Graphite is an essential war mineral and for that reason has received much attention from the standpoint of national defense. During the World War the situation with respect to graphite supplies, though it never became acute, caused considerable concern. Even in peace time, however, graphite has aroused more interest than the actual size of the industry seems to warrant. Despite this wide interest the facts of the industry do not seem to be generally known. Often there has been an almost total disregard of the essential' economic and technical problems involved. Long ago Bastin3 made the following statement; in a Government' report: "To-day there are more abandoned mines and mills in the United States than the number in operation * * *. In the number of times' some of these properties have changed hands in the course of a few years, there is a record of misrepresentation and disappointment that can hardly be equaled in any other branch of mining; and many properties have been notoriously associated with stock manipulation of doubtful character." According to one authority fully 600 graphite mines have failed in the United States, and the record shows that of all these properties scarcely a score have ever succeeded in operating for as much as a year or two. More than 40 mines have been worked at various times in the State of New York alone and at least that many in Alabama. Throughout the country, in fact, there are scarcely a dozen States in which efforts have not been made at some time to exploit graphite deposits. At the present time the list of mines that can be classed as at all active is reduced to less than ten. Failures inevitably occur in all lands of mining, but the disheartening feature of the record of graphite mining in this country is that so few ventures have even paid back the money put into them and. that none has been a conspicuous success.

The Bureau of Mines evaluated synthetic fluorspars as substitutes for natural fluorspar in basic oxygen steelmaking using a high-temperature rotational viscometer and a quarter-ton basic oxygen furnace (BOF). Consider-able variation in stability and BOF slag fluidizing properties were found when using the initial synthetic products, but improved synthesis methods produced synthetic fluorspars that were generally comparable to natural fluorspar in laboratory testing. Trials in the furnace showed the synthetic products to be operationally the equivalent of natural fluorspar. Higher sulfur and phosphorus contents in some of the synthetic materials did not adversely affect the steel chemistry. Analyses of wet scrubber samples showed evidence that the pelletized synthetic fluorspars experienced greater physical and chemical disintegration than did natural fluorspar. It was also found that operation of a BOF without fluorspar is possible when making low-carbon steels because iron oxide is intrinsically generated as the slag fluidizer.

THE major metal mine operations of the United States Smelting Refining and Mining Company in Utah are in the Bingham area. The Company also owns and operates metal mines in the Ophir district, twelve miles south of Bingham, and in the Tintic district, 28 miles south of Ophir. Operations of the Company in the Park City area have been idle since early in World War II. These mining camps, lying at moderate elevations, serviced by railroads, hard-surfaced highways, in close proximity to mills, smelters, cities and towns, fertile valleys, winter and summer vacation areas, and airports are probably as favorably situated as any mining camps in the world. Introduction This paper presents in detailed form the results of settling tests that were published in a few preliminary notes in the April 1949 issue of the Bulletin (p. 166). Carborel is the trade name for sodium carboxymethyl-cellulose and aluminium carboxymethyl-cellulose produced by the reaction of monochloroacetic acid on the alkali cellulose to form an ether. The water-soluble sodium carboxymethyl-cellulose has been known in Europe for several years as sodium cellulose glycolate and has been marketed under several trade names. These cellulose ethers, however, are relatively new in North America, where the name carboxymethyl-cellulose is often abbreviated to C.M.C., or they are referred to as cellulose gum. The particular grade of Carboxel used in the settling tests in the mill of Chesterville Mines, Limited, is the high-viscosity sodium carboxymethyl- cellulose known as Carboxel H.V. It is a white, fluffy powder and is hygroscopic, although not deliquescent. Carboxel solutions in water are colourless, odourless, and resistant to beat and light. They are stable to alkalies, but are precipitated by acids when the pH is reduced below 4.0, and also by solutions of soluble lead, iron, copper, aluminium, and chromium salts. Solutions of Carboxel exhibit the properties of hydrophilic colloids.

1. The investigation shows that there are two coal beds of major importance in Perry County from the standpoint of present production -Flag and Fire Clay -and two beds of minor importance -Haddix and Hindman. The Flag and Fire Clay beds contain the largest remaining known reserves. 2. Known measured and indicated reserves in all beds, based on a minimum thickness of 14 inches and 1,800 tons per acre-foot of coal in place, are estimated at 840 million short tons as of January 1, 1954. Of this total, 720 million short tons is in beds 28 inches and more thick. Areas in each bed were omitted from the estimate because available data relative to the bed characteristics are too meager for making an estimate that conforms with the definitions of measured and indicated coal adopted for this study. Should future drilling or development prove reserves in these areas, these should be added to the total estimated reserves.

This report deals with a portion of the research and development work in the field of synthesis gas purification, carried out by the Bureau of Mines at its Morgantown, W, Va., Station in cooperation with West Virginia University. The Bureau's work in connection with gas purification has been performed with the objective of finding effective, low-cost, processes for removing impurities from synthesis gas to protect the catalyst used in the Fischer-Tropsch process for production of liquid fuels. Synthesis gas used for the production of other chemicals, such as ammonia, alcohols, and methane, requires equally rigorous purification. Although present-day practice in the manufactured-gas industry does not require such a high degree of purification, there is increasing interest in the complete removal of sulfur compounds from city gas. Although the gas-purification work at Morgantown deals with several impurities, major effort has been devoted to organic sulfur compounds in gas; this paper represents a progress report on some of the more important studies in connection with those compounds. Because this is a progress report on the Bureau's experimental work, no attempt has been made to cover the work of others on the subject; references to the literature have been restricted to those bearing directly on the work described.

A process for regenerating spent pickle liquor is proposed in which some of the water is evaporated at atmospheric pressure and ferrous sulfate is precipitated as monohydrate crystals..Equilibrium conditions are set for a slurry of crystals in a mother liquor containing 5 percent FeS04 and 45 percent E2S04, by weight, and boiling at about 235° F. The slurry is pumped continuously to a filter, and the mother liquor from the filter is pumped back for reuse in the pickling tanks. The net result of the process is to remove ferrous sulfate in the regeneration plant at the same rate ac it is produced in the pickling tanks. This process is integrated with the steel-pickling operation and controlled by the pickling requirements for particular steels. Spent pickle liquor is removed for regeneration continuously from both batch and continuous picklers at higher acid concentrations than would be dumped to waste because no acid is neutralized or discarded. However, the process is not designed to keep a sulfuric acid concentration stronger than 25 percent in any pickling tank. To retain flexibility in the pickling operation, all acid makeup is added to the pickling tanks. Rinse waters are used as water makeup for the pickling tanks. To further minimize waste of acid in the rinse waters, improvements of rinsing practices are outlined.

The analysis is an update of the analysis performed on the Coal Extraction R&D Program for EY 1975 - FY 1980 and presented in a MITRE report, MTR-7225, published in May 1975. Major changes included: new production scenarios and an update of R&D cost estimates.

Os pós fluxantes têm como base o sistema CaO-SiO2-Al2O3-Na2O-CaF2 sendo que, em alguns casos, podem conter também MgO, Li2O, K2O e B2O3. Os resíduos de mármore e granito, oriundos dos processos de produção de rochas ornamentais, são passivos ambientais na região sudeste, sobretudo no estado do Espírito Santo. As composições destes resíduos são similares a dos pós fluxantes utilizados nos processos de lingotamento contínuo e portanto serão utilizados neste trabalho para formulação de novos fluxantes. Uma mistura de granito, pó de mármore e adições foi realizada com o objetivo de produzir um fluxante similar aos comerciais encontrados no mercado. O novo fluxante foi caracterizado por difração de Raios X antes e depois de passar pelo teste de susceptibilidade de formação de fases cristalinas ou “teste de Stollberg” modificado. Os resultados mostraram que existe a formação de fases similares às observadas em fluxantes comerciais. Avanços nesta área podem viabilizar economia de matéria-prima e a diminuição do impacto ambiental causado pelo mercado de rochas.

The Annual Business Meeting of the members of The Rocky Mountain Coal Mining Institute held during the 83rd Regular Meeting of the Institute was called to order by the president, Bernard Bernstrom at 2:50 p.m. Tuesday, June 30, 1987 in the Janss Auditorium of the Snowmass Conference Center in Snowmass Village, Colorado. Thirty-one were present and a quorum was established. The president outlined the purpose of the meeting was to inform the members of the status of the affairs and activities of the corporation during the preceding year. It was moved by Leon Jeannot, seconded and carried to approve the minutes as published in the 1986 Proceedings. The chair called for reports of the various committees and these reports will by placed on file in the RMCMI Office. Bylaws and Resolutions. Chairman Loren V. Linville reported there were no bylaws revisions. He further reported that the Board had adopted three resolutions: (1) Noting the passing of members since the last convention-Benton Boyd, E. A. Hare, E. S. Moran, Jr. and Edward Prostel. (2) Of appreciation to the Executive Secretary, officers, chairman, Diamond Jubilee chairman and committees and convention committees for an outstanding job in preparing for the 83rd Regular Meeting of the Institute. (3) To recommend to all RMCMI members that, on an individual basis, they each oppose replacing coal fired generation with natural gas generation. Membership. Chairman Leon Jeannot reported that at the beginning of the 1986 fiscal year, there were 881 active or dues-paying members. During the year, 219 members were dropped for a variety of reasons such as non-payment of dues, transfer, employed elsewhere, change of address. Ninety-six new members have been recruited for an active total of 758. In addition there are 55 Life Members, 20 senior members, six scholarship winners and seven supporters for a net total of 846. The budget of RMCMI calls for 1,000 active members and we must address and plan for those short-term prospects as they will certainly impact our membership. A full report is on file in the RMCMI office. Patrons of the Institute. Chairman Ira McKeever reported that only 59 Patrons renewed their support during 1986-87. Program. Chairman Bill Balaz announced that the convention program theme "This is OUR Life", as presented in "Past", "Present" and "Future" segments was very well received. He called for additional helpers another year and suggested that next year's program format be changed to a hard hitting one. Publicity. Chairman Tom Egan reported that of the three newsletters sent members during the year, that the most effective one was the newspaper format one and recommended its use next year. RMCMI hired Bob Jacob who heads his own public relations firm to solicit advertising for the Proceedings on a contract/ commission basis. He attended the convention for this purpose and to solicit business card ads. A full report is on file in the RMCMI office. Scholarship. Chairman Keith McGinnis reported that five of the six scholarship recipients were present at the convention. Each was introduced to the membership at the Tuesday morning Scholarship Breakfast, presented a plaque and responded. The input from each winner was most favorable to the program. Each was appreciative of the many contacts made and the educational seminars and programs. The selection process started in March and was completed in May, except for one university which had difficulty in providing a candidate. It is suggested that the initial contact with the institutions be made in December and completed by April 1. This year, for the first time, three of the six universities were visited for the purpose of interviewing the candidates. They were Colorado, Utah and Wyoming. A very positive feedback was received from these schools and it is recommended that the practice continue. CONVENTION COMMITTEES Convention Arrangements. Doris Finnie presented the following report: As a professional meeting planner, this Diamond Jubilee convention was indeed a great challenge. One meal was added to the package and thus increased the individual cost. Snowmass Resort Association is unique in that they utilize a conference coordinator who acts as the middle man between myself and the usual persons we deal with, like AV personnel, the chef, the banquet director, the steak fry personnel, the Sunday tour etc. so the office had to become creative. For instance, we learned early on we could not deal with the local florists. It cost us lots less to buy our flowers wholesale in Denver, have my husband drive them up and our West Virginia daughter to arrange them! But, finally her floral arrangement class at CSU paid off! Before 1914 , Chile , because of her extensive resources of natural nitrates , practically monopolized the world markets for one of the leading fertilizer materials . Since nitrogen also is an important war material , constituting in fact the principal ingredient in many high-powered explosives , the World War and the widespread insistence upon national self- sufficiency for war materials brought about the development of nitrogen fixation plants in all of the larger countries . The production of by- product ammonia from gas and coke plants was likewise stimulated . As a result , Chile , even after the ocean lanes were reopened , was forced to fight for her lost markets . Since the world capacity to produce is still far in excess of annual consumption , the competition between natural and synthetic supplies has been keen and prices have fallen below pre-war levels . Chile has recently succeeded in unifying her industry , utilizing the most efficient process now in operation, and the Government is a partner in the new company that will take over all of the present producing companies . These developments place Chilean nitrate of soda , in a much more favorable position among the markets of the world . More intense competition will undoubtedly follow and , in order that those interested may become familiar with the fields upon which the nitrogen conflicts of the near future may be waged , the following general summary of the nitrogen industry has been prepared .

The purpose of this Bureau of Mines investigation was primarily to isolate and examine the effect of liquid content upon the apparent porosity and bulk density of compacts pressed from high-purity, fused aluminum oxide, and, secondarily, to study the actual mechanism by which the liquid content affects the bulk density. No attempt was made to approach the theoretical maximum density of the oxide by introducing additives, particle packings, or similar variables; instead this study is an intercomparison of the bulk densities obtained as functions of the water contents of the compacting mixtures. Water content was varied from 7 percent to 25 percent, on a total-weight basis. The data gathered indicated a well-defined optimum water content for obtaining minimum apparent porosity and maximum bulk density, under the conditions of the experiment. During the course of this study, a number of additional variables in the forming process were discovered and are introduced in this report, although a thorough evaluation was found to be beyond the scope of this present investigation.

The drill and blast method is the most prominent rock excavation method used in mining and civil engineering projects. The ground vibration is the most undesirable effect of the blasting and needs to be controlled. The blasts are designed so that ground vibration at nearby structures must remain under the prescribed limit. Various empirical blast vibration attenuation models have been presented to estimate the ground vibration for designing purposes. These models assume ground vibration as a function of distance and maximum charge per delay. United States Bureau of Mines (USBM) model is most commonly used for the blast design. However, the uncertainty associated with these models is seldom characterized, thus diminishing its reliability. The probabilistic Bayesian approach associated with the Monte Carlo method can easily quantify uncertainties associated with the model and its parameters. Thirty-three blast vibration observation data from a granite quarry in Kerala, India, is used to estimate the probability distribution of model parameters. Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) approach is used for sampling 12,000 samples for obtaining the posterior distribution of parameters. The uncertainty associated with model parameters is quantified from the posterior distribution, and this is further used to estimate the credible and prediction limits of the model. The point estimate of the most optimum value of the parameter is estimated using maximum-aposteriori or MAP estimate. The model parameters are also obtained using the commonly used least-square error method, which is a maximum likelihood estimation or MLE approach. It has been observed that the accuracy of the model obtained using both MAP and MLE approach is almost equal. However, the MAP estimate as per Bayesian probabilistic analysis has the added advantage that it can estimate the uncertainty of parameters as well as the model, which is not possible using the MLE approach.

The rare-earth group are among the least familiar of the 92 known elements. Moreover, the relatively few people who have even heard of the rare earths ordinarily regard them merely as very rare elements having unusual names but doubtful commercial application. This typical attitude can be attributed partly to the fact that no commercial uses have been developed for most of the members of the group and partly to the fact that those which do enter into useful articles do so anonymously. Most people speak with a degree of familiarity of the "chromium" plating on their automobiles or household appliances; "antimony" ash trays and cigarette boxes are on sale in many department stores; and "tungsten" lamps and even "molybdenum" steels are advertised in popular magazines. However, the average user of a pocket cigarette lighter is not conscious that the important sparking element is a "flint" made from ferrocerium, and if he does chap on to inquire about the composition he is likely to be told that it is "sparking alloy", "misch metal", or 'pyrophoric alloy." Similarly, the wearer of spectacles made of "Crookes" or other tinted glass probably is not aware that the light softening effects are due to the presence of rare-earth oxides, or that the arc light on his street may owe its brilliance to cerium fluoride in the carbon electrode. Despite a variety of practical applications, however, most of the rare-earth metals still must be listed as scientific curiosities. In fact, little is known as to the properties which may make them useful products at some future date. Meanwhile it is important to note that Nature has been relatively generous in her distribution of the rare earths and that adequate supplies of most of them will be forthcoming when these elements have proved their worth as commercial products.

Thermal reactions of l-methylpyrrole, l-butylpyrrole, and l-isopropyl-pyrrole were investigated by a flow method in the temperature range of 4500 to 5750 C. Those of I-butylpyrrole and l-isopropylpyrrole were also investigated in the 3400 to 4000 C range in a static system. The I-substituted pyrroles isomerize by an irreversible reaction to 2-substituted pyrroles. A reversible isomerization reaction shifted the alkyl group from the 2-to the 3-position on the pyrrole ring. All of the isomerization reactions are homogeneous, unimolecular, nonchain, first-order reactions having similar mechanisms and transition states. There is decomposition and cleavage of the longer alkyl side chain when it is in either the 2-or 3-position giving, as products, pyrrole, 2-and 3-methylpyrrole, 2-and 3-ethylpyrrole, pyridines, and hydrocarbons. The decomposition reactions appear to be by free-radical mechanisms. Pyridine homologs are formed by the expansion of the alkylpyrrole: butylpyrrole produces pyridine, and isopropylpyrrole produces 3-methylpyridine. Approximate Arrhenius equations are given for the formation of the decomposition products.

A general review of the laboratory and field research being conducted at Michigan Technological University in the area of diesel emissions is presented. The facilities involved with this research are also described. These are the Experimental Mine, the diesel dilution tunnel test cell, the Mine Air Monitoring Lab (MAML), the portable instruments and the production mines used.

"AbstractThis paper provides a rough outline of economic expectations for the near future and then goes on to discuss their effect on the expected demand for metals, using zinc, copper, nickel and aluminum as detailed examples.IntroductionMINING, as you are all painfully aware, is a cyclical business. We believe that it will remain so as long as there are economic cycles.The fortunes of the industry are tied to those sectors of the economy where decisions can be postponed until more favourable times: automobiles, housing, appliances, inventory building and capital spending. Over the past two years, while U.S. GNP fell by 3.8%, automobile production declined by 31 %, from 9.7 million units in 1973 to 6.7 million in 1975. Housing starts plummeted some 43% from 2.1 million units in 1973 to 1.2 million in 1975. Little wonder that U.S. copper consumption fell by 37% and zinc consumption by 38% over the same period.With the rest of the world's economies moving in unison with that of the United States, it is also not surprising that times have been tough for mining.Arthur Burns, chairman of the U.S. Federal Reserve, contends that each recession sows the seeds of its own recovery. The worse the recession, the better the subsequent recovery. If this is true, then the lot of the mining industry should improve significantly over the next two to three years."

High-pressure acid leaching (HPAL) of nickel laterites has received considerable attention in recent years. High paymetals extraction, good selectivity, and advances in pressure hydrometallurgical technology are some of the reasons for this interest. Falconbridge Limited (Sudbury. Ontario) investigated the HPAL process using both fresh water and seawater for ore processing. The use of seawater resulted in a chloride concentration of 7.8 g/L in the autoclave feed. A test program was developed to study the effect of process water and leach temperature on the leaching behaviour of different ore compositions from the Koniambo deposit in New Caledonia. The work showed that salinity has a major effect on autoclave chemistry. This paper explores the results.

During the late 1940's and early 1950?s, the Westinghouse Combustion Turbine Division built and demonstrated a residual oil-burning locomotive on six eastern railroads. Plans were made to convert to burning pulverized coal, and a single combustor was operated at a full-pressure condition in the laboratory for about two years. During the mid-1960's to mid-1970's, there was considerable interest in coal-burning MHD and a combustor was developed which would also be applicable to combustion turbines. In the early 19801s, the BCR National Laboratory (BCRNL) became affiliated with the University of Pittsburgh, and a program was begun, supported by the Stare of Pennsylvania, to develop an all-purpose combustor for use with industrial and utility boilers and eventually with combustion turbines. In this paper, we review the work of almost 40 years, indicate our present position, and propose steps to be taken leading to efficient and environmentally acceptable power generation from coal, and specifically to coal-burning locomotives.
