The ability to predict the performance of an explosive relies upon having a Reaction Rate Law and knowing its functional dependence upon various parameters of the explosive. In particular, emulsion explosives have a matrix cell size and may be sensitized with glass or plastic microballoons. The cell size dependence should. be very nearly the spherical grain burning dependence upon web that appears in the reaction rate laws for ball gun powder. The dependence of the reaction rate law upon the parameters of the sensitizing microballoons has been explored using hydrocode analysis of the pressure field produced by the collapse of a microballoon. This pressure field provides an increase in pressure in the vicinity of the microballoon which, in turn, increases the rate of reaction within this field and provides the energy release that must be achieved in order to have a steady state detonation for use as a blasting agent. Hydrocode analysis allows the determination of an approximate functional form for the reaction rate law which shows the dependence upon the size, type, and quantity of microballoons. This presentation includes the theoretical background and the determined functional form of the reaction rate law.

This case study details the process that was used for project planning and permitting for the Greens Creek Mine, located near Juneau Alaska, as seen through the eyes of one of the primary environmental consultants. This case shows how a Company could involve the public and the agencies in the early 1980's and develop a project sensitive to concerns expressed with a high level of environmental protection. Comparisons are made to the current environmental permitting situation. Initial baseline studies performed during the exploration phase provided helpful information for more detailed environmental work in 1980-1981 as planning and permitting formally got underway. Since the mine was in a National Monument and abuts up to a designated wilderness, the Monument Manager administered the project for the lead agency, the USDA Forest Service. Planning and permitting progressed smoothly to a Final Environmental Impact Statement (FEIS) in 1983. Metal prices were depressed when the FEIS was completed and the project permitting proceeded slowly. Ownership changed several times in the mid-1980's. New owners re-evaluated the project and suggested five changes that required a supplemental EA prior to development. The project was fully permitted and started construction in 1988. Operation began in 1989. Today the environmental process in southeast Alaska is now much more complex, detailed, expensive, and time consuming than in the early 1980's. Significant issues discussed that may impede development and operation include overlapping agency jurisdictions, personal agendas of agency staff, conflicts between agencies that impede project progress, changing regulations, and a well organized environmental opposition.

The objective of this study was to determine the magnitude and sources of environmental noise from mining operations near populated areas, to de-scribe monitoring techniques, and to identify applicable existing noise abatement techniques. To this end, noise surveys of a representative sample of mines and quarries were conducted. Noise levels at site boundaries and near specific equipment and ensembles of equipment were measured. Noise exposures in terms of annual day-night sound level were calculated for the boundary noise measurement locations. In addition, the relative sound level contributions were estimated for the mining equipment noise sources affecting the boundary locations. Noise abatement methods falling into three categories were analyzed: equipment practices, operational/administrative practices, and equipment quieting. Selected applications of noise abatement methods were evaluated in hypothetical situations with emphasis upon machinery selection and use. Procedures for measuring noise around mining operations were provided.

The Old Hickory mineral sands ore body in Virginia (>2000 ha) currently supports a productive rowcrop agriculture. Reclamation experiments were implemented on pilot-scale mining pits from 1995 to 1998. Half of each mining pit was topsoiled (25 cm) while the remaining half was left as either (1) mixed tails/slimes or (2) re-graded subsoil over tails/slimes treated with 112 Mg/ha yardwaste compost. Post-mining productivity was estimated to be reduced by 23%, 3%, 27%, and 20% for each crop (wheat/soybeans/corn/ cotton) in sequence when compared to undisturbed soils. One Liberty Place, at 315 m is the tallest building in Philadelphia, PA USA. It is supported on drilled piers socketed in heterogeneous rock. 3832 kN/m2 end bearing and 383 to 766 kN/m2 shaft resistances were selected. Design load distribution was 40% on the base and 60% by shaft resistance. The maximum compression on the corner core columns is supported by clusters of 3 drilled piers. In order to confirm load distributions along shaft and at the base, Drilled Pier G-10 supporting T13-A type outrigger column was instrumented. This column supports 53,849 kN compressive load which includes 13,440 kN windload. This paper reveals details about the process to select the final design for One Liberty Place together with pertinent Information about site geology, foundation construction, quality control, and methods of steel erection. It also presents detailed Information on the type of Instruments, their calibrations, field fabrication, and installation in the shaft of Pier G-10. Readings of concrete temperatures, computed loads, and load distributions are presented for a period from October 1985 through May 1988. The building was completed in 1987.

"Introduction.During the past two years the Bureau of Mines has conducted a study of natural-gas heaters*** to determine (1) what types of heaters literate carbon monoxide; (2) why carton monocide is liberated; and (3) how, by change of design or construction, the liberation of this gas can be largely eliminated, In addition to the above study the bureau has investigated cases in the Pittsburgh dis¬trict where fatalities have resulted from carbon monoxide given off by natural-gas heaters.Since these fatalities were first brought to the attention of this bureau through the press, it is likely that some cases were missed and thus not listed. On the other hand, some cases reported as being due to carbon monoxide poisoning, on investigation were found to be due to causes other than carbon monoride.The cases listed herein were shown in all probability to be due to carbon monoxide. Those in which there is any doubt have been omitted; so have those in which there was part asphyxiation, where the victims later recovered."

Many accidents rightly classifiable as electrically caused are not so classified for the reason that in numerous accidents the part that electricity played in causing the fatality is only suspected. For instance, a workman might receive a shock that would cause him to lose his balance and fall beneath a trip of cars; if no one saw the first part of the accident, the cause undoubtedly would be charged to "haulage." This paper covers a brief study of fatal and nonfatal electrical accidents. The first usually result from direct contact with the electrical circuit or electrical apparatus; the second more often are the result of arcing or flashing due to handling defective apparatus or making repairs on "live" equipment or circuits. It is hoped that helpful suggestions may be offered for minimizing accidents of these two classes.

PT Nusa Halmahera Minerals (PT NHM) is an Indonesian joint venture company owned by Newcrest Mining Limited (75 per cent) and PT Aneka Tambang (Persero) (25 per cent). PT NHM operates two underground gold mines, Kencana and Toguraci at the Gosowong mine site in North Halmahera District, North Maluku Province, Indonesia.Due to several major stope overbreak events at Toguraci, the mining method and sequence was reviewed. The method was changed from a bottom up Avoca stoping approach using waste rock as fill material and leaving sill pillars, to a top down open stope method using paste fill without sill pillars.The revised mine plan originally had stoping progressing from the current level to the base of reserves followed by extraction of the sill pillars in the upper levels at the end of mine life. Geotechnical modelling was conducted on the revised mine plan and it was recommended that the sill pillars be taken early due to the risk of them overstressing and being difficult to recover if left until the end of mine life. The backfill material above the sill pillars is unconsolidated run-of-mine development waste rock or unconsolidated rock fill (URF).Due to earlier attempts to extract sill pillars under URF not being successful in the upper areas of the mine, it was stipulated that the URF above the five remaining pillars must be consolidated prior to stoping. Cost benefit analysis showed this to be justifiable due to the high-grade nature of the ore locked up in the pillars.Grout was initially planned to be injected in one pass through self-drilling anchors (SDA) in a 2.5 m pattern. Initial attempts to do this failed due to the SDA aperture and grout consistency. A modified method was employed using poly pipe installed into open holes that were drilled through the sill pillar and into the URF from below. Repeated application at each location ensured full grout consolidation. Drill holes were used to confirm grout thickness as well as add more grout. Design thickness was based on stress analysis.Despite different URF types being present due to varying quantities of fines, the process was similar for each area. The presence of paste in the URF of one target affected the quantity of grout it received.With a design thickness of 4–5 m of consolidation in the URF, depending on stope width and dip, each consolidated pillar (to date) maintained integrity during the stope operation. Rock mass characterisation is a critical component of effective stope design. Unexpected excessive stope dilution or uneconomic stope sizes can be the result of rock mass characterisation that is not representative of actual stope conditions. Comprehensive characterisation of the rock forming the stope hanging wall, back, ends and footwall is best done by a rock mechanics or ground control expert, however, this is time consuming and is often limited by available access. There are two general approaches for characterising a stope hanging wall for dilution estimating. Detailed classification and mapping data can be collected in local areas where good exposure is available. Personnel, exposure and time are usually not available to do a thorough analysis for all stopes. The stope hanging walls are then broken into lenses or domains and similar conditions are assumed for each area. The second approach consists of using readily available data such as RQD. Other rock mass properties which influence hanging wall behaviour are estimated based on back analysing a few case histories. Stope design is then based on the variability of the one parameter, such as RQD, that is consistently measured for the rock mass surrounding the ore body. This paper presents a third approach which looks, in depth, at the interpretation of geological core logging data for rock mass characterisation. Several rock mass properties that influence stope design, such as joint alteration, rock mass strength, joint spacing and orientations, have been linked to data collected by the mine geologists. This drill hole logging data was calibrated against underground mapping and used to back analyse the dilution prediction for mined-out stopes.

In most surface mining operations, overall project economics is driven to a significant extent by the slope angles that can be achieved within the rock masses present. This is particularly true of precious metal pits in which stripping ratios can be relatively high, although examples from other non-precious metal operations (such as large iron ore and copper pits) can also be found. As a consequence, it is not surprising that in most large (deep) open pit mines, relatively small changes in slope angle (of the order of two or three degrees can translate into changes in project value measured in the tens or even hundreds of millions of dollars. Understanding how this potential value can be realised, and quantifying the associated risks, should be one of the key outcomes of modern slope engineering practice. In striving for optimised slope angles, therefore, mining companies and their specialist consultants are increasingly turning to more sophisticated methods of engineering open pit walls. This paper summarises contemporary slope engineering practice as well as some of the key technical issues that are either currently being researched or will need to be researched in the future. It is written in the context of the slope engineering process; namely, data collection and analysis, failure mode identification and stability assessment, slope design, slope formation, and slope (face) mapping and monitoring (the latter two activities being the primary on-going data collection functions that close the design loop).

Gaseous and particulate exhaust emissions from 20 diesel engines in service at five underground mines were measured with high accuracy instrumentation. The engines that were tested were checked for faults or maladjustments. The vehicle and engine maintenance organization was studied at each mine and an idealized maintenance program was devised. Faults were induced in a new diesel engine to determine their effect on the characteristics of the exhaust emissions. The results, conclusions and recommendations from this investigation are presented in this final report.

The Smelting and Converting El Teniente Process for copper concentrates as well as Slag Cleaning Furnace Technologies to treat slags coming out from the El Teniente Furnaces are widely applied today in Chile and around the world. Several industrial applications of this process have shown their capability to treat copper concentrates in a wide range of chemical and mineralogical compositions. Main operational parameters determining performance of the process are: oxygen enriched air flow rate, degree of oxygen enrichment, moisture content of the solid materials processed, molten material levels inside the vessel, frequency of molten materials tapping, bath temperature and copper losses in slags. In this work, the copper losses in the slags from El Teniente pyrometallurgical process are predicted by calculation from thermodynamic data and compared with those determined by microscopic examination and slag industrial data. Results obtained show that the main part of copper losses in the slag from El Teniente Furnace are mechanically entrapped or floated unsettled droplets of the coexisting matte phase. by the contrary the very low copper losses in the slag from slag cleaning furnace are limited by the physico-chemical form.

The Federal Bureau of Mines, under a contract with Ultrasystems, Inc., investigated the thermal oxidative degradation characteristics of conveyor belts used in underground mines. This included the determination of smoke evolution, glow characteristics, char yields, and the identification and quantification of all volatile decomposition products in the form of gram of specific product formed per gram of belt sample tested. In addition to these investigations, degradation studies were conducted on some pure ingredients used in conveyor-belt formulations. Three basic classes of belts were investigated: neoprene, polyvinyl chloride, and styrene-butadiene rubber compositions. The studies indicate that styrene-butadiene-based belts exhibit good flame resistance and are the least hazardous in regard to overall formation of toxic decomposition products. Under this program, thermogravimetric analysis was definitely established as a method of material differentiation.

Centrifugal model embankments with varying geometries and materials were constructed of- coal waste material, accelerated From 100 to 120 times earth's gravity, and subjected to various throughflow rates until failure occurred. Complementary laboratory tests were performed on the waste materials to obtain strength and permeability parameters for analytical calculations to predict observed centrifugal model behavior. Failures in the form of deep.-seated failure, or erosion and sediment transport or a combination of both, occurred in model embankments with 1V:1-1/2H and 1V:2H slopes when the phreatic surface due to seepage exited on the downstream slope: Positive seepage control, i.e., a toe drain successfully prevented sloughing and failures. Slope stability analyses agreed well, albeit conservatively, with observed model performance. Factors of safety ranged from 0.7 to 1.02 at the instant of failure for models with retrogressing slips as compared with 1.05 to 1.7 for stable embankments, These models verified existing criteria of a minimum safety factor of 1 3 and the necessity of positive seepage control.

The improvements in mechanical equipment and plant design have contributed in the reduction of operating costs; in some instances a saving in the capital cost per ton of daily capacity milled has resulted.

North American railroad locomotive operators (engineers and conductors) are exposed to multi-axis vibration and shocks (1, 2). A recent epidemiological survey showed a prevalence of serious type of neck and lower back disorders nearly double that of a control group (3). Ergonomic working conditions are important co-factors in a vibration and shock exposure risk assessment (4, 5). The goal of this study is to illustrate typical work stations (cabs and seats) in US/Canadian type locomotives and assess shock related exposure risk by calculations of the new proposed shock risk indicators according to the new ISO 2631-5 (2004) (6). Methods Locomotive cab and seat inspections were conducted and operators’ activities were assessed by a trained observer. Field measurements (n=50) were obtained during normal revue service following generally accepted guidelines (ISO 2631 (1)). A sub-sample of n=20 locomotives were selected for the calculation of proposed shock indicators (ISO 2631 (5)). Results There has been little change in basic locomotive cab and seat design in the U.S.. Two locomotive cab design concepts are used: the Association of American Railroad (AAR) Control Stand and in newer series wide-body locomotives the “Control Consol” (Figures 1-2), with varying seating conditions, but frequently subjecting the operator to an awkward body posture in addition to the vibration and shock exposure. Bioleaching of nickel laterite ores is the extraction technology based on the use of heterotrophic micro-organisms and their organic acid products to dissolve metals from oxide minerals. This study examined the chemical leaching kinetics of limonite and nontronite ores with metabolites including citric, lactic and malic acids. The leaching process was found to follow the chemically controlled model. The leaching kinetics was found to be significantly influenced by the acid strength or dissociation of acids in solution. Although increasing the acid strength increased the rates of leaching, this trend was not indefinite. An optimal acid concentration that defined the fastest leaching rates was identified for each acid. The amenabilities of the minerals hosting the nickel and cobalt in limonite and nontronite to organic acid leaching were also established.
