1. This investigation shows that the most important beds in Claiborne County, from the standpoint of present production and reserves, are the Coal Creek and Jellico. Together, they contain 69 percent of the known recoverable reserves in the county. Reserves in five other beds are tabulated in this report; in order of quantity of reserves, they are: Blue Gem, Lower Pioneer, Pewee, Big Mary, and Rex. 2. Known measured and indicated reserves in all beds, based on a minimum thickness of 14 inches and on 1,800 short tons per acre-foot of coal in place, are estimated to be 60 million tons, as of January 1, 1953. Of this total, 55 million tons is in beds 28 inches and more thick. Areas in each bed were omitted from the estimate because available data relative to the bed characteristics are too meager to permit making an estimate that conforms with the definitions of measured and indicated coal adopted for this study. Should future drilling or development prove reserves in these areas, such reserves should be added to the total estimated reserves.

The presence of enargite (Cu3AsS4) is problematic in gold processing because it is environmentally hazardous due to its arsenic content but also because it is double refractory causing both cyanide and oxygen consumption to increase. Selective leaching and treatment of the arsenic would prove advantageous prior to applying conventional gold leaching methods. The reactivity of enargite samples from Butte, Montana and Quiruvilca, Peru were spectroelectrochemically studied under alkaline conditions, pH range of 8-13, using Raman spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry. Raman spectra of the surface were collected during and after voltammograms were potentially cycled in order to determine and compare surface species against theoretical EH-pH diagrams determined from mass-balanced thermodynamic calculations using StabCal software. Under slightly oxidizing conditions, covellite (CuS) peaks were found in a short matter of time, above ~100mV vs SHE for pH 9-13, suggesting arsenic leaching specifically occurred. At longer conditioning times, elemental sulfur was observed and tended to passivate the surface. The presence of sulfur suggests that copper was eventually leached. By operating above pH 12, under slightly reducing conditions near -300mV vs SHE, arsenic can be selectively leached as thioarsenate (AsS43-) or thiosulfate (AsO43-) without sulfur formation.

Industrial grinding machines used in the mineral processing industries are mostly of the tumbling mill type. These mills exist in various types: ball, rod, pebble, autogenous, and semi-autogenous. Balls and rods are traditionally media shapes used in the tumbling mills. In resent years, as an alternative to balls, grinding charges with various shapes are being used. Cylpebs are slightly tapered cylindrical grinding charges with length equaling diameter, and all the edges being radiused. Cylpebs of equal diameter and length have 50% greater surface area and 45% greater weight than balls of the same material. In addition, they have 9% higher bulk density than steel balls, or 12% higher bulk density than cast balls. An important advantage of cylpebs over balls is that cylpebs produce narrower granulometric distribution due to their shapes. However, some discrepancies were found in the literature regarding the milling performance of cylpebs in comparison with balls (Chi, 2004). In recent studies, Chi (2004) has provided detailed information on cylpebs and has compared these to balls in relation to media mass, size distribution, surface area, and input specific energy. Ipek (2006) has investigated the effects of cylpebs and balls with equal mass and surface area on the breakage rate of quartz, using cylpebs and balls separately. Similarly, Lameck and Moys (2006) have investigated the effects of balls and worn balls on breakage rate of material using worn balls as grinding environment. However, no study has attempted to investigate the effects of grinding environment other than balls on the brekage distribution. As indicated by Prasher (1987), the breakage distribution function is independent of the following variables in ball mills: hold-up (Mika et al., 1967; Kelsall et al. 1969), mill speed and ball load (Herbst and Fuerstenau, 1972), media load and ball density (Kelsall et al., 1973), mill diameter (Malghan and Fuerstenau, 1976), and powder charge (Shoji et al. 1980). The aim of the present paper is to compare the effects of cylpebs and balls on the breakage distribution function of quartz with respect to same mass and same surface area. BACKGROUND Comminution as a rate process is called kinetic approach. Studies on the kinetic approach are reviewed by Oner (2001). Oner states that grinding kinetics are based on studies by Kolmogorov in 1941 and that Robert (1950) is the first to suggest this approach. Later, Melzak, Loeveday, and Reid have improved the grinding kinetics equation; and, Austin and Lynch have conducted two basic studies on the analytical solutions of these equations. Considering the results of studies comparing the size reduction mechanisms, it has been accepted that breakage constitutes of two operations. These two basic operations, first defined by Epstein (1948), are those of selection of material for breakage and the distribution of breakage material to particle sizes smaller than the initial size (Lynch, 1977). Epstein defined the two operations as: ? Pn(y), the probability of breakage of a particle size in the nth step of the breakage process. ? F(x,y), the cumulative distributions by weight of particles of size x<y arising from the breakage of a unit mass of a size y. Probability of breakage is called a selection or a breakage-rate function (Si). Characteristics size distribution after breakage is called a breakage distribution or appearance function (Bi,j). Due to the difficulties in representing particle size distributions mathematically and constantly, the batch equation based on particle size fraction is suggested. Thus, as is the case in breakage distribution and specific rate of breakage, the breakage parameters were defined by batch grinding experiments conducted in laboratories (Oner, 2001). When effective breakage occurs in the mill, the breakage of material with single feed size fraction usually fits first order grinding kinetics and the specific rate of breakage values can be calculated through the slope of semi-log plot. The values of the breakage distributions are deduced from the size distributions at short grinding times where there is mainly size 1 material breaking and only small amount of smaller sizes to rebreak (Austin et. al., 1984). B values can be calculated by using BII. [ ] where j is the top size of the charge, Pi(t) is the cumulative percent undersize of i th size interval at the short grinding time which gives no more than about 30% broken out of the top size interval. Cumulative primary breakage distribution, Bi,j, is also defined in an empirical form by [ ] where xi is the top size and Bi,j is the weight fraction of primary breakage products. The parameters F, ? and ß define the size distribution of the material being ground. On plotting size versus Bi,j on log scale, the slope of the lower portion of the curve gives the value of ?, the slope of the upper portion of the curve gives the value of ß, and F is the intercept as in Fig.1. All methods of deep foundation construction present challenges to the contractor and engineer that vary according to the method employed, and the geotechnical conditions in which it is being used. Augered-Cast-In-Place (ACIP) piles are generally regarded as one of the most challenging, because the construction method precludes the use of traditional shaft inspection and quality control techniques. Application of Nondestructive Test (NDT) methods can provide quality control for ACIP shafts that traditional methods cannot, but each NDT method has limitations. These make some NDT methods unsuitable for use on ACIP shafts, and may limit the effectiveness of others, depending on geotechnical conditions. To help contractors and engineers working with ACIP piles select the test method most appropriate to specific site conditions, this paper presents a summary of the major NDT methods currently available, and reviews their capabilities with respect to the unique conditions presented by ACIP pile construction. Case histories illustrate how a combination of careful method selection, skilled data interpretation, and experienced engineering judgment have resolved problems and ensured quality in foundation construction by discriminating between potentially serious defects, and those that are unlikely to be significant.

Managers always look for systems with minimum hazards. The hazards create problems for performance of projects. The largest and most important hazards of working underground mine can be related to health, safety and environmental, because if one of these sectors be in hazard, maybe lead to close mine. Failure mode and effects analysis (FMEA) is a widely used quality improvement tool to identify the potential failure modes for measuring reliability of a product or a process. FMEA is performed by developing a risk priority number (RPN), which is the product of severity, occurrence, and detection ratings. On the other hand, with regard to uncertainty in the decision-making, fuzzy theory will be able to model this uncertainty. Fuzzy FMEA provides a tool that can work in a better way with vague concepts and without sufficient information than conventional FMEA. This article by using Fuzzy FMEA and based on HSE criteria evaluate hazards of Parvade No. 1 Mine in Tabas Coal Mine. The results demonstrate the most hazardous parameter is rock burst in this mine.

The Western Mining Resource Center (WMRC) at the Colorado School of Mines (CSM) received a grant from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) to perform a study that will help reduce the amount of respirable dust generated from the cutting of coal. The study is based upon laboratory testing and field experience. This information is being used to develop a new cutterhead design in conjunction with Joy Mining Machinery. The new cutterhead design is being evaluated with existing computer models developed at CSM. The new continuous miner cutterhead will be tested at the Twenty Mile Coal Company’s Foidal Creek Mine. Baseline testing with the current cutterhead will also be performed. This paper presents laboratory test results, design methodology, and test results performed to date.

A novel synthesis is described for the preparation of supported gold catalysts for low-temperature CO oxidation. The novel route is a variation of the inverse co-precipitation method and requires amphoteric metal hydroxides, with zinc and aluminium hydroxides chosen. Catalysts were prepared by inverse co-precipitation (ICPa) and by the novel route (ICPb) and tested for CO oxidation at 60ºC. Preliminary results showed the novel route to be superior to ICPa; the catalysts prepared by ICPb showed higher catalytic activities. The effect on catalytic activity of parameters such as pH, calcination temperature, washing of precursor and calcined catalysts and ageing was investigated. A preparation pH of 9 and a Zn to Al mass ratio of 3 proved to be optimal. It was possible to remove residual chloride by washing thereby enhancing catalyst performance. Ageing and Mg citrate addition were also shown to improve catalyst performance. Characterization of the catalysts revealed that better activities were obtained when the support was more crystalline and had a higher surface area. The presence of carbonate-containing species in the support decreased catalytic activity. 197Au Mössbauer Spectroscopy revealed the presence of Au3+ when catalysts were heat-treated at temperatures of 200ºC and below. Catalysts calcined at 400º had 75% of the gold present as Au0, with the remaining gold present as Au3+.

Caving is a mass mining method that is normally applied to large, low grade orebodies because of its low production cost and high capacity. However, equipment breakdown and poor draw management can cause mining costs to exceed that of all other mining methods. One way to minimize the effect of disruptions in the mining cycle is to use Mixed Integer Linear Programming (MILP) for long-term scheduling. This paper describes a MILP goal program which has the dual objectives of minimizing deviation from the ideal draw profile while achieving a production target. Schedule optimization is performed using a life of mine approach in which all production periods are optimized simultaneously. The underlying assumption being that material mixing in the short-term (between monthly optimization cycles) has a minimal effect on the long-term state of the panel. Schedule optimization is carried out using six general constraint types to model and control production. The constraint types define: deviation from ideal practice, panel state, material flow conservation, production quality, material flow capacity and production control. These constraints define production targets and drive production toward the ideal profile while maintaining correct mining practice. Application of the model using production scheduling data for a De Beers kimberlite mine. It is shown how different production control constraints regulate production from individual drawpoints as well as recovery of the ideal panel profile by implementing an optimised draw schedule.

This paper describes the basic requirements for the utilization of belt air to ventilate working sections at remote locations in relation to the main fans. It highlights the risks involved, potential problems, and the provisions that must be followed by mine operators for the safe use of belt air. The paper also presents a brief review of the current regulations, conveyor belting tests, atmospheric monitoring system requirements, and the experience gained by mine operators to utilize the belt entries to ventilate remote working sections or areas where mechanized equipment is being installed or removed. The paper concludes with a set of recommendations with respect to the utilization of belt air and the composition of belt material in under-ground coal mines.

Coal mine bursts have represented a major hazard for U.S. mining operations for more than 90 years. During this time, many prevention controls have been developed and tested. This paper reviews 11 prevention control techniques. Although coal mine bursts are not common events in most underground coal mines, their occurrence almost always requires a change in mining practice. Over the many years of dealing with these hazards, specialized requirements for layouts and novel extraction sequences have been developed on a site specific basis. The keys to mitigating risks are to properly assess the coal burst hazards and to possess the knowledge and skills to prevent or remediate their occurrence.

For small particles of niekel flotation eoncentrate (av. size 50 pm) the predominant heat transfer mechanism under suspension smelting conditions, prior to ignition, is conduction from the gas and not radiation from nearby hot bodies. Results of laboratory tests using gas temperatures 380-700&#176;C and furnace wall temperatures 380-1100&#176;C were in accord with heat transfer theory. In practieal flash smelters earlier ignition, and hence better utilization of the space in the shaft, would result from introduetion at the top of the shaft of gases hotter than the ignition temperature of 500-600&#176;C.

To provide insights for the optimization of ventilation systems for U.S. underground coal mines facing both methane control and spontaneous combustion issues, a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) study was conducted to model the potential for spontaneous heating in longwall gob areas. A two longwall panel district using a bleeder ventilation system with a stationary longwall face was simulated. The permeability and porosity profiles for the longwall gob were generated from a geotechnical model and were used as inputs for the CFD modeling. In this study, the effect of methane emissions from the mined coal seam, including the longwall face and overlying rider seam reservoirs on the gob gas distribution was considered. The spontaneous heating is modeled as the low-temperature oxidation of coal in the gob using kinetic data obtained from previous laboratory-scale spontaneous-combustion studies. Unsteady state simulations were conducted, and the effects of the coal’s apparent activation energy and reaction surface area on the spontaneous heating process were also examined.1

Construction vibrations may adversely affect surrounding buildings and their effects range from human discomfort and disturbance of sensitive devices to visible structural damage. There is no unique conclusion regarding the effect of construction vibrations at every site. Measurement is usually made to monitor vibrations and control them with the vibration thresholds for disturbance of sensitive objects as well as damage to structures. To prevent potential litigation and mitigate the vibration effects on sensitive devices, people and structures, it is necessary to manage and minimize vibration problems before the beginning of construction activities or installation of vibrating machine foundations, and during construction. Pre-construction damage survey and engineering vibration investigations, including the prediction of anticipating vibrations, have to be made at most construction sites in advance of construction activities. Vibration monitoring and control have to be provided during construction. The instrumentation feedback of vibration prediction, monitoring and control provide the basis for choice of measures to prevent or mitigate vibration problems and settlement damage hazards.

Two house trailers and a modem modular house, all pillar-supported with cantilevered perimeters, were monitored for structural response to vibrations from surface coal mine blasts. Due to the large blast site distances, peak particle velocities measured in the ground beside the houses did not exceed 0.32 ips, and airblasts did not exceed 106 dB. However, the structures responded significantly to the ground vibrations, with maximum high-comer amplification factors as high as 8.5 in the horizontal directions. Vertical structural responses were as high as 10 times the vertical peak particle velocities in the ground, but appeared to be driven more by horizontal ground motions. No measurable airblast responses were observed. The natural frequencies of the structures ranged from 5 to 10 Hz.

The Coast Range subarea of the Juneau Mining District (JMD) extends from the Canadian border north of the community of Skagway, southerly to Tracy Arm. It is bounded by the international boundary on the north and eastern edges. The Ferebee Glacier and Lynn Canal mark the western boundary, extending south to the Berners Bay region. From Berners Bay south, the western boundary is the eastern boundary of the Juneau Gold Belt (fig. E-l). The city of Skagway (fig. E-2) is the only developed community within the confines of the subarea. Skagway was originally established as a port for the Klondike gold rush of 1898. Recently, Skagway has gained prominence as a port for shipping goods into and mineral products out of Yukon Territory (fig. E-3). Skagway has also developed a thriving tourist industry based on its Alaskan traditions. The community of Skagway maintains a paved airstrip which is suitable for use by small multi-engine aircraft. Several regional air carriers serve Skag-way with frequent scheduled flights, especially during the summer months. Helicopter charter services are available from Skagway during the summer months.

Drilled shafts are widely adopted as the foundation for sound walls. However, there has been a lack of uniformity in design and analysis methods and design criteria, in terms of factor of safety against ultimate capacity failure as well as the allowable deflection. In order to establish a uniform design methodology for the drilled shafts supporting sound walls in cohesive and cohesionless soils, respectively, a database of full-scale lateral load tests on fully instrumented drilled shafts was collected. Based on the compiled database, existing design methods and design criteria of laterally loaded drilled shafts were evaluated. Broms method and COM624P (or LPILE) are suggested as the design methods for drilled shafts supporting sound walls in both cohesive and cohesionless soils. Additionally, the corresponding design criteria, including factor of safety and permissible deflection, for both design methods are recommended. Two full-scale lateral load tests on fully instrumented drilled shafts were subsequently conducted in Colorado to further verify the design recommendation. A comprehensive geotechnical investigation program was also carried out at the two new lateral load test sites that included pressuremeter test, SPT, as well as laboratory triaxial consolidated undrained tests and direct shear tests on the soil samples taken from the lateral load test sites. The test results obtained at these two load test sites were employed to validate the recommended geotechnical design and geotechnical testing methods for the drilled shafts supporting sound walls.

Hydraulic stowing, which is being practiced in several major coal producing countries to deal with adverse mining conditions, usually permits almost 100% coal recovery from underground mines with minimal and controlled surface subsidence. It can be implemented in the US coal mines to reduce the severe effect of land subsidence and at the same time improve the cost of coal production, both of which are major setbacks for the coal industry in the USA
