In the five coalfields of Staffordshire, there have been some 43 incidents of spontaneous fires and heatings which have required special attention in the past ten years. This total excludes incidents in the Thick Coal Seam of South Staffordshire, which was worked until 1967, and which was subject to an almost continuous series of heatings. The incidents have been classified to show the sites of occurrence, the contributory factors which may have caused them and the treatments applied to them. The remedial techniques, as practised in Staffordshire, are dealt with in detail, with particular reference to standard methods of stopping-off. Precautionary measures taken are described, including a "liability to spontaneous combustion" classification of all seams, and the setting up of an emergency organization with emergency stocks of materials and equipment. The paper is concluded by a few words on the organization and control at the time of an incident.

"NioCorp is developing the niobium/scandium/titanium Elk Creek carbonatite resource deposit. The carbonatite phase contains significant niobium (0.71% Nb2O5), titanium (2.68% TiO2) and scandium (72 g/t) and is composed predominantly of calcite, dolomite and ankerite. Niobium is mostly (80%) contained in the pyrochlore and the balance in various Fe-Nb-Ti oxides, which also host most of the titanium. Scandium is distributed homogeneously throughout the ore mineral assemblage. The process flowsheet recovers separate niobium, titanium and scandium products. Scandium is extracted from whole ore hydrochloric acid leach solutions through solvent extraction, and is further refined through a re-leach and precipitation process. Scandium leach residues are treated with sulphuric acid to recover separate niobium and titanium precipitates. Both hydrochloric acid and sulphuric acid reagents are recycled within the flowsheet. This paper will discuss key bench and pilot test results (focusing on the scandium flowsheet) and will present a conceptual flowsheet developed by the project team for NioCorp at SGS Minerals.INTRODUCTION NioCorp is developing North America's only niobium/scandium/titanium project. The Elk Creek project is located near Elk Creek, Nebraska, and is the highest grade niobium project in North America and the largest prospective producer of scandium in the world. These elements are unique and valuable superalloy materials that are strategic and critical to many industries and national defense technologies. The project includes the Elk Creek Carbonatite (the Carbonatite) that intruded older Precambrian granitic and low to medium grade metamorphic basement rocks. Both the carbonatite and Precambrian rocks are interpreted to be unconformably overlain by approximately 200 meters (m) of Paleozoic marine sedimentary rocks of Pennsylvanian age. As a result of this thick cover, there is no surface outcrop within the Project area of the carbonatite, which was identified and targeted through magnetic surveys and confirmed through subsequent drilling. The available magnetic data indicate dominant northeast, west-northwest striking lineaments, and secondary northwest and north oriented features that mimic the position of regional faults parallel and/or perpendicular to the Nemaha Uplift."

"GeneralGIANT ORE is complex, with the gold values for the most part occurring in extremely close association with arsenopyrite, stibnite, jamesonite, and a wide group of antimonial minerals locally termed 'the grey minerals'. Pyrite is the most abundant of the sulphide minerals• and minor quantities of chalcopyrite, galena, and sphalerite also occur. Pyrrhotite has been found in some sections of the mine, but to date none of it has been nickeliferous. Native gold occurs in varying amounts throughout the ore bodies.In 1944, ore dressing investigations were commenced on diamond-drill core rejects and samples of surface outcrop ore. Results soon indicated that treatment to produce satisfactory recovery of the gold values would involve fine grinding to 80-85 per cent minus 200 mesh, recovery of free gold by jigs, followed by flotation, roasting of the flotation concentrate, and subsequent cyanidation of the calcine. Proceeding from this information, the flow-sheet was prepared, plant design worked out, equipment purchased, and construction of the treatment plant commenced in May, 1947.The crushing, grinding, and flotation units of the plant were rushed to completion and commenced operation on May 12th, l.948, at 225 tons of ore per day. This rate was maintained until January 27th, 1949, when the Allis-Chalmers roaster and cyanide plants were completed and commenced operation. During the period May 12th, 1948, to January 27th, 1949, gold recovered by amalgamation was the sole source of revenue. Flotation concentrate was stockpiled pending the completion of the Allis~Chalmers roaster and cyanide plants."

As part of a program to promote conservation and efficient utilization of petroleum resources, Bureau of Mines engineers at the Morgantown (W. Va.) Petroleum Research Laboratory are studying secondary oil-recovery projects in the Appalachian region. The increasing demand for petroleum and its products and the increasing cost of exploratory drilling tend to emphasize the importance of improving the recovery of oil from known petroleum reserves. Published reports setting forth the pertinent facts of these operations may help others to profit by the experience. This report presents the results of a study of secondary-recovery methods used in West Virginia by the Piedmont Oil and Gas Co., the Ryan Oil Co., and Water floods , Inc., on their Roane County leases in the Walton and Clover Rush Run pools. The principal oil-producing horizon underlying the area studied is the Big Injun sand, at approximately 2,000 feet. The sand is often referred to as blanket sand because it underlies much of the State and is oil-productive in many localities. Most of the pools in the area were discovered during 1907 to 1910 and were similarly developed and operated.

The growth of miniaturization in one hand and energy density need lead to rapid development of new chemistry for batteries as observed during last decade particularly in secondary systems. However dark side of the progress is always in environment impact and scarcity of resources. In the lithium segment a jump from six electrochemical series (all non rechargeable systems) before 1990 to more than 15 systems including new rechargeable systems has been observe during last decade. Lithium battery chemistry was enriched with new electrolytes, conductive salts and new oxide composition. In the same time, lithium ion battery safety was strongly improved during last period. The progress of these technologies was strongly boosted by the substantial growth of the mobile telephone market in the mid 1990's (+ 1% a month in 2000, and a 71% penetration rate in Europe in 2005 compared to just a few percent in 1996). This market is constantly in search of higher electrochemical performance (mainly energy density in front of increasing miniaturization. Recycling of end of life product could be managed not only in environment aspect, but also under resource conservation and economic aspect of arising technology (mainly on the effect of re-injection recovered materials) The Li-ion segment is a new branch in the cobalt market and impact of LiCoOx will be fitted with the actual increase of the demand for this battery. For this reason all the processes aim to valorize active and packaging material. RECUPYL process project was conducted in this direction to offer a new solution for recycling those lithium systems. The process has been developed at pilot industrial scales using synergy between new equipment (for mechanical pre-treatment step) and existing line at RECUPYL facility (for chemical treatment) and should lead to high valorization rate with a minimum hazardous co-products. The process was also developed in order to be able to recover news cathode materials introduced in electrode like LiFEPO4, LiMxCoyO2 and new anode composition in substitution with former carbon anode.

"The cost of occupational injuries and diseases in the mining industry in Quebec was estimated for the period of 2010 to 2012. The method used takes into account the financial and human costs assumed by employers, workers, and the community. To better direct research and prevention toward issues with the most significant consequences, the results are presented in various ranking tables, which stakeholders might find useful.RÉSUMÉ Le coût des accidents du travail et des maladies professionnelles dans l’industrie minière au Québec a été estimé pour la période 2010-2012. La méthode utilisée prend en compte les coûts financiers et humains endossés par les employeurs, les travailleurs et la communauté. Afin de mieux orienter les recherches et la prévention vers les problèmes ayant les plus graves conséquences, les résultats sont présentés dans divers tableaux de classement, qui seront d’une grande utilité aux parties prenantes. INTRODUCTIONThe mining industry is much safer today than it was 30 or 40 years ago, mainly due to a more qualified workforce, the use of automated equipment, and a corporate culture more focused on occupational health and safety (OHS); however, the number and the severity of occupational injuries and diseases continue to make this industry one of the most hazardous. In the province of Quebec, the mining industry accounts for approximately 0.4% of paid workers but is the source of 4% of fatal work accidents. It is, therefore, important to continue the prevention efforts already underway in the mining industry.The difficult global economy, which has affected the mining industry in the last few years, is an opportunity to reaffirm that sound management of OHS can have a positive impact on companies’ productivity and profitability. Occupational injuries and diseases are costly for the companies concerned and for society as a whole. Reducing their occurrence makes it possible to reduce not only the size of workers’ compensation board contributions but also several other financial and human costs."

The profitability of coal mining operations is highly dependent on the performance of the coal blending and processing facilities. Many companies have recognized this fact and have instituted optimization programs that require large amounts of coal characterization data, extensive operational information and complex costing models. Unfortunately, this brute force approach to optimization is often overwhelming in terms of time and cost and is generally too inaccurate to be of value in day-to-day field operations. A simpler and more practical approach involves the use of ?micro-price? optimization throughout the coal supply chain. This fundamental concept assigns unit values to each type product (particle or groups of particles) passing through the production units. True optimization occurs whenever all particles with positive worth are recovered and passed to market, while all particles with negative worth are rejected. This paper describes the fundamental workings of the micro-price concept as applied to coal blending and processing operations. Several examples are also included to demonstrate the economic gains that can be realized via the application of this concept.

Fluorite, a kind of critical non-metallic minerals, is the primary source of industrial fluorine. Sodium oleate (SO) is commonly used as the collector of fluorite ores. However, because of its some features (such as the low solubility, high solidifying point, and poor dispersion of SO) at low temperatures, it profoundly inhibits its collecting ability as well as the flotation performance. Herein, we have developed a low-temperature-resistant collector for the efficient flotation separation of fluorite from quartz. The advantages and disadvantages of the SO and sodium petroleum sulfonate (SPS) were analyzed by comparing the performance under different temperature conditions. The results of flotation tests suggest that SPS exhibited much better collecting performance than SO under low temperature. The flotation mechanism of the two collecting agents were further analyzed by contact angle measurements, zeta potential measurements, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), and flotation kinetics. The results indicated that both collectors can selectively undergo electrostatic and chemical adsorption with fluorite, with no adsorption on quartz surface. The sulfonic acid group in SPS is a hydrophilic functional group, which has a relatively higher solubility in water. Therefore, the water solubility of SPS is better at low temperatures.

Experience with the current version of gallery test 4, in use since 1913 to evaluate the incendivity of permissible explosives in the presence of coal dust, has shown the procedure to have inadequate discrimination. Consequently the Bureau of Mines used the up-and-down method of statistical design to investigate the incendivity of permissible explosives in the presence of coal dust and gas. A suitable device was developed to measure coal dust concentrations in the air-gas mixtures and to disperse the dust in the gallery atmosphere. A proposed testing method which uses suspended shots in a predispersed coal dust-gas-air mixture was evaluated. The new method can discriminate between different explosives with respect to their incendivity. Maximum ignitibility of the coal dust cloud by permissible explosives occurred in the vicinity of 0.3 oz/cu ft. About 10% sodium chloride in permissible explosive formulations had a very significant effect in reducing the probability of igniting coal dust. Bundled charges were more incendive than column charges.

"Safe and efficient mining of extremely inclined thick coal seams less than 20m thick is one of the new challenges in China coal industry. In recent years, the extremely inclined thick coal seams have been encountered in some old mines and western China, and currently the top coal caving longwall mining method has been successfully applied to this kind of coal seams. Accordingly, this paper studies the roof movement and its impact on shield supports of top-coal caving longwall mining in extremely inclined thick coal seams. The structure of main roof before failure was simulated by the fix-ended beam, and provided the solutions for determination of maximum compressive stress of the bottom beam end and maximum tensile stress of the top beam end. The failure mode on the upper end of working face is mainly a combination of compression and shearing, while that for the bottom end is tension and shearing. Roof fracture begins at the upper end of working and propagates downward. The shape of collapsed roof strata can be described as parabolic and divided into three segments from top to bottom, including no filling, uneven filling and densely filling segments. The roof loading conditions of no filling segment is more likely to have dynamic burst impacts.INTRODUCTIONExtremely inclined thick coal seam refers to that the dip angle of coal seam is greater than 45° and the thickness is greater than 3.5m (Wang and Zhang, 2015a; Wang and Zhang, 2015b; Wang, 2005; Xie, Gao, and Shangguan, 2005; Wu, et al., 2014; Deng and Wang, 2014; He, et al., 2015). This type of coal seams can be divided into three categories: 1. The extremely inclined thick coal seam, of which the thickness is less than 5m and the dip angle is less than 60°, is usually mined by fully-mechanized longwall mining method. 2. The extremely inclined thick coal seam, of which the thickness is 5 m-20m, is usually mined by top coal caving longwall method. And 3. When the thickness of extremely inclined thick coal seam is greater than 20m, it is mined by the horizontal section top coal caving longwall method. For example, the average angle ofWudong coal mine in Xinjiang province is 45°, and the thickness is 27m. Wudong coal mine is applying the horizontal section top coal caving longwall mining, producing 3 million tons annually per working face (Figure 1)."

Os resíduos provenientes das indústrias cerâmicas demandam locais apropriados de descarte, gerando gastos, desperdício de matérias-primas e, quando o local de descarte é impróprio, problemas ambientais. Sendo assim, se faz necessário o estudo da reutilização destes resíduos, tanto para fins econômicos quanto ambientais. Dessa forma, a reutilização de chamote, resíduo oriundo do descarte de materiais cerâmicos, é possível através da sua incorporação em massas cerâmicas para a produção de novos materiais (blocos, tijolos, telhas, etc). O presente trabalho teve como objetivo analisar a influência do chamote em massas cerâmicas, comparando dosagens com substituição de 10%, 20% e 30% em massa com um traço de referência. Para isso foram realizados ensaios, com os quais pode-se obter as propriedades relacionadas a retração por secagem e por queima, absorção de água, perda ao fogo, porosidade aparente e tensão de ruptura à flexão. Em suma, pode-se concluir que o uso do chamote permite a obtenção de materiais com boa resistência mecânica, moderada absorção de água e com boas propriedades dimensionais, demonstrando ser uma alternativa ambientalmente amigável e economicamente viável.

The oxidative degradation kinetics of chalcopyrite have been studied by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The obtained data are necessary for the kinetic description of the flash fusion process, which can contribute to the optimization of the smelting process in copper extractive metallurgy. Activation energy (Ea) evolutions of the involved processes have been determined by several isoconversional methods; in this sense, the chalcopyrite oxidation processes could be adequately described, among studied models (E1641–16, Ozawa–Flynn–Wall, Kissinger–Akahira–Sunose and Friedman), by the Kissinger–Akahira– Sunose kinetic model. Using this method, Ea and A values are found to be very dependent on the conversion. Under lower conversion levels, higher Ea and A values have been calculated with respect to that found for medium and higher conversion levels.

"The new smelting process commenced operation in 1978. The pelletizing and sinter plants were replaced with slurry-fed roasters and the blast furnaces with electric furnaces. The existing converter aisle and matte handling facilities remained unchanged.Process DescriptionNickel-copper concentrate is partially roasted in two slurry-fed fluid bed roasters. After gas cleaning, the sulphur dioxide gas is transferred to the acid plant. The roaster product is conveyed to two electric furnaces for smelting to produce a waste slag and furnace matte. The slag goes to the disposal area and furnace matte containing the metal values is processed in the converters for further removal of iron and sulphur.The final matte containing about 75 per cent metal values is shipped to the refinery in Norway.The commercial smelter was designed for 2135 tonnes per day of concentrate, with an availability of 85% . Roasters and electric furnaces were sized at 117 per cent of design, or 1250 tonnes per day on each of two lines. To determine in what part and to what extent creep or movement exists in an installed rock-bolt anchor and the effect of the creep or bleedoff on the tension load on a rock bolt, as well as the effect of normal mining activity on the rock-bolt load and anchor, the Bureau of Mines conducted tests in the laboratory and in two mines using four types of expansion-shell anchors, the wedge bolt, and in one mine, explosive-anchored rock bolts. Specially mounted heavy-duty springs, calibrated to obtain load readings from spring movement, were installed on the test bolts to prevent a drastic reduction in tension load caused by slipping or seating of the anchor. A dial gage, reading to 0.0001 inch, measured movement of the anchor shell against the rock and seating of the anchor wedge plug in the shell. While all bolts had electrical resistance strain gages for load reading, only readings from the laboratory tests were used because those from the field tests were erratic. The tests revealed that most load loss resulting from static loading is due to the slippage and seating of the serrations on the anchor shell into the drill-hole wall. Dynamic loading, primarily from sudden shocks from nearby blasting, and possibly from ground movement or mining activity, will cause the anchor wedge plug to seat in the anchor shell.

I am happy to welcome you to the twenty-third conference of the National Open-Hearth Committee, and our joint conference with the Blast Furnace Committee, of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers. It is appropriate that, for our fifteenth year anniversary, we should meet in the hotel and the city where this Open-Hearth Committee was inaugurated in 1925. At that first meeting, only a handful of men from a number of steel companies met to discuss ways and means to start a movement to improve the practical and metallurgical technique of open-hearth operations among independent manufacturers, as the United States Steel Corporation had carried on for many years.

WHEN Germany invaded Poland in September, 1939, the only operating helium plant in the United States was that near Amarillo. Texas, supplied with helium-bearing natural gas from the near-by Cliffside gas field. Today the Bureau of Mines has five plants capable of producing more than 25 times the prewar helium output of the Amarillo plant. Two of the plants have received Army-Navy "E" flags for their part in the faraway "Battle of the Atlantic," where heliumfilled Navy blimps chased Adolf Hitler's submarines away from American shores. Meteorologists, watching balloons carried high into the stratosphere by helium, determined weather conditions that influenced the selection of D-day and dates for other military operation. Demand for helium doubled overnight when the Navy decided to expand its lighter-than-air activities; and as the blimp patrol proved effective, the helium demand became ever greater. A tribute to the success of the Bureau of Mines in meeting the demand for helium was paid by the late Secretary of the Navy, Frank Knox, in a letter to the Secretary of the Interior on April 10, 1944. Under compuision of the present urgency to implement the President's promise to make the United States the arsenal for the democracies there is a tendency to demand a relaxation of restrictions on hours of labor and to speed up all industrial processes. The pressure is the more insistent with growing realization of the importance of the time factor in the success- ful prosecution of the war effort and the lack of skilled workers due to (2) operation of the draft, lack of an apprentice system in industry, and loss of skill by workers unemployed for long periods during the depression. With "total" war such as it is today the probabilities are that everyone will be required to exert greater effort (in many instances in activities to which they are unaccustomed) for longer periods than ever before has been necessary. The question arises, "What will be the aftereffects as well as the immediate effects on health, safety, and efficiency?" A review of the literature leaves the impression that this question has not been an- swered completely, especially as regards the ultimate effects. Mechanization, speeding up of industrial processes, mass produc- tion, and the small industrial concerns present many problems to indus- trial medicine. Does the tendency to expect the worker to produce at full speed all the time he is on the job decrease the effectiveness of the shorter working hours and cause undue fatigue, loss of efficiency, and increased accident proneness? The answer is important as this condition is likely to be intensified by the exigencies of the present emergency. According to Viteles (1)3, The increased tension under such conditions of work appears to offset the savings in muscular force made pos- sible by the machine. The tension, the speed, the subject- tion to specialization of work and a rhythm uncontrolled by the individual promote fatigue, characterized by a "decrease in the power to work, a decrease in pleasure taken in work, and a decrease in the enjoyment of the hours spent away from work."' The crowding of workers in temporary structures without proper provision for comfort and health may add greatly to the general fatigue factors already present in many industrial establishments. In 1932 Lockhart (2) stated that the production and maintenance of a healthy, satisfied industrial population is the most urgent necessity, involving problems so serious as to constitute a national task too great economically to be relegated to industrial concerns. If this was true in 1932, it must be doubly so today.
