The following notes, prepared in 1908, as the result of a personal examination and extensive explorations under my direction in 1906, have been revised and greatly augmented after two subsequent visits and further explorations in 1910. The hard iron-ores of the south coast of Oriente Province, in the island of Cuba, have been known for many years, in fact one mine has been in operation for more than 20 years; but it is only within the past four years that the large mantle-deposits of brown ores of the north coast have attracted serious attention. A. C, Spencer' has described these ores in a paper, entitled Three Deposits of Iron Ore in Cuba, which refers to the Mayari, Moa, and Cubitas deposits. C. M. Weld,2 in a scholarly paper, The Residual Brown Iron-Ores of Cuba, has discussed the character and possible genesis of these deposits with particular reference to the Moa field, calling attention also to the Taco and Navas fields in addition to those described by Spencer. Descriptive articles with reference to the Mayari field, and a few words about the Moa deposit, have also appeared3 It is the purpose of the present paper to give some account of the exploration of the Moa deposit arid to call attention to its commercial importance. THE Anaconda company has never indulged in any employee activities at Butte which might be termed paternalistic, but it has exerted a vast amount of effort in care of its employees during working hours. The reason for this policy is not lack of interest or that the company does not feel the effect of employees' activities while they are "off the job"; it is that the company and the city of Butte have grown up together and, each has been adequate in its own sphere, the company in providing employment at the highest possible wage and the city in providing housing, sanitation, commercial services, medical services, schools, churches, amusements and entertainments. The one exception to this independence between the company and the community is the Butte Water Co., which is a wholly owned sub-sidiary of the Anaconda Copper Mining Co. Mention of this relationship is made here because the water supply of such a city as Butte is one of the principal factors in determining the health of the people. Very early in the development of the Anaconda company an adequate and dependable water supply for the operations became necessary, therefore the company took over this important community function. So well has this activity worked out that during the whole period of time covered, in which the company has expanded to become practically the sole mine operator and the community has grown from a small mining camp to the status of a modern city, there has been no shortage of water or any outbreak of water-borne, epidemic disease.

In 1961, a research program started at Columbia into the mechanical aspects of flotation,* and certain ends are now in view. The purpose of this note is to explain these tentative conclusions in the hope of stimulating discussion and eliciting new data, especially industrial data, with which to test the views expressed. The variables presently under consideration are impeller rotational speed, N, volumetric air rate, Q, and impeller diameter, D, the latter being the parameter chosen to designate cell size. THE GRADE AND RECOVERY SURFACES With a given ore, chemical treatment, and flotation machine, both grade, G, and recovery, R, are functions of N and Q. The GNQ and RNQ relationships are best viewed in terms of three-dimensional surfaces (Fig. 1) which are experimentally determinate.2 TO maintain grade at an acceptably high level, it is necessary for N and Q to lie within certain limits, and similarly with recovery. At the recent SME Fall Meeting in Salt Lake City, Robert M. Jimeson, Physical Science Administrator of the U.S. Bureau of Mines, cited the research programs underway in the Bureau's Division of Coal Research, and outlined their current status. These research programs have been selected by the Division because of their relative value and high probability of success in contributing to the conservation of the Nation's coal and to the expanded use of coal in current or new markets. Since about 50% of coal consumption in the United States is in the production of electric power, 20% in production of metallurgical coke, and over 20 % by industry in producing process steam and power, the Bureau has placed much emphasis on research that will maintain coal's leadership in these established areas. This emphasis is reflected in the projects discussed on these pages. Bear in mind that this survey is not all-inclusive. Other projects underway include studies on furnace performance factors, improved burner design, and other critical boiler work which can be used immediately by industry to improve efficiency of current practices in power generation; other investigations are aimed at reducing fireside deposits and corrosion of boiler and super- heater tubes, fly ash utilization, and control of SO, from flue gases (a major step in preventing air pollution). These plus many other projects during the past years have served to focus attention on the fact that the U. S. Bureau of Mines is presently making the largest single contribution to this Nation's coal research effort.

White, "The Mining Town," Alta California August 18,1873 INTRODUCTION One of the most important aspects of mineral enterprises of US corporations is the influence of the depletion allowance on cash flow. This allowance permits mineral producers to claim sizable federal income tax deductions not available to other industries, and these deductions significantly increase cash flows in mining. In the past several years the minerals depletion allowance has come under increasingly heavy fire from many sectors as a tax loophole that deprives the federal government of large amounts of revenue. One estimate of the loss of tax dollars in 1968 was $2.25 billion due to depletion deductions and intangible expenses in the oil industry. Largely on the basis of such arguments, the Tax Reform Act of 1969 reduced percentage depletion rates for a number of minerals, and the Tax Reduction Act of 1975 totally eliminated statutory depletion for most oil and gas. In regard to percentage depletion for hard minerals, the federal government has estimated its resulting loss of revenue at $1.75 billion for 1980. The TEFRA legislation of 1982 further reduced the statutory depletion allowance available to iron ore, coal, and lignite beginning in 1984. Thus, it is clear that minerals engineers and managers should have a thorough knowledge of the origin, evolution, justification, and computational procedures relating to the depletion allowance. The Tintic Division of Kennecott Copper Corporation operates the Burgin Mine in the East Tintic District near Eureka, Utah, approximately 75 miles south of Salt Lake City. The Division was organized in 1963 to develop concealed replacement orebodies in the area located by Bear Creek Mining Company, Kennecott's domestic exploration subsidiary. Several accounts of the discovery of these orebodies and the general geology of the area have been given (1, 2). The ore is very complex and of varying degrees of oxidation and alteration. The principal metal values are lead, zinc, silver, and cadmium. The Burgin No. 2 shaft was sunk in 1963 to provide access for mining the orebodies. Much of the ore mined after this shaft was sunk was high grade and shipped directly to smelters, but concurrently it was recognized that concentration would be required to upgrade the lower grade ore in the deposits. Accordingly, in January 1967, authorization was received to construct a 500 tpd concentrator. From the beginning it was expected that the characteristics of the mill feed would vary widely and unpredictably as mining progressed. This paper summarizes the characteristics of the ore, the test work upon which the plant design was based, the engineering and construction, and the present operation of the facility eighteen months after startup. Two epiclastic horizons in an Archean volcanic sequence host the gold occurrences on the Dunraine property near Wawa, Ontario, Canada. The Grace horizon of cherty and pelitic tuff strikes northnorthwest and dips east. Native gold occurs with arsenopyrite in bedlike and podlike bodies of quartz lenses and stringers set in a pelitic matrix. The Parkhill horizon of lithic graywacke with associated flow-breccia strikes southwest and dips south, Native gold occurs with minor sulfides in similar bodies of quartz erratic within the Parkhill horizon. The auriferous bodies occupy paleotopographic channels and troughs within the two horizons. The former producers are the Parkhill mine with 1689 kg (54,300 oz) Au, Darwin mine with 473 kg (15,200 oz) Au, and Van Sickle mine with 48 kg (1536 oz) Au between 1902 and 1944. The gold occurrences are syndepositional with the host volcanic sediments laid during a pause in explosive volcanism. Fumaroles along steep gullies on the flank of a subaqueous volcanic center precipitated aprons of auriferous silica-sulfide mud. Downslope slumping resulted in exhalative debris flows; gold concentrated in flexures and depressions along slumpage channels. Renewed explosive volcanism covered the auriferous sediments with pyroclastic tuffs, arresting the slumping of in situ fumarolic deposits.

FoR many years the copper-bearing steels have been of considerable interest to the metallurgist because of their corrosion-resistant properties. More recently the discovery of their definite age-hardening characteristics has focused attention on them again. In a recent paper, Smith and Palmer(l)† have given an admirable description of the behavior of a considerable number of steels of this type and a study of their results suggests two questions of a more or less fundamental sort. In the first place, it has been plainly shown that the hardening effect of added copper does not increase up to the maximum solubility of copper in iron as given by earlier investigators, but reaches its greatest value considerably below this point. This fact suggests that either the solubility is not so great as previous investigators have stated, or that the age-hardening mechanism is not the simple precipitation phenomenon that has been postulated. In the second place, the nature of the aging mechanism in this particular system should be determined. Recent developments in the study of age-hardening processes have shown that the increase of hardness is often, but not always, accompanied by precipitation and the action of a particular system is not predictable on the basis of its components or type of phase diagram. It would be of considerable interest to study the aging of the iron-rich iron-copper alloys in detail. One would like to know whether the aging mechanism is different at high and low aging temperatures, and whether the extreme sluggishness of the system may perhaps represent some new type of aging process. The experiments to be described were carried out in an endeavor to answer these questions. Obviously, in such experiments it is important to confine the hardening effect to the single element, copper, so that iron and copper of high purity must be used in the preparation of specimens. The following article presents notes and data compiled and computed by the writer for use in the determination of: size and slope of mill launders, details of junction boxes and downspouts, and distribution of pulp. It also includes pulp formulas, volume of discharge through bushings, paths of discharging streams, banking of turns and curves. In the design of a concentrating mill, the draftsman usually considers launders to the extent of providing ample "head" for transmission of pulp from one department of the mill to another. The superintendent of construction aims to build his launders wide and deep, and on a slope steep enough to ensure positive flow. So launders are laid generally on too steep a slope, with the result that the repair gang works to maintain launder bottoms and sides against the erosive action of the conveyed pulp. To this end many kinds of liners have been devised: concrete, mastic, white iron, glass, rubber. True, the reduction of slope to the point where a pulp will flow with minimum wear, will minimize labor and expense; but when the desired slope is not predetermined, the millman hesitates to readjust his launder slopes by cut-and-try methods. To the end that the desired size and slope may be found readily, the writer has: (1) conducted experiments with pulps of different specific gravity, screen analysis and dilution; (2) gathered a few graphic data from standard reference works (such as Peele's Mining Engineer's Handbook and Taggart's Handbook of Ore Dressing); (3) computed several tables; and compiled results that have proved dependable for Utah Copper ore. It is quite possible that the following tables and graphs may not be applicable to all ores, but it is hoped that they may prove helpful, even in slight degree, in alleviating a portion of the trouble and migraine of some other millman. An etching technique.has been used to investigate the dislocation structure of deformed @-brass single crystals. Isolated single ended pileups have been observed, and it is shown that, in certain cases, the configurations of such pileups agree with theoretical predictions. Many discrete pileups within heavily deformed regions have also been detected and the influence of surrounding dislocations on these groups are reported and discussed. Divergences between the experimental and theoretical spacings in the isolated pileups and the origin of the stress maintaining the pileups are discussed. THE spatial configuration of a linear array of identical dislocations has been evaluated theoretically by Eshelby, Frank, and Nabarro.' Of particular interest is the equilibrium spacing of a series of dislocations under a uniform shear sti-ess when the leading dislocation is held fixed in the lattice; such an array is termed a single ended pileup. Eshelby, Frank, and Nabarro' found that an explicit analytical solution to the problem of n dislocations in a pileup is not possible, but they were able to derive approximate formulae applicable under various limiting conditions. An alternative method of determining the equilibrium configuration was proposed by Leibfried and Leibfried and Haasen in which the discrete dislocations are replaced by a continuous dislocation density. This technique was used by Head and Louat to solve in first approximation, a number of problems of particular interest, eg., single and double ended pileups. Head has also solved numerically a number of specific configurations involving up to six dislocations. Recently Kuhlmann-Wilsdorf has obtained numerical solutions for single-ended pileups containing between three and seventy dislocations, thus making possible a comparison between appropriate experimental results and accurate theoretical values. The considerable use of the pileup concept in theories of plastic flow has stimulated a number of attempts to observe such arrays experimentally. There is of course considerable intrinsic value in revealing an isolated pileup because a direct check on the elastic theory of dislocations then becomes possible. The only technique generally applicable for studying pileups in bulk metal specimens is selective etching of the point of emergence of individual dislocations. IN making gold alloys possessing certain physical properties, such important factors as corrosion resistance, color, hardness and melting points must be considered. All of these requirements depend directly upon the composition. It is possible to obtain the same colored gold alloy by using different compositions, but in doing so one may bring in some undesirable property. Other investigations have been carried on in this field by F. E. Carter,1 E. M. Wise,2 and L. Sterner-Rainer.3 To make a complete study of the effect of composition upon these properties, a systematic investigation was carried on involving a range of copper content from 85 to 65 per cent. Elements such as zinc, silver and nickel were used to replace in part the copper content. The gold content in all the alloys remained constant. Only 10-karat gold alloys of those containing 41.6 per cent gold will be considered. All of the alloys were made in an induction furnace. Each alloy was cast in a 3 by ¼ by ¾ -in. ingot. The method of obtaining the melting points and making color determinations was described in a previous paper.4 The Rockwell B scale with the ball and 100-kg. weight was used for all hardness determinations. The submersion of test pieces in concentrated nitric acid is one of the standard corrosion tests used in the optical trade. A test piece in the 50 per cent cold-worked condition, ½ by 2 by 0.043 in., is blanked from a strip using a. die, and the weight, loss per square inch of surface is taken as a means of comparison. The time for this test is 2 ½ hr. of actual sub-mersion of the test piece in the acid. This standard test was applied to all of the 10-karat gold alloys discussed in this paper. The tensile tests were made upon strips of the dimensions shown in Fig. 1. The test pieces after blanking were annealed at 1300° F. for 20 min. and cooled in air. The "drop of the beam" method was used in determining the yield point, as there was a very marked "drop" when the yield point was reached.

In previous studies of grain boundary migration in zone-refined lead, the authors used bicrystal specimens consisting of a striated crystal which was grown from the melt, and an adjacent striation-free crystal, introduced by artificial nucleation and growth.1 While this method permits the study of the motion of individual grain boundaries, it does not provide control of the relative orientations of the grains. The present note will describe a technique for controlling the orientations of the two crystals in this type of specimen. The technique consists essentially of placing a striated crystal and a striation-free crystal of controlled orientations end-to-end in a graphite trough, then melting a short zone at the junction of the two crystals and allowing it to freeze to form the desired grain boundary. The apparatus used to carry out this process is illustrated in Fig. 1. It consists of a trough milled from high-purity graphite,with grooves in the underside for the placement of thermocouples. The graphite piece fans out on one end at the level of the bottom of the trough; the sides of the trough are completed in this region by the attachment of a mating plate with a slot cut at any desired angle to permit reorientation of the crystal placed at this end of the assembly. The joint between the crystals is made at or near the point where the slotted plate joins the rest of the trough. The thermocouple slots are deepened in this region so that the thermocouples are separated from the melt by only 1/32 in. of graphite. An induction heater, with suitable temperature control, is used to obtain the molten zone. The two single crystals used are first chemically polished in a solution consisting of eight parts glacial acetic acid and two parts 30 pct hydrogen peroxide. They are then placed in the trough with the ends to be joined at the position of the thermocouples. Next, cooling is applied to the two crystals by means of air

A necessary condition for a uniaxial stress distribution in compression testing is that the specimen end surfaces make full contact with the apparatus compression plates. In addition all compression surfaces must be machined perpendicularly to the loading axis. In general this condition is not sufficiently fulfilled in a simple apparatus. Therefore on application of the load the compression plate may first touch the specimen at one point only. This may cause crumbling of the specimen if the material under investigation is brittle (e.g., ionic crystals). It also precludes a precise study of the beginning of deformation as the effective cross sectional area is unknown. In addition a complex stress state is set up which renders quantitative work impossible, e.g., on dislocation density and arrangement as a function of stress. To overcome these difficulties a "self-adjusting" upper compression plate is required. A simple and reliable method of achieving this is shown in Fig. 1: A steel hemisphere is placed on the specimen. As soon as the compression plate (which no longer needs precise machining) makes contact with this hemisphere the load is uniformly distributed over the whole specimen surface, and a homogeneous uniaxial state of stress results. An advantage of the method is that the loading is always central, even when the specimen surface is not parallel to the compression plate (Fig. 1, dashed line). Therefore to a first approximation a uniaxial state of stress is maintained if the misorientation of the specimen end surface is small. Two typical stress strain curves of identically prepared sodium chloride crystals are shown in Fig. 2; curve 1 was taken without and curve II with the hemisphere under otherwise identical conditions. The improvement in the accuracy of defining the beginning of elastic and plastic deformation is clearly indicated. Proration in the petroleum industry has come to mean a method for curtailing the production of crude petroleum by artificial effort, and it is in this sense that the term is employed throughout this paper. Although a contrived curb on supply has been invoked at various times in the past in particular fields and to meet specific situations, it is not until the past few years that this procedure has become general and assumed a dominant role in the oil business. In the sense that we now understand it, proration had its inception in the Seminole area of Oklahoma in 1927, from which time and place the practice spread to include practically all the flush oil fields of the country, especially those of California, Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas. At present there is perhaps no phase of the oil business that commands more attention than proration, nor one that engages more time and effort on the part of executives in the business. The practice of proration, indeed, has not only become an integral part of the policy of most companies and operators, but it has also taken on the aspects of a "movement" involving two schools of thought with considerable feeling, and at times some bitterness, on both sides. In this atmosphere it is difficult to find calm, dispassionate consideration of proration, for most discussions are either vigorous exhortations by its proponents, or else sharp condemnations by its opponents; although it appears that the majority of the industry is clearly "in favor of" proration. It is hoped that this analysis will be taken as an attempt to appraise the movement as an economic force, without bias and without regard to the incidence of the conclusions upon any preconceptions that the industry may entertain. Sparry dolomite from all of the operating mines in the Viburnum Trend of Southeast Missouri have been found by cathodoluminescence microscopy to reveal a systematic pattern of banding resulting from a growth zoning within individual dolomite rhombs. Four principal bands have been recognized throughout the entire Trend and each of the major bands contain even finer internal banding. Minor bands a few microns in width can be correlated in specimens collected ten's of kilometers apart along the trend. The first three principal dolomite bands decrease from south to north. This feature, together with the fact that the white sparry dolomite crystals decrease in abundance from south to north in the Trend, suggests that a major source for the fluids was from the south. The application of cathodoluminescence microscopy to crystalline dolomite demonstrates a strong correlation between ore grade and the intensity of internal banding and dissolution textures.

MANY of the auriferous placers of the arid Southwest differ widely from the standard types of stream and eluvial deposits of more humid regions, although exhibiting some of the features of each. This diver-gence in characteristics is of geological and economic importance and appears sufficient to warrant the consideration of these placers as a class distinct from both stream and eluvial deposits. It is hoped that the consideration of these auriferous gravels as a distinct type of deposit will facilitate recognition of morphological and economic features that might remain obscure if these deposits were viewed in the light of stream or eluvial placers whose type locality is a more humid environment. "Bajada placer" is proposed as the designation for this type of placer deposit. Bajada is the Spanish term for slope and is used locally in the Southwest to indicate the lower slope of a mountain range, the portion consisting of rock debris and standing at a much lower angle than the rock slope of the range proper. It has been used in a geologic sense by Schrader1 and others. The type locality of bajada placers is the Sonoran Desert,2 where they occur on the bajada or rock debris slope of desert ranges. Stream placers are represented in the Southwest, but most of them lie within the mountain topographic province, the Mexican Highlands2 section of, the Basin and Range physiographic province. Eluvial placers may occur in the mountainous semiarid Mexican Highlands but are almost unknown in the extremely arid Sonoran Desert, as mountain slopes are generally too steep to permit the accumulation of any considerable mantle of residual debris. Since their salient distinctions are almost wholly the result of formation under conditions of extreme aridity, bajada placers are largely confined to the Sonoran Desert, although a few occur in the adjacent Mexican High-lands. They may be modified by the action of ephemeral streams, in which case the placer gravels of these arroyas approach stream placers in type and habit of occurrence, but their relation to an arid environment and the bajada type is usually apparent.

As the world's demand for iron ore increases and available sources are depleted, increasing attention will be centered on deposits in the Quebec and Labrador portions of the Labrador Trough. Improvements in the beneficiation of low grade iron ore stimulate exploration for deposits amenable to concentration. This study is centered on the Mt. Wright-Lake Carheil area, lying between Wabush Lake and Mt. Reed in Quebec. Described in detail are the general lithology, structural and economic geology, and mineralogy of the iron-formation. The iron ore province of Quebec and Baffin Island extends from the southern shore of Baffin Island southeasterly through the Labrador Trough to Matonipi Lake, approximately 185 miles northwest of Seven Islands. (See Fig. 1.) Future geologic field studies will very likely extend the limits of the province to include the ferruginous and associated rocks of the Lake Mistassini area. At present, only the deposits near Knob Lake and Lake Jeannine (Mt. Reed) have been brought into production although in the near future several other properties including those at Wabush Lake will commence operations. Within the next decade or so, as the world's demand for iron ore increases and available sources are depleted, this region will undoubtedly become a major mining district. Initial reports of iron-rich rocks in Labrador date back to the investigations undertaken by A. P. Low near the turn of the century. During the ensuing years the country was prospected chiefly for precious and nonferrous base metals because of its inaccessibility and the low tenor of the iron ore. In 1945 an evaluation of the direct shipping ores near Knob Lake indicated that sufficient reserves were present to justify the enormous capital expenditure required to bring the deposits into production. Initial open-pit mining began in 1954 following the construction of a townsite, a 360-mile long railway to Seven Islands, and an elaborate loading dock. Recent improvements in the beneficiation of low-grade iron ore have stimulated widespread exploration for deposits amenable to concentration, particularly along the southwest extension of the Trough. The Mt. Wright-Lake Carheil area, bounded by longitudes 66O45' and 67 30' west and latitudes 52 30' and 52 45' north, is a nearly rectangular tract of slightly less than 500 sq miles. It is in Saguenay County, 174 miles north-northwest of Seven Islands (see Fig. 1). Except for the periods of the spring breakup and the fall freeze up, the area is readily accessible by air.

The data given in the paper were collected to furnish an idea of the amount required in various operations of bituminous mining to produce a ton of coal, the plants selected being well-managed ones. With these are included some figures compiled from U. S. Coal Commission's report showing the average amount of labor in various classes of mines. THE information contained in the following paper was collected at the request of the U. S. Coal Commission, and is, published with the permission of that body and of the various companies furnishing the data. For obvious reasons, the names of the companies are not given. No data were gotten from States south of Virginia or west of the Mississippi River. The data about the amount of labor, in man-hours, required in producing a ton of bituminous coal have been collected with the idea of showing what is being done at some well-managed plants, and not to show the average amount required by all mines, which undoubtedly is considerably higher than the average of the figures shown.* Almost all of the figures were supplied by the various companies in reply to a questionnaire; when they were obtained from other sources the company was asked to verify them. On account of the amount of work required, the data were only requested for one or two months for each plant, and the figures represent in each case a month when the car supply was good and the work was practically steady. In the case of most of the West Virginia and Kentucky mines, these conditions were best met in May and June, 1922. The mines for which the figures are given are arranged by states and as to whether the mine operates under union or non-union or open-shop conditions. The union mines listed are generally considered to be as well-managed as are the non-union ones. The production per month in a few cases includes the amount of slate which is loaded and hauled out of the mine, as of course this requires nearly as much labor per ton as does the coal.
