The sulfation rates of magnesium oxide and calcium oxide (molar ratio 7:3) contained in calcined CMA ( calcium magnesium acetate) by SO2 were measured. The experiments were carried out in the temperature range 700 to 1100 °C and under the SO2 concentrations of 0.3 to I mol % (5 % 02). In the low-temperature range below 830 °C the reaction produced CaSO4.3MgSO4 and unreacted MgO, but no MgSO4 phase. The formation of CaSO4.3MgSO4 phase has a significant implication in that it allows the utilization of MgO for SO2 removal whereas the sulfation of MgO from conventional sources is so slow that it is of no practical interest. Thus, the calcined CMA can remove SO2 at lower temperatures than conventional SO2 absorbents and at a greater capacity. Above 950 °C only CaO reacts with SO2, but at a much greater rate than the calcined Ca(OH)2, which is one of the most reactive SO2 absorbents.

The Shasta and California Iron-ore deposits are 14 miles northeast of Redding, Shasta County, Calif.; and since 1907 have produced more than 300,000 short tons of exceptionally pure iron ore. Although some ore was mined and smelted from 1907 through the First. World War, most of it has been produced from 1942 through 1945 for use in making heavy ship ballast and concrete anchorages for mines. Irregular masses of magnetite, ranging from lumps of a few tons to pods containing about 25,000 tons, occur associated with skarn near the contact between the McCloud limestone and a younger granitic intrusive. Some of the deposits are low-grade, whereas others are nearly pure magnetite. Selective mining and hand sorting are necessary to produce a high-grade product. Investigation of these deposits by the Bureau of Mines included 2,910 feet of diamond drilling, some surface sampling of the principal mineralized zone and beneficiation tests. Resulting factual data are given in the body of this report.

SILICA is the main impurity in iron ore. It is intimately associated with the iron oxide, sometimes free but more often in the combined state, as a mineral silicate. Its separation and purification sometimes present difficult problems to the analyst. In the absence of any definite knowledge to the contrary, orthosilicic acid. H4SiO4, is supposed to be the only silicic acid made, all other forms, such as metasilicic acid, H2SiO3, representing different degrees of its dehydration. These acids are exceedingly weak but form the most stable compounds found in nature. They are known as the silicate minerals and are formed by the combination of the different metallic oxides

Handling of municipal solid waste (MSW) and control of its potential resources is becoming increasingly important in modern society. The OECD (Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development) average on municipal waste produced in 2003 was that of around 570 kg per inhabitant. In European Union countries around half amount is of MSW landfilled. In Finland still 88% of MSW was landfilled in 2004. Since incineration reduces MSW volume significantly while producing heat energy, it has become one of the most common waste handling techniques. The shortcoming of incineration is however, that incinerated MSW is often not pre-sorted and it produces slags and ashes as side streams from which recovery of metals is difficult. This paper looks into possibilities of scrap metal recovery for recycling from municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI) bottom ash. In order to do that, a flow sheet of physical separation methods was developed and tested with Finnish rotary furnace MSWI bottom ash. In addition, an empirical model for estimation of the recoveries of scrap metals with physical separation methods for treatment of MSWI bottom ash was developed. According to the results of this study, for 1 Mt of incinerated MSW with 30% mass reduction, a minimum resource potential of 100 kt for magnetic metal scrap of roughly 24 % grade and about 19 kt of non-magnetic metal scrap of roughly 65 % grade. In other words, 57 kg magnetic scrap and 12 kg non-magnetic scrap per inhabitant at the mentioned grades, respectively. Although wide variations of parameters affect the MSWI bottom ash quality, it can be said that a considerable amount of metals is drained into MSWI bottom ash. Results of this study show that from MSWI bottom ash significant material streams metal scrap can be reintroduced into the resource cycle which would otherwise be lost.

Coal is the prime source of energy in India. It now contributes to about 55% of the total power generation and will continue to have its major share in the energy mix of the country in the foreseeable future. Thermal coals of India, known for their wide variations in nature and categorized as difficult to wash due to their typical mineral matter association with the organic matrix, need suitable beneficiation technique for quality upgrade for improving the overall economics, efficiency and pollution free power generation. A non-coking high-ash coal, collected from Vasundhara open cast mine of the Ib Valley Coalfield, Orissa, has been characterized along with its different fractions obtained in the process of beneficiation for distribution of minerals using FTIR, XRD and ash analysis. The raw coal was fractionated by size as well as by density. It has been observed that ash yields and mineralogical composition (found to be mainly kaolinite and quartz) have no appreciable change in different size fractions, indicating homogeneous distribution of minerals in the coal matrix. However, for the different density fractions the mineral composition and ash yield have significant variations. The quartz content of the beneficiated coal visualized with 34% ash yield, as mandated by the Ministry of Environment and Forest (MOEF) for the use of coal in power plants is reduced to half of that of the raw coal. As quartz is the most abrasive mineral in coal, reduction of its proportion obviously signifies considerable reduction of wear of power plant machinery when beneficiated coal is fed to utility boiler for generation of power. IN a recent technical paper of the Central Committee of the French Coal Mines (Note technique No. 198, by L. Lahoussay) the author points out that continuous in¬crease in depth of mine shafts makes it more and more necessary to look for appropriate means to reduce the weights and dimensions of the hoisting ropes. Increasing depth demands a larger section and weight for the cable if the useful load is not to be cut down at the same time. This naturally leads to increased cost per ton, and at the same time creates serious mechanical difficulties. The dimensions of the hoisting engine must be increased, acceleration at the start must be decreased so as to avoid periods of excessive peak power loads, and a longer time be allowed to slow down the speed of the hoist when applying brakes. The hoisting rope, upon which depend the dimensions and hence the mass of the hoisting engine, presents the greatest obstacle to the development of hoisting from greater depths. Evidently, for a given depth, the total weight of the rope can be notably reduced by utilizing a wire rope of decreasing section, approaching the theoretical logarithmic form. This is a solution frequently adopted for great depths. Of course, the weight of the rope could be easily' diminished by reducing the useful load, but it is certain that with increasing depth of mining, more effort must be made to confine the hoisting to a small number of shafts, and increase the load hoisted per trip.

A Fortran IV computer program entitled WAVE, which employs an explicit finite difference scheme for solving the one-dimensional wave equation for a time-dependent inelastic rock has been developed. The viscoelastic properties of the rock are represented in terms of a generalized Voigt model. The theory on which the computer program is based is rederived and a short description of the program is given. The computer program input instructions, a listing of the computer program, and example problems with required input and subsequent printed output are presented in appendixes. In the example problems) calculated results are free of spurious oscillations which occur in certain other methods of numerical calculation) notably the extended Ritz method.

"Fluid inclusion studies from the Cinola deposit indicate low salinities and low C01 contents of the ore fluid. This supports a suggestion that the mineralizing fluids originated from pore water in the fluviatile host rock (mid-Miocene Skonun Formation). Bimodal distribution of filling temperatures suggests the existence of at least two temperature regimes centred on 160°C and 270°C during mineral deposition. Independent age and stratigraphic evidence indicates that depth of mineralization is between 1.1 and 1. 8 km, corresponding to a hydrostatic load of between 110 and 170 bars.RESUMELes donnees sur les inclusions fluides du gisement Cinola indiquent de basses salinites et basses teneurs en C01 . Increasing use of Birmingham and other roof trusses prompted a Bureau of Mines study of support forces produced on a mine roof by these members. Equations, obtained from laboratory and field tests, are given for calculating the contact forces between the roof strata and a typical truss. Actual contact forces for a specific truss are difficult to estimate because of variable friction loss at the contact points. A finite-element analysis, using typical contact forces, indicated that trusses have a negligible effect on the stress field in massive, competent roof strata. The effectiveness of trusses in supporting broken rock strata was not analyzed. However, experience has shown that trusses are effective in supporting incompetent roof.

Impinger dust-counting methods are used by industrial hygienists for determining the number concentration of unhygienic siliceous dusts in industrial atmospheres. Various statements have been made regarding the size of the smallest particles revealed by the microscopic employed in such determinations. Published data on the subject are quite limited. This report presents information on the size of the smallest particles revealed by light-field and dark-field techniques applied to impinger and electric precipitator samples collected from experimentally established aerosols of silica dust and bituminous-coal dust. Size distribution and number concentration of particles of the various sizes in the aerosols were determined from samples collected by thermal precipitation simultaneously with the impinger and electric precipitator samples. The size of the smallest silica and bituminous-coal dust particles determined in the light-field counting method used was about 1./1, . There was relatively little variation in the values from 8 impinger and 33 A.-C. precipitator samples of silica dust and 13 impinger and 13 A.-C. precipitator samples of coal dust. The coefficients of variation of the values from the four sets of determinations were low, ranging from ± 7.7 to t 10 percent. This size of 1,14 is close to the limit of resolution of the microscopic method used and to various previously suggested values. The size of the particles determined in the dark-field counting method used was smaller than the size (about 0.28A ) of the smallest particles determined in the light-field, oil-immersion method used for the thermal precipitator samples.

The High Density Sludge Process was originally developed by Bethlehem Steel Corporation for use on acid mine drainage and diluted waste pickle liquor discharges requiring continuous chemical treatment systems. This work began in the early 1970s and was first put into practical use around 1973. To date there are approximately 15 operating systems which have been installed on mine drainage in the United States, and another 10 systems worldwide. Dense Sludge is an innovative and improved method for treating acidic metal bearing streams in a manner which minimizes the volumetric generation of sludge for disposal. The technology utilizes a sludge recycle process which forms particles that have a low affinity for water, unlike conventional metal hydroxide solids which contain tightly bound interstitial waters. Typical acid mine drainage streams contain high sulfate concentrations which combine with calcium ions in lime based treatment systems to form gypsum crystals. The physical form of this gypsum is radically altered when the Dense Sludge process is utilized compared to the form generated in conventional lime treatment systems. The characteristics of the metals particles are also changed in this process, as the metal hydroxides are converted to metal oxides. Slides No. 1 and No.2 show scanning electron micrographs of conventional and densified sludges illustrating these differences. The magnification used was 300X. The dense sludge particles settle faster, dewater more readily, are more easily pumped, and hold much less water than conventional precipitates. In some cases, because the metal content of the sludge is more concentrated, it can be economically recovered.
