KEYNOTE of the mining geology sessions was the preparation for an extensive war with all that this implies as to the need for strategic minerals, both metallic and nonmetallic. Nevertheless the sessions also included many papers of less urgent, more theoretical interest. The stress of wartime production had the effect of giving an unusually full and rich program, the longest in recent years, with sessions continuing virtually throughout the meeting. Some papers dealt with geophysical prospecting as applied to mining geology; others were concerned with the grand strategy of mineral reserves and thus involved the industrial minerals; such "borderline" subjects were presented before sessions held jointly with the Geophysics Committee or the Industrial Minerals Division.

Experiments were conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Mines to verify enhancements due to chloride and surfactant additions in the leaching system of chalcopyrite with ferric sulfate and sulfuric acid. A statistical experimental design was used and equipment was designed to eliminate contributions from changes in solution electrochemical potential during the course of the measurements. Results confirmed that chloride additions increased chalcopyrite leaching by as much as 94 pct over the electrochemical potential versus hydrogen electrode range of 630 to 750 mV at pH 1.7 and 50°C. Total iron concentration had no effect over the range of 1 to 5 g/L. The effect of surfactant addition was less well defined. While additions of LA 790 (a polyoxyethylene lauryl ether) resulted in increased copper leaching in several of the tests, the differences were too small to be statistically significant. No interaction effect could be verified.

During the investigations of the occurrence of manganese in the western United States, the Bureau of Mines received a 100-pound sample of manganese ore from the Doyle-Smith property, Yuma County, Ariz. Laboratory tests were made to determine the amenability of this ore to standard ore-dressing methods of concentration to produce a marketable-grade product. The Doyle-Smith claims are in northern Yuma County, within 15 miles of the Artillery Peak deposit. The lot of ore used in the test work was taken from the outcrop of a large, massive, irregular bed of oxide manganese ore found on the claims.

Several discrete-event simulation models have been developed for designing the conveying system capacities of underground coal mines. Most of these models require the use of a step-function approach to mimic the loading process at each conveyor loading point. Over the years, practitioners have generally employed one of three versions of the step-function approach. An important issue is how these three versions compare to each other in terms of simulated capacity requirements for belt conveyors. Another is-sue is how they compare to peak capacity design. This paper addresses these issues by statistically and quantitatively comparing their simulation results. The consequences and problems associated with using each version are also discussed and summarized.

No presente trabalho busca-se avaliar o comportamento do solo virgem e com os resíduos, compactado, uma alternativa para área de Construção Civil. O estudo tem o objetivo de avaliar o solo (classificado como solo laterítico); e solo composto de polipropileno reciclado (rPP) e pó de madeira (PM); caracterizando a forma física e mecânica de rPP/PM para aterro. Neste trabalho, investiga-se a influencia dessas adições no comportamento mecânico de camadas compactadas de solo, avaliando o efeito do teor de composto rPP/PM. As amostras de polipropileno reciclado (rPP), e serragem (PM), foram separadas cada uma em 10%, 20% e 30%, e aquecidas juntas, após o aquecimento misturadas ao solo. Sendo classificado como solo de baixa compressibilidade (ML), caracterizando um silte argiloso. Segundo a classificação HBR, tem-se P200 < 35%, LL > 40, IP < 10 e IG =0, assim o grupo de classificação pertence ao grupo A-2, subgrupos A-2-5. Os resultados de Índice de Suporte Califórnia (ISC) do solo em estudo foram de 41% para amostra de solo e 130% para amostra de solo mais compósito.

Crushed stone operations have become more difficult due to rising costs of labor and equipment, with the consequent reduction in profit margins. Competition from other operators and the encroachment of vertically integrated companies place severe restrictions on available markets. The seasonal demand for stone precludes any definite production level, and changes in productivity have to be accommodated. These influence profitability, and therefore production plans must be continuously adjusted to keep pace with rapidly changing conditions. The basic problem of stone companies seeking to maximize profits is one of balancing stone production costs, costs of inventory holding and stock-piling, marketing costs and any other charges accruing over time against the selling price of stone. Because of high peak demands, slack period production must be stored and then distributed to supplement peak period production. For a multi-plant operation, there is a need to evaluate at the same time the interaction between the plants and the various marketing sectors. In a multi-plant operation with different production capacities and production costs, stone producers are interested in the answers to the following questions: 1. How much stone should be produced at each plant in each time period? 2. What should be the optimum stone shipment from each plant to each market? 3. What are the effects on net returns and shipping plans, if production capacities are altered at the plants? These questions have many different answers that, will satisfy demands. From the point of production scheduling, the minimum production cost may be the objective. From the inventory standpoint, the best solution will be to synchronize production with sales. However, when the transportation of stone is also considered, the desired end is to achieve that delivered cost which maximizes the company f s net return. The experiment adopted magnetic separation-priority flotation (first to float copper,then float lead) combined technology to deal with a complex Cu,Pb ,Zn multi-metals ore which has high sulphur content, difficult to separate Cu, Pb ,Zn minerals from sulphur and separate Cu from Pb. Floatable pyrrhotite was separated through magnetic separation which could eliminate the adverse effect on the flotation followed up. And then adopting the priority flotation process to recover the Cu, Pb ,Zn from the magnetic tailings. In priority, flotation Cu, BP(a kind of ethionine ester collector ) and ethyl xanthogenate were used as the collector, LD-1 and sodium sulphite were used as the depressant.The depressants combined with humic acid sodium and lime were used for chalcopyrite ? pyrite separation to further improve the copper concentrate grade. Considering the raw ore that contain 0.32% copper, 0.54% lead and 25.54% sulfur. The copper concentrate grade is 23.61%. The lead content of copper concentrate is only 0.85% . The recovery of copper is 75.03%,and the lead concentrate grade is 54.58%, the copper content of lead concentrate is only 0.81% and the recovery of lead concentrate is 62.24%. The mineral processing indexes were excellent, finally realizing the high effective separation of Cu, Pb , Zn and pyrite. This technique provides a new approach to highly utilize complex copper-lead-zinc ore.

During the war the National Research Council at Ottawa sent out questionnaires to the managers of nearly all the industrial plants in Canada. Inquiry was made as to the research equipment possessed, the number of research workers employed and the nature of the research problems which still remained unsolved. Practically all the companies reported that they had no special facilities for research, had no re-search workers and did not require the assistance of the National Research Council-because they had no research problems. Perhaps we have here one of the chief reasons why certain of our manufacturers find themselves unable to meet foreign competition. For hundreds of years the Indian tribes of northern Chile worked, in a small way, the copper deposits at Chuquicamata. They had no research problems and made no striking success of their mining operations. Then came an American company with a research problem, which they proceeded to solve. To-day the stock of that company has a market value of about $140,000,000.

Mining has been typified of late as a boom and bust, cyclical industry operating against a steady decline in the size and quality of mineral deposits. Decreasing deposit grades and increasing costs of traditional mining techniques, all in the face of another commodity downturn, are forcing mining companies more than ever before to seek out new and innovative ways to operate. New technologies are emerging to model, control and track resources through the mining value chain, to move material about mines more efficiently, and to identify and separate ore from gangue early in the extraction process.Discovering such technologies however is only the first challenge for mining companies. Actually implementing technological change successfully has proved to be an even bigger challenge. Like for many industries, fulfilling the promised benefits for the expense and timing envisioned, has not been easy when innovative technologies are introduced.Citing the author’s insights and experiences in a number of emerging technologies, this paper explores barriers to implementing technological change in the mining context. Key elements of a change management framework, first developed for implementing mine management systems, are described to give mining executives insight into how they and their organisations can succeed through technology-driven change.CITATION:McCarthy, B, 2016. System objectives and design criteria for an in-mine visual personnel paging system are discussed. Display technologies are evaluated and tradeoffs leading to display selection are described. The prototype dispatcher's console, battery/receiver box and visual display assemblies are functionally described. The report includes circuit descriptions, schematics, parts lists and equipment cabinet drawings for the three assemblies. The report concludes with an estimate of the manufacturing cost for each assembly.

Land use is the single most important element affecting the quality of our physical environment. .The minerals industry is a user of land and by its very nature, directly affects the landscape. Mining is a very visible activity. Producers of sand and gravel, crushed stone, clay, cement and lime operate right at the interface of the public. These production sites must be located near population centers. People are more travel oriented than years ago and through use of the expanded interstate highway system visit remote and little-visited areas. They visit communities on their vacations, places they enjoy on weekends and places they drive past on business trips. Although not residents of these localities, they have a strong interest in changes that occur in the landscape. As a result, the public has a greater concern today about mining and its use of land. From 1930 through 1971, the minerals industry used 3.65 million acres, or 0.16 percent of the land mass in the United States (4)2/. Of the total 3.65 million acres utilized, about 59 percent was accounted for by the area of excavation, 20 percent by disposal of overburden and other mine wastes from surface mining, 13 percent by disposal of mill or processing wastes, and 5 percent by disposal of underground mine wastes; the remaining 3 percent was subsided or disturbed as a result of underground workings. Nonmetallic minerals and fossil fuels each accounted for 43 percent of surface land used during 1930-71; the metal mining industry utilized the remaining 14 percent.

Este trabalho tem como objetivo demonstrar a aplicação das técnicas de laminação termomecânica de aços microligados para obtenção de propriedades mecânicas elevadas em um laminador Steckel. O processamento de um aço com composição química favorável à obtenção de propriedades mecânicas compatíveis com o grau X60 especificado na norma API 5L é demonstrado. Foram alcançados limites de escoamento a 0,5% de deformação e a resistência à tração mínimos de 473MPa e 549MPa respectivamente, alongamento médio de 38%, razão elástica em 86% e temperatura de transição dúctil frágil em torno de -50°C atendendo às especificações da norma.

The generation of steam for drilling operations has visually been accomplished in the past by the use of portable locomotive-type boilers without the aid of auxiliary equipment or advanced for economizing fuel or water consumption. This has been due primarily to the fact that the steam-generating plant of a drilling well must necessarily be of temporary and portable design, and the amount of steam generated has not been considered sufficient to justify the additional expense necessary to obtain more economical operation. However, with the constantly increasing depth to which oil wells are being drilled and the use of larger and heavier equipment, the steam requirements have reached a point where equipment and methods that were previously considered as applicable only to permanent plant installation can be and are being used to a decided advantage by the more progressive operators. As an example of the present-day requirements and the rapidly increasing steam consumption in rotary drilling, a comparison between the requirements during the intensive drilling period in the Seminole end Oklahoma City fields of Oklahoma is of interest. In the Seminole field. There the approximate depth of rotary drilling was 3,500 feet, the general practice was to use three 85 to 90 or 100 horsepower A. P. I. code boilers operating at a working pressure of 175 to 200 pounds per square inch. The fuel end water consumption was approximately 450 to 500 thousand cubic feet of gas and 700 to 750 barrels of water per day. In the Oklahoma City field, where the average drilling depth is approximately 6,500 feet, the general practice is to use either four 100 or 116 horsepower or three 123 horsepower A.P.I. code boilers, operating at a pressure of 250 pounds per square inch. The fuel and water consumption varies from 550 to 750 thousand cubic feet of gas and from 1,000 to 1,500 barrels of water per day.

Serão comparados os nivéis de irreversibilidade dos componentes que compõem a unidade. A escolha do ciclo regenerativo com a referência em análise, é devido sua eficiência global. Isso é proporcionado através do aquecimento da água de alimentação da caldeira, com isso, consequentemente ocorre uma diminuição da necessidade de energia imposta na caldeira. A análise realizada também mostra as irreversibilidades da planta através da análise de exergia.

The paper discusses the treatment problem of mine (waste) water for enterprises of the Russian Arctic. The wide range of relevant pollutants, financial resources, the availability of land for the construction of a treatment plant, waste generated during the treatment process are some of the factors controlling current and future process design solutions. All mining operations have adopted water treatment and water quality monitoring solutions, however there is no single approach to the problem and each industry participant operates within the scope of its available resources. The range of existing and emerging methods is extensive — from using constructed wetlands for the deposition of mineral nitrogen compounds in settling ponds, reagent deposition and chemical coagulation in exhausted mine workings, and filtering dams on the surface to retrofitting existing mine drainage treatment plants with the adoption of the electrochemical coagulation process. Methods of wastewater treatment from heavy metals, oil products, and nitrogen compounds are demonstrated in the example of two industrial facilities in the Murmansk region. It was found that the use of electrochemical coagulation provides effective treatment of mine water from NO3, NO2, Ni, Fetotal and petroleum hydrocarbons (the degree of purification from 50.5-99.7%), the use of phytotreatment system provides wastewater treatment from ammonium ions and nitrite ions by 53-84%, nitrate ions - by 22%. A remoção de inclusões nos distribuidores de lingotamento contínuo tem sido investigada por meio de modelamentos físicos e matemáticos. Recentemente, a injeção de gás nos distribuidores tem sido considerada como uma alternativa para aprimorar a remoção de inclusões. Vários trabalhos vêm sendo desenvolvidos analisando os efeitos da injeção de gás e sua interação com as inclusões. No entanto, existe espaço para mais investigações envolvendo o efeito da vazão do gás e a localização do sistema de injeção de gás na eficiência de remoção de inclusões. No presente trabalho, foi usado um modelo físico construído em escala 1:3 de um distribuidor industrial de 40 toneladas de capacidade nominal, para analisar o efeito da injeção de gás. Os experimentos incluíram contagem on-line de partículas pela sonda APS III e análise de curvas DTR. O resultado mostrou que a injeção de gás é benéfica à remoção de inclusões e que a análise pura dos volumes característicos, calculados a partir das curvas DTR, não é suficiente para avaliar a eficiência de remoção.

Prediction of the thermal duties of copper coolers in freeze lined furnaces is challenging. Where copper coolers are immersed in liquid slag the heat transfer is often defined by a natural convection cell immediately adjacent to the wall, in the absence of other factors producing forced convection. Slag coolers are typically not fully immersed, slag temperature, liquidus and superheat can vary, and bath levels may change significantly with batch tapping, leading to substantial variations in radiation heat fluxes. Radiation heat transfer is discussed with reference to the non-obvious impact of slag liquidus on radiation losses in the exposed cooler sections. Reference is made to literature and the results of analytical and FEM models.

ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. It is the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by each exploratory project as soon as practicable after its conclusion. The Mining Branch, Lowell B. Moon, chief, conducts prelimi¬nary examinations, performs the actual exploratory work, and prepares the final report. The Metallurgical Branch, Oliver C. Ralston, chief, analyzes samples and performs beneficiation tests.The project was under the immediate supervision of Mitchell H. Kline, chief, Raleigh Division, Mining Branch.LOCATIONThe Chesapeake Corp. deposit is reached from West Point, Va., by driving west on State Route 33 to the junction of State Route 634, approximately 5 miles. Proceed southeast along State Route 634 about three-quarters of a mile, at which point an old longing road turns north along a ridge and leads to the marl outcrops about one-half mile distant. The Philbates property lies three-quarters of a mile farther west along State Route 33 from the junction with State Route 634. The property lies north of State Route 33 and east of State Route 623 (fig. 1). The marl deposits are on the north end of the farm. The Chesapeake Corp. tract comprises 174 acres and the Philbato property 58 acres."
