"The Southern Cross mining district was discovered during the early rush of gold seekers over Montana following the discovery of gold in 1861. Placers were worked near the Atlantic Cable mine in 1866, and soon attention was turned to quartz lode mining. High grade ores were discovered in the North Atlantic claim, adjoining the present Southern Cross group. The early metallurgical treat¬ment of these ores was by means of arrastres, a crude form of amalgamating mill, illustrated on the page opposite. This old arrastre located by the roadside on Warm Springs creek, was built by Barker Bros. in 1879. Further discoveries overtaxed the capacity of this plant, and in 1875 Thomas' Stuart employed a contractor named Jeptha J. Corner to convert the old Wilson & Fifer sawmill located at the Big Spring into an up-to-date gold quartz mill. 'For this trans¬formation Corner received the sum of $1,400.00. The illustrations give a good idea of the nature of its construction. Practically no iron was used in the mill, excepting for the stamps, dies and cams and cam shafts. Whether or not the saving attained reached the limits of present day perfection is not known. There being no steam boilers available, the early prospectors believed in the principle of conservation of fire wood, water power was therefore used, generated by a ""direct-connected"" over-shot wheel. Water for power purposes was supplied by the nearby spring. History fails to record the tonnage treated in this relic of early Montana milling practice.The ores of the Southern Cross district have not proved readily amenable to mill treatment, but being largely composed of iron oxides, they are most desirable fluxing ores for smelter operations. The B. A. & P. Ry. extends into the district. Electric power is furnished by the Flint Creek 'station, three miles distant."

The compressing of gas into a partially depleted gas drive oil reservoir to bring the contents to a single phase miscible with gas is proposed as a process worthy of serious study. The compressed gas and vaporized oil would be recovered by cycling. This paper explores the Possibility of recovering oil from reservoirs of 6,000 ft or more by this method. INTRODUCTION Many new methods for increasing the recovery of oil from reservoirs are under consideration in the various research laboratories. One method which should be considered for recovering oil From partially depleted gas drive fields is to compress gas into the reservoir until the contents become a single phase miscible with more gas. Natural gas then may be cycled through the reservoir to recover the oil. This procedure ideally will eliminate the capillary effects of the liquid ill the porous media and should permit recoveries similar to those obtained in cycling operations, probably of the order of 80 per cent. This paper explores the information now available for the prediction of the performance of such a project and discusses the problems likely to be encountered in recovering oil by cycling. For many years dry natural gas has been passed through oil reservoirs to recover natural gasoline which would vaporize from the oil. Recently a process of recovering more of the high boiling hydrocarbons has been described by employing high pressures at which the heavier hydrocarbons have a higher volatility. Nevertheless. this reported method does not eliminate the differential nature of the vaporization process and capillary forces are still present in the reservoir. The process under discussion in this paper would minimize differential vaporization and would remove capillary forces which are responsible for low oil recoveries. Higher gas pressures are required to accomplish this removal of the miniscus, but it does not follow that more gas is required for oil recovery. The process is limited to reservoirs deep enough to permit the use of the required pressure — Probabably 6,000 it and deeper. DESCRIPTION OF THE PROCESS Briefly, the process is to compress natural gas into an oil reservoir which is partially depleted so that it has an oil saturation in the range of 40 to 60 per cent of the hydrocarbon pore space. The injected gas will pass through the channels formerly carrying gas to the wells to build up the pressure and dissolve in the oil phase. This injection will continue without production from the field until the reservoir reaches a single phase. If one were to select unique conditions such that the gas composition, the reservoir oil composition and the Per cent saturation would bring the mixture in the reservoir to the critical temperature and pressure simultaneously the phase behavior accompanying injection is shown by Fig. 1. The oil-gas mixture in the depleted reservoir has a critical temperature at C,. Addition of natural gas to the mixture will give a new critical temperature for each addition. Mixture No. 3 is shown to have its critical temperature at the reservoir temperature and reservoir pressure at P: the critical pressure. Under ideal behavior, the entire reservoir would be at iti critical temperature and pressure and the entire hydrocarbon content would be at a single phase. If the reservoir content were a binary system of methane and a heavy constituent. it would be miscible with more methane. However, for complex mixtures the critical locus does not confine the two phase region, and the dew point curves of Fig. 1 occur above the critical locus. INTRODUCTION As the title of this paper suggests, the author does not believe that risk can be managed. Rather, the objective is to identify the risk which will be present in a given venture and assess the level of that risk which is acceptable. More often than not, the risk which is present is subject to little or no modification. After identifying and measuring the risk a corporation will decide to accept it and proceed in such a way that it will be less exposed, or it will decide not to proceed at all. The exercise for a corporation is different only in degree from everyday judgements made by average people in average situations. However, that word "degree" means that it is considerably more complex on the corporate level. There is good reason for the additional complexity of corporate risk evaluation. The variables influencing a company's decision can be more numerous and the penalties for miscalculation much greater than those normally encountered by an individual. It should be understood that no analysis of risk, certainly not one as brief as the following, can do more than touch on some of the high points. Before examining the sorts of risk which affect the development and operation of specific mines, let us consider the broader aspect of the term with which mining companies, and all other business corporations, must deal. Companies must determine their long-term objectives and strategies within the context of a constantly changing world. To plot their direction they must attempt to read the future by seeking answers to questions such as: How will society evolve? Which businesses will thrive? In which of these should we place our emphasis? If a company hopes to be around five or ten years from now it must make the attempt to answer such questions in order to judge the impact of changing patterns in the evolving business environment. Information is available to allow the lessons of the past to be projected on the future. We have data on birth rates, economic booms and busts, patterns of conflict within and between nations, drought and other forces of nature as well as individual events which cannot be predicted, but which over time, do seem to occur in regular cycles. Ultimately the question "where will we be and what will we be doing a decade from now?" must be answered by one or more senior people with responsibility for the company's future. The compilation and interpretation of hard data by competent support staff, can only be used up to a certain point in determining future corporate strategy since there will be alternative possible futures and a high degree of risk will always remain. At this point those elusive qualities of experience, instinct, and - "gut feeling" - become important factors in choosing a long-term corporate direction. The goals of a company have a significant bearing on its attitude towards risk. This in turn dictates the "hurdle rate of return on investment" which a project decision-maker will require. The hurdle rate is the minimum-discount-percentage-rate applied to forecast cash flows to give a present value of zero to the All-Equity-Funded Investor. The feasibility study for a project is a fundamental tool in the management of risk. An experienced team has an established and well-understood set of ground rules for the preparation and assembly of a feasibility study. The necessary degree of conservation is built in at all levels of study data and, if the project is technically feasible, the hurdle rate becomes a catch-all measure of risk in a base-case project cash flow.

WILLIAM ("BILL") EMBRY WRATHER, recently elected to a second term as Director of the Institute, is widely known as petroleum geologist, gentleman, and scholar. Born in Brandenburg, Ky., he was early endowed with a Southern accent which has remained with him strongly flavored by his later life in the oil-fields of Texas and the Mid-Continent region, and only thinly concealed by a Middle Western burr acquired during his student days at the University of Chicago. After graduating there with the Ph. B. in 1908, young Wrather (the adjective still fits!) joined the Gulf Production Co. Soon afterwards he married a charming Chicago girl, Alice Dolling, who, with their two daughters, has been his companion on many of his more distant trios.

Certain minerals possess inherent color and other properties that make them suitable for the pigmentation of paints, mortar, plaster, concrete, face brick, and other materials. Their production is one of the most ancient of mineral industries and their use by primitive man is well known. These natural pigments have some economic factors in their favor, particularly wide geographic distribution, low cost of production, ease of preparation, chemical stability, and permanence in use so that they continue to form the basis of a small but useful industry. When used in paints such pigments act as a filler and supply body and opacity in addition to color. Natural mineral pigments are prepared for the market by the comparatively simple operations of washing, grinding, blending, and calcining. Any one, or all of these processes may be applied to a single pigment. The development of synthetic pigments and the use of byproduct materials have introduced competition with the products of nature and are having a growing influence on the economic position of the mined minerals. Development of the Industry The industry developed to commercial stature in Pennsylvania largely because of the presence of beds of ocher extending from Easton in a southwesterly direction toward Reading, and a variety of small iron mines in the region. The mining of paint ores in the Lehigh Valley was active as early as 1850 and shortly after the Civil War the establishment of mills expanded production and led to the development of new products and eventually the manufacture of synthetic pigments. Pennsylvania continues to maintain it.s leadership as a producer of mineral colors. Production is recorded also in New Jersey, Illinois, Virginia, Ohio, and Georgia. Iron as a Pigment Iron in various compounds is the most important pigment in nature. The iron pigments are characterized by stability, light fastness, good covering power, high index of refraction, and economy in production. Ferrous compounds display a typical green coloration. This has not been employed as a commercial pigment to any great extent except incidentally in such greenstones as have been used in construction, or crushed and sized for application as a granule to roofing. Ferric oxides are characteristically red and form an important group of industrial pignents. Hydrated ferric oxides exhibit various shades of yellow and are present in such familiar pigments as ocher and sienna. The addition of small amounts of manganese oxide or carbon as organic matter to the yellows produces the brown umbers. Magnetite is one of the few black minerals that grinds to a black powder. The mineral pigments vary from earth colors of low intensity and great dilution of iron content to almost pure iron compounds with high tinting strength and correspondingly greater value. There has been some relationship between the mining of iron ores and the production of mineral pigments; although the production of colors is not carried on appreciably as a byproduct of iron mining. A number of mineral pigment producers, particularly in the eastern states, have operated mines which in the past were small producers of hematite, bog ore, or carbonate ore. The knowledge of the location of the deposit and its possibilities as a producer of pigment are due to its past history as a producer of metallic ore. Many iron compounds may be changed in color by calcination, the end product being Fe2O3, a stable red oxide. The yellow hydrated oxides may be changed to red. The gray carbonate, found in Carbon County, Pa., calcines to a fine red product. Ferrous sulphate (copperas) often available in tonnage as a byproduct of the steel industry, breaks down under heat or chemical action leaving a residual red oxide. Pigments produced by calcination or dissassociation of compounds possess the advantage of fine particle size and ease of grinding. This chapter deals with those types of silica raw materials that have been segregated and refined by natural processes into nearly monomineralic deposits and hence, by virtue of their high degree of purity, have become the sources of commodities having special and somewhat restricted commercial uses. In some instances, these raw materials occur in nature as unconsolidated quartzose sand or gravel and can be exploited and used with very little preparation and expense. More often, they occur as sandstone, conglomerate, quartzite, quartz mica schist, or massive igneous quartz which must be crushed, washed, screened, and sometimes chemically treated before commodities of suitable compositional and textural characteristics can be successfully prepared. The occurrence and distribution of silica raw materials is summarized and an effort has been made to bring commodity definitions, critical properties, and specifications up to date. Presentation of mining and processing methods is considered beyond the scope of this article; they are, for the most part, conventional and well known. New production techniques are currently reported in the trade journals and are later adequately described in technical publications as promptly as competitive restrictions allow. Discussion on Basis of Use ABRASIVE USES Industrial silica used for abrasive purposes falls into three main categories: (a) blasting sand; (b) glass-grinding sand; and (c) stone-sawing and rubbing sand. Blasting sand is a sound closely-sized quartz sand which, when propelled at high velocity by air, water, or controlled centrifugal force, is effective for such uses as cleaning metal castings, removing paint and rust, or renovating stone veneer. It is commonly referred to as Sand Blast sand. Multicycle quartz sand is an efficient blasting agent by merit of its survival characteristics which are soundness, toughness, and hardness. Steel grit and shot have supplanted it to a large extent but owing to their higher cost and tendency toward deterioration in storage, are still not universally used. It is conceded that angularity promotes faster cutting but this is offset by a higher loss in fines. The peening action of a rounded grain is a desirable feature in achieving a satin finish for certain light metal castings but a subangular grain is unsurpassed for fast heavy cutting. Specifications are chiefly based on size frequency distribution but it is mandatory that the grain be free of adhering clay or irony coatings. Material that dusts upon handling will not be tolerated. There is no uniform trade designation for the many blasting sand grades. Most producers sell on the basis of numbered grades; that is, No. 1, No. 2 and so on, this generally connoting fine to coarser grades. Designation of grade by the two sieve sizes between which most of the material lies, is practiced in some areas. Thus, in a No. 1220 grade, 98 pct of the material passes a 12 mesh sieve and is retained on a 20 mesh sieve. Blasting sand specifications vary according to use. Coarse grades range from 4 mesh to 12 mesh, medium grades range from 12 mesh to 30 mesh, finer grades may range from 20 mesh to 100 mesh or finer. THE rate of flotation of solid particles determines the percentage recovery of these particles which can be obtained during a given time interval. It is an established fact that the recovery is greatest in the fine sand size range and falls off on either side of this size range. It is also a fact that the history of the development of concentrating devices has been marked by a desire to recover the small particles: tables were developed to treat material too fine to recover in jigs; flotation recovers material too fine to be recovered on tables. As our ores become more complex and require finer grinding, a greater proportion is in the slow-floating size range. It is therefore of economic importance that the effect of size of particle upon rate of flotation be studied. Many studies have been made along this line. The present investigation attempts to quantify the rate of flotation by means of a rate equation, and then compares the effect of size upon the rate of flotation. It was found that the flotation rate constant increases with increase in diameter of particle in the size range smaller than the optimum size particle. The flotation rate constant decreases with an increase in diameter of particle in the size range coarser than the optimum size particle. This suggested two different actions taking place, and these are discussed. Suggestions for further work in order to improve the flotation rate of both fine and coarse particles are made. The usual method of expressing rate is to plot cumulative percent recovery vs time. If we knew the equation of this kind of curve we could replot it as a straight line, and the slope of the line would be an index of the magnitude of the flotation rate. It is easier to compare straight lines than curves. The basis used for obtaining the equation of the recovery vs time curve is the law of mass action. This law states that the "rate of a chemical reaction is proportional to the `active masses' of the reacting substances present at any given time." This, of course, implies a constant temperature. We can modify this for our use by using the term flotation reaction instead of chemical reaction and the term floatable particle instead of active masses. [ ] where C denotes concentration of particles, t denotes time, k denotes a proportionality constant. If the exponent of C is 1, then we have a first order rate reaction. If the exponent of C is 2, then we have a second order rate reaction. For a first order rate reaction, we obtain, after integration, [ ] where k is again a proportionality constant and has the dimension of the reciprocal of time. C, is the original concentration or weight or percentage of floatable particles. C, is the concentration or weight or percentage of floatable particles remaining in the flotation cell after time t. If all particles of the mineral to be floated were capable of floating we could take C, as 100 and C, would be 100 - R, where R is the cumulative percentage recovery of mineral at time t. But it is not usual for all of the particles to be capable of floating, because of surface oxidation, etc. Therefore, we must introduce a factor x which is the percentage of unfloatable mineral. Hence the first order equation is [ ] It has been proposed by various workers1-3 that this equation describes the flotation rate. More recently N. Arbiter4 states that a second order rate equation fits the recovery vs time curve more closely than does a first order rate equation. Morris' has discussed the evidence presented for this statement. This paper presents results obtained by consider ation of unstable miscible displacement within a porous medium as a quasi-turbulent displacement process, that is, a process characterized by fluctuations around a simpler, mean flow behavior. The instability usually results from the miscible displacing fluid having a viscosity lower than that of the displaced fluid. Such instability is evidenced in suitable experiments by the presence of viscous fingering. A unified theoretical relationship applicable to both stable and unstable displacement is derived. Parameters in the theory are obtained by empirical means. Although the theory describes an idealized conceptual model, agreement with experiment is quite reasonable up to moderately adverse viscosity ratios, such as 17:1. INTRODUCTION Many experimental studies of miscible displacement in porous media have been conducted with prediction of reservoir displacement efficiency as the ultimate objective. Most such studies have utilized lower displacing than displaced fluid viscosity, scaled to potential reservoir fluid pairs. Theoretical approaches have been largely limited to unit viscosity ratios, however, in spite of the necessity for an understanding of the mechanism of the unstable, adverse viscosity ratio displacement process. An obvious reason is the difficulty of describing in mathematical form the viscous fingering characteristic of these conditions. Observation of experiments conducted with dyed fluids in transparent systems suggests an analogy between unstable miscible displacement and turbulent flow in a pipe. In both cases there are fluctuations around a simpler, mean flow behavior. An important difference is that flow behavior of interest in the porous medium is entirely transient, contained within a transition zone between displacing and displaced fluids. Transient behavior complicates description in that coefficients in the equations become variables rather than constants. In the study reported here, the analogy with turbulent flow has been used in treating unstable miscible displacement as a quasi-turbulent displacement process. The purpose has been to derive, even if restricted to an idealized conceptual model, a unified theoretical relationship applicable to both stable and unstable displacement. A relationship meeting these specifications up to moderately adverse viscosity ratios, such as 17:1, is presented. One fluctuation parameter in the theory and dispersion coefficients are obtained by empirical means. The idealized theory is compared with experimental results. UNSTABLE MISCIBLE DISPLACEMENT AS QUASI-TURBULENT DARCY FLOW The miscible displacement of one fluid by another within a porous medium is considered in this study. Flow conditions are such that Darcy's law is applicable. It is further assumed that, by the stability criterion proposed by perrine,1 initial flow conditions lie well within the regime of instability. Thus substantial viscous fingering is assured. We wish to show how this flow regime can be represented as quasi-turbulent. That is, the Reynolds number for the established flow conditions is below that for inertial or turbulent flow within a porous medium, and lies within the regime for which Darcy's law is valid. Yet flow behavior can be described as the combination of some relatively simple average result, and characteristic fluctuations that are superimposed on the simpler behavior. Stated another way, flow behavior includes the movement of layers of fluids with different velocities past or over one another. Such descriptions are characteristic of turbulent pipe flow. The fluctuations in the present case are a direct consequence of the local viscous fingering which accompanies the unstable displacement process. Should displacement become stable, fluctuations would die out. It is of particular importance to note that fluctuations such as these can interact in a way that contributes to material transport by the basic flow. The basic transport equations required for engineering calculations must be modified to reflect this fact.

ALTHOUGH the retiring Chairman of the Industrial Minerals Division, Charles Henry Behre, Jr., does not say "you all" he is a product of the deep South, since he was born at Atlanta, on March 16, 1896. At the Boy Scout age he moved to New Orleans, where his father owned an ice plant, which seems an intelligent business for that climate. Intelligence evidently runs in the family, for Charlie, as his friends call him, has one sister who is a professor of zoology and another who is a concert pianist. Charlie has no explanation of why, when he reached college age, he decided to go to the University of Wisconsin, other than something more than an ordinary boyish interest in science, and the reputation which Wisconsin then enjoyed. At Madison he fell under the influence of Eliot Blackwelder, chose paleontology as his objective, and transferred, at the end of his sophomore year, to the University of Chicago, where the paleontological panorama seemed more extensive. He took his B.S. there in 1918, and graduated into the U. S. Army, where he eventually became a Sergeant in the Medical Corps.

ABOUT the time this magazine reaches its readers, Cresap P. Watson will celebrate his 53d birthday. If he spends that birthday at his West Los Angeles home, he won't be far, as distance is measured today, from Santa Barbara, where he was born on July 8, 1895. He is truly a member of a petroleum family; one brother, N. O. Watson, managed Royal Dutch Shell interests in Venezuela for years and is now general manager of the Caribbean Petroleum Co. at. Maracaibo; another brother, Rex, is vice-president of the Drilling and Exploration Co., while brother-in-law Ben Belt is an executive of Gulf Oil. His own life has centered in the petroleum industry since his first job in 1913 as camp cashier for a Mexican oil field at Tampico. Down on the isthmus of Tehuantepec he advanced to tool dresser and' production foreman for the company. The first World War interrupted his Mexican experience by transforming him into an artillery officer in France. Once the Army ceased to demand his services¬by then it was 1919-he returned to the task of furthering his professional career as agent for the Amerada Petroleum Corp. By 1927 he had reached the position in which he could be called an executive in the petroleum industry, having organized and become president of the Federal Royalties Co. His activities in local and national legislation affecting the petroleum industry increased as has his advocacy of the development of oil and gas fields under sound engineering and conservation principles through unitization or other co-operative forms of operation. Considerable amounts of his time go to the promotion of industry public relations.

The two most important parameters controlling the fracture behavior of a solid are its intrinsic properties, e.g.,grain size, and the operative stress system. The latter may be modified in laminates by the presence of weak interfaces. This is studied in notch-impact tests on a mode1 system of mild steel laminates containing a variety of interfaces. The effect of these is evaluated in terms of the ductile/cleavage transition. Two laminate geometries are distinguished, here called "crack-arrester " and "crack-divider". In both, cleavage is inhibited. This arises because of relaxation of a state of triaxial tension. In the crack-avrester laminates, cleavage initiated at a notch is confined to the layer containing the notch. In crack-cliuider laminates, a thick specimen behaves as the Sum of a number of thinner ones. Additional benefit may derive from improved intritnsic propevties of- the lanlinate layers arising from greater deformation in their manufacture. It has long been recognized that the two most important parameters controlling the fracture behavior of solids are their intrinsic properties (e.g., grain size friction stress,3 distribution of second phase particles4) and the operative stress system under which fracture occurs. In solids that show a ductile/cleavage transition, cleavage is favored by the presence of a notch. This is because triaxial tensions, generated by the localized plastic constraint at the notch, are operative when fracture occurs.= Anything that suppresses these triaxial tensions will be unfavorable to cleavage. Such suppression may possibly occur in laminates containing weak interfaces and the purpose of the present paper is to explore this possibility. Two basic laminate geometries, here termed "crack-avrester" and "cvack-divider", are examined. They are illustrated in Fig. 1. With the crack-arrester laminates, there is the possibility that, when the fracture crack approaches the interface, this, if weak, may delaminate due to the tensile stress acting parallel to the plane of the crack.= If this happens, energy will be used in delamination, the crack will be completely blunted, and the triaxial tension associated with the crack will be relaxed. To fracture the second portion of the laminate, crack reinitiation will be necessary and, because of the relaxation of the triaxial tension, this reinitiation will occur under conditions of nearly uniaxial tension, which are unfavorable to cleavage. Thus there is the possibility of cleavage suppression in the second and subsequent subunits of a crack-arrester laminate. With the crack-divider geometry, there is again the possibility of delamination at the interfaces. This will divide the crack into a series of cracks propagating through the individual laminate subunits. If these are sufficiently thin, the triaxial tension will be relaxed towards a state of biaxial tension in each of them. Thus, with the crack-divider laminates, there is again the possibility of cleavage inhibition. In the present work, these possibilities are explored using a notched impact test on mild steel laminates bonded with soft solder, silver solder or copper. Even if delamination does not occur, it is still possible that cleavage may be inhibited in laminates. With the crack-arrester geometry, the cleavage crack in the first layer may be blunted and arrested by plastic deformation in the laminate bond, if this is ductile. Partial relaxation of the stress transmitted ahead of the crack into the second layer will then result and this will reduce the significance of this stress in the fracture of the second layer. With the crack-divider geometry, there cannot be much effect in the absence of delamination unless a large amount of energy is absorbed in rupturing the ductile material. EXPERIMENTAL DETAILS The composition of the mild steel (wt pet) was: 0.04 C, 0.29 Mn, 0.01 Si, 0.006 P, 0.008 S. "As-received" plate was annealed for 2 hr at 900°C and slowly cooled to give a grain size of 0.04 mm. The laminates were made by brazing or soldering together mild steel plates 8 by 3 in. by various thicknesses. These were obtained from the annealed plate by machining, so that the intrinsic material properties were .kept constant. Laminates containing two to six steel layers were studied using standard Charpy V-notch specimens cut from the bonded plates. IN the spring of 1952 Calumet and Hecla Inc. began a geophysical program near Shullsburg, Wis., in the Wisconsin-Illinois lead-zinc district, to assist the geological and drilling exploration programs. Sphalerite, the ore mineral in this area, occurs with a considerable amount of marcasite. In general the higher the percentage of sphalerite in the ore, the higher the percentage of marcasite; however, there may be mineralized zones high in marcasite but low in sphalerite. Orebodies in general are relatively narrow and elongated. Reconnaissance exploration of virgin areas consisted of drilling along lines at 500 to 1000-ft intervals. Whenever a mineralized zone was intersected additional drilling was done to determine whether or not the zone carried zinc percentages of ore grade and, if so, to delineate the body. Calumet and Hecla Inc. was interested particularly in a method that would show the direction and position in which to drill from the original discovery hole. This suggested a method of contacting the orebody, which occurs at depths ranging from 100 to 200 ft, with one electrode. After a number of procedures had been considered it was decided to use equipotential line methods. Instrumentation and Field Procedure: The power source used was a 400-cycle Signal Corps motor-generator having a rated output of 1200 w at 115 v. The detection unit consisted of test probes, a two-stage amplifier, and &apos;head phones for determining the equipotential line by audio null. Field procedure consisted of contacting the sulfide body in the hole by a specially built spring-loaded expanding electrode which would be lowered into the hole, in the closed. position, until it reached the mineralized zone. At that point the mechanism was released so that the arms would make contact with the walls of the hole in the same manner that a well-bore caliper does. This electrode was then connected to the generator, the other terminal of which was connected to the surface electrode. The surface electrode was either a point, a straight line, or a circular line electrode. The point surface electrode was placed at a considerable distance from the hole, that is, 2500 to 5000 ft, depending somewhat upon the depth to the sulfide zone and the distance from the hole containing the subsurface electrode to which exploration was considered. A higher voltage output from the power source would have been desirable, although no difficulty was encountered in determining null points to a distance of 500 ft. Straight line electrodes used were approximately 1000 ft in length at a distance of approximately 1000 ft from the hole containing the subsurface electrode. The circular line electrode used consisted of 4400 ft of bare No. 10 copper wire, which provided a circle of 700-ft radius. All line electrodes were fastened to the ground at 20-ft intervals with copper staples 4 in. long. Equipotential points were determined at 25 to 100-ft intervals. Location of the points was made by plane table and stadia. In open country with a three-man crew, the points were plotted as they were determined. With a two-man crew, pegs were placed at equal potential points and surveyed in after several equipotential lines were determined. Although interpretation of results given in this paper is qualitative, the paper as a whole would not be complete without a discussion of the theoretical distribution of potential due to a circular line electrode. The theoretical distribution would be required if a quantitative interpretation of the measured potential distribution were to be made. The theoretical potential distribution due to a circular line electrode can be obtained by means of Legendre polynomials. DULUTH ENGINEERS&apos; CLUB The engineers of Duluth, Minn., have taken the first steps to form a Duluth Engineers&apos; Club by a meeting on May 20, at the Kitchi Gammi Club. At present, Duluth has no club embracing all engineers, although the environment is splendid for the growth of an engineers&apos; organization. Within reasonable &apos;distance of Duluth are over 100 members of the four large national engineering societies, a number of members of the lesser engineering societies, and many non-member engineers. Until the Duluth Association of Civil Engineers was formed, four years&apos; ago, these engineers had no common ground of meeting, and a force representing education, experience, and high ideals lay dormant. About 70 engineers were present at the organization meeting, and favorable responses were received from others who could not be present. F. E. House, President of the Duluth & Iron Range Railroad, outlined the objects of the meeting, calling attention to the importance of the engineer in all lines of activity in the war and the splendid qualities of American engineers in France. W. H. Woodbury outlined the plan, stating the three objects of the club as professional, social, and civic. Four plans of membership have been considered: First, an organization for all professional engineers, junior engineers, and associates, with .different status for each; second, an organization of members of the four big national societies; third, an organization of members and a limited number of associates; fourth, professional engineers, only, all on equal standing.

Alexander N. Winchell, Butte, Mont. (communication to the Secretary): Mr. Spurr calls attention to the fact that an ore-deposit may be due to a succession of concentrations at different geological epochs. He cites an example of such a condition on Napoleon creek, a branch of Forty-Mile creek, Alaska. It will perhaps be of interest to call attention to another example of the same general character, not so remotely situated. The example referred to is located on Pole creek, a tributary of Cherry creek, in the extreme northeastern part of Madison county, Montana. An excellent geological map of this region is to be found in the Three Forks folio (No. 24) of the United States Geological Survey. According to this map, Pole creek, in its upper course, occupies the contact between the " Flathead " formation, which Peale correlates with the Middle and Lower Cambrian, and an area of gneisses and schists supposed

"In the mines producing over 500 tons per day, skips have replaced the old method of hoisting ore by cars run onto cages. In the car and cage method, two men (station tenders) trammed the loaded cars onto the one-deck cage, and as the production increased the one-deck cage was increased to two decks and later to four decks. Landing chairs at the underground stations were necessary in this method and were the cause of many serious accidents by being carelessly left in the shaft by the station-tenders when leaving one station for anotherabove. The labor and time occupied in loading the leaving cages were con¬siderable, and, at times of rapid hoisting, four men were necessary in taking off empty and caging loaded cars. This also required at the surface landing, as many as ten men on a shift to remove the loaded cars and replacing them with empties, and tram the loaded ones to the surface ore bins, where the railway cars were loaded.The skips used in Butte are generally of 100 cubic feet capacity and hold five tons of ore, and weigh 7,500 lbs. The cage above, to which the skip is attached, weighs 2,300 lbs. The skips dump automatically into a pocket of 50 tons capacity. Two men are with the skips underground and load them from 125 ton capacity ore-pockets, under each station, the bottoms of the pockets having an inclination of 50 degrees from the horizontal. At the bottom of these pockets a gate is operated by compressed air. The labor of loading the skips amounts only to the opening and closing of a valve in the air-line, the ore running by gravity into the skips.Besides the saving in labor, the use of the skips has removed the necessity of underground landing chairs in the shaft and the accidents which are inevitable where such chairs are used."

"The pumping of the underground water of the Butte mines is largely done from two central plants of the Anaconda Copper Mining Co. The mines of one part of the mining district are served by a modern and mechanically efficient underground plant at the High Ore mine, and the remaining part by a similar one at the Leonard mine. Properties not affiliated with the A. C. M. Co. have separate pumping plants, although in several instances that company handles the water of outside companies, under which arrangement costly single plants are dispensed with. An extensive system of underground crosscuts and drifts connects these mines to both the main pumping plants, so that either may receive the water from all the mines in case there should be a failure in the other to perform its designed service.Quintuple) vertical electric pumps, 7 inches by 12 inches each, of a capacity of 600 gals. per minute under a head of 1,203 feet, are installed at both the plants. Each pump is direct connected to two 150 h-p. motors using 2,300 volts, the motors being on top of the pumps.At the High Ore plant the power cable of 400,000 c. m. is placed in a nearby shaft, the cable at present being hung from the surface to the 2,200 level. From this cable feeders of 300,000 c. m. are laid in connecting crosscuts to the pumping station at the High Ore shaft.The Leonard motors use 440 volts. The practice of building the pumps with the motors on top requires stations with high roofs, but permits the operation of the pumps if they should be submerged by an unusual flow of water."

When lime and magnesia are used as fluxes in the smelting of titaniferous ores fluid, digestible slags low in iron oxide and high in titanium dioxide are produced. The mineral phases present in such slags are (Fe,Mg)O.2TiO2, CaTiO3, and minor amounts of silicate glass (or its devitrification products). The flux additions are added to the ore in relative amounts to crystallize a ratio of (Fe,Mg)O.2TiO2 to CaTiO2, of near the eutectic proportions of 60 pct (Fe,Mg)0.2TiO2 and 40 pct CaTiO3. FeO-Ti02 (ilmenite) remains present in the slag until the FeO content is reduced to approximately 8 pct. Op- timum slag composition is obtained by reducing the FeO content to between 2 and 6 pct. Continued reduction shifts he (Fe,Mg) 0.2Ti02 to oxygen deficient structures classified as MgTi30e and MgTi204. Further reduction yields titanium oxycarbides and freezes the melts.

THE manufacture of anhydrous sodium sulphate or salt cake from natural deposits in the United States has been in general somewhat of a marginal undertaking. Competition from foreign sources and from large quantities of byproduct sodium sulphate produced domestically in the manufacture of hydrochloric acid and other chemicals has existed and continues. For example, most of the sodium sulphate produced is a byproduct or co-product in the manufacture of hydrochloric acid through the reaction of sodium chloride with sulphuric acid. In recent years, many manufacturers of rayon have installed equipment to recover sodium sulphate from waste spin bath liquors; today this is an important source. Before World War II large quantities of sodium sulphate were imported from Germany. In 1949 imported material from Europe again appeared on the domestic market. Natural sodium sulphate from Canada in substantial quantities also enters the United States markets. Despite this kind of competition, numerous attempts have been made to exploit various natural deposits of sodium sulphate in this country, but only a very few of these have survived economically over a period of years. One of these few operations is the plant of the Ozark-Mahoning Co. located 13 miles south of Monahans in West Texas. Several factors contributing to the successful life of this plant may be summarized as follows: 1—Geographical location. Monahans is reasonably close, freightwise, to the Kraft paper mills in Texas, Arkansas, and Louisiana; the Kraft paper industry is the greatest consumer of sodium sulphate in the United States. 2—Availability of natural gas as low cost fuel. Proximity of the natural gas fields of West Texas has been a tremendous asset, as the availability of low-cost natural gas is to all industry throughout the Southwest. 3—The nature of the deposit. The occurrence of sodium sulphate brines in southeastern New Mexico and West Texas has been very well described by Lang,&apos; who writes that the brines are found in the Castile formation of the Delaware basin. Here weathering has altered the anhydrite so that a relatively porous gypsiferous zone overlies a dense impervious mass of anhydrite. This porous zone provides traps where percolating ground waters that have picked up soluble salts may lodge. These traps or pockets are the natural brine reservoirs exploited at Monahans. Although several hundred wells have been drilled, currently some 25 wells serve to supply brine to the plant. All are within 1 1/2 miles of the plant and are conveniently tied together by an electric power system serving electric motors driving the pumps. Having the raw material in the form of a brine which can be pumped from shallow wells makes possible much simpler and more efficient handling than if it were in form of solids. By contrast, other deposits of sodium sulphate, such as those in Arizona, Nevada, and North Dakota, are in the form of the solid minerals, thenardite and mirabilite, which present somewhat more of a mining and mineral dressing problem.&apos; The largest producer of sodium sulphate from natural sources in the United States is at Searles Lake, Cal., and there a brine also is utilized. 4—Water. Substantial quantities are needed for cooling towers and for operation of gas engines. An area underlain with brine is not a promising source of fresh water, but fortunately, after a long search, an adequate supply was found nearly two miles from the plant. It may be appropriate to discuss briefly the grades of sodium sulphate offered on the market. Salt cake is the name usually applied to the grade of sodium sulphate used by the Kraft paper industry. It may be a low analysis byproduct, 95 to 97 pct sodium sulphate, with as much as l 1/2 to 2 pct residual acid, or it may be a natural product. Usually salt cake is considered a low grade product, but a great deal of a higher grade of material is marketed under this name. The specifications for glassmakers&apos; salt cake are somewhat higher than those of the paper industry, usually requiring 98 pct sodium sulphate. Technical anhydrous sodium sulphate is a high grade material and usually exceeds 99 pct sodium sulphate. It finds the biggest market in the textile industry and is used as a builder in some synthetic detergents. Glauber&apos;s salt, Na2SO4. 10H20, is usually of high purity. Preferred for some uses, it normally has been recrystallized from an anhydrous salt. A unique manufacturing process has been developed at Monahans. This process results in the production of an exceptionally high grade of salt cake, and qualifies for nearly all uses, including many which specify the technical anhydrous grade. All of the finished product, which is very white, passes a 10-mesh U. S. Standard screen, and is retained on a 200-mesh U. S. Standard screen. It is over 99 pct Na2SO4 with main impurities being sodium chloride and magnesium sulphate. Iron content is less than 0.01 pct. As mentioned, the raw material at Monahans is a brine drawn from wells. PRIMARY products of the Josephtown smelter are zinc metal of various grades, lead-free zinc oxide pigments, cadmium metal, and sulphuric acid. Zinc concentrates of domestic and foreign origin are blended and desulphurized at the roaster plant. The equipment includes five, 12-hearth Herreshoff roasters and two modified Trail-type suspension roasters. The sulphur dioxide containing gases from the roasting operation are diverted to a four-unit contact acid plant for the manufacture of sulphuric acid. The roasted calcines are agglomerated by sintering on Dwight-Lloyd-type sintering machines; the sinter is crushed and sized within required limits; and the sized sinter is smelted in vertical shaft-type electro-thermic furnaces. Of the 13 electrothermic furnaces of various sizes now in operation, four are designed to produce American process zinc oxidc of various specifications; and the remaining nine furnaces are equipped with vacuum-type condensers and produce zinc metal. Papers describing the general smelting practice at Josephtown have been published by AIME. Since both High Grade zinc metal and lead-free zinc oxide pigments are produced direct from the electrothermic furnaces without need for subsequent refining, the elimination of impurities such as lead and cadmium has to be accomplished during roasting and sintering operations. To effect the producing of both High Grade and Prime Western zinc products, the roasting and sintering operations are on two separate circuits. A High Grade circuit produces finished sized sinter low in lead, cadmium, etc., for the High Grade furnaces; and the Prime Western circuit produces finished sinter destined for the furnaces producing Prime Western metal. Sintering at the Josephtown smelter differs in many important respects from the sintering practice in smelters operating horizontal retort zinc furnaces. Requirements of the electrothermic smelting furnaces define the physical characteristics of the sinter, while the chemical composition of the sinter is controlled according to the grade of metal and oxide to be made as final products. Three principal objectives in the sintering process at Josephtown smelter are: 1. To transform the zinc calcine from the roasting operations into a hard, yet porous agglomerate that will not crumble in the smelting furnace. 2. Crushing and sizing of the sinter to obtain a proper screen analysis which is normally —% in. down to +1/4 in. particle size. 3. To eliminate, particularly in the High Grade circuit, as much of the impurities such as sulphur, lead, and cadmium as possible. The sintering plant as originally built in 1930 was equipped with three standard 42 in. x 44 ft Dwight-Lloyd sintering machines. Each machine was equipped with a 15x60 in. sintering corporation fan driven by 150 hp, 900 rpm synchronous motor through a magnetic clutch and capable of delivering 30,000 cfm of air at 15 in. of water and 150°F. Each sintering machine was driven by 7½ hp dc motor with controllers for varying the speed of the machine from 8 to 32 in. per min. The pallets were cast iron and the grates of the herringbone type. The charge was mixed in a 4 ft diam x 8 ft Stehli pugmill and transported by belt conveyor, elevator and tripper conveyor to a small bin over each machine. Shortly after the start of operations the following changes were found necessary: 1. The herringbone grates which plugged very quickly and were difficult to keep clean were replaced by straight, narrow cast-iron grate bars running at right angles to the travel of the pallets. These grate bars are held in place by a center bar extending across the pallet on the 24 in. dimension and by removable retaining plates which form the sides of the pallets. 2. Mechanical grate knockers were developed in conjunction with new grate bars for continuously and automatically cleaning the grates. 3. As the cast-iron pallets cracked, they were replaced with cast-steel pallets. In 1938, the capacity of the sinter plant was increased with the installation of two 42 in. x 22 ft machines which were brought from the company&apos;s Herculaneum lead smelter. With a circulating load of some 250 to 300 pct, production of finished sinter on the 42 in. x 44 ft machines at this time amounted to about three tons of sized sinter per machine hour. In 1945, one of the 42 in. x 22 ft machines was replaced by a 60 in. x 44 ft machine of our own design. In 1948, as part of the plant-wide expansion program, the sinter plant not only was expanded but also divided into two separate plants; namely, Prime Western and High Grade circuits. The sinter destined for furnaces producing Prime Western zinc metal is made in a new plant comprising two 60 in. x 44 ft Dwight-Lloyd-type sintering machines, each having a 45,000 cfm Sturtevant fan at 18 in. water static pressure and served by an 8 ft diam x 12 ft long rotary charge pclletizer and auxiliary crushing and sizing equipment. The sinter destined for furnaces producing High Grade zinc metal and zinc oxide pigments is produced in the old sinter plant which was expanded to accommodate four of the 60 in. x 44 ft sintering machines, replacing the old sintering units. In the High Grade sinter circuit, two units of the 60 in. x 44 ft machines are used as preliminary soft sinter machines; and the remaining two units of the 60 in. x 44 ft machines are used to make finished hard sinter. Purification Theory Partial elimination of lead and cadmium in the sintering of zinc ores is common knowledge. However, by some manipulation and by taking advantage of the double circuit, it is possible to make zinc sinter which is nearly free of contaminators. Lead
