"The availability of fresh water to meet present and future needs in Ontario is of concern to an increasing number of people. Rain and snow are the source of our potable water and provide, on the average, some 180,-000 billion gallons of water annually. This amount is reduced to 94 billion gallons a day as a result of the evaporation and transpiration of water and our inability to construct the necessary reservoirs for capturing surplus stream flow.The water used for domestic, irrigation, public supply and industrial purposes amounts to some 7 billion gallons daily at present and will reach 21 billion gallons daily by the year 2000; however, only about one-fifth of the water used is actually consumed, and this, along with the possibilities of water re-use, improves the water supply picture still further.The need for adequate pollution control has accompanied industrial and urban expansion and is an important factor in the extent to which our surplus water is used. In the 10-year period since the formation of the Ontario Water Resources Commission, the cost of water and sewage works constructed in the Province has exceeded one billion dollars. A special effort is now being made to control the industrial pollution situation.Numerous federal and provincial agencies are engaged in hydrologie studies in the Province, providing in-formation of benefit to those involved with water resources management."

"The requisite for maintaining optimal carbon concentration levels in a carbon-in-leach (CIL) circuit is of paramount importance in the prevention of gold losses. The process’s ability to recover gold from the aqueous phase is primarily dependent on the carbon loading profile of the CIL train.Newmont Boddington Gold (NBG) have over 2015 tested the Mintek online carbon concentration wmeter (C2 Meter) suitability for effective carbon concentration measurements in their CIL circuit compared to the standard method where the readings are taken twice a shift by the operations staff. The C2 meter works by passing a 1MHz ultrasonic signal through a slurry containing carbon where there is a relationship between the carbon concentration and the attenuation of that signal.It also highlighted another area where the C2 meter could be implemented at NBG whereby the instrument can be as a cautionary device for carbon losses in place of carbon safety screens.Citation:McCamley, C, 2016. "Specimens of the ultra-low carbon bake hardening steel were soaked for 1 min to 5 min, and then cooled by water quenching. The internal friction experiments were carried out to detect the spectra of the specimens. Results show that Snoek peaks are present in all the specimens, however, an obvious Snoek-Koster peak is found only in the 5 min-annealed specimen. Besides, tensile results indicate that the bake hardening values increase with the annealing time prolonging from 1 min to 3 min, but decrease as the annealing time prolongs further to 5 min. The solute distributions in the specimens were characterized by three dimensional atom probe. Some segregated C and V are found in the 1 min-annealed specimen, and the C and V contents decrease as annealing time prolongs to 5 min.1. IntroductionAs an excellent member of automotive body panel materials, various types of bake hardening (BH) steels have been developed since 1980s. Bake hardening property, as one of the most important mechanical properties, has been studied by many researchers [ 1-5]. As is known, BH phenomenon is generally controlled by the interaction between solute C and dislocations. The Snoek peak of internal friction (IF) is very popular in the investigation of solute C [6-9]. However, result of internal friction cannot suggest the distribution pattern of solute C as well as its influence on BH phenomenon.Three dimensional atom probe (3DAP) can diagnose solute element atoms as well as nano-sized precipitates, and it is the only instrument that currently can identify the identities of individual atoms in a material and measure their spatial coordinates with the resolution close to 0.3 nm [10]. There have been a number of studies about using 3DAP to detect solute elements as well as nanometer sized precipitates [11-19]. For example, Hono et al. [16] used 3DAP to determine the solute elements in an age-hardened Mg-Ca-Zn alloy, and they also obtained the distribution patterns of the observed elements."

Although phosphorus is a very important biogenic element, its concentration in coal is generally low. Phosphorus concentrations typically range from 0.001 % to 0.229% in raw coals of the contiguous 48 states. Some Alaskan coals in the Cook Inlet region contain horizons unusually high in phosphorus. A foot by foot analysis of deep drill core, containing 70 ft. of sub bituminous 'C' coal from the Beluga coal field, Alaska, showed certain increments contained as high as 17.03% P2O5 in the coal ash; 1.01 % P on a moisture-free coal basis. Crandallite has been identified by electron microprobe analyses as a phosphorus numeral in these coals. The authors could quantify calcium, barium, strontium and phosphorus concentrations from the coal attributable to crandallite. These high phosphorus coals provided a unique opportunity to study the association of phosphorus in coals using chemical fractionation for exchangeable cations and acid extractable elements. Since the source of high phosphorous horizons in Cook Inlet coals is attributed to volcanic ash, it is suggested that the profiles of acid extractable phosphorous concentration may be useful for coal seam correlations.

Gob holes are routinely used by the mining industry to vent methane from gobs and to prevent it from entering the mine ventilation system. In some cases, flows from gob holes are measured by centering an anemometer on the end of a discharge pipe. These measurements are erroneous and tend to be high by as much as 30 pct. The Bureau of Mines deter- mined method factors (correction factors) for anemometer measurements taken in this manner. Method factors for 4-, 6-, and 8-in (10.2-, 15.2-, and 20.3-cm) ID pipe are 0.68, 0.71, and 0.78, respectively. Comparisons between horizontal and vertical flows indicated no significant change in method factors. Consequently, the method factors for horizontal pipe flows can be applied to vertical upward flows.

This paper mainly focuses on the method of ?three-zone? definition (a caving zone, a fissure zone and a curve subsidence zone) for full height cutting in a thick seam. Based on criteria of a caving zone and a water conducting zone, as well as existing research achievements, it is believed that there exists great error for calculation of height of the ?three-zone? area using cutting height and the coefficient of bulk increase. Dynamic factors should be considered, so, based on the theory of key rock strata and combining this with several other factors, such as mining area, this paper presents a new method to determine the overburden ?three-zone? definition. The results are as follows: (1) geometric models of a working face and key stratum are established through the rock displacement angle, with consideration of the influence of mining on the key stratum (the range of key stratum influenced by mining is enlarged as the mining area increases); (2) because there is always a cavity below the key stratum of the thick coal seam with full seam cutting, and the key stratum gradually fracture with face advancing, based on the geometric dimension of strata, the maximum fracturing interval expression has been presented, including the working face advancing range. This can theoretically lead to the location of the key stratum influenced by mining, and its stability before mining, helps to confirm which zone the key stratum and following-up strata belong to, using the criteria of sliding instability or deformation instability; (3) the new method of ?three-zone? definition which is based on the theory of key rock strata is first proposed for full height cutting in thick seam. Finally, combined with practical engineering, and comparing with field data, it is believed that the proposed method is more objective than existing methods.

Placer gold and platinum-group metals (PGM) In the Slate Creek area, northern Chistochina Mining District, are derived from silicified and carbonate-altered, Cretaceous-Tertiary (?) dikes and related mafic and ultramafic rocks. Gold In the placer deposits is also derived from Tertiary conglomerate and altered Jurassic-Cretaceous argilllte. The argilllte and Igneous bedrock sources show a unique Ag-Au-Cu-Hg-PGM association that Is attributed to a combination of magmatic, hydrothermal, and supergene processes. The bedrock and placer deposits contain a variety of gold silver-lead-copper and PGM alloys. The observed geochemical, mineralogic, and alteration features are consistent with current geological models for turbidite-hosted gold deposits. No economic gold or PGM lodes were Identified, but several areas warranting more detailed investigation were Identified. Conventional geochemical sampling and analysis of small sample splits weighing between 10 and 30 grams were shown to be unreliable as a consistent means of identifying gold- and PGM-bearing bedrock. Pan concentration of pulverized rock samples was shown to be a more effective, but still Imperfect means of Identifying gold and PGM source rocks. Geochemical data and mineralogic examination indicate that gold and PGM in potential lode sources are very finely and erratically disseminated, are chemically combined with other elements, and may not be entirely free-milling or amenable to simple gravity concentration.

THE Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting Company's underground mine at Flin Flon, Manitoba, has in the past been serviced by two working shafts-the North Main shaft, and the No. 3 shaft. The North Main shaft is used to hoist the total production from under-ground, and handles the greater part of the mine supplies and crews. The shaft is five-compartment design, rectangular in cross-section, and is equipped entirely with steel shaft sets from the surface to the finished depth of 2,210 feet. Hoisting equipment in the surface plant will not permit the North Main shaft to be extended below its present finished depth. The No. 3 shaft, located approximately 2,300 feet from the North Main shaft, is used primarily as a ventilation shaft, and for hoisting lower-level development waste to the 390 level, where this material is used as mine fill. The No. 3 shaft is of standard rectangular design, timbered with 8-in. by 8-in. creosoted fir sets, hung on 6-foot centres. From the surface to the 1,430 level, the No. 3 shaft consists of three 5 ft. by 5 ft. compartments, and below this level to the completed depth of 2,300 feet, the shaft is increased to four compartments. To service the mine and to expedite development below the 2,210 level, a one and one-half compartment winze was sunk from the 2,210 level to a depth of 766 feet, or approxima tel y the 3,000 level.

A furnace freeze lining is necessary for safety and economic reasons in several smelting operations. The integrity of the freeze lining is put at risk by furnace power imbalances. Although numerous models have been derived to model the growth and depletion of the freeze lining due to power imbalances, no model exists for thermomechanical damage to the freeze lining. This study provides an initial pathway for modelling thermomechanical damage to the freeze lining in an ilmenite smelting furnace using information from the literature and experimental work. A methodology under the framework of continuum damage mechanics is proposed to model mechanical damage to the freeze lining due to phase changes, thermophysical changes, and constrained thermal expansion. Drill cores of solidified slag ingots were used to represent the freeze lining. The modified power law proved to be the best predictor of the softening response of the drill cores. Damage driving parameters were extracted from the raw data, and governing equations of the parameters with respect to temperature were derived for use in a finite element method (FEM) code.

As fibras naturais extraídas das folhas do curauá estão entre as mais fortes fibras naturais utilizadas como reforço de compósitos poliméricos para aplicações em engenharia. Tais compósitos, até agora, são limitados em relação às propriedades mecânicas e energia de impacto. Assim o objetivo do presente trabalho é de investigar a possibilidade da melhora da resistência à tração bem como a energia de impacto dos compósitos de matriz poliéster reforçados com fibras de curauá com variados parâmetros de processamento. Os parâmetros observados foram a quantidade de fibras com diâmetro fino e pressão aplicada durante o processamento. Utilizando 60% de fração volumétrica de fibras finas (diâmetro médio variando de 50 à 80 µm) contínuas e alinhadas foi possível se obter resistência à tração superior 200 MPa. Ainda, aplicando-se 30 MPa de pressão durante a cura foram obtidos mais de 270 MPa de resistência a tração. Já para resistência a impacto Izod, uma resistência de 340 J/m foi obtido pelos corpos de prova com entalhe feito em sentido perpendicular ao alinhamento das fibras.

Gontermann-Peipers GmbH (GP) Germany developed a new, high alloyed steel grade for the manufacturing of back-up rolls. The advanced GP double pour casting processes provide highest flexibility in being quite open in rolls work layer chemistry and hence microstructure with no influence on core respectively neck properties. GP took the process advantage to provide a brand new back-up roll grade with remarkably reduced roll wear while operating with textured work rolls. In the meantime several successful trials have been made with this new roll grade on different Skin Pass Mills. As a result the performance of back-up roll and thus availability of mill will be improved while specific costs for mill will drop. This quite new back-up roll grade has recently been launched. As next step increasing the field of applications is under progress.

The Ernest Henry Mining (EHM) underground mine is situated adjacent to the Great Artesian Basin in North Queensland and within a fracture zone. Underground development commenced in February 2008 and has extended to approximately 1000 vertical metres below the surface.Groundwater has been encountered in numerous locations throughout the mine, predominantly on the eastern side of the orebody and often related to fault structures. Most of the groundwater encountered has been managed with conventional pumping systems; however, on occasions large water inflows have been encountered, which have had a significant impact on the planned development of the mine. Some of the intersections encountered had the potential to compromise the mine from a combination of high temperature (over 45°C), high pressure (3500 kPa) and high flows (50–100 L/s).This paper describes three case studies where significant water inflows were encountered and then controlled by the injection of cementitious grout into the rock mass. The case studies are the 1650 mid-shaft heading, the 1325 shaft access decline and the 1625 to 1475 fresh air rise (FAR) raise bore. Each case study includes a brief description of the event that occurred and the grouting equipment and techniques developed to enable mining to continue.The paper also describes the development of a hydrogeological map of the mine, the probe-hole regime used for high-risk headings and the required processes and systems to inject both cementitious grouts and polyurethane resin into the rock mass.CITATION:Purvis, T, Calverd, J and Greve, A-K, 2014. "Quartz Hill is a large, low- to moderate-grade quartz vein stockwork porphyry molybdenum deposit, discovered in 1974 during a regional stream sediment geochemical reconnaissance survey of southeast Alaska conducted by United States Borax and Chemical Corporation. Mineralization is localized in the upper parts of an Upper Oligocene (30 Ma) composite quartz monzonite stock which is emplaced discordantly into older Cretaceous to Early Tertiary terrain of the Coast Range igneous metamorphic complex of the northwest North American Cordillera. Subsequent fault-controlled, complex multi-stage intrusion, concentrated in the core of the Quartz Hill stock, produced successive pulses of hydrothermal alteration and molybdenum mineralization at about 27 Ma. Overall, the deposit is tabular and flat-lying and well suited to open pit mining. The 0.05% MoS2 grade limit covers an area of approximately 1500 m by 2750 m and extends to a maximum depth of 520 m below surface. Details of grade distribution show two separate lobes of higher grade material within the larger low-grade deposit.A ten year program of exploration drilling, underground development, sampling and metallurgical testwork led to a 1983 feasibility study based on a resource of 1600 million tonnes grading 0.127% MoS2 at a 0.08% MoS2 cutoff The large size of the deposit and its homogeneous grade distribution, typically showing gradual outward decrease of grade, makes in pit grade selection practical at several cutoff levels. Cominco Ltd. now reports a Probable Resource of 210 million tonnes averaging 0.22% MoS2 with a further Possible Resource of 1100 million tonnes averaging 0.12% MoS:z. At low molybdenum metal prices which have persisted for 10 years since the molybdenum price spike of the late 1970s and early 1980s, the Quartz Hill deposit is sub-economic."

In 2010, the foreseen increase of copper grade in feed concentrate at the Horne Smelter was a significant challenge to maintain a steady copper flow throughout the process. The Horne Smelter process includes a Noranda Reactor, a Noranda Converter, pyro refining vessels and anode furnaces. Of the many challenges involved, improving the single casting wheel performance was one of the key topics. Its reliability had to be improved to meet the new production objectives, as anode copper production was to increase from 170 000 to 225 000 tonnes/year. A multidisciplinary team was dedicated to improve the casting wheel availability. The improvement project allowed pinpointing failure modes and reviewing operational and maintenance practices. The common understanding developed by the team allowed improving small components with a high gain-to-effort ratio. The project allowed reaching operational targets without any significant investment. INTRODUCTION In operation since 1927, the Horne Smelter, located in Rouyn-Noranda, in Quebec, has undergone several technological changes since its original construction. Built to smelt the Horne mine concentrates, the smelter also accepted some local custom feeds from the first years of operation. When the Horne mines stopped production in 1976, the plant became a 100% custom smelter. With the development of the Noranda Reactor (1973) and Noranda Converter (1997), the Horne smelter increased its productivity and improved its environmental performance. Continuous improvement of the Horne process allowed maintaining a high level of flexibility in the operation of the smelter, while improving its overall capacity.

Na etapa de flotação de minérios finos de ferro, usa-se como agente depressor o gritz de amido de milho. Tal produto orgânico para ser usado como reagente precisa ser gelatinizado para permitir que os grânulos do amido tenham capacidade de absorver água quando molhados ou expostos à umidade. Este processo pode ocorrer por efeito térmico através de água aquecida ou por um ativador térmico como soda cáustica, sendo o último usado na planta Casa de Pedra. Visando aperfeiçoar a preparação/gelatinização do amido de milho buscaram-se auxiliares químicos para reduzir a presença de grumos suspensos (amidos não gelatinizados), aumentar a eficiência da ação depressora e garantir maiores ganhos de recuperação metalúrgica do metal de interesse. O trabalho contemplou estudos com um agente auxiliar denominado SOFTEX 2011 da empresa TENSAC. Os testes foram feitos em escala de bancada com substituição da massa total de água usada na 1ª gelatinização do gritz de milho (solução com 10% de sólidos) pelo reagente SOFTEX 2011 nas proporções de 1,0; 1,5; 2,0; 2,5; 3,0; 3,5 e 4,0%. Os primeiros resultados demonstraram ganhos significativos em recuperação metalúrgica e uma melhor seletividade das espécies minerais. Fisicamente, observou-se boa transparência nas suspensões do gritz de amido de milho gelatinizado através de um aspecto como gel.

A series of tests were performed to determine the flammability limits of mixtures of oxygen, ammonia, steam and nitrogen, over a solution, in a sealed autoclave. The partial pressures of ammonia and oxygen in the vapour space were varied by adjusting the character of the solution and by adjusting the oxygen concentration in the oxidant gas respectively. The data shows that flammable conditions can be minimized by controlling the operating temperature, reducing the ammonia content in the solution, increasing the concentrations of Ni, Cu and Zn in solution and keeping the % oxygen in the gas phase less than 15.5. Observations were also made that suggest that the presence of an aerosol in the vapour space may hinder ignition.
