FROM almost every point of view, petroleum was "strategic mineral number one" during the World War that ended in 1945. Even the spectacular advent of the atomic bomb in the final days of the conflict did not displace it from its position of prime importance, although within a few years uranium will almost certainly be the "number one" material in the minds of military strategists, if it is not even now in that position. But both as fuel and as raw material for chemical industries, petroleum will hold the center of the stage for many years to come. Hardly any other substance illustrates so fully the manner in which science and technology may be combined to achieve the utmost success in contributing to human efficiency and comfort. In another paper the writer has described an investigation in which the forms of sulphur in coke were determined and described. Coke was found to contain four characteristic forms of sulphur- namely, ferrous sulphide, sulphates, ad- sorbed free sulphur, and sulphur held in solid solution in the carbon. While the coke is still in the oven, only two forms of sulphur are present namely, the ferrous sulphide and the sulphur in solid solution in the carbon. During the quenching, however, the sulphur of the coke is subjected to considerable oxidation, a portion of the ferrous sulphide being oxidized to free sulphur and sulphates, while the solid solution form remains unchanged. The coke, however, loses no sulphur during this process, since the free sulphur which is formed ie retained by the coke in an adsorbed form. Since this oxidation of the ferrous sulphide took place so easily, an inves- tigation was undertaken to determine whether this property could not be taken ad- vantage of in some industrial process for the desulphurization of coke. Although it is true that such a roasting process would not touch the solid-solution form of sul- phur, still the removal of the ferrous sulphide sulphur would undoubtedly benefit the coke from the standpoint of the metallurgist. This improvement in the coke would result not only from the decrease in total sulphur, but also from the large decrease in the ferrous sulphide, which is responsible for the contamination of the iron in the upper part of the blast-furnace. The de sulphurization of coke by roasting in air it a new idea, but dates back to the earliest days of coke manufacture. In 1871, Philipparts published the results of some work done by him on the de sulphurization of coke by air, as well as a review of the results of earlier investigators. In the se earlier experiments, nothing was known of the forms in which the sulphur existed in the coke, while the temperature measurements were only approximate, so that altogether the results were not very conclusive nor complete. The de sulphurisation figures given by the se early investigators generally showed a low efficiency for the process, but some extraordinary results were claimed by certain inventors. In the light of our new knowledge concerning the coke sulphur, it seemed to be important enough to warrant investigation.

Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) data shows that since 2006 the balance of capital costs associated with mine development has become weighted greater than 75 per cent to enabling infrastructure and less than 25 per cent on process plant, equipment and machinery. The well-developed mine planning techniques including pit optimisation and scheduling and process plant design and optimisation have typically proceeded in a linear fashion from geology, mine planning, through processing, with some iterations back to the mine. Only then is attention paid to planning and costing of enabling infrastructure in any detail.Optimisation has typically involved developing cut-off grades, mine plans and schedules and ore processing that produces maximum economic ore. Infrastructure has then been sized æto suitÆ the mining and processing core business drivers.What the ABS data, together with global trends, indicates is that infrastructure can no longer be an afterthought if miners wish to achieve robust project value estimates, realistic ore to market costing and resource statements based on achievable economic cut-off grades.In addition, with such a large proportion of the costs originating from non-mining or processing activities, a mining operation can only be truly optimal if these aspects are given due consideration in the mine design stages, based on quality geometallurgical inputs so that the size and cost of enabling infrastructure is optimised to maximise project value.This paper outlines an iterative holistic approach to mining project development, which integrates the geometallurgical approach and enables infrastructure planning into project design and evaluation. O presente trabalho teve por finalidade analisar as tensões residuais, através da técnica de difração de raios-X, em amostras de cobre submetidas à laminação em temperatura ambiente. Foram obtidos e comparados os resultados de um software comercial com um software projetado pelos autores. O comportamento das tensões principais das amostras laminadas foi comparado com o resultado do material no estado recozido. Uma tendência de aumento de tração trativa no interior da amostra foi identificada. Os resultados obtidos seguiram um comportamento dentro do previsto pela bibliografia e os dois softwares utilizados acusaram valores similares, ratificando a aplicabilidade do método de difração assim como a funcionalidade do software desenvolvido.

Dimensional stone processing has become an important part of the world extractive industry, and today?s total stone block yearly production is estimated to be around 134.000.000 tons and is still growing by an average yearly rate of approximately 20%. In future, the same production will become an important part of the mining industry and presently, in some countries it represents even the main mining output. New environmental regulations, together with landscape and nature conservation requirements, create a number of difficulties in setting up new open pit dimensional stone quarries. As a result, many dimensional stone producers have recently started to apply underground techniques in order to produce the ornamental stone blocks intended for further processing. Underground production of stone blocks requires special mining methods and so far it has not been a cost-effective excavation method for all types of rocks. Presently, this type of stone excavation is generally applied in sedimentary and marble deposits because the rock has small to no mineral quartz content. When starting a new underground dimensional stone mine, it is necessary to analyse the impact of all primary factors which are crucial to set up a technically and cost effective advanced underground dimensional stone mine. The role of physical and mechanical properties of the rock, geological conditions, mineralogical composition, micro-tectonic state of the site, rock mechanic conditions on the site, durability and saw ability of the stone are decisive factors in foreseeing the future methods of extraction. The laboratory research work as well as the field work, is very important in decision-making aimed to choose the future excavation method. Also of equal importance is the serious market research, because it renders the indication of selling price potential. Having obtained the results from both types of research, mining engineers can design the mining methods which optimize financial return to the mine. The practice approved by 15 years of testing in the underground limestone quarry of Kanfanar gives future producers very useful advice and general data to facilitate the process of exploration intended to establish new similar underground quarries.

Flotation is one of the most important processes in the copper production industry. The copper grade in the concentrate is a pivotal indicator of the flotation process performance. However, it is difficult to achieve real-time measurement through hardware sensors. Based on the production data provided by an industrial operation, a novel soft sensor based on multi-layer perceptron (MLP) is proposed for effective monitoring of this pivotal indicator. The proposed soft sensor uses the nonnegative garrote (NNG) to perform global variable selection for MLP, while a local search (LS) approach is incorporated to improve the model presented by NNG. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm has higher prediction accuracy and better model simplicity than other algorithms. Furthermore, the variables selected are consistent with the field experience, and the developed model can provide reference of feedback control for the optimisation of the process. The quality and the production rate for the mining operations in the Garpenberg mine has been much improved due to a new system, that presents the latest exploratory and planning data for the driller at the moment he deploys the drill rig at the face. Other components in this improvement work are better planning procedure, large-scale production system with longer rounds and introduction of new drill rigs in the mine. The new Rig Control System (RCS) for the new series Atlas Copco Boomers L2C has made it possible to develop this system for production drilling in the Garpenberg mine. The ABC Regular has been extended with map navigation and drill plan generator. The driller will have the best estimate of the orebody in front of him and the best drill plan for that orebody. The customer’s specific system will also become a standard Atlas Copco product for the Boomer ABC drill rig family.

"Abstract - Electromagnetic surveys were conducted over the Yava sandstone-hosted lead deposit in Nova Scotia to evaluate the usefulness of such surveys for detecting and mapping sedimentary­ hosted metallic ore deposits. Both transient and multifrequency systems were used for that purpose. The deposit consists of three zones of disseminated galena which also contain minor amounts of pyrite and sphalerite filling the interstices of the sandstone grains. Each zone overlies a basement depression and is separated from the adjacent zone by an intervening basement high. A conductive shale layer underlies the galena-rich sandstone formation at all three zones.Because the concentration of galena (3% to 4% ) and other sulfides is too low to affect the resistivity of the sandstone formations for detection by ground electromagnetic (EM) methods, the strategy for our survey was to look for areas of basement depressions and the presence of conductive shale in those depressions by EM depth soundings. The presence of the galena-rich sandstone formations could be inferred because of the close association of these two features with the deposits in the Yava area. Both transient and multifrequency EM systems were successful in mapping the basement depressions and detecting conductive shale at the three known mineralized zones. The technique, therefore, seems to offer good prospects for mapping similar stratabound sedimentary-hosted sulfide deposits."

"Abstract - Gamma-ray spectrometry, an effective tool in geological mapping, was used to define boundaries between various lithological formations in three adjacent areas of Central Syria, namely, the Syrian Desert, Ar Rassafeh Badiayat and the Northern Palmyrides mountains. This paper describes the role of an airborne gamma spectrometric survey which was orginally undertaken to assist uranium exploration. Interpretation of the total count data obtained through the survey has led to significant modifications and corrections to the previously published distribution map of the palaeogene phosphate rocks.Another important result of the survey is the discovery of four previously unknown phosphorite horizons in the Rasm Al-Aawabed area of the Northern Palmyrides. In addition, previously unknown phosphatic horizons are outlined in the other study areas. The importance of this technique as an effective prospecting method, not only for U but also for exploring for the economically important phosphorite formations in Syria, is emphasized. Furthermore, its role in geological mapping is stressed, especially in areas that lack sufficient geological data."

The results obtained in a study of the stress conditions existing in a drill bit-point area and in the underlying rock, when the bit was in full but nonpenetrative contact with the rock, are presented. This investigation by the Bureau of Mines was the preliminary exploratory phase of a long-range program of research on rock drilling to establish criteria for the maximum economically feasible rate of rock penetration. The photoelastic technique of experimental stress analysis was the principal method used to obtain the data. Transparent models and transmitted light were employed to investigate patterns in drill-bit models and isotropic materials under the bit when subjected to a concentrated static load. Comparative stress data for anisotropic rock were obtained by the reflective photoelastic technique. Brittle lacquer and an extensometer were used obtain supplementary information wherever substantiating data were desired to check photoelastic results. The zone of maximum shear occurs along an arc near the contact face of the bit. The stress distribution pattern in an isotropic model rock near the area contacted by the bit was nearly a mirror image of that exhibited within a similar areal zone of the bit. The stress pattern in granodiorite specimens was similar, though not symmetric, to the pattern in the isotropic model rock. The asymmetry of the stress pattern in the granodiorite was attributed to the anisotropic characteristics of the constituent minerals of various sizes.

"The magnesite flotation operation of Magnesita Refractories, in Brumado – Brazil, has four parallel ball mills working in closed circuit with hydrocyclones to grind the ore for the reverse flotation of silicates in mechanical cells. The modification proposed here opens the circuit for three of the ball mills so that their products are collected together to feed a high frequency screen. The oversize of the screen feeds the fourth ball mill in closed circuit for secondary comminution. The product reports to dewatering and flotation. The undersize undergoes desliming and subsequent flotation operation. According to pilot tests performed, the modification on the magnesite flotation operation will promote a 20% increase in the productivity, 8.5% increase in mass recovery and a 26% reduction in water consumption. The gains are due to the fact that the silicates in the feed are concentrated in the smaller particles (<100µm) with over grinding in the existing closed comminution circuit, making it impossible to take advantage of this natural selectivity. The combination of open circuit, more selective milling, and the high frequency screen, ensures high efficiency particle size classification. This renders the process more effective, both to the screen undersize with its high contents of silicates and fines, and to the screen oversize, which is almost without fines and has a higher magnesite grade. This situation allows for the setting of specific parameters for the flotation of both the primary milling undersize and the secondary milling product.INTRODUCTIONMagnesita Refractories, with its operations site in Brumado, is the largest producer of high purity dead burned magnesia (DBM) in Latin America. The magnesite ore is extracted from an open pit mine, named Pomba, after which it is crushed and handpicked. Due to the presence of disseminated silicate the ore has to be ground and concentrated by means of reverse flotation, before feeding the high temperature kilns for sintering and conversion to DBM.The magnesite flotation unit has an impact crusher to reduce the size of the feeding ore, which is transported to the mills by conveyor belts. The milling operation is composed of four ball mills in closed circuit with hydrocyclones. The closed circuit generates a high circulating load with excess fines, which is detrimental to the selectivity of the desliming and flotation operations, reducing both mass andmetallurgical recovery.In the current scenario, the capacity of the flotation plant is insufficient to meet the demand of the DBM kilns, forcing the operation to work with high purity ores in order to attain the highest possible mass recovery in the concentration process. This is not an ideal situation as it requires the mining site to work with higher stripping ratios.The objective of this work was to improve the magnesite flotation unity to increase its productivity. After a detailed analysis, the milling was identified as the limiting process, which made the authors to focus on this operation."

Field-testing of a new on-stream X-ray fluorescence analyzer was conducted in a copper concentrator. The evaluation of copper tailings and concentrate streams indicated a statistically acceptable correlation with laboratory chemical analyses. The new equipment employs a “components off-the-shelf” approach to minimize capital cost and maintenance issues and to utilize the latest advancements in X-ray fluorescence detector technology and computer capability. A general description of the system is provided, and performance of the analyzer measuring copper (Cu), iron (Fe), and molybdenum (Mo) is presented.

According to the annual survey of beehive-coke plants by the Bureau of Mines, United States Department of the Interior, there were 61 plants with 9,549 ovens in the United States on December 31, 1956, This publication in¬cludes only those for which an annual report was filed with the Bureau of Mines. Not all plants listed were active, however, as nearly one-third of those canvassed were idle all year. A compilation of the returns showed that 44 plants with 6,920 ovens were active part or all year and 17 plants with 2,629 ovens were idle throughout the year. The capacity of beehive ovens has fluctuated between 6 and 14 million tons during the past decade. At the end of 1956, the annual coke capacity of beehive ovens on which reports were received amounted to 5.8 million tons. As noted in table 2, however, not all of this capacity was in operating condition, as 2,093 ovens with a capacity of 1.2 million tons were not operable on [ember] 31, 1956.

This is the sixth annual tabulation that gives mineral royalty information. This tabulation, like the previous editions, includes all of the earlier data plus more than 100 new entries. In addition to the royalty information, some entries show the cost of purchased reserves. An article in the December 1984 Kentucky Coal Journal could have far reaching applications. It explains that a banking firm examined the "reserve risk" as one of six factors for analysis when financing a coal project. The firm concluded that coal reserves in Kentucky are worth an average of $0.29/t ($0.26 per st) in-place. The banking firm based this in-place value on its examination of more than 50 leases. In-place value is especially important when trying to establish a mineral value for a given deposit. Ernie Lehman wrote to this author after last year&apos;s column appeared and he quoted the lease rates for lead and zinc on federal land. He states, from first hand information, that the leases are based on a percentage of net smelter return as follows: 4% for the first five years, 4.5% for the next five years, and 5% thereafter. The figures used in last year&apos;s column ($ per st) came from dividing reported royalty income by reported production. The information reported last year merely translates the results of the net smelter return (as written in the lease) to royalty income per ton to the US Government for the various years. Statistics from the Minerals Management Service of the Federal Government show that oil and gas account for 40% and 53%, respectively, of the Federal royalty income. Coal accounts for about 4% and all other minerals, the remaining 3%. Oil and gas leases are mostly at 12.5%. Most of the coal leases are at 12.5% for surface mining operations and 8% for underground mining. Many of the other commodities are leased at 5%, which has been true for decades. Relative to Federal leases, this year&apos;s table shows some percentages and some costs per ton. This was done to give information about the leases and also to show income produced by various commodities. Note that some commodities have a variation in $/ton even though the royalty percent is the same. These variations result from a combination of factors that influence the value of a mineral commodity. The same caveats that have appeared in previous columns relative to factors that influence the value of reserves are restated. The data in the table serve as a general reference and are not intended to present an absolute scale of reserves costs. Several factors influence the value of any mineral commodity. The factors include: • location/transportation (especially significant for most industrial minerals); • market conditions both for the commodity and the company acquiring the right to mine it; *quality or grade of the deposit as it reflects the amount of processing/beneficiation necessary to produce the finished product; and • legislative restrictions and conditions for mining a given material at a given site. These and other factors will significantly influence the cost of reserves. The table shows the range of royalties and the variations in the basis of computing the fees. In a few instances, it gives the cost of acquired reserves based on purchase price and quantitative estimates of the material in place. The table lists the commodity in column 1, and the subsequent columns give the location - either by state, US geographic area or Canadian province; the cost - R for royalty and P for purchased cost; and the year in which the lease or purchase agreement occurred. The last column offers either comments or gives a footnote number for more information. The cost column requires more explanation. The units may refer to cubic yards (/yd), cubic feet (/cu ft), tons (/T, 2000 lbs) or acres (/A). 1 cu yd = 0.7646 m3 1 cu ft = 0.2832 m3 1st=0.9078t 1 acre = 0.4047 hm or m2 In several cases, the royalty is a percentage of the sales price of the finished product and is levied against either the amount produced or the amount sold. This paper, one of a series being prepared for and published by the United States Bureau of Mines on methods and costs of mining at various mica mines in the United States, describes the methods now in use in the principal mica mines of the Southern Appalachian States. Those papers are designed to disseminate technical information regarding the methods used. The cost tabulations represent operating expenditures only and not total costs. It is recognized that publication of total costs might in some instances cause embarrassment to individual producers as well as to the industry as a whole. On the other hand, operating costs are essential to the technical discussion and study of methods employed. The attention of the reader is specifically called to this differentiation in order that no misunderstanding of the scope of the cost tabulations shall ensue.

The design of most underground support systems has largely been based upon empirical rules. This design method has proven to be satisfactory in most cases as witnessed by the number of successfully completed works. However, the adequacy of this approach to the developing technology of ground support systems associated with deep excavation has not been substantiated. In cases where the material has definite time-dependent behavior parameters, rules of past experience become extremely vague and conservative. The Spokane Mining Research Center is currently engaged in extensive research to develop rational design methods for underground structures which will account for the many interacting factors such as in-situ properties of the rock mass, excavation methods, proposed types of support system, construction sequence, and environmental variables. A large number of boundary value problems encountcred in unsteady-state heat transfer, fluid flow through porous media, neutron diffusion and mass transfer involve the solution of a linear, parabolic partial differential equation commonly refcrred to as the diffusivity equation, where U is the dependent potential variable. K is the diffusivity (hydraulic, thermal, neutron, etc.) and 1 is the time variablc. Solutions to Eq. I are available in the literature for a wide variety of initial and houndary conditions. The great majority of these solutions are ohtained for geometric boundaries corresponding to linear. cylindrical or spherical flow models. A typical engineering application where the solution to Eq. 1 is required is the calculation of underground water encroachment across the boundaries of oil or natural gas reservoirs, In this particular area of application, the reservoir boundary is invariably approximated by circular geometry. However. the areal shape of many reservoirs can be better approximated by elliptic rather than circular boundaries. Thus the need for a general method of solving the diffusivity equation in elliptic coordinates arises in this problem as well as in other engineering applications involving elliptic boundaries. The solution to the diffusivity equation usually in volves the Error Function for the linear flow model, Bessel functions for the radial flow model and trigonometric or Legendre functions for the spherical flow model. It is well known that the general solution to the diffusivity equation in elliptic coordinates involves Mathieu functions. The significance of Mathieu functions in the analytical treatment of the diffusivity equation in elliptic coordinates is discussed in the literature However, these references do not providc analytical solutions useful in practical engineering problems. The objectives of this papcr are the development of the equations describing the unsteady-state liquid flow through a porous medium with an elliptic inner boun- dary, the development of a numerical method of solving these equations and, finally, a comparison of the water encroachment quantities calculated from the elliptic flow equation with those calculated from the radial flow equation. While the specific problem treated in this paper relates to unsteady-state liquid flow through a porous medium, the basic equations and computational techniques devcloped will apply equally well to problems occurring in the other areas of engincering interest mentioned previously. The solution given here is limited to a single case in which thc outer boundary encloses an area 100 times that of the inner boundary. DESCRIPTION OF THE FLOW MODEL Fig. 1 shows the flow model upon which the calcu lations presented in this paper are based. The inncr and outer houndaries of the flow model are represented by two confocal ellipses with major and minor axes, respectively, equal to 2a1, 2b1, and 2a, and 26,. The height of the elliptic cylinder flow model is denoted by 17.
