TsunashiRo Wada, honorary member of the Institute, died at his residence, Ushigome, in Tokyo, on Dec. 20, 1920, at the age of sixty-four; he was born on March 15, 1856, at Obana in the province of Wakasa. An expert mineralogist, lithologist and geologist, he identified himself throughout his life with the development of the mining interest of this country. Perhaps the most noteworthy of his meritorious services in the public sense was the extension of the Imperial Steel Works at Yawata, anticipating the grim fate that hurled Japan. into a war with Russia in 1904. Educated in the Imperial University of Tokyo by foreign professors, he studied especially mineralogy, lithology and geology. In 1875 he was appointed assistant professor in the Imperial University of Tokyo, and in 1878 entered the service of the Home Department. From 1880 until 1893, Mr. Wada was Director of the Imperial Geological Survey of Japan, during which time he practically laid the foundation of the geological investigation work in Japan. In 1884, he made a trip to Europe by government order to attend the international Congress in Berlin, visiting en route several countries of Europe and America. While Director of the Survey, he was also, from 1880 to 1885, lecturer, and from 1885 to 1891, professor of mineralogy and lithology in the Imperial University, and, from 1889 to 1893, was Director of the Imperial Mining Bureau of Japan. In this capacity, he revised the mining laws of Japan, thus laying the foundation of Japan's mining administration. In 1894, he was again appointed lecturer in the Imperial University of Tokyo; in 1895, appointed Technical Adviser on Mines to the Imperial Household Department of Japan; and, in 1897, appointed President of the Imperial Steel Works, which was completed in 1900 with the expenditure of $10,000,000. In this capacity he did a great deal to promote the iron and. steel industry of this country. We owe him the ore-purchase contract with the Daiya iron mine in China, which remarkably facilitated the extension of the iron works in later days. The victory of the Russo-Japanese war must be said to be due to his merit in no small measure. He resigned the presidency of the Imperial Steel Works in 1901. In 1899, Mr. Wada visited America and several countries of Europe by government order; in 1902, he traveled through north and middle China doing exploration work and studying the geology of the country, accompanied by mining engineers and geologists. THE opening session was held on Tuesday evening, October 23d. Mr. J. F. Lewis, on behalf of the local committee of arrangements, made a short address of greeting to the members assembled, and then introduced Gov. A. H. Holley, of Lakeville, Conn. Gov. Holley addressed the Institute as follows : Gentlemen, we give you cordial welcome to a mining, manufacturing, and agricultural country, of which we are not a little proud. We welcome you as an association, and as individuals. We invite you to an inspection of our resources, and to our methods of improving them. We appreciate the results of your efforts in past years, and we anticipate good from your advice and counsel in the future. You are in the vicinity of some of the oldest mining and manufacturing operations in iron in our country. It will be our pleasure to conduct you to a mine which was worked for more than a half century before our country achieved national independence, and to point out to you the spot where the products of this mine were wrought into cannon and shot during the progress of our Revolution. We can show you also a far larger area of mining country than was supposed to exist in this vicinity at that early day. There are, within a radius of thirty miles from this spot, ten mines at least that have been extensively worked, and there are as many more that have been occasionally worked, with a fair degree of success. All the mines that are wrought to any extent produce excellent qualities of iron, while many of them in various combinations produce as good material for the manufacture of steel, car wheels, axles, and many other purposes, as can be found in any country. The old Salisbury iron retains its reputation for tensile strength unsurpassed, when made entirely from the ore of the old mine. The progress that has been made in the development of these mines since the days of the pickaxe, when the product was transported in pounds upon horseback, to those of the steam-engine, which now moves hundreds of tons per day, presents, indeed, a

If one holds up a prism, or wedge of glass, with narrow angle, say l° to 2O, and compares the transmitted image with the image seen above or below the prism, the former will be found to be thrown to one side by an amount varying with the angle of the wedge. Speaking of the two rays as the direct ray and the bent ray, we may say, that when the bisecting plane of the prism is at right angles to the line of sight, the angle between the direct ray and the bent ray will be constant for any given prism. If now we place a prism or wedge of glass in such a position that it half-covers the objective of a telescope, we shall obtain on looking through it two images of every object seen—one image by the direct ray, which comes through the unaovered half of the objective, the other which comes through the prism, and is the image by the bent ray. The angle of divergence of these two raps will be constant and unalterable, whether the telescope is directed to a near object, with its eye-piece at increased distance from its objective, or upon a ' distant object, with eye-piece nearer to the objective. That is to say, if the " throw " or apparent dislocation of the image is one foot in one hundred feet it will be two feet in two hundred, ten feet in a thousand, and so on. The usual form of stadia-telescope has at the focal point of the objective two spider-lines, placed at a definite distance apart and intended, let us say, to represent a throw of one foot in one hundred feet. But as the distance between lines remains the same, while the distance from the objective to the webs diflers with every variation in the distance of observed objects, it follows that the angle between the lines of sight which these two spider-lines define cannot be con stant, but must vary with every increase or decrease of distance be tween the instrument and the object viewed. The chemical reaction occurring in collection of nonmetallic minerals with amine-type collectors was early postulated by students of flotation phenomena to be metathesis between the mineral and the collector, involving exchange between the amine-bearing (aminium) ion and the cation of the mineral, and formation at the mineral surface of an oriented film of the amine salt of the mineral anion. Qualitative evidence of exchange has been obtained on several occasions at Columbia. Thus 1000 C.C. of a solution containing 495 mg of laurylamine hydrochloride was shaken 17 min. with 100 grams of barite and ground in a porcelain mill to pass a 200-mesh screen; the mixture was then set aside for 48 hr. Filtrate therefrom analyzed 476 mg. per liter of laurylamine hydrochloride. There was no substantial loss of chloride ion (78.4 mg. per liter in the original; 74 in the filtrate). No successful analyses were concluded for barium ion. Earlier, confessedly rough work with scheelite indicated a solution gain in Ca++ equivalent to about one-half the aminium ion lost. Real quantitative roof of the exchange, in the form of an established stoichiometric balance, is unknown to the authors. The data of the present paper, however, obtained from experiments designed on the basis of the exchange hypothesis, constitute strong evidence of its truth, and at the same time point the way to economic utilization of the expensive nitrogen-bearing collectors in concentration of the low-priced nonmetallic minerals. The basic postulate underlying the experiments performed was that, if the collecting reaction is of the type R+ + Y- + MX = RX + M+ + Y- where R = aminium ion, Y = the anion of the amine salt, and M and X are, respectively, the cation and anion of the mineral, the reaction should obey qualitatively the implications of the mass-action and solubility-product laws. This is to say that coating and collection should be aided by the addition to the solution of either ion (R+ or X-) of the collector-coating compound, and hindered by the addition of either of the ions M+ or y-. Experimental work comprised determination of (,) the relative solubilities of the laurylammonium salts of a variety of nonmetallic-mineral anions; and (21 the contact angles' of various minerals in solutions containing different concentrations of the postulated controlling ions. The Bauschinger effect, or rounding of the corner of the stress-strain curve upon reloading, represents a temporary apparent softness that is more pronounced at large strains than small and for complete unloading than for partial unloading. Interrupted creep tests on copper exhibit a similar temporary softness (high creep rate) upon reloading. The fact that the strainwise dying-out time of these effects is the same in both tensile and creep tests shows that they are related. Thus, the term Bauschinger effect appears to embrace behavior following partial or complete unloading and reloading in addition to behavior following reversed loading. It is suggested that the term may properly apply also to certain creep behaviors following a small load decrement. INTERRUPTED tensile tests at low temperatures show1 a rounding of the corner of the stress-strain curve for reloading, which indicates a temporarily low deformation resistance. In the absence of recovery, the curve soon rises to the value that would have prevailed if the test had not been interrupted. The rounding of the reloading tensile curve has sometimes been referred to1 as the Bauschinger effect, although the term is more commonly applied to low deformation resistance in compression following tensile prestrain. The unusually broad usage of the term Bauschinger eflect in ref. 1 seems justified by the obvious interconnection of the various behaviors to which it has been applied.' In fact, the following discussion will indicate that still broader usage might be desirable. The Bauschinger effect is common at room temperature but apparently disappears at higher temperatures.2 Interrupted creep tests and tensile tests were made on certified OFHC copper (nongaseous impurities exclusive of silver were 0.004 pct), cold drawn 84 pct to ½ in. diam, and annealed at 600" (about 0.025 mm grains) or 850°C (about 0.2 mm grains). The tests were made in standard creep or tensile machines, using an O.S. Peters microformer-type extensometer or, for the small plastic strains, a special arrangement employing General Electric magnetic gage heads.' Interrupted creep tests at room temperature show3,4 an initial softness after reloading, manifested by an initial creep rate that is higher than that which would have prevailed if the test had not been interrupted. Fig. 1 shows some typical examples. This effect is apparently temporary (as is that in tensile tests): in four of the five tests shown, the log rate vs strain curve becomes parallel to an

THE Butler Mine property is situated in the vicinity of Pittston, in the Wyoming coal-field of Pennsylvania. The coal has been worked out from the fourteen-foot or Baltimore vein for a number of years on part of the tract, the old chambers remaining open as when originally abandoned. This vein outcrops on the Butler property, and is nowhere more than sixty feet below the surface of the ground on the line of the cut-off to be described. Above the fourteen-foot vein and about, say midway, between it and the surface of the ground, there is another small vein or rider of coal, about twelve inches in thickness. The rock between the two veins is a carbonaceous slate, about twenty-five feet in thickness. Above the smaller vein is a bed of sandstone, varying in thickness, but generally not less than from eight to ten feet. This sandstone is also carbonaceous, but the proportion of carbon is much less than in the slate below. Both rocks have been analyzed, and before the next Institute meeting, the writer hopes to be able to furnish the exact proportions. The sandstone is overlaid with debris up to the surface of the ground. Some time during the spring of 1876, it was found that the coal left in the worked-out mine had been set on fire, and that the fire was gradually spreading. Inquiry developed the fact that the fire had originally been started by a woman, who had taken up her abode in an old tunnel leading into the workings. Owing to some delay in the early attempts made to extinguish the fire, it finally gained such headway that no ordinary means were found to be effectual. Finally, Mr. C. F. Conrad, civil and mining engineer, of Pittston, Penna., was called in as consulting engineer. He advised the making of a thorough cut through such portion of the old workings as had not been reached by the fire. It was found by survey that this cut could be limited to a length of about one thousand two hundred feet, as the vein faulted on both sides, and that the greatest depth of the cut would be about sixty feet. Subsequently it was decided to tunnel part of the way, thus saving the deepest portion of the cut. In 1856-7, there occurred a fire in the same mine. Two stone-walls in V-shape running from the apex of the V towards the outcrop, were built to cut the fire off, and these walls were carried as far as the vein had at that time been worked. Underground coal mine planning has traditionally focused on the mine design aspects concerning safety and efficiency in the quest to produce low cost coal. Very little attention has been given to coal quality control aspects of mine planning at most US underground coal mines. With the enactment of the Clean Air Act of 1970, the generally high sulfur content of coal has become a major concern for the coal-fired power plants in the east. Similarly, the ash and the Btu content of coal are equally important for boiler efficiency. Coal mine planning must incorporate coal quality control aspects as well as traditional safety and efficiency aspects. According to an article in Coal Age (March, 1982), nearly one-half of the US coal exported to Europe does not meet the contract specifications regarding ash, sulfur and Btu contents. Although one of the reasons cited for this problem was "inadequate sampling at the US ports," the more fundamental cause probably lies in the inadequate quality control of run-of-mine (ROM) coal at the source. To perform adequate quality control of ROM coal, mines need predicted short-term in-situ coal quality information. Such predictions are generally based on whatever available sampling information is around the mine workings. Unfortunately, the closest sampling information, in the form of diamond drill hole assays, is often several thousand feet away in most underground coal mines and is inadequate for short-term coal quality prediction purposes. This is because the diamond drill holes (DDH) were traditionally placed in the coal deposit during the mine development phase to determine coal seam continuity and overlying roof conditions. They were not placed for short- term mine planning. A study was undertaken by the University of Arizona for the Homer City Owners in Pennsylvania to show that there is a need for more closely spaced samples, if the short-term coal qualities are to be predicted with any "reasonable" degree of accuracy. Prior to this study, a short-term quality prediction model, STPM, had to be developed. This model uses not only DDH, but also other sample information obtainable during face development work to predict the qualities of in-situ coal that are available in the immediate future.

THE production of crude oil in Wyoming rose to 44,290,010 bbl. in 1923 and declined, during 1924, to 39,295,030 bbl., a decrease of about 11 per cent. The Salt Creek field supplies 75 to 80 per cent. of the production. Pipeline runs from the Salt Creek field reached a maximum in November, 1923, at a daily average for the month of 116,437 barrels. During 1924, the gas pressure in Salt Creek has declined rapidly and the production dropped to about 60,000 bbl. per day. Part of 'the decline during the last few months was due to lack of power to pump the wells. The electric-power plant of the Midwest Refining Co. did not begin to deliver current until the middle of December, by which time several hundred wells were off production. The cold snap in December, which brought, the temperature down to 30° below zero on the 17th, tied up operations almost completely and the average production for the month was only 49,545 barrels. As more wells are being pumped and the number of dead wells reduced, the production is rising and was up to 61,000 bbl. during the last week of January. A further increase is expected as the weather becomes warmer. The production of Salt Creek, by months, during 1924 is given in Table 1. An aluminum single crystal cold-rolled from (110) [1121 essentially retains its initial orientation after 99.6 pct reduction in thickness. The orientation of the recrys-tallized grains of this material can be described in terms of crystallographic rotations about principal poles of deformation texture. DURING the study of the recrystallization of a copper single crystal cold-rolled from a (110) [112] initial orientation, the orientation of the re-crystallized grains could be derived by a 30" rotation of the orientation of the cold-rolled matrix about its <111> poles.&apos; The present investigation was undertaken to extend the work done on copper&apos; to an aluminum crystal also cold-rolled from a (110) [112] initial orientation. Experimental Procedure The procedure of this experiment was similar to that reported for copper.&apos; An aluminum (99.998 pct) single crystal rod* 1 % in. in diameter was grown in back-reflection technique.&apos; The specimen (1.20x 1.004x0.6787 in. thick) was then rolled along the [112] direction. The final thickness was 0.0028 in., giving a reduction in thickness of about 99.6 pet. Specimens were cut from the rolled strip with scissors, and approximately in. of disturbed metal was removed with Tucker&apos;s reagent. The rolling edge remained intact. The specimens were sandwiched between two graphite plates and annealed in a lead or lead alloy bath which was electrically heated. Pole figures were constructed using the techniques previously described.&apos; Specimens were electrolytically polished4 and etched with 47 pct HNO8, 50 pct HC1, and 3 pct of 48 pct HF. The electrolytic polishing method and etching reagent employed for aluminum specimens were not entirely satisfactory and the microstruc-tures could not be studied in any detail. Results and Discussion The octahedral pole figure of cold-rolled aluminum strip is plotted in Fig. 1. The <111> poles spread in the transverse direction approximately 8" for the highest intensity areas. The spread in the transverse direction can be related to a rotation about two <110> directions lying in a plane containing the rolling direction and rolling plane normal. The two <110> directions and a scale of rotation for the <111> poles are shown in Fig. 2. The amount of rotation is consistent for three of the four <111> poles, about 35" to 40". The discrepancy for the fourth pole is believed to be due to limitations of the film technique. Alternate inter-

At the meeting of the Board of Directors of this Institute on Feb. 16, 1915, the 14 members of the Board present unanimously elected Professor Kemp an Honorary Member. The nomination of Professor Kemp was signed by 21 members of the Institute, none of whom are members of the Board of Directors, and recited his qualifications for Honorary Membership in the following terms: Professor Kemp graduated from Amherst College in the class of 1881, and from the School of Mines, Columbia University, in the class of 1884. After serving as instructor in geology in Cornell University for a few years he was called back to Columbia as adjunct professor in 1891, was made full professor the following year, and has since filled that office with dignity and honor. Among the first to recognize they importance of igneous rocks in the formation of orebodies, his studies have contributed greatly to that increase of knowledge of economic geology in which the Transactions of the Institute has had an influential part, and he is recognized both abroad and in this country as one of the most distinguished scholars in geology which America has produced. This recognition is evident in the honorary degrees of Sc. D. conferred on him by Amherst College in 1906, and LL. D. conferred by McGill University in 1913, as well as by election to membership in the National Academy of Sciences, and a corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of. Christiania, and the Geological Society of. Stockholm. Professor Kemp was a Manager of the American Institute of Mining Engineers from 1896 to 1898, Vice-President from 1903 to 1904, a Director from 1905 to 1912, President and President of the Board of Directors in 1912, and Past President since that time. During these years he has labored loyally for the upbuilding of the Institute, serving on many committees, as well as in the offices enumerated. He has also served as President of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the New York Academy of Sciences, and on the governing board of the Geological Society of America and the New York Botanical Gardens. His service is not confined, however, to these labors for the good of the profession and his contributions to exact knowledge of geology. In his almost 25 years as a professor in Columbia University there have come under his influence a great group of young men in whom he has inspired unflagging zeal in the search for truth, and to whom he has set an example of unselfish service. The value of such a service cannot be overestimated and in electing him to Honorary Membership the Institute would officially recognize the measure of appreciation which his professional colleagues have long accorded to him.

The mining laws relating to winding-ropes in some of the German provinces are very strict, and severe tests have to be periodically made to see that the ropes in use come up to the prescribed standard. A few notes on the method of testing the ropes and the results obtained may be of interest to the members of the Institute. Permission must be given by the Inspector of Mines to put up a winding-plant; and previous to installation a full report made by the manager, clearly setting forth all details of the shaft, the pit-head, engines and appliances appertaining thereto has to be sent to the mining officials. Accompanying each subsequent report, further details, such as the name of the firm supplying the rope, construction, quality of steel, date of installment, weight per meter, length, particulars of the safetycatches, cages, etc., must be given. At least one spare rope must be kept at ever? shaft ready for use in case of emergency. The rope must hang in the shaft, with cage attached, not less than twenty-four hours before it is used for winding; and it must have undergone a severe test in the manner hereafter described. The laws prescribe that when a rope is continually in use it must be tested every three months; but if the rope is only used every few days it must be tested at least every six months, in the presence of the superior officer; and notification of the date of testing has to be sent to the Bergrath two days before the test is made, in order that he can personally superintend the operation if he chooses. Should winding have been stopped for a long time, it is not necessary to test every six months; but before the rope can be used again it must be tested.

RESEARCH is defined, scientifically, as a "sys- tematic investigation of some phenomenon, and also a search for hidden treasures." Chemists tell us that the hidden treasures of petroleum are far richer than the .products which have been best known to us. However, these secrets will be discovered only through intensive and systematic, as well as scientific, industrial research. Indeed, the scope of the subject is so great that such an intensive research program should be assumed by a centralized organization supported by the petroleum industry as a whole. Such organization would assume the responsibilities for investigation of new products and development of markets for such products. Gasoline, the chief product of the petroleum industry, has become a cheap commodity. The continual un-controlled overproduction of crude petroleum, the in-tensive competitive condition in the marketing of petro-leum products and the increase of refining efficiency and installing of cracking facilities, have all combined to lower the market value of gasoline. The lower cost of gasoline has all been passed on to the purchaser in the form of lower prices so that today the most important product can scarcely be manufactured at a profit. In other fields, manufacturing industries have diversified their products when faced by a similar situation. Thus, they have been able to widen their marketing outlook. Why cannot the petroleum industry employ the same tactics ? Right now we are hearing much discussion concerning the development of a wider market for existing petro-leum products and new products for existing or prospec-tive markets. For instance, we can cite recent develop-ments for use of propane, butane, and ethylene. Butane has been found to be an efficient and inexpensive re-frigerant, especially adapted to home refrigerating sys-tems. Propane and butane fractions of natural gasoline may be shipped under pressure and may be used as a substitute for acetylene in cutting torches in connection with oxygen. There is a possibility of substituting butane for gas oil in the carbureting of coal gas, as we know that butane contains practically the gas enrich-ment as the same volume of gas oil and should prove to be a superior product for this function. Ethylene, a hydrocarbon present in cracked gases, is finding an outlet for the artificial ripening of green fruits. The following table . shows the more general use of petro-leum products as now established.

In the science of evolution of the species, there is a law which, simply stated, avers that the history of the individual repeats the history of the race. Similarly, if unassisted by the experience of others, each SUCcessful engineer would perfect and develop his methods and technique from the rough grab sample up to the carefully taken, recorded and studied samples and observations which now determine and decide the expenditure of the large sums required for modern mining. Hence real progress results from the interchange of experience, as in that way the entire experience of the profession can be made available to every engineer. The literature of this subject is already voluminous, but some progress has been made in the gathering of data and in their compilation or presentation. More Romance than Developed Ore in Limestone Deposits In certain types of deposits, methods little known 25 yews ago have been developed, perfected and standardized to a degree that lifts sampling from the field of manual labor to the plane of an applied science; for instance, the modern methods of estimating the so-called porphyry coppers. With some types of orebodies, we have become familiar, and sometimes on too easy speaking terms, with millions of tons of ore in reserve and tens of millions of dollars; while with others even these once marvelous figures sink into insignificance before the array of ciphers that are presented. .In such company, the average limestone replacement orebody is entirely out of place, for its reserves seldom reach a figure to arrest the attention of the modern engineer, and more often are insignificant. It is only when the records of the production of some of the older camps are studied, which show them to have continuously produced over very extended periods, that a realization is borne home that occasionally this type is worthy of consideration even in these days of gigantic tonnage.

EARLY this year the Board of Directors announced that, through the generous gift of past-president W. L. Saunders, a gold medal to be awarded for distinguished achievement in mining had been estab-lished. At the December meeting of the Board the medal committee reported that it recommended that the first medal be awarded to David William Brunton for "development and exposition of the principles and prac-tice of ore sampling; for systematic daily mapping of mine geology; for the Brunton mining compass; and for engineering achievements in connection with great tunnels." The formal presentation of the medal will be at the din-ner, on Feb. 16, in connec-tion with the annual meet-ing. Mr. Brunton, like several other prominent Institute members, was born in Can-ada, and came to the United States when he was twenty-four years old. He had then been in civil en-gineering work for three years and after a year more of it, deciding that mining was more attrac-tive he spent two years at the University of Michigan doing advanced work in geology a n d chemistry. His first mining engage-ment was with the Dakota and San Juan Mining Co., at Mineral Point, Ouray County, Colo. That was in June, 1875, and the young engineer had to travel 230 miles by trail from the then nearest railroad station at Pueblo. Having to come out because the company did not get in enough supplies to last through the winter he became metallurgist for the Hunt, Douglas & Stewart Co., at Georgetown, Colo. When the Hunt and Douglas plant proved a success, H. A. Taylor, the father of Mr. Brunton&apos;s later partner, Frank M. Taylor, engaged him to build the Clear Creek Reduction Works. Eighteen months later he built the Native Silver Mining Co. mill at Caribou and a year later a mill at Silver Peak, Nev., that was so successful that the principal owner shut it down to freeze out the minority stockholders. The winter of 1879 found him at Leadville where he did engineering work for the Robert E. Lee, Duncan, Wolftone, A. Y. & Minnie, and Dinero mines, eventually becoming manager of the Colonel Sellers. In 1886 he was called in on apex-side-line litigation at Aspen with the result that he went there to develop the mines for economic and legal pur-poses, and later became the manager of three of them. ONE of the features of the annual meeting was a round table conference on carbon in pig iron, on Feb. 16. This was presided over by R. H. Sweetser, and the discussion, which was so interesting as to require holding an additional session in the after-noon, ranged over such a wide field that only a brief outline of it will be attempted here. The full discus-sion together with the papers will be printed later. The first paper was one on the need for research in foundry pig iron (1648-C) by Richard Moldenke, who pointed out the trend in present practice of attaining low cost in pig iron production by hotter blast, addi-tion of. scrap to the blast furnace, and. the enormous increase in the output per furnace day. He pointed out that remelting processes are oxidizing processes, to some degree at least, and the metal cannot be given the deoxidizing finish which is characteristic of the steel-making process. The trend today is toward specifying total carbon content in foundry pig irons, and since the carbon content depends on a variety of factors, he suggested that the blast-furnace men and the foundry men study the question and agree on a minimum of total carbon for the given silicon ranges. The discussion of this paper was participated in by E. J. Lowry, Robert Jones, T. L. Joseph,. R. H. Sweet-ser, J. G. Ferguson, W. B. Coleman, E. P. Ross and D. J. Demorest and ranged from a comparison of the total carbon used in making a ton of pig iron in charcoal practice versus coke practice to a discussion of the bad effects observable from the use of scrap This paper was followed by one on carbon character-istics of copper-bearing pig iron by W.. B. Coleman. In view of the belief in many foundries that copper-bear-ing pig iron made trouble in the foundry, experiments were made by adding copper in various amounts up to 1 per cent and with the cooperation of the Robesonia Iron Co. a large number of tests were made over a run of foundry iron. The final conclusion was that the ad-dition of less than 1 per cent metallic copper did not seem to alter the physical properties and that a blast furnace using copper-bearing ore can produce pig iron suitable for making small castings, showing low-Brinell hardness test, good transverse and deflection tests, and high-total carbon.

It is particularly interesting at this time to notice the recommendations of F. L. Bishop, clean of the University of Pittsburgh School of Engineering as to the types of engineers required and the training that should be given each type. Dr. Bishop&apos;s recommendations, which follow, are substantially the same as the first two recommendations made by resolution at the National Conference recently held to discuss commercial engineering problems. This provided business training for the engineer arid engineering training for commercial enterprises. Dr. Bishop says: "The first type is that of the man who may be called a technician, who is highly trained in science and mathematics, who possess the instinct of the research man and who can devote his entire time to highly technical research problems, either in the research laboratories which are now rapidly being developed in the large industries, or by applying the results of his research to engineering science. For the training of this type of man, there is needed the best of scientific equipment, the members of the faculty must be those who are intimately interested in research problems, and the student himself must have what is sometimes called a mathematical mind. It is doubtful if this type of nan can be developed in a four-year course under existing conditions. In fact, it is probable that such a man can be developed only M. a school which has a thorough graduate department. "The second type which seems to be demanded by the industries is the man who has a broad general knowledge of engineering subjects and can apply that knowledge in an effective way in present engineering problems. He must have ability to command men, a knowledge of the applications of economic principles to industries, and a broad training in the so-called humanities, since he is the man in contact with men of other types in other fields of human activities. He should not be a research man, his training in mathematics need not be of necessity so extensive as that of the research technician, but his understanding of engineering problems should be extensive. Such a man cannot be trained in the ordinary schools because of the artificial conditions which of necessity exist in academic institutions. He must become familiar with the industries while yet, a student in order that he may understand thoroughly the application of his theoretical courses in school and their application to industries, and also that he may become familiar in the formative period of life with the problems of labor and the human factor in engineering. It is in the development of this type of man, who is to become. the manager and operating head of our large manufacturing industries, that the advantages to be derived from the cooperative system of engineering education are needed."

INTRODUCTION Requirements for achieving economic slope stability in open pit mining must not only be met during the operating stages but in all preceding stages of mine development. In many operating mines little or no emphasis was ever placed on evaluating the stability of possible slopes during the exploration and planning stages. The purpose of this discussion is to emphasize the necessary considerations that should be made in all stages of development in order to achieve the safest and most economic pit slopes. The most economic slopes may not always be the safest slopes and it is incumbent upon the mine operators and engineers to achieve an optimal combination of economics and safety. The stability requirements outlined are based on the profit motive and are, therefore, practically oriented. Long-term basic research or theoretical studies are considered important only to the extent that they can be shown to have a definite payoff. Consideration will first be given to the information required for stability analysis, which can be determined during the exploration and evaluation stage, followed by further stability work necessary during the mine planning and layout stage. Particular emphasis is then placed on the operating stage in which blasting, dewatering, artificial stabilization, and slope failure are discussed. Lastly, the importance of a logical and orderly research procedure is stressed. EXPLORATION AND EVALUATION STAGE The purpose of the exploration and evaluation stage in the mining scheme is to find and delineate a potential orebody. Discovery and delineation commonly involve drilling tens and in many cases hundreds of boreholes. These boreholes, which may cost as much as $20.00 per foot of depth for a cored hole, are usually abandoned once drilling is completed. Stability evaluation for a potential open pit should begin at this stage by taking advantage of the existing boreholes. Rock and soil properties, as well as hydrologic parameters, may be obtained from both the borehole and the core. Seismic velocity and neutron probes may be used to log the borehole to obtain elastic moduli data. A borehole dilation jack may also be used to give backup information on the rock and soil elastic parameters. Use of a core orientation system can result in the determination of fault and joint frequency and distribution. Before splitting or otherwise disturbing the fresh core, qualitative evaluation
