The mechanical properties of a low carbon low alloy steel in the austenite and _-ferrite regions have been examined by thermal-tensile tests using a Gleeble-1500D system at temperatures in the range 600oC to 1300oC and at a strain rate of 10-3/s; these being the conditions that apply to the unbending operation during the continuous casting of steel. The yield strength and tensile strength of steel decreased with increasing test temperature and the embrittlement zone occurred in the temperature range 800oC to 970oC. In the embrittlement zone, the fracture surfaces and microstructures of the tensile specimens were examined by scanning electron microscope. The results showed that the cause of the embrittlement at 950oC in which the minimum %R of A was around 36% is the second phase particles precipitated along the _ grain boundary during deformation leading to inter-granular brittle fracture.

In underground activities ground control is a challenging problem. It affects safety, production, and efficiency. As per statistics of accident data, ?fall of roof/sides? is one of the major causes of mine accidents. In many cases, our experiences and understanding of soil and rock behavior still fall short of being able to predict how the ground will behave. Presently, empirical approaches to design are widely used in estimating mine support parameters. Under these circumstances, expert judgment plays an important role, and such accidents can be obviated with accurate measurement and optimization of data and analysis using the neuro-fuzzy technique of artificial intelligence. Recently, a neuro-fuzzy hybrid approach has become one of the major areas of interest in engineering fields because it gets the benefits of neural networks as well as those of fuzzy logic systems, and it removes the individual disadvantages by combining them on the common features. Neural network and fuzzy logic technologies have common features, such as a distributed representation of knowledge, the ability to handle data with uncertainty and imprecision, etc., like in ground control. Fuzzy logic technique has tolerance for imprecision of data, while neural networks have tolerance for noisy data. In this paper we have focused an intelligent technique, i.e., neuro-fuzzy technique, to approximate the setting load given to the standing support (props) erected for the purpose of supporting freshly exposed roof during underground mining. We have used twelve input variables of rock parameters, and after having trained using a neural network with a sigmoidal function as an activation function, simulation was done to find the output parameter, i.e., the pre-load (setting load)to be applied on props. Outputs of the neural network were again fed to the fuzzy system together with the twelve parameters, incorporating five triangular membership functions for each parameter. Final optimum output was approximated using the MATLAB program, which was found to be satisfactory. Neuro-fuzzy technique has better performance over individual neural networks or fuzzy logic technique.

Pipelines for transporting high concentration slurries are often designed using methods applicable to homogeneous non-Newtonian laminar flow. Many industrial slurries though comprise coarse particles in a non-Newtonian carrier fluid, and existing experimental evidence from tests with such slurries demonstrates that they are not homogeneous. Under laminar shear conditions the coarse particles settle, even in statically stable carrier fluids. To understand this better, the Institute of Materials Science and Technology (IMST) at Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) is conducting ongoing research into the flow of these high concentration non-Newtonian settling slurries. Since pressure gradient and flow rate measurements alone are insufficient to adequately model the flows, an electrical resistance tomography (ERT) instrument developed by the University of Cape Town (UCT)was incorporated into the pipe test loop to determine pipe cross-section concentration and velocity profiles. The software developed to do this is modular and allows different image reconstruction and cross-correlation algorithms to be implemented and tested without significantly changing the rest of the application. At a total frame capture rate of 566 frames/sec a 2.67 GHz Intel Celeron processor with 500 MB of RAM is fast enough to calculate and display velocity profiles in ?real-time? at an update rate of one profile every two seconds. Examples of experimental concentration and velocity profiles obtained using the system are shown and some proposed improvements/extensions to the system are listed.

This report gives the results of mineralogical research on the Nicaro (Cuba) nickel ores and plant products. These studies were made under a cooperative agreement with the General Services Administration (GSA) of the U. S. Government. The purpose of the investigation was to obtain fundamental data that would be useful to other GSA contractors concerned with the Nicaro ores in their research on reduction roasting, leaching, and other phases of the project; and to the metallurgical staff of the Nicaro plant in Cuba. The overall objective of the combined research was to provide data to accomplish metallurgical improvement in the operations of the U.S. Government-owned plant at Nicaro, Oriente Province, Cuba. Particular emphasis is placed on improving the recovery of nickel from the ores and on the possibility of recovering other valuable constituents, especially cobalt. This study presents the physical and chemical characteristics, mineral associations, differential thermal analyses in controlled atmospheres, and X-ray studies of the ores and plant products. The nickel ores, serpentine and laterite, were from the Ramona-Lama Mulo and Ramona ore deposits. Serpentine ore consisted of serpentine-group minerals, basic iron oxide, magnetic iron oxides, chromite, olivine, enstatite, anthophyllite, cryptocrystalline quartz, wad, and a trace of calcite. This ore contained 1.6 percent nickel, 0.05 percent cobalt, 0.86 percent chromium, and 17.4 percent iron. Laterite are was composed principally of goethite with some altered serpentine, quartz, chromite, wad, magnetite, maghemite, and hematite. It carried 1.3 percent nickel, 0.11 percent cobalt, 1.9 percent chromium, and 48.4 percent iron.

[Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCR's) have been widely utilised as fire-resistant dielectric coolants; in electrical equipment used in mining applicants, including transformers, capacitors, electric motors, and electromagnets. In addition, PCB's have been used in hydraulic fluids and heat-transfer fluids and are present in many oil-filled transformers. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recently banned the manufacture of PCB's and equipment using PCB's, and imposed strict requirements on the continued use and disposal of existing PCB equipment. This manual discusses the EPA requirements, suggests ways to decrease the risks resulting from continued use of PCR equipment, and surveys the non-PCB equipment that is available as replacements for the PCB electrical equipment presently used in mines.]

Critical decisions in iron ore project evaluation and production are based on global and local spatial estimates of primary mineral deposit properties (such as in situ geochemical grades) and geometallurgical responses (such as screened, washed or concentrated product yields and grades), which are derived from limited sample data. These spatial estimates are typically made using classical geostatistical techniques, which fundamentally assume that the attributes of interest behave additively. This assumption is generally appropriate for æprimaryÆ variables but æresponseÆ variables may behave non-additively and therefore their direct linear estimates may be biased.In this paper an existing additivity testing mechanism is used to quantify the bias resulting from direct linear estimation of a non-additive iron ore attribute. Data from a magnetite project are used to determine the circumstances under which such biases may be of material impact. In a previous paper the author showed that silver considerably delayed the recrystallisation of lead after cold work. The effect of antimony on the rate of recrystallisation of distorted lead was studied next, and the experiments performed, and the results obtained, are described in this paper. Electrolytic lead was used as a standard of comparison.It was also used to make the lead antimony alloys.This electrolytic lead contained 0.0005% total impurities.It was prepared from commercial lead by fire refining, followed by electrolysis and finally by vacuum casting. The process was described in the previous paper and the description need not be repeated here. PREPARATION OF LEAD - ANTIMONY ALLOYS.The steps taken to procure pure antimony are outlined in the appendix. To make the lead antimony alloys a mother alloy was prepared thus:-A quantity of the antimony (it was received in the powdered form) was placed in a pyrex glass tube, which was closed at one end. The antimony was washed with hot hydrochloric acid (1: 1), then with more dilute acid, then with distilled water, and finally with absolute alcohol; it was dried by warming and evacu,ating the tube. Many longwall mines rely on methane drainage to supplement traditional fan-based ventilation systems. However, the surface production facilities for methane drainage systems, including gob gas ventholes, are commonly located in remote locations, sometimes without convenient access to electrical power, and they may be monitored infrequently. The first evidence that a methane drainage system may not be operating efficiently, or not operating at all, can be an increase in methane concentrations at a return air shaft or underground where the workforce is exposed to the risk of a methane explosion. A solar powered, remote gob gas venthole monitoring and cellular telephone-based real-time data transmission system has been developed and successfully field tested by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) to address this problem. With this system, individual methane drainage boreholes can be monitored from the mine office to determine current operational performance parameters, as well as review past data to anticipate maintenance needs and troubleshoot operational problems.

The 2 360 t/h two module Phola coal preparation plant represents anew era of large plant in the Witbank coalfield designed to extend its life to 2020 and beyond. The plant uses the optimum processing model for Witbank coals, receiving a feed coal size of -50 mm, wet screening it into coarse and small coal fractions 50 x12 and 12 x0.63 mm before processing them in parallel through two primary DM cyclone sections, in order to make a 27.5 MJ/kg export floats product. The sinks are processed through a common high density DM cyclone section to produce a 21.5?23 MJ/kg thermal coal middlings product. The plant design incorporates the largest size DMS equipment used to date in South African coal preparation plants, i.e. 1 150 mm large diameter pump fed DM cyclones and 4.2 m width banana screens. The fine coal is conventionally processed by spirals, whereas the raw coal slimes are filtered using automated plate and frame filter presses and added to either the middlings or discards depending on its quality. The paper describes the database, innovative design concepts, construction, and commissioning.

Traveling through the moors and valleys of Cornwall, England, one is reminded of the extensive mining activities of the past. Abandoned shafts, remains of granite block wheel houses and engine houses, battered brick stacks, old calciners, overgrown water wheel pits, count house remains, overgrown waste pits, and old portals are gaunt monuments to a once flourishing mining industry. Cornwall is bordered on the north by Devon and occupies the south-western most tip of Great Britain. The Atlantic Ocean borders the promontory; to the north, the mouth of the famous Bristol Channel faces the open sea; and to the south, the English Channel separates the land masses of Great Britain and Europe. This part of England is probably the most extensively mined ground in all of Europe. Such great mines as Dolcoath and Wheel Vor, Consols and South Carodan, Levant and Bottalack, remain legendary in the annals of metal mining in the nineteenth century. Many US mining districts hold close ties with Cornwall, Devon, and Wales through ancestors who emigrated from there to work in US mines in the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Their descendants can be found in many major US mining districts, and their terms, expressions, customs, and methods have left an impact on the US mining scene that remains with us today.

Research and development has been carried out on the patented Dynamic Rock Anchor, tradenamed DYNA-ROK and DYNA-ROK PLUS Anchors, which are manufactured and marketed by Ingersoll-Rand Company. This paper will present the results of field testing of this revolutionary new concept in ground control. Geologic conditions will be described where the plastic sleeve of the DYWA-ROK anchor alone is sufficient to provide anchorage and also, where in softer ground conditions, the DYWA-ROK PLUS is applied. The rationale for making the decision as to the type of fixture to be employed, the length of plastic tube to be used and the quantity of resin are explained. Pull test data will be shown from eight different coal seams in the Eastern United States where the product has been installed.

"INTRODUCTION The Iron Mountain deposits were examined in the summer of 1943 by engineers of the Bureau of Lanes, and a diamond-drilling project was set up under the Strategic Minerals Program. Actual drilling operations, under the supervision of a Bureau engineer, commenced November 9, 1943, and were completed on November 1, 1944. When the Bureau began detailed exploration of the Iron Mountain deposits, the Federal Geological Survey participated. Dr. I. W. Newhouse, of the Survey, and Dr. A. F. Hagner, of the Wyoming Geological Survey, were assigned to the investigation.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. The Washington National Cathedral is one of the largest masonry structures in the USA, and like many of its European Gothic counterparts, it required nearly a century to construct. The design was altered during this period, resulting in greater loadings than were originally anticipated on the soil beneath the foundation. When signs of continuing differential settlement were observed in the early 1990's, the Cathedral approached the US Bureau of Mines (now the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH)) for assistance in monitoring the movements of the massive towers and walls. An array of dual-axis tiltmeters was installed about 40m above ground level to measure wall and tower inclination, with the data sent over a dedicated phone line to the NIOSH Pittsburgh Research Laboratory for processing. Mechanical gages and string-potentiometers are also being used to measure motion across cracks and joints, and differential pier settlement is being monitored with optical-level surveying. Data have now been collected for almost 7 years, and they show a long-term settlement trend masked by dramatic diurnal and seasonal thermal movements. The paper discusses the major findings of the study, implications for the future of the Cathedral, and conclusions regarding the use of geotechnical monitoring at major national monuments.

The existing main mine ventilation system for the production areas to the Kiruna mine was constructed during the period 1994-1996 and extended with 4 more shafts, including fan stations, for the sea ore body from 1997-1998. Two papers have been presented from this project at the 7th US Mine Ventilation Symposium in 1995 and at The 6th International Mine Ventilation Congress in 1997. In 2005, pre-studies for a new main haulage level were started. Different haulage methods were presented including ventilation systems. The pre-studies showed that the existing ventilation system, including fan stations for the new main haulage system in the production area, could be extended. However, a new system for the central area, which was not in the initial investment program, would be needed. In the beginning of 2006, a decision was made to design a new ventilation system for the central area to make it possible to get air to the development work for the new main haulage system, independent of the haulage method. This system was operational by the beginning of 2007. The new main haulage system, which was decided to be located on level 1365 m, only requires that the existing shafts be extended - the capacity of the fans seems to be enough. However, the problem is that the existing level 1045 m and the new level 1365 m have to be in operation in parallel for approximately 7-8 years. The challenge for the moment is determining how to ventilate the production areas for both levels at the same time, while simultaneously constructing the extended system. This paper will describe the problems associated with the extension of the main ventilation system and some potential solutions for these problems. The new main haulage level 1365 m must be in operation by 2012.

INTRODUCTION Measurement of certain data associated with nuclear testing necessitates the reception of waves at the instrument location which are unaffected by reflection off internal structures or tunnel surfaces. Therefore, in order to provide necessary facilities for the fielding of experiments in support of the underground nuclear testing program, the Defense Nuclear Agency (DNA) commissioned a cost and feasibility evaluation pertaining to the design and construction of large underground cavities in Rainier Mesa. The effort included research into past experience pertaining to the excavation and support of large underground caverns, assessment of the geological conditions which exist in Rainier Mesa, preliminary design of the chambers and their rock support systems based upon the geological setting, development of mining plans for the excavation of the caverns, and estimation of the cost and manpower schedule to complete construction. This paper summarizes the results of the feasibility evaluation. The investigation was limited to modified hemispherical configurations ranging in size from 24.4 to 91.4 m (80 to 300 ft) in diameter. Two cavity support systems were considered. The first employs internally installed rockbolts as the means of primary rock support while the second involves the use of annular tendon galleries located above the chambers from which primary support members are introduced prior to general excavation. The internal support configuration was considered for cavities with spans of 24.4, 36.6, 48.8, and 54.9 m (80, 120, 160, and 180 ft) while the external support configuration was considered for cavities with spans of 54.9, 73.2, and 91.4 m (180, 240 and 300 ft).

There are no identified mineral resources in the Italian Peak RARE II areas, and there are no producing or developing mines within or adjacent to the study area. Several prospects are in RARE II area M-4945, Idaho, but none were found in the area I-1945, Montana. The Viola Mine (fig. 1, no. 15) vicinity and the Heart Mountain vicinity along the west and south borders, respectively, are being prospected. There has been no recorded production from mines within the study area, but between $2.5 million and $5.0 million worth of lead, silver, and zinc were produced in the adjacent Birch Creek district - dominantly from the Viola Mine - from 1882 to 1889 (Anderson and Wagner, 1944, p. 14). The Viola and other mines in that district are possibly, on basin-margin, carbonate-hosted, lead-silver-zinc deposits stratabound within the Devonian Jefferson Formation. Previous studies have considered them to be hydrothermal, replacement orebodies. Mineral occurrences in the Heart Mountain area are possibly black-shale hosted uranium-vanadium deposits in the Mississippian-Devonian McGowan Creek Formation or perhaps the underlying Devonian Three Forks Formation. The Jefferson and McGowan Creek Formations underlie many scattered segments of the study area. The deposits and occurrence; are not sufficiently exposed to determine tonnage and grade, but sampling indicated moderate resource potential at two properties just outside the study area, the Viola Mine and the Elkhorn Group (fig. 1, no. 33). Local residents indicated there are several thousand tons of zinc-bearing resource; at the Viola line. A 23-ft (70-m) drill hole intercept near Heart Mountain et the Elkhorn Group adjacent to the stuny area contained 0.15 percent uranium oxide

Acidic and basic uranium leach plant residues located on the Navajo Indian Reservation, Tuba City, Ariz., were successfully stabilized against wind erosion using a relatively low-cost chemical method. An elastomeric polymer chemical was applied to the dike areas and a calcium magnesium lignosulfonate to the beach areas of three tailings ponds. The water-soluble chemicals were applied with an automated sprinkling system. The stabilization cost was $335 per acre for the 34.5-acre tract.
