THE maps of our large mines are usually prepared with the greatest care; and it is somewhat singular that, in comparison with the great amount of time and money spent in surveying and platting, so little actual use is made of them. Almost the only purpose for which a completed survey-map is afterwards consulted, is the determination of the relative position of the different workings to each other, and to the boundary-lines of the property. After the completion of such a map, it should be made the beginning of another, and in most cases a far more important, undertaking, namely, its utilization as -a starting-point for a complete inventory of the company's underground possessions. The ordinary mine-survey map, being nothing but a record of what has been done, is, in one sense, only ancient history. To increase its value, such additions should be made as will render it a complete statement of the amount and value of ore in sight at any particular time, and a guide for future develop¬ments. Comparatively little extra labor is involved in this undertaking, since the larger and most expensive part of the work has already been completed when the mine has been surveyed and mapped. The necessary additions consist in working out, and platting on the maps, the geology of the mine as exposed in the workings, in such a manner that the geological survey may be of daily use in the development and operation of the mine. The first step towards the production of a geological map consists in tracing individual level-sheets from the general or composite map. The area to be included, outside of the property in question, will depend very much on local conditions; but, for geological, legal and commercial reasons, it should be extended as far as reasonably practicable. THIS report is the first of a series planned by The Mineral Inquiry, organized by the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers to make factual studies of the world's mineral resources in their political and international relations. The efforts of The Inquiry are directed toward filling certain notable gaps in available information, without duplication of many other investigations touching this field which are being conducted by other organizations, public and private. Much of its work is indirect-suggesting topics for study by other individuals and organizations and aiding in their planning and correlation. The present report is designed to show the nationality of the commercial control of mineral resources, in addition to the geographic distribution of production by nation-in other words, the overlapping of political and commercial control. Detailed accuracy cannot be claimed for the figures presented. For some companies division of ownership by nationality has been very difficult to ascertain, as many companies are reluctant to dis-close the extent of their holdings in other corporations, and the impossi-bility of tracing all stock ownership is obvious. Also there are frequent changes in the distribution of. stock control. The percentages given rep-resent only the participation that has been identified definitely, even though it is known in some cases with fair certainty that larger interests exist, as, for instance, American participation in foreign chromite companies. In bringing together these figures we have had the cordial co-operation of the United States Bureau of Mines, the United States Geologi-cal Survey, the Mineral Division of the Bureau of Foreign and Domestic Commerce, the Brookings Institution, and of many specialists connected with the mineral industries covered. The report does not cover the entire list of minerals. Coal, although it is one of the most important minerals, was omitted because , not more than one or two per cent of the world's production comes from mines that are owned by companies foreign to the countries where the coal is produced. Others, such as gold, are omitted because sufficient data have not yet been accumulated. It is hoped that some of these may be covered in subsequent reports. It is not our purpose here to discuss the significance of the figures sub-mitted, but only to point out the general nature of the problems on which they have a bearing.

Data of a known statistical quality has been successfully used in a system of conventional fluid mechanics equations essentially free of empirical "conformance factors to prediet early detailed field 03 in a reservoir where gravity drainage is important and oil and rock properties vary con. siderably. The system is useful where comparative recovery predictions for one or more cases of natural depletion and gas cap pressure maintenance are needed and the reservoir is not too heterogeneous. INTRODUCTION Many authors, have examined various facet* of the gravity drainage-gas cap pressure maintenance problem over the last several years. Two of them. Burtchaell and Elkins, have published practical studies. In the case described in the present paper the best development and operating plan for one of the important reservoirs of the Bolivar Coastal Field in Western Venezuela was urgently needed. It was requested that sound comparative economics be presented along with an engineering evaluation of no additional drilling, maximum drilling. several cases of gas pressure maintenance, of water flooding and combination cases. A rapid analysis of the effect on recovery of the range of crude and rock properties indicated that none of the published methods using average properties would yield adequate comparative predictions. This paper covers the predictive system developed to deal with natural depletion and gas cap pressure maintenance. The large amount of data available for this field permitted statistically reliable correlations to be made of most rock and oil properties, and the evident smooth areal variations of these properties encouraged the construction of a lineal mathematical model of material balance and fluid flow equations, which could be manipulated by a modified iterative procedure. The manipulation is much more adaptable to computing machines than manually operated calculators and subsequent studies have been prepared for the IBM Card Program Calculator. A matrix as opposed to linear model has been tentatively worked out by other members of our group to deal with more heterogeneous reservoirs. It is more adaptable to computers such as IBM-701 or the Remington-Rand Univac. In 1950, when the system reported below was developed, no rapid computing machines were available to the author. Their existence and promise encouraged an initial approach by hand. Some details of oil and rock Property correlation are included because there are a surprisingly large number of medium-sized reservoirs in the world that show systematic property variations which are significant for a rigorous analycon. All large reservoirs (over half a billion barrels recovery) with which the author is familiar contain at minimum a significant temperature variation. Using the rock and oil property correlations, past pressure and production, the gas-oil ratio history of the reservoir was computed and found to be in close agreement with field measurements. The future performance under cases of natural depletion, gas injection of 100 MMcf/day, and of 130 MMcf/day, was then computed; a 70 MMcf/day case was also carried far enough to provide data for comparative economics. The 130 MMcf/day case proved to be the most attractive. A 50,000 horsepower gas turbine driven centrifugal compressor plant to take this quantity of adjacent field gas from 30 to 1,950 psia and inject it into the reservoir is under construction. The total cost of the project will exceed 20 million dollars.

Chairman Dilworth stated that the Committee had been appointed to take up the question and, after reading the list of members of the Committee, pointed out that the object of the meeting was to formulate a plan of action rather than to discuss any phases of valuation, per se. To this end he presented a tentative outline of points to be considered in the future by the Committee. After a lively discussion on the desirability of inclusion of some questions in the agenda of the Committee, the following outline was adopted :

TANTALUM and columbium are newcomers in the world of metals. Many of the metals described in this volume had been known and used for centuries before either tantalum or columbium was known to exist. The scarcity of the ores and the comparative difficulty of extraction delayed their technology until specialized methods of processing could be developed. HISTORY Early in the nineteenth century, 1801, Hatchett discovered a new oxide, which he called columbium oxide, and a year later, Ekeberg announced that he had found a new element, which he named tantalum. The preparation of the metal tantalum in impure form was first announced by Berzelius in 1824, but the actual production of ductile metal did not occur until 1903, when von Bolton, of Siemens and Halske, developed a process for the production of tantalum pure enough to be drawn into electric-lamp filament wire. The use of tantalum as a filament wire began to decline when ductile tungsten was introduced in 1909. In 1921, C. W. sake, of Fansteel Metallurgical Corporation, produced the first ingot of tantalum metal in America. The first ingot of columbium was produced in 1927 in the laboratory of the same company. In 1950 the phosphate fertilizer market warranted the design and construction of a new fertilizer plant by Cominco at Kimberley, B.C. The initial rated capacity of the plant was 70,000 tons per year of high- grade ammonium phosphate. The plant was placed on-stream in 1953. One of the major problems in operating the fertilizer plant was the disposal of the gypsum tailings slurry which was a by-product of phosphoric acid manufacture. The original weight of dry tailings produced by the mill was 500 tons per day. This quantity increased over the years until a projected 2200 tpd was selected for the pond design described in this paper. The original gypsum tailing area was located south of the fertilizer plant and adjacent to the St. Mary's River. By 1965 the original disposal area had proven inadequate and Cominco's engineering staff had selected a 500 acre disposal site to the east of the plant.

It sometimes happens that old knowledge is forgotten, or half-forgotten, and its rediscovery is hailed as a great new advance in technology. Autogenous grinding affords such an example. The oldest-or apparently the oldest-commercial application of continuous autogenous grinding on a large scale outside of South Africa occurred at San Juancito, Honduras, where a total of more than two million tons of silver ore were ground autogenously with complete success from 1918 to the early 1940's. The history of the San Juancito silver deposits begins in 1880 when- the New York and Honduras Rosario Mining Co. started mining silver at a rate which soon reached two million ounces of silver annually. In 1912 the Company's first mill, located in the village of San Juancito, was shut down and its equipment transferred to a new cyanide plant. This plant, constructed on a mountainside near the mine, was equipped with tube pebble mills in which Normandy or Danish pebbles were used initially.

The Federal Bureau of Mines has developed a leach= electrolysis method for recovering lead from galena (PbS). Flotation concentrate is leached with ferric chloride (FeCl3) solution to obtain lead chloride (PbC12) and elemental sulfur, PbS + 2FeC13 -+ PbC12 + 2FeC12 + Sº. Over 99% of the P~S in the condentrate is converted to PbC12. The leach solution, composed of brine (NaC1) and FeC13, dissolves the PbC12 as it is formed, leaving a residue of elemental sulfur plus gangue. Very pure PbC12 (>99.9%).is crystallized from the leach filtrate on cool- ing and is subsequently electrolyzed in a fused-salt bath to obtain molten lead metal (>99.9% Pb). Spent leach solution (FeC12) is regenerated for further use by reaction with the chlorine obtained in the electrolysis of lead chloride, and other values, such as Ag, Cu, Zn, and Sº, are recovered by additional treatments of the leach solution and leach residue. This paper discusses results and conditions of the leaching and electrolysis operations.

The waste clay slurry produced during beneficiation of Florida phosphate ore presents a major environmental problem. The large volume of waste requires impoundment in above-ground disposal areas surrounded by earthen dams. As the result of a comprehensive research effort, three approaches to improving clay dewatering involving admixing of sand tailings have been developed. These provide satisfactory performance and appear to be compatible with the technological and economic constraints of the industry. Means of determining waste clay characteristics and analyzing mining waste disposal situations by computer simulation have been devised in support of the planning and field testing effort. Detailed examples demonstrating the applicability of the computer programs are presented.

In view of various papers and discussion.;, at recent meetings of the Institute, upon testing, methods of testing, inspectors, inspection and specifications, it has occurred to me that my experience of some fifteen years, in the making and enforcement of specifications, in connection with the Motive Power Department of the Pennsylvania Railroad, might give some value to the few suggestions offered in this paper. There is friction, not to say antagonism, between the producers and the consumers of structural materials. On the one hand, the producers complain of the severity of inspection, or the lack of knowledge and want of good judgment on the part of inspectors, and, indeed, have gone so far as to suggest the abolition of the whole scheme of inspecting and testing materials. On the other hand, the consumers are, apparently, more and more relying on specifications

The type of security arid loan documentation required for such financing is described, together with a broad analysis of their content and the manner in which the various risks involved in development are apportioned among the sponsors and lenders. THE Juneau gold belt is divided into ore-bands of poor definition. The most easterly workings on the , belt, those of the Alaska Gastineau Co., disclosed three separate bands: the Footwall or Ground-hog band, 70 ft. wide; the Perseverance band on which the recent mining was done, also 70 ft. wide; and the No. 2 band, 100 ft. wide. These bands, aggregating 240 ft., are found over a width of 2000 ft. Going toward the west into the adjoining Alaska Juneau ground, four bands have been found which have a total 'right-angle thickness of 755 ft. These bands are convergent in their westerly trend and terminate on the plane of Silver Bow fault. The four bands have better definition at the fault plane than at the eastern boundary line where they enter the property. -Along the property line, the width of the bands and intervening country is 1600 ft., and at the Silver Bow fault this width is reduced to 1300 ft. The distance from the eastern property line to Silver Bow fault is 2400 ft. The bands are slate or slate with metagabbro intrusions, together with gold-bearing quartz masses, stringers, and gash veins. The bands themselves are not all ore, but all commercial .ore is found within the bands. They have no uniform width either in horizontal or vertical section. The necessity for getting more water into sands of low permeability in any secondary-recovery water-flood operation in order to recover all the available oil always has been a major problem. In the early days of water-flooding the addition of soda ash and caustic soda to fresh input waters was recommended and tried without success in the Bradford field. The most frequent difficulty was sand plugging. The use of natural and artificial brines often has been suggested for water-flooding, in the belief that laboratory observations of decreasing fresh-water throughput rates in measuring water permeabilities of consolidated sand cores might be partially explained by swelling of clays. A review of available literature bearing on the subject and related laboratory experiments are presented herein, offering an explanation for failure in use of soda ash and caustic soda waters and supporting the recent concept that every water used for input purposes in the secondary recovery of oil should possess such physical and chemical characteristics as to keep the clay content of the producing sands in a permanently flocculated condition. Produced brines meet this requirement. Their use is recommended as a means of increasing intake rates of tight sands and oil recoveries, as a solution to brine-disposal problems, and as a means of conserving a natural resource. Introduction There is a general belief among those engaged in the secondary recovery of oil by water-flooding that one of the most important requirements for the success of any such project is an adequate supply of good, fresh water. Fresh waters have the advantages of being more easily stabilized than salt waters and of being usable about the lease for all purposes. The use of brines for water-flooding never has been given much consideration in the Pennsylvania Grade area. The use of brines in Mid-Continent operations has been considered largely as a substitute for fresh waters, which were economically unobtainable for many operations. Estimated recoveries for some water-drive fields indicate that less of the original oil in place will be left upon abandonment than with the above-average practices used in Pennsylvania Grade water-flood operations. Lower residual oil saturations than 25 pct of the pore space following the water-flooding of Third Bradford sand cores in the laboratory are unusual. In comparison, water-flushed sands surrounding any virgin oil pool are found to be practically devoid of oil. Such lower natural residual oil saturations may be the result of a time factor much longer than economic under artificial water-flood operations, but neither the producer of primary oil nor the producer of oil by secondary recovery can obtain maximum recoveries unless full advantage is taken of all natural forces and

A simple and general method is described for melting and zone refining refractory metals by induction heating on a specially shaped water-cooled copper crucible. The crucible is the essential part of the apparatus and is placed horizontally. It consists of either a copper plate, or a flattened tube, or of several parallel small diameter tubes all water cooled. The charge lies on the crucible, or whenever possible, is suspended above it. This assembly goes into a transparent quartz tube and the whole is passed through the coil of a radio frequency generator. Vaarious atmospheres can be used. No contamination is detected from the copper crucible. purification is obtained both by selective evaporation of impurities and by zone refining. METHODS of melting and refining relatively large ingots of all reactive and refractory metals as well as some semiconductor materials have been developed in this laboratory during the past several years using induction heating and cold crucibles. These methods are simple and permit the use of a variety of starting materials in preparing ingots of suitable shapes. Among these methods, two are of particular interest. One deals only with the problem of melting without contamination. In this method the induction coil has a specially designed shape and acts simultaneously as heating element and crucible. The second goes one step further, being designed for both melting and further purification of the refractory metals. The aim of this paper is to describe the second method which is of more general interest and of greater applicability to metallurgical problems. A) THE PRINCIPLE OF THE MELTING AND PURIFICATION METHOD As originally proposed by one of us1 the method consists of heating a charge of any refractory metal or semiconductor material to the melting point on a water-cooled copper crucible by passing both the charge and the crucible through the induction coil of a radiofrequency generator. Although both are subjected to the same induction field, one achieves the melting of a refractory metal on a copper crucible even when the refractory metal has a melting point of more than 2000°C above that of the crucible. This seemingly "odd" method works effectively for the following reasons. Because of its high electrical and thermal conductivity as compared with the material being melted, copper can be used as the crucible and kept at a low temperature while the material is heated by induction to its melting point. With water Silver and other highly conducting materials can also be used. If a nonconducting material is contemplated, e.g. SiO or a high polymer, a very thin wall should provide efficient cooling. cooling through ducts in the crucible its temperature can be kept between 40" to 70°C; thus its electrical resistivity is kept low, while the resistivity of the charge increases rapidly as its temperature is increased. B) APPARATUS The crucible is the essential part of the apparatus. It has been designed in various shapes depending on the atmosphere used, whether vacuum or an inert gas or hydrogen. In all crucible designs an effort was made to reduce its volume to "nothing but the cooling water" in order to avoid shielding the ingot from the induction field. In practice it is either a

In the development of a fluid -operated hammer drill' for accelerated penetration of hard rock formations in oil wells, a research investigation was conducted to evaluate the percussion effects obtained with different design characteristics and to determine the possibilities of percussion in the low frequency range. Tests were conducted on granite blocks and comparable impact forces were measured with a load cell under selected test conditions. These full-scale laboratory tests provided an evaluation of the effectiveness of percussion which was further supported by actual downhole field performance. While much pertinent data have been presented by other investigators the method of evaluation described in this article resulted in good correlation between laboratory and field performance and may be applicable in other low frequency percussion developments. EXPERIMENTAL METHOD For these tests the bit was held stationary and the test block was rotated and forced upward against the bit by a hydraulically-lifted rotary table. "Weight on bit" was calculated from pressure readings on the fluid system of the lifting cylinders—corrected for tare and friction. Percussion was obtained with several tubular hammers of different weights up to 320 lb. These were lifted mechanically and allowed to drop by gravity from various heights onto a slidably-mounted bit sub or "floating anvil" for calibration of the load cell response with known kinetic energy of the hammers. During evaluation of percussion effects, the hammers were hydraulically operated to provide a range of percussion frequencies up to 1,020 blows per minute delivered to the anvil. To obtain comparable test readings, the load cell of the strain gauge type, was attached to the bottom of the anvil or bit sub in place of the bit. The load cell rested on a typical granite test block mounted on the drilling table. The latter was hydraulically supported as in the actual drilling operation. The effect of support resistance was the same for all tools when calibrating. Impact forces so determined werethusdirectly comparable with one another for the purposes of this investigation. When a roller bit was substituted for the load cell for actual drilling, the impact force would probably be reduced due to the resiliency of the bit body, legs. cones and teeth and the penetration of the teeth into the rock. However, since the bits and rock specimens were uniform in these tests, an evaluation of actual tool performance, in terms of parameters previously determined with the load cell at the selected standard conditions of calibration, proved satisfactory. Throughout these tests, 8¾-in. standard tricone, hard rock toothed roller bits and carbide-insert roller bits were used. Rotary speeds were 50 and 100 rpm; static weight on bit was applied up to 40,000 Ib, and percussion frequencies up to 1,020 blows per minute were available. During this investigation it was found that toothed bits on which the teeth had developed flat ends about 3/16 in. wide did not change appreciably for the duration of a test. Hence, all toothed bits used in this study were in this condition. Conventional reference curves obtained in these tests show that increasing weight on hit by 2:1 yielded an increased penetration rate of approximately 2.7:1, while an increase in rotary speed of 2:1 netted an increased penetration rate of roughly 1.7:l. Results are thus of the same order as those reported for hard rock drilling by other investigators." CALIBRATION Under the selected standard test conditions previously described, with the lifting table hydraulically supported, and the anvil interposed between hammer and load cell, the hammers were dropped from known heights. Thus, with the kinetic energy of the hammer known, the corresponding maximum impact force shown by the cell was determined. (It may be of passing interest to note here that special drop tests with the hammers showed that no appreciable reduction in impact force resulted from introduction of the anvil or hit sub.) From these calibrations, it was possible to determine the theoretical kinetic energy available in the hammer from the maximum impact force shown by the load cell while operat-

ASH in coal has always been regarded as an undesirable substance, as the heat content of a coal decreases in direct proportion to its ash content. It represents so much inert material that has to be transported, handled when the coal is burned, and finally disposed of. W. R. Roberts, in an address before the Engineers' Society of Western Pennsylvania, Pittsburgh, on Sept. 29, 1925, said that on an annual output of five hundred million tons of coal, a reduction of 3 per cent. of ash means fifteen million tons of refuse and a decrease of $30,000,000 in freight charges. Ash also often prevents efficient utilization of the coal through the formation of clinker caused by the melting of the ash constituents when subjected to heat. The mineral constituents of coal may be of such nature as to make the coal unsuited for specific uses, as for instance, high-sulfur coal for making metallurgical coke. While the usual proximate analysis of coal gives the amount of ash, it gives no information as to the nature and composition of the ash nor of the mineral constituents from which the ash is produced. For the efficient washing of coal to remove ash-forming constituents it is desirable to know the composition and distribution of the ash-forming constituents. Obviously such information is also desirable for the most efficient utilization of coal.

A THOROUGHLY modern coal-handling system has been installed at the Pittsburgh Terminal R. R. & Coal Co.'s new No. 8 shaft, or Coverdale mine, about 11 mi. (17.7 km.) from Pittsburgh on a spur f the Montour R. R. The Pittsburgh seam, which is the one worked, is reached at a depth of 342 ft. (104 m.). Power is delivered to the mine at 22,000 volts over a transmission line of the bow-arrow type of construction. A private telephone line connecting the various mines and the main office in Pittsburgh is carried on the same poles. The high-tension line is brought to an outdoor, step-down, transformer substation, where three 833-kv.-a., single-phase, 60-cycle, oil-insulated, self-cooled transformers reduce the potential to 2300 volts. The transformers are protected by electrolytic, aluminum-cell lightning arresters, horn gaps, and choke coils. High and low-tension busses, together with fuses, choke coils and air-break horn-gap switches with their remote-control operating mechanism are mounted on a substantial structural-steel tower 25 ft. (7.6 m.) in height. MINE SUBSTATION The transformer substation is adjacent to a pressed-brick building that houses direct-current substation equipment together with switchboards, etc., for the control and distribution of power. This building also contains the hoist for the men and supplies.

THE object of this paper is to describe briefly the practical results obtained in several problems of civil engineering by resistivity measurements of the underground. It is intended for the mining engineer, as well as for the construction engineer; the stratigraphical problems discussed are general and frequently are encountered in mining exploration. Resistivity measurements have been used in mining and oil exploration for a number of years.1 Their introduction in the field of civil engineering, on the contrary, is rather recent. It was applied for the first time in the spring of 1928 near Littleton, N. H., in the survey of two dam sites for the New England Power Assn .2 Since then, the geophysical firm with which the author is connected has had an opportunity to develop this field of activity, and more than 20 investigations at dam and tunnel sites have been carried out in the United States and Canada. A part of this work has been verified by underground or drilling exploration. This paper deals with but a few of the results, which we are permitted to make public now. The theoretical and technical sides of the processes employed will not be discussed; they have already been described in various technical. .publications. A few general points will be mentioned, to make clear the practical examples given.
