Thus, any person possessing this Index can ascertain at once what has been published in the Transactions on a given question, and can learn, by writing to the Secretary, what is its nature, whether it is still to be had in pamphlet form, where it can be consulted in a public library, at what cost it can be copied by hand, etc., etc. In short, to those who own complete sets of the Transactions, this Index will be a great convenience; but to those who do not, it will be a professional necessity. The edition now in press is limited, and orders received will be supplied according to date.

There is an accelerating acceptance of change by management of cement companies. Diversity of response is noticeable in efforts across the country to reverse the downward trend in profits that brought margins in 1966 to the lowest point in 20 years. New concepts are emerging among managers as they seek to increase the efficiency in use of the basic corporate resources of men, capital and technology. The shift towards computerized control of cement manufacturing is making new gains as is diversification of cement companies into allied fields such as production and sale of natural and light- weight aggregates, crushed stone and concrete products. Increased interest in special products such as white cement and further moves overseas are also significant. Perhaps the most dramatic event of recent years occurred in Washington at hearings before the Federal Trade Commission where cement producers split on whether there should be FTC guidelines that would prevent ownership of ready-mixed concrete producers by cement companies.

Fox perhaps one hundred years scientists have been engaged in attempts at devising a satisfactory method of classification of coal. During this time many charts, tables and graphs have been proposed, some of which have had considerable merit, but no one system has been found to be applicable to all ranks of coal, nor has any one system received general acceptance. In many of the proposals, water eliminated between room temperature and 105° C. has been regarded as extraneous matter and calculations have been made to the air-dry or water-free basis. Such methods of. calculation do not lend themselves to satisfactory grouping of the high-moisture coals.1,2 A consideration not only of the properties of the high-moisture coals and their behavior on drying but of the generally accepted ideas of the coalification process and the role of water in this process indicates that water is an essential constituent of all coals and therefore should not be neglected. For example, in such low-rank coals as the lignites of the Northern Great Plains' deposits the inherent moisture of the lignite as mined plays a very important part in the physical properties thereof. Freshly mined lignite contains upwards of 30 per cent water and is extremely tough and resistant to shock. Upon exposure to the atmosphere, the lump loses part of its moisture and checks and splits, leaving a friable and broken up residue. So far as we have been able to determine, water is the only thing lost in this process and we are forced to the conclusion that moisture plays an extremely important part in the structural properties of the original lignite. With reference to the coalification process, Mack and Hulett3 pointed out in 1917 the important part that water played therein. They observed that water cannot be removed from peat or coal by pressure alone, but only as the result of chemical reaction, and suggested that peat in its early stages may be largely a hydrosol. Slow chemical changes occur over a long period of time until finally the mass becomes more largely a hydrogel. These views are substantiated to some extent by the experi-

ANY information that will increase the accuracy of our knowledge of the conditions prevailing in petroleum reservoirs should be of direct value in the determination of the proper operating technique as well as in the estimation of reserves and of ultimate production. The obvious method of obtaining this information is by studying a sample of the reservoir rock and its contents. In any such study, the problem of primary importance and maximum difficulty is that of getting the core to the surface in such a manner that its original fluid content is undis-turbed, which has so far proved to be an impossible task. Though it might be rash to say this will never be done, it is certainly safe to assume that a method for the recovery of a core at the surface in its undisturbed original state may not be developed in the immediate future, and certainly will not be forthcoming without a great deal of costly experimentation. Therefore any information that may be obtained that will help to correlate the state of a core (its fluid saturation) at the surface with its condition at the time it was drilled should be of value to the petroleum industry. The experiments described in this paper were undertaken with the purpose of determining, if possible, any relationship that might exist between the saturation of a core at the surface and its original fluid content. No consideration has been given to the question of contamina-tion by penetration of drilling water, since this problem has been exten-sively studied by other investigators. 1-3 Furthermore, it was regarded as being outside the scope of the present experiments, which were con-cerned only with the effect of pressure reduction upon the liquid content of cores. In an experimental study of this sort involving a large number of variables, accurate control of all factors is very important. The essen-tial and obvious procedure is to vary systematically one factor or condi-tion while keeping all the others constant, which necessarily involves a rather protracted and sometimes tedious experimental program.

Chlorination is frequently employed as a method of chemical attack and separation of the constituents of minerals. Occasionally, bromination has been used similarly. Separation of metal halides resulting from the use of either of these halogens generally entails difficult fractional distillation of the halides. Recovery of the halogens for re-use has often been attempted in the case of chlorine by oxidation of chlorides. Though attractive thermodynamically, this method of recovery fails due to the formation of stable oxychlorides. Although a little less reactive than either chlorine or bromine, iodine offers advantages in the field of mineral treatment. It has been shown, for example, that iron may be removed completely from ilmenite by iodinating the latter in the presence of carbon or hydrogen at temperatures near 800°c where good reaction rates are obtained. Under these conditions titanium does not form an iodide and is not transported in the vapour phase as is the Fe12 formed. Other good separations obtained between zinc and iron in willemite and tin and tungsten in scheelite concentrates confirm that separations of metal iodides by sublimation are more specific than similar separations attempted by distillation of volatile chlorides. Readiness of iodides to form stable vapour-phase complexes appears to contribute to this specificity. The very low stabilities of most metal oxyiodides permit quantitative recovery of iodine by oxidation of metal iodides. In the case of Fe12 derived from iodination of ilmenite, full recovery of iodine can be achieved by air oxidation of this compound at temperatures ranging from 350 to 500° C.

IN many of the important problems of the petroleum engineer, it is necessary to know accurately the laws governing the flow of gas and liquid mixtures in vertical' pipes. Although much work has been done along these lines, no satisfactory solution to the problem has been found. A good theoretical discussion of the energy balance in a gas¬lift has been published-by Versluys.1 One of the most important factors affecting the efficiency of the flow of oil and gas mixtures is slippage, and in most of the experimental work that has been done no provision has been made for the measurement of this quantity. As Versluys pointed out, since there is no method now known to estimate it from the data usually taken; slippage must be determined empirically. This paper presents the results of some work carried on to, measure slippage in short experimental gas-lifts. As shown herein, slippage can be easily calculated in a vertical pipe carrying a mixture of oil and gas if the fractions of the pipe occupied by liquid and gas respectively are known. In this work, the fraction of the pipe occupied by the liquid was measured under a wide variety of conditions and the relationship between this fraction and other quantities, which are easily measured in ordinary work, was determined. It was hoped that the quantitative relationship obtained from this work could be used-for making accurate calculations in flowing or gas-lift wells, but unfortunately it did not check satisfactorily when applied to actual wells. Apparently flow in long flow pipes is mote efficient than in the short ones used for the experimental work. Nevertheless, it is felt that the data themselves are of interest; that the method of attack may be of value in future work and that the relationship derived between slip and the relative velocities is a contribution toward the solution of the gas-lift problem.

AFter a year's continued impact of war, the task of the petroleum-refining industry stands out clearly and looms up in larger aspect. This time it is not, as it was so largely in the first World War, simply a matter of increased quantity—more and more of the same petroleum products that had substantially been standard for years. In this era the emphasis is largely on newer and improved materials which had been produced, if at all, in comparatively insignificant quantities, and for which manufacturing equipment was not available on a large scale. At the beginning of 1942 four great product needs (besides a number of lesser ones) confronted the industry: 100-octane aviation gasoline, toluene for T.N.T. production, high-quality lubricating oils for aviation and Army equipment service, and petroleum chemicals for synthetic rubber manufacture. The difficulty in presenting a review of engineering progress in petroleum refining during 1942 is that there is so little one is free to say about so much which has been and is being accomplished. At the opening of 1942 the program was to increase the then existing capacity of 50,000 bbl. a day of aviation gasoline to over 150,000 bbl. daily by building new plants at an estimated installation cost of $150,000,000. Later in the year. after the announcement by President Roosevelt of a large increase in the program for war-plane building, additional contracts were made between the Reconstruction Finance Corporation and rehers to raise the capacity to 250,000 bbl. per day. The greatly increased scope of the war activities in all parts of the world, the obligation of the United States as the arsenal of the United Nations, and the greater importance and use of bomber, transport, and cargo planes will undoubtedly bring about plans and installations for a further increase in production of aviation gasoline over the present announced plan. In this connection, Jesse Jones, Reconstruction Finance Corporation Chairman, announced that as of Oct. 31 the R.F.C. had through its subsidiary Defense Plant Corporation entered into contracts for the construction, expansion, or equipping of 28 plants to increase 100-octane aviation gasoline production, but gave no data on 'capacity involved or completion dates. His list did not, of course, include a number of existing plants, and some installations being made by companies who are themselves financing the construction. Production from existing operating installations was materially increased in a number of instances as a result of pooling knowledge of improvements in operation and also by the exchange of Components going into 100-octane blend to enable greater quantities of aviation gasoline to be produced from the over-

The Menominee range is one of the four great mining belts that flank the western prongs of Lake Superior. It has received its name from its location along the north side of the Menominee river, which at this place flows between the States of Michigan and Wisconsin. The term "range" is derived from the elevated ridge, extending in a westward direction, and along the southern flank of which the iron-ore mines are located. This range is some 200 to 300 feet high above the general level of the adjacent country, and is made prominent by its surroundings of low, swampy lands. Its whole length is about 27 miles, and it is intersected, at intervals along its course, by gaps which are threaded by streams. The geology of the Menominee range is peculiarly interesting. It is composed of three distinct groups of Hurouian rocks. The supporting group consists of light-colored limestone beds of a crystalline, siliceous character, called the "Norway limestone belt." The map, Fig. 1, and the section, Fig. 2, will give a general notion of the position and structure of the range. The properties shaded in the map are those of the Penn Iron Mining Company, which is the Michigan representative of the Cambria Iron Company of Johnstown, Pennsylvania. This belt is at least 1200 feet thick. It outcrops boldly at many localities along the range, especially north of the Norway, Quinnesec and Chapin mines. At Quinnesec it can be studied readily. The next, or Banking group, which is estimated at a thickness of 1000 feet, is called the Quinnesec ore-formation. It consists, in the portion next to the limestone, of siliceons or jasper slates, largely impregnated with iron oxide. These are succeeded by argillaceous hydro-mica black and flesh-colored slates. This formation embraces the deposits of the iron-ores. The third group consists of a series of dark gray, slaty or schistose beds, with occasional quartzose bands, having a thickness of 2000 feet. It is called the Lake Hanbury slate group.

THE application of indium to bearings was first advocated by C. F. Smart1 in 1938, for the purpose of inhibiting corrosion of certain bearing alloys. He found that a thin layer of indium plated on the bearing surface and subsequently diffused at elevated temperatures markedly decreased the rate of corrosion in lubricating oils containing organic acids. Most of his work was done on cadmium-base alloys, although he showed that the treatment was also effective for copper-lead and other alloys. Since their introduction, indium-treated bearings have found considerable use, particularly in connection with airplane motors.2 Undoubtedly the effectiveness of the indium plate in resisting corrosion depends upon its relative concentration on the bearing surface after the diffusion treatment and after prolonged use at operating temperatures. Some diffusion experiments were made on a number of base metals that had been indium plated, to determine the depth of penetration after heating for reasonably long periods of time. As only the practical aspects were desired, no attempt was made to determine actual diffusion constants. METHOD Two different series of experiments were carried out to study the diffusion of indium into several base metals. Cast cylinders about one-inch diameter were machined to 0.750-in. diameter, so as to remove all surface imperfections, and final finishing was done with oo sandpaper. The original diameters were very carefully measured with micrometers and then a layer of indium was electrolytically deposited on the cylinders from a sulphate bath.3 In the first series of experiments, about 0.002 in. of indium was deposited and diffusion was carried out at 150°C. for a period of 500 hr. in a thermostatically con- trolled electric oven. After the diffusion period, successive layers were machined from the specimens and analyzed spectro- graphically and chemically-the spectro- graphic examination serving as a guide to determine which layers should be chemically analyzed. Apparently there was some surface oxidation of the indium plate due to the long heat-treatment, which may have had some effect on the diffusion. Also, the cadmium alloy showed some incipient melting, which probably was caused by the formation of a low-melting eutectic. To eliminate these factors, another series of experiments was carried out by heating in an electrically heated, automatically controlled, oil bath at lower temperature. The preparation of the specimens was the same as before except that a layer of indium 0.0001 in. thick, an amount commonly used commercially on bearings, was deposited on each of the cylinders. Diffusion was carried out at l20°C. for a period of 200 hours.

The Yates field is situated in northeastern Pecos County, Texas. Its productive area is about 15,000 acres. Production is chiefly from limestone of Permian age. Depths of wells vary from 1100 to 1800 ft. Initial productions range from a few barrels to 8000 bbl. per hour. The field outlet has always been prorated. Gas-oil ratios originally varied from less than 100 cu. ft. up to 8000 cu. ft. per barrel at allowable production rates. The average ratio was about 500 cu. ft. Fig. 1 shows the structure of the field and the location of the Tippett lease, on which the original experimental tubing work was done. Before the latter part of the year 1929, little actual effort in practice had been given to determination of the conditions under which the highest efficiencies may be realized in naturally flowing wells. For the preceding few years attention had been given to gas-oil ratios and their possible reduction by maintenance of back-pressure by choking at the well head. Some attempts had been made toward reduction of ratio by bottom-hole choking. In late 1929, the Shell Petroleum Corp. started the experimental installation of specially designed flow columns adapted to high-pressure flowing conditions in the Yates field. The objectives in view were the attainment of low gas-oil ratios at low rates of flow and the maintenance of high bottom-hole pressures. All naturally flowing wells should be provided with a suitable eductor string immediately upon completion of the well, so that the benefits of efficient flow will be derived from the beginning. This paper presents a method of tubing for efficient flow and a discussion of some complex factors which influence well behavior. Factors Influencing Gas-oil Ratios Many factors influence the production of gas from naturally flowing wells. The writers believe that in some instances gas control is effected mainly in the reservoir itself, in others in the well bore, and in still others both sets of factors may be significant. During 1942, production of oil in Kentucky reached a total of 4,169,163 bbl. of which 1,807,809 bbl. came from eastern Kentucky. This was more than a million barrels less than in 1941, owing partly to the low price of crude oil, which almost eliminated wildcatting, and partly to spacing regulations, which limited the number of wells drilled in small, shallow pools where the pressures are not sufficient to maintain maximum recovery in widely spaced wells. In eastern Kentucky much of the oil was produced from outliers of the Mauch Chunk series at the disconformable contact of the Mississippian and Pennsylvanian. Although wells producing from this horizon, known as the Maxon, are sprinkled over the entire area, the greatest concentrations are in Martin, Floyd, Knott and Pike Counties. A new 30 to 40-bbl. well has been completed in this formation in ,Pike County, where the carbon ratio is so high that ordinarily oil would not be expected. Pike County is one of the largest producers of Maxon gas, and the offset well to this oil well produced gas. Of the 412 gas wells drilled in Pike County, 12.2 per cent produced gas from the Maxon horizon. During 1942, the old Menifee " Cornif-erous" field, the Mariba-Denniston field, was redrilled between old wells, and although it did not produce any large amount of oil it did contribute 2018 bbl. In the oldest oil field in eastern Kentucky, the Ragland pool, operators are cleaning out abandoned wells and are using this oil for fuel oil. There is a possibility that some of this may be used in the future as distilled fuel oil. Eight wells were completed in 1942 in the Jackson County gas field. The development of Jackson County, which was started in 1934 and in which commercial quantities of gas were encountered at a depth of 1100 to 1200 ft., has become of importance in 1942 with the completion of eight wells, making a total of 24 commercial producing wells with an average rock pressure of 140 lb. At this time the gas is not being marketed. In the last year it has been found that these wells, which produce from the Niagaran dolomite ("Cornif-erous"), respond to acidizing and the production has been thus greatly increased. There has been less development in Estill and Lee Counties than for several years. Two wells were drilled in Greenup County, one of which had a show of oil in the Berea sandstone. One deep test, drilled by the Owens-Libbey-Owens Co. in Lawrence County, was dry. This well was drilled to a depth of 4975 ft. into the top of the Clinton shale sequence. Of the 202 wells completed in Floyd, Martin, Knott and Pike Counties, 187 were gas wells, 3 oil wells and 12 dry holes. In Floyd County 66 per cent of the gas production was from the Devonian-Mis-sissippian black shales, 53 per cent in Martin, 79 per cent in Knott and 65 per cent in Pike. This is probably the largest continuous gas field east of the Mississippi

ONE of the problems that confronts the chronicler of the Porphyry story is to determine the date from which Morenci should be regarded as one of the group. The mines have the distinction of being the first operated in Arizona for copper. A small smelter was in operation as early as 1873 and in the eighties two smelters accounted for a substantial production ranging from 3,000,000 to 6,000,000 lb. per year. The first concentrator was built in 1886, but the ores were principally oxidized, and direct smelting ore still supplied most of the production. As early as 1893, the mining of somewhat leaner porphyry ores, containing copper in the form of the sulphide mineral, chalcocite, was commenced; but these still were of comparatively high grade and the concentrators were plants of 100 to 400 tons daily capacity. Moreover, the backbone of operations was still the production of rich oxidized ores for direct smelting. They assayed 10 to 15 per cent copper and the sulphide milling ores assayed 3 to 4 per cent. A significant comment appears in the Copper Handbook for 1908. Speaking of the Arizona Copper Co., Ltd., which was to become the most important component of the present Morenci enterprise, the editor, Horace Stevens, says: "A tremendous amount of ore is in sight, ore reserves . . . being estimated at 10,370,600 tons . . . " It seems fair to infer from this that the property was not yet regarded as an immense low-grade mine, but that the copper content of perhaps 70 lb, to the ton made an ore of "medium " grade even according to the standards of the time. Many thousands of years ago when our earliest ancestor first swung out of a tree, picked up a rock, and threw it at what he hoped might be his lunch, the minerals industry, in a manner of speaking, was born. It was then a very long step indeed to the primitive metal industry of our early civilizations, for we know that precious metals were accumulated and some metal objects were produced several thousand years ago. Prospecting, or "exploration" to use the modern euphemism, consisted of little more than outcrop examination and the use of a gold pan, and it probably did not change much from our earliest civilizations until relatively recent times. In a general sense, all the early explorers of North America were also prospectors, for mineral wealth was certainly one of the goals of the first pioneers and settlers. The earliest pioneers didn't do too badly either, for they discovered copper and iron in various places in the Appalachians and Michigan, gold in the Southeast Piedmont and many mineralized areas in the Southwest. In most places these were outcropping ores or gossans, and the prospecting was incidental to the arduous task of ekeing out a living in a new land. It was the explosive discovery of rich placer gold deposits at Sutter's Mill in California that caught the public fancy and precipitated the establishment of prospecting as a full-time occupation. After the end of the Civil War in 1865, full-time prospecting became an important occupation and continued as such for almost three generations. Prospectors equipped with picks, shovels, gold pans and four-footed transportation swarmed all over what are now our Western States, discovering thousands upon thousands of mineral showings-and certainly most of today's large mining districts. Our vigorous western mining industry is a tribute to the courage and persistence of these men. The techniques of these picturesque prospectors, however, were essentially the same as those of their predecessors-examination of every outcrop and assiduous use of the gold pan. The great increase in discovery at this time was therefore due to increased activity rather than to different techniques. An important result of this in- creased prospecting was the growth of interest in geology. It was during this period that the U.S. Geological Survey began to grow. Many of the major mining districts were mapped, and geological studies and projections began to have an impact on further ore discovery. Ore search and development gradually became more geologically oriented and the geologist became a fixture in most mining camps by the 20th century. The development of mass-mining techniques in the early part of the century also changed exploration concepts.

THE conversion plant of the Climax Molybdenum Co. is at Langeloth, Washington County, Pennsylvania, approximately 30 miles west of Pittsburgh. The molybdenite concentrates converted originate in the company's mine and mill at Climax, Colorado.1 They are delivered to the Langeloth plant by rail packed in 175-lb. bags. War production of concentrates at the mill started in 1918 but it was not until about 1920 that any peacetime uses of the metal began to develop. Early conversion of Climax concentrates was mainly into ferromolybden um, produced for the company by a custom smelter. CHRONOLOGY OF PLANT DEVELOPMENT In 1924 a small hand-rabbled roaster was built at Langeloth, the roasted concentrates being used principally in the production of calcium molybdate by a conventional wet method. The size of the original plant is indicated by the fact that during 1925 about 400,000 lb. of molybdenum was converted. In 1925-1926, a multiple-hearth roaster was erected (12-ft. o.d. 8-hearth Nichols-Herreshoff); also the first experimental ferromolybdenum was produced at Langeloth. At this time calcium molybdate was produced in the furnace by a process to be described. With continued interest in and increased use of molybdenum, it was necessary to arrange for enlargement of plant facilities. Although only one 12-hearth 16-ft. o.d. roaster was erected at this time (1929), plans were prepared for a duplicate unit, which was completed in 1935, giving a potential roasting capacity of some 16,000 lb. Mo per day under the then prevailing roasting practice. Shortly after this second unit had gone into production, increased demand overtaxed the plant, and as a result two 12-hearth 18-ft. o.d. roasters were placed in operation in 1936 and 1937. This gave the plant a potential roasting capacity of 40,000 to 50,000 lb. Mo per day, and necessitated major changes in auxiliary handling equipment as well as improved facilities for producing ferromolybdenum. Following the introduction (1938) of a new product-molybdic oxide briquets and because of the constantly growing demand for molybdenum, plant facilities were again enlarged in 1940 and 1941 by the erection of two 16-hearth 18-ft. o.d. roasters. These two new units, along with a change in roasting practice, brought the potential roasting capacity to 150,000 to 190,000 lb. Mo per day, based on about 15 lb. per sq. ft. of hearth area. Other departments of the plant have necessarily grown, until today the plant is modern throughout and completely mechanized, with equipment geared to produce marketable products as follows:

RADIOACTIVE calcium has been used to learn whether calcium can be detected in iron saturated with carbon after it has been melted under CaO- A12O3- SiO2 slags similar to those used in the iron blast furnace. It was hoped that the radioactive tracer technique might make possible a general study of steelmaking reactions in which calcium or calcium oxide are involved. No calcium could be found in the metal under conditions which were favorable for the reduction of calcium, and it has been concluded that the calcium content of the iron was less than 6 x 10 - pct. Some of the problems encountered have been instructive with regard to pitfalls and limitations of tracer methods. Calcium oxide occurs in almost all iron- and steelmaking slags, and it is essential to the success of all commercial basic steelmaking processes. Calcium alloys are sometimes used in the deoxidation of steel and for the innoculation of gray iron. The element calcium is therefore almost as ubiquitous in the steel industry as are carbon and oxygen, but calcium has been thought to be completely immiscible with iron in both the liquid and the solid states.' It does not seem entirely unreasonable to Suppose, however, that some low concentration of calcium might exist in liquid iron under a basic slag with other conditions being favorable, just as silicon and other elements can be introduced into iron by reduction of their oxides from slags under appropriate circumstances. The radioactive tracer technique offered a more sensitive method than chemical analysis of testing this supposition. The reasons for interest in this investigation were strong enough to justify a recognized risk of failure. On the theoretical side, information on the distribution of calcium between liquid iron and a slag and the rate at which the equilibrium distribution is approached would contribute strongly to the general theory of slag-metal interface reactions. Furthermore, any evidence on the presence of calcium in liquid iron might provide a vital clue to the mechanism of the desulphurization of iron by slags. All of the reactions which have been proposed to explain desulphurization postulate that the sulphur ultimately becomes fixed in the slag as calcium sulphide, but the mechanism by which sulphur

EXPERIMENTS on twenty-six drilling muds were carried out in an effort to establish a correlation between the apparent viscosity values for these muds as obtained with the Marsh funnel and the Stormer viscometer. This required a calibration of both instruments in which the density of the calibrating liquids was taken into account. Corresponding to the Marsh-funnel viscosity values that were obtained at 1500 c.c. in, 1 qt. out, equivalent Stormer viscosity values were obtained at a Stormer cylinder test speed of approximately 1100 r.p.m. Further, a linear relation between the logarithms of the Stormer cylinder test speed and the resulting apparent viscosity was found to exist for the muds tested for 200 to 1000 r.p.m. The significance of the slope of this linear relationship is discussed as it applies to the field use of drilling muds. It was concluded that Marsh-funnel viscosity measurements are expressible in absolute units that may be correlated with Stormer viscosity measurements, provided these are made in the manner described in the paper. INTRODUCTION The Marsh funnel is used almost universally to determine the viscosity of drilling muds in the field. The Stormer viscometer is commonly used to determine the viscosity of drilling muds in the laboratory. With the Marsh funnel, the time required for one quart of mud to flow out of the funnel originally filled with 1500 c.c. is often taken as the measurement of viscosity. With the Stormer instrument, drilling mud is tested at a cylinder speed of 600 r.p.m. and by means of calibration data the apparent viscosity is expressed in absolute units. Neither of these instruments is an absolute viscometer, and apparent viscosities obtained with either are influenced by the arbitrarily standardized conditions under which the measurements are made. It is disconcerting to the man in the field to be told that laboratory measurements of the viscosities of a group of muds differ widely, when he has already observed that they have identical viscosities when tested in the Marsh funnel. Drilling muds are not perfect fluids, therefore it is not surprising to find a lack of correlation between the apparent viscosity of a mud as determined with the Marsh funnel and that determined with the Stormer viscometer. The work described here was undertaken to develop a correlation between Marsh-funnel and Stormer viscosity measurements. To a considerable degree this has been accomplished. This study has resulted not only in a better understanding of the two viscosity instruments and the data obtainable from them, but has given considerable information regarding the viscosity characteristics of drilling muds.
