"In the paper a criterion for the evaluation of the sharing of the lateral loads in a piled foundation is presented. It relies on the the compatibility condition between the rotation of the rigid pile cap and the rotations of the pile heads, following in that the criterion suggested by the Eurocode 8 - Part 5. This assumption leads to an analytical solutions which allows to deal with the sharing of the lateral loads and moments by means of two main interaction parameters only. A sharing domain is also derived and it shows the role played by the eccentricity of the lateral load on the values of the axial forces and of the bending moments at the head of the piles.INTRODUCTIONIt is well known that the interaction among soil, piles and foundation is one of the most complex subject to deal with in Geotechnical Engineering. Its rigorous study needs to employ suitable finite element software nowadays available and able to take into account the non linear behavior of the soil as a continuum and the inelastic response of the structure. A deep insight to the topic of the sharing of the loads cannot obviously renounce to this approach.On the other hand it is a daily need of the designers to have at their disposal simple tools that allow to make preliminary evaluations of the basic equilibrium conditions. To this purpose many methods of analysis have been developed in the past to face the sharing of the loads in a simplified version. The present contribution follows this way trying however to introduce some improvements that leads to find a solution that satisfies both the equilibrium of the forces and the compatibility of the movements (Lenzi, Gambi, Olivucci, 2002). The proposed model allows to identify the basic parameters which govern the sharing of the lateral load and it allows to perform also parametric analysis and quick checks that may be useful in the design of the piles."

Global practice in hydrometallurgical production of copper cathode by electrowinning is reviewed, based on individual plant operating data for 2018. Data from 29 plants were collected, representing 38% of world cathode copper production. Similar surveys were carried out in 1997, 1999, 2003, 2007, and 2013. This survey includes analysis of historical and current data. Evolving trends in operating conditions and performance, as well as equipment design and process technology choices, are analysed and differences in operating practices with location are assessed. Examples of recent technology and operational choices to increase productivity, improve copper quality, and decrease electrical energy consumption are discussed. Significant project expansions, particularly in Africa, and the consolidation of numerous small Chinese operations are also presented. INTRODUCTION Global trends and operating practices in copper electrowinning (EW) in 2018 are reviewed and evaluated. Similar world and African surveys were carried out in 1997, 1999, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2007, and 2013 (Robinson, Davenport, & Jenkins, 1997; Jenkins, Davenport, Kennedy, & Robinson, 1999; Davenport, Jenkins, Robinson, & Karcas, 2001; Robinson, Garbutt, & Davenport, 2002; Robinson, Davenport, Jenkins, King, & Rasmussen, 2003; Robinson, Davenport, Moats, Karcas, & Demetrio, 2007; Robinson, Sole, Sandoval, Moats, Siegmund, & Davenport, 2013). Contributing operations included sites from the USA and Mexico (9), Chile and Peru (6), Laos (1), Kazakhstan (1), and Africa (9). Despite fewer contributions compared with past experience, this survey nevertheless represents 2018 copper EW cathode production of 1.76 Mt, or about 38% of world production of 4.64 Mt (International Copper Study Group, 2017). This drop in permission to contribute is attributed to the more competitive nature of the industry and unprecedented production pressures; furthermore, several operations in Australia have shut down, while large operations that are currently commissioning or ramping up to full production in Africa and Asia declined to participate. Of the Chinese operations, which represent an increasingly important proportion of global electrowon cathode copper, particularly in Africa, only Tenke Fungurume (Democratic Republic of Congo; DRC) participated in this survey.

The database accumulated by such systems broaden process knowledge, thereby reducing costly errors and plant downtime.IntroductionThe ASARCO Hayden Plant is located approximately 80 miles southeast of Phoenix, Arizona. The plant was commissioned in 1912 for the purpose of smelting copper concentrates from the surrounding mining district. Copper was produced for many years using calcining, reverberatory smelting and copper converting techniques. With the stricter environmental controls of the 1970's, the smelter experienced substantial declines in efficiency and productivity. It became necessary to identify and install a new smelting technology to maintain the viability of the Hayden plant.In 1980, after evaluating several smelting techniques, ASARCO management selected flash smelting as developed by International Nickel Company (INCO). One hundred and thirty-two million dollars was allocated for the project and construction began in 1982. Construction was completed and the new plant came on line in November of 1983."

Para el análisis externo se realizó una evaluación en colegios, con el fin de conocer si hay interés en carreras relacionadas al rubro de la minería por parte de las estudiantes de cuarto y quinto de secundaria de los colegios aledaños. Asimismo, se evaluaron institutos y universidades para identificar la cantidad de mujeres que estudian carreras relacionadas con el rubro. En cuanto al análisis interno, se identificó la perspectiva tanto de las colaboradoras propias como de empresas terceras, así como se analizó el grado de aceptación por parte de los líderes y colaboradores.

Hot-dipped heat-treated zinc coatings on sheet steel were examined with X-rays. The phases identified were compared with those listed in the modern literature 01 the zinc-iron system. The zeta (FeZn13) phase is shown to correspond to the phase found by Schueler (1925) in heat-treated zinc coatings. An investigation was undertaken to determine the phases present in hot-dipped heat-treated zinc coatings on steel sheets and wire. This kind of coating on wire was studied some years ago by Schuelerl by microscopic and chemical methods. He reported a new phase, FeZn10. Later, Clark and Stillwell,2 using X-ray crystal analysis, identified a new phase in ordinary galva. nized wire, which was assumed to be the FeZn10 phase. Since the extensive review of the iron-zinc alloys presented a few years ago,3 much new work has been published, some of which5-l6 was too late to be included in the recent edition (1939) of the American Society for Metals' Handbook.4 Figs. 1 and 2 are reproductions of the latest iron-zinc diagram proposed by Schramml1 as a result of his investigations by microscopic, thermal, magnetic susceptibility and X-ray methods. Table 1 summarizes all the known published X-ray data of the phases Present. The solubility of iron in zinc has been determined by x-ray methods.10 In the same manner the homogeneity range of the P phase was studiedlo using the principle that the parameter of an intermetallic compound changes while the concentration of One of the constituents changes. Embora a resistência ao desgaste seja geralmente a principal propriedade avaliada decorrente da adição de terceiros elementos em ligas Al-Sn, não somente os fenômenos tribológicos são responsáveis pela deterioração gradual das peças, mas também os fenômenos relacionados à corrosão. Dessa forma, o presente estudo objetiva analisar o efeito de características microestruturais formadas durante a solidificação transiente da liga Al-9%Sn-5%Zn na resistência à corrosão em solução 0,06M NaCl investigada por polarização potenciodinâmica e espectroscopia de impedância eletroquímica. Foi observada uma morfologia microestrutural caracterizada por dendritas da fase α-Al com concentrações de Zn tanto na matriz dendrítica quanto em regiões ricas em Sn localizadas nos contornos interdendríticos. A evolução dos espaçamentos dendríticos primários (λ1) também foi correlacionada com parâmetros térmicos de solidificação. Finalmente, constatou-se que a amostra com microestrutura mais grosseira, ou seja, λ1 = 89,6 μm, apresentou comparativamente menor densidade de corrente de corrosão e maior resistência à polarização.

Central Colliery was developed to exploit large underground reserves in the German Creek lease. It was planned from the outset as a retreating longwall operation and is the first longwall mine in Queensland. Longwall mining is not new to Australia but all previous experience has been confined to the coalfields of New South Wales. There was no precedent for longwall extraction in the markedly different geological setting of the Bowen Basin in Central Queensland. Various investigations were thus carried out during the initial development of Central Colliery, prior to the installation of the longwall, to ascertain the geotechnical characteristics of the coal seam and the adjacent strata and to predict the performance of the heading and pillar design as mining proceeds to depth. Laboratory tests showed the coal to be weak with an unconfined compressive strength of 9.6 MN/m2. Site inspection and geophysical correlation revealed a shear zone and extensive intraformational shear planes in the seam. The latter were found to exert a controlling influence on rib reaction in the headings. This behaviour was predicted by finite element modelling of the development headings which indicated that mining induced stresses in the coal would be relieved by block movement of the ribs. A chain pillar width versus depth curve was established for yielding pillar design based on empirical and computational methods. This gave pillar widths from 25m to 48m over the proposed depth range of 150m to 300m. Finite element modelling of the 25m pillars chosen for the first gateroads confirmed the overall stability of the design but suggested that rib spall could be significant in the adjacent tailgate. LEAD, silver, and zinc, in quantities of economic importance are found in the Aguilar ore. The lead occurs as galena and the zinc as sphalerite and marmatite. The silver occurrence is more complex. Pyrargyrite and proustite have been identified only occasionally. Galena is silver-bearing and so are the various other sulphides, though to a lesser degree. The principal nonsulphide gangue minerals include calcite, quartz, wollastonite, rhodonite, and various calcium, aluminum, and iron silicates. A typical analysis of, the ore is: Pb, 11.2; Zn, 12.3; Fe, 4.4; Mn, 2.2; Cu, 0.15; S, 11.2; CaO. 7.6; "Insoluble," 50.1 percent; and Ag 263 g per ton. Crushing is done in three stages. The primary crusher at the mine is set to deliver about a 5-in. product. The crushed ore is then transported to the secondary crushing plant by a 3-km cableway where the general practice is to hold the product of the first Symons to about 1 in., and of the second Symons to about 1/2 in. When the ore is soft and rich the product of the first Symons is by-passed directly to the ball-mill bins. Dust control in the secondary crushing plant is effected by enclosing the dust-emanating sources and exhausting the enclosures with a Clarage No. 18 fan driven at 1300 rpm by a 20-hp motor. Use is also made of spray water at one or two critical places. Every effort is made to keep the air free from visible dust. Dust counts taken at the working places show dust concentrations of less than six million particles ner cu ft. The composition

Early testwork was carried out to select the plant process design criteria and flowsheet selection. Additional testwork was carried out during the feasibility study to support the optimization of the plant design criteria. The test results showed that the recovery of gold was not very sensitive to grind size in the range of 75 to 105 microns. An additional result was that the presence of lead nitrate did not improve the kinetics of gold leaching. This conclusion was supported by the low content of sulphides in the ore. It was also found that the presence of lead nitrate increased copper dissolution, producing the potential for an increase of copper reporting to electrowinning, which is detrimental to the overall gold recovery process. The use of oxygen in leaching was investigated to increase leach kinetics. The results of leaching tests to compare using oxygen instead of air indicated that, due to the improved leach time, it was possible to reduce the number of leaching tanks from twenty four (24) to twenty (20).

To Install Waste Heat Boiler at White Pine White Pine Copper Co.'s smelter 18 miles southwest of Ontonagon, Mich., will have a six story high boiler utilizing what otherwise would be waste heat from a copper reverberatory furnace. Designed and under construction by the Babcock & Wilcox Co., the boiler will supply steam to a turbo-generator furnishing power for the projected development. The boiler will be in line with and following the reverberatory furnace. Using waste heat from the furnace in place of fuel for steam generation, about 50 pct of heat in the fuel originally supplied to the furnace will be recovered by the waste heat boiler. Exploration conducted over the past 15 years at White Pine, wholly owned subsidiary of Copper Range Co., has disclosed reserves of 309 million tons averaging 21.3 lb of copper per ton. Ore mineral is chiefly chalcocite (Cu2s).

The increasing demand for iron ores prompted the Bureau of Mines to investigate the sources of past production in Kentucky to determine whether reserves of usable ore still exist. Preliminary investigation showed that the holdings of the Rose Run Co. were the most promising, inasmuch as the deposit had not been exhausted by past mining and the property was near railroad facilities and but 80 miles from the blast furnaces at Ashland, Ky. The Bureau conducted a churn-drilling and sampling program to investigate the depth, thickness, and iron content of the ore beds so that they might be evaluated as a possible reserve of low-grade iron ores. The Rose Run area in Bath County, Ky., was explored by 74 churn-drill holes totaling 2,059.4 feet of drilling and 4 cuts and test pits. Fifty-seven drill holes and the four test pits penetrated the ore bed at an average depth of 22 feet. The bed had an average thickness of 2.54 feet. Analyses show that the calcium and magnesium carbonate content is more than sufficient to flux the silica and provides an excess that needs an admixture with other siliceous iron ores.

MDL Rock Lasers has undertaken successful mapping trials of abandoned mine workings using its underground cavity scanning system. The work was being performed for Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines (KCGM), Australia's largest gold producer. MDL Rock Lasers supplies underground surveying systems to the mining and quarrying industry KCGM's Fimiston Super Pit, located in Kalgoorlie, Western Australia, is Australia's largest open-pit gold operation. Fimiston's final pit design is expected to be 3.7 km (2.3 miles) long, 1.5 km (0.9-miles ) wide and 540 m (1,770 ft) deep. During the early days of Australian mining, underground operations were labor intensive. Mining was selective and generally narrow stopes were mostly backfilled. Improved processing technology and mine mechanization during the 1970s and 1980s has permitted larger scale operations to adopt less selective underground-stope operations. The "super pit" concept was a logical step for mining companies working toward economies of scale. However, the industry recognized that there was no precedent for excavating a 500-m- (1,640-ft-) deep open pit through ground previously affected by old workings. To appreciate the geotechnical challenge facing KCGM, it is necessary to consider that under the pro¬posed area at the open pit, stoping reached a level of 1 km (0.6 miles) and was supported by more than 2,000 km (1,240 miles) of development headings. The company was fortunate because plans were available for the Golden Mile underground operations. The existing plans were interpreted by the mine's geotechnical team and computer models were constructed of the underground workings. These models can be imported into three-dimensional mine planning packages, such as the Vulcan's Unix-based software, Envisage, to assist analysis and design. This prior knowledge of the workings provided the focus for investigating and confirming ground conditions using probe drilling. After several iterations of drilling, followed by detailed analysis, several decisions were made relating to the nature of the ground and the mining approach to be taken. It was recognized that the stope models were not perfect due to hu¬man error, lack of original survey information and progressive deterioration in ground conditions. It also became apparent that the sole reliance on probe drilling was inefficient in terms of time and quality of information. This was particularly true in complex areas where stopes are in close proximity. A major concern was the presence of open stopes (voids). In many cases, stopes consist of combinations of filled and void sections. The condition of pillars within these underground workings is extremely important. In time, pillars collapse and voids will propagate in upward and lateral directions. So systems needed to be developed that allowed rapid and accurate verification of ground conditions. KCGM was introduced to MDL Rock Lasers while investigating technology for underground mining. The two companies decided to use the C-ALS, MDL Rock Laser's underground laser, cavity scanning system, to improve the management of mining through affected ground. This system was to be used in conjunction with probe drilling and void mapping activities. A field test in one area of the Fimiston Mine verified the capability of the C-ALS system to quickly and efficiently assist in this decision making process. The C-ALS scanner features lightweight, carbon fi¬ber alignment rods from Measurement Devices Ltd.'s (MDL) Boretrak MKII. This is a borehole deviation system that stops the two axis measurement head rotating and lowers the system down a borehole. The scanner is deployed by a 110-mm (4.3-in.) borehole, up, down or sideways. The operator can then carry out vertical and horizontal plan section scans at any user specified ARC (an angular increment of 2°) or the distance between two points on the ARC (CHORD) increments. Windows '95 software enables the operator to control the cavity scanner remotely, surveying the area in real time. The system makes data quick and convenient.

Cold rolling is one of the most important techniques in metal forming since the cold rolling products are almost finished product, The product quality of this process is widely influenced by friction in the roll gap; therefore, controlling the friction and other parameters affecting the cold rolling is very important in order to have a product with high quality, Among the cold rolling parameters, the pressure distribution or friction hill within the roll gap is known as the most significant one, In this study, a new software (Matroll), is introduced which can determine the coefficient of friction (COF) and plot the friction hills for an industrial mill, Besides, based on rolling equations, it offers about 25 rolling parameters as outputs. To verify the software operation, the real industrial rolling data was used as inputs, The results (outputs) are in good agreements with the findings of other researchers, The COF values are very reasonable, The friction hill shows that COF is not constant over the whole arc of contact.

Most of the mineral deposits found in North-East India remain unexploited due to inadequate knowledge on their status, economic viability, and requisite mining technologies. The aimof this study is to characterize the multimetallic magnetite mineral deposit from the Nagaland area in India. The quality of iron ore was evaluated to establish its suitability as a raw material for iron production. Detailed studies were conducted to establish the composition and properties of the samples. X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray fluorescence (XRF), electron probe micro-analyzer (EPMA), and petrographic microscopy techniques were employed in the investigation. Shatter and tumbler test was performed for analyzing the mechanical properties of the ore. XRD studies indicated that magnetite is the major mineral with low amounts of martite, maghemite, and quartz. XRF/EPMA results indicated that magnetite contains 35–65 wt.% of iron and 1–5 wt.% of chromium. It also confirms the presence of Ni and Al up to 1 wt.% and Si up to 6 wt.%. Chromite-rich ore contains up to 30 wt.% Cr and 15–20 wt.% of Fe.

In connection with, a stream-pollution-research project, a colorimetric method was developed for concentrations of 1 to 30 p.p.m, of pine oil in water. The method depends on the stable bluish-green color produced when pine oil is reacted with vanillin-hydrochloric acid reagent at 60° C. for 25 minutes. The colorimetric reaction actually determines alphaterpineol, the principal component in pine oil. Some waters may require a special preparation in which ion-exchange resins are used to remove interference. ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS The author wishes to express his appreciation to A. A. Seasonally adjusted new factory orders for primary metals declined in January, February, and March, especially in the steel industry. The decline was part of an apparent slowdown for the entire manufacturing sector. Orders for all durable goods, including not only primary metals, but also clay, glass, and stone products, fabricated metal products, machinery, and transportation equipment, fell in January and February. In March, orders rose a slight 0.8%. According to the U.S. Department of Commerce, the downturns in durable goods orders in January and February were the first back-to-back declines in 3 years. They were largely attributed to a drop in orders for transportation equipment, mainly auto-mobiles and aircraft, while the small gain in March was due to a surge in aircraft orders. Higher interest rates may be partly responsible for the slowdown in durable goods orders over the past 3 months. The higher rates have also hit the construction industry--another major end-user of minerals. Construction of new homes and apartments fell by a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 5.4% in March, following a 12% decline in February.
