This paper proposes a comparatively short-term (8 to 10 hours) well test for detecting and characterizing well-bore damage and for measuring mean formation permeability. The proposed test is made by injecting fluid at constant pressure, recording injection rate as a function of injection time. After one to four hours of injection, the well is shut in and fall-off of bottom-hole pressure is obtained as a function of shut-in time. Formation permeability is estimated by an iterative technique. First, a value of formation permeability is assumed. Then, a plot of the recorded injection rate as a function of dimensionless time is made, using the assumed pertneability value. From the slope of the injection-rate curve. a new value of formation permeability is calculated. If the new value agrees with the original assumed value, the assumption was the correct formation permeability. If the values do not agree, the process is repeated using the new permeability value in the calculation. Convergence is rapid, and a reliable permeability value results. Pressure fall-off data are used to check the result. Graphs of pressure and injection rate us functions of time given in the paper show that changes in permeability of the formation in the neighborhood of the wellbore are disclosed by this technique. Thus, the short-term test can he used to detect formation damage. Also, a rough measure of the radial extent of damage can be inferred, which is helpful in designing stimulation treatments. The mathematical model used for this work was a single-zone, horizontal reservoir with a damaged zone in which permeability decreased continuously as radial distance to the wellbore decreased. This model is more realistic than the usual two-zone, discontinuous permeability model used in published works; calculations indicate the realistic model is valid. Vertical variations in horizontal permeability were studied with this model, and results indicate that the permeability measured by the short-term test is the mean horizontal permeability for the vertical interval tested. The proposed short-term test thus should be useful in detecting and characterizing formation damage and in measuring formation permeability needed in calculating reservoir transmissibility. INTRODUCTION To plan the most efficient production or injection schedule for a well and to design or evaluate the optimal stimu- lation treatment, it is necessary to know the properties of the reservoir adjacent to the well, particularly the reservoir transmissibility and characteristics of a damaged zone, if one exists. Several techniques for determining reservoir transmissi-bility from well tests have been presented in the literature. 1,2,3,4 All these techniques rely on conducting constant-rate well tests that often are difficult to execute. A constant-pressure well test is generally easier to carry Out. and this paper contains the first available method for the analysis of constant-pressure well tests. Determination of wellbore damage from transient well tests has been the subject of several papers."" From these studies it is apparent that information necessary for determination of the characteristics of a damaged zone is available shortly after the transient well test is initiated. Consequently, it may not be necessary to carry out an extensive well test (for example, a pressure build-up test) if the primary purpose of the test is to detect the existence of wellbore damage. All previous studies of well testing to determine wellbore damage have been based on the two-zone perrneability model. In this model the damaged zone has a permeability k,, extending to a radius r,,, and the formation permeability k obtains from r, to the drainage radius r,.. Consequently, there is a discontinuity in permeability at r = r,,. This discontinuity can be eliminated by assuming a continuous variation in permeability through the damaged zone. The effect of this assumption on transient well tests is discussed in following sections of this paper. In addition, all formations have within them vertical permeability variations associated with lithology changes throughout the zone of interest. This paper also considers the effect of these variations on transient well tests. ANALYSIS OF CONSTANT-PRESSURE WELL TESTS The mathematical analysis associated with the injection of fluid at constant wellbore pressure into a single-zone, horizontal reservoir completely filled with a fluid of small and constant compressibility and constant viscosity is given in Appendix A. In this analysis it is assumed that the well is located at the center of an undamaged, circular drainage area. It is proposed to present some of the results of observation of the geologists of the Appalachian division during the past seven years, and of experimental study during the past three years, on the subject of structural geology in the Appalachian Province. The article must be brief, even at the risk of obscurity; but a more complete and fully illustrated paper will appear in the Thirteenth Annual Report of the United States Geological Survey. Certain Facts. The following facts are first to be taken account of: From the Cambrian age to the Carboniferous there existed a conti nent stretching southeast from the present range of the Blue Ridge, covering what is now eastern Pennsylvania, New Jersey, eastern Vir ginia, North and South Carolina and eastern Georgia, with some un known part of the present Atlantic ocean-bed. Northwest from this continent lay a sea, reaching to the west and north of the Mississippi. Sedimentary deposits derived from the land accumulated with or ganic remains, in the sea; the greater part fell in a narrow zone along the shore, the remainder spread in a comparatively thin sheet over the bottom of the Mediterranean of North America. The resulting strata measure, near Mauch Chunk, Pa., 30,000 feet; over much of Pennsylvania, 20,000 to 25,000 feet; over eastern Tennessee, Georgia and Alabama, but 10,000 to 15,000 feet. The stratified mass, considered with reference to its broad physical char acters, consists of three members: A base of shale and sandstone ; a middle of limestone, 2500 to 6000 feet thick—a stratum probably not equalled in the world for uniformity of character and massive ness; and a top of shale and sandstone, 5000 to 23,000 feet thick. This mass has been folded. In a zone 900 miles long and 50 to 125 miles wide, the strata exhibit such attitudes and relations as could result only from a force of compression acting from north west or from southeast, or from both directions. It has also appeared that the behavior of the zinc cell is the best and surest check on the correctness and thoroughness of the purification methods used, because it indicates the presence of both current impurities and cumulative impurities derived from the leaching of the ore; it also indicates whether these impurities are current or cumulative, at least in so far as they are of serious importance commercially.

Blast furnace feed specifications are being revolutionized because of the large increase in iron pellet production from low-grade ores of the Lake Superior region. Recent laboratory findings aimed at a better understanding of factors influencing the physical quality of pellets produced from taconite concentrates are reviewed. Tests for determining better product quality, the effects of additives, and production factors are discussed. The current revolution in specifications for blast furnace feed is typified to a great extent by the recent tremendous growth in iron ore pellet production from low grade ores of the Lake Superior region. Indeed, pellets are responsible, at least in part, for many of the stringent new requirements that are being placed on the suppliers of furnace raw materials. As the tonnage of pellets going to the steel mills increases, more and more attention is being turned to the detailed characteristics that make this product an ideal blast furnace feed. Control of quality in pellets is similar to that of any other product. A basic understanding of the factors that are encountered in their production, from the crude ore through to the finished product, is required, along with careful process supervision and frequent quality checks. Normally, chemical grade is not a problem. This usually can be controlled within the desired specifications by minor operating variations in the con- centrator. While future changes in requirements may result in the need for self-fluxing pellets1 or other chemical changes, today's quality demands center primarily around the physical characteristics of the pellets. It is in this area that many of the recent laboratory studies have proven helpful to the operating plants. A better understanding of the physical factors involved in pelletizing has provided the basis for a continuing program of quality improvement. Tigerschiold and Ilmoni2 and Cooke with various associates are responsible for the development of much of the basic understanding of the pelletiz-ing process. These earlier findings have served as a most useful background for this work. LABORATORY PROCEDURES Magnetite concentrates produced from eastern Mesabi Range magnetic taconites were used for all of the work reported herein. The sizing and chemical analysis of a random sample are shown in Table t Additives usually are mixed with the concentrates in taconite plants before pelletizing to improve the strength characteristics of the unfired balls. Ben-tonite, soda ash, and coal are in common use. The bentonite used in these studies was of the Wyoming sodium type; the soda ash was a standard commercia1 brand. Anthrafines were used where coal was called for. The procedure for making batches of balls at the Hibbing Laboratory is as follows: In an especially designed mulling equipment 2800 g of dry ore are mixed for 10 min with the desired additives. Water is added and mixing continued for 1 1/2 min. The charge is removed from the muller and put through a mechanical shredder to break down any lumps that may have formed. sixty previously formed seed balls are placed in the balling drum, which is in fact a 6 x 16-in. diam airplane tire turning at 53 Wm. Two thousand grams of the shredded concentrate and additive mix are fed by hand into the tire at a con-

Secondary recovery projects often are not started in oil reservoirs until dictated by rising GOR's or declining oil production. Such circumstances require a well dispersed injection pattern to prevent the oil bank from bypassing the production wells. Many times this purpose is served by using the five-spot or line-drive patterns, in which half of the wells are made injection wells. A regular injection pattern is proposed that is based on the same well spacing as the five-spot but in which only a third of the wells need be converted to injection wells. Fluid flow model studies on this proposed pattern show that production histories will be as good as those for a five-spot pattern at mobility ratios of three and above. The model data are presented in a form that may be used to predict recoveries from both homogeneous and stratified formations. Introduction The injection of fluid into a petroleum reservoir usually is prompted by an actual, or predicted, loss in the productivity of the reservoir. Often, an oil reservoir is produced by pressure depletion until high GOR's dictate a change in policy. Fluid injection also causes increased ultimate recovery, but this usually is of less importance to the operator than is the maintenance of the production rate. It is a fact that the ultimate recovery in any particular fluid injection project is relatively independent of the number and spacing of the injection wells as long as the reservoir voidage through the production wells is balanced by the total injection rate. However, the response of a production well is directly affected by the distance it lies from an injection well. In places where the well productivities are declining, the injection wells should be spaced as evenly as possible among the producing wells ("dispersed" injection pattern). More particularly, if the production response depends upon the formation (and subsequent production) of an oil bank, each production well should be surrounded by injection wells. Otherwise, the oil productivity will increase very little as the oil bank moves past the well.'.' An evenly spaced injection pattern has the best chance of generating an oil kick in the production wells. If reservoir voidage and injection rates are to be equal, the ratio of injection wells to production wells must be equal to the ratio of the average injectivity to the average productivity (in reservoir volumes). This ratio is in strumental in choosing the injection pattern. Table 1 shows the production well to injection well ratio for the dispersed injection patterns that have been described in the literature.'-' All of these patterns will have comparable recoveries and response times (for the same basic distance between wells). The choice of pattern there fore depends upon the relative injectivity and productivity of the wells and upon the type of drilling pattern employed. Another important factor may be the ability of the proposed production wells to make up the lost productivity from those wells converted to injectors. These factors become more pronounced at the higher oil viscosities (low gravity oils). All other things being equal, the probable ratio of single well injectivity to single well productivity will be equal to the water-oil mobility ratio of the proposed flood. Thus, high mobility ratios (due to low gravity oil) should call for fewer injection wells — as long as these injection wells are "dispersed" to obtain more even pro duction response for the remaining wells. Secondary re covery projects in oil reservoirs seldom, if ever, will have mobility ratios requiring more injection wells than production wells. Thus, only the last five of the patterns listed in Table 1 will be of significant interest in oil recovery. The author recently proposed a technique for handling the effect of planes of weakness on failure in geologic material.1 The technique employed an "extended" Mohr's rupture envelope, on which was superimposed a generalized three dimensional stress representation. Subsequently, the method was applied to so-called two-dimensional stress states" which were in reality degenerate three-dimensional ones. Since a two-dimensional stress solution usually refers to a plane stress condition, the terminology was confusing. The distinction between a plane stress state and a degenerate three-dimensional one is shown in Fig. 1. The solution of problems involving a generalized three-dimensional stress state is greatly aided by continual reference to the basic principle that no stress components can act on a plane, oriented as is the weakness plane, which lies outside of the weakness plane's rupture enVelope.2 This is shown in Fig. 2; and if it is also remembered that the radii of the Mohr's Circles give the orientation of such a plane, solutions are easier to follow, and perform. Sample Problem 1: Site Location (generalized three-dimensional case).' Given: 1) Both rupture envelope for the solid and plane of weakness. 2) Existing principal stresses and orientations in space (?12, ?13) obtained from a stress analysis of the proposed structure. A rotational viscometer has been designed which perrnits the measurement of the rheological properties of drilling muds and other non-Newtonian fluids under conditions equivalent to those in a deep borehole (350F, 10,000 psi). The important mechanical features of this instrument are described, and its design criteria are discussed. The flow equations for the novel configuration of the viscometer are derived and the calibration procedures are described. The data and their interpretation, resulting from measurement of the flow properties and static gel strengths of homoionic montmorillonite suspensiom at high temperatures and pressures, are presented. Data are also presented for the flow behavier of typical drilling fluids at high temperatures and pressures. The pressure losses in the drill pipe and the annulus depend critically upon the flow parameters of the drilling fluid. This work demonstrates the need to measure these parameters under bottom-hole conditions in order to obtain a reliable estimate of the pressure losses in the mud system. INTRODUCTION The rheological properties of drilling fluids are affected by temperature and pressure, but the extent of these effects on the dynamic flow properties is not well known. Measurements of changes of the flow properties of clay-water drilling muds with temperature have been reported by Srini-Vasan and Gatlin.1 The temperatures reported did not exceed 200F, a limitation imposed by the apparatus used by these authors. The rheological properties of clay suspensions were measured at temperatures up to 100C by Gurdzhinian.' Neither the nature of the exchange ions in the clay suspensions nor the degree of purity were defined in his work, nor were the measurements extended to currently used drilling fluids. The lack of systematic measurements of dynamic flow properties at high temperatures and pressures seems the more surprising since during the last decade the importance of the control of the hydraulic properties of drilling fluids has come to be widely recognized. Very good mathematical treatments of the friction losses in drill pipe and annulus have been developed.3 4 These treatments are based on the assumption that drilling fluids behave as Bingham plastic fluids. Quite often this assumption is justified, while in other cases a power law equation pro- duces better fit than the Bingham model does. For convenience in applying viscometer data to pressure-drop calculations, the Bingham plastic flow equation is preferable and, therefore, has been applied to the data reported in this paper, although other equations may fit these data more accurately. In a Bingham plastic fluid the relationship between the shearing stress 7 and the rate of shear D is given by the following equation: where is the plastic viscosity and 4 the yield point. If 4 = 0, the equation for simple Newtonian flow, 7 = pD, is obtained. Two empirical constants are required for the description of laminar flow of a Bingham plastic fluid, and calculations of the flow behavior at high temperatures and pressures cannot be better than is permitted by the accuracy with which these constants are known. For this reason a high-pressure, high-temperature rhe-ometer has been designed to measure the plastic viscosity the yield point +, and the static gel strength S, at pressures up to 10,000 psi and temperatures up to 350F. The important features of its design will be described. The results of measurements on homoionic clay slurries will be discussed insofar as they are relevant to an understanding of the general flow behavior of clay-water drilling fluids. The results of measurements on some typical drilling fluids will be presented also, and their practical implications will be briefly discussed. DESCRIPTION OF EQUIPMENT MECHANICAL FEATURES A viscometer designed to measure the plastic viscosity, yield point and gel strength of non-Newtonian fluids must permit the measurement of the shearing stress t at any given rate of shear D. This is possible only if t and D are approximately uniform throughout the entire sheared sample. A Couette apparatus is the most convenient method of realizing this condition, as has been pointed out by Grodde." The "high-pressure, high-temperature rheometer" described in this paper is basically a rotational Couette viscometer that is immersed in a cell in which pressure and temperature can be controlled over the range of interest. Fig. 1 shows schematically the important features of the pressure cell and associated equipment. The heart of the instrument is the rotating cup. It is shown more clearly in Fie. 2. which revresents the lower one-third of the pressure cell (below the input drive shaft shown in Fig. 1), and it is shown in detail in Fig. 3. Considerable work has resulted in the development of a formula by which the strength of coal pillars for an L to T ratio of up to 12 may be estimated. One of the factors involved in this formula is the coefficient of friction between the coal pillar and the adjacent rock with which it is in contact. This paper presents the results of studies on sandstone, limestone, shale and coal and the coefficient of friction between coal and the other three under wet and dry conditions. With the coefficients of friction thus determined and the use of results obtained earlier by Meikle and Holland, it seems probable that coal pillar strength may be more closely estimated. Several investigators1-3 have found that the com-pressive strength of cubical coal specimens can be correlated by an equation such as

The two mining districts of Pachuca and Real del Monte, well known for their antiquity and the extraordinary richness of their veins, are situated, 3 miles apart, only 62 miles north of the City of Mexico—the first being on the western, and the second on the eastern slope of the Pachuca range of mountains which bounds the great valley of Mexico. Close to the celebrated mining region of Pachuca is located the city of the same name, capital of the State of Hidalgo, at 2460 meters above sea-level and 20° 07' 35" North latitude, with 35,000 inhabitants, the majority of whom work in the mines; the remainder being Government employees, merchants, and a small number engaged in less important industries. The city extends along both sides of the canada which carries the waters of the river called "Avenidas de Pachuca," the banks of which are united by four bridges at regular intervals. The attention of the traveler approaching the city is first attracted by the appearance of the mountains, barren of vegetation, bounding the city with rocky cliffs and steep declivities, the grades of which serve as foundations to the irregular and varied groups of houses. Above these are the dumps, and, close by them, the mouths of the shafts, covered with conical tile roofs. The smoke of the chimneys, the noise of the mills and the appearance of some of the constructions reveal at first glance the industrial character of the place. At the left of the entrance to the canada, the mountain of San Cristobal, celebrated for the famous vein of Xacal, one of the richest and earliest exploited in the district, rises 450 meters above the city.

A method for determining average reservoir pressure is presented, which is simpler to apply than that devised by Matthews. Brons and Hazebroek. For bounded reservoirs, identical results are obtained if stabilized-flow conditions prevail. The present method yields inferior results in the transient state. The method can, with a slight modification, also be used for water-drive reservoirs. INTRODUCTION In the method proposed by Matthews, Brons and Haze-broek' for determining average reservoir pressure in a multi-well reservoir, the cumulative production (the production time of each well) enters twice: once when the buildup is plotted against In (t + t)/At to arrive at p*, and a second time when the correction, p*-p is determined with one of the several formulas for differently shaped drainage areas. Once a steady state has been attained, however, the previous production history should be immaterial. The same pressure distribution could have been arrived at after different cumulative productions of the individual wells. In principle, therefore, it should be possible to determine average pressures without referring to cumulative productions. In the following paragraphs an expression is presented for the difference between the pressure in a producing well and the average pressure of its drainage area. Then the build-up time needed to overcome this difference is indicated. UP to the present, there has been no large coal-producing industry in any of the South American countries. Since colonial times, the great mineral and agricultural wealth of that continent has led the people to activities other than the development of manufacturing industries based on coal; and climatic conditions are such that there has been very little demand for solid domestic fuel. However, there are extensive and widely distributed reserves of coal in South America that would make the development of a modern coal industry feasible. That factor is of the utmost significance now, when it is believed that the South American countries are entering the pioneer phase of a broad industrial development. Coal Fields Great areas of coal-bearing formations of Cretaceous and Tertiary ages occur generally throughout the Andean uplift and extend into the coastal range of the Caribbean region far east of Caracas. Thus the west coast countries have adequate reserves of coal, which include a wide range of types and classes. In the eastern part of South America, east of the Cordillera, as in North America, the coal measures are of Carboniferous and Permocarboniferous ages. The principal known deposits in this area are in the southern States of Brazil. Permocarboniferous coals ranging in rank from lignitic to anthracitic are found in the States of Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina, Parana and Sao Paulo. In the great.interior plateau of Brazil, south of the Amazon River, are extensive areas of Carboniferous strata that may contain coal deposits. There are widely scattered reports of findings of coal in' wells and stream beds in northern Piaui and Goias. In the Rio Fresco Valley, explorers have observed outcrops of two beds of anthracite and have brought to Rio de Janeiro samples from these beds. The Fresco is a tributary of the Xingu River that enters the Amazon from the south, but coal could not be shipped by water since the Rio Fresco area is in the upper part of the Xingu Valley, and there is a formidable series of rapids between that area and the lower level of the Amazon River basin. It is doubtful if coal deposits in this general area will be of economic importance for many years to come. Fig. 1 shows the general location of known coal fields of South America that have been explored sufficiently to indicate the presence of workable reserves. The coal deposits of the Andean region are similar in occurrence and general characteristics, as well as in age, to the coals of the Rocky Mountain region of North America. DAVE BARTLEY and Edwin F. Gray, miners, late of Shasta County, California, young, healthy, and "dead broke," arrived at Ely, Nevada, one evening in the summer of 1900. Before rustling jobs and going to work, they decided to look around the camp, and in pursuance of this plan they visited a number of claims owned by D. C. McDonald, Justice of the Peace and pioneer of the district. Among the claims he showed them were the Ruth (named after his daughter) and the Kearsarge. Both were regarded as possible gold or silver properties. For no very definite reason the two miners changed their plan and took a lease and option to buy the two claims for $3500. After the transaction was closed and the partners were alone, Gray asked Bartley what he thought of the ground. "If she's good for anything, it's copper" was the reply; and, so far as the records disclose, that was the first time that anyone ever thought of Ely or the Robinson mining district, as it was called, as a possible copper area. There were some slight surface indications of copper, but it is probable that the fact that Bartley had just come from a copper district had something to do with his predilection for a metal that was much despised around Ely. In any event, his hunch was good, and he spoke with the wisdom of an oracle. For thirty years prospectors had sought gold and silver around the camp. Several stamp mills and cyanide plants had been put up and a hundred shafts had been sunk, but fate had been indifferent in its rewards to the optimistic owners. Copper ore would have to be hauled by wagon, 150 miles down Steptoe Valley to the Southern Pacific Railroad, and there was scant hope of finding ore that would bear this cost. W. B. Underground fires have been common in the mines of the United Verde Copper Co. for the past 22 years. The first fire started in the 300 Hampton stope in the fall of 1894, following a cave in that orebody. The soft and highly pyritic nature of the ores is responsible for most of these fires. Since ore characteristics, methods of mining and ventilation, have an important influence on mine fires, they will be described in this paper. Orebodies The ores are mostly chalcopyrite except on the upper levels where considerable chalcocite, black oxides and other secondary minerals occur. The orebodies are in the form of lenses and vary in size. Some are small, while others are several hundred feet in length by a hundred or more feet in width. These orebodies extend, in some cases, from the surface to the lowest levels of the mine and usually at a steep angle of inclination. There are three different classes of ores, classified in accordance with the gangue rock. The copper in all cases, except as above specified, is in the form of chalcopyrite. The largest and most important of these reserves are in a pyrite gangue. Next in order of importance are the schist ores and lastly the quartz porphyries. The pyrite, locally termed iron ores, average from 30 to 42 per cent. sulphur. The schist and quartz porphyries vary from 3 to 25 per cent. sulphur. Mining Methods All the orebodies were worked by the overhand square-set method of mining prior to 1908; since then the cut-and-fill, shrinkage and mill-hole systems have been largely employed. But 15 per cent. of the total tonnage now extracted is from timbered stopes. Most of this is from the upper levels where the ore is soft, heavy and more or less broken to the surface. Large reserves of these ores are being conserved for more efficient methods of mining.

It is suggested that the difference in ease of cross-slip among the fcc metals determines the relative amounts of [111] and [100] wire texture which occur in each metal. Since the ease of cross-slip is controlled by the stacking fault energy, it turns out that the amount of [111] texture should increase as the stacking fault energy increases. Arguments and existing data are presented to support the above suggestion. THE fcc metals generally have a dual texture, [11 and [loo], after wire drawing. As yet no fundament explanation exists concerning the variation of the amounts of each texture among the metals. Barrett&apos; has compiled data which show how the relative amounts of each texture vary from 100 pct [Ill] in the case of aluminum to 25 pct [l1] for silver. In this paper it is suggested that the value of stacking fault energy plays a major part in determining the amount of each type of texture. The double texture has its origin in the classical rotation of a single crystal under tension. An equilibrium position of the crystal is one in which three or more equivalent slip systems are operating simu taneously. Most crystals, initially, tend to rotate toward the [1ll] or the [l00] pole depending upon its initial orientation. This single-crystal behavior is essentially the same as the rotational behavior of the polycrystalline metal as worked out by Taylor.2 The next point to consider is whether the [Ill] or [100] orientation is more stable. There have been many discussions of this question3&apos;" which, in general, have lead to the conclusion that 11111 is most stable. For example, Pickus and Mathewson 4 suggested that a [Ill] texture produces more effective flow becake the [ 110] slip direction makes a smaller angle with the [111] than with the [loo]. A crude statistical argument will be presented which again favors the (1111 orientation. In order to maintain a pure [loo] wire texure, slip must occur in equal proportions in four of the six possible <110>slip directions. In order to maintain a pure [Ill] texture, slip must occur in equal proportions in only three of the six <110>directions. Since the <110> directions are the only slip directions in a fcc metal and if it is assumed that each of these six directions is equally probable, then the relative probability of a [1ll] texture vs a [l00] texture may be calculated. ORE from the Minnesota iron ranges is transported from the mines to the loading docks on Lake Superior over four different railways: the Great Northern, Northern Pacific, Soo Line, and Duluth, Missabe and Iron Range, with hauls varying from 60 to 110 miles. Three, major suites of igneous rocks were erupted in the Great Basin in middle and late Cenozoic time. The first resulted in eruption of andesitic rocks in the northern Great Basin between 42 and 34 m.y. ago. Between 34 and 17 m.y. ago this igneous activity migrated to the southwest, ending about 17 m.y. ago with the onset of crustal extension and north-south- trending Basin and Range (rift) faulting. The second volcanic suite erupted between 17 and 8 m.y. ago in the northern Great Basin. The third volcanic suite consists of andesitic and rhyolitic lavas and some basalt erupted between 22 to 7 m.y. ago in the western Great Basin along the northwest transcurrent Walker Lane fault zone. Hydrothermal ore deposits are associated with all suites of igneous rocks.

INTRODUCTION ASARCO Incorporated purchased the East Tennessee Zinc Mines of the American Zinc Company and commenced operating on November 29, 1971. Presently, three mines are operating producing 6620 t/d (7300 stpd). The ore mined is sphalerite which occurs In lower Ordovician carbonates of the upper Knox Group and occurs in open space and fracture filling. Orebodies range from 3 to 46 m (10 to 150 ft) thick with dips from flat to 20º. The mining method is random room and pillar modified by shrinkage and bench stoping. Like other mining departments, the mining group at the Tennessee Mines Division is constantly looking for methods to improve productivity and safety and to reduce mining costs. This involves testing new equipment, trying new ore extraction ideas and making mining plant alterations to meet changes in operating conditions. The areas of change that will be described in this paper are longhole raising, jumbos and LHD loading, shaft sinking, conveyor transport of ore and sublevel haulage developments. LONGHOLED RAISES Raise driving has always been a hazardous occupation for miners and today it is becoming more difficult to get competent people for this kind of work. This problem has led us to seek an easier, safer way in which to excavate raises. The first longhole raises were excavated in the early 1970&apos;s using a Gardner-Denver air trac equipped with a PR-123 rock drill.
