"A new method is introduced for the simulation by computer of the flow of liquid underground. The method has application in simulating, for example, liquid withdrawal systems, injection systems or injection-well systems. The computer simulation of liquid flow permits the utilization of the known properties of the rock in developing a model of the permeable rock mass.The flow properties of the rock at a specific site arc generated statistically using a random number generator. After defining in this manner the rock properties of each element in the computer grid, the streamlines or flow paths of the liquid are traced using the new method. The simulation is designed especially for computers. The meandering character of the liquids paths is displayed clearly as the fluid moves underground, thus providing the technical information required for the control of the movement of liquid."

"Recently, lining life of the INMETCO submerged arc furnace has been dramatically extended from an average of eleven months in the 1980s to a current record of 34 months. This paper summarizes test work and operating results describing the development and establishment of slag parameters that reduce corrosion of the magnesite-chrome refractory lining.The desired slag parameters are now maintained by utilizing waste streams as slag additives. This paper also discusses the successful evaluation of a rebonded-fused-grain magnesite- chrome refractory as a lower cost, more thermo-mechanically forgiving alternative to a fused-cast magnesite-chrome refractory that had been the refractory of choice in previous years at INMETCO.IntroductionSince 1978, INMETCO, a wholly owned subsidiary of INCO Limited, has been well known for recycling by-products from the production of stainless steel, namely, EAF bag- house dust, mill scale and grinding swarf. INMETCO operates the only smelter in North America dedicated to the recovery of nickel, chromium, and iron from hazardous and nonhazardous waste. The process was developed in the research laboratories of INCO. In recent years, the process has been successfully modified to accept a wider variety of other specialty steel waste streams including: spent pickling solutions, pickling and waste water treatment filter cakes, acid scale, carbon brick, spent bag-house bags, torch cutter dust, spent dolomitic and chromium-bearing refractories, and rechargeable nickel-cadmium batteries."

Current technological advancement has increased the exploitation of deeper ore bodies using underground methods. In certain cases, the mineral deposit starts near the surface and continues deep within the earth's crust. Such deposits are best mined with both underground and surface methods. Two main techniques are used to determine the optimal transition depth from surface to underground - a disintegrated approach and an integrated approach. Both methods have limitations in their use to determine the optimal transition depth. The objective of this research is to investigate the conditions in which an integrated approach to the transition depth problem is superior to a disintegrated approach. Three binary integer linear programming models are developed for this purpose: a surface and underground model for the disintegrated instance and an integrated model. A case study is performed to validate the models, with a comparative sensitivity analysis to obtain operational insights.

Electric - smelting studies were made on titaniferous materials obtained from the Klukwan and Snettisham , Alaska ; Choteau , Mont .; and Iron Mountain , Wyo . , deposits with the objective of determining the feasibility of producing pig iron and an enriched titania slag in one test series and pig iron alone in another test series . In addition , related studies were conducted to determine the amenability of Choteau crude ore to wet -magnetic separation and to determine the quality of steel that could be produced from the titaniferous pig iron . The continuous smelting tests were made in a three - phase , submerged - arc , electric furnace , and the laboratory steelmaking tests were made in a singlephase electric - arc furnace . A continuous , belt - type , wet - magnetic separator was used in conjunction with a ball mill and a spiral classifier in recovering titaniferous magnetite from the crude Choteau ore . Pig irons containing less than 0.05 percent phosphorus or sulfur were readily produced from the titaniferous materials ; iron recoveries ranged from 92 to 98 percent . The Choteau ore was ground to minus 65 - mesh to produce a concentrate containing 60 percent or more iron . The steel produced from the titaniferous pig iron was a high - quality product .

The term "fusain" was first adopted from the French by the American geologist J. J. Stevenson in 1911, according to Wheeler, (1),3 who applies it to that portion of coal resembling charcoal, which he treats as one of the four ingredients of banded bituminous coal. The term has since been adopted by American writers. The Germans use it with slightly different spelling - namely, fusit. It is the equivalent of "mother-of-coal" and "mineral charcoal" of the earlier British writers. The English word fusain is also applied to "a crayon of fine charcoal" and is derived from the Latin root fusus. OCCURRENCE OF FUSAIN IN COAL AND ITS RECOGNITION Fusain is fairly widely distributed in coals of all ranks in varying amounts. It is almost always present in very thin sheets between the bedding planes of the banded coal constituents and presents a jet-black silky appearance who n the coal is split away. As fusain has little cohesive power the coal splits readily along the planes where it occurs. Such fusain bands often attain appreciable thickness -- frequently 1/4 to 3/4 inch. -Beet (2) has reported a maximum thickness of 2 inches for fusain partings, and Sinnatt (3) has found it in the form of plates and lumps; one lump taken by him from the Peacock mine weighed 3-3/4 pounds. Bore (4) has found it in coal balls. Sinnatt (3) states that fusain occurs in two forms, "the first a hard compact variety occurring rather rarely, which can not be pulverized by pressure of the fingers the second type is the common substance" -- that is, a very friable, easily pulverized material. The writer has also found the two types of fusain in the same coal bed and has observed that the hard variety contained considerable calcium carbonate, which probably entered the material in situ by infiltration. Sinnatt further remarks that the layers of fusain (soft type) usually contain less moisture than the coal (or lose it more readily on exposure), and when exposed they quickly change to flocculent powder so that the fines of the coal as mined are likely to contain a major proportion of this substance.

This Bureau of Mines report provides information on 138 waterflood projects in Wyoming. Injection was in 25 producing zones and 65 fields. Specific data presented include field location, discovery and development, water supply and injection, oil and water production, estimates of oil in place, and oil recoveries by primary and secondary methods. The 138 projects studied will, if successful, recover about 800 million barrels of secondary oil. Almost all of the injection water is from deep water wells.

Nobody has, as yet, made a perfect machine. Therefore, when a machine is operating and functioning as it is designed to do, there is always some vibration present. This is easily and simply measurable with present-day equipment and any increase in the amount of vibration will indicate a potential failure. When an increase is noted, vibration analysis can pinpoint the cause of the potential failure and remedial action can be taken before an unscheduled shutdown is necessary or a breakdown occurs.

Stillwater Mining Company (SMC) has an extensive history with tunnel boring machines (TBM) at the Stillwater and East Boulder underground PGM mines in Montana. The most recent TBM used is for the Blitz Project, where a 5.5m (18ft) diameter main beam unit, commissioned in Q3 2012, is being utilized to drive a 6,975m (22,500 ft) ventilation and haulage level East of the Stillwater Mine for the Blitz expansion project. The assembly/commissioning of the TBM, institution of the planned diamond drilling program, application of ground control systems, and the current tunneling metrics will be covered.

Driven by an increasing need for water conservation, coal mine operators in the upper Isaac River catchment have placed significant emphasis upon the reuse of water. This initiative led to an overall increase in the salinity of mine waters. The ionic composition of this water differs from local stream water in that concentrations of sulfate are higher than average stream concentrations by ten per cent, while concentrations of bicarbonate and calcium are lower. When this water is discharged into ephemeral streams in semi-arid environments there is potential for this increased salinity and altered ionic composition to impact upon the ecosystem processes mediated by micro-organisms in river sediments.We have measured nitrification, denitrification and methanogenesis rates in a series of lab experiments using sediments from Isaac River catchment streams and found that salinity affects these processes in different ways and to different degrees. Process rates were shown to differ seasonally between samples taken from the same location and habitat type and also between different habitat types at the same time and location. Both aerobic and anaerobic process rates were higher in surface sediments and it is likely that this activity is associated with surface biofilms. Furthermore, we have shown that the ecosystem processes we have measured are limited by the availability of carbon in the sediments.The management implications of these findings for mine releases into ephemeral streams will be discussed.CITATION:Kerr, J L, Vink, S and Beyer-Robson, J, 2013. THE PROPERTY of the Lamaque Mining Company, Limited, ?is located in the Town of Bourlamaque, seventy miles east of Noranda, in Bourlamaque township, Abitrbi county, north western Quebec. Gold production commenced at Lamaque in April, 1935, with an initial mill capacity of 250 tons per day. The capacity was doubled in November of the same year, and in December, 1937, it further increased to 1,200 tons per day. During the war years the mill operated at a reduced tonnage, but in 1951 milling units were added along with complementary crushing and shop facilities to bring the capacity to 1,500 tons per day. Finally, in 1953, the capacity was raised to 2,000 tons per day, which rate is being maintained at the present time. The total production at Lamaque from April 2nd, 1935, to December 31st, 1956, has been 9,168,901 tons of ore from which 2,208,168 ounces of gold was recovered. The total value of this production , excluding E.G. M.À.*, was $77,869,653.

This circular outlines salient facts regarding the manganese-ore industry in the United States and the world. It is founded chiefly upon published information available in the literature of the subject. The Bureau of Mines has in its files additional, more detailed data upon many of the topics presented very briefly here, and will endeavor to assist the mineral industries and public by giving further information in response to individual inquiries. The Bureau will welcome comments, criticisms, and contributions of data that may assist in making later additions of this circular more accurate, or in developing more fully its mineral files pertaining to manganese. In reporting the production of manganese-bearing ores in the United States the following classification has been adopted by the Bureau of Mines: (1) Metallurgical-grade ores, under which have been classified manganese ores containing 35 percent or more of manganese used in the manufacture of iron and steel, ferruginous manganese ore containing 10 to 35 percent of manganese, manganiferous iron ore containing 5 to 10 percent of manganese, and manganiferous zinc residuum; (2) battery ore; (3) fluxing ores, under which are classified ores that may contain a few ounces of silver and are rich enough in manganese to make them valuable chiefly for fluxing purposes in nonferrous smelters; and (4) miscellaneous ores, under which are classified the ores shipped to brick manufacturers, glass makers, and manufacturers of manganese chemicals.

"The presence of zinc in cyanide solutions is generally thought to not have an adverse effect on precious metal recovery or recovery rate by heap leach processing. However, analytical interferences of zinc in solution can cause problems in accurately determining and controlling cyanide concentration in the leach solution, leading to increased cyanide consumption. Analytical methods and the chemistry of cyanide in the presence of zinc are reviewed. The effects of solution pH and zinc concentration on the free cyanide determination were evaluated in detail. Use of the standard silver nitrate titration and a modified titration method for controlling cyanide concentration during heap leaching were investigated experimentally. The practical implications of cyanide heap leaching in the presence of cyanide soluble zinc minerals are discussed.IntroductionThe presence of zinc in precious metal cyanidation circuits is not uncommon. Zinc can be introduced into cyanide leach solutions through dissolution of various zinc minerals1>, or through the use of a Merrill Crowe (zinc precipitation) circuit. Zinc minerals typically occur infrequently and in low concentration in gold ores, but are more abundant in silver ores. Merrill Crowe systems are most commonly employed for recovery of precious metals from solution for relatively high silver ores. It is desirable to control the amount of dissolved zinc in a cyanidation circuit for several reasons. Excessive zinc build-up in cyanide leach solution can, under certain circumstances, inhibit precious metal dissolution and adversely affect solution recovery systems. Additionally, high zinc concentrations can lead to excessive in-process cyanide inventories and potentially, to higher cyanide consumption"

This work aims at the selection of an appropriate eluant for cyanide recycling using ion exchange resins. Based on a literature review as well as on experimental results, the elution of resins loaded with copper and minor amounts of iron and nickel is discussed. The resins Imac HP 555s, Amberlite IRA 900 (Rohm&Hass) and Purolite A860S (Purolite Co) were eluted using either NaCI, zinc and nickel cyanides, hydrochloric acid, sulfuric acid or acid thiourea solutions. The results indicate that saline solutions are effective only with polyacrylic resins (Purolite A860S), failing to desorb the metals, specially the nickel cyanocomplex, loaded on polystyrene-based resins. Cyanide solutions of both zinc and nickel are capable of eluting over 90% of the loaded metals. In contact with pure acid' solutions, iron precipitates onto the resin beads, as Cu(II) ferrous cyanideCu2Fe(CN)6.xH20. Thiourea is able to elute all the three metal cyanocomplexes owing to the increased solubility of copper cyanocomplexes in the presence of this complexing agent. The results demonstrate that a universal eluant is not available and the selection of the most appropriate resin-elution procedure should be based on the specific features of the system under consideration

An empirical method of estimating dense rock (D.R.E.) equivalent volumes erupted as airfall tephra, described in a companion paper in this volume, is elaborated, and its accuracy discussed. Estimates obtained from a single eruption can be classified as to whether they show positive, negative, or constant relative dispersion. For positively dispersed tephras (estimated volumes increasing with distance), this procedure improves the accuracy of the method. The technique is applied to selected andesitic tephras erupted from Egmont Volcano, New Zealand, during the last 28 000 years, which are found to range in volume from about 1.5 x 107 m3 up to about 2.4 x 108 m3 D.R.E. With a factor of about 16 between the smallest and largest volumes, this contrasts sharply with the rhyolite volcanoes in New Zealand, where the difference factor is usually of the order of 100. The largest tephra eruptions at Egmont are small compared to the largest debris avalanches, which have exceeded 1010 m3 (10 km3) in volume.The magnitude versus frequency relationship, calculated using a maximum likelihood method, establishes the limits of eruption magnitude at Mt Egmont as 107 to 109 m3 D.R.E. For some volcanoes, the magnitude-frequency relationship changes with time, owing to clustering of eruptions, separated by long dormant intervals. Ngauruhoe Volcano, New Zealand, is an example. Within eruptive episodes, the mean interval between eruptions of >_ 105 m3 is about 0.9 ¦ 0.65 years. The mean interval between eruptive episodes in which >_ 106 m3 is erupted, including episodes in which this volume is erupted gradually, is about 25.8 ¦ 6.6 years, and the mean dormant interval between all episodes is about 5.2 ¦ 3.0 years. At present Ngauruhoe is in an unusually prolonged dormant period, 50% longer than any in the historical record, since 1839.

The Lime Creek* ore body in northwestern British Columbia is one of the few commercial primary stockwork-type molybdenite deposits in North America. Others include the Climax, Urad-Henderson, Questa, and Endako ore bodies. They are mined on a low grade-high tonnage basis, and are open pit operations except for Climax and Urad-Henderson. Much recent geochemical research on both porphyry copper and stockwork MoS2 deposits has been concerned with dating of micas related to the mineralization and associated igneous rocks. The results appear to show that mineralization and the predominant magmatic events of the deposit are indistinguishable in age (1-5), except where dating has been in sufficient detail to resolve the analytical overlap (6). At Lime Creek, geologic information shows that the Main granodiorite, the major intrusive and dominant host rock for MoS2 mineralization, was emplaced and had solidified sometime prior to the introduction of MoS2. The first MoS2 episode is intimately related to localized bodies of kalialaskite which clearly intrude the older stock. K-Ar dating was undertaken to clarify the age relations between Lime Creek plutonism and the apparently younger hydrothermal event that began with kalialaskite.

A crescente demanda por aços galvanizados com alta lubricidade tem impulsionado o desenvolvimento de pós-tratamentos que, aplicados sobre a superfície dos revestimentos, reduzem o atrito entre o ferramental e a chapa durante o processo de estampagem de peças críticas na indústria automotiva. Diante disso, a Usiminas desenvolveu, em parceria com a Quaker, a aplicação do pós-tratamento tipo microfosfato denominado Primecoat Z Auto, com a função de melhorar a estampabilidade de aços galvanizados a quente do tipo GI (Zn puro). Nesse estudo foi avaliada a Razão Limite de Estampagem (RLE) de um aço GI destinado a produção de peças críticas, após aplicação desse pós-tratamento em escala de laboratório. Adicionalmente, foram caracterizadas a morfologia e a constituição química do microfosfato, e o desempenho do aço quanto à fosfatização, à pintura automotiva e à resistência a corrosão. Concluiu-se que o filme de pós-tratamento é amorfo, constituído por Zn, P, Al e Mg, promovendo um excelente ganho de lubricidade ao aço GI, sem interferir nos processos subsequentes de fosfatização e de pintura nas montadoras. Além disso, o material apresentou excelente desempenho quanto à resistência à corrosão.

Molybdenum and nickel in black shale ore exists as amorphous sulfides which has highly active, and easily oxide to sulfuric acid and sulfate at low temperature in the presence of excess oxygen. Take advantage of the characteristic to leach molybdenum and nickel from black shale. Oxidation, conversion and dissolution behavior of amorphous colloidal molybdenum and nickel sulfide in pressure leaching process was studied. The effects of stirring speed, temperature, concentration of sulphuric acid, oxygen process and mineral granularity on molybdenum and nickel leaching were investigated. The results showed that dissolution rate increased with increasing temperature and stirring speed, but decreased with increasing concentration of sulphuric acid. And dissolution of molybdenum and nickel from ore only need oxygen without any other reagent.

Small manganese ore bodies in south Odisha, India occurs both as stratiform and stratabound ore bodies. These two ore bodies show contrasting mineralogical, petrographical and chemical characteristics. Stratiform type of Mn-ores consists of manganese, iron and silicate- phases in approximately same proportion. In contrast, stratabound ore bodies contain a high proportion of manganese oxides, silicates and phosphorus phases. Phosphorus is found within apatite in the stratabound ore bodies while in the stratiform ore it occurs as an adsorbed state with iron phase (goethite). Both ore bodies are low-grade (17-23% Mn) therefore do not have a market value. However, the stratabound ores are enriched in phosphorus (P2O5: >1%) compared to the stratiform ores. Both the ore types were processed through gravity, magnetic and roast reduction followed by magnetic separation techniques. The strata bound ore could be upgraded to 33% Mn from a feed of 23% by combination of dry and wet magnetic separation methods. But the phosphorus content also suits up (P2O5: 1.2%) in the processed product making it unsuitable for further use. The stratiform ores do not respond to either gravity or magnetic separation because of close association of manganese with iron phases. However, this could be beneficiated through roast reduction followed by magnetic separation. An ore with 17% Mn content could be upgraded to 40% Mn with a 42% yield and 78% recovery. The goethite, having phosphorus, converts to magnetite and is retained within the magnetic fraction, thereby reducing the concentration of phosphorus in the non-magnetic fraction, which becomes the product. This report demonstrates the influence of ore petrology in determining the up-gradational potential of manganese ore in the southern Odisha, India. The State Electricity Commission of Victoria is Australia's largest single coal producer. Approximately 19 Mt of coal will be produced in 1989 from the SEC V's newest mine, Loy Yang Open Cut (LYOC), which com- menced overburden stripping operation in October 1982. When the adja- cent Loy Yang Power Station is completed in the late 1990's, LYOC will supply between 35 to 45 Mt/a, depending on power station performance and demand of coal for non-power generation uses. LYOC has been a major challenge for the SECV. It is the biggest single open pit coal mining development undertaken in Australia, with a whole of life capital cost approaching A$1 billion. The mine has supplied a very rapidly growing demand for coal from the expanding power station while developing in breadth, length and depth. Coal demand has consistently been above the figures anticipated during the initial planning because of the substantially improved performance of the 500 MW units of the Loy Yang A Power Station. The superior performance of the LYOC and power station has generated additional electrical energy during the first 5 years of power station operation compared with the initial planning targets- at almost no additional capital cost. This has been a major benefit to the SECV. LYOC will continue to present major challenges for the SECV, particularly in achieving overburden removal and coal reserve targets as development of the open cut continues to full depth over the next 15 years.
