In the past five years Cuba has been attempting to more than double its nickel production by constructing two new ammonia leaching plants. No metals are yet produced on commercial scale but a variety of oxides and sulfides. This report updates the Cuban nickel industry as a result of two visits : one at the invitation of the Cuban Ministry of Basic Industries in 1987 and the other as a consultant to the United Nations for the Cuban Laterite Project in 1989.

This paper presents a detailed and systematic approach to metallurgy diagnostics using an integrated novel gold deportment technique for complex copper-gold and refractory gold ore bodies. This uantitative gold deportment for these complex ore bodies is a challenging task due to reasons such as lower grades, high variability of visible and invisible gold content in different sulphides and iron oxide phases, significant presence of disseminated and composite carbonaceous matters along with associations of various copper sulphide phases. Gold mostly occurs as "invisible gold" (sub-microscopic gold) as solid solution or as colloidal-sized particles in different sulphides and other phases. The dominance of invisible gold and presence of highly preg-robbing and finely disseminated carbonaceous matter adversely affects gold recovery in flotation and leach circuits. Studies were initiated on various complex ore deposits and also on samples representing various process streams. Some case studies are presented in this paper to demonstrate the value of a high confidence gold deportment methodology in developing insights for problem diagnostics and to identify opportunities for metallurgical improvements. A systematic and holistic approach involving different fields of expertise is critical for successful development and delivery of solutions for complex ore bodies. Investors and other stakeholders are increasingly concerned about the quality and quantity of sustainability disclosures as well as the extent to which such disclosures correlate with sustainability practices of mining firms. This is because disclosure policies vary widely across firms in terms of extensiveness, materiality, and disclosed topic. In this paper, we conduct a preliminary examination of the relationship between sustainability performance and disclosure. We use sustainability performance indicators such as water and energy use and the Sustainability Accounting Standards Board’s (SASB’s) standards to evaluate disclosures. Our preliminary results show that some measures of sustainability performance (energy use) are negatively correlated to the amount and quality of disclosures while others (water use) are not. Thus, investors should not judge sustainability performance based solely on the amount and quality of sustainability disclosures. In addition, our results suggest that firm size and ownership as well as institutional membership could impact the strength of correlations between disclosure policy and sustainability performance

In Colombia, more than 15 regions and around 100 municipalities develop gold mining at different scales, and these operations generate mining waste composed of processing fluids and crushed rock with metals and high silica content. Cement production requires clinker, gypsum and other corrective additives. Clinker results from the partial fusion of some minerals including silica. In this study is proposed to evaluate the effect of the use of mining tailings sands from gold mining in the manufacture of clinker. The proposed methodology will allow the characterization of the sands to manufacture a cement specimen and measure its physical and fire properties

"We have recently proposed a new ""EQ Coating"" bond coat system to solve the problem of secondary reaction zone (SRZ) formation caused by bond coats applied on the hot section components of modem jet engines. A viable EQ coating alloy was previously found for a representative znd generation superalloy, TMS-82+. It would be ideal if the same could be done for a representative 5th generation superalloy, TMS-173. In this paper, we will show that the coating with the best oxidation resistance in the EQ system of TMS-173, although possessing considerably better resistance than TMS-173, did not have sufficient oxidation resistance. In order to improve the oxidation resistance of the EQ coating for TMS-173, we have ventured into ""Pseudo-EQ coatings"". A diffusion couple between the Pseudo-EQ coating and TMS-173, after 300hrs at 1100°C, had a 0-15µm IDZ, but no SRZ. A diffusion couple between a conventional coating and TMS-173 formed a 80-150 µm SRZ. After a 1 hr oxidation test at 1100°C, the PseudoEQ coating formed a thinner oxide layer than the EQ coating, but still contained NiO and spinel. Aerospace"

The Canal Road Dip Slide is an active landslide located on South Pender Island, British Columbia. The effects of the fall 2021 atmospheric river prompted the British Columbia Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure to initiate an emergency response project to realign Canal Road out of the active landslide zone for safe traffic passage. The work was tendered in a bidding process and included blasting and rock excavation work at the project site. Tetra Tech Canada Inc. was retained by the contractor to be their Blast and Vibration Specialist. The close proximities of an active landslide, a Canadian National Park, and other segments of construction posed stringent constraints to blasting. The governing constraints to blast design included a Peak Particle Velocity (PPV) limit of 3 mm/s (0.12 in/s) along the adjacent landslide centerline and a slide movement constraint. Sixteen blasts were executed throughout the scope of work to remove 2595 m3 (3394 yd3) of meta-sedimentary rock. Blast designs adhered to the constraints by utilizing up to quadruple decking in 50+ blast holes which lead to complex timing schemes. Several blasts were over 4 seconds in duration, with one at nearly 8 seconds. The landslide area was monitored with Shape Accel Arrays (SAA) throughout the scope of work that tracked geohazard slide movement during construction. The SAA data is presented, and the effect of blasting is discussed. Site specific parameters for PPV estimation were calculated and are presented. Collaboration and communication between the stakeholders allowed the project team to successfully overcome the technical challenges posed by the Canal Road Dip Slide.

White Pine Copper Company, a subsidiary of Copper Range Company located in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, mines a Precambrian sedimentary deposit containing finely disseminated chalcocite, native cop- per and native silver. Silver occurs predominately in certain strata and presently provides a mill head averaging 0.25 ounces per ton. This technical publication traces the development of silver recovery at White Fine beginning in early 1961. White Pine refined copper contains an excess of silver over and above that required to impart Lake Copper properties. The copper does not require electrolytic refining to meet industry purity requirements, nor is there sufficient silver to justify electrolysis.

Over the past 30 years, the coal industry has been continually striving to perfect methods for cleaning fine coal to acceptable ash and sulfur contents while maintaining maximum product yield. The flotation process has been part of this effort and its importance is expected to grow as new utilization technology demands finer and purer coal products. The work outlined in this paper is part of a larger effort aimed at development of new and improved flotation systems for removing sulfur and ash from as-mined coal as well as for producing super-clean coal for future markets. The concepts and data presented are now serving as a basis for designing fine-coal circuits in which improved efficiency is obtained by optimum use of flotation.

"Nova Scotia Department of Mines and Energy Throughout the history of Nova Scotia, trends in the production and use of its coal resources have resulted in major impacts on the economy and society of the province. Current trends in coal demand locally, nationally and internationally are having and will have an increasing positive effect on Nova Scotia over the next twenty years-in terms of energy supply, job creation and general economic development. Coal for electrical generation is an immediate and key objective of Nova Scotia's energy plan; and, in the long term, coal-derived fuels will meet the province's needs for transportation fuels. Demand for metallurgical coal is also expected to increase, especially if the merchant coke plant currently under investigation becomes a reality.Meeting these coal supply and utilization objectives in the face of increasing environmental, social and economic constraints poses a tremendous technical challenge. Work has begun on projects to expand coal production capacity and to adapt new technologies for coal preparation and utilization to the specific needs of Nova Scotia; much more work will be required in the coming decade in order to succesfully tap this resource.IntroductionThe energy problem facing Atlantic Canada has a few unique features not found in the rest of the country. Canada, as a whole, has access to a diverse mix of energy resources, including crude oil, natural gas, coal, hydro and uranium, with the result that crude oil supplies only about 40 per cent of Canada's primary demand. In contrast, foreign crude oil dominates Atlantic Canada's energy mix, supplying over 70 per cent of the primary energy demand.This results in important differences in various sectors. Nationally, about 5 per cent of the electricity is generated from oil whereas last year in Nova Scotia approximately 40 per cent of the electricity generated was from imported oil. Residential, commercial and industrial space heating, and industrial process heating in Atlantic Canada was almost 100 percent dependent on foreign oil. This is in sharp contrast to the situation in central and western Canada, which have access to secure domestic natural gas, oil and hydro electricity."

APPENDIX C - HOISTING SYSTEMS - AVAILABLE EQUIPMENT C 1 - Introduction A survey has been made of available hoisting equipment which has applications for use in metal and non-metal mine emergency escape hoist systems. The information was gathered from a number of sources, including representatives in the USBM and MESA, mine operators, personal visits and telephone interviews with manufacturers, field visits to inspect equipment, advertisements, catalogues and indices of manufacturers. Wherever possible, technical specifications and prices were checked out with the manufacturer, or supplier. The sections on individual sub-systems and components, such as automatic control systems, winches and controls, are not intended to be all encompassing surveys. Rather a reasonable number of representative units in each category are discussed. The sample is large enough to provide a general picture of the kind of equipment available, including the abilities and limitations and a reasonable price range. Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of B. sc. Eng (Mining Engineering) The purpose of this investigation was to assess the mining strategy for steep reefs at Mine A mine in 2005 and 2006. Reefs steeper than 35° were discovered when production commenced at the mine. At that time reefs steeper than 35° were not popular in South African tabular gold mines, therefore new techniques of mining them had to be developed. The underhand mining method was chosen for this purpose. The project was about assessing ventilation, support costs, local support cycles, adherence to the mine?s support standards, mine planning and efficiencies of the underhand mining method. The project work was covered by doing a literature research for underhand mining methods and performing a literature review of the mining methods, support methods, ventilation standards at Mine A. Underground visits were conducted at Mine A mine for data collection, and Mine B was visited to obtain information on support costs and efficiencies. During the investigation it was realized that the underhand mining method was an appropriate method for mining steep reefs; however, there were some challenges related to ventilation and support installation. Efficiencies could be realized with the underhand mining method and planning and scheduling were not different from breast mining.

Phosphate tailings through Flotation contains large amount of dolomite which is difficult to be separated from apatite. In this present research, phosphate tailings is recycled by Flotation i.e. re-processing. High-purity dolomite with purity as high as 91.17% is seperated, which contains 19.82% of MgO. The results of orthogonal test show that the effect of various levels of different factors on the high-purity dolomite floatated. Future utilization of purified dolomite is also discussed: magnesium fertiliser especially magnesium phosphate is expected to be an ideal product from high-purity dolomite.

Procedures for the determination of the operating point that results when a fan is connected to a mine and placed in operation have been a source of confusion for decades. A variety of techniques has been proposed, often to the detriment of the practicing ventilation engineer trying to apply the techniques to the multitudinous mine/fan matching problems encountered in the engineering of mine ventilation systems. This paper proposes some different assumptions and definitions that simplify the solution of problems in determining the operating point. As a result, a set of procedures is provided for determining the operating point of a mine/fan system when the outlet areas of the mine and fan are known. To establish a major simplification in the development of procedures for the determination of the operating point for a mine/fan combination, the authors suggest that the mine pressures be redefined and then used in such a manner that the conservation of energy is ensured. This provides the basis for the recommendation that the fan operating point be determined using the fan total pressure and the system total pressure characteristics. This procedure can be applied to fans in the blower, booster, and exhaust positions equally well and to both single-fan and multiple-fan networks. Another advantage is that the method is applicable to fans with or without an evase.

"In sheet metal forming process, the forming limit and strain distribution are governed by plastic instability and fracture following strain localization. It has been proved that the temperature gradient caused by plastic deformation as well as friction is one of the crucial factors to induce the strain localization in high-speed metal forming processes. In this paper, a numerical simulation of the sheet metal extrusion process has been conducted by using thermal-mechanical coupling finite element method. An improved mixed finite element method has been used to solve the large deformation elasto-plastic problem. In thermal phase, the transient heat transfer finite element method together with the Crank-Nicholson algorithm has been employed to determine the temperature field. Both the numerical results and the experimental observations reveal that the temperature gradient plays an important role in inducing the strain localization, which eventually leads to fracture failure in the sheet metal extrusion process.IntroductionSheet metal extrusion is such a process where the extrusion punch penetrates into one surface of the sheet metal material to let it extrude and flow towards the outlet of the die. This process can be used to produce protruding parts on a strip material. In engineering applications, the quality of the product is affected by many factors such as stress state, loading speed, material properties and lubrication condition. The research on failure mechanisms and improvement of formability in sheet metal forming processes by exploitation of differential thermal conditions has been of great interest recently [1-3]. It has been proved that the temperature gradient caused by plastic deformation, heat transfer, and friction between sheet and tools is one of crucial factors to affect 'the formability in high speed sheet metal forming processes [4]. In our previous study of sheet metal extrusion, it has been observed that plastic deformation is highly localized and some specimens are subjected to fracture failure in the form of crack propagation [5]. To understand this failure phenomenon, the effects of temperature gradients must not be ignored."

From a geological or mineralogical standpoint the combination is justifiable , for soapstone essentially is impure talc . Commercially , however , the relation between them is remote . About 95 per cent of all talc sold in the United States is in ground form, whereas practically all soapstone is sold as furnace blocks or as fabricated structural slabs for many and diverse applications .

The search for minerals typically starts with a reconnaissance phase. After finding a promising target area, further prospecting work will be conducted. Finally with growing confidence of having encountered an ore deposit with commercially viable concentrations of relevant minerals, an extensive exploration campaign will verify its potential. Best practice and reliable, efficient tools for mineral resource estimation of massive sulfide deposits in the deep sea have to be established yet. Therefore, a new seabed exploration system is in development. Various challenges are caused by the extreme environmental conditions in the deep sea and by the nature of massive sulfide deposits. Information of past and ongoing expeditions were gathered to form the basis of an in-depth requirement analysis. System functions and corresponding process times were derived. The experience from the existing MeBo seabed drill rigs serve as starting point for the concept study and following development. Initial MeBo system was built for maritime research purposes and now has to be converted into a new design, suitable for efficient and economic resource exploration. The new system configuration is modular structured to adapt easily to different application scenarios and challenges. To achieve an extension of the deployment depths, the overall equipment weight has to be limited through light weight construction and material. The drilling module contains a range of geotechnical coring tools to face the varying soil conditions of heterogeneous massive sulfide formations. The major challenge to overcome is the touch down sequence on uneven, 25° inclined, rough terrain in up to 4.000 m water depth. Furthermore, high precision of the final unit positioning is necessary. Landing sub-system proof of concept is validated in laboratory environment with small scale model. A novel seabed exploration system capable to land and operate safely on highly inclined slopes of mineral deposit is described. Obtaining high quality samples by wire-line coring technique is the objective.

The High Pressure Grinding Roll (HPGR) is gaining acceptance in the mineral processing industry and has become a competitive technology in reducing the specific energy consumption in Mineral processing plants. The amount of samples required for HPGR amenability testwork and HPGR wear tests is usually high and often cannot be available at early stage of projects were only a few drill cores are available. Although HPGR was initiated from small scale piston die compression tests, the development of small scale piston die test to predict the performance of HPGR has been slow. The objectives of this paper was to present the designs, operating procedure of piston-die press and operating conditions which have resulted in similar particle size distribution obtained from a piston die test and HPGR Labwal unit starting from the same feed size distribution. Testwork were conducted using a 2 MN piston-die press and a Labwal HPGR unit on major South African ore types, viz, gold, platinum and iron ores. The results obtained show that piston-die test can generate data to predict energy consumption, product size distribution, and even to evaluate the edge effect.
