THE accounting system or bookkeeping methods of any company are principally the concern of that company and of those who are in control of its affairs. Its published financial report is, however, primarily intended for those who are not already fully informed regarding its operations and finances. Whatever may be the advantages of standardization of accounting and bookkeeping methods, it must be admitted that a company has a certain right to handle its accounts and keep its books and records in whatever manner may seem to it best adapted to its affairs, even though such methods may differ materially from those generally adopted by others. In its financial reports it should not, however, either ask or expect that the statements it makes or the terms which it uses will be given in its case a meaning and interpretation different from that which they are ordinarily considered to have in similar reports and statements of other companies. The particular form and arrangement of such reports is a matter concerning which there may be much difference of opinion. It is of little importance whether current assets come first or last in the Balance Sheet, but it is important that there should not be included under this designation any items which are not properly current assets within the generally accepted meaning of that term. The extent to which stockholders or others interested are to be made acquainted with the full details of a company's business is a question which the proper authorities must in each case decide. It should, however, be recognized that there are certain facts regarding a mining com-pany which must be set forth in a financial statement if it is fully to cover the conditions and affairs of the company. For example, a financial, statement which does not include or is not accompanied by a statement, of the ore reserves of the company does not fully set forth its financial condition. This is true whether the absence of such a statement of ore reserves is because it is not desired to make public the figures or whether it is because the ore reserves themselves are not definitely known, or accurately measured.

IN an earlier paper1 we discussed a simple, rapid method of taking samples of liquid steel and analyzing them for oxygen, which, though possibly not absolutely accurate (as is likewise true of all other methods), certainly yields results that are satisfactorily consistent. Accordingly, samples from hundreds of heats in different shops were analyzed for oxygen, with results sufficient in number to be handled statistically and permit estimation of some general trends. Measurements were made in acid as well as in basic open hearths, throughout the refining period, to learn how stirring, blocking, adding ore or lime or sand, affects the oxygen content of the bath; we also followed the changes brought about by tapping, teeming, and deoxidizing. Some of these results, discussed in an earlier paper.2 bring out the dominant role of the carbon-oxygen reaction in regulating degree of oxidation both of metal and of slag, also the marked variability of concentration of dissolved oxygen [0] in excess of that which would be in equilibrium with carbon and with carbon monoxide at a partial pressure of one atmosphere. As a logical beginning on this complex problem, we take up in the present paper the variability of this excess oxygen, ?[O], when other factors are as constant as they ever are in open-hearth operation; namely, toward the end of the refining period, when the bath may be regarded as in the comparatively steady state it approaches in absence of disturbing factors. This condition was chosen because by that time the significant reactions, except carbon oxidation, between slag and metal have come to substantial equilibrium; this facilitates interpretation of the complex situation and thus permits more definite conclusions to be drawn. This excess concentration of oxygen, ?[0], in the metal is needed, of course, to make the steelmaking process go at a reasonable rate; alternatively it may be regarded as a measure of the virtual pressure increment above one atmosphere, or of the degree of supersaturation, of carbon monoxide in the metal. According to our measurements, the excess concentration ?[O] in liquid steel varies from about 0.009 to 0.035 per cent oxygen by weight. It is quite sensitive to change of conditions, being altered temporarily by operations such as stirring with green poles, additions of ore, lime, or sand; but as the disturbance works itself out, it resumes a level within the intermediate range characteristic of the steady state. 6.3-1. Historical Development. Rotary drilling has been used in surface mining for many years. Its principal use is for primary blasthole drilling. In this use, holes in the range from 4 to 15 in. in diameter are drilled in overburden and massive ore bodies for large initial blasting operation. With properly designed shot patterns and loading, secondary blasting is seldom required. The use of rotary drilling with diamond bits for exploration is discussed in Chapter 3.1. Small rotary drillholes of approximately 2-in. diameter are employed as blastholes to shatter uncovered coal seams, but this is a minor part of surface mining drilling operations. Another minor use of rotary drills in surface mining is for placing wire saw poles in dimension stone quarries, usually accomplished with large-diameter calyx or steel shot drills. Primary blasthole drilling by the rotary method was performed with drag bits until 1949 (19). Its use in mining was only in soft formations, so that rotary drills prior to that time were found principally in overburden drilling for the surface mining of coal. In 1949 it was found that air circulation to remove cuttings resulted in increased penetration rate and prolonged life for the rolling-cutter type of bits. Prior to that time, and since their introduction in oil well drilling in 1907, water had been used for circulation with these bits. The dependence on water to clean the hole had delayed the acceptance of bits with rolling cutters in mines because of water haulage and freezing problems as well as the loss of water through cracks in the formation. After rolling cutters were introduced, subsequent improvements in tools made rotary drilling adaptable to harder formations (18). This system is now used in the hardest formations encountered in mining. 6.3-2. Principles of Operation. ENERGY. The purpose of this paper is to present some data and comparisons regarding three types of Rheolaveur plants washing bituminous coal from the Pittsburgh seam. It deals only with the sections that handle coarse coal. The Rheolaveur system consists of launders or troughs in which coal and its associated impurities are conveyed by water. The impurities. being heavier than the coal, settle toward the bottoms of the launders and are drawn off through specially designed openings called Rheo boxes. Fundamentally, each plant consists of straight-sided, flat-bottomed launders of varying width and length, each launder equipped with one or more Rheo boxes for the removal of high-grauity fractions of the feed that are undesirable in the cleaned coal. Each launder has at least two longitudinal sections, the first with a slope of from 11/2 to 4 in. per foot of length, called the classification section. The single-box launder has a classification section followed by a washing section ahead of the box. A two-box launder is a single-box launder followed by a washing section and a second box. The slope of the washing section between the first and second boxes is determined to some extent by tonnage. At the end of the classification section, which may. vary from 8 to 15 ft. in length, the slope abruptly flattens out to a slope of from 92' to 1 in. per foot of length. This flatter section of the launder, called the washing section, may vary from a few feet, in a single-box launder, to 15 ft., in a two-box launder. Raw coal entering the head end of what we choose to call the "primary" launder or launders is pushed down the classification section by a stream of water entering the head end of the launder with the coal. As it strikes the washing section, of lower pitch, the velocity of flow is retarded and the heavier particles of slate, pyrite, bone, etc., take their places on the bottom and are drawn off as they pass over the Rheo boxes. The present state of knowledge of three-dimensional rock properties does not provide an adequate basis for evaluating the safety of under- ground structures in situ. Most of the triaxial studies reported in the past have dealt with crushing strength, but have failed to consider the intergranular behavior and triaxial strain state of rocks. Without this information, the structural competence of rocks cannot be accurately assessed. The absolute three-dimensional testing method (ATT) was conceived for the purpose of analyzing the three-dimensional states of stresses and strains in aggregate rocks under conditions commonly encountered in underground structures. In-situ stress-strain states are not simple, even in the simplest possible form of opening, excavated in a homogeneous and isotropic rock medium. In general, there are four basic stress-strain states which are present in underground openings, regardless of the complexity of their geological conditions. They are the yielded, brittle-fractured, stress-relieved, stress-concentrated states, as illustrated in the schematic diagram, Fig. 1. The ATT machine was designed to create and study all these states in the laboratory. A theory describing the aggregate behavior of rocks under these diversified states is essential to evaluate the safety of underground structures. The Griffith theory is limited to tensile failure of ductile materials and therefore does not apply to behavior of aggregate rocks under compression. The Griffith theory also fails to consider the grain boundary characteristics of aggregates, which is the determining factor of rock behavior. The selective action of oils for lustrous minerals was first disclosed by Haynes in 1860. In 1885, Miss Carrie Everson elaborated this idea and also disclosed the fact that acid increased the so-called selective action. Her patent called for oils, either animal, vegetal or mineral, also for an acid or salt. The process was tried out on a practical scale in Baker City and Leadville, in 1889, and failed: first, because, as has since been shown, of the unsuitability of the ore to flotation; and second, because the invention was too far in advance of the times. Then followed the Elmore brothers, first with their bulk oil processes and later with their vacuum method. The basic principles of oil flotation were undoubtedly covered by the above inventors, the work done since their time being merely a building up on ground work laid by them. Different kinds of oil, different quantities of oil, and all the varying degrees of agitation, were all exemplified and practiced by them in one phase or another, and the developments that have since been made are but elaborations of the fundamental principles laid down by Haynes, Everson, and the Elmore brothers. In 1902, the Potter-Delprat process was developed in Australia. In this process no oil was used, the mineral being raised by the generation of gas, brought about by the introduction of acid into the pulp. The mineral particles appeared on the surface of the separatory vessel, in the form of a scum or froth, buoyed up by minute gas bubbles attached to them. This no doubt first gave the suggestion of gaseous flotation. In 1902, also, Froment, an Italian, was granted a patent in which he combined violent agitation with oil and gaseous flotation, the gas being generated within the pulp, in much the same way as in the Potter-Delprat process. The Parkes process of lead refining is based on the fact that when zinc isemixed with molten lead bullion, it forms an alloy with the silver and gold. This alloy freezes at a higher temperature and is of a lower specific gravity than the lead. With proper regulation of the temperature, the alloy solidifies and floats on top of the lead bath, from which it is removed and the silver, gold, and zinc recovered. The alloy should contain the maximum amount of silver (Ag2Zn,). The usual practice is to make two additions of the zinc. The first addition gives an alloy, or zinc crust, the zinc of which is saturated and is treated for the recovery of its zinc and silver; the crust from the second addition contains an excess of zinc and is used for the first addition on the following kettle. The crust produced depends on a number of items: purity of bullion, temperature, care with which kettle work is performed, addition of zinc, pressure used in expelling lead from crust, etc. It is desirable to make the concentration of silver in the zinc crust as high as possible; otherwise an undue amount of byproducts is produced, which greatly increases the cost of refining. It was formerly considered good practice to make a concentration of 20 :1. That is to say, if the lead bullion assayed 150 oz. dorê per ton, the assay of the retort bullion recovered from the zinc crust should be 3000 oz. per ton. As a matter of fact, the concentration should never, except on bullion assaying over 300 oz., be so low, and with low-grade bullion it should be 50:1. In one lead refinery where, ordinarily, the work was good, on a bullion averaging about 200 oz. per ton, a concentration of 24:1 was common; but how it was obtained was known only to the foremen. Changes occurred, and under new foremen the kettle work fell off badly; the problem then was to bring about this greater concentration. As is customary, the refincry had a "schedule" for its 60-ton kettles, which gave the number of pounds of zinc required for all possible assays, on both the first and the second zincing. The purpose of this paper is to direct attention to the importance and the usefulness of phase measurements in electrical prospecting for ore, a subject about which virtually nothing has been published. The paper describes a new field method for ore prospecting, the "Turam" method, which makes use of phase measurements, and which has been used with great success for five years. Of the principal geophysical prospecting methods, the gravimetric and magnetic methods determine the direction and strength of the static fields of force of the earth. By seismic and electrical methods, fields of force are applied to the block of ground under investigation. By these methods a third parameter can be measured, besides the direction and strength of the field; namely, the time of arrival of the applied field at the different observation points. This time of arrival has been practically the only parameter measured in seismic work, while in electrical prospecting it has generally not been considered, the measurements having been limited to determination of direction and strength of the applied field. Phase Measurements In the most widely used of the electrical prospecting methods, those using alternating current, the time of arrival of the "electrical vibration" at the different observation points can be carried out as phase measurements. The phase angle measured then expresses, in part of one "vibration," or one cycle, how much the electrical vibrations at the observation point are out of step with those close to the source of the field. A phase lag of 45", for instance, means that the alternating field in the observation point is one-eighth of one complete " vibration," or cycle, out of step behind the field at the source. If the frequency is, say, 500 cycles per second, a frequency often used in electrical prospecting, a phase lag of 45' then means that the time required for the field of force to travel from the source to the observation point is 1/8 ' /500 = 1/4000 sec. Since the phase angle can be measured with an accuracy of a fraction, say one-tenth, of a degree, and the frequency can be considerably higher than 500, it is readily seen that the time of arrival can in this way be measured

Since the days of Newcomen and Watt, when men first sought to turn the energy of fuels to useful purposes, coal-generated steam has supplied most of the power needed for both stationary and mobile applications. The low efficiency and large water requirements of the nineteenth century steam-power plant caused many engineers to turn their thoughts toward more direct means of converting heat into power. As far back as 1791, John Barber secured an English patent on a combination' which he might well have called a "gas turbine." He proposed to generate producer gas from coal or charcoal, to burn it under pressure in air obtained from a reciprocating compressor, and to drive a turbine wheel with the resultant hot combustion products. With the optimism characteristic of the inventor, he hoped that the turbine would not only operate his compressor but also perform useful work. There is no record that Barber ever built his machine, but if he had done so he would have learned that useful power can result from such a combination only when both turbine and compressor are highly efficient and when the temperature of the gas entering the turbine is not far below 1000°F. Hot-air prime movers continued to attract attention, and both Stirling in England and Ericsson in America2 built reciprocating engines that operated with some success upon coal-heated air. The internal-combustion engine, burning liquid fuels, supplanted the hot-air type, and, for the first time, challenged the supremacy of both the steam cycle and its familiar fuel, coal. Liquid Fuels Compete with Coal As the increasing use of the automobile multiplied the demand for gasoline, the supply of residual fuel increased rapidly, and heavy oil declined in price to the point where it became competitive with coal. First in the marine field and later in stationary plants in areas adjacent to refineries, oil began to be widely used. Oil's greater convenience and higher heating value per pound of weight or per cubic foot of bunker space have caused it to take over much of the marine field. The introduction of the highly efficient diesel engine, capable of burning a fuel that is cheaper than gasoline, again threatened the position of coal, for the operating costs of the diesel became directly competitive with those of coal-burning equipment. In isolated power plants and smaller marine installations, the diesel provided the medium by which oil again successfully invaded fields formerly dominated by coal. The diesel engine, provided with an electrical transmission, found an excellent application in railroad service. Nine intermetallic compounds were tested in tension at various temperatures. Seven exhibited extensive plastic deformation at elevated temperatures. Correlations of tensile strength and elongation are attempted with melting (decomposition) temperature, valence electron configurations of the component elements, heat of formation, crystal structure, density, and volume decrease accompanying compound formation. A LTHOUGH intermetallic compounds have been -tX known for many years, the study of their mechanical properties, particularly in tension, is just beginning. The problem has been unattractive because of the well-known, erratic behavior of brittle materials tested in tension. The strong influence of surface or internal flaws as stress raisers in non-ductile materials and the effect of eccentricity of loading in superimposing bending stresses on the state of tension in the specimen are extremely difficult to mitigate and impossible to completely eliminate. Thus, tensile properties determined for brittle materials, such as intermetallic compounds at temperatures low in comparison to their melting points, are at best only general guides to the values to be expected in an ideal test of a perfect specimen of the material. It is, nevertheless, surprising that apparently no attempt was made to follow up the pioneer work of Tammann and Dahl1 in this field. Working with crude apparatus, these investigators succeeded in showing unequivocally that at temperatures sufficiently close to their melting points (from 75" to 400°C for the compounds tested) intermetallic compounds did exhibit plasticity. This was indicated by the appearance of slip lines on the surface of the specimen. No observations of strength were made in these tests, which were of a compressive or indentation type. Rossi2 in 1932 attempted to study the physical and mechanical properties of single crystals of a group of intermetallic compounds. However, he was able to prepare only one material, Cu2Z8,, in the form of large, defect-free, single crystals. Thus, he was able to report only the relative fragility of the compounds at room temperature. He reported one compound, Ag,Zn,, to be somewhat plastic at room temperature and Cu,Si to be friable, the latter in agreement with results reported herein. Although test results are available only in classified literature, it has also been announced that MoSi, possesses some ductility at elevated temperatures." In 1948 and 1949 Savitskii and Savitskii and Baron -ublished their work on the hot extrusion of Mg-Zn, Al-Mg, and Cu-Zn compounds. Under the favorable state of stress existing for this process MgZn, MgZn,, MgZn,, ß (Al-Mg), ? (Al-Mg) and 0 (Cu-Zn) could be reduced by amounts up to 90 pct at elevated temperatures. These authors also report that hardnesses of Mg-Zn compounds decrease from room temperature values of about 300 kg per sq mm to 30 to 50 kg per sq mm at 325°C. They found that alloys consisting solely of one Mg-Zn compound were most resistant to softening on heating, mixtures of a compound and eutectic less resistant, and mixtures of two compounds least resistant. Mexico has been famous for its silver-mines ever since the Spanish conquest; but in respect to gems, although many varieties occur, yet only a few have been obtained in any important amount. Considering the extent of country in Mexico and ill the adjoining States of the Central American Republics, and the richness of mineral wealth that must surely exist there, our present knowledge of the occurrence of precious stones is remarkably small. The great prevalence of igneous rocks would lead us to anticipate the future discovery of many localities of gems and ornamental stones, when fuller scientific exploration shall have taken place.* At the present time the only gem-stone that is systematically mined in Mexico is opal, and the only important ornamental stone is tecali, the so-called Mexican onyx. The least work analysis of constrained deformation, first proposed by Taylor and recently modified by Chin, Hosford, and Mendorf to include twinning, has been applied to the problem of axisynmetric flow. Calculations were made, for the case of (111}(110) slip and {111}(112) twinning applicable to fcc deformation. The solutions were obtained by linear programming techniques and with the aid of computer methods. The results show that in axisymnzetric tension the onset of twinning tends to decrease the plastic strength anisotropy as compared with the case of defortnation by slip alone. In compression, however, the strength anisotropy is increased as a result of twinning. The [100] and 11111 orientations and their vicinity are unfavorable for twinning in tension and compression, respecticely. With slight modifications, the present results may be applied to bcc metals deform ing by {110}(111j slip and (112} (111) twinning. Implications of present results to wire texture development of low stacking fault energy fcc materials arc discussed. PREVIOUSLY we' have applied linear programming techniques to obtain solutions to Taylor's least work analysis2 of constrained deformation of single crystals undergoing axisymmetric flow, such as occurs in an axially loaded polycrystalline aggregate. These solutions yielded values of the parameter M = o/.r = Y/w which relates the external stress-strain (u-c) curve to the shear stress-shear strain (7-y) curve for the crystal. The value of M is dependent on crystal orientation and hence enters significantly in texture strengthening considerations.3'4 Recently the Taylor hypothesis was modified by Chin, Hosford, and Mendorf' to include mechanical twinning. The latter has now been applied to the problem of axisymmetric flow and the results are reported in this paper. Calculations have been made for {111 )( 110) slip and {111 )(112) twinning applicable to fcc crystals. With minor changes in the indices of the slip and twin systems, the present results are also applicable to bcc crystals which slip on (110) (111) and twin on {112)(111) systems.

THERE are two general approaches to the problem of increasing profits from an operation. One is to lower expense; the other is to raise income. Mechanical preparation of coal may be used for either purpose but a prudent consideration of many details must precede any decision lest the results be negative instead of positive. It is quite possible that any net gain will result from a combination of the two. Since mechanically prepared coal invariably is a better product qualitatively than a hand-picked coal from the same mine, it is a reasonable expectation that the customer will be willing to increase the producer's income by paying a higher price. Or there may be the possibility that a combination of mechanical mining plus mechanical cleaning will give a lower over-all production cost for the coal in the railroad car. More likely, there will be found a combination of these two factors. From the customer's point of view, the competitive delivered cost per B.t.u. considered in relation to such incidental factors as dust nuisance, handling properties, ash disposal, and ash fusibility determines what he will pay. In-a bulk tonnage such as coal, freight is a very considerable part of the delivered fuel cost, and obviously freight paid on incombustible ash has no economic attractions. INCENTIVE FOR CLEANING Coal is prepared in four major ways: l (1) by screening or sizing, (2) by mixing or blending, (3) by cleaning, including hand picking and mechanical cleaning, (4) by dustless treatment. By a combination of any or all of these methods, coal can be prepared to standard specifications. It is easily possible to have good cleaning and still get a poor final product because of faulty screening or mixing, while it is possible to produce a very acceptable product from mediocre cleaning if the coal is well screened and mixed.

The piping and segregation of ingots of steel is a comprehensive subject, and must be studied in reference to the different grades of soft, medium, and hard steel, rather than to discuss it in a general manner, as though applicable to all grades. Rail steel, however, will receive the most consideration in this paper, for the wheel-loads of the motive power and rolling stock have doubled from 1890 to 1910. Steel rails and tires which were efficient under the light loads, became less serviceable under the double wheel-loads, quadrupled tonnage, and higher speeds. Bessemer Steel. Bessemer steel of from 0.10 to 0.15 per cent. of carbon, for splice-bars, spikes, and tie-plates, rises in setting, and is cast in bottle-mouthed molds, which must be capped to prevent an overflow from the top. This grade of steel rises in the molds and makes a longer ingot than the volume of molten steel when first teemed. The ingots which are allowed to cool and then cut open, show, particularly in the upper part, large occluded blow-holes, and when they are not oxidized or do not contain foreign matter, weld more or less completely when the steel is rolled or forged above 1,100° C., and it is in this way that the blow-holes are closed in the low-carbon steels. Boiler-Plate and Fire-Box Steel. These grades often contain more or less minute laminations, which are the remains of small blow-holes forming after the setting metal has reached a pasty condition. The blow-holes in the low-carbon steels have not been prevented by usiug deox-idizers, though the ingots are slightly improved so far as the soundness of the steel is concerned. PROBABLY nowhere in the United States or its possessions is mining development more active at present than in the Philippine Islands. Only a few years ago only one company was of any importance, the Benguet Consolidated. Now, five companies are paying dividends, five others have reached the producing stage, some seven others may produce this year, and a score or so are being actively developed. Gold production in 1933 was valued at about $8,000,000, last year at about $11,000,000, and this year an output valued at about $17,000,000 is envisaged. At the beginning of 1934 about 1750 tons of ore was being milled daily; at the end of the year, the tonnage was approximately 3400. In 1933 there were only thirteen Institute members in the Philippines; a year ago there were 27, and now there are 46. About fifteen thousand amen were employed in the mining industry last year, with mine payrolls amounting to $3,500,000. An immense amount of new machinery has been required. One difficulty has so far hindered gold-mine development to some extent-lack of adequate power. Each company therefore finds it necessary to generate its own power, and for this purpose diesel engines are generally adopted.

This paper shows how stability theory can be used to optimize solvent recovery of oil. Application of the theory leads to definition of the limiting conditions required for stable displacement to occur. One of these conditions is that the size of a solvent "slug" must at least equal a prescribed minimum. The criteria to be satisfied are miscibil-ity and stability. Stability implies that no viscous fingering will occur and that mixing will be caused only by a dispersion process. Miscibility implies that complete recovery will be obtained from the swept regions. Thus, for any specified set of reservoir conditions, an optimum use of solvent is defined. INTRODUCTION The early outlook for solvent flooding as a means to increase oil recovery was very favorable. Some laboratory results indicated that a "slug" containing perhaps 2 to 3 per cent of a hydrocarbon pore volume could be successful. However, other data suggested as much as 30 per cent would be required. The difference is of considerable economic importance. A theoretical explanation for these divergent results has been advanced by the author.1,2 Stability theory defines conditions for two distinct flow regimes. In stable displacement, solvent and oil become mixed by a dispersion process, and the solvent requirement is small. On the other hand, unstable displacement can degenerate into viscous fingering. The practical result is a considerable increase in the extent of mixing and, thus, in the solvent required. The present paper shows how to use stability theory to optimize solvent recovery of oil. Oil is usually considered to be displaced by a small amount, or a slug, of solvent. Gas in turn follows solvent. Any fingering will permit contact of nearly solvent-free gas and oil, leading to immiscibility and reduced recovery. Thus, our optimum is defined by two restrictions — stable flow and miscibility. Although an immiscible solvent process could prove more profitable than any miscible process, such processes lie outside the selected definition of an optimum. The usefulness of computations based on the present work will depend on the validity of the general theory. Because the important idealizations required tend to minimize the predicted solvent requirement, the results should state correctly the limiting conditions required. Therefore, theoretical calculations should have practical value. This paper first reviews several principles that result from stability theory. The following section describes use of these ideas in relatively simple systems which symmetry makes appear one-dimensional. Of particular importance is the step-by-step design of 3 stable minimum-solvent slug. The use of stability theory in cases of multi-dimensional displacement is discussed and, finally, suggestions are given for simplified practical application of the theoretical results. PRINCIPLES OF STABILITY THEORY The use of perturbation methods to derive stability conditions has been shown by the author.l The discussion is presented in terms of the fractional concentration of solvent in the single hydrocarbon phase. The engineer has often to penetrate difficult or unknown regions. Mineral, irrigation, boundary and railway problems frequently necessitate journeys through, or long residence in, localities whence sustenance cannot be drawn. The selection and conveyance of provisions, outfit and implements thus become a matter of the first importance. Scientific skill, even of the highest order, is powerless unless supported by the proper appliances and foods. The advance of civilization favors the engineer, in that it is constantly enlarging his facilities and thus reducing his difficulties. Notwithstanding this fact, many are yet brought face to face with the problems considered in this paper. Distinction must be made between parties which are to be in constant or even occasional touch with a base of supplies, and those which will be for a long time dependent on their original outfit. Again, the requirements of a party on the march are different from those of a fixed camp. The district, season, cliinate, size and personnel of party also influence the character of the outfit. A party that is to be detached from its base of supplies for some time requires a greater variety of food than if it is to be gone for a short time. Much less in proportion need be taken where the journey is not long, so that privation is confined to a limited period. The ability to establish a fixed camp permits a larger outfit than would be possible if the camp mere to be moved from day to day. Transportation, climatic and other conditions are thus so varied that lists prepared for one work could hardly be applied to any other without some modification. Lists that have proved successful in some instances may, however, serve as bases to be added to, or otherwise altered, for the case in hand. The mistake usually made is in providing too large an outfit. Every emergency cannot be provided for; so that it is well to take, not what may be needed, but what cannot be spared.

The concentration and activity of oxygen in liquid copper has been measured by the reversible galvanic cell: at 1100°and 1200°C for the concentration range of oxygen of 3 to 5600 ppm Measurements for approximately thirly alloys at each temperature indicate that the activity of oxygen roughly follows Henry's law, the activity coefficients of oxygen being 0.12 and 0.205 at 1100° and 1200°C, respectively. These results compare javorably with the results of seven other electrochemical and gaseous equilibrium studies on this system, the free energy of the solution reaction 1/2 O2 = O (7 at. pct in Cu, liq) being -18.10 * 0.30 kcal per gfw at 1200°C. Estimates of the standard molar free energy of formation of CupO(S) are also made. Praclicul consideration of this cell as an oxygen sensor for liquid metals is discussed briefly. SOLID mixed-oxide electrolytes which have a defect structure in the anion sublattice have recently become a very popular means by which the chemical potential of oxygen is measured at high temperatures. Since the pioneering work of Kiukkola and Wagner1 such electrolytes have been used in numerous cell studies for determining the thermodynamic properties of metallic oxides and oxy compounds, the partial pressure of oxygen in vacuum systems and other atmospheres, and the properties of oxygen dissolved in metals and alloys. The use of a solid electrolyte in a cell for a fast reliable method of oxygen determination in liquid metals would be a very important tool to the process metallurgist. In copper, for example, the oxygen content of the molten metal in the cathode furnace is a prime factor in determining the "set" or solidification profile of cast wire bars. For the past several years, USBM has conducted laboratory and continuous process development work on the weathered mica pegmatites ores of Alabama, Georgia, and North Carolina to determine the feasibility of recovering commercial-grade mica concentrates by flotation. The research has resulted in the development of two processes for flotation of mica: 1) an acid-cationic method for recovery of coarse mica and 2) an alkaline-anionic-cationic method for recovery of fine mica. The research indicated that the two processes may be effectively utilized separately or in combination for flotation of mica from weathered pegmatite ores. This report summarizes the process development work, and demonstrates the feasibility of producing commercial-grade concentrates with a high recovery of the contained mica. Mica mining in the United States is confined largely to pegmatites and schists in a few well-defined areas. The largest region extends from central Virginia southward through western North and South Carolina, northern Georgia, and east-central Alabama.'" Whereas in western North Carolina, these pegmatite dikes are weathered to only a shallow depth, they are deeply weathered in the Carolina Piedmont and in Georgia and Alabama. Particularly in Georgia and Alabama, mica is found in the decomposed slates and schists adjacent to the pegmatites, and in deeply weathered granites. Most flake mica is obtained as the major marketable product by crushing and milling pegmatites4 To a lesser extent, mica is produced as a byproduct of feldspar" and spodumene. Past research by U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) has developed two methods for mica flotation. One method utilizes acid-cationic flotation for recovery of mica.' This method requires thorough desliming of the ore with consequent fine mica losses. The other utilizes an alkaline-anionic-cationic process for recovering fine-size mica from pegmatite ores after desliming sufficiently to remove clay materials but not so drastically as to remove the fine mica.8-18 The latter process has also been successfully applied to a micaceous schist ore from California.' This report summarizes the results of these research studies. Both of the flotation processes developed by USBM have been adopted by the mica industry and are being commercially utilized separately and in combination for flotation of mica from weathered pegmatite ores.
