"A carefully planned laboratory test program is the foundation for the successful development of a sulfide flotation process. In this paper, the development of a copper-molybdenum flotation process is described. However, the concepts discussed can be applied to most sulfide flotation systems and to many industrial minerals projects as well. Each step is examined, beginning with sample procurement and covering sample preparation, flotation test preparation grinding, scoping flotation tests for reagent scheme selection, rougher flotation parameter evaluation and cleaner circuit evaluation, through to locked-cycle testing and pilot plant design and operation. Ore variability and modeling to determine the response of various ore types to the optimum conditions established is also examined.IntroductionA carefully planned laboratory test program is essential for the successful development of any sulfide flotation process. These programs usually begin with a series of batch tests on several ore type composites to evaluate appropriate reagent schemes and delineate optimum rougher flotation conditions, such as primary grind size, flotation pulp density, flotation pulp pH and retention time. Cleaner parameters such as regrind size requirements, cleaner pH, pulp density and number of stages are then defined. Semicontinuous locked-cycle tests are performed using the parameters established in the batch tests to determine the effect of middling streams recirculation on flotation performance. The data generated and the experience gained in the locked-cycle tests may be used to design and operate a continuous pilot plant if relatively large amounts of concentrate are required for further process development, such as optimization of byproduct molybdenum production from bulk copper-molybdenum concentrate.A comprehensive ore variability program is undertaken to determine the response of various ore types to the optimum conditions established. These ore variability programs often test hundreds of samples in standardized batch rougher and cleaner tests to ensure that the orebody is well understood.This article describes the development of a copper-molybdenum flotation process, but the concepts discussed can be applied to most sulfide flotation systems and many industrial minerals projects. T. E. PURCELL, general chairman . of the local committee, opened the seventh meeting of the Fuels Division A.S.M.E. and the Coal Division A.I.M.E., at the William Penn Hotel, Pittsburgh, Oct. 28-29, by introducing Harry M. Moses, president, H. C. Frick Coke Co., who welcomed the 500 registrants to "our town." Mr. Moses, in his brief talk, declared that in the postwar period each of the new centers must have a reason for existence. Pittsburgh, he said, has no iron ore, or bauxite, and limestone is scattered and not near by; but Pittsburgh does have low-cost fuel within reasonable distance. Its problem is the economical utilization of the low-cost fuels that remain, as the high-quality fuels are gone. Mr. Moses expressed confidence in this group in the solution of the problem and looked forward to what they would do. Harold V. Coes, the first A.S.M.E. president to attend one of these conferences, responded. He thoroughly believed in these joint meetings - in the cross-fertilization of ideas. Each Division learns from the other. Mr. Purcell then turned the meeting over to J. E. Tobey who presided over the coal research session that followed.

"A supply of sustainably sourced rare earth elements (REEs) is critical for several high-tech industries, renewable energy technologies, and defense applications. Recent studies have shown that REEs exist in coal and coal combustion byproducts at elevated concentrations and in quantities that could meet domestic demand. Despite these promising findings, declines in rare earth prices, volatile commodity markets, and challenging geo-metallurgical conditions have jeopardized this potentially valuable REE resource. While the dilute REE concentrations inherently necessitate low-cost separation technologies, the ultimately operating cost threshold for economic extraction must be based on commodity price projections and market demand. In this paper, the micro-pricing principle is used to develop a rigorous economic model assessing the inherent value of REEs in coal materials. This model is based upon basket pricing of individual elemental oxides, and elemental distributions of coal samples from various basins. These results may be used to assess the economic viability of potential REE concentration and refining technologies INTRODUCTION Recent efforts by US Department of Energy (DOE) and the National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL) have suggested that rare earth elements (REEs) may exist in coal and coal byproducts at concentrations suitable for economic extraction and processing. While the knowledge of REE occurrence in coal material dates back over 50 years, recent supply restrictions and material criticality considerations have prompted a national interest to establish a sustainable domestic supply of REEs. REEs are not “rare” in the sense of crustal abundance; however, few natural processes lead to concentrated ore deposits. As a result, the elevated concentrations found in coal material may provide a potentially promising resource for these materials. While the term “rare earths” is often used to describe a singular concept, the 15 rare earth elements actually have varying and sometimes contrasting scarcity and cost profiles. Various authors have proposed classification systems to provide information on REE criticality (e.g. Seredin and Dai, 2012, Zhang et al., 2015). The most straightforward classification is provided on the basis of geochemistry with designations for “light”, “medium” and “heavy” rare earths. Light rare earths (those to the left of the periodic table: Ce, Pr, Nd, and Sm) tend to be more common and less valuable when compared to their medium (Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, and Y) and heavy (Ho, Er, Tm, Yb, and Lu) counterparts. While light rare earths are often found in traditional ore deposits at economic concentrations, the heavier rare earths are almost exclusively found as ion-absorbed clays (Seredin and Dai, 2012)."

The two best known graphical methods for presenting and comparing comminution data are obtained by linearising the Gates-Gaudin-Schuhmann and the Rosin-Rammler size distribution equations. It is shown that the Gates-Gaudin-Schuhmann equation can cause excessive congestion in the 50 per cent oversize range and that, overall, the Rosin-Rammler is a better procedure. Examples are given

FACTORS entering into the market value of coal are its grade, and the cost of labor, material, and capital. Reduction in these costs cannot be expected in the future, and it therefore follows that greater economy in their use must be accomplished if it is desired to hold the present markets; more tons of product per unit must be obtained in a given time from both men and material, and means devised for increasing the percentage of lump and domestic sizes. This paper is presented for the purpose of inviting discussion and stimulating thought in regard to the influence of methods of procedure and plans of mining, upon the quality of coal, the economical use of labor, material, and capital, and the cost of production. Even the better methods of the. present day leave much to be desired, and a review of the reasons and necessities for their use may be of value in pointing the way to more economical mining. The writer does not attempt to discuss untried methods of mining, but rather to state clearly and concisely a summary of the results obtained under the several methods of procedure that have been adopted. In some instances a high degree of concentration has been effected, and comparisons of the results obtained with the results of lesser degrees of concentration form an interesting study. It is believed that much may be accomplished in improving the quality, and in the more economical use of labor, material, and capital, by concentration, and it is to concentration in particular that your study is invited. The writer, who .has occasion to visit many mines, most of which ire under different management, has been inclined to the opinion that improvement has been retarded in many ways and that mining has not as yet been entirely freed from the early-day practices which were forced upon it.

A segment of high-pressure steel petroleum pipeline needed to be replaced on a hillside and beneath a waterway within an existing right-of-way containing multiple petroleum pipelines. The pipeline replacement required excavation of sedimentary rock to allow placement of the new pipe. As a result of an existing right-of-way limitation, steep slopes, and hard rock, blasting would be required as close as 7.8 meters (25 feet) from two operating pipelines.

O complexo Minas-Rio da Anglo American iniciou suas operações em agosto de 2014. A usina de filtragem produziu, em 2016, cerca de 15 milhões de toneladas secas de concentrado. O minério, explorado no município de Conceição do Mato Dentro (MG), passa pelas etapas de cominuição, classificação, concentração e separação sólido-líquido antes de ser bombeado por 529 km até o município de São João da Barra (RJ), onde é filtrado, estocado e embarcado para exportação. Quatorze filtros cerâmicos, com 144 m² de área de filtragem cada um, são responsáveis pelo último processo de produção do pellet feed. O início de operação foi marcado por um desempenho muito aquém do planejado. Diversos tipos de avaliações, como análises em microscópio ótico e contagem de bactéria, foram conduzidas e mostraram que o entupimento precoce dos poros do meio filtrante era o responsável pelo problema. Foram identificados 4 principais responsáveis pelo entupimento: material orgânico, sulfato de bário, partículas de concentrado de minério de ferro e óleo. Amostras de placas cerâmicas foram testadas em laboratório com diferentes reagentes para a limpeza dos poros entupidos. Análises químicas na solução resultante dessa lixiviação e/ou análise em microscópio dos corpos de prova indicavam a eficiência do reagente testado. Os mais promissores foram testados industrialmente. Por fim, o estabelecimento de uma nova rotina de limpeza das placas gerou uma melhora significava do desempenho da filtragem.

A tecnologia da fabricação de aços, nas últimas décadas, apresentou grandes avanços, os quais resultaram em melhorias da qualidade, principalmente no que se refere à remoção de inclusões. As inclusões podem ser responsáveis por prejudicar as propriedades mecânicas por meio da geração de trincas ou fraturas entre outros defeitos. O distribuidor do lingotamento contínuo também pode atuar na remoção destas partículas. A eficácia desta função do distribuidor demanda o conhecimento das características do escoamento do aço líquido de modo que se possa propor modificações na configuração do distribuidor. Esse conhecimento pode ser obtido mediante a utilização de modelos físicos para simular os fenômenos envolvidos. O objetivo deste trabalho é, a partir de um distribuidor com jato aberto, construído em acrílico e em escala 1:1, verificar o percentual de inclusões passantes pelo veio com ou sem a presença de bolhas. O trabalho foi executado com e sem tubo longo, sendo o tubo longo empregado para prevenir o arraste de ar para o interior do modelo. Os resultados foram obtidos por meio do ensaio de remoção de inclusões com o auxílio do ensaio de distribuição de tempos de residência. As variáveis utilizadas neste estudo são: presença bolhas e velocidade de lingotamento.

Increasing fuel prices, unavailabilty and high prices of tyres have imposed tremendous challenges for large open pit operations. Carajßs open pit mines, one of the largest iron ore projects in the world, has been particularly affected due to the high amount of giant trucks operating in this site. On the other hand, environmental constraints push the mining industry towards reductions in fossil fuels, noise and waste generation. As a feasible response to these requirements, an alternative mining method for open pit mining, aiming to reduce or even eliminate the need for trucks has been developed, based primarily on coal opencast continuous operations. This innovative approach for open pits involves the replacement of trucks by fully-mobile crushers, bench conveyors and ramp conveyors. Two different applications have been developed for exploiting waste and ore at Carajßs largest pit, named N4E. To make it possible, mine planning paradigms should be replaced leading to new conceptual design of open pits. This paper shows two case studies (waste and ore conceptual design) carried out at Carajßs mines to anticipate and put forward the future of open pit mining, proving that our industry would be greatly affected by this new way of exploitation, reducing thousands of tons of fossil fuels. Productivities can be enhanced and environmental performance greatly improved. In this approach mine automation can be easily implemented reducing operating costs and man's fatigue.

As the demand for natural gas as a prime global energy source continues to grow, the search for new sources of the fuel spreads into geographical areas that are more remote from the marketplace. Along with this comes the need for longer and ever more efficient pipelines. This requirement for higher value in natural gas transportation is satisfied to a large extent through the application of high strength technology and innovative design approaches that support increased design and operating pressures. This paper reviews the latest accomplishments and successes in these technologies for use in gas transmission. It also explores some of the technologies which are targeted for the future to allow the industry to achieve even higher benchmarks in reliability and cost-effectiveness. The central element in the theme of high strength technology for gas pipelines is that of high strength steel. From tensile strengths of Grade 359 a few decades ago, more and more operators are now specifying Grade 550 linepipe for their large diameter projects. As well, Grade 690 steel is operating successfully in limited transmission applications and Grade 825 has recently been installed. With the introduction of the latest high strength pipe comes the need for high strength fittings. The industry's first Grade 550 fittings were recently specified and installed on a project with Grade 825 line pipe. High strength materials can only be implemented successfully if compatible design and construction processes are in place. The latest developments in strain- and reliability based design will be described as well as the corresponding advancements in welding and inspection technology.

Significant cost and construction benefits were obtained from performing a bi-directional static load test prior to construction on the Russell Street Bridge Replacement project in Missoula, Montana. The project utilized 24 drilled shafts to support two three-span bridges across the Clark Fork River. A bi-directional static load test (“BDSLT”) was performed on a large-diameter production shaft to demonstrate construction methods and confirm design assumptions. Subsurface conditions consisted of gravel with sand to a depth of 20 feet (6.1 m), underlain by gravel with sand, silt, cobbles, and occasional boulders. The test shaft had a nominal diameter of 5.9 feet (1.8 m), and an embedded length of 75.5 feet (23.0 m). The geotechnical engineer of record and the BDSLT test engineer collaborated to optimize the BDSLT jack assembly location within the test shaft, determine appropriate instrumentation locations, and plan the test protocol. The maximum applied test load was 10,707 kips (47.6 kN). Significant benefits were obtained from performing the BDSLT test, including 1) reducing each production shaft’s length by using a higher LRFD resistance factor allowed by having performed the testing, 2) using test-determined unit shaft resistances to evaluate and accept two production shafts that may have otherwise required remediation, and 3) providing the Montana Department of Transportation (and other designers) with increased presumptive unit resistance values in the gravel/cobble/boulder deposits. PROJECT DESCRIPTION The project was constructed in Missoula, Montana for the Montana Department of Transportation (“MDT”). The original bridge was approximately 60 years old, and consisted of a two-lane, 420-foot-long (128-m), four-span, riveted steel plate girder design spanning the Clark Fork River. The bridge was due for replacement owing to its deteriorated state, and the need for increased traffic volume capability afforded by a four-lane structure. HDR was the structural engineer. The preferred bridge alternate was a 459-foot- long (140-m), three-span, welded steel plate girder design. The new bridge was designed to meet current standards in accordance with MDT bridge design and AASHTO LRFD criteria. The new bridge was constructed in phases to keep traffic open during construction.

The use of photogrammetry has greatly increased the accuracy of 3D mapping underground. However, this has not reduced the need or desire for geologists to produce plans and sections showing an interpretation of the mapped geology. At the Waihi Underground Gold Mine, a hybrid solution has been developed that utilises the accuracy of photogrammetry and mapping onto face photos with the CAD-based Deswik.MappingTM functions to create plan and section maps. These have the benefit of looking like traditional paper maps but are more spatially accurate and richly attributed with metadata that can be filtered and exported to downstream processes. Deswik.MappingTM is a tablet-based solution that allows the geologist to map digitally with a stylus. Automation is utilised for the updating of survey as-builts, approved designs, drill holes, geological mapping, vein interpretations and mine work areas, reducing the requirement to print out maps at various locations and scales. Having 3D mine software on a tablet device provides a wealth of features not available when using paper: scaling is a problem of the past; information can be turned on and off; features can be viewed in 3D; and measurements between points of interest can be calculated in 3D space, for example, between vein wireframes and drill hole sample information. A suite of custom scripts has been developed that take the spatially accurate, registered and attributed polyline data from photogrammetry scans and converts them to a geological mapping legend with vein textures, structural information, and lithological boundaries. These 3D maps can be plotted in plan or section view and satisfy the requirements of the most ardent paper map supporter.

The Huari-Huari ore body is located in Southern Bolivia, at an elevation of approximately 3,800 meters above sea level. The ore is a complex massive sulfide, slightly marmatitic sphalerite, in a fault fissure filled hypo- thermal vein in Paleozoic shales and quartzite-altered sandstone. The sphalerite has common associations with pyrite and quartz and is frequently intricately intergrown with stannite, chalcopyrite, and pyrrhotite. The sphalerite also contains numerous inclusions of pyrite, marcasite, galena, boulangerite, jamesonite, quartz, arsenopyrite, and cassiterite. A research program was undertaken to develop a flowsheet for the recovery of separate silver, zinc, and tin concentrates by selective flotation. Based on this experimental work and subsequent flowsheet development, engineering and construction of a 500 metric ton per day concentrator was undertaken. This paper describes the process that was developed for the Huari-Huari ore and the unique aspects of the Huari-Huari concentrator.

The Table Mountain copper deposit is in an isolated portion of north-eastern Churchill County, Nev. Although copper-bearing outcrops have been known to exist in the area since 1909, no copper ore has been mined. Development of the property has been hampered by poor roads and rugged topography. Until 1941, the last 4 or 5 miles to the property had to be traveled either by foot or pack animal. As a part of the Bureau of Mines program of investigation and development of domestic mineral deposits, a project was started at the Table Mountain deposit. The Bureau began its field work on July 29, 1947, and completed it on October 18, 1948. Thirteen holes aggregating 2,711 linear feet, were drilled; samples were analyzed - 509 from cores and 143 from sludges. This report contains a brief history of the district and a description of the geology, deposits, and drilling done by the Bureau.

The development of a design-and-construct tunnelling project in Australia from its concept to its construction requires designs to be prepared and reviewed at several distinct stages prior to documenting ‘for construction’. On recent projects the post-tender stages have been variously called 30 per cent—70 per cent—100 per cent; or concept–substantial–final; or system definition–preliminary–critical. The design is reviewed at each stage by the designer’s internal reviewer, the contractor and its independent advisor(s), the owner and its independent advisor(s), the project’s independent certifier, proof engineers and often third-party stakeholders and their advisors. Documentation for each stage often dominates the design effort, at times distracting from design. This paper presents the authors’ experience of this design-and-review process. Comparisons of design budget and actual design spend and design program implications are presented. It is postulated that a subtle change has occurred in our industry that has diminished the value of the design dollar. Is there a better process? This paper describes uses of sodium sulfide in the flotation of oxide and sulfide minerals of copper, lead, and zinc. The activation and depression effects of sodium sulfide are of particular importance because of their applications with oxidized lead and copper ores. In spite of its industrial importance; however, the nature of the heterogenious reactions between sulfide ions in solution and the surface of oxidized minerals has not been fully understood. Hence, proposed mechanisms of the sulfide action in flotation, methods of measuring and monitoring of sodium sulfide in flotation pulps, and variables influencing the sulfide addition are analyzed. A review of recent studies shows that sodium sulfide addition to flotation pulps can be monitored and hence the optimum dosage controlled using the platinum and/or sulfide specific ion electrodes. The use of these electrodes for improved reproducibility of bench-scale experimental data and plant implementation of laboratory results is described.

The Bureau of Mines inventoried Federal lands in the State of Oregon and classified them in detail, section by section, according to their availability for mineral exploration and development as affected by legal status and agency management practices. The Bureau determined areas of the State having past mineral production and/or known metallic mineral resources and areas favorable for coal, oil, gas, and geothermal resources, and prepared maps that spatially compare the availability of Federal mineral land with these mineral areas to demonstrate the extent of restrictions to mineral entry. Oregon contains 62.1 million acres, of which 33.9 million acres or 55% is Federal mineral land. About 2.3 million acres of Federal land is favorable for selected metallic mineral deposits, of which 64% is available, 13% is restricted, and 23% is unavailable. Of the 21.1 million acres of Federal leasable land favorable for oil and gas, 68% is available, 11 % is restricted, and 21 % is unavailable. Of the 146,720 acres favorable for coal, approximately 71% is available, 13% is restricted, and 16% is unavailable. Federal leasable land favorable for geothermal resources amounts to 458,968 acres, of which 42% is available, 34% is restricted, and 24% is unavailable.

"The town of Monson in Piscutaquis County, Maine is the, center of an important site industry. Monson slate has a nation-wide reputation, particularly for electrical switch boards, and the deposits have been worked for the manufacture of such products for many years. Open-pit quarrying is the method most commonly employed in obtaining slate. Underground methods have been used in the Peaon Bottom district near Delta, Pennsylvania, but the quarries that were thus operated are now abandoned. Underground methods have been used more extensively in foreign countries, the most famous example being the slate mines at Angers in France, where an over-head stoping method has been employed successfully for many it is only under special conditions that underground methods can be successfully used. If the deposit is wide and relatively thin, or if the material is too unsound to constitute a safe roof, open-pit methods must be used, for slate is too low-priced a commodity to justify the heavy expense of any timbering methods. It is only where the deposit is relatively narrow, of great depth, and sufficiently sound to afford a strong roof that ordinary mining may be employed.The best slate beds in two of the three quarries operated at Monson are no worked by underground methods. The chief bed worked by the Portland Monson Slate Co. is 10 feet thick, stands vertical and strikes N. 63º F. The slaty cleavage is vertical and crosses the strike of the beds at an angle of 5 to 10°. The grain or second direction of splitting is vertical and perpendicular to the cleavage. In addition to the 10-foot bed, to 2-foot beds and one 5-foot bed are available but are not now utilized. In the Monson Maine Slate Co. quarry (the old Pond quarry),a greater number of beds available, but at present quarrying is confined to a single bed about 9 feet thick which dips 30º S.E. and strikes N. 47ºF. The slaty cleavage is vertical and strides N. 45º F., while the grain strikes N. 45-50º W. and is also vertical."

DO the curricula of our mineral technology schools prepare their graduates to meet properly the full range of their responsibilities in after life? An unequivocal "no" could be returned to this question, because training and experience in professional work are quite as important as adequate college preparation. Furthermore, a had curriculum with a splendid corps of men doing the teaching and a competent body of students doing the learning will produce a better result than an ideal curriculum in the hands of unqualified teachers and poorly prepared students.
