Most of what has been written during the past few years on marine mineral resources has emphasized the vast potential of the ocean, and its floor, as a source of the vital mineral raw materials upon which our modern technological society depends. Computations have been made to demonstrate that the sea contains sufficient minerals to support any reasonable world population indefinitely. The importance of these resources from the standpoint of strengthening the national mineral resource base has been pointed out. And though the information upon which these conclusions are based is sketchy, essentially qualitative, and often conflicting, there can be no doubt that the mineral potential of the sea is tremendous and that there are compelling reasons for working toward its exploitation. Unfortunately, there has been little emphasis on the problems that must be overcome, from the perspective of the economics of mineral production. Some of these problems have been noted, and some authors have appraised them realistically. However, many proposed solutions have been more romantic than practical, from the standpoint of both technology and economics. As a result the general impression has been given, particularly to those uninitiated in the realities of mineral production, that the mineral wealth of the sea is there for the taking-requiring only a good modicum of courage and technologic innovation to place it within easy grasp. But developing the capability necessary for substantial, profitable production of sea bottom minerals will be far from easy. It will be accomplished much more quickly if the problems are faced squarely, defined properly, and attacked in an orderly, logical sequence. While this approach may lack glamour, it offers the highest probability for success.

It is impossible to speak in exact terms of the effect that selective flotation has had, is having, and may have on the State of Utah. Its results enter into the economic structure of the state in so many ways and its ramifications are so widespread, that every line of industry is affectcd. Some effects can be definitely determined; others can be reasonably approximated; but the effect as a whole can not be set out in exact figures. Utah is essentially a mining state; mining is its basic industry and always will be. Agriculture, equally a basic industry, and of course, equally vital, can be practiced on only 6 per cent. of the 85,000 square miles of its area. It follows, therefore, that the economic future of this state depends upon a development of its natural resources. About 6 or 7 years ago, the mining industry in Utah was at a low ebb. This condition was caused partly by postwar conditions and other temporary causes, but prevailed also, which was most important, because the direet-smelting ores of the state were being rapidly exhausted and the cost of treatment of complex ores was almost prohibitive. Furthermore, the wet concentration of low-grade ores was unsatisfactory and did not result in producing a good smelting product. On visualizing this situation, one of the large smelting companies in the valley had the courage, ability and faith to develop and expand the principles involved in selective flotation of complex ores. This example has been followrd by other smelting and reduction companirs and the result has changed the entire aspect of the mining industry in Utah. The utilization of the zinc in the low-grade, lead-zinc-silvrr ores was the principal prob1t.m to be solvcd. The average yearly production from the State of Utah for the 10 years beginning 1914 and ending 1923, was something less than 10,000 tons of zinc corlcentrates. This period includes the world war, when abnormal priccs stimulated production. In 1924, selective flotation began to be practiced on a considerable scale, replacing concentration by gravity and bulk flotation which had been used generally until this time. Production and Value of Zinc Concentrates The production of zinc concentrates during 1924 was approximately 24,000 tons, or twice the average yearly production of the previous 10

One of the most interesting as well as important factors connected with the petroleum industry is the consumption of motor fuel. A few years ago we always spoke of "gasoline," but when natural gasoline and benzol became more important it seemed desirable to include all of these products in the petroleum statistics and so there was adopted the term "motor fuel," which embraces these three products in their entirety. Gasoline always included all stove and motor gasolines, high-grade naphthas, cleaning naphthas, solvents, varnishmakers' and painters' naphtha and gas-machine gasoline. "Motor fuel" includes all of these products also; therefore, technically the term "motor fuel" is incorrect, but as the total quantity of these non-motor naphthas is small their inclusion does not distort the results to any appreciable extent. When the Federal Oil Conservation Board appointed its first semiannual forecasting committee early in 1930 to project the demand for gasoline and crude oil into the year 1930, it was necessary for that committee to formulate a method of forecasting. It adopted the system in use by some of the oil companies at that time, of using automobiles and per-car consumption. Six months later the American Petroleum Institute also formed a committee for forecasting, which adopted the committee principle of asking each member to produce his own forecast of demand by any method he thought best and to give a full explanation to the committee. The result of the latter method was to get the benefit of as many different methods of forecasting demand as there were members. The writer does not recall any two members ever using exactly the same method. By studying the different forecasts and their methods, there evolved a composite opinion, which was presented to the industry as the committee's estimate. The same method has been followed by the American Petroleum Institute or Planning and Coordination Committee ever since.

At the present time five localities in the Argentine Republic are known to bear direct evidences of the presence of petroleum. The segregation of these localities is more or less arbitrary inasmuch as minor indications may be found to extend from one locality to the other at no regular distance apart, especially in the northern and western part of the republic. These localities are listed as follows: North Argentine-Bolivian region, Salta-Jujuy district, provinces of Mendoza and Neuquen, Comodoro Rivadavia, and the Gallegos-Punta Arenas region. Economic conditions attract us to the possibilities of developing these and other regions of countries in the southern hemisphere. Development work will, naturally, be undertaken first in such localities as present direct manifestations of the presence of petroleum; "hidden fields" may exist, but, unless discovered by accident, their development will be left to the last. The problems to be solved in the development of the petroleum resources of the Argentine republic are mainly of stratigraphy, structure, and transportation. We are not here concerned with the unfavorable climate of the countries to the north in the tropics where, for us of the "far north," life hangs by a thread ready to be severed by a mosquito, gnat, or tropical germ. North Argentine-Bolivian Region The North Argentine-Bolivian region has already been described by the author.' Geographically and geologically this is admittedly one field extending from Argentine into Bolivia. It is not necessary to repeat here the various conditions pertaining to this field, though the summary may be quoted as follows: Extending from northern Argentine northward into central Bolivia is a belt of petroleum seepages. On account of the remoteness of the district it has, heretofore, been little considered by oil operators. The regional geology is comparatively well understood but the local features have not been carefully detailed. THE purpose of this note is to show that the dislocation mechanism controlling the creep of Fe-4 pet Si alloy1 may equally account for the behavior of a-Fe2 over the same temperature range. A recent study of the creep behavior of a-Fe has been made by Ishida et al.2 Their results were in agreement with the mechanism of nonconservative motion of jogged screw dislocations over the entire range of temperatures investigated, from 480° to 1045°K. However, the observed creep rate was much higher than that which could be accounted for by the above model unless the authors assumed that pipe diffusion became significant below 775°K. More recently, Cheng et al.1 inves-gated the creep of Fe-4 pet Si alloy over about the same temperature range and found that the results could be correlated fairly well with a dislocation climb mechanism as represented by Eq. [l]. Proceeding as shown previously,1 if creep is controlled by a single climb mechanism, at intermediate stresses, the shear creep rate, y, can be represented by where n and K are material constants {K is independent of the temperature but dependent on the structure, that is, K decreases during the primary stage and reaches a steady-state value over the secondary stage of creep), t is the applied shear stress, G is the shear modulus, gc is the free energy of activation for creep (usually equal to that for self-diffusion, gd), and RT has the usual meaning. By solving for y, the apparent activation energy for creep, Q which can be determined experimentally, is given by where hc is the enthalpy of activation for creep which usually is also equal to that for self-diffusion, h^. By using Eq. [2], the data in Fig. 2 of Ref. 2 can be re-plotted as shown in Fig. 1. By comparing the two figures, it is seen that the slight increase in the apparent activation for creep over Region II, as noted in Fig. 2 of Ref. 2, is due to the influence of temperature on the shear modulus rather than of the stress on the

brittlement or notch sensitivity progressively increases. Further, in contrast to results obtained with the impact test, the notch strength for the large specimens does not reveal a 500°F embrittlement range. The notch sensitivity as determined with the 0.3-in. specimen of 4340 steel given the stepped austenitizing treatment has been discussed elsewhere. This quantity as measured for the 1.1-in.- diam notch tensile test and given in Fig. 3, is taken to signify that reduced notch sensitivity is encountered in the 600" to 800°F tempering range for specimens given the stepped austenitizing treatment. The stepped austenitizing treatment may, there- fore, be of use in promoting deeper hardenability for a 4340 steel while at the same time giving reduced notch sensitivity in the high-strength range in which this steel is now being used. A considerable interest in the subject of superlattices has been manifested by many papers and reviews that have recently appeared, both in physical and metallurgical publications. This interest is due largely to the apparent simplicity of the ordering process, which permits the explanation of many phenomena on the basis of elementary theory. Moreover, ordering may cause important changes in the physical properties of alloys. In this paper, we shall discuss the causes of superlattices in terms of simple properties of the elements that give rise to them, together with a series of experiments performed to test our conclusions. Evidence is presented that in some cases the process of ordering is more complex than might be supposed. While the different species of atoms are usually found in random positions in alloy lattices, in some cases unlike atoms tend to be nearest neighbors. Bethe's1 "order of neighbors" is a statistical measure of thib tendency. At suitable compositions it is possible for atoms in large regions to be regularly arranged, which causes superlattice lines to appear. in X-ray diffraction patterns. Bragg and Williams2 haw dealt with this "long-distance order" in their fundamental work 011 superlattices. The magnitude of the effect can be determined from the entropy of mixing, which is calculate from first principles. Since the ordered state has the lower entropy, it must also have a lower internal energy to be stable at any temperature. MANY factors enter into the manufacture of basic open-hearth steel of high quality. Perhaps the two most important are temperature and the iron oxide content of the metal. If we can control these two factors we can essentially control basic open-hearth practice. SOURCE AND EFFECT OF IRON OXIDE Earlier investigators, especially Herty and his associates, have shown that iron oxide is introduced into the open-hearth furnace in four ways:1 1. - By oxidation of the scrap by furnace gases. 2. By decomposition of the limestone. 3. By oxidation of the iron oxide in the slag by furnace gases. 4. By direct addition of iron ore to the charge. We also know that the speed of operation of an open-hearth furnace depends, for a given charge and given combustion conditions, on the rate at which iron oxide will diffuse from the slag into the metal. The rate of diffusion depends upon a number of variables, such as iron oxide content of the slag, slag viscosity, etc., which also depend upon the amount of iron oxide in the metal, amount of carbon present, temperature, and so forth. For a given carbon and a given temperature, the iron oxide content of the metal is in proportion to the iron oxide content of the slag. This fact can be easily verified by analysis of slag samples taken as described by Herty.2 It is preferable to take these samples just before deoxidation. In killing the steel samples with aluminum it is desirable to use aluminum rod of 99 per cent purity; ordinary commercial aluminum rod with a purity of approximately 92 per cent is not satisfactory. In drilling these samples it is also essential to take the largest amount of drillings possible. This gives more accurate results because it eliminates spotty segregation of Al203.

The term "survival" in the title means the preservation of a society in which men are free from the political and economic restraints that characterize totalitarian systems, be they communist, socialist or facist. It means the ability to withstand the enemy's offensives in the fields of propaganda, commercial competition and, if necessary, war. The temptation to substitute "victory" for "survival" is great but a realistic appraisal of the creeping socialism and demagoguery that pervade our time indicates that we may have to be content with survival in status quo. "Mineral strength" means assurance that adequate supplies will be available to meet all the contingencies of cold and hot wars. The overall mineral position of the U. S. viewed in the light of these premises is far from secure. It is true that we are the leading producing and consuming nation of the world, but the Soviet Union is gaining and the Sino-Soviet Bloc confronts us with a sobering potential. The emergence of the Common Market in Europe as an economic and political unit places a third independent entity into the competition. Our total mineral output continues on an up- ward trend but the reverse is true in certain strategic commodities. Moreover, consumption is moving ahead faster than production so that there is increasing dependence on imports which has significant adverse geopolitical connotations. There is widespread belief that our resources can at least maintain present levels of self-sufficiency during this critical period in world history, but social dreamers, the labor monopoly, and trade and taxation policies have discouraged aggressive activity in exploration and development, and access to essential foreign sources is threatened by a variety of circumstances. Our stockpiles, belatedly built up to achieve minimum protection against shortages in time of war, are under. political attack and threatened with partial destruction on the basis of what are at best uncertain assumptions regarding the new: look of global warfare.

The nickel-chromium alloys form the base for many industrial heating alloys, so that this system is of considerable practical importance. The literature on these alloys, however, contains much conflicting evidence, not only regarding the solubility limits of the terminal solid solutions at different temperatures but even regarding the number of phases existing in the system. Part of the difficulty undoubtedly arises from the fact that chromium of sufficiently high purity has been available only during the last few years. A second and possibly even more important difficulty arises from the ease with which chromium reacts with silicon and carbon compounds and the atmosphere to form silicides, carbides, nitrides and oxides. Pilling and Kihlgrenl in 1929 reviewed the existing scanty information. They did not consider the diagram by which they summarized the various bits of information to be entirely satisfactory. Matsunaga2 investigated the system by thermal analysis, microscopic examination and other means. Electrolytic nickel of 99.9 per cent purity and thermit chromium containing 0.30 per cent Al, 0.40 per cent Fe, 0.25 per cent Si and 0.04 per cent C were used. A Tammann furnace with hydrogen flowing through it was used for melting. Sekito and Matsunaga3 reported an X-ray investigation, presumably on these same alloys, which, as far as can be judged from the abstract, essentially confirmed the thermal and microscopic results. IT is an outstanding fact of Nature that many of the practical properties of substances are dependent, not on their ultimate chemical composition, but on the kind and degree of aggregation of their constituent particles. Thus, a granite boulder is unmoved by wind or water, but if reduced to a fine dust it will be blown about by the wind and washed away by the rain. Carbon in one crystalline state of aggregation (diamond) is the hardest known substance, whereas in another crystalline state (graphite) it is so soft that it is used as a lubricant. Laying too much stress on the mere chemical analysis of substances is apt to obscure the fact that the nature of the aggregation of their particles is always a factor of importance, and sometimes the most important factor. Colloid chemistry deals with matter in. a very fine state of subdivision; its sphere begins with particles just a little smaller than a wave length of light-and extends clown until they blend into molecular dimensions. With particles of this size; such phenomena as surface tension and adsorption, which depend on the development of free surface, become enormously magnified. Thus a cube of 1 cm. edge has a surface of only 6 sq. cm.; but if it is reduced to colloidal dimensions by being cut up into cubes each having an edge of 0.01 , (0.00001 mm.), it will yield one million, million, million (1,000,000,000,000,000,000) such cubes, having a combined area of 600 sq. in., or 21,274 sq. ft. The tiny force with which a drop of rain clings to the window pane becomes a. factor to be reckoned with, if the surface involved is increased millions of times. From the colloid-chemical viewpoint, metals and alloys may be regarded as jellies or sponge-like structures, the viscosity or stiffness of which at ordinary temperatures is exceedingly great; and like all jellies their properties are dependent on the composition and degree of dispersion of their constituent phases. The area discussed herein, commonly known as the North Texas district, embraces the following 10 counties: Archer, Baylor, Clay, Cooke, Foard, Hardeman, Knox, Montague, Wichita and Wilbarger. It is underlain by two major structural features. The northernmost portion of the district, including Cooke, Montague, northern Clay, Wichita, Wilbarger, Foard and Hardeman counties, is underlain by the system of buried mountains known as the Red River uplift, which is parallel to and closely related to the Wichita-Amarillo uplift of Oklahoma and the Texas Panhandle. While the presence of a great majority of the numerous oil fields of the area is traceable to this feature, the production in Archer, southwestern Clay and southeastern Baylor counties is due to the influence of what is known as the Cisco Arch (so called because of its influence on Cisco deposition), the axis of which extends in a north\lest-southeast direction across Archer County. Discussion of Tables Preliminary to discussing developments during the year 1933, it appears advisable to offer a few words of explanation on Tables 1 and 2, included as part of this paper, in which an effort has been made to sumlllarize oil and gas development in North Texas to Jan. 1, 1934. One of the chief objectives of this publication is understood to be to show production by individual pools, and, if possible, by distinct pays in a pool. This the authors haw been unable to do for North Texas. It is a generally recognized fact that there are well over 100 individual pools, which should perhaps be mow properly called "productive spots," in Archer county alone, with perhaps an even greater number in Wichita County. It can be found upon investigation that an apparently continuous productive area covering Many acres consists of a half dozen lenticular sands, all stratigraphically different,, which produce only under portions of the apparently continuous area. IN THE literature on the elimination of metalloids in basic open-hearth practice, there are a great many heats recorded in which excellent data on changes in slag and metal composition during refining are given, but in almost all of these heats either temperature data or weights and analysis of charge are unrecorded and observations on the physical characteristics of the slag are almost always lacking. With these points in mind, a test heat was made in which as complete as data possible on all the factors that affect the elimination of metalloids were obtained. THE TEST HEAT The test heat was made in a standard 100 ton stationary furnace at the Lackawanna Steel Co., Lackawanna, N. Y. on January 17, 1922. The Charge-Scrap.-The scrap consisted entirely of rail-heat butts, selected from a number of heats made, the week before the test. The average analysis of the scrap was calculated from the analysis of these heats-and from the weight of scrap from each heat. Pig Iron.-Two ladles of pig iron were used in the charge and two samples were taken from each ladle as it was poured into the furnace. These four samples were composited for the average pig-iron sample.

The sudden death of Captain Jones, September 28,1889, became known to his fellow-members on the eve of the Ottawa meeting of the Institute; and at that meeting, Mr. Charles Albert Ashburner, of Pittsburgh, expressed with unaffected feeling and unpremeditated eloquence the sorrow of all. Mr. Ashburner subsequently undertook to revise and extend, for in in the Transactions, the remarks he had made at Ottawa; but death surprised him also, in the midst of his labors; and it has become my duty and privilege to prepare from the memoranda he left behind, the present brief and inadequate notice. To me, who knew and loved them both, this task of double sorrow recalls them both, with a peculiar sense of presence and of absence. They seem to speak from another land, not far away, yet not with human voices—like an echo and its echo. William Richard Jones was born in Luzerne county, Pennsylvania, February 23, 1839. His father was Rev. John G. Jones, a Welsh minister, who had immigrated to the United States in 1832. William was the eldest son, and his father's failing health made it necessary for him to begin early the work of self-support. At the age of ten, he was apprenticed to the Crane Iron company, of Catasauqua, and in this humble capacity entered upon the profession in which he was to become famous. Unquestionably, the thorough acquaintance with all details, acquired by working his way from the bottom to the top, was one secret of the conspicuous executive ability which characterized him in the height of his career. According to a letter from Mr. J. H. Geer, Assistant Chief Engineer of the Cambria Iron Company, Mr. Jones entered the service of that company in 1858 or 1859 as a machinist, and continued to work in that capacity until July, 1862, when he enlisted as a private in the 133d Regiment of Pennsylvania Volunteers, in which he afterwards commanded a company. This paper is a brief description of the design and equipment of a new coal mine in southern Illinois, which has many features not common practice in shaft coal mining and which is laid out and equipped for such unusually large capacity that it promises soon to become one of the largest mining operations of its kind. Shaft sinking for the mine, New Orient, was commenced in May, 1921, by the Chicago, Wilmington & Franklin Coal Co. In October, 1924, the plant was practically completed and was producing over 6000 tons of coal per day. There is good prospect that within a few years, when the mine is fully developed and manned, the output will attain a daily rate of 12,000 tons. The coal seam at New Orient lies approximately horizontal, about 500 ft. below the surface, and may be said to run from 9 to 12 ft. in thickness. The tendency in Franklin County has been toward large mining units (5000 to 6000 tons per day) with great care being given to protection against fire and explosion hazards, and usually with quite elaborate surface plants permitting careful preparation of the coal into graded sizes comparable with those made in the anthracite region. The field is unionized, with uniform conditions of wages for various classes of work, hours, etc., and the Illinois mining laws are quite specific with regard to fireproofing and safety measures. These conditions make it difficult for any hut well-equipped and well-operated mines to meet the competition of the numerous fine properties of which this county can justly be proud. The coal company's property was already developed on the western side by the Orient mine—a much visited and written about operation (with which many of you are possibly familiar through the Department of Mines' film "The Story of Coal") which until recently held the 8-hr, production record with 8218 tons and usually ran quite consistently with production of slightly over 6000 tons per day. Experience at Orient wat naturally one of the greatest influences in determining the location and character of the New Orient.

APPALLING as has been the loss of life in the last 51 months, there is one slight compensation : no longer will there be in the world a cripple, in the old meaning of the term. Men handicapped by wounds or disease, there will be, unfortunately, and in numbers beyond what the world has known since the wars of Napoleon; but neither they nor the industries from which they were called off to war will be "crippled" in the sense in which both would have been had mankind not learned the lesson of conservation and come to understand that the most important field for such conservation is not in the forests and' the mines but among men and women. From the beginning of the Great War, France, Great Britain, Belgium, and most of the other Allies have studied the problem of restoring the soldiers and sailors injured through war to physical and economic efficiency; and from their experiences, especially from that of Canada, the United States has learned much. Consequently, our task of preparing for the return of our disabled men has been easier and, in some ways, more comprehensive than theirs. Complex as are the details of the machinery which the United States has set in motion to take care of the men injured by wounds or disease, the plan itself is simple. Taught by European experience, the Surgeon-General of the Army and the Bureau of Medicine and Surgery of the Navy have provided, on both sides of the Atlantic, every known surgical and medical facility for restoring the injured or diseased man to a physical condition as nearly normal as possible. While in the hospital in France or England, on the transport coming to America, and in the hospital here, the disabled man is incited in every way to believe in his future efficiency, to want to be a normal worker, to desire to retake his place in that society of workers from which he went, temporarily, to do the greater work of preserving civilization. Furthermore, since purposeful occupation is now regarded as an essential form of, treatment with most men in the hospital, especially in the convalescing stage, many of these men will have been actually started on the road to earning before they are discharged from the army surgeon's care.

The majority of the work done in the field of rock mechanics uses as a basis for analysis the classical linear theory of elasticity. Most workers in rock mechanics realize that removing the assumptions of homogeneity and isotropicity will bring the analysis of stress-strain relationships for geologic materials closer to reality. However, the algebra involved in reducing these restrictions is usually heavy. It is the purpose of this paper to relax the condition of isotropicity to that of orthotropicity and examine the sensitivity of this change for some simple geometries. In addition some necessary relationships between stress and strain for orthotropic materials will be developed. The recent years have seen an increasing interest in the field of rock mechanics. This is amply demonstrated by the number of articles appearing in the technical literature. The majority of these articles use as a basis for analysis the classical linear theory of elasticity. In addition, the assumptions that the material under consideration is elastically homogeneous and isotropic reduce the number of constants necessary to write an analytical relationship between stress and strain to two, e.g., Young's modulus and Poisson's ratio. Most workers in the area of rock mechanics realize that removing the conditions of homogeneity and isotropicity will bring the analysis of stress-strain relationship for geologic materials closer to reality. However, the algebra involved in analysis without imposing these restrictions is usually heavy. It is the purpose of this paper to relax the condition of isotropicity to that of orthotropicity and examine the sensitivity of this change on stress concentration for some simple geometries. In addition, it is shown that the expression for maximum stress concentration for some simple geometries considered can be further simplified if further assumptions are made. The maximum stress concentration, under these additional simplifying assumptions, is shown graphical1y. In the linear theory of elasticity, generalized Hooke's law assumes the following form

MORE than twelve years were spent by Wöhler at the instance of the Prussian Government in experimenting upon the resistance of iron and steel to repeated stresses. The results of his experiments are expressed in what is known as Wöhler's law, which is given in the following words in Du Bois's translation of Weyrauch :* "Rupture may be caused not only by a steady load which exceeds the carrying strength, but also by repeated applications of stresses, none of which are equal to the carrying strength. The differences of these stresses are measures of the disturbance of continuity, in so far as by their increase the minimum stress which is still necessary for rupture diminishes." A practical illustration of the meaning of the first portion of this law may be given thus : If 50,000 pounds once applied will just break a bar of iron or steel, a stress very much less than 50,000 pounds will break it if sufficiently often repeated. This is fully confirmed by the experiments of Fairbairn and Spangenberg, us well as by those of Wöhler; and, as is remarked by Weyrauch, it may be considered as a long-known result of common experience. It partially accounts for what Mr. Holley has called the "intrinsically ridiculous factor of safety of six." Another "long-known result of experience "-although this has not, as the writer believes, been investigated by scientific experimenters-is the fact that rupture may be caused by a succession of shocks or impacts, none of which alone would be sufficient to cause it. Wrought iron will crystallize by repeated blows in service and become weaker than cast iron. Iron axles, the piston-rods of steam-hammers, and other pieces of metal subject to continuously repeated shocks invariably break after a certain length of service. They have a " life" which is limited. Iron rods in bridges sometimes crystallize and break, although the rods in most of our iron bridges * Strength and Determination of Dimensions of Structures. IF you wish to make the acid that is vulgarly called common aqua fortis,* for parting gold from silver, you must first provide as many cucurbits and alembics, receivers, and materials as you wish, and then make a furnace that is long and conveniently wide for holding three or four pairs of cucurbits or as many as you wish. If you have to make this by art in order to work a large quantity, you could make several small furnaces for it seems that not more than three or four pairs are suitable for one. Prepare the places where the cucurbits are to stand with bottoms or covers made of potter's clay or tiles that are half round like the bottoms of the cucurbits and have a little rim around the top so that they can be built in. Proceed to build these in in pairs, one by the other with convenient spaces between, placing an iron support across to make this place stronger and more secure. In every corner and also in the middle a hole must be made as a vent for the smoke, as is done in all furnaces. You will see the form of this somewhat roughly drawn here. [Figure 25] Near this prepare a number of cucurbits which are made of glass, as clear and uniform as possible and very well formed. There must be no bubbles or other indentations in these, for they would be dangerous and uncertain for your work. Lute these with lutum sapientiae up to within three dita or less from where the neck narrows. This lute must be spread out well all over to the thickness of two threads or a little more. Then cover and make them strong with this well-made plaster, and finally dry it, taking care that there are no clefts or cracks such as clays are often prone to make even though they be well prepared. A FEW notes on the occurrence and significance of mud volcanoes in Colombia may be of interest at the present time, owing to the renewed activity in geological exploration of, the coastal regions bordering the Caribbean Sea. The best-known volcanoes are found a few miles from the seacoast. One is situated to the south of Puerto Colombia; the second, to the east: of Cartagena near the village of Turbaco; and the third, near the village of Puerto Escondido south of the Sinu River. Others. are reported in more inaccessible localities. Usually they stand 2 1/2 or 3 ft. (0.762 or 0.914 m.) above the surrounding ground at the crater, though several craters from 10 to 20 ft. (3.04 to 6.09 m.,) apart will often build up an extensive mound at low gradient. The shallow mound may cover 1/2 or 3/4 acre (0.2 to 0.3 ha.) with an elevation of 12 or 15 ft. (3.65 or 4.57 m.) at the center. The craters are formed of hardened blue clay; the inside diameters vary from 14 to 24 in. (35.56 to 60.96 cm.). The rim is continuous, except on one side where there is usually a cut 3 or 4 in. deep, thus allowing an overflow. The craters are filled to the rim-cut- with a thick mixture of blue clay mud and water, which is kept in agitation by escaping gas. Fig. 1 shows the bubble in the act of bursting and Fig. 2 the appearance of the surface of the viscous fluid a second or so later. The frequency of the explosions is determined by the weight of the column of fluid in the neck of the volcano, consequently, such explosions are not synchronous in a group of craters. Ordinarily, there are two or three explosions in about 3' minutes. The supply of gas is small but steady and sufficient pressure must accumulate before the bubble can enter the column of fluid. The water is derived from the surface and enters the sedimentary strata not` far distant from the volcano. During long dry seasons, as the supply of water fails the volcano dries and geyser action ceases.
