Parts I and II in this series of papers presented the chemistry of medium-temperature pressure leaching of copper sulfide concentrates and reviewed the metallurgical development of a process to effectively recover copper using medium-temperature pressure leaching and direct electrowinning (DEW). Key features of the process were the use of superfine grinding of the concentrate (to a P98 of 12 to 15 µm and P80 of 6 to 7 µm), pressure leaching at 160ºC and 1,380 kPa (200 psi) oxygen overpressure, DEW to produce LME Grade A cathode, recycling of the lean electrolyte to the pressure leaching step and treatment of a lean electrolyte bleed by solution extraction (SX). Recycling of the lean electrolyte provided all of the acid required to effectively dissolve copper and convert approximately 65% to 70% of the sulfide sulfur to elemental sulfur, resulting in an ?acid-autogenous? process referred to as the ?MT-DEW-SX? process. This paper (Part III) discusses the steps taken to develop and complete a large-scale demonstration of the process at Bagdad, Arizona, in 2005.

Rehabilitation, reclamation and restoration are all terms used to describe the repair of land after mining. Here, restoration is used to mean restoring the land's original use, capability or productivity. Effective restoration is dependent on good planning before mining commences and must include a clear definition of post-mining objectives. The physical condition of the land within the mining licence was that of an imperfectly drained soil in permanent pasture, supporting a seasonal supply dairying unit. During the mining process, the soil layers were separated, with the topsoil stockpiled separately. As part of the restoration process, the land was recontoured to encourage surface drainage, with topsoil spread evenly over the recontoured tailings. Low grond pressure machinery was used to minimise soil compaction, with light discing and harrowing used to increase water infiltration. A permanent pasture was sown, with weed species controlled by spraying, both before and after pasture establishment.  Soil testing has been used extensively to ensure there were no nutrient deficiencies that good compromise pasture establishment and performance. Controlled grazing practices were used to ensure that the sown pastures became well established.

A numerical method for discriminating between replacement and sedimentary processes is applied to a folded stratiform sulphide occurrence. It is shown that numerical treatment of chemical analyses from a single diamond drill hole allowed a rapid assignment of the ore to the syngenetic sedimentary class and thereby enabled a revision of the evaluation program concerned with consequent reduction in costs.

The extraction of ore in panel caving operations also involves the coextraction of non-economic material, known as dilution. Forecasting, avoiding, and understanding the mechanics of dilution is critical to longterm planning. The models of dilution that are currently in use in panel caving operations are those by Laubscher (1994), who postulated that dilution is due to gravitational flow and depends on the height of interaction, the column height, and the draw uniformity. This paper presents a back-analysis of extraction and dilution behaviour at Codelco?s El Salvador and Andina Divisions, which use panel caving as a mining method. This analysis was conducted in order to review the existent dilution entry mechanisms and calculation methods. Three sources of dilution were identified. The first source is ?gravitational dilution?, which is due to gravitational flow and mixing as dilution migrates by gravity from a sector located above the panel under analysis. The second source of dilution is ?caving dilution?, which occurs when an air gap is formed in a large area and a sudden propagation of a hang-up occurs, inducing early ingress of waste into the production level from a level above. The third mode observed is ?lateral dilution?, which occurs when the panel is located next to an exhausted sector and the broken material enters the draw column early during draw. In the last two cases, dilution could migrate large distances horizontally. The mine data indicated that draw and caving strategy are key for long-term planning of large panel caves.

During the last two decades, China has expanded its iron and steel industry very quickly, from less than 100 Mt/a steel production to over 700 Mt/a. It caused big increases in both domestic iron ore production and imported iron ore quantities year by year. The mode of iron ore supply has changed from almost all domestic supply to major tonnes of imported ore plus domestic ore supply. Over 200 blast furnaces with volumes larger than 1000 m3 each have been built and put into operation. Sinter machines have been enlarged quickly. There are now 135 sinter machines with =200 m2 sintering area each. Pellet production increased from 11.94 Mt in 1999 to 210 Mt in 2011, resulting from rapidly increasing domestic concentrate supply and rapid development of the grate-kiln process. The typical ferrous burden constitution is high basicity sinter plus pellets plus lump. The pellet proportion increased and the sinter proportion decreased gradually. A lot of technical improvements, like deep bed sintering, sintering with a high ratio of limonite, composite sintering, pellet process optimisation, a high ratio of hematite in pelletisation, blast furnace operation with low-grade ferrous burdens and hazardous element control, etc have been made to enhance iron burden quality and to reduce hot metal cost. Chinese iron and steel production is expected to increase slightly in the next few years. Its overcapacity should be controlled effectively. Given the variations of iron ore supply, pellet production will keep progressing in terms of production scale and pellet quality, the sintering process will be improved further by various measures to utilise different ores efficiently, and ferrous burden constitution will be optimised continuously to realise the lowest cost of hot metal production.CITATION:Sha, Y and Wang, Z, 2013. INTRODUCTION AND SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES An area in the midwest overlying abandoned room-and-pillar mine workings at, shallow depth has been experiencing subsidence movements with associated damage to surface structures. Other coal companies in the area have also been having similar experience. A 16 - month cooperative study between a mining company and the Department of Mining Engineering at SIUC was developed with the following objectives. 1) Determine the extent to which surface and subsurface movements were complete in the area, 2) Identify the mechanism(s) of subsidence in the area, 3) Determine the influence of geology and hydrology of the area on subsidence movements, 4) Observe the conditions of abandoned underground workings with a borehole TV camera, 5) Characterize the extent of damage and monitor possible progressive damage to selected surface structures, and 6) Make recommendations to a) minimize further damage to surface structures in the area, b) identify future areas that may be affected by these movements and c) modify mining systems to minimize these movements.

The Bureau of Mines has developed MULSIM/BM, an improved computer program using the boundary-element approach for geomechanical analysis of mine plans in single or multiple coal seams. This Information Circular presents the improved features of the MULSIN/BM program. The four major improvements are the following: (1) Ability to specify up to 26 material property sets. (2) A new material model capability for gob and inserted materials such as packwalls or cribs. (3) Ability to model a large area with a grid of undivided blocks and to subdivide only a specified fine-mesh portion of these blocks into elements. (4) Specification of extraction ratios for the undivided blocks. In addition, an interactive graphics mesh generator program was written to accompany MULSIM/BM. A complete user's guide and program listings are included within the appendixes. The MULSIM/BM and mesh generator programs are available on tape from the National Technical Information Service.3

A reconnaissance for sources of scandium and a metallurgical investigation of recovery methods for byproduct scandium from uranium mill solutions were conducted by the Bureau of Mines. The work on scandium was undertaken to obtain information on domestic resources and to explore and develop recovery procedures in consonance with the Bureau's long-range program for conservation and wise utilization of mineral resources. The element scandium is widely distributed in the earth's crust in trace amounts, but it seldom occurs as an important constituent in any mineral. An exception is thortveitite, (Sc,Y)2 Si207) a rare mineral that contains various amounts of scandium and yttrium and may contain up to 42 percent scandium oxide (SC203). Knowledge of the chemistry of scandium has expanded rapidly in recent years (1, 4, 9)4 but only fragmentary information is available about the metal because it is still largely a laboratory curiosity without established uses (2, 3). A recent study shows some of the physical proper-ties of the metal are (1) density of 3.05 grams per cubic centimeter) (2) melting point of 1,540° C, (3) hexagonal close-packed structure) (4) hardness of about 50 Brinell (500-kilogram load), and (5) an alloy behavior similar to yttrium and rare-earth metals (2). The price of $2,850 a pound for scandium oxide of 99.9 percent purity and $2,700 a pound for oxide of 99 percent purity reflects the scarcity and complex chemistry of the element.

For many years rockbursts have plagued the mining industry. Although much research has gone into studying this phenomenon only a small proportion of it has been on the actual source mechanism. A study was recently carried out to compliment the previous work done on the micro-structure of these features and to compare it to the micro-structures seen on shatter cones, from meteorite impacts. Both optical and electron-microscopy were used during the study. Samples were collected from rockburst sites by the CSIR Miningtek Rockburst Investigation Unit, and from the collar of the Vredefort Impact Crater. In the optical-microscopy study, the pinnate fractures observed in previous studies were seen in the shatter cones, through all the material. In the rockburst samples, the fractures were observed only in the quartz grains. Quartz micro-crystals were present in the rockburst samples and appeared to be the product of comminution rather than crystallisation. Cataclasite was present on rockburst and shatter cone fracture surfaces. The observations of the shatter cone surfaces with the scanning electron microscope are in agreement with previous work, including the observed presence of melt features, spherules and spheroidal material. The deformation in the rockburst samples is concentrated in the quartz grains, highly complicated with brittle features like sub-conchoidal structures and step structures present. A quartz spherule was identified on one rockburst sample and rhombic-dodecahedra type micro-crystals were present and seen fracturing off quartz grains. It is clear that the rockburst and shatter cone fracture surfaces are quite different; the shatter cone deformation is equally distributed across the sample and involves plastic-deformation, while the deformation in the rockburst material is concentrated in the quartz grains and, with the exception of spherule formation, is brittle. This study agreed with the current explanation for the formation of the rhombic-dodecahedra, and disproved the possibility of it being coesite or fine-grained meta-chert. Although there is no definite evidence of the mechanism of formation of the spherule, it is believed to be the product of vaporization and condensation, and the presence of this material indicates the extreme conditions under which this event occurred.

At the Hanna No. 4-A mine of The Union Pacific Coal Co. a new system of trackless mining is being utilized to extract a 26-ft coal seam. By using shuttle cars and a conveyor belt for haulage in the rooms and panel entries instead of pit cars and panel hoist a saving of 12 cents per ton is expected. Mining is conducted in a 26-ft coal seam laid down on a synclinal structure with active workings on a pitch of approximately ten to twelve degrees. The coal seam is interbedded between a shale bottom and sand- stone top. The coal is friable, high in moisture, and subject to spontaneous combustion. The mine is rated gassy by the State Coal Mine Inspection Department. Mining is conducted at the present time by unbalanced rope haulage an main slopes spaced on approximate 4300-ft centers with the three-entry system driven to boundary lines, strike entries being turned on approximate 1300-ft centers. Panels are driven to the rise between entries at approximately 750-ft intervals with panel rooms driven on the strike 500 to 600 ft long, leaving 150 ft of barrier pillar between each block of panel rooms.

[This is the tenth in a series of retorts on properties of commercial motor fuels, made in accordance with a cooperative agreement between the Cooperative Fuel Research (C.F.R.) The first report rave data on motor gasolines sold during .e winter of 1935-36.3/ The present report presents analytical data for 1,732 samples, representing the products of approximately 50 companies, which, as in previous surveys, include both lame and stall suppliers. In addition, the Pacific coast is represented by data that were averaged by the Pacific Coast Technical Group before being submitted and are published exactly as they were received. The Bureau of Mines analyzed the cycle of secondary gold to determine the quantity of gold not being recovered from scrap, and to identify areas for research to increase the supply of gold from scrap. Secondary gold in 1967 was estimated to be 2.4 million troy ounces; this excludes secondary gold which is recycled within consuming plants. Firms contacted included consumers using about 41 percent of the gold in 1967, And refiners that recovered about 90 percent of the secondary gold. Results of the study indicate that loss of gold is small, and refiners and consumers are accelerating programs designed to reduce recovery costs. With the increasing generation of low-grade industrial scrap, research is needed to improve present recovery techniques and to develop methods to accelerate the flow of secondary gold back to supply.

The apparatus was of a modified Sieverts type1&apos;2 with a reaction tube designed to function also as the cell component of an oxygen pressure gage. The reaction tube assembly is shown in Fig. 1 and described in Table I. The main body is a 1-in.-OD 15 mol pct calcia-stabilized zirconia tube. The ground-glass joint, g, the male part of which carried a prism for optical pyrometer use, was connected to the remainder of the Sieverts apparatus. The calibration of the cell (at its 1000°K operating temperature) for internal oxygen pressures (PO2in) in the range 0.2 to 10 9 atm was made against internal air pressures measured by mercury manometer and McLeod gage. At very low po2in values down to l<Tn atm the performance was checked by comparing pQ calculated from electromotive force measurement when the apparatus was filled with a) pure CO gas and b) a CO-CO2 mixture of the ratio CO-CO2 = 1:0.398, with Po, values calculated from the equilibrium constants of the following reactions at 1000°K:

Rock mechanics properties, i.e. uniaxial and triaxial compressive strength, indirect tensile strength shear strength, Young&apos;s modulus, and poisson&apos;s ratio were collected for coal and related strata from 50 coal seams in 90 mines. The methodology of data organization and retrieval is described in details. The values and .ranges of those properties are also discussed.

"Zinc-iron alloy coatings can be produced by either thermally alloying hot-dipped galvanized steel or by electro deposition. Stelco Inc. produces a thermally alloyed Zn-Fe alloy-coated steel, which is mechanically wiped to remove free zinc.A more extensive use of Zn-Fe alloy-coated steel has been predicted for unexposed autobody and structural part applications, since this material is characterized by good spot weldability and formability, and provides superior corrosion resistance under automotive primers.This investigation has examined the coating composition, corrosion resistance, spot weldability and formability of Stelco&apos;s Zn-Fe alloy-coated steel and found its properties to be similar to those of Zn-Fe alloy-coated steel produced by post coating annealing.IntroductionRecently, there has been increased automotive interest in galvanneal, which is characterized by good spot weldability, good paintabilityt and good corrosion resistance when primed. Stelco produces a thermally alloyed zinc-iron coated sheet product similar to galvanneal. However, this product is produced by mechanically wiping the free zinc from the surface of hotdip galvanize to expose the underlying zinc-iron alloy.The surface of Stelco zinc-iron alloy-coated sheet is matte gray and has longitudinal streaks which result from contact with Kevlar wipers during production (Fig. I). This paper describes the coating composition, corrosion resistance, weldability, formability and surface appearance of Stelco zinc iron alloy coatings and, wherever possible, compares these properties to those of galvanneal."

The Kemess Mine tailings impoundment is retained behind an earthfill and rockfill dam that, when complete, will measure about 140 m in height with a crest length in excess of 1 km. Due to weak foundation conditions, the dam must be raised at a very flat downstream slope approaching 7H:1V. This requires an enormous volume of fill to construct the downstream shell of the dam, which has a low permeability clayey till core and is raised via the centerline construction method. For the initial years of annual dam raising, from 1996 through 2002, the downstream shell of the dam was constructed with non acid generating waste rock from the open pit, 7 km distant and requiring an uphill haul with obvious cost implications. To reduce costs, and to reduce waste haulage constraints on mining schedules, feasibility studies were initiated for raising of the downstream shell using cycloned tailings sand as opposed to open pit waste. This required inclusion of flotation cells for removal of residual sulphides from the tailings to produce the non acid generating product mandated for the downstream shell of the dam. These studies were positive, and cycloned sand construction was initiated in December of 2002. This paper describes the experience gained with cycloned sand construction for the dam. Unique aspects include environmental controls given the sulphide-bearing ores, preparation of the existing shell of the dam for subsequent placement of hydraulically placed cycloned tailings sand, on-dam settling ponds, water management issues, reclamation of the sand dam for erosion control commensurate with the wet climate, and use of the system to construct an above-water beach of non acid generating tailings to increase the closure security of the structure. A particularly unique aspect of the Kemess experience is hydraulic fill operations extending throughout the coldest winter months, as compared to other operations where such placement has traditionally been considered non-viable through the winter months

Flame retardant materials can be incorporated or applied to products, including plastics and textiles, to increase their resistance to fire. Incorporating a flame retardant in combustible materials and plastics is a common procedure to reduce the risk of fires. Flame retardant applications include interior and exterior woods, structural steel columns, fabrics, open and closed cell foam, pressure treated wood, Formica and all types of fabrics for use in commercial applications as well as residential applications where their fire protection products can save lives and valuables. Huntite and hydromagnesite are amongst the most important flame retardant additives materials. Although various areas of the world have potential huntite and hydromagnesite deposits, their place in industry is not well known, and a detailed field search for their deposits has not yet been conducted. They are active during the starting phase of a fire, in that they prevent the spread of an inner or exterior source of ignition to the flame-retarded material, thereby, preventing, delaying or inhibiting the spread of a fire. Flame-retardants are, therefore, just one element among many in a concept for preventive fire safety. To obtain huntite and hydromagnesite concentrates that are more than 95% pure, which are used in flame retardant industry, flotation tests were conducted on low-quality huntite and hydromagnesite ores.

New Zealand has been a significant producer of gold for over a century. Total recorded production is over 850 tonnes. There were three major periods of production: the first and biggest was between 1860 and 1880, the second was between 1895 and 1920 and the third was between 1930 and 1945. After 1945 gold production fell continually until 1980 when the major upward adjustment in gold price led to renewed interest. There have been important new developments in each of the known gold-rich areas: Westland, Otago and Coromandel and exploration for gold in these areas and in previously unprospected regions has reached unprecedented levels.

The mineralogy of the rocks now observed in the Nairne pyrite deposit developed under conditions of internally-controlled sulphur activity during amphibolite facies metamorphism. In the sulphide-deficient metasediments the activity of sulphur was low, and pyrrhotite developed with iron-bearing silicate minerals. At higher sulphur activity, in the sulphide-rich meta-sediments, pyrite formed in addition to pyrrhotite, and the associated silicate minerals are iron-deficient.
