U.S. Steel Uncovers Massive Iron Ore Deposits in Nevada United States Steel Corporation has confirmed that mineral investigation in Lyon County, Nevada. has been under way since 1960. Confirmation followed press reports of a statement attributed to a Nevada State inspector of mines to the effect that the Corporation has found a major iron ore deposit that may also contain copper ill West Central Nevada. Drillings over the years in a number of locations have indicated extensive iron ore bodie containing a possible quarter of a billion tons of ore of a basically magnetite composition. analyzing less than 40% iron, which would require beneficiation for commercial use. Some of these deposits are deep- lying while others would permit open pit mining. These bodies contain copper in quantities of approxiimately 0.3%. More recent drilling in another area has disclosed evidence of additional deeply-lying deposits of a lower fe content but with more promising indications of copper. A realistic estimate of fe and cu ore reserves cannot be made until more drilling is completed.

The Bureau of Mines is investigating the use of complex gas mixtures, such as would be produced by coal gasification, for reducing iron oxide pellets. A semiempirical model was developed to predict a priori the reduction rate of an iron oxide pellet in a laboratory tube furnace with simulated coal gases at a total pressure of 1 atm. The model uses partial pressures of H2, CO, CO2, CH4 (methane), water vapor, and a temperature-dependent term to predict the rate of reaction. The reduction rate (weight loss per unit of time) was determined with a thermo-gravimetric apparatus (TGA) in the temperature range of 800° to 1,100° C. The ranking of the reductants, in order of decreasing reducing potential, is H2, CO, and CH4 at temperatures between 800° and 1,000° C; however, CH4 became a better reductant than CO at 1,100° C. Water vapor did not decrease the reduction rate as much as did CO2, Carbon deposition was observed at temperatures below 1,000° C with gas mixtures with high CO and low H2 concentrations. With low-Btu gas at 900° C, over 90 pct of the iron oxide was reduced to iron in less than 3 h. This com-pares with a reduction time of 1.5 h with medium-Btu gas and 1 h with reformed natural gases.

The process under investigation is the large-scale production of phosphorus. Gravity delivers the feed, consisting of pelletised apatite, coke and silica (in the form of gravel), to a submerged arc furnace through ten, evenly distributed feed chutes ensuring constant packed bed volume. Within this packed bed, solid-gas reactions are dominant in generating the gaseous product. These reactions, as well as the packed bed itself, were the main focus in the development of a fully three-dimensional CFD model in which fluid flow and energy distribution are represented as functions of chemical reactions, heating and melting of material and heat losses. The associated complex process interactions necessitated the creation of two process-specific, user-developed models that integrates accurate, thermodynamical data with computational fluid dynamics calculations, as well as reaction kinetics. The boundary conditions are provided by industrial measurements, and the key model parameters of reaction kinetics were obtained by laboratory experiments for different feed mixtures. Thirteen temperature probes installed inside the refractory lining of the furnace especially for this project allowed parameter fitting and validation to be guided within the constraints of real measurements. Simulation results reveal a thin, dome-shaped, reductive zone where conditions are optimum for maximum phosphorus recovery, as well as evidence of a thermal reserve zone similar to an ironmaking blast furnace located above this reduction zone. When compared to actual operating data, the CFD model can successfully predict the specific power consumption, the phosphorus in the slag and gaseous product flowrate under given operating conditions. This CFD model forms part of a larger project that aims to create a Dynamic-CFD hybrid control model.

The DC Water and Sewer Authority's Long Term Control Plan includes tunnels, sewer separation, pumping station rehabilitation and green infrastructure to reduce combined sewer overflow (CSO) discharges to the District waterways. The Northeast Boundary Tunnel is a deep, large sewer tunnel that will reduce CSO discharges; signifi- cantly mitigate known chronic flooding in the Northeast Boundary drainage area and improve the water quality of the Anacostia River. This paper presents the unique combination of Owner and Contractor perspectives of the entire Project from conception through procurement, execution, and contract management, providing lesson learned, chal- lenges encountered, and solutions implemented to deliver the Project successfully.

THE Kingsport formation, a part of the Knox dolomite of Ordovician age, is composed of 538 ft of dolomitc and limestone. Numerous bands, layers and nodules of chert, arenaceous and shale zones are present. The characteristics displayed by these features have been useful in mapping, prospecting and mining. Perhaps a better understanding of the origin of these zones will increase their usefulness. Introduction The presence of numerous bands, nodules, and irregular bodies of chert within the Kingsport formation in the Mascot locality has long been recognized. Oder and Miller1 mention the general characteristics, but do not deal with the chert occurrences in detail. When the occurrence of chert is studied in fresh exposures underground, a variety of characteristics is noted which has been useful in correlation and in detailing the sub-surface stratigraphy. Although the writer has no desire to enter into a controversy over the origin of chert, many observations have been made of its local characterigtics. A detailed stratigraphic section is included which shows the position of the individual horizons discussed in the following paragraphs. The term "chertification" has been adopted from Fowler and Lyden2 for use here. It refers to the replacement of lime- stone by introduced silicic acid. The writer uses it to refer to the occurrencc of introduced or original chert in limestone and dolomite. In this writing "syngenetic chert" refers to chert which has been deposited contemporaneously with the enclosing limestone or dolomite. Also, it is considered to include interstitial silica shown by chemical analysis and insoluble residues. The term "epigenetic" is applied to all chert which has been introduced after consolidation of the rocks in which it occurs, regardless of the nature of the depositing solutions. Syngenetic Chert It is the belief of the author that a large percentage of the chert found in the Kingsport formation is syngenetic. The widespread occurrence of similar nodules and bands of chert in the same horizon far from one another and far from areas of deformation or alteration of the enclosing rocks is difficult to explain by infiltration of the silica after compaction of the enclosing rocks. When chert of this type does occur near zones of movement it is likely to be involved in faulting and brecciation which indicates that it was deposited prior to deformation. Older Epigenetic Chert There are several occurrences of nodules in the Kingsport which seem to be epigenetic as pointed out in the following examples: A cherty zone occurs 26 ft above the o bed (Fig =). "Wet stirred milling is one of the most effective grinding methods in producing very fine powders in large scale production, but it is a very energy-intensive process, especially when pigments or even nanosize particles are produced. Therefore, optimization of the process parameters is important. The specific energy consumption is a function of stress energy, which describes the effect of tip speed and media characteristics on grinding, and is related to the number of stress events during milling. In effective grinding, a large number of stress events are necessary. The stirrer configuration influences the number of stress events and their intensity, because the motion of the media and the suspension are caused by a rotating stirrer. The effect of three different stirrer types: a pin, disc and blade stirrer, on the grinding rate, i.e. product fineness and specific energy were investigated in this study with a batch laboratory stirred mill with two tip speeds. The material used in the experiments was calcium carbonate. The results obtained with the smaller tip speed showed approximately similar grinding rates and energy consumption for all stirrer types. When looking in closer detail, the blade stirrer seemed to give the finest product with all grinding times compared to the pin and disc stirrers, which both produced almost the same product fineness with the same grinding times. The specific energy consumption was the smallest with the disc stirrer, but not very big differences were obtained. With a higher tip speed, greater differences occurred both in grinding rates and specific energy consumption. The blade stirrer was the most effective in grinding, and the pin stirrer the next. The net energy consumption for the blade and pin stirrers was almost the same, but it was slightly higher for the disc stirrer."

A survey of existing and developing field permeability test methods was conducted in order to identify and specify capable methods to be used in feasibility investigations or performance monitoring for in situ leaching of ore deposits. Geologic settings of leachable deposits are discussed, as well as representative techniques used for the in situ leaching operation. Subsurface investigation techniques including drilling, core recovery, and down-hole inspection methods relevant to field permeability investigations are discussed. Field experience is examined and capable field permeability test methods are identified. Specifications for test borehole preparation, test performance. and methods of analysis are given. The test methods are comparatively rated in a matrix with respect to costs ease of use, and data effectiveness' for a broad range of conditions. Well Pump and Packer test methods receive high ratings. Recommendations are made for needed developments in field permeability test methods and a comprehensive bibliography is given.

"Cigar Lake Mining Corporation is presently operating an underground test mine in northern Saskatchewan, with a view to developing a high grade uranium deposit. The mining test is intended to demonstrate that the innovative mining methods designed are safe and economical. Two vertical mining methods are considered for the test:• box hole boring from the lower level;• blind boring from the upper level.In both cases, it is anticipated to freeze the ground before excavation to ensure hole stability and limit the inflow of water. Special care will be taken to minimize radiation exposure of personnel.Remote controlled equipment will be used where applicable.The access to the orebody was an important component of the test. After shaft sinking to a depth of 500 m, development work commenced at the 420 level in fractured sandstone which was grouted to restrict the inflow of formation water. The drifting continued in a section of poorly consolidated sand, clay and sandstone; this area was frozen to allow stabilization prior to excavation. At the 480 level relatively little water was encountered in the altered basement gneiss and grouting was not necessary; however, extensive ground support was required in the soft ground areas."

Loading and hauling of ore and waste are the key operations of an opencast coal mine and entail a high operational cost. The productivity of a mine can be increased by reducing the cycle time of loading equipment as well as utilizing dumpers optimally. In this paper we discuss the impact of rock type, bucket fill factor, rock fragmentation, the height of the cut, and angle of swing of the bucket on shovel performance. A time study is conducted on shovels in an opencast coal mine with experimental blasts of rocks to assess the impact of different factors on the performance of the shovel. Based on the data, the authors applied multiple regression (MR) and artificial neural network (ANN) techniques to develop different models for the prediction of the shovel cycle time. Developed models are validated by comparing the predicted data with actual field data. With the help of the best model, the plausible fleet size is determined in order to utilize the shovel and dumper optimally and to improve the performance of shovel–dumper operation.

Plurigaussian simulation allows constructing lithofacies or rock type models that reproduce the contacts between facies in accordance with the geologist?s interpretation. Its implementation requires inferring the local facies proportions, but the uncertainty in the true proportions is not accounted for. The simpler model with constant facies proportions may not yield realistic results, due to the possibility of obtaining facies at locations where it is geologically unlikely to find them. This article presents a variation of the plurigaussian model, in which the facies proportions are represented by random fields. The realizations can be made conditional to soft geological informati onto account for local changes in the facies proportions. The model is illustrated via a case study of a porphyry copper deposit where four Gaussian random fields are simulated conditionally to drill hole data and to constraints on the probability of finding a given facies at specific locations (control points) in the deposit. Then the first two fields are truncated using the random thresholds defined by the last two, generating a three-facies model. The proposed random proportion model proves to be simple to use and to account for spatial variations of the geological characteristics and for the uncertainty in the facies proportions. Este trabalho estuda a obtenção do cobalto metálico a partir da redução de pós de óxido de cobalto (Co3O4) usando como agentes redutores o plasma frio de hidrogênio e o gás de hidrogênio. A redução a plasma foi realizada sob tensão de 540 V e largura do pulso na faixa de 140-170ms, e da mesma forma que na redução a gás foram usadas as seguintes condições: fluxo de 300 cm3/min de hidrogênio, pressão de 530 Pa, temperaturas de 250º, 300ºC, 350ºC e 380ºC e tempos de 10 a 120 min. Os resultados mostraram que o processo de redução ocorre em duas etapas: Co3O4?CoO?Co. Na parte mais externa das partículas parcialmente reduzidas verificou-se a presença de altas concentrações de cobalto e no centro das mesmas, altas concentrações de oxigênio, o que indica que a redução se dá da superfície para o núcleo. Constatou-se que em 300oC após 120 min é possível obter frações de metal reduzido aproximadas de 0,93 quando é utilizado o plasma frio de hidrogênio, enquanto o gás permite obter frações de apenas 0,3. A energia de ativação para a redução por plasma de hidrogênio é de 35,38 kJ/mol, ao passo que a associada ao gás de hidrogênio é de 90,79 kJ/mol.

"This work was carried out to determine the influence of rock properties and drilling machine parameters on the penetration rate at the SJ pit of Rössing Uranium Mine, Namibia. Rock properties (uniaxial compressive strength, tensile strength, and modulus of elasticity) of samples collected were determined in the laboratory. Drilling experiments were conducted in which feed pressure, air pressure, rotary speed, weight on the bit, and torque were varied to measure their effect on the penetration rate. The uniaxial compressive strength varied from 90–180 MPa for layered marble-quartzite and banded gneiss. Increases in feed pressure, weight on the bit, and rotary speed beyond the optimum level led to a decrease in penetration rate and caused the drill bit to ‘stall’. Results of the study revealed that penetration rate increases with an increase in the feed pressure and air pressure. After reaching a maximum value, the penetration rate begins to decrease despite increasing feed pressure. A very high torque causes the drill bit to stall, since the feed pressure is too high and the air pressure is not sufficient to remove the cuttings from blast-hole at maxium bailing velocities. The average penetration rate varied from 19 to 45 m/h for phase 2 of the pit, and from 17 to 68 m/h for phase 3. The optimum drilling machine parameters obtained in phase 2 and phase 3 were slightly lower than those currently being used at the mine. The trials of the optimum machine parameters will assist in reducing the cost of drilling, which varied from N$29.48 to N$36.31 per metre for the tricone bit. The drillability of rocks depends not only on the rock properties, but also on the drilling tools and operational variables. Rock properties and geological conditions are the uncontrollable parameters. Indian iron ores with less than 62 per cent Fe are currently unexploited, except for a few sectors which export them to foreign countries. It is anticipated that by 2012 the countryÆs domestic steel production is likely to rise to the tune of 60 million tonnes per annum. To meet this requirement, it is necessary to utilise not only the existing high-grade deposits but it is also necessary to look into exploiting the leftover iron ores of lower grades. Hence, reserves with Fe content 62 per cent and below (particularly the ores with In the present paper, an attempt has been made to beneficiate three different types of low-grade iron ores selected from three different parts (states) of the country. In the paper, alternative routes for beneficiation and effective utilisation have been tested using different techniques in the laboratory in an attempt to match their (Al2O3/SiO2) ratio after thorough characterisation and liberation studies. The paper also encompasses the geological formations, occurrences and distribution of Indian iron ores as well as highlighting the problems associated with the fines, possible metallurgical routes, and their market segregation from the perspective of end users.

The Goonyella Riverside Mine is located 30 km north of Moranbah in Central Queensland, Australia. Recent mining activities have exposed the north–south striking Kenya and Zimbabwe thrust Faults. These faults vertically offset coal seams by up to 25 m and locally thicken coal packages through imbrication of coal seams. The presence of back-thrusts add to the geotechnical complexity of maintaining highwall stability. The Kenya and Zimbabwe Faults have provided multiple challenges to the mining operation, with an unplanned additional 240 kt of coal tonnes being mined from imbrication of coals seams or from the refinement to local scale geological models. These additional coal tonnes have been either identified during the mining of the coal seam or just prior to overburden removal above the coal seam. These faults can also negatively impacted highwall stability with highwall failures, lowering the overall slope angle for pit designs and increasing stand-off distances for hazardous highwall conditions. Unmanned Aerial Vehicles are used to scan exposed highwalls and enable geological mapping via high-quality 3D images. Measure while drill data from drill and blast rigs can provide local-scale intersections of the faults and coal seams. Mine Geologists utilise these and other data sets to create localised geological models refined position of the fault planes and coal seams. These models are utilised by relevant mine site teams to ensure the safe and efficient mining of coal around these faults.

SULPHUR is a very well known mineral and apparently is produced in many places. It is engendered from an unctuous earthy and powerfully hot substance so that it is considered among experienced workers to bear a resemblance to the element of fire. This is called by these same men the masculine seed and the prime agent of Nature in the composition of metals. Because of its great dryness and heat it has, as experience shows, affinity with fire, which is easily introduced in it when brought near. And once introduced the fire is quenched only with difficulty before its unctuousness is wholly consumed. Although it shows itself to us of such a hot and dry nature, we must not think that sulphur is a substance so pure that it can stand by itself or that in order to attain its form it has no need of its portion and part of moisture like every other mixture. This is shown to us by its easy fusion, in which it resembles the metals. This thing is found in many places and in many varieties of color; some are white, others yellow and orange, and some others between gray and black. They also say that some red is found. It does not occur in that arrangement of veins like other minerals, but most liberal Nature makes whole mountains of it as is seen in the Aeolian islands, [26] near Sicily, in Etna or Moncibello which is the island of Sicily, at Pozzuoli, in the territory of Rome, in the Sienese domain at San Filippo, and in many other similar places. It is a substance that has a very strong odor and is most unpleasant to smell. It is very fixed in its substance so that it is never corrupted by time, by boiling, or by the moisture of water. For although it may stand in water a long time it never becomes soft nor does it ever decrease or increase in weight. It is brittle and easily crushed very fine. It is said that a trace of garlic rubbed on the mortar helps anyone who wishes to reduce it to impalpability. N OT so long ago, the discovery of an orebody took place only by accident. At the present time mineral deposits, even though concealed, may be revealed by their physical or geophysical characteristics, considered in connection with geological studies. Geophysical methods are based on sound, scientific principles and in no sense partake of the mysteries of "divining-rod " methods. Geophysical methods are divided into two main groups: Group I: Methods where fields of force surrounding mineral deposits are investigated (magnetic, gravitometric, electric) ; Group I1 : Methods where fields of force are applied (produced) and anomalies caused in these fields by mineral deposits are recorded (electric, seismic). By methods belonging to Group I, the investigation of the fields of force may be brought to an astonishing degree of accuracy by means of highly sensitive and delicate apparatus (torsion and magnetic balances) ; at least, in simple cases these methods have proved to be of great value.

"Mining companies have included quantifying uncertainty, or at least risk, as a requirement of project justification for many years. However, many times this process lags behind the traditional mine planning process and the results are rarely used to improve the plan. Nearly every parameter used in a mine plan is an estimate and the mine planning engineer should recognize, and even embrace, the inherent uncertainty in those parameters and its effect on their forecast results. While many of the uncertainties are beyond the scope of the traditional mine plan (e.g. global market uncertainty, socio-political uncertainty, environmental uncertainty), some uncertainties can, and should, be included in the mine planning process.Many mining engineers have incorporated techniques such as Monte Carlo Simulation or Discrete Element Simulation to understand the range of productivity that can be expected for an operation, but most still rely upon one estimated model for what is likely the critical component of technical uncertainty, the geologic resource. Modern geostatistical methods can provide multiple orebody realizations to provide a thorough unbiased picture of the geologic uncertainty. However, most traditional mine planning techniques are not formulated to allow for multiple (100-200) realizations of each material quality/grade parameter.Commercial software companies and research groups are progressing with development of tools that can incorporate geologic uncertainty, and even optimize extraction plans in the uncertain environment. Unfortunately, this author believes that a significant number of mining operations will not be able to adopt these techniques due to the computational requirements of the advanced techniques and the costs associated with implementing proprietary software. In an attempt to encourage mining engineers to embrace the inherent uncertainty in their mine plans, this article presents a cost-effective alternative that can be developed in-house, at any mine, to schedule mid- to long-term mine plans while continuously monitoring the uncertainty in the results. The aim of this article is that by demonstrating the usefulness of such a system, mining companies will encourage engineers, geologists and geostatisticians to find ways to incorporate this powerful data into their processes and procedures."
