian school children indicated that they knew very little about the world of work in general, and hardly anything about the mineral resource industry in particular. It calls to mind the story about two youngsters who decided to play house. The little girl played her role well as she went about the house doing things she had watched her mother do every day. When it was the little boy's turn, he grabbed his lunch, waved goodbye to his "wife," jumped on his bicycle and pedalled furiously down to the end of the driveway-where he stopped. The youngster explained that he saw his dad go out of the driveway each morning, but he didn't know where he went, or what he did on the job. When you stop to consider the number of families today with two working parents, you can begin to appreciate the importance of the opportunities for role identity provided by this project. The Approach The challenge of teaching the school children of Canada about the world of work and, specifically, the mining industry is the challenge which the Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy met with the Curriculum Development Research project. It started when a small, dedicated group of Vancouver members met Dr. Doreen Binnington. After this meeting, Dr. Binnington, an expert in curriculum development at the University of British Columbia, set herself to develop a curriculum program for the elementary shcools which accomplishes two main goals: It uses the "Identity Approach," developed by Dr. Binnington, an expert in curriculum development at the enable students to understand and appreciate the contribution of people, in this case, working with mineral resources. It has pupils enthusiastically exploring the importance of rocks, minerals, and the mining industry in their lives [(Fig. 1)]. ON the 6th of February 1684, Dr. Martin Lister mentioned at a meeting of the Royal Society1 that "brass is magnetical," and promised to give an account of that assertion at some other time. He repeated his promise but never fulfilled it, and it was left for William Arderon2 to show, in 1958, that brass could be made magnetic by hammering and that it would retain polarity after magnetizing. Twenty-seven years later Cavallo3,4 examined the matter in great detail. Working with cast calamine brass, he showed that it could be made magnetic by hammering and nonmagnetic by subsequent annealing at a red heat. He found that annealing at a very high temperature caused the samples to lose their magnetic quality permanently, even after subsequent cold-working, but that remelting and cold-working restored it. He encountered some samples of brass that could not be rendered magnetic by any treatment. Experiments in which these were remelted with iron additions gave negative results, and Cavallo concluded that iron impurity was not the cause of the magnetism. He worked with 50-grain (3-gram) samples melted under the blowpipe, hence cooled very quickly. Bennet5 made whole crucible charges from copper and zinc, and found the resulting brass ingots to be magnetic only when iron had been added and then only after cold-working. All these observations applied to material in the cast condition, in which coring would produce a continuous spectrum of composition and cooling would result in varying degrees of precipitation. This knowledge of the subject seems to have been forgotten in the nineteenth century. The older brass was made by the calamine process and frequently contained iron in amounts of 0.5 per cent or more, absorbed from the impure ore with which the copper and charcoal were heated in making the brass. When metallic zinc became available in commercial quantities, calamine brass gradually disappeared, and with it the knowledge of its curious magnetic properties. Only when sensitive apparatus replaced the compass needle of the earlier investigators could the effects be detected in relatively pure metal. The effect of cold-working in inducing ferromagnetism was rediscovered by Bitters in 1930 in a sample of impure copper, and this was confirmed by Lowance and Constant,9 Honda and Shimizu, 10,11 and others. In the same year, Tammann and Oelsen12 showed that copper-rich copper-iron alloys after certain heat-treatments could be rendered ferromagnetic or made more strongly ferromagnetic by cold-rolling. Kussman and Seeman13 showed that the change of susceptibility of relatively pure copper on cold-working was associated with the iron content, and concluded that actual precipitation of iron was caused by cold-working, which is a satisfactory theory until one considers the improbably high rate of diffusion that this would involve. THE experiments described in this report were conducted as a part of a general program designed to document the deformation behavior of pure metals over a wide range of temperature. Material The silver used in this investigation was obtained from the Handy and Harmon Co. as 99.97+ pct pure. It is from the same length of wire as that designated H-H silver by Hoffman and Turnbull in their investigation of self-diffusion in silver.' The silver was drawn at room temperature from 0.060-in. diam to 0.020-in. diam wire without intermediate annealing. Seven-inch lengths of cold-drawn wire were annealed in groups of ten by placing them in individual quartz tubes spaced circumferentially about and near the vertical furnace axis. Dry nitrogen was passed through the furnace to lower the partial pressure of oxygen. The three annealing temperatures used were 700°, 800°, and 900°C, producing grain sizes of 0.017, 0.040, and 0.250 mm diam after 30 min at temperature. For several years this Institute has recorded in its Transactions the various discoveries of potash‡ in America, and the successive stages in the development of an independent domestic potash industry. This paper is intended primarily to continue the record through the year 1935. In retrospect it is not inappropriate to note that public interest aroused in 1910 resulted in the production of some 1090 tons of pure potash in 1915, as a small beginning in the domestic inorganic potash industry, and that the infant industry thus begun reaches its majority this year, following a record production in 1935 of about 600,000 tons of potash salts and exports to no less than 22 foreign countries, including six countries in Europe. This production, with an estimated 200,000 tons of pure potash, may be compared with a production in 1934 of 430,157 tons of salts with an equivalent of 144,342 tons of pure potash. Mine and Plant Improvement During 1935, the American Potash & Chemical Co., at Searles Lake, Calif., began to reap the benefits of its previously enlarged plant facilities, which increased its productive capacity to 180,000 tons of muriate annually. The United States Potash Co., at Carlsbad, N. Mex., improved its operations by installing trolley locomotives and other haulage facilities and is maintaining its development headings two years in advance of operations, with projected plans for orderly mining for years to come. The hoisting shaft at its mine is now equipped to hoist at the rate of 1,000,000 tons annually, and the refinery to produce 150,000 tons of muriate containing less than one per cent of impurities. The Potash Co. of America, at Carlsbad, N. Mex., completed the conversion of its plant from a prospecting to an operating basis late in 1935. In metallurgical circles it is known widely, but somewhat vaguely, that the ease of reduction of metallic oxides depends largely on the way they hare been prepared. It is likewise known that different forms of carbon have different and greatly varying reducing powers. It is the purpose of this paper to show somewhat more definitely and scientifically these facts. Some years ago the writer published an account of pyrometric determinations of the reduction temperature of zinc oxides variously prepared and of several kinds.' In said paper it was shown that the temperature at which zinc oxide evolves zinc according to the equa-tion ZnO + C = Zn + CO depends upon the nature of the two reacting bodies. The determina-tions had a range of accuracy of from 2° to 6°C., whereas differences were found to amount to an extreme of 90' C. So the differences are real ones and must have a definite cause. The equation of boiling water, (H2O)4 D 4 (H2O) has a fixed temperature for equilibrium of 100° C. at 760 mm. pressure. In general, all equations reacting in the liquid or the gaseous phase have well-defined constant physical conditions which govern the equilibrium point and reaction velocities. In a reaction where we have one or more solid phases, the tempera ture conditions requisite for the unbalancing of the stable system are found to vary. These variations are due to the fact that in a solid there is a very complex molecule and it is not a question solely of the tearing away of two interlocked atoms, but also of the destruction of a complex molecule containing hundreds, or possibly thousands, of smaller molecules.
