In a fully mechanized top coal caving mining process, the mechanical properties of the top coal deteriorate constantly, and the stability of the support is determined by the boundary position of the top coal entering the limit equilibrium state. Top coal flaking occurs more easily along the advancing direction owing to an increase in the distance of the boundary from the wall. Moreover, the strength of the coal seam is an important factor that determines the boundary position. The equation of the top coal limit equilibrium zone boundary, used in fully mechanized top coal caving mining, was determined based on the limit equilibrium theory, continuum damage mechanics, and the Hoek–Brown rock empirical strength criterion. Using the RFPA3D and UDEC numerical analysis methods, the effect of top coal strength on the mechanical behavior during the mining process was determined; and the space–time relationship between the top coal deformation failure, damage evolution, and boundary of the limit equilibrium zone was established. The results revealed that when the coal mass entered the limit equilibrium zone, accelerated crack development, accelerated damage, and axial unloading occurred. Moreover, an increase in the coal seam strength caused the boundary of the top coal limit equilibrium zone to be closer to the wall. By comparing the numerical results with the theoretical results, the overall trend was found to be consistent, allowing the verification of the rationality and reliability of the determination equation of the boundary position of the limit equilibrium zone.

"It has been the practice in Europe to extract the most economic seams first: taking the seams sequentially, top down, to avoid operating within the fractured strata formed by the subsidence trough above previously mined coal seams. In the 1990s, the UK coal industry found itself at a number of sites having to operate over one or more previously mined seams. This led to specific geotechnical challenges with respect to maintaining economic, safe and stable rectangular roadways with rock-bolted support.Within this paper, the current challenges and mitigation strategies of overmining in the UK are described following the completion of a -three-year European Commission-funded project in 2015. The challenges and mitigation strategies are related to:• A case study with overmining of older workings of variable geometry;• Numerical modeling for overmining layout and support design; and• A case study site planning mine layout when considering future overmining.INTRODUCTIONAt the first case study site, case histories were examined for a mine operating at a depth of approximately 700 meters where five longwall panels were extracted above workings 35-40 m below. The overmining of various extraction geometries below led to challenging conditions in areas of high vertical stress concentration. It was found that results from one longwall panel could be suitably used to predict behaviour in a subsequent panel. The experience was used to update previously existing guidelines on the positioning of roadways in relation to subsidence troughs. Existing guidelines recommended that only as a last resort should longwalls be planned to retreat over narrow pillars, or from solid ground into a subsidence trough. Existing guidelines regarding the layout of overmining panels are conservative, and new work indicates that such multi-seam geometries are possible with appropriate support management strategies."

"Recycling polymer based end-of-life materials as carbon resources for a partial replacement of coke/coal can make important contributions towards enhancing the environmental sustainability of steelmaking processes. An in-depth high temperature (1550°C) investigation has been carried on waste CDs/DVDs focussed specifically on char generation, characterization and dissolution into molten iron. The simultaneous presence of carbon and oxygen in polymeric chains on polycarbonate substrates resulted in the generation of a significant pore structure and exposed surfaces. Carbon dissolution studies into molten iron were carried out on the raw polymer as well on chars; high levels of carbon pick-up were observed in both cases after 15 minutes of contact at high temperatures. INTRODUCTIONOver the past sixty years, plastics have played an important part of our daily lives and are being increasingly used in all aspects of the global economy. More than 260 million tons of plastics are produced annually worldwide. Their rapid growth and extensive utilization with a short life span (such as packaging) has created a massive waste problem. Although the waste plastic component in municipal solid waste (MSW) amounts to only about 10 %, plastics have a high volume-to-weight ratio and these are generally not biodegradable. In Australia, ~19.20 % of plastics were recycled in 2009-2010 (PACIA, 2010); with the total consumption being estimated at 1,501,258 tonnes, 288,194 tonnes of plastics were recycled. There are serious environmental concerns with the two key waste management options, i.e. land filling and incineration, and there exists an urgent need for developing alternative recycling approaches. In this paper, we focus our attention on recycling waste CDs/DVDs polycarbonate substrates as a carbon resource in steelmaking.CDs/DVDs used for music/data/image are made from aromatic polycarbonate resin (hereafter abbreviated PC). This resin is also widely used as an engineering plastic in applications such as automobiles, mobile phones, notebook type personal computers, cameras & video cameras, electric & electronic appliances, fire equipment, life & living goods, roofing sheets, etc. High consumption and growth (~10% annually) of PC utilization is attributed to its excellent properties such as outstanding impact resistance, transparency, heat resistance, and dimensional stability. Radioactive tracer techniques were used to gain a better knowledge of the types of compounds that cause gum formation in gasoline during storage . A selected organic compound was labeled with tritium and purified . An unstable gasoline was tagged by adding a small amount of the labeled compound . After storage of the gasoline at 110 ° F for 16 weeks , the gum that had formed was recovered . The amount of the test compound converted to gum was determined by liquid scintillation counting . About 70 compounds , including several classes and types , were studied . The compounds , listed in order of descending reactivity in the test fuel , were sulfur compounds , nitrogen compounds , polycyclic hydrocarbons , olefins , alkylbenzenes , and saturates . In the order of decreasing percentage of each in the gum , the compounds were monoolefins , alkylbenzenes , sulfur compounds , polycyclic hydrocarbons , nitrogen compounds , and diolefins . This type of information should be helpful in developing a method for predicting the storage stability of gasoline .

The Bureau of Mines formulated a method for calculating the concentration of entrained dust from a dust deposit by a turbulent gas stream. In particular, a diffusion equation is used to calculate dust concentrations in a channel following an explosion. Dust leaving the channel walls was treated as originating from stationary or moving, and single or multiple material sources. Formulas and sample computations for various types of dust sources in circular and rectangular channels are given, based on experimental entrainment rates. The analysis predicts the dust concentration as a function of time and channel space. The results appear to agree with the physical characteristics of explosion-driven dust dispersion in a O.6-m-diameter, 50-m-long explosion tunnel. The analysis is also applied to simultaneous and consecutive dispersion of coal and rock dust from simulated coal mine surfaces (walls, floor, roof, and ribs).

Abstract Golden Manitou Mines, Limited, nine miles east of the town of Val d'Or in northwestern Quebec, are presently milling, at the rate of 1,000 tons daily, a relatively complex 3.11-phide ore and producing, in decreasing order of value, zinc, silver, gold, lead, and copper. The products are a zinc concentrate, a silver-lead-copper concentrate, and a silver-gold precipitate from cyanidation. Although several independent pre-production metallurgical investigations into the treatment of the ore were carried out, current practice is different from any of the recommended methods and, while still leaving room for improvement, is considerably more effective than earlier performance. Flow-sheet developments from the commencement of operations in 1942 are dealt with briefly, showing the reasons for making numerous changes, the shortcomings of the various schemes tried, and, finally, covering data pertinent to present-day practice. From the recovery standpoint, silver has presented the greatest difficulty. The writer's association with the Company coincided with the start of production. Characteristics of the Ore The predominant metallic minerals present in the ore, in decreasing order of their abundance, are: pyrite, sphalerite, galena and chalcopyrite, with lesser amounts of argentiferous tennantite-tetrahedrite, arsenopyrite, covellite, bornite, and chalcocite. The sphalerite is mostly light in colour, sometimes colourless, and practically free from combined iron. Some of the sphalerite is very closely associated with minor amounts of pyrite, chalcopyrite, and galena. Pyrie is abundantly disseminated as medium to fine grains; more rarely it is massive and contains occasional grains of sphalerite, galena, and chalcopyrite.

Esse trabalho tem por objetivo, propor a utilização de um dispositivo, criado na UFPE, para estudar a fadiga funcional e mecânica num atuador de Ti-Ni com memória de forma. Inicialmente, fios de Ti-Ni com efeito memória de forma, com 0,89 mm de diâmetro, foram submetidos a um tratamento térmico de homogeneização por 24 horas a temperatura de 500ºC e têmpera em água a 25ºC. Posteriormente, os mesmos foram submetidas a calorimetria diferencial de varredura para obtenção das temperaturas de transformação. De posse desses dados, foram confeccionados atuadores com a forma de mola helicoidal. Utilizando o dispositivo proposto, esses atuadores foram submetidos às deformações cíclicas, com expansão total de 10mm, num banho térmico programável, a temperatura constante de 85ºC, na condição supereslástica, essa etapa é denominada neste trabalho de ciclo rápido. Com o objetivo de analisar o efeito dessas deformações cíclicas sobre as temperaturas de transformação e a capacidade de recuperação de forma dos atuadores foi realizada um segunda etapa, aqui denominada de ciclo lento. Nessa etapa, os atuadores foram solicitados à esforços de tração equivalentes a tensão de cisalhamento no fio de 70 MPa, dentro do intervalo de temperatura entre 15°C e 85°C, e tiveram o deslocamento e as temperaturas de transformação monitorados por um sensor LVDT e por um termopar respectivamente. Os ciclos rápidos e lentos são intercalados periodicamente. Dessa forma, observou-se a influência da ciclagem termomecânica na degradação do efeito de memória de forma.

Os aços inoxidáveis duplex apresentam propriedades superiores, quando comparados aos aços austeníticos e ferríticos, tornando-o bastante competitivo no mercado, inclusive na substituição dos aços AISI 316 e 316L. A soldabilidade dos aços duplex baixa liga, como o UNS S82441, não é tão boa quanto a dos austeníticos, exigindo um controle rígido da composição química do metal de solda e dos ciclos térmicos de soldagem, que afetam a fração volumétrica de austenita na junta soldada. O modo pelo qual o material é transferido no arco determina a estabilidade do processo e afeta fortemente a qualidade/geometria do cordão. O presente trabalho tem como objetivo estudar o formato do cordão de juntas soldadas do UNS S82441 comparando-o com os tipos de formato de onda da corrente de soldagem. Foram utilizados os processos MIG/MAG convencional, pulsado e curto-circuito controlado na realização de cordões de solda em chapas de dimensões de 100x300x6,1 mm com material de adição de arame tubular de núcleo metálico segundo a norma AWS A5.22 e gás de proteção com 98%Ar + 2%CO2. O metal de base foi caracterizado macroestruturalmente. Nas juntas soldadas foram realizadas macrografias para obtenção das características geométricas. O ataque eletrolítico foi efetuado com ácido oxálico 10%. Os resultados mostraram que a maior penetração e largura do cordão ocorreram para o MIG/MAG pulsado. O valor para a penetração foi de 4,3 mm e da largura 11,2 mm.

Wood cribs are used extensively by the mining industry to stabilize mine openings. While the cost per crib is relatively low, their extensive use can result in annual mine costs of over $1 million. In an effort to improve the utilization of these supports and to reduce ground control hazards, the U.S. Bureau of Mines has developed engineering methods to assist mine operators in wood-crib design and employment. Design and employment criteria are established based on the strength, stiffness, and stability of the crib structure in relation to the load conditions imposed by the mine environment. Models have been developed based on full-scale tests in the USBM's Mine Roof Simulator that compute the capacity of wood cribs of various configurations and material constructions as a function of displacement of the crib structure due to roof-and-floor convergence. These models permit the comparison of the loading characteristics and costs of employment of different crib designs, and in conjunction with roof behavior models, provide a means to determine the optimum design and employment strategy.

With a worldwide growing population the demand for higher living standards, food and the development of new technology is rapidly rising. To allow for a continuous growth, larger quantities of minerals and raw materials are needed at a faster pace. Different methods have been developed to access or tap ore more quickly, such as improved drill and blast operations, mechanical mining methods using equipment such as roadheaders (RH), longwall miners and other technical equipment. Another possibility to access and develop mines faster is the use of a tunnel boring machine (TBM).The historical usage of TBMs is surprisingly long, but the opportunity for technology adoption by the majority of worldwide mining companies remains largely untapped. Dozens of full face TBMs have been used by mines around the world, including two that will begin operation soon in Australia. TBMs have been used to safely and rapidly gain access to the orebody, or to expand access to the orebody to increase output by running a TBM along the edge of the orebody for several kilometres. These machines have also been used for ventilation and for conveyor tunnels for ore removal. They have been used to quickly excavate long and winding declines giving access to an orebody at several levels in a short period of time.Tunnel boring technology can be used for mine declines, mine access tunnels and all sorts of different mine designs and set-ups. TBM technology simply needs to be adapted to the mine conditions and, if manufacturers are involved early on in the planning process for mine development, the operation can be very successful. In some cases, historically typical mine designs may need to be re-thought.One mine, the Stillwater Platinum mine in Nye, Montana, is currently employing its fourth TBM in 25 years. Two were used to create tunnels running alongside the orebody, rapidly expanding access to the orebody in many locations for increased output. Two were used to create parallel access tunnels to a mine expansion at the East Boulder orebody; one tunnel is for conveyor haulage and the other for vehicular access. TBMs have been employed successfully many times to rapidly drive vehicular decline tunnels to multiple mine levels, such as at the San Manuel – Magma Copper mine in the USA. While TBM technology may not seem to be optimal for every mine, these success stories show that the method can provide vast benefits for the right projects.Early use of TBMs in extremely hard rock metal mines, in the 1960s and 1970s, had limited success since performance was low. However there have been great improvements made over the years in the strength of rock which can be excavated by TBMs with high performance. Other important improvements involve the provision of a safe work environment, safely and rapidly supporting the rock and predicting geology ahead of the TBM.This paper will briefly note the more than 20 TBM mining projects and highlight some notable successes. It will then go on to give a status report on the two active TBM mining projects in Australia and the difference between a TBM operation versus other excavation methods such as drill and blast (D&B) or RH excavation.CITATION:Rauer, M, 2014. Due to their ability to produce high-resolution images of the subsurface to great depths, seismic surveys provide critical inputs to almost all oil and gas exploration projects. However, with some notable exceptions, seismic surveys have rarely been used in mineral exploration. In the past, this was due to both technical and financial reasons. Significant developments on both fronts mean that seismic surveys can now offer substantial benefits to mineral exploration and mining, and surveys conducted for exploration can provide important data sets for mine planning over the life of a mining project.We present case history data that show that seismic surveys can greatly assist with mapping the 3D distribution of lithologies and alteration and, in favourable circumstances, directly detect mineralisation in and around mineral systems. As a result of their high spatial sampling density, seismic surveys are also highly effective at mapping structures that can remain undetected or poorly characterised by drilling alone. These structures may host or provide important vectors to mineralisation. They can also be particularly important when planning shafts, raise bores, declines, stopes and open pit walls. A further benefit of seismic surveys is that they can remotely provide information on geotechnical rock parameters that are used for rippability, slope stability, blasting and ground support.CITATION:Turner, G, Urosevic, M, Pridmore, D and Dwyer, J, 2015. As ocorrências recentes de terremotos em diversos países têm incentivado o desenvolvimento de vergalhão com características sísmicas, ou seja, que apresente elevada resistência mecânica sem que a ductilidade seja deteriorada. Este trabalho propôs uma abordagem investigativa dos principais fenômenos metalúrgicos atuantes no processo de laminação a quente de vergalhão em rolo Ø20 mm. Foi utilizado um modelo matemático de evolução microestutural com equações capazes de prever a quantidade de elementos microligantes ao longo do processo, a cinética de precipitação e o comportamento do tamanho de grão austenítico durante todo o tempo de laminação. Os resultados industriais de microestrutura e propriedades mecânicas convergiram com os resultados previstos pelo modelo. Com combinação do modelo matemático com testes industriais foi possível obter vergalhão com limite de escoamento superior a 600 MPa e alongamento de 15 %.

Starting in 1980, a committee of the National Research Council studied the question of why some underground coal mines are safer than others and what could be done to improve the ones with poorer performance. The results indicated that safety is improved by management commitment to safety, by cooperation between labor and management on safety matters, and by quality training of employees and managers. Younger mines have higher accident frequencies, but are less likely to be killed or permanently disabled by a lost-time accident. Methods for improving safety performance are proposed.

AN unusual engineering achievement in the Gulf Coast last year was the drilling of a wildcat well in the swamps of Louisiana, using direct current. More unusual was the fact that it was necessary to house a diesel engine and generator on a barge in order to supply power. The remoteness of the well made it necessary to transport living quarters and drilling equipment to the location by means of barges, and involved the digging of a canal from a lake to the location, approximated one mile. The drilling equipment used on this well consisted of two generating units, each having one 210-hp. six-cylinder @$-in. bore type VDMA, 600 r.p.m. diesel engine, direct connected to a type CD-169, 125-kw., 250-volt direct current generator, which in turn is direct connected to a type CD-105, 15-kw. 250-volt exciter. One of these motors operates the draw works, one the mud pump, and one a duplicate spare. The generating equipment on the barge was approximately 250 ft. from the derrick, the control wires being brought from the derrick to the generator barge enclosed in a standard fire hose. This is an original idea for confining the con- 11.01 wires in one cable; obtaining minimum space and ample protection. Both control and power lines were suspended on poles. This well was at Lake Grande Ecaille Dome, which was located by seismograph in 1928. Fig. 1 shows the derrick, power barge and living quarters where direct G. E. current was used with rotary drilling equipment.

High pressure grinding has been introduced into many grinding applications. The high pressure grinding roll offers capacity increases of existing plants and savings in operating costs. Also metallurgical advantages could be achieved. The first high pressure grinding roll in a copper mine was commissioned in Arizona in July 1995. This paper provides information about the operating experience gathered during the first months of operation. The current flowsheet will be described as well as further options for plant arrangements.

Most of the secondary and low grade zinc raw materials cannot be treated successfully by either conventional roasting - leaching - electrowinning (RLE) process or even by atmospheric direct leaching process. The problems arising especially from high impurity content of these raw materials can be effectively solved by implementation of the solvent extraction process. The utilization of solvent extraction process has been demonstrated by Outotec with raw materials like Waelz oxide, crude zinc oxide and zinc containing concentrator tailings. Based on batch and continuous test work it has been shown that SHG quality zinc can be produced even from the lowest grade raw materials. Impurity control in the solvent extraction process has been examined. The solvent extraction process is the key feature of the whole zinc plant for such raw materials. However, design of the entire zinc process including neutralization and bleed treatment is important for optimization of investment and operation costs of the plant. Very careful evaluation of the zinc process with modern simulation tools is essential. The optimized Outotec zinc process ensures a sustainable and profitable process containing minimal effluent and requiring little residue treatment.
