Methods of studying oilfield mineral .scale deposition in the laboratory do not work for barium sulfate because only small nonadhering crystals ore formed. On the other hand, barium sulfate scale found in down-hole or surface equipment is strongly adhering and may contain very large crystals. Results suggest that most of the difference derives from the extremely low .solubility of barium sulfate. Firm adherence of scale and the consistent development of oriented crystals 100 microns and larger suggest a relationship between scale adherence and crysta1 growth. Data from this study indicate some reasons for barium sulfate's occurring as a deposit in oilfield waters. The unique characteristics as well as the associative properties of barium sulfate scale as related to calcium carbonate and calcium sulfate ere shown. INTRODUCTION The first observed deposition of barium sulfate scale in oilfield production equipment is unknown but probably coincides closely with the beginnings of the oil industry itself. Moore' described barite oolites in some producing wells in the Saratoga field, Tex., in 1914. Currently, positive identification of barium sulfate deposition is recorded in most of the major oil-producing areas of the United States. As efforts continue to identify the composition and functions of the materials found in scale deposits, the geographic and economic importance of the part played by barium sulfate will become even more important. This belief is based on the following Facts. 1. Many oil fields in the U.S. are in or entering their mature phase and the volume of produced water is increasing; thus, the cumulative effects of low-solubility minerals become more significant. 2. Secondary recovery techniques and increased emphasis on waste disposal systems require controlling the behavior of all constituents of water to prevent formation plugging. 3. The more general use of instrumental analysis has reduced the time and improved the accuracy of complete scale and water analysis. 4. Once formed, barium sulfate scale is resistant to present methods of chemical removal; therefore, costly mechanical methods are necessary. Thus, new methods of prevention and control will require specialized chemical techniques and better knowledge of the causes of scaling. Consider the results of some simulated field deposition studies illustrating this need (Fig. 1). The studies utilized a Scale Deposition Test Cell* and each coupon was exposed to 8,000 ml of a 300 me/liter solution of the various types of mineral scale. All tests were conducted at 140F. Only the calcium sulfate and calcium carbonate deposited scale. The solution containing 300 me/liter of barium sulfate exhibited copious amounts of precipitate, but none of the precipitate adhered. The fluids from the effluents were also allowed to impinge on glass slides. Fig. 1 shows the relative adherence of the three types of scale on unetched glass. The barium sulfate failed to deposit in the same manner as the calcium carbonate and calcium sulfate solutions.

An aluminum-copper 4 pct Cu alloy aged at room temperature for times increasing up to 78,000 hr was annealed at 170°C and the hardness and electrolytic potential determined during retrogression and subsequent aging. It was found that there is a change of behavior with increasing time of aging at room temperature which indicates that, given sufficient time, retrogression disappears and the room-temperature aging tends to progress directly into the high-temperature aging. WHEN an age-hardenable alloy is aged at low temperature after proper quench, changes of properties and structure take place. If this material is then heated to a temperature higher than the previous one, but still well below the solution-treatment temperature, the properties and structure changes produced by the low-temperature aging disappear and the material apparently reverts to the as-quenched condition, ready to undergo aging from the start. This phenomenon is termed reversion or retrogression. First discovered by Cayler3l it has been extensively investigated, as shown by the number of publications listed in the bibliography. From all the information available the following facts emerge: 1) All aeg hardenable alloys can be retrogressed.9 13, 19) 24, 33, 41, 42, 44, 47, 53, 54, 61, 63, 64, 66, 73, 78 2) All the properties changes that take place during aging at low temperature can be retrogressed to a smaller or larger extent.4,5,7,12,19,32,49,50,57,58,60,67,75,76 67, 75, 76 3) Retrogression requires that the temperature be well above the preliminary aging temperature. If the difference between the two temperatures is small, Little or no retrogression takes place.7,20,32,33,41,49 57. 65 4) The larger the difference between the preliminary aging and the retrogression temperature, the faster and more complete is the retrogression.20, 33, 41, 48, 65, 67 5) Retrogression can be produced several times in the same alloy.23, 35,41,57,59 6) The amount of retrogression that can be obtained depends on the aging temperature. Alloys aged at the lower temperatures can be retrogressed the most. The higher the preliminary aging temperature the less retrogression can be produced.20,25,33,37,44,49,54,58 7) Appreciable retrogression after aging at elevated temperatures is possible only if the preliminary aging has lasted a short time. After a certain time of aging at high temerature retrogression does not take place any more,:5,6,9,10,11,21,40,58 8) During retrogression the Guinier-Preston zones redissolve and disappear. The estimate of average vein composition is based on field acquaintance with the veins. It is probably correct in its broader proportions, and should be of use for comparison. Basic laboratory tests on trona and the surrounding shales initiated the Rock Mechanics program. The stress-strain curve, modulus of elasticity, Poisson's ratio, the uniaxial rock strength, Mohr's envelope, the biaxial stresses at failure, and creep were investigated. A series of underground problems were then approached using this information and various field measuring devices, most of which were developed by the Bureau of Mines. Initially, stress concentrations near mine openings were evaluated using the stress relief technique. This required an accurate determination of the pre-mining stress field. Later, stress concentrations associated with the cave line were studied. After about 30 stress reliefs over an appropriate time interval the effects of one type of mining could be compared against another. The microseismic technique was used to investi- gate a possible application of warning devices near the cave line. A study of mine reorientation was made. Problems related to the shape and size of pillars and barriers were studied. The effectiveness of roof bolting patterns was examined. Control of roof stresses was attempted. A new system of mining in heavy ground has been developed using the information secured in the Rock Mechanics program. Without this system, mining in more than one instance would have been next to impossible. Indeed, from this one discovery alone, the Rock Mechanics program has paid off in improved safety as well as in dollars. The Westvaco trona* mine is located near the town of Green River in the southwestern corner of Wyoming. It is owned and operated by FMC Corp. on land leased from the US Government, the State of Wyoming, and the Union Pacific Railroad. As one surveys the extensive taconite operations on the Mesabi Range, he may find it difficult to believe that only 15 years ago, the iron ore mining industry here was staring at its own imminent demise. Due to the high demands for iron ore during World War II the postwar period of 1946-1950, and the subsequent "police action" in Korea, there was rapid consumption of the Mesabi's already depleted ores, and some economists were giving the Range only 20-25 years of life. In the 13-year period 1941-1953, more than 850 million tons of iron ore were shipped to steel mills, an amount almost equal to the total production during the preceding 30 years. Proven ore reserves dropped from 1.1 billion tons in 1940 to 8.3 million tons in 1954, the largest decrease being recorded in the famed direct shipping ores.

This paper covers the practical aspects of economic analysis of mineral ventures and the application of a publicly available computer program. The paper touches briefly on the time value of money concepts and the phases of project evaluation. The most comprehensive port ion of the paper deal s with the requirements for economic evaluation, including capital expenditure categories, operating expenses, required geological and engineering data, and tax considerations. Highlights of the 1981 and 1982 tax laws are covered. A case study using the MINECO computer program will be used to illustrate the economic evaluation concepts developed. Guidelines and goals of sensitivity analysis and Monte Carlo simulation will be discussed and demonstrated on the MINECO example. The MINECO software system will be displayed as an example of a "user-friendly", interactive, and flexible computer tool available to the mining professional today.

INTRODUCTION By the end of 1979 pellet productive capacity from the processing of low grade iron ores in the Lake Superior-District will total 86 million tons per year. Of that tonnage, 72 million result from the processing of magnetic ores such as taconite, about 6 million tons from the flotation processing of relatively coarse grained specular hematite, and 8 million tons from the processing of fine grained non- magnetic ores at Tilden. The Tilden flowsheet represents a break- through in the processing of this type of crude ore and hence is unique in the Lake Superior District (1). Operations at Tilden started in late 1974 with Algoma Steel, J&L Steel Corp., The Cleve- land-Cliffs Iron Company, The Steel Company of Canada, Ltd., Wheeling- Pittsburgh Steel Corp., and Sharon Steel Corp. as participants. Cleveland-Cliffs operates and manages the operation. Other companies have conducted extensive pilot plant tests or are in commercial production in the processing of fine grained non-magnetic ore materials (2). Flowsheets and reagent schedules may be different for each particular application, but some of the problem areas in the processing of Tilden ores have also been experienced at operations such as the IOC Plant at Sept-Isles, at Lamco and at Bong in Liberia, and in pilot testing of Fabrica ores of Ferteco Mineracao in Brazil. With a grind of about 80-85% -500 mesh resulting in 50% of the particles in the concentrate being less than 15 microns, a discussion of the pro- cessing of Tilden type ores fits the topic of this workshop. There are very large tonnages of fine grained non-magnetic crude ores which exist throughout the Lake Superior District and other iron ore producing regions. They may also provide special characteristics such as thermal and acoustical insulation, weight, surface textures, abrasion resistance, and impermeability to various concrete products and mixes. Most aggregates are relatively inexpensive materials, but despite their low unit value, the tonnages consumed each year in the United States and throughout the" world make mineral aggregates by far the leading industrial mineral and rock materials both in terms of volume (tonnage) produced and value consumed. The major use of mineral aggregates is in concrete. The low cost, high bulk aggregates tend to keep concrete construction costs at levels competitive with other building materials. Other major uses of aggregates include highway and railroad base or ballast materials, graded fill, and various industrial uses such as metallurgical and chemical fluxes and raw materials-these latter uses are often considered nonaggregate uses of mineral aggregate materials. The per-ton value of mineral aggregate materials at the production plant in 1980 and 1981 varied from $2 to $5 for most sand and gravel and crushed stone, $3 to $6 for air-cooled slag, $7 to $20 for expanded slag and expanded clay or shale aggregate, to as much as $165 to $320 for expanded perlite or vermiculite. The expanded lightweight aggregates have been dramatically affected by increasing fuel costs. It is ironic that the specialized aggregates used as insulating materials to conserve energy cost so much more to produce due to the high proportion of energy consumed in their production. The first four parts of "Construction Materials" deal with the utilization of four major mineral aggregate types: Crushed Stone, Lightweight Aggregates, Sand and Gravel, and Slag. While the focus will be on the use of these industrial minerals and rocks, there will also be some coverage of sources, mining and production, especially in those cases where they are not discussed in the Commodity section of this book.

DEVELOPMENT OF MONEY AND MONEY STANDARDS This chapter is concerned with the rise, and then the decline and fall, of gold and silver as monetary metals. As a first step in tracing the history of this process, it is necessary to consider the nature of money, and the manner in which different forms of money have developed over the centuries. The origins of money go back into deepest antiquity. Once men ceased to be pure nomads and entered into even a rudimentary form of society such as clans or tribes, money had to be invented The first step was barter as farmers or hunters swapped their surplus products for things produced by artisans such as shoes, clothing, and simple tools. But such barter trading is inconvenient even in primative societies It is difficult to match up buyer and seller at any point in time There are problems in arriving at viable and acceptable terms of exchange. The accumulation of savings-wealth-is complicated. No one can be sure that a pile of furs, or wheat, or certainly fish or game can be used in the future to trade for other goods or services. So even prehistoric man saw the need for money. There was a need first for something to serve as a medium of exchange This was an essential first step in the process of specialization-or the division of labor. A farmer, a hunter, or a shoemaker could only devote his full efforts to his trade if he could be sure that he could exchange his surplus production for the other things he needed for existence. This required a medium of exchange-a form of money which would be broadly acceptable. Money was needed for two other reasons Some system of market prices was essential to facilitate the exchange of goods and services. This required some form of common denominator-some standard of value-to govern the exchange process. And there was also need for something to serve as a store of value, a place to put any excess production (savings) with the assurance that it can be used in the future to acquire a general range of goods and services. As a result, money, in one form or another, developed at a very early state in civilization. Yet the centuries have been marked by a search for a form of money which will possess in full measure all of the attributes in money-a reliable and universally acceptable medium of exchange, standard of value, and store of value. -A wide variety of things have been used as money at one time or another: shells, beads, stones, feather, metals, and even the teeth of sharks and dogs. Some of these things were obviously of little or no practical value. They were used because people had confidence in their continued acceptance as a medium of exchange. Measurements of gravity with gravimeters have come into increased use in this country and abroad in the past five years. Probably 100 to 125 gravimeter parties are working in the United States alone. In oil exploration, gravimeter methods have relegated the gravity pendulum definitely to second place, if not third, and now closely rival and possibly surpass the torsion balance in many applications. Gravimeters have lately been applied in mining, although it is doubtful whether they will ever replace electrical or magnetic methods in this work. Notwithstanding the widespread application of gravimeters, there has been no article covering the entire field in the domestic or foreign literature. The purpose of this paper is to meet the demand for comprehensive engineering information on the subject. The working principles of a number of gravimeters will be illustrated and treated in relation to the action of corresponding seismometers and astatization methods. The mathematical discussion of theory has been confined to the most necessary fundamentals and been given in as elementary form as possible. A description of calibration methods constitutes the last part of the paper. The symbols shown at the top of page 197 will be used in equations throughout the paper. Dynamic and Static Gravity Methods Methods of measuring gravity fall into two groups: dynamic and static methods. The first group involves the measurement of time. Examples are: determinations of the period of oscillation of a pendulum, measurements involving the free fall of a body, and comparisons of gravity with the centrifugal force of a rotating body. Measurements in the second group of gravity methods are concerned with deflections of certain indicators when the force of gravity is in equilibrium with another comparison force.

SPEED is essentiaI in this war program and it is hard to keep up with developments. When the title of this paper was chosen, the contemplated magnesium production for which plants were then under construction was some 200,000 tons of metal per year or sixty times the 3350-ton production in prewar 1939. A few- days later an analysis of the President's 185,000-plane pro-gram, incendiary bomb schedules, and the additional requirements of the Army. Navy and Maritime Commission made it apparent that a much greater amount of magnesium must be provided in 1943. The new figures are huge but the censor will not per-mit their disclosure.

A PROCESS for the electrolytic preparation of molybdenum from molten salts has been described previously. This previous work centered on electrowinning and electroplating characteristics of the process. In this paper the properties of the process as a refining medium are discussed. In producing metals from ores, it frequently has proven most economical to obtain a comparatively impure metal by smelting, and to purify the product by electro refining. Direct electrowinning from molten salts is rather difficult when a porous diaphragm is required in the process, as in the case of molybdenum, since satisfactory refractory materials for such a diaphragm in molten salts have not yet been developed. In electrorefining, however, a soluble anode is used. By suitable control of anode and cathode current densities, the lower-valent molybdenum compound used in the electrolyte is not oxidized, and a diaphragm is not needed, thus avoiding difficulties which are encountered with other electrowinning processes. Electrorefining may result from two different processes in the cell: Dissolution of the molybdenum and the less noble impurities with a separation of the more noble impurities as an anode sludge; the electrodeposition of molybdenum and the more noble metals at the cathode, leaving the less noble metals in the electrolyte. The amount of separation which occurs in each process is determined by the potential of the operating electrode and the relative concentration of the various species at (or in) that electrode. Since molybdenum has a comparatively noble position in the EMF series in molten alkali halides,2 most refining would be expected to occur at the cathode. In this work only the cathodic process was studied. The objective was to determine to what extent various metallic ions, if they dissolve from the anode or are otherwise introduced, were concentrated in the electrolyte. The necessary conditions for the separation of each and the limiting concentration which may be tolerated in the electrolyte for effective refining were studied. The deposits were chipped from the cathode and analyzed spectrochemically for metallic impurities. Besides determining the major contaminant, a general qualitative analysis was obtained to be sure that other metallic ions were kept at a very low level during each series of runs and to be sure that the baths were not being contaminated accidentally. Samples of the bath, for analysis, were taken at the temperature of operation so there was no chance of selective crystallization during cooling. In this way the ratio of molybdenum in the bath to the other metal could be determined readily. These data permitted a check on the anode efficiency and any volatilization that took place during the electrolysis. Experimental Apparatus—The apparatus as shown in Fig. 1 was used to determine the effect of the various foreign ions upon electrodeposited molybdenum. The entry chamber A allowed the cathodes to be removed without cooling the bath and without allowing oxygen or moisture to enter." The cathodes were made Prom 0.25-in. tungsten rods and were rotated during the electrolysis. The balloon in the lower arm B was inflated with helium after the cathode was drawn up into the upper section for removal. A new cathode was then placed into the entrance chamber A after which the chamber was flushed

IT would clearly be advantageous to produce molten titanium, suitable for alloying and casting, directly from the relatively inexpensive tetra-chloride, without using a metallic reducing agent. Accordingly, a preliminary investigation has been made of the production of titanium by hydrogen reduction of the tetrachloride in an electric arc furnace. For the reaction: TiCl4(g) + 2H2(g) ? Ti(s) + 4HCl(g), Lockhart and his colleagues' have calculated equilibrium constants at 800" to 1500°K, based on tables of Brewer.' Extrapolating these data on the assumption that the heat of reaction varies linearly with temperature, and using Brewer's value for the heat of fusion, there is obtained for the reaction: TiCl4(g) + 2H2(g) ? Ti(l) + 4HCl(g) an equilibrium constant at 2100°K (100" above the melting point) Kp = (PHCl)4/pTlcl4 (Ph2)2 = 0.167 atm. If this is correct, starting with hydrogen saturated with TiC14 at 25°C, where the vapor pressure of the latter3 is 12.6 mm, and maintaining the overall pressure at 1 atm, 99 1/4 pct of the TiC14 would be reduced to Ti at equilibrium. An arc furnace designed for the melting of titanium and lined with water-cooled copper was used for the preliminary experimental check. Its inside diameter was 2 7/16 in. and height 6 in. The water-cooled electrode was tipped with 3/4 in. diam tung-sten. In the one run carried out, the furnace was charged with a starting batch of 293.35 g of scrap titanium,' analyzing 99.24 pct Ti. After the system was twice pumped out and flushed with argon to remove air, the arc was struck in argon and kept at 400 amp dc, electrode negative, for 1 min to melt the starting batch. Commercial tank hydrogen, dried by passing over silica gel and bubbled through technical grade TiC14 at room temperature, was then admitted to the furnace. The inlet tube directed this gas downward toward the arc and melt; the gas outlet was at the top of the furnace. The quantity of gas passed through was not measured accurately but is estimated to be about 50 liters per min at a few mm of mercury above atmospheric pressure. The arc was held in the H2-TiC14 mixture at 400 amp with little difficulty. After 10 min the arc burned through the copper lining above the melt, admitting water and ending the run. (This had happened frequently in straight melting runs under argon, and is not thought due to the atmosphere used.) In the furnace were found an ingot, several small pieces, and a little metallic powder, evidently formed when water entered the hot furnace. Some titanium also clung to the electrode. The portions were weighed and separately analyzed for titanium. Their total weight was 321.76 g of 94.82 pct overall purity. Much of the impurity consisted of tungsten broken off when the titanium was removed from the electrode. No detailed impurity analysis was made because the starting materials were impure and flooding the furnace introduced further contamination. Thus, the metal recovered contained 305.08 g Ti, as compared to 291.12 g in the starting batch. Titanium could not have been carried over from previous melting runs in the furnace, as the interior was sandblasted and the electrode ground clean before the run. Evidently at least 13.96 g of Ti were produced from TiCl4. Since this would require complete reduction of 430 liters of TiCl, gas at 12.6 mm of Hg, the efficiency of the process must have been rather high. Experimental work is continuing. No reason is seen why the process could not be scaled up to the size of a 30-ton steel-melting arc furnace. In a large unit there would be a large molten pool from which liquid metal could be withdrawn for alloying and casting. The problems of electrodes and power supply are similar to those arising in arc furnaces for melting titanium. Unreacted TiC14 and the HC1 in the exhaust gases could be recovered; unreacted H2 could be dried and re-used. The melt would be saturated with hydrogen, whose solubility in liquid titanium is unknown. Small amounts of hydrogen seem to have little effect on the properties of titanium.5 If the amount introduced was so large as to impair properties or cause casting difficulties, it could be reduced by holding the melt under an inert gas or by pumping on it, prior to casting. The effect of rate of deformation on texture formatiotz has been studied with cube-oriented single crystals of 3 pct Si-Fe, compressed 80 pct at two widely different rates. Compression at a low rate (crosshead speed, 0.1 ipm) produces large orienta-tional changes and coarse deformation bands, whereas little change in orientation is observed, particularly at the surface of the crystal, when compressed at a high rate (impact velocity, -500 ips). Thin plates of mechanical twins are produced at the high rate, but their contribution to the deformation texture is practically negligible. The crystal deformed at a high rate has a lower hardness and a more uniform dislocation structure and is morc resistant to recrystallization. There is also a dilference in the recrystallization texture between the slowly and rapidly compressed crystals. These results indicate that plastic flow is less "turbulent" at high strain rates than at low strain ratcs. THE behavior of metals under high-speed deformation has been the subject of wide study in the past decade. Most of these works were concerned with mechanical properties during testing at high rates of loading, the resulting structures, and the theoretical aspects of the observed phenomena. The present status of knowledge and research activities in this field has been documented in recent publications.17' There is, however, very little information available in the literature concerning the effect of high-speed deformation on the texture formation in metals. The possibility of an effect of rate of deformation on texture is suggested by the microstructural differences observed between normally and very rapidly deformed samples. Aside from the strong tendency for twinning (and phase transformation in certain metals) in high-speed deformation, the slip-line patterns and the dislocation configurations show marked differences as a result of large differences in the strain rates. For instance, in mild steel in static and dynamic compression, Campbell and co-worker3,4 observed that coarse slip occurred on several systems in specimens deformed at normal strain rates, whereas specimens deformed rapidly showed only fine slip on fewer systems, the slip-line pattern being very similar to that in specimens deformed at low temperatures and at normal strain rates. The absence of multiple slip was also noticed by Dieter5 in shock-loaded nickel. The dislocation configuration in an iron shock loaded at 70 kbar pressure was shown by Leslie et al.6 to be similar to that produced by light rolling at low temperature—the dislocation lines were mostly straight and uniformly distributed. These observations suggest that the mode of deformation at high strain rates is notably different from that at low strain rates. Consequently, the nature and the extent of lattice reori-entation during deformation should also be different. This investigation was undertaken to test this idea. MATERIAL AND METHOD The remaining part of a single-crystal ingot of a 3 pct Si-Fe alloy,* prepared for an earlier investi- gation,1 was used in the present studies. Specimens 9/16 in. square and 0.365 in. thick were cut from this ingot with (001) planes parallel to the square surfaces, and the [loo] and 1010] directions parallel to the edges of the specimen, within ±1 deg. These machined crystals were etched to remove distorted metal, and annealed at 1300°C for 24 hr in a purified helium atmosphere. The annealed crystals had a hardness of 161 Dph. The crystal orientation was rechecked with X-ray back-reflection techniques. In high-strain rate experiments the crystal was compressed in a Dynapak machine to approximately 80 pct reduction in thickness (from 0.360 to 0.070 in. with an impact velocity of -500 ips). Thus, the duration of loading was approximately 6x 10-4 sec, and the average strain rate was about 103 sec-1. As a result of this rapid, severe deformation, the specimen became a roughly circular thin disc. The original shape of the crystal, however, could still be recognized by a diffusely outlined square area in the center of the disc. Diffusion coefficients for the Cb-W system were measured using couples prepared from poly crystalline, commercially pure metals. The diffusion coefficients, measured in the temperature range between 1700° and 2300°C, decreased exponentially as the tungsten concentration was increased from 0 to 50 at. pct, then decreased abruptly at higher concentrations. A decrease of two orders of magnitude was observed over the entin? compositional range. The diffusion coefficients were in the range defined by the self-difiusion coefficients of the individual elements, indicating their general validity. An activation energy of 60,500 cal per mole was measured for the 20 pct W composition. Such low values, when compared with energies over 100,000 cal per mole for the pure constituent elements, indicated that transport mechanisnzs more rapid than volume diffusion were contributing substantially to inter dijfusion. Difference should, therefore, be expected between these data and the intrinsic diffusion coefficients. These differences should be significant in the kinetics of 'transport phenomena in practical systems. CONSIDERABLE attention has been devoted in recent years to the mechanical behavior and other properties of the refractory metals and their alloys. The Cb-W system has been of special interest as a base for the development of more complex compositions of commercial interest. In spite of the importance of mass transport to all aspects of elevated-temperature behavior, and especially to the production of alloys by powder-metallurgy techniques, little attention has been paid to diffusion in the Cb-W system. Results from a previous study of this system1 appeared to be anomalously high. The present investigation is, therefore, an attempt to obtain more accurate diffusion coefficients in this system. Intrinsic diffusion coefficients, of primary importance from the theoretical viewpoint, can only be obtained accurately from studies utilizing compositional gradients approaching zero. However, many practical problems involve diffusion under significant concentration gradients. The diffusion coefficients determined in this investigation were, therefore, obtained from couples prepared from elemental metals. The data obtained should be of value in the analysis of problems such as homogenization during powder-metallurgy alloying or reactions between base and clad in coated structures. In this vein, the investigation was conducted on poly crystalline materials of commercial purity. PROCEDURE Diffusion couples were prepared by sandwiching a columbium sheet between two sheets of tungsten. The composite was welded around all edges, the tungsten forming a protective can for the columbium. The composite was soaked for 4 min at 1600°C in a hydrogen-atmosphere furnace, quickly forged to 40 pct reduction in thickness, and then rapidly cooled to room tempera-

Crude oil stocks were some 10,000,000 bbl higher on June I, 1947, than at any time during 1946 but the extremely heavy refinery runs the last half of 1947 cut crude inventories to approximately the 1946 closing level of 225,000,000 bbl. Many refiners were seriously short of crude oil during the year. This shortage was reflected in numerous advances in the posted price of crude, justified in part as an incentive for more production but more generally due to competitive bidding. Some purchasers of crude, endeavoring to keep their plants running, resorted to the payment, either directly or indirectly, of premiums above the posted price. Another common practice employed by some suppliers of crude oil was to demand refined products in exchange or trade for their raw material. The refined products picture has darkened in spite of record throughputs. Stocks of gasoline and light and heavy fuel oils were uncomfortably low at the beginning of the year and were in general still lower at the close. The rationing of some products, principally gasoline, to dealers and stations? initiated during the year, gained momentum as stocks continued to diminish. The emphasis placed by the manufacturers of oil-burning equipment on the convenience and economy of heating with oil, together with the tight situation in coal, has developed a tremendous demand for burning oils. Consumption of liquefied petroleum gas for domestic and household fuel had more than doubled in 1946 over 1943, and the demand seems to be limited only by the ability of the equipment builders to furnish necessary storage. transportation, and burning equipment. Demand for petroleum products is being pushed to new heights not only by the unprecedented domestic market but by a sudden and drastic upswing in estimates of military and governmental requirements. Present demand dictates maintenance of refinery operations at the highest possible level and the Bureau of Mines has forecast daily average crude runs in 1948 of 5,265,000 bbl. The Economics Advisory Committee of the Interstate Oil Compact Commission recently estimated the 1948 demand for petroleum products at nearly 6 pct above 1947. They further estimate daily average crude runs of 5,375,000 bbl in 1948, some 2 pct higher than forecast by the Bureau of Mines. Projected demand exceeds supply to the extent that Capitol Hill is reportedly investigating ways of enabling oil companies to act in concert without danger of antitrust prosecution, such as elimination of crosshauls, pooling of products, and lowering of octane.
