Much interest has been shown recently in the possible utilization of dolomite as a source of magnesium metal, a large production of which is deemed essential for national defense. As a result, many inquiries have been received by the Bureau of Mines as to sources of dolomite. This report has been prepared primarily to augment the Bureau's present published information on the occurrence of high-grade dolomite deposits in the United States. To supplement such data, the report also defines dolomite and related rocks and describes their properties and uses. The uses are covered in some detail in Information Circular 6524 entitled "Utilization of Dolomite and High-Magnesium Limestone," published in 1931 but now out of print. All essential data on uses contained in that report have been incorporated herein, and. have: been supplemented by data developed during subsequent years. DEFINITION Dolomite is a mineral composed of calcium end magnesium carbonates combined in equal molecular proportions, expressed by the formula CaMg(C03)2. "The interaction of amorphous silica particles with several hydrogen bonding agents (H2O,, C2H,OH, C,H,NO) was investigated by monitoring the changes in the bulk and surface IR vibrational modes of silica using photoacoustic spectroscopy, It is argued that the intensity of the silanol band at 3747 cm-1 provides (an inverse) quantitative measure of the interaction of surface groups, along with the shift in the broad hydroxyl band, the interaction following the order C,H,NO > C2H2OH > H2O.The use of IR spectroscopy to study the adsorption on solid surfaces is well documented in the literature,"" For example, hydroxylation of a clean silica surface results in the formation of the free silanol group Si-OH, with a sharp IR band near 3747 cm-1. Further hydroxylation produces a broad band near 3500 cm-1, which is believed to result from various hydrogen-bonded silanol bands leading to a multilayered surface structure of few nm.3-6 Earlier studies had indicated a relationship between the surface silanol band and various chemical activities of silica such as cytotoxicity,7-9 catalysis,10-12 and others.13 Recent studies from our group14-in which the intensity of the silanol band and cytotoxicity of silica, heat-treated at various temperatures up to 1095°C, were investigated-have provided a strong correlation between cytotoxicity and intensity of the silanol band.Coating of silica by PVPNO (polyvinyl-2-pyridine N-oxide with the empirical formula C7H8N0), a strong hydrogen bonding agent, is known to reduce the cytotoxicity of silica, presumably by chemically blocking the silanol groups from phospholipids.15 This interaction of the hydrogen bonding agents with the silica can be studied by IR spectroscopy, and Knozinger16 and Rouxlet and Semples17 have used transmission IR spectroscopy to study the effect of various chemicals on the surface IR modes of silica. However, one of the major disadvantages of transmission IR spectroscopy is that the sample preparation (grinding and mixing with KBr and pelletizing) usually distorts the surface modes (see, e.g., Ref. 14) and there is always a doubt about the effect of the sample preparation on the measured properties, In recent years, photoacoustic (PA) spectroscopy has become the technique of choice for studying the IR spectra of samples in their natural state, since no sample preparation is necessary.18,19 Moreover, according to a recent paper,20 the relative intensity of the surface modes in PA spectroscopy of silica particles is much higher than that in transmission FT-IR spectroscopy. Consequently PA spectroscopy is ideal for studying the surface chemistry, In this work, we have used PA spectroscopy to investigate the interaction of three hydrogen bonding agents (C7H8NO, C2H5OH, and H20) with the silica surface by monitoring changes in the surface IR modes, Our results show that the surface IR modes get perturbed to a larger extent than the bulk IR modes in interaction with the hydrogen bonding agents, Moreover, whereas in the earlier studies, the shift of the broad silanol band near 3500 cm-1 was used as a measure of the interaction with hydrogen bonding agents,16,17 here we show that the relative decrease in the intensity of the sharp silanol band near 3747 cm-1 also serves as a quantitative parameter for the relative surface coverage and surface modification, Details of this work are given below,The Cab-O-Sil samples of silica used here were obtained from the Cabot Corporation of Tuscola, IL, In our earlier studies,14,20 we have shown these particles to be amorphous and about 0.05 am in size, For coverage of these particles with H20 and C2H50H, the following procedure was employed. The in-pipe treatment of slurries with polymer addition shortly prior to deposition is a noteworthy emerging technology of increasing popularity. Although polymer treatment has been shown to substantially modify and improve depositional and dewatering behaviour in a significant number of cases, the impacts of polymer treatment on geotechnical performance of tailings are less well understood. For example, certain combinations of polymer and slurry type have been shown to result in lower final densities at a given vertical effective stress. Despite these lower densities, polymer-treated tailings often exhibit peak undrained shear strengths consistent with untreated material. However, the sensitivity and/or brittleness of the material may be negatively influenced by the looser state created. Although these changes have been studied, most testing available in the literature was undertaken on relatively ‘fresh’ samples of polymer-treated material. However, significant shear may occur following treatment and prior to the commencement of settling and self-weight consolidation as the material moves down the beach.To study the effects of shearing on the subsequent performance of polymer-treated tailings, a test program consisting of consolidation, triaxial and direct simple shear tests was undertaken on presheared polymer-treated material. Materials used were identical to those used in previously published studies on the impacts of polymer treatment in a ‘fresh’ condition. Shearing of the polymer-treated material generally appeared to lessen the impacts of the polymer treatment process. However, the behaviour of the material when sheared indicated that the polymer was still impacting the behaviour of the material in some respects. The results indicate the importance of the consideration of shearing on material behaviour when planning and designing a tailings deposit where polymer treatment is to be implemented.CITATION:Reid, D and Fourie, A, 2015. This paper describes mining operations at the Iron King mine of the Shattuck -Denn Mining Corp. in Yavapai County , Ariz . It is one of a series being prepared by the Mining Division of the Bureau of Mines on mining practices and methods in various mining districts of the United States . The mine and surface plant of the Iron King mine are situated in secs . 15 and 21 , T. 13 N. , R. 1 E. , about 20 miles by State highway 69 east by southeast from the city of Prescott and 1 mile southwest of the mining town of Humboldt on the Prescott -Mayer branch of the Atchison , Topeka & Santa Fe Railroad (fig . 1 ) . A l-mile truck haul brings the mill concentrates (lead and zinc ) to bins on a siding of this line at Humboldt ; the silver -gold bullion is handled separately . Some of the oldest residents in the vicinity of Prescott claim that the original location for the Iron King mine was made in 1880. The earliest recorded production was in 1906-1907 . During the first World War the mine produced fluxing ore for the Humboldt smelter . In 1936 the property was purchased under tax sale , and a mill (140-ton capacity ) was erected in 1938. The capacity of this mill was increased to 225 tons the following year , and a cyanide plant was added in 1940 to treat mill tailings . In 1942 the Shattuck -Denn Mining Corp. purchased the property . A new working shaft was sunk , mine development was speeded , and mill capacity was again increased . The predominating locally formation of this district is a pre -Cambrian schist known as Yavapai schist . The Iron King deposit , which carries gold, silver , lead , zinc , and copper , occurs as a series of lenses in a sheared zone of the pre -Cambrian schist . Down to the 600 -foot level the ore was mined and drawn by the shrinkage method . The cut -and -fill method was adopted for the lower levels . Waste rock for stope fill was provided by block-caving an area on the 600 level . Main haulage drifts were driven in the firm footwall , and crosscuts were driven across the mineralized zone at 100 -foot intervals . Grab samples taken from each car of every working place and channel samples cut every 5 feet in development work are considered sufficient for estimating ore reserves .

For the second consecutive year, the production of crude petroleum in New York has fallen below the 5,000,000-bbl. Mark that had prevailed previously since 1937. In 1945, the output totaled 4,658,000 bbl., a decrease of slightly more, than one per cent from the 1944 production. This total represents 2 per cent of the stripper-well production of the United States, which in turn is I 3 per cent of the total annual yield of the nation's petroleum.

The Bureau of Mines studied the cutting characteristics of point-attack bits to reduce airborne respirable dust and energy during cutting. Linear cutting of two coal types using four bit types at three depths of cut with three space-depth ratios was performed with a modified horizontal milling machine using an optical particle-size monitor for respirable dust sampling. The cutting action of one bit on a rotary hardhead mining machine was mathematically analyzed and compared with the results of the linear cutting test. Airborne respirable dust per unit mass cut (specific dust) was found to be a monotonically increasing function of specific energy. Specific dust and energy decrease with increasing depth of cut. The amount of nonairborne respirable dust was 100 to 1,000 times greater than the airborne dust. The plumb-bob bit produced the most airborne respirable dust and the highest specific energy of the four bits tested. Rotary cutting was a greater dust producer and energy consumer than linear cutting because of the constantly changing depth of cut, space-depth ratio, and attack angle of the bit relative to the horizontal bedding planes. A new cutting technique is proposed to minimize the existing problems of the rotary cutting machines by providing greater production, reduced dust, and minimized methane ignition potential at the face.

Os aços inoxidáveis duplex (AID) possuem boas propriedades mecânicas da ferrita com a resistência a corrosão da austenita. São bastante empregados na indústria petroquímica, de papéis e nuclear. Porém, são suscetíveis à fragilização por hidrogênio (H2). Amostras de AID 2205 foram recebidas na condição de recozimento de homogeneização (1100ºC por 300 s e resfriamento em água). Em seguida, foram laminadas a frio e recozidas a 1100ºC por 2 h e a 850ºC por 24 h. Foram então carregadas com H2. Análises de extração por fusão foram aplicadas para quantificar o hidrogênio no aço. Testes de tração in situ com carregamento de H2 simultâneo foram usados para avaliar a fragilização provocado por esse elemento. Completando as análises de H2, foram construídos espectros de dessorção térmica. A microestrutura foi caracterizada por microscopia eletrônica de varredura, difração de elétrons retroespalhados (EBSD), difração de raios-x e microscopia eletrônica de transmissão. Na condição envelhecida o foram identificadas as fases sigma, chi e carboneto. O AID apresentou uma redução de ductilidade considerável, alcançando 5% de alongamento já no estado envelhecido. O carregamento de hidrogênio não alterou essa condição. A extração por fusão revelou um teor de hidrogênio na microestrutura de até 50 wppm para a condição recozida, enquanto para a amostra envelhecida foi de 10 wppm. Apesar da alta fração volumétrica de fases intermetálicas e carregamento com H2, as superfícies de fratura foram caracterizadas como microcavidades e intergranulares.

"IntroductionAir sampling for airborne contaminants requires a system for moving air, a collection method, and a procedure to determine the quantity of contaminant collected. Because occupational exposure limits and air quality standards frequently are expressed in terms of concentrations, a method of determining the volume of air sampled is also needed. The four principal components in a sampling train are shown in Figure 12-1. The inlet admits the air sample into the train; the collector(s) separates the gas, vapor, or particles from the air; the flowmeter measures the rate or total quantity of air sampled; and the pump (air mover) provides the suction required to draw an air sample through the train. Inlet sampling considerations are discussed in Chapter 21. Various types of collectors are described in subsequent chapters. Flowmeters are discussed in Chapter 7.This chapter will describe the air mover portion of the sampling train and air sampling systems that contain three or four components in a convenient package. The chapter consists of two parts. The first part contains a brief description of the different types of air movers and air sampling systems. The second part consists of tables and figures showing detailed information on a wide variety of commercially available air movers and sampling systems. ient size is filled with a liquid in which the suspected contaminant is insoluble. When the liquid is allowed to escape from the vessel, it is replaced by air from the atmosphere to be sampled. Such an air sample is an integrated sample rather than an instantaneous sample because the mass of fluid requires a finite time to empty. In fact, by employing a large vessel with controlled drainage, this method can be used to move air at low flow rates through a sample collector for extended intervals. The issue of retrenchment is a topic of considerable relevance for the Papua New Guinea (PNG) mining, petroleum and gas industries. The unique environments in which Porgera Joint Venture (PJV) and other similar operations operate are likely to confront these industries with particular dilemmas that will require a range of investments to mitigate the problems associated with retrenchment and employment. This paper discusses retrenchment and employment in the PNG mining industry using the specific case study of PJV. The paper deals with the issue of employment and retrenchment of local workforces in the PNG context, which presents a serious challenge for the resources industry and the achievement of sustainable development objectives. The issue of future retrenchment of the workforce as a result of mine closure is an obvious challenge for both PJV and the Porgeran community at large, who have now come to rely upon both the employment opportunities presented through the mining. This paper examines these challenges and in doing so highlights some progress made by PJV. The paper also discusses downsizing, strategic practices and holistic approaches of retrenchment and employment. In doing so the paper highlights issues that have been overlooked in both academic and applied studies from global and local perspectives in the PNG mining sector. The latter sections articulate the relevance of the information provided by the case study in the wider context of retrenchment. The conclusion promotes a perspective that a great deal more investment will be required by all stakeholders to respond to the challenges of managing retrenchments and mine closure.

Monitoring and control of conventional industrial wet grinding circuits is conceptually straightforward. However, since production objectives and operating constraints can vary widely from plant to plant, there is probably no single overall grinding circuit control strategy which is "best" in all cases; in-variably some compromise is necessary between performance desired under ideal conditions and performance achievable in practice. The recent advent of relatively low cost, reliable, high speed small computer systems is revolutionizing daily operations in increasing numbers of metallurgical processing plants. Of special power and capability is a hierarchical computer network like that currently in use at the Pinto Valley Operations of the Cities Service Company. Several satellite processors for key plant areas communicate with a master computer operating under a powerful multitasking real-time operating system. Hardware and software structure is such that downtime on one of the processors -including the master -does not have a major impact on overall system operation. Admittedly, the powerful, core efficient table driven satellite software, which handles process/computer communication, calculation of nonmeasured process variables, and basic Direct Digital Control functions, is difficult to modify. However, important high level process monitoring, report preparation, graphic display, and supervisory control functions -including economic optimization -can be implemented by project engineers at the plant site. Thus, for example, new control strategies can be quickly examined and rapidly evaluated. Such computer monitoring capability also permits use of short duration process pulse tests for approximate dynamic modeling and rapid calculation of controller tuning constants for single loop dominant systems. Following a brief back-ground discussion of the Pinto Valley Project, we present some of the more interesting results and conclusions of our work over the past year.

"In this paper a review of the current status in recycling technologies for cathode ray tubes is given for both the glass and phosphors. Particular emphasis is placed on the opportunities for the recovery of the rare earth elements (REE) from the phosphor coatings. This is placed in the market context of alternative virgin sources and some of the advantages and disadvantages for REE waste recovery. Future opportunities are explored and also some experimental detail on a low cost leach system is presented. INTRODUCTIONThe disposal of cathode ray tube (CRT) based colour televisions has accelerated world-wide with the development of high definition flat screen panels. The total number of colour CRT televisions that have been sold in the United States in the mid-20th century is estimated to have been over 2 billion (U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, 2007), with high current rates of disposal. It is estimated that of the 20 million televisions annually discarded, 78% are send to landfill (Nnorom, Osibanjo & Ogwuegbu, 2011). However, this easily accessible item of electronics cannot only be turned into a valuable resource using the right recovery procedures, it can also prevent the substantial environmental contamination arising from improper disposal. In this review we focus on previous and current work performed on the recycling of CRT based televisions. Due to the increasing demand for rare earth metals, the main focus will be on the possibilities and challenges of recycling the fluorescent phosphor powders on the CRT’s panel glass.CATHODE RAY TUBE’S GLASS RECYCLINGConventional cathode ray tubes consist of three main parts, the panel, the funnel and the neck (Figure 1). To produce the different colours on the screen, the inside of the panel is coated with a matrix of hundreds of thousands of small phosphor dots. Each dot is one of three types of coloured phosphors, emitting either red, green or blue light. These emit light when excited by a beam of electrons generated by electron guns located in the neck of the CRT. These beams pass through holes in the shadow mask and excite the phosphor coating on the inside of the panel, to give light of variable RGB composition, see Figure 1."

A 1,000-hour test with a gas turbine at 1,200° F showed a working fluid of 1 gr of ash per 100 scf of power gas (79 percent of the ash 7 to 35 microns in diameter) to be excessive for acceptable blade wear for commercial practicability. Blades in the turbine consisted of about 20 percent each of chromium, cobalt, and nickel; 3 percent molybdenum; 2-1/2 percent tungsten; and smaller amounts of manganese, columbium, and tantalum. Erosion of both the fronts and backs of the turbine nozzles was particularly heavy, the trailing edges being worn to a featheredge. Erosion of the buckets was less marked, although the leading edges were somewhat pitted. A refractory-lined combustor performed efficiently and with little abrasion of the lining by the ash-laden gas.

O projeto CR298 se iniciou no final do segundo semestre de 2014 quando o Coque Rate (CR) médio era de 351,0 kg/t. A meta definida foi de atingir média mensal de CR de 298 kg/t em dezembro de 2016, permitindo aumento de produção com alta taxa de injeção de carvão PCI, porém, com baixo Fuel Rate, garantindo competitividade de mercado. Sendo assim, foi desenvolvido e divulgado um novo modelo mental de operação, processo, manutenção e gestão, envolvendo toda a área de Redução, Utilidades e Aciaria. Várias premissas técnicas foram estabelecidas com um plano de ação detalhado para garantir estabilidade no processo dos altos fornos de forma a obter este resultado. A meta foi atingida antes mesmo do planejado: CR 291,3 kg/t em Maio de 2016 e em 2016 a média anual foi de 297,0 kg/t, com Fuel Rate de 484,4 kg/t.

The 18th National First-Aid and Mine Rescue Contest was held in the Memorial Auditorium, Buffalo, New Vork, October 5, 6, and 7, 1959. The meet was sponsored by the Federal Bureau of Mines and the Joseph A. Holmes Safety Association, in cooperation with State mine inspection agencies, management and labor of the mineral extractive industries, and other safety minded groups. The Arrangements Committee, as authorized by the General Committee, made a11 the necessary arrangements for conducting the 1959 contest. Members of the Arrangements Committee were: Harry Gandy, Jr. (chairman), National Coal Association; James B. Benson, Southern Coal Producers' Association; Charles Ferguson, United Mine Workers of America; George C. The element Calcium element has a unique place in the production of etals, intermetallics and other compounds. The unusualness arises from the fact that we have several possible reductants – metallic calcium, calcium carbide, calcium cyanamide and calcium hydride. A review of how metallic calcium is manufactured and utilized is presented. The difficulties involved in producing the metal in large quantities and price implications are noted. . Fundamental thermodynamics of how these act as reductants are shown, along with the historic application of these in metal production during the past century and a half. Alternate applications as to how to control the cost of the reductant is indicated, such as the numerous attempts in making low cost titanium utilizing direct or indirect calcium reductant.

"An extensive mixed-mode fracture toughness testing programme was conducted on coal from three coal fields. A special mixed-mode testing fixture for coal and other geologic materials was developed together with reliable specimen preparation procedures. Dynamic modulus measurements made on each of the 116 fracture toughness specimens showed that these coals exhibit certain degrees of anisotropy. The fracture toughness testing programme systematically varied the loading rate, specimen orientation and fracture loading mode. Loading rate did not significantly effect the fracture toughness over the quasi-static range tested. Orientation did have a significant effect on measured fracture toughness. In the coals tested, the divider orientation and arrester orientation had higher fracture toughness than the short transverse orientation. Data showed that one orientation could have almost twice the fracture toughness as another. The fracture toughness testing enabled certain evaluations of three mixed-mode fracture theories: maximum tangential stress, maximum energy release rate and strain energy density theory. Due to the extreme heterogeneity of the coals tested, definitive conclusions regarding the best mixed-mode fracture theory are not possible; however, data do tend to support the strain energy density theory. INTRODUCTIONThe major aim of this research is to ·develop a fundamental understanding of how fine· fragments of coal (respirable dust) are generated during a fracture process. In a related paper [l], a hypothesis was presented for the mechanism of fine fragment formation during a generic coal material/cutting tool interaction. In this hypothesis, fine fragments are created during coal material/cutting tool interactions that are best described as general mixed-mode fracture processes. Data are required on the mixed-mode fracture behaviour of coal, the physical character of the newly-created fracture surfaces and the character of the inherent flaw structure of the coal material. Accordingly, a test programme was designed that provided some information in each of these areas. The testing effort seeks to measure critical fracture toughness under mixed-mode loadings as a material parameter characterizing in part the tendency of various coals to generate undesirable quantities of fines and respirable dust."

The current Automatic Data Acquisition system developed by some support manufacturers makes it possible to continuously monitor and record changes in leg pressure and advancing ram stroke in every shield, and shearer position at any moment during the mining operation. In order to effectively use the massive data obtained from this system for improving production and maintenance managements as well as providing better roof control at a longwall face, the research currently conducted jointly by West Virginia University and Cyprus-Amax Coal Co. attempts to develop a Longwall Management System for mine operators. The LMS software package runs on a MS Windows NT environment and consists of four sub-systems: (1) Data Interpretation and Analysis; (2) Production Management; (3) Maintenance Management; and (4) Ground Control. This paper presents the details of each sub-system.

"The US Bureau of Mines and the University of Minnesota have developed design and performance criteria for a personal diesel exhaust aerosol sampler for underground coal mines. These are based on the premise that size can be used to separate diesel exhaust aerosol, which is mostly submicron in size, from coal dust aerosol, which is mostly greater than a micron in size. The sampler has three stages: a respirable aerosol preclassifier, a 0.8-um aerodynamic diameter inertial impactor to collect mineral dust and a final filter to collect the diesel aerosol. Using a sample flow rate of 2 L/min and gravimetric analysis to within 0.1 mg, the measure sub-0.8 um diesel aerosol has an a-priori limit of detection of 0.3 mg/m3.A miner working in an underground coal mine with diesel equipment is exposed to a wide array of pollutants from the diesel exhaust. These include CO, CO2. NO, NO2, SO2, diesel exhaust aerosol, and a variety of hydrocarbon compounds. A quantitative definition of the health risk resulting from these exposures remains elusive. During the past several years, though, progress has been made in defining the problem.Results from epidemiological studies by Garshick et al. (1988 ), animal inhalation studies by Mauderly eta). (1986), Iwai et al. (1986), and Brightwell et al. (1986) and in vitro studies by Lewtas et al. (1986) have provided sufficient data for the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NOSH) to recommend that ""whole diesel exhaust be regarded as a 'potential occupational carcinogen,' as defined in the Cancer Policy of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration"" (NIOSH, 1988). NIOSH further stated that ""though the excess risk of cancer in diesel-exhaust-exposed workers has not been quantitatively estimated, it is logical to assume that reduction in exposure to diesel exhaust in the workplace would reduce the excess risk.""The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) has also been directed by an advisory committee to establish a diesel exhaust aerosol standard and to establish regulations to minimize exposure to diesel pollutants in underground coal mines (MSHA,1988). Both reports point out the need for development of measurement techniques for respirable diesel aerosol.In the past four years, the US Bureau of Mines (Cantrell,1987 and Cantrell, et al. 1987), in cooperation with Marple, et al. Results from these studies have been used to develop design and performance criteria for a personal diesel exhaust aerosol sampler for use in underground coal mines.These criteria are based on the premise that size-selectivesampling techniques,can be used to separate diesel exhaust aerosol, which is predominantly submicron in size, from coal dust aerosol, which is mostly greater than a micron in size. In addition to the performance criteria, this paper discusses the laboratory and field test data used to develop the criteria."

Quantities of kaolin in Georgia in-contiguous or single bodies had been established by previous work to be sufficient for an alumina industry. The need for characterization of this kaolin to determine its suitability as an ore of aluminum resulted in the studies described herein. It was determined in an area roughly 7 x 27 miles, known as the Wrens district that approximately 5.9 billion short tons of kaolin averaging 35.55 percent A1203 exist in an essentially continuous clay body. The Macon-Sandersville district consists of discontinuous kaolin bodies averaging 35.28 percent A1203 with an average thickness of 28 feet. Tonnages for this district are not available. One hundred and twenty core samples of kaolin were analyzed for K20, CaO, MgO, Al203, T102, Cr203, Fe203, Si02, P205, and F. The P205 and F were analyzed by wet chemistry methods and the others by electron microprobe. Seventy-nine of the samples were from the Wrens district forty from the Sandersville-Macon district and one from the Andersonville district. Emission spectroscopic analyses were also made to qualitatively determine all elements present for each core. X-ray diffraction studies were made of each core to determine mineral species present. Scanning and transmission electron microscope pictures also are given for each I' core sample. Elevations, overburden thickness, and kaolin thickness are given for each core site as well as map locations. Isopachs for over-burden and kaolin thickness are given for the Wrens district.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines investigated the separation of heavy rare-earth elements (REE) in an ion-exchange process. An ion-exchange column consisting of two sections, a loading section and a separation section, provides high levels of REE loading and good REE separation with an expected processing cycle of less than a month, while current ion-exchange technology requires more than 5 months. A different resin is used in each section: sulfonic resin in the loading section and iminodiacetic resin in the separation section. The separation section is further divided into two segments: the first conditioned with NH4 and the second with acid. Erbium is loaded onto both segments of the separation column as a retaining ion. Bands of mixed REB eluting between separated bands of pure REB were recycled directly to the column. Without mixed-band recycle, over 80% of the REE eluted from the column was separated into fractions with 99% purity of each element; with such recycle, the percentage of separated elements can be increased to around 90%.
