Several research projects have been conducted in the western United States to determine the optimum soil replacement thickness for reconstruction of rangeland and cropland. However, the information gained from these studies tends to be site-specific and not broadly applicable. Moreover, the possible interaction between soil thickness and mechanical and fertilizer manipulation of the overburden has not been adequately studied. To meet these information needs, research was initiated at Trapper Mine in northwestern Colorado in 1980 to study vegetation response to soil thicknesses of 15,30,45, and 60 cm and five manipulations that included disking, ripping, and fertilizing. All crops were harvested at peak standing crop and then weighed in the laboratory. Wheat grain yields were highest when soil thickness was 45 cm and the soil and overburden were ripped. Alfalfa yields appeared to be highest when overburden was disked and fertilized and soil was replaced to a thickness of 60 cm. For range vegetation, standing crop biomass was highest when overburden was ripped and soil was replaced to 60 cm thick. However, optimum performance was obtained from the maximum number of species and life forms by disking overburden and replacing 15 cm of soil. The performance of most range plant species has improved over the three years of the study. When the results of this study are compared to the results of other soil thickness studies, we can conclude that selection of management practices should be influenced by local climate, local soil and overburden conditions, type of crop or vegetation to be grown, and specific management goals for that crop or vegetation.

"Dipalmitoyl glycerophosphorylcholine (lecithin) dispersed in physiologic saline, a model of the primary component of pulmonary surfactant, is adsorbed by respirable quartz and aluminosilicate dusts. Dust cytotoxicity as measured by erythrocyte bemolysis and pulmonary macrophage enzyme release is suppressed by this adsorption. The degree of suppression of hemolytic potential versus specific adsorption of lecithin from dispersion in saline by respirable quartz and kaolin dusts are compared with dusts' BET specific surface areas to interpret the prophylactic effect of lecithin adsorption. Dust hemolytic potential versus medium pH is presented. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and photo-acoustic spectroscopy of lecithin on quartz and of lecithin on kaolin are presented and reviewed with results of studies of the time course of removal of lecithin adsorbed on mineral surfaces by digestion by phospholipase enzyme. Results are discussed in terms of a model of prompt neutralization of respired mineral dusts by pulmonary surfactant, and a gradual re-toxification by digestive processes acting on the adsorbed prophylactic surfactant coating following phagocytosis. INTRODUCTIONQuartz dust of respirable size is well known to cause fibrotic lung disease, but numerous questions persist in the understanding of the initiation and progression of this disease. Our approach concentrates on physical and chemical aspects of mineral dusts early-on in their interactions with living organisms, and we have chosen simplified models to investigate that interaction.In the alveolar ·spaces of the lung, tissue is coated with a surface-active material (pulmonary surfactant), which, among other functions, mechanically stabilizes the lung from collapse by reducing the surface tension of water in the alveolar sacs.1 This surfactant is also the material that is first contacted by a mineral particle that is transported to an alveolus and is impacted there. This surfactant material has been studied extensively. The primary components are known to be proteins (about 11 % in dog lavage fluid), and phospholipids (about 88%).2 Pbosphatidyl cholines constitute roughly 80% of the phospholipid fraction; about 70% of the phosphatidyl choline fraction is dipalmitoyl lecithin (DPL).2 Respirable aluminosilicate particles are capable of adsorbing dipalmitoyl lecithin from dispersion in physiologic saline, a model for a possible initial event occurring upon deposition of a particle in a pulmonary alveolus. As may be seen from Figure 1, the DPL molecule has several fixed charges at neutral pH; a positive charge on the trimethylamine (choline) moiety, and a negative charge on the phosphate group. Also evident are the two fatty acid residues of palmitic acid, which are bonded through ester likages to the glycerol segment of the molecule. The fatty acid moieties of phosphatidyl choline make the molecule inso1uble in aqueous solutions under normal conditions, but a colloidal unit of aggregated molecules called a micelle is usually formed spontaneously above a certain minimum concentration. Small micellar vesicles are generally formed in the laboratory by using ultrasonic agitation or by solvent evaporation methods."

The South Asian countries of India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Ceylon, Nepal, Bhutan, and Sikkim arc to varying-degrees just beginning to achieve significant economic and industrial development. These countries are richly endowed with certain mineral resources, and development of these resources is being accelerated. In 1965, the mineral industry remained a relatively small sector of the region's economy, accounting for only about 1 percent of its estimated gross national product of $62,528 million. Nevertheless, the estimated $630 million total value of minerals produced in South Asia during 1965 represented an increase of nearly 15 percent t over that of 1964. India continued as the dominant mineral producer of the region, accounting for 85 percent of the total value of all minerals produced ill 1965. India increased its output of iron ore, manganese, mica, coal, and petroleum. Pakistan accounted for 13 percent of the value of the region's output and recorded increased output of iron ore, chromite, coal, natural gas, and most other minerals. The small mineral industry of Ceylon attained remarkable growth in the production of ilmenite, graphite, and gem stones. The mineral industry of Afghanistan remained relatively insignificant, although development of large known resources of natural gas was continued, Nepal, Bhutan, and Sikkim produced no commercially significant quantities of minerals in 1965.

"Agnico Eagle LaRonde produces over 300,000 ounces of gold annually, along with silver, zinc and copper by-products. The LaRonde plant consists of a conventional SAG and Ball mill circuit, followed by flotation. Load management is imperative for maintaining stability in grind size and ensuring consistency of the flotation feed. In flotation, the mass pull profiles of the cells and reagent dosage rates need to be managed to maximize recovery, while maintaining product quality. This is achieved by controlling the air, level and reagent addition set-points across the circuit. However, disturbances such as feed size distribution, ore hardness and mineralogy make it challenging to maintain efficient control using traditional control techniques. LaRonde therefore worked to develop a progressive control strategy, targeting stability and optimization. This started with a year-long instrumentation upgrade campaign, focusing on optimizing the performance and reliability of plant-wide instrumentation. The process was then optimized, leveraging AwaRE advanced controllers running in closed loop with PARC modules embedded within the PLC. The installation of 8 PFC cameras in flotation changed the flotation operation from a level and air control based strategy, to one that controls mass pull. This new control philosophy has allowed the plant to effectively manage mill load, improving grind size and providing increased throughput with better flotation performance.INTRODUCTION Background Since 2015, Agnico Eagle LaRonde has been conducting an optimization campaign to maximise the performance of plant assets leveraging instrumentation and control. The grinding and copper flotation circuits were identified as the areas having the greatest opportunities and value proposition for advanced control. A disciplined approach was followed to design and implement a progressive control solution to achieve operational excellence."

This report is a brief discussion of the impurity levels both in primary aluminum and super-purily alnminim in connection with raw materials and proc-essing methods. Particularly, truce amounls of im-purities were analyzed by introducing nittss-speclro-gruphy and nenlron-aclivalian analysis techniques. Vanadium and gallium content in primary aluminum metal corresponded to theor amounls in anode coke. but the nickel content in primary aluminum was hide-pendent oj its amount in the anode cake. Sulfur in the anode colic might result in an increase of the iron content in the molten metal in the reduction cell. The content of sodium and calcium increased with increasing bath ratio. In the holding furnacc sodium content decreased rapidly, and nonmetallic inclusions merit separated front the mollen metal. Three-layer elctrolysis was effectire in eliminating many impuri-ties with the exception of copper, aluminum oxide. aluminum nitride, and some rare-earth elements. THE amount of impurities and nonmetallic inclusions in aluminum metal depends on impurities in the raw materials and various production processes. This paper presents an investigation of the behavior of impurities and nonmetallic inclusions in aluminum during the electrolysis process, the period in the holding furnace, and the process of three-layer electrolysis. Chemical analysis and emission spectrometric analysis have generally been used as methods to determine small amounts of impurities in both primary aluminum and super-purity aluminum; however. mass spectrography and neutron-activation analysis have been recently introduced into this field, and trace amounts of impurities can accurately be determined by these latter methods. EXPERIMENTAL WORK Common impurities were determined by means of absorptiometric. polarographic, flame-photometric. and emission-spectrometric methods. However, in the determination of trace amounts of impurities and non-metallic inclusions, the following methods were applied. In the analyses of trace impurities by mass-spec- trographic analysis, samples were exposed in the vacuum spark of double-focus ing Mattauch-Herzog type mass spectrograph (Japan Electron Optics Laboratory, Ltd.). Ilford Q2 photographic plates were used as ion detectors. Fe was used as the internal standard, and the atomic concentration of each element was calculated by the following expression and converted into the weight concentration: where E, and Ei are the exposures (coulomb) when isotopes of the internal standard and impurity elements (on which the estimate is based) show the same density, X is the percent (atomic) concentration of the standard, IF and Ii are the percent abundances of the isotopes of the standard the impurity elements (on which the estimate is based), and Ms and hfi are the mass of the isotopes of the standard and impurity elements (on which the estimate is based). The coefficient of variation in this method is about 40 pct in the range of 0.1 to 1 ppm. In neutron-activation analysis, irradiations were done in the nuclear reactors TRIGA-I1 (neutron flux: 4.7 x 10 11 n per sq cm per sec; Rikkyo University) or JRR-2 (neutron flux: 2 x 1013 n per sq cm per sec: Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute). After the chemical separation, a NaI (3 by 3 in.) scintillator connected to a 256-channel y-ray spectrometer (R.C.L.) was used for counting and recording various activated impurities. The coefficient of variation in this method is about 20 pct. In the analyses of nonmetallic inclusions, aluminum-oxide determination was carried out according to Fischer's method, 3 as follows. A slice of sample was cut off and the surface was cleaned. It was dissolved in bromine-methanol. The solution was filtered and the residue was washed. The residue was fused with potassium bisulfate flux. Then it was dissolved in weak acid, and oxine solution was added. The aluminum oxinate was extracted with benzene. Finally, aluminum was determined absorptio-metrically. Aluminum nitride determination was carried out as follows. A slice of sample was cut off and the surface was cleaned. It was put in the distillation apparatus and decomposed with sodium hydroxide solution. The solution was distilled. Then ammonia was absorbed and

The possibilities for treating rinse waters fiom chromating bath by electrodialysis are discussed together with the possibilities of optimizing the treatment process for waste reduction and reuse of water and chemical products. An industrial effluent with 4600 ppm of Cr(VI), besides other metallic contamination, was used as work solution. This solution has been recirculated on an electrodialysis cell of three compartments, using exchange membranes Selemiom AMT and CMT. A migration of dichromate ions into the anodic compartment was obtained, so that an extraction of circa 99.9 % of Cr(VI) present on the solution was observed, resulting in water with a Cr(V[) concentration of 4 rnd. These results show that electrodialysis can be used to treat these effluents, and this water could be reused as rinse water. The solution of the anodic compartment, consisting at the beginning of the experiment of H2S04, 0.1 N, reached 7200 mg/l of Cr(VI). This concentrate could be reused on the chromating bath itself.

Ozone has been proposed to pretreat refractory ores before the cyanidation process for precious metals extraction. As pyrargyrite is one of the silver species most common in Mexican refractory ores, the ozonization of this silver sulfide was studied. The effect of pH and ozone concentration on silver dissolution was evaluated by means of a factorial experimental design. Two levels of sulfuric acid concentration and ozone in gas concentration were evaluated: 0.18 and 0.72 mol/L of acid and 0.054 and 0.077 gO3/L, respectively. The highest silver dissolution was obtained when using the higher acid and ozone concentration.

Analyses of samples of crude oil from fields in West Texas have been published from time to time in Bureau of Mines reports.3/ Analyses of 100 samples of crude oil from West Texas) collected during 1946 to 1952) are presented in this report. The production of crude oil from the fields in this portion of Texas totaled 381,129,000 barrels4/ during 1951 - an amount greater than that of any previous year. Total cumulative production of this area through 1951 was 2,792,692,000 barrels.5/ Table 1 gives monthly production figures for 1951 and yearly totals for the preceding 10 years (1942-1951) [ ]

O tratamento de oxidação térmica da liga Ti-6Al-4V foi realizado ao ar a 600 °C durante 2h, 5h e 10 h. O comportamento à fadiga foi analisado e comparado com aquele da liga não tratada. Foi feita caracterização através de análise por microscopia ótica e eletrônica, difração de raios-x e medição da rugosidade. Os resultados do DRX demonstraram crescimento dos picos de rutilo. Verificou-se um aumento na espessura média da camada formada de 0,12 μm para 1,09 μm ao elevar a duração do tratamento de 2 para 10 h. Os resultados apontaram redução de resistência a fadiga de 35 % para amostras oxidadas durante 2 h, 27 % para amostras oxidadas por 5 h e 29 % para as amostras tratadas durante 10 h, em relação ao ensaio com corpos de prova não submetidos ao tratamento. O efeito prejudicial causado pela camada formada após oxidação de 2 h foi tão danoso quanto o causado pela camada formada após 10 h, apesar da diferença entre as espessuras das camadas. A morfologia encontrada nas amostras fraturadas indicou fragilização na superfície das amostras oxidadas, contribuindo para a nucleação de trincas iniciais nos primeiros ciclos de fadiga na camada que favoreceram a propagação de fadiga, independendo da espessura de camada.

The tank house of Tamano refinery, that started its operation in January, 1972, was constructed incorporating the application of Periodic Reverse Current (P.R.C.) from the outset of design works. In 1973, the production of electrolytic copper came up to 8,000 mtpm, a sharp increase ds compared with the designed capacity of 7,000 mtpm, and successful operation has been achieved up to the present. P.R.C. has been employed for the purpose of raising productivity level and reducing copper inventories. Since there were various problems in P.R.C. application to such a large sized cathode as 1 m x 1 m, special attentions were paid to the following items: -Development of a unique bus bar to make an electrolytic current to each electrode as uniform as possible. -Improvement of circulating method of electrolyte. -Application of high-performance equipment to realize a uniform spacing between anode and cathode. Owing to these creative technical developments mentioned above, technical level for operation up to 350 amp per sq m of cathode current density has been established. The quality of electrolytic copper, which was a matter of interest, has been proved to be as excellent as those of conventional electrolysis products through a long term supply to the field of SCR and Dip forming where high levels in quality are required.

Pilot plant test work in 1942 and 1943 showed that by a combination of desliming, fine-size classification, and Sullivan deck concentration it is possible to recover heavy minerals such as cassiterite at least as fine as 10 microns in size. Introduction Air conditioning is a term which has come into common use only during our generation. By definition, it means the positive and accurate control of temperature, humidity, movement, purity, and component constituents of the atmosphere within an enclosure. Claiming such results for Noranda's ventilation system, or for that of any other large mine, at present would be an idle boast. However, we are working toward that end with considerable success. Modern underground ventilation at Noranda dates back about six years. The later development of air conditioning is in its fourth season, but still in the experimental stage. Various ingenious methods have been devised to cool mines which, because of climatic or geological conditions or depth, are excessively warm. A few installations have been made to warm intake air during the winter months where this is necessary. However, the method currently in use at Noranda is unique in that it accomplishes both ends by one process. This method utilizes the freezing and melting of ice to equalize year-round temperatures. Mining Methods While a discussion of mining methods at Noranda is not proposed in this paper, a brief summary may be in order. The Horne mine of Noranda Mines, Limited, has been developed by six shafts, four of which are now active. The most recent, an internal shaft, extends to 6,000 feet below surface, but all of the ore mined to date has come from above the 3,000-foot level. Figure 1 shows a model of principal ore bodies. The area mined is relatively small in plan, considering its vertical extent and the tonnage per vertical foot. Most of the ore lies within an ellipse about 600 by 1,000 feet. While this has certain advantages, the mining of such massive orebodies has presented many problems.

Une nouvelle méthodologie de calcul simplifiée et facile à utiliser dans la pratique minière est présentée. Cette méthodologie permet de remplacer les différentes expressions analytiques en usage par les deux facteurs de dilution seulement : un «facteur de dilution planifiée» lié à la sélectivité d’abattage au niveau de la planification minière et un «facteur de dilution additionnelle » permettant de juger de l’efficacité du contrôle de terrain et de la dilution pendant l’exploitation souterraine. L’application de cette méthodologie donnerait un outil nécessaire aux niveaux de la planification, du suivi des travaux d’exploitation et d’éventuelles études comparatives des coûts entre les différentes situations minières.ABSTRACTThe principal sources of dilution during underground evaluation and mining are discussed, then definitions of ore dilution currently in use are analyzed. These definitions vary depending on the authors. A new ore dilution evaluation methodology is proposed, replacing the ten different analytical expressions by only two: the planned dilution factor related to the stoping selectivity, done at the mine planning level, and the additional dilution factor related to the efficiency of the dilution control measures during stoping operations. The conclusion shows that the use of this methodology would be a definitive asset in planning, in stoping operations follow-up, and in future costs comparison studies between mining operations."

THIS essay is an attempt to present the elementary facts and ideas concerning the growth of crystals, especially of metals. Freezing, like all heterogeneous processes, is a process of nucleation and growth; it manifests itself in metallurgy primarily in the freezing of ingots. The preceding paper in this volume discusses nucleation; the paper to follow describes ingot solidification. The present paper will treat of the growth of nuclei to large crystals, embracing a long series of phenomena, many of which are familiar to metallurgists.† Crystal growth, it will be immediately noted, occurs not only in the freezing of metals, but in the freezing of all substances; and it is a prominent and familiar phenomenon in crystallization from solutions, aqueous or otherwise, and in crystallization from the vapor phase. It will be necessary to include such systems in this discussion, for so much of value to metallurgists has been learned from their study. Apart from this, so far as metals are concerned, it will be simpler to limit the discussion to the freezing of pure metals and of solid solutions. Other types of freezing-eutectic, peritectic, etc.-will be excluded, though they have much of interest and of importance. BASIC MECHANISM OF FREEZING Ideally, nucleation and growth processes can best be considered from the point of view of isothermal reaction and upon the assumption of random nucleation. In. such an ideal case, nuclei form at random, and at a characteristic rate either constant or changing with time, and grow to spherulites at a characteristic rate, constant or changing with time, Fig. I.. On the simplest assumption, the reaction rate-in this case the rate of freezing-is a resultant of these two component rates. The reaction rate equation may be written in terms of these two component rates. The formation of pearlite from austenite closely approaches this ideal case. The ideal case forms a very useful point of departure in considering real cases. Various factors of reality produce deviations from this assumed ideality. In freezing, the isotropic medium, the melt, passes to the anisotropic solid, the crystal. Crystals are lattices of atoms, and the unit cell is often referred to as a crystal unit. Rosenhain, many years ago, represented the nucleation and growth process on freezing in the manner shown in Fig. 2, feeling, intuitively, that there must be some crystal unit in crystal growth. It now appears that this may be true, though his picture requires much elaboration. The greatest deviation from ideality lies in the nonisothermal nature of the freezing process in metals. To approach this properly it should be recalled that many nonmetallic substances freeze slowly. Tests were made at the Government Fuel Yard , operated at Washington , D. C. by the Bureau of Mines , Department of the Interior , in order to determine and improve the adjustment of the carburetors on the trucks used for transporting coal from the Fuel Yard to the different Government buildings in Washington . The tests were made possible through the hearty cooperation of G , S. Pope , engineer in charge of the Fuel Yard . Joseph Burrows and A. E. Foote of the garage department assisted during all the tests and supplied information on the mileage obtained by the trucks for the months preceding and succeding the time the tests were made . The Mack trucks used range in capacity from 2-1/2 to 7-1/2 ttoonnss .. The majority of the carburetors were Stromberg G- 3 type , as shown in Table 2. During the winter months , when the demand for coal is heavy , from 30 to 35 trucks are used . At the time the tests were made , only about ten of the trucks were in daily use , owing to the small demand for coal during the summer months , and scarcity due to labor conditions . Samples of the exhaust gas were taken on the trucks kept in service for summer hauling in order to determine the carburetor adjustment as used . Changes were then made to a more economical adjustment wherever possible , without sacrificing flexibility of operation and power . In every case the adjustments were maintained for maximum power , but were adjusted to the leanest position to give that power . In all but one case the carburetors were found to be adjusted too rich for maximum power and economy . These results are considered in detail in a later part of this report .

Under authority of the Strategic Materials Act of June 1939, the Federal Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the Geological Survey, began a broad program of investigation of the strategically important chromite deposits in Sweetgrass, Stillwater, and Carbon Counties, Mont. Extensive occurrences of chromite along the Stillwater Complex in Stillwater County were investigated. The two principal deposits, The Mouat-Sampson and Benbow mines, ultimately were developed and placed in production by the Federal Government. As a part of this general development program, the Carbon County chromite deposits near Red Lodge were examined by Bureau of Mines engineers in 1940, and by the Geological Survey .1-1 1942. The district was examined earlier by Schafer, and the Four Chromes area is mentioned briefly by Westgate. Although the Red Ledge deposits were considered to be of minor importance as compared to those of the Stillwater Complex, several of the ore bodies were adaptable to open-pit mining' methods, and one large deposit on Line Creek Plateau was readily accessible to the Red Lodge-Cooke highway. In 1941, the U. 3. Vanadium Corp. began mining crude lump-chrome ore from the deposit on Line Creek Plateau to supplement national stockpiles, which were being depleted by the rearmament program and the disruption of chrome-ore imports by the European war. Access roads gore constricted to Hellroaring Plateau, and the mining operations were extended to that area. A gravity concentrator with a capacity of 200 tons per day was built and operated at Red Lodge to beneficiate lower-grade ore from the district.

The purpose of this investigation was to determine the effects of variations in content (near the residual level) of the impurities aluminum, nitrogen, manganese, and copper on the corrosion rate in pressurized hot water and in pressurized steam of zircaloy-3, a zirconium-base alloy of 0.25 percent tin and 0.25 percent iron. Thirty-five 10-pound ingots were cast with the appropriate additions of impurity elements, and these were converted to wrought sheets. These specimens were then tested both in water and in steam. The analysis of the resulting data showed that in environments of either pressurized hot water or superheated steam, corrosion rates increased with increasing content of aluminum, nitrogen, or manganese, but were not affected by variations of copper. The effects of aluminum and nitrogen were found to be greater than the effect of manganese. INTRODUCTION At the request of the Atomic Energy Commission (AEC) in August 1956, the Federal Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with Bettis Plant of Westinghouse Electric Corp., began investigating the effects of certain impurity elements on the corrosion rates of zircaloy-3 in pressurized hot water and in pressurized steam. It was necessary to know these effects in order to set control limits on residual impurity levels in zirnaloy-3, intended for heat transfer service in the nuclear reactor of the pressurized water type. A factorial expert it was designed by Westinghouse statisticians. The Atomic Energy Commission provided raw zirconium sponge purchased from Wah Chang Corp. The Bureau's laboratory at Albany, Oreg., made material of different combinations of impurity levels and subjected the material to corrosion tests. This report will describe the work done at the Bureau laboratory and will show, quantitatively the effects of different residual levels of aluminum or nitrogen, or manganese or copper on corrosion rates.

Molybdenum resources around the world are mainly associated with porphyry copper ores. Molybdenite (MoS2) is the main Mo mineral that has rhenium in its crystal lattice. This paper investigates the recovery of rhenium and molybdenum from a molybdenite concentrate using a hydrometallurgical treatment method. The molybdenite concentrate is leached with nitric acid and subjected to solvent extraction to recover and separate rhenium and molybdenum from the leached liquor. The effects of pH and the chemicals? concentration on extraction characteristics of Mo and Re are investigated to define the best condition for selective extraction of these metals. The tested leached liquor contained of 8.2 g/L Mo, 1.5 g/L Fe, 0.5 g/L Cu and 60 ppm Re. A good extraction efficiency, up to 94%, was achieved for Re from the leached liquor, where the extraction of other metals, such as Fe and Cu, was negligible. In particular, at very low pH, rhenium is extracted selectively from solution, while the extraction of molybdenum is less than 10%. After removing rhenium, molybdenum was extracted with LIX984N. The selectivity of molybdenum extraction over other metals in solution was significant. Nearly 94% of molybdenum can be extracted from the solution at a pH value of -0.12, without any interference from other metal ions such as copper and iron.
