Pfleider, University of Minnesota I would like to ask Bob Merrill whether he considers that horizontal concave curvature of a slope has any stabilizing effect, such as Jenike 1 suggested several years ago. R. H. Merrill, U. S. Bureau of Mines, Denver Federal Center The stabilizing effect is due to the restraint offered to radial movement by the curvature. We found in laboratory tests that if we constrained the rock with the same stresses as those measured in the pit then it would sustain a maximum stress about two or four times greater than when the same rock type was unconstrained. We are therefore definitely of the opinion that a constrained situation in a slope is favorable towards stability. G. A. Leonards, Purdue University I was interested in Mr. Lane's observations concerning the correspondence between rate of slide movement with rise of reservoir. Perhaps the most interesting feature is that the rate of movement at the time the rock slope failed was less than the rate at an earlier time when it did not fail. This is difficult to explain from current slope stability theory. K. S. Lane, U. S. Army Corps of Engineers I believe that reduced rate of movement is the result of the progressive type of failure, such as described by Patton and Deere. which occurs along the sliding surfaces. It is difficult to analytically define the progressive failure condition for inclusion in slope stability conditions, but its existence should be recognized in design. We should also realize that many apparently stable slopes undoubtedly contain overstressed regions. To design a slope with no overstressed region would be uneconomical and conservative. D. H. Deere I would pose the question-"What is the meaning of a factor of safety of one?" We were involved in the design of a large, irregularly shaped, underground cavity with an unsupported span of several hundreds of feet. Tests on rock specimens indicated a strength of 1300 lb per sq in. The RQD would have been between 90 to 100 percent indicating excellent structural continuity. In-situ stress determinations indicated an approximately hydrostatic state of stress at a level of 1400 lb per sq in. Calculation of stress concentrations at the walls indicated that the stresses there would be about 3000 to 4000 lb per sq in. Admittedly the rock is in a confined condition everywhere except at the very skin of the wall and the rock walls would thus on the average be somewhat stronger. Allowing for the effect of restraint the factor of safety was found to be less than 0.5 over a region several feet into the wall. Construction was started, using rockbolts only to support the walls. IN an earlier paper1 measurements of contact angles due to the effect of xanthates on mineral surfaces were reported. The solutions in which these measurements were made differed widely from those of modern flotation circuits. It is intended, however, by introducing, one at a time, the other principal reagents of flotation, to approach gradually the solu-tion composition of flotation liquors. The work now described is an attempt to determine the effect of one of the most important of these reagents-namely, sodium cyanide-on the establishment of air-mineral contact. The work has been carried out for the following companies: Broken Hill South, North Broken Hill, Zinc Corporation, Electro-lytic Zinc of Australasia, Mount Lyell Mining and Railway, and Burma Corporation. Since the effect of cyanide is inseparably connected with the alkalinity, the results cited below deal with the mutual effects of alkalis and cyanide. Alkalis alone exert a significant effect on the air-mineral contact but comparatively large amounts are required. Since the addition of a small amount of cyanide greatly decreases the degree of alkalinity necessary for the suppression of contact at surfaces of any of the minerals experimented with (except galena) and since alkalis are rarely used alone in practice, little attention has been paid to cyanide-free solutions. It was shown in the previous paper that, excluding the dixanthogen effect, whenever contact was practicable at all in an ethyl xanthate solution the angle of contact was 60°. There is, therefore, less necessity to measure equilibrium contact angles; in fact, the experiments herein described have generally been conducted with a view to determining whether contact is possible and not to measuring the actual value of the contact angle. T. E. Leontis (The Dow Chemical Co., Midland, Mich.)—This paper is of particular interest to me because of my own work with F. N. Rhines on the oxidation of magnesium and magnesium alloys a few years ago. The authors are to be complimented on their development of an accurate and reproducible technique for measuring ignition temperatures and on their comprehensive study of the many variables that affect the ignition temperature of magnesium. It is indeed gratifying to see that they have obtained a good correlation between ignition temperatures and the oxidation rates reported by us. The correlation is valid not only with composition within one alloy system but also between alloy systems; that is, alloying elements which effect the greatest increase in oxidation rate also produce the greatest decrease in ignition temperature. There are a few points upon which I would like to comment. In attempting to correlate ignition-temperature data, one must be sure that the same definition of this quantity is used by all investigators. It does not appear to me that such is the case in the authors' comparison of their data with the theoretically calculated values of Eyring and Zwolinski. The equation derived by these investigators defines the ignition temperature, To, as the temperature at the gadoxide interface, whereas the present authors use the metal temperature as the criterion for ignition. The contradiction in the effect of oxide-scale thickness on ignition temperature between the predictions of the Eyring-Zwolinski equation and the observations reported in this paper indicate that some variable has not been taken into consideration. Could that be the geometry and size of the specimen? There is a marked difference in the type of specimen used in this investigation and that used in our work which formed the basis of Eyring and Zwol-inski's theoretical treatment. Another factor which plays an important role in ignition is the vapor pressure or the rate of vaporization. Combustion can safely be assumed to take place in the vapor phase by the reaction between vaporized magnesium and oxygen. Thus, a more accurate theoretical analysis may be made on the basis of the rate of vaporization which may be the controlling rate of the process. The effect of a large number of alloying elements on the ignition temperature has been reported in this paper, but beryllium was not included. Practical experience dictates that beryllium markedly decreases the burning tendency of magnesium. I was wondering if the authors plan to study the effect of beryllium in their future work. The authors predict that concentrations of sulphur dioxide in the furnace atmosphere greater than 5.8 pct would be expected to increase the ignition temperature to values still higher than those they measured. I would like to mention that large concentrations of sulphur dioxide markedly increase the rate of combustion of magnesium once ignition has started. Although it has been shown in the paper that the ignition temperature of magnesium in oxygen increases with increasing sulphur dioxide content up to about 1 to 2 pct, in practice relatively low-melting commercial cast alloys (AZ63A and AZ92A) are being continuously heat treated at temperatures just below the melting point in air containing 0.5 to 0.75 pct SO*. In regard to the change in color of the oxide scale observed on magnesium and magnesium alloys just prior to ignition, I would like to mention that in our work alloying elements were found to color the usually white magnesium oxide even though ignition did not occur. For example, the oxide formed on Mg-A1 alloys was gray, increasing in intensity with aluminum content in the alloy. Finally, I might suggest that the authors indicate their source of the value of 0.8 g per cc for the density of MgO as it is formed on magnesium upon oxidation at elevated temperatures. W. M. Fassell, Jr. (authors' reply)—The comments by Dr. Leontis are very excellent ones and I will attempt to answer them in order. First, the problem of ignition of magnesium is a rather difficult one since many factors are involved. Concerning the comparison of the To in the Eyring-Zwolinski equation, eq 4, with the experimentally determined values, it will be noted that the calculated and experimental values of the ignition temperature in Table I are not self-consistent. In the case of the 1.78 pct A1-Mg alloy the calculated value is 49°C below the experimental value; for the 3.81 pct A1-Mg alloy, 122°C below the experimental value; for Mg with 5x10-' cm film, 19°C above the experimental value; for Mg with 2x10-I cm film, 28 °C below the experimental value. Thus, if it were merely a matter of difference of location of temperature measurement the calculated ignition temperature would always be below the experimental value, the difference being due to the thermal gradient through the oxide film. The possibility of a thermal gradient in the magnesium metal must be considered. From Carslaw and Jaeger,'Y t can be shown that the maximum temperature gradient that could exist between the oxide-metal interface and the center of the sample is of the order of O.Ol°C. The geometry and size of the specimen could certainly have some effect on the ignition temperature. The equation for ignition that has been proposed in reference 14 is of the following type containing terms to account for this and other factors: M dT AHv(T) =Cp--------------\-J(.T—TB) + ZAHl-M A dx where AH is the heat of reaction, v(T) is the velocity of the reaction at temperature, Cp is the heat capacity of sample, M is the mass of sample, A is the area of sample, t is time, J is the total coefficient of heat transfer outward from the reaction zone, TR is the temperature of the bath or furnace, and AH,, is the heat associated with any phase change involved. Prior to the instant of ignition, the vapor pressure of magnesium is of no special significance. After ignition, neither eq 4 nor the above equation is applicable. The actual combination of magnesium cannot safely be assumed to take place in the vapor phase. While experimental data is lacking to support a hypothesis that ignition does or does not occur in the vapor phase, some observation on the pressure ignition experiments may be of interest. At high oxygen pressures, once ignition has occurred, the reaction of magnesium with oxygen approaches near explosive violence, the entire sample being consumed in probably less than 1 sec. At atmospheric pressure it usually requires 15 to 20 sec. Thus it appears that the oxygen concentration becomes the rate determining factor. Further, if burning magnesium is observed through darkened glass (Lincoln Super-visibility Shade No. 12) the magnesium sample is very much hotter than the "smoke" and the outline of the sample is retained perfectly. No "flame" is visible above the metal. No work was done on Mg-Be alloys. We do, however, intend to study this problem in the near future.

MINING occupies a position of less importance than manufacturing or agriculture in Canada, but its relative contribution has increased greatly during the post- war period. Mineral production was only 5.14 per cent of the net value I of production of all kinds of commodities in 1919, but by 1936 the pro- portion had risen steadily to 12.76 per cent. Mining felt the depression, hut unlike agriculture, which is still ' sorely stricken, it has passed from early convalescence to complete recovery. For each of the last two years new high records were established for the industry as a whole and for the quantity of most metals produced. Mining has had a notable effect on - the growth of the power industry in Canada. Water power has been developed in the same or adjacent areas wherever mining camps have been 1 established, with few exceptions. Consumption of electrical energy by the mining industry gained 72 per cent within a decade, rising from 1604 million kw.-hr. in 1926 to 2754 in 1935. THE object of the writer is to call attention to a rather unique aggregation of economic products distributed over a line of succeeding formations about 3 mi. long, to be seen within a few miles of La Salle, Ill. Fig. 1 is an ideal section of the stratification exposed and exploited along a distance of 3 1/5 mi. in a southwesterly direction from the quarry of the Utica Hydraulic Cement Co. located near the historic site of Kaskaskia village to the Oglesby, shaft at Oglesby. No attempt has been made to cover the whole field, special mention only being made (with the exception of two places) of the operations found along the course or parallel to the direction assumed in the ideal section. I have used Fig. 2, after J. H. Bent and De Witt Kelly, to locate the relation of the La Salle anticline to the coal mines of this district and to show the operation of No. 1 and 3 mines of the Illinois Zinc Co.

CeRtain compositions of the light, i.e., aluminum-rich, alloys of aluminum with magnesium and copper have become quite well known within the past ten years under the name of duralumin. These alloys are used for rolling and forging and can be so treated as to develop quite remarkable mechanical properties. Thus a properly heat-treated alloy containing about 4 per cent. of copper and about 0.5 per cent. of magnesium, rolled into sheet or rod, will have a tensile strength of approximately 55,000 1b. per sq. in. (3866 kg. per sq. cm.) with an elongation in 2 in. (50.8 mm.) of about 15 per cent. EXCEPT for the material, the same method that you used in alloying gold is used in alloying silver, but its alloy is fine copper. Just as the silver does in gold, so copper in silver diminishes and lowers its fineness and increases its quantity. If half the value is surpassed it is no longer called silver but copper containing silver, as I told you of gold. But in my opinion one could also say silver of 5,4, or 3 leghe or even of one. Three titanium alloys, known to provide a mechanically unstable p structure after quenching, were selected as material for a study of the Origin and nature of stress-induced transformation. Data from hardness and tensile tests were used to study the initiation of marten site and the effect of the transfornation and transformation products on the mechanical properties of B titanium, particularly the stress-strain relationships. With the exception that the materials investigated showed a natural aging reaction in the P condition, their behavior is analogous to that of' stress-transforming stainless steels. The transformation starts after initial yielding and is essentially complete just prior to .maximum loading. Once initiated, the martensite itself is capable of propagating the transformation. The deforn-ing materials show low strength, high ductility, and a high strain-hardening exponent. In metallic systems which undergo a diffusionless transformation on cooling, it is possible to produce a similar transformatiorl by plastic deformation under special conditions. Dewez' in delineating Ms temperatures for the titanium-rich end of most titanium binary systems:, established the point of intersection of Ms with room temperature for those particular alloys. Alloy compositions which would quench to mechanically unstable p were established from these data. The first investigation into the possibility of stress-induced transformation occurring in titanium met with little success. It was concluded that such a transformation in titanium was possible only under very special conditions. Continued effort in this direction, however, showed certain Ti-Mo binaries to be highly susceptible to this phenomenon. This fact was utilized by Liu to study the habit planes of martensite and by Machlin and wenig5 to study the effects of stress and plastic deformation on the P to a prime transformation in titanium alloys. The first investigation of the mechanical properties of these alloys was conducted by Holden and his coworkers at Battelle Memorial Institute.' The potentiality of the alloys i3s sheet-forming material was recognized, and the data reappeared in a survey of this type of titanium material.? The initial optimism was tempered by the difficulties in obtaining homogeneous 2i-Mo alloys in commercial-size ingots. The increasing need for good sheet-forming material kept investigation in this direction active, resulting in the development of a commercial alloy of this type.' This study was undertaken to obtain a clearer picture of the mechanism of stress-induced transformation in titanium. MATERIALS AND TEST PROCEDURE Three alloys were selected for this investigation: one a Ti-Mo alloy; another a Ti-Cr-Mo alloy, known to deform martensitically; and the third, a Ti-V alloy with an Ms below room temperature and an Md above room temperature, but known to contain w phase in the quenched condition. The compositions of these alloys are given in Table I. These alloys were cast as 5-lb experimental ingots, employing skull melting. The ingots were hot-forged into 1-in.-round bars. Two 72-in.-thick slices were cut from each bar for hardness testing; the remainder was cut into 0.252-in. tensile blanks. The tensile blanks and one hardness disc from each bar were heated in salt to a temperature 100°F above the 0 transus, held 2/2 hr, and brine quenched. X-ray analysis showed the pieces to be 100 pct 8.* *Omega cannot be distinguished from p by the technique employed. Tensile blanks were machined to size after this treatment. The use of computing machines to solve physical problems has made it imperative to represent physical data in a form computing machines can use. Although curve-fitting is an old and well-practiced art, there still seems to be some interest in questions regarding what methods can be used and why. Even though there are many good references on this subject, it may be of some value to discuss a particular method which has been found to be useful, and to make available the associated tables for its use in the hope that there can be saved a few of the tedious hours necessary to reduce many of the suggested methods to practice. Although a very brief discussion of the mathematical background of the tables is included immediately below, those interested only in their use can skip directly to the section on Use of the Tables. Direct Fit of a Set of Points A frequently encountered problem is: Given data which can be represented by a smooth curve +(x), to find an easy-to-evaluate function F(x), with only a few coefficients, which is a good approximation of +(x) on the interval 0 5 x 5 x,,. Oil and gas activity reached a higher peak in Indiana during 1940 than for any like period during the past decade. Major activity, as during 1939, was in the southwestern part of the state, the Indiana portion of the Eastern Interior Coal Basin, where most of the increase was due to field drilling in previously proven areas. The amount of wildcat drilling was about the same as for 1939. No new fields of any apparent consequence were discovered during the year, with the possible exception of the College pool, in southwest Posey County. Only one well had been completed in this area at the end of the year. About 10 ft. of saturated Aux Vases sandstone was drilled in this well and the initial production was I00 bbl. of oil a day. Other discoveries during the year 1940 include: St. Thomas, in southwestern Knox County, where four McClosky wells, ranging from I00 to 300 bbl. a day initially, were com-pleted; Buff kin, in central Posey County, with 11 oil wells and 5 gas wells completed; and new developments in two old areas —Randolph County (part of the old Trenton field) and Gentryville, northwestern Spencer County, where some oil was found many years ago. The St. Thomas field proved disappoint-ing, with very spotty production from the McClosky horizon of the St. Genevieve limestone at a depth of about 1875 ft. The discovery well flowed 362 bbl. a day ini-tially. At the end of the year the field was pretty well outlined by dry holes and some inside locations were dry. The Buffkin pool also proved spotty, with production from shallow Pennsylvanian sands and from the Basal Pennsylvanian Mansfield sandstone, the latter at a depth of approximately I175 ft., with small production from the Cypress sandstone of Chester age. Oil wells in this pool are small, ranging from 25 to 75 bbl. a day. The Randolph County area, on the east side of the Trenton gas field, showed some promise for a commercial gas field, with four completed gas wells having cumulative initial flows of about 1,200,ooo cu. ft. a day. The area appar-ently was not depleted during the Trenton boom at the turn of the century, since casing pressures are about as high as the virgin pressure in the old field. Elsewhere the pressure has dropped as low as 5 pounds. The Griffin field received most of the drilling during 1940, with 163 completed oil wells. This field now covers about 3200 acres on the Indiana side of the Wabash River and is not as yet completely delimited. It produced the major part of Indiana&apos;s oil during the year—a total of 3,594,000 bbl. At the end of 1940, there were 253 producing wells in Griffin. New Harmony had five completions for a total of 24. The Rockport field, in Spencer County, continued to be actively developed and had a total of 45 gas wells and 9 oil wells at the end of the year. Oil in commercial quantities had not been found in the field previous to 1940. Total gas production for the year was 394,470,000 cubic feet. In all, 521 wells were drilled in the state during 1940, as compared to 377 for 1939. Of this number 248 were oil wells, 77 were gas wells and 196 were dry. Divided into

The area appar-ently was not depleted during the Trenton boom at the turn of the century, since casing pressures are about as high as the virgin pressure in the old field. Elsewhere the pressure has dropped as low as 5 pounds. The Griffin field received most of the drilling during 1940, with 163 completed oil wells. This field now covers about 3200 acres on the Indiana side of the Wabash River and is not as yet completely delimited. It produced the major part of Indiana&apos;s oil during the year—a total of 3,594,000 bbl. At the end of 1940, there were 253 producing wells in Griffin. New Harmony had five completions for a total of 24. The Rockport field, in Spencer County, continued to be actively developed and had a total of 45 gas wells and 9 oil wells at the end of the year. Oil in commercial quantities had not been found in the field previous to 1940. Total gas production for the year was 394,470,000 cubic feet. FREE energies of formation of zinc sulfide and magnesium sulfide had previously been estimated to an accuracy of ± 5.0 kcal per g mol. In the present work, these values were determined experimentally. As the determinations of the free energies of formation of zinc sulfide and magnesium sulfide presented different problems, separate experimental procedures were employed for each. ZINC SULFIDE It is difficult to measure the free energy of formation of either zinc sulfide or magnesium sulfide by measuring their decomposition pressures directly, as they are very stable compounds. An attempt was made by Jellinek and zakowski3 to study the equilibrium. zns(s) + H2(g) = Zn(g) + H2S(g) [I] They passed hydrogen over zinc sulfide and analyzed the gases leaving the reaction zone for H2S. They were unable to determine the true partial pressures of the H2S by this method, as some of the H2S on being cooled from the reaction temperature, reacted with the zinc in the gas to produce ZnS. Consequently, they were unable to establish any true equilibrium data for reaction [I]. More recently,&apos; the equilibria ZnS(sphaledte) + Fe (s) — FeS(s) + Zn(g) [2] and ZnS(sphalerite) + 2Cu(s) — Cu2S(S) + Zn (g) [3] were studied. As the standard free energy of formation of Cu2S is known to * 3.0 kcal, and of FeS to ± 1.0 kcal, it should be possible upon performing equilibrium studies on reactions [2] and [3] to deduce the standard free energy of formation of ZnS (sphalerite). However, as both of these equilibria involve 2 solid sulfides, and as it is possible for these sulfides to dissolve in one another, it is necessary first to ascertain the activities of the various sulfides in these solid phases.

THE rapid development of the Portland-cement industry implies that the country is being very carefully searched for material suitable for its manufacture. Such material can be found at a great many places ; but deposits thoroughly satisfactory in chemical composition, and at the same time meeting all the other requirements connected with the economic production and profitable marketing of the product, are exceedingly few, if I may judge from the investigations which I have had to make in a number of States. The raw mixture which by its clinking and grinding forms Portland cement contains approximately 75 per cent. of carbonate of lime. This is found in nature as limestone or marl. The natural rock commonly carries either more than the required percentage of carbonate of lime (in which case it has to be reduced by suitable admixture of clayey ingredients) or less-in which case purer lime carbonate has to be added. The controlling ingredient, therefore, is carbonate of lime, or limestone of the right composition. Among the most serious difficulties is that of finding limestones low enough in magnesia to meet the exacting requirements of certain specifications. All engineers recognize that there is a limit beyond which it is not safe to let the magnesia go; but within that limit there is considerable difference of opinion. Until that difference is finally settled, no one would be willing to invest the large sum of money necessary for a Portland-cement plant, if it were not certain that the usual requirements in this particular could be satisfied. The usual limit in well-established specifications is 5 per cent. of magnesium oxide in the finished cement, but many specifications limit the amount to 3 per cent. These figures

The effect of 1ow-temperature stabilization anneals on the structure of the 0 phase Au-Cd alloys and on the diffusionless transformations observed in these alloys was examined by X-yay diffraction techniques. A phase separation in the ß-phase region was proposed to account for the experimenta1 results. The effects of quenching from elevated temperatures on the transformation behavior of these alloys were shown to be consistent with the proposed mechanism. IT has been shown that the high-temperature ß phase (CsCl structure) of the Au-Cd alloy system transforms to a phase having an orthorhombic (D2) ß&apos; structurel1-3 for compositions near 47.5 at. pct Cd and a tetragonal (4/m, m, m) ß" structure* in the vicinity of 50.0 at. pct Cd. Both transformations are diffusionless, crystallographically reversible, and occur on cooling at about 60° and 30°C respectively. The temperature interval from the beginning to the end of the transformation is of the order of 5°C in each case. Although the transformations are normally athermal, some of them have been reported to occur isothermally.= wechsler6,7 has shown that the effects of quenching a 49.0 at. pct Cd alloy from elevated temperatures are consistent with the retention of a nonequilibrium number of lattice vacancies. Annealing of these quench effects results in a broadening of the X-ray reflections.8 After a suitable quench, the 47.5 at. pct Cd alloy transforms to a phase having not the p&apos; orthorhombic structure but another structure which has properties similar to that of the ß" tetragonal structure.5.9 This change in the type of transformation has also been obtained after long anneals in the ß-phase region at about 70oC10 The present investigation was primarily concerned with the structural changes accompanying the above transformation phenomena. The change in transformation product and accompanying physical changes during an anneal in the ß phase have been termed stabilization effects. Experimental Procedure —The results reported in this investigation were obtained with the use of a Norelco diffractometer fitted with a temperature-controlled cryostat. The specimen temperature was controlled to better than ± 0.l°C during the measurements. CrKa radiation monochromated electronically with the use of a scintillation counter and pulse height analyzer was utilized. Specimens containing 47.5 and 50.0 at. pct Cd were prepared by sintering filings obtained from homogenized ingots of the proper alloy composition. (Gold of 99.999 pct purity and cadmium of 99.98 pct purity were used). All heat treatments were carried out with the specimens capsulated in vacuum ( < 10 % mm Hg) or in a He-H gas mixture. The quenching technique used in these experiments was to drop the pyrex capsule which contained the specimen from the annealing furnace into water, the temperature of which was controlled. The pyrex capsule shattered on contacting the water resulting in a relatively rapid quench. After the heat treatment, the specimens were mounted in the diffractometer and were left undisturbed in the diffractometer specimen holder during each sequence of measurements. EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS A) Low-Temperature Annealing—The transformations which were considered "normal" for these alloys were those obtained athermally during furnace cooling at approximately 50°C per hr after an elevated temperature anneal. Under these experimental conditions, the specimens were observed to transform to phases having structures whose diffraction patterns could be indexed as the ß&apos; orthorhombic structure for the 47.5 at. pct Cd and as the 0" tetragonal structure for the 50.0 at. pct Cd alloys. The transformation temperatures on cooling were approximately 60" and 30°C, respectively. Under the "normal" conditions both transformations were observed to go to completion, i.e., the entire volume of the ß phase was transformed to the product phase. In some specimens an extremely weak ß 110 reflection was observed at 20°C indicating that a small amount of retained ß was present. The effect of low-temperature annealing on the nature of the diffusionless transformations was examined for the 47.5 and 50.0 at, pct Cd alloy. The specimens were annealed in evacuated capsules at temperatures in the vicinity of 600°C (as specified in Table I) for 24 hr and were then cooled to 100°C at a rate of 50°C per hr. The specimens were then removed from the capsules and mounted in the diffractometer without allowing the specimen temperature to drop below 80°C. Annealing at the low temperatures was accomplished in the diffractometer by means of the cryostat which was mounted around the specimen. During the low-temperature anneals the lattice parameter, integral breadth of the reflections, and ratios of the integrated intensities of the fundamental and super lattice reflections for the 0 cubic phase were periodically determined. After annealing for the required time, the specimens were slowly cooled in the diffractometer and the diffraction patterns were recorded as a function of temperature. It is common to blame irregular assay results upon volatilization and much has been written upon the subject, but there is no real evidence that, in a properly conducted assay, the loss of either gold or silver by volatilization is sufficient to affect appreciably the result, even when arsenic or antimony may be present. Bulk assays of flue dust from assay muffles have been published, but the data given are totally insufficient to even approximate the volatilization from a single assay; and such figures as we have indicate the volatilization to be extremely small. Diligent search in the literature and wide inquiry among assayers and instructors have failed to produce a single case where the litharge volatilized in making an assay has been collected and assayed for gold and silver. Having attempted to do this, with most indifferent success, I am not surprised that this has not been done. While various textbooks give volatilization as a cause of loss in cupella-tion, it may safely be said that in the rare cases where this volatilization is sufficient to affect appreciably the result it is due to excessive temperature. Percy&apos; says "The loss of silver by volatilization during cupellation is very slight (unless the temperature has been much too high), and may be disregarded." This statement is repeated by the Beringers2 and Smith,3 who includes gold with silver. Mitchell4 says the litharge fume rarely contains over one ten-thousandth of silver. Campredon5 ays that at a proper temperature no silver is lost by volatilization. Primarily, excessive temperature may be due to too high general temperature in the muffle; but it may often be due to temperature localized within the bead by oxidation of the metals and this may be influenced by other causes than the general temperature.
