It is often desirable to perform fatigue studies at relatively high strains and at low strain rates. A low-cost fatigue machine has been constructed for this purpose which has proven quite versatile. This machine is based on the principle of repeated bending of a strip sample over a shaped mandrel. A photograph of a group of fatigue tests in progress is shown in Fig. 1. The test sample is held in place between two shaped mandrels having a flat at their base to grip the sample firmly. A cam-driven loading frame is used to bend the sample alternately over each mandrel. The sample slides freely in this frame and is held in place by a light spring to accommodate increases in sample length. The pivot point for the loading frame is selected so as to minimize movement at the loading point during operation. The number of cycles to failure is recorded by a rachet counter which is kept in operation by a series electrical connection through the sample and is operated by the drive cam. The maximum strain imposed at the sample surface on bending from one mandrel to the other is readily calculated from the relationship, where t is the sample thickness and r is the radius of curvature of the mandrels. The rate of straining can be controlled by control of the cam speed. The device as shown in Fig. 1 is set up to run six samples at ambient temperature. A much larger number of samples can be run at one time without difficulty. ALSO-, by slight realignment of the components the mandrel unit can be enclosed in a separate chamber permitting control of test temperature and environment. This permits a variety of fatigue and corrosion fatigue problems to be studied.

The object of this paper is to reduce to the simplest possiblc discussion the recent developments in refinery technology without resorting to detailed technical descriptions of the various items. During the year 1929, the most noteworthy tendencies have been towards the installation of more flexible plants, more unified operations, more balanced performance and greater fuel economy. In no other year in the history of petroleum refining has the industry witnessed to as great a degree the crystallization of so rnany developments in almost every phase of the art. Economic pressure has been the controlling factor, supplemented however by a market demand for more volatile anti-knock gasoline and higher quality of lubricating oils, resulting from the extended use of high-compression motors. Catalytic Hydrogenation Possibly the outstanding achievement during the year has been the beginning of construction of plants by the Standard Oil Co. of New Jersey for the catalytic hydrogenation of the so-called heavier and inferior petroleum oils to produce therefrom not only high yields of anti-knock gasoline, but also lubricating oils equal in quality to the best grades obtainable. It is reported that the plants will operate at a pressure of 4000 lb. or higher and temperatures in excess of 900" F. will be used. The hydrogen required for the conversion will be produced from refinery gases. This type of processing will doubtless be an important factor in balancing future operations; in other words, it can be used to eliminate present waste products and permit production of high-grade products from low-grade crude. These may be grouped into three general methods: 1) precedent, 2) instrumentation, and 3) theoretical analysis. The first two are covered in the literature where their advantages, as well as limitations, are discussed.'9' Generally a theoretical approach combines structural geology with engineering mechanics. The former deals with the geodynamic causes of residual stresses (stresses not related to overburden weight) and presents interesting, but controversial, views.'" A general and useful conclusion, however, can be drawn - vertical residual stresses are much less prevalent than horizontal. The drilling for and production of crude oil in the Lima-Indiana and Michigan fields were directly and profoundly affected by the severe strain to which the petroleum industry was subjected during the year 1931. Serious and long-continued overproduction in the large flush areas of the western and southwestern fields, coupled with a nationwide decrease in the annual rate of consumption-increase, served to precipitate ‡ This curve is the Mid-Continent price for 38" gravity crude and hence. affords a basis for estlmating the influence of general factors upon the price structure m these fields. a mid-year economic depression which was functionally reflected in every producing area in the United States. A study of the curves of price changes in portions of the central west territory (Fig. 1) will demonstrate this relationship as well as the ensuing upward trend, which developed when pressure was artificially relieved, at least for the time being, in the producing areas in the southwestern states. During the driving of the main haulage level at the Copper Mountain mines of the Canada Copper Corpn., Ltd., near Princeton, B. C., some very rapid driving was done, though no claim for a world's record is made. Conditions, however, were unfavorable for economical operations. The cost of power was high, for the fuel was of poor grade; besides, during the time the work was in progress, very little other power was needed so that most of the power cost was charged against the footage. The transmission line consisted of No. 4 galvanized iron wire with the result that the line lass was considerable. The voltage transmitted was about 30,000. The plant was operated under a lease, which was due to expire about the same time this work was supposed to be completed; an extension was refused, therefore speed was most important. The plans called for a straight adit 2900 ft. (884 m.) in length. At a point 2800 ft. (853 m.) from the portal, two raises were to be put up to the next nearest workings, a difference in elevation of about 800 ft. (243 m.). One of these was to be a two-compartment hoistway and the other a zigzag ore pass, or muck run. A location for these raises had been determined by a number of diamond-drill holes, but the material to be penetrated by the adit was not known. The overall success of many strip coal mining operations depends primarily upon the efficient use of draglines to remove overburden. These machines require enormous capital investment and unless used efficiently the profitability of a venture is adversely affected. It is important that the dragline works continuously and it is imperative that the walking path and other facets of its operation be predetermined exactly so that the desired production rate is achieved with a minimum of non-productive time. Details of dragline operations which are of particular interest are walking path, prediction of best cut and positioning to maximize production, the angle of swing which produces the swiftest operation, optimum fill factor allowable for the type of material and conditions of ground, the maximum depth from which it can excavate and operating level with respect to the elevation of the high wall. The aims of the present paper are: 1. To establish a cut-off point in the cost-depth ratio. 2. Predict the most economic method of stripping in a given area using graphical plots of walking path implemented with information necessary to ensure optimum production. The optimum operating efficiency of the dragline in relation to the terrain and other conditions imposed on its operation will be evaluated. The model is based upon operating data which has been collected from site observations of a large strip coal mining operation in Central Queensland, Australia.

He was successively employed by the Morse Chain Co. as metallographist, by the Baltimore Copper Smelting and Rolling Co., as chief of the testing department of the Bureau of Aircraft Production, as assistant engineer of tests of the Aluminum Castings Co., and as chief of the metals branch, engineering division, U. S. Air Service. Since 1923 he has been with the Aluminum Co. of America, now as chief metallurgist.

SCHMIDT, Salt Lake City, Utah.-Any furnace that can make a chloridizing roast to yield an extraction of 92 to 93 per cent. and do this at a cost of less than 24c. per ton in a 10-ton unit opens great possibilities for the treatment of certain classes of ores. This cost does not include the salt and will be reduced to about 16 1/2c. per ton in the 35-ton furnace which are now being designed. On a trial run the roaster treated 9.6 ton: of Ontario stope fillings crushed to pass a ¼ -in. opening. The ore is well adapted to chlorination with the exception of insufficient sulphur and occasional days of high lime, but is not adapted to any other process The following is an analysis of the crude ore: Ag, 9.52; Au, 0.029 oz. Pb, 0.71; Cu, 0.11; SiO, 79.4; Zn, 0.57; S, 1.00; Fe, 7.9; Mn, 0.89 CaO, 1.20 per cent. The composition of the mix was: Per Cent. Fuel-oil, natural gas and coke oven gas, producing the higher temperatures of open-hearth current practice, have been gradually displacing producer gas the lowest cost fuel for open hearth operations. The lower temperatures of combusts on products from producer gas is caused by nitrogen dilution. Practical Application of Combustion Thermochemistry One pound of carbon burned to CO produces 3,960 B.T.U. and one pound of carbon burned to C02 produces 14,140 B.T.U. The second unit of oxygen uniting with gasified carbon (CO) produces (14,140 - 3,960) 10,180 B.T.U. which is (10,180 - 3,960) 6,220 B.T.U. more heat than produced by the first unit of oxygen forming CO by uniting with solid carbon. A review of the relative combustion heating values of commercial gaseous fuels reveals CO requires a minimum of air for combustion and because of minimum nitrogen dilution and the high thermal release from CO higher temperature combustion products are produced from CO than from natural gas or from coke-oven gas under similar combustion conditions. Inert nitrogen diluent lowers the calorific value of fuel gas and its diluting effect is cumulative in lowering the temperature of the products of total combustion. It is not only logical but practical in partial combustion, converting bituminous coal to gas, to generate the gas with reduced nitrogen dilution.

The production of crude petroleum of the Bacuranao field, Cuba, fell off rapidly because no new wells Mere drilled. In December 1938, the total was 15 bbl. per day. The estimated average from this serpentine field for the year is 20 bbl. per day. The Motembo area produced an estimated average of 160 bbl. per day. Production in July was 215,946 gal of gasoline, or 165 bbl. per day. In August production was higher because a new well in the concession, the Luisa Marcela, produced 189 drums the first day and required pit storage. The Atlantic Refining Company of Cuba started a deep test upon a long, narrow, surface-defined anticline 3 km. south of Remedios, a town on the north coastal plain of Santa Clara province, in December 1938. The Atlantic Refining Co. is doing extensive seismograph arid gravity-meter work in Matanzas arid Santa Clara provinces. The Shell company was rigging for a deep test in western Havana province at a location about 2 km. west of the town San Antonio dc los Banos New Petroleum Law More serious attention was given by some of the major oil companies to the development of petroleum in Cuba as a, result of the passage of a Petroleum Law ill that country on May 9, 1938. Under the old mining lam of Cuba, which gave no special treatment to petroleum, the usual provisions giving reasonably satisfartory guarantees to encourage investmerit of foreign capital were either entirely lacking or were 30 ambiguously expressed as to require legislative action. Under the new law, Government royalty is fixed at 10 per cent with the provision that it will be reduced to 9 per cent on crude petroleum that is refined in Cuba. Royalty to the surface owner is 1 per cent. A surface tax on a sliding scale from 10¢ to 406 per hectare per year is applicable to all exploitation concessions granted under the law or adapted to its provisions. So export tax is payable upon petroleum. Stability of taxation

WoRld consumption of petroleum and its substitutes in 1941, the amount of which obviously is largely conjectural, is estimated at 2,066,653,000 bbl. This is 48,689,000 bbl. more than the previous year and is an all-time high. Except for the United States, this figure does not include consumption for military purposes. Consumption in the United States also reached an all-time high during 1941, totaling 1,492,000,000 bbl., or 158,230,000 bbl. more than the previous peak year of 1940. On the other hand, it is estimated that civil consumption in countries outside of the United States decreased 109,541,ooo bbl. as compared with the previous year. Demand for military purposes and/or additions to stocks in countries outside of the United States is estimated at 304,507,000 bbl. during 1941, compared with 209,635,000 bbl. in 1940. This increase was due largely to blitzkrieg warfare on several fronts. especially Russia; entailing large expenditures of petroleum by both sides because of the immense area covered by the fighting forces, the long supply lines necessary and the intensity of the fighting. It is interesting to note in this connection that Axis-controlled countries, excluding Japan, had an estimated production of approximately 89,000,000 bbl. of petroleum and its substitutes in 1941. The peacetime consumption of these countries in 1938, for example, was about 183,000,000 bbl. It is believed that the minimum to which civil consumption could possibly be re-duced in wartime is 20 per cent of that of peacetime, which would call for a minimum consumption of 37,000,000 bbl. in these countries in 1941 for civil purposes. The classification and correlation of water analysis data presents many problems which can be solved by graphic methocis. The pattern system, a new type of graphic procedure described in this communication, is believed to have several advantages over older methods. Examples of the application, of the pattern system to the solution of problems encountered in petroleum production are given. INTRODUCTION Several graphic methods for presenting analytical water data have been developed and are now in use.1,2,3,4 It is believed, however, that a recently developed type of graph called the "pattern" offers several advantages over other methods. This system presents a better picture of the total salt concentration than is usual in such graphs. The effect of dilution or concentration has been reduced to a minimum, and at the same time distinction between various types of water has been improved. The system is extremely versatile, yet so simple it can be plotted on ordinary graph paper and adapted to almost any type of filing system. DISCUSSION The essential feature of the pattern system is the graph shown in Fig. 1. Horizontal lines extending right and left from a vertical line at zero form the graph. Positive ions are plotted to the left while negative ions are plotted to the right. The figure immediately beneath each ion gives the scale. Most oil field waters can be plotted on a scale where 100 milli-equivalents of sodium and chloride and 10 milliequivalents of each of the other ions are represented by one scale unit. Essentially all production for Peru came from the three established fields in coastal northwestern Peru (Fig. 1). These fields are known as La Brea-Parinas, Lobitos, and Zorritos, in order of importance. Together they produced 13,496,880 bbl., as compared with 15,838,605 bbl. in 1938. Zorritos Field.—Of the total production shown on Table 1, the Zorritos field was responsible for a relatively negligible amount estimated at 40,000 bbl. This small field, which is over 50 years old, was purchased by the Peruvian Government in the spring of 1939 from the Piaggio interests. The Government operated this field along with its near-by National Reserve areas, largely under supervision of Department of Mines officials, and the total production rate for both old and newa-areas was estimated to have increased by Oct. 1 to 166 bbl. per day. as compared with the 1938 average of 110 bbl. per day. Construction is said to have begun on a refinery that is to have a capacity of 1000 bbl. per day and is to include a gasoline-extraction plant, and on a pipe line to bring fresh water 20 miles from the Tumbes River. Lobitos Fields.—The Lobitos fields, some 70 miles south of Zorritos, produced approximately 2,650,000 bbl., or almost the same amount a* in 1938. La Brea-Parinas.—The International's La Brea-Parinas property, immediately south of the Lobitos property, produced 10,806,880 bbl., or 80 per cent of Peru's production. During the year 73 wells were drilled on the Estate, mostly in the semiproved area: 44 by rotary, 13 by cable and 16 by star rigs, as compared with 34 by rotary, 11 by cable and 20 by star in 1938. This paper discusses elementary laws pertaining to seismic reflection methods and presents a general and simple criterion for determining the direction of dipping of a reflection horizon from observational data of distance and time. The important development of practical geophysics and the successful results obtained in America, Germany, and other countries, caused introduction of geophysical methods of prospecting in Poland. Of all methods, seismic prospecting has proved most successful in the area of the Carpathian foreland, where new oil reserves are to be expected. Because of the great depth of the sedimentary column in that area, ranging sometimes over 2000 meters, it was obvious that only the seismic reflection method could give reliable information regarding the structural features of these strata at such a depth. During the experimental surveys it appeared that the complicated geological conditions of that area do not always allow prediction of the depth and the angle of dipping of reflecting horizons, and for that reason information about the inclination of a given horizon has great importance in the determination of subsurface structure. Therefore the problem arises of obtaining from seismic reflection data reliable information as to the direction of dipping of reflecting strata, without any previous knowledge of the average velocity and depth of geologic horizons under consideration. Reflection Seismograms The earth, being a nonhomogeneous medium, is composed of a series of layers, which differ from each other in their physical properties, particularly in their elastic coefficients. These variations in elasticity are the cause of refraction and reflection of a seismic wave. The number of wells drilled in Ohio in 1943 was slightly in excess of the number drilled in 1942. Compared with the average annual completions for the five years preceding, the year 1943 was short 11 per cent, hut the average initial volume of gas wells was considerably improved. In 1942 the average initial open flow per gas well was 668 M cu. ft., whereas in 1943 the average was 913 M cu. ft. Although no large gas-producing areas were discovered during the year under review, some 30 small pools were found in 17 of the counties of eastern Ohio. These new pools averaged about 300 acres each, and most of them were not extensions but were separate pools adjacent to older production. The Clinton sand furnished most of these discoveries, although six were from the Berea, one was Newburg, and three were shallow sands. No discoveries were made outside former producing counties, and there was no new development the Trenton area of western Ohio. The number of oil wells decreased from 181 drilled in 1942, to 170 in the year 1943. The production of Pennsylvania-grade oil increased 7644 bbl. The total Corning production, however, decreased 91,325 bbl. The present price of Corning-grade oil, $1.31 per bbl., is too low, in the opinion of the operator, to justify exploration. Until something is done in correcting the price level of Corning grade, the production probably will continue to decline. The oil industry in Ohio is making a concentrated effort toward increased production and improved methods of recovering Pennsylvania-grade oil, and a.s this report is written a research and engineering program is being formulated for the benefit and information of the various producers of that grade in Ohio.

The term "operational research" was probably first used to describe work started under E. C. Williams, now Director, SHAPE Air Defense Technical Center, late in 1937 or 1938, at the Bawdsey Research Station of the British Air Ministry, a laboratory center concerned with the development of radar equipment. After the practicability of the early techniques had been demonstrated, a large (for those days) program of development and installation was authorized. It was very soon realized, both by the Royal Air Force and by the scientists that almost as important as the gear itself was the way in which it should be used. Accordingly, it was decided that some scientists should cooperate to study the way in which the equipment should be deployed and operated in conjunction with the Royal Air Force. To distinguish this work from the normal work of a research and development establishment, the term "operational research" was coined. It merely meant at this time that this particular section of scientists was to be concerned with the use of the gear rather than with its technical development and it seemed natural to those concerned to adopt the word "operations" which has a specific connotation in the armed forces.' This method was later extended to peacetime business enterprise, government operations and other human activities. Operations research appears to have penetrated the extractive industries more slowly and less completely than other industries, the military, or the government. This may be due (1) to a difference in the attitude of management towards operations research, or towards research of any kind, for that matter; (2) to unsuitability of the extractive industries for application of the operations research method; (3) to inaccessibility of the data; (4) or to a lack of trained personnel who are interested in applying operations research to the mineral industries.

WoRld consumption of petroleum and its substitutes in 1941, the amount of which obviously is largely conjectural, is estimated at 2,066,653,000 bbl. This is 48,689,000 bbl. more than the previous year and is an all-time high. Except for the United States, this figure does not include consumption for military purposes. Consumption in the United States also reached an all-time high during 1941, totaling 1,492,000,000 bbl., or 158,230,000 bbl. more than the previous peak year of 1940. On the other hand, it is estimated that civil consumption in countries outside of the United States decreased 109,541,ooo bbl. as compared with the previous year. Demand for military purposes and/or additions to stocks in countries outside of the United States is estimated at 304,507,000 bbl. during 1941, compared with 209,635,000 bbl. in 1940. This increase was due largely to blitzkrieg warfare on several fronts. especially Russia; entailing large expenditures of petroleum by both sides because of the immense area covered by the fighting forces, the long supply lines necessary and the intensity of the fighting. It is interesting to note in this connection that Axis-controlled countries, excluding Japan, had an estimated production of approximately 89,000,000 bbl. of petroleum and its substitutes in 1941. The peacetime consumption of these countries in 1938, for example, was about 183,000,000 bbl. It is believed that the minimum to which civil consumption could possibly be re-duced in wartime is 20 per cent of that of peacetime, which would call for a minimum consumption of 37,000,000 bbl. in these countries in 1941 for civil purposes.
