The purpose of this paper is to provide the rationale for decision making when considering the use of three heading gate roads in Australian underground coal mines.There are currently 30 underground longwall mines in Australia with all but two employing two heading gate road longwall layouts. The volumetric capacity of these two heading ventilation circuits is evidently viable in typical block lengths and in low to moderate gas regimes. However, in gassier regimes, potential longwall production rates of 10 Mt/a, and or where block lengths are being extended to well beyond historical norms, a conventional two heading U circuit may not be adequate. Other than seam gas emission, block length and production dependent heat loads together sealed area management requirements also have to be considered.The two mines currently employing three heading gate roads have the opportunity to revert to two headings at any time but, based on operational experience to date, have not done so due to the consequential reduction in gas management capacity and lower production rates associated with gas delays and limitations on tailgate access.Although there are a number of alternative two heading longwall circuits available and employed worldwide, the custom and practice of promoting inert goaf atmospheres in most Australian coal mines to mitigate the risk of catastrophic gas explosions and spontaneous combustion often prevents the use of gas loaded bleeder systems. In this respect, Australian underground coal mines may be considered the safest in the world.The current situation is that three heading gate roads have been proven successful in Australian conditions, albeit at additional cost, where two heading ventilation circuits cannot manage net seam gas emission to the ventilation system at the production rates required. "Inter-aquifer leakage due to fractures caused by coal seam gas extractions or longwall mining is an important issue for both the gas and coal industries. Currently, predicting stress induced macro-porosity associated with hydraulic fracturing, depressurisation via dewatering or collapse of overlying seams to infill a void left by longwall mining, is problematic. If fractures can be located the fracture can be sealed. Locating fractures is difficult. The non-geophysical approaches to locate fractures has been to consider the mixing of different waters, particularly that of more recent shallower groundwater with older deeper groundwater, via differences in radio-isotopes integrated with geochemical models to predict likely mixing of waters. This approach is applicable under appropriately complex settings; however, it is an expensive technique and is based on the assumption that the daughter isotopes are equally non-reactive which may not always be the case.Potentially a cheaper and faster technique is to consider integrating geochemistry (mineral weathering) and hydrogeology. The chemistry of groundwater, controlled by the weathering of primary rock?minerals and?formation of secondary minerals, can not only be differentiated between geological strata but also within strata as different stages in weathering results in differing impacts on water quality (ie different reactants).Field analysis of pH, electrolytic conductivity (EC), oxidation reduction potential (ORP) and dissolved carbon dioxide together with laboratory analysis of dissolved constituents characterise the chemistry of the water. Collection of rock samples at the time of drilling for bore installation can provide the (only) opportunity to assess the media in which the groundwater resides and migrates through. An assessment of aquifer matrix chemical makeup, via bulk sample chemical analysis, X-ray diffraction (XRD) and petrographic analysis can achieve this.The chemistry of groundwater is dependent on the water velocity. Water at deposition and post-diagenesis dissolution of minerals by hydrolysis and oxidation will result in equilibria of the dissolved phase with the solid phase. Post-depositional fractures caused by either tectonic activity or weathering alter the rate of weathering and thereby the geochemistry. Slow water flow in microfractures results in water in equilibrium with the rock minerals. Faster flow in larger fractures results in water being in disequilibria with rock minerals.Fractures can alter groundwater chemistry by two pathways: changing groundwater velocity, which changes the rate of hydrolysis or oxidation mixing water from different geological strata.Both pathways cause subtle changes in the water chemistry.It is however, the dissolved phase chemical data, which can be observed over time at individual locations and/or at a point in time along a flow path, which allows the hydrogeologist to ælook up-gradientÆ and locate the zone of leakage. Hence, influences on rock/groundwater chemistry, from anthropogenic sources to natural mixing of waters, can be assessed via appropriate interpretation of geochemistry, hydrogeochemistry and flow data.This paper will use the example of the geochemical and hydrogeological characterisation of aquifers within the Hawkesbury and Bulgo Sandstone of the Southern Coalfields to the south of Sydney in New South Wales to demonstrate this approach.CITATION:Stuckey, M and Mulvey, P, 2013. Despite the fact that barium minerals are plentiful and widely distributed in nature, this element is one that we do not yet know how to prepare cheaply in metallic form. This is due to its chemical activity, as evidenced by its great affinity for fluorine, chlorine, oxygen, nitrogen, hydrogen, and sulfur. Furthermore, it forms a very stable subchloride and subfluoride, which prevents isolation of the metal by fusion electrolysis from a halide bath. A good survey of the metallurgy of barium calcium, arid strontium has been made recently in Light Metals (54,55).3/ Metallic magnesium (46), calcium (83), barium, and strontium (27) reduce each other's oxides. Proof of this can be found in the activation of BaO after reduction with Mg, which leads to the formation of so-called "Maquenne" mixtures (58) used for absorbing gases. However, it is impossible to extract the reduced metal- from the residue, a fact that Guntz (25) attributed to the formation of barium suboxide. There is no necessity for presuming the formation of such a compound, as it has boon established that in the reduction there is always formed an alloy of the alkaline-earth metal with the magnesium, which is capable of producing hydrogen when brought into contact with water. The reduction of alkaline earth-metal oxides with aluminum was observed by Mallet (57) in 1877, but recent investigations have shown that the end product of the reaction is an alloy of aluminum with the alkaline earth metal (1,2). Silicon also has been suggested as a reducing agent, and the results obtained are the same (84,85).

Maghemite is a mineral formed from magnetite oxidation at low temperatures, an intermediate term of the magnetite-hematite series. Maghemite could be misidentified as magnetite by X-ray diffraction, and/or as hematite by spot chemical analysis. Nevertheless, non-stoichiometric magnetite was detected and quantified in samples of Brazilian soils and iron ores by the Rietveld method refinement of its structure. The results were confirmed by optical microscopy and Raman spectroscopy, thus validating the method. X-ray diffraction with the refinement of the isomorphic substitution of Fe2+ by Fe3+ along the magnetite-maghemite solid solution could help to suitably characterize maghemite in iron ores.

"Electrolytic Manganese Residue (EMR) was used as the main material to prepare cementing material activator for the utilization of the residue from electrolytic manganese dioxide (EMD) or electrolytic metallic manganese (EMM) production. The effects of chemical activation, thermal activation and mechanical activation on retarding activity and excitation activity of EMR were investigated according to the setting time and activity index of EMR-slag cementing material. The results showed that the EMR exhibited good activating performance after being ball-milled for 18 min and then treated for 1-2 hours at temperature range of 350-450 ?. The optimal properties of cementing material activator were achieved at the weight percent ratio 30 : 3 : 5 of EMR/Ca(OH)2/cement clinker.IntroductionMany hazardous industrial solid wastes such as blast furnace slag, fly ash, steelmaking slag, chromic slag and electrolytic manganese residue [1] are generated n China and their amounts increases every year. The accumulation of the solid wastes during past years is very huge and they could be hardly recycled effectively as a sustainable resource. 2.35 billion tons of industrial solid wastes have been produced up to now [2]. It is estimated that they would exceed 3.3 billion tons by the end of 2015 [3]. On the other hand, the quick development of Chinese infrastructural construction needs more cementing materials. The production of traditional building materials consumes lots of natural resource such as clay and limestone and discharges at least 1 ton CO2 and other pollutants per ton clinker [4]. Therefore, it is necessary to develop new types of cementing materials instead of clinker [5,6]."

The monorail bridge conveyor (MBC) is a prototype continuous face haulage system that was surface tested and evaluated by the Bureau of Mines. The MBC consists of a series of cascading belt bridge conveyors suspended from roof-supported monorail track. Tests were conducted to determine MBC haulage capability, maneuverability, power consumption, and reliability using rigid and chain-suspended monorail track installations. Subsequent modifications to improve operation and reliability made during surface testing are described. Mining plans were devised to show potential MBC installations for room-and-pillar, longwall development, and shortwall mining sections. Compatibility tests were conducted with the Bureau's prototype hopper-feeder, to provide additional surge capacity and lump-breaking capability. Results from the surface test program, along with modifications to improve system operation and reliability, indicate that the MBC has the potential to perform success- fully in an in-mine trial.

Helium used as a tracer gas in petroleum reservoirs continues to show great promise as a new tool for the oil and gas industry, according to tests conducted jointly by the Bureau of Nines and The Pure Oil Co. in-the Cabin Creek field, Boone and Kanawha Counties, W. Va. Helium, when used as a, tracer gas, is mixed with natural gas being injected into a reservoir for secondary recovery of oil, recycling, pressure-maintenance, or other purposes. Three separate experimental helium tracer-gas tests were run in the Cabin Creek, W. Va., field, wherein helium was added as a tracer to the natural gas that was being injected into the oil-bearing Berea sandstone. The results obtained in each test permitted determining the direction and rate of travel of the injected gas, calculating the volume of injected gas in the gas produced at the various wells, and determining the nature of the transition from natural gas to injected gas during a gas-injection program. Data were obtained on the effects obtained from waves of injected gab containing 1 percent and containing 5 percent helium and from a wave of essentially pure helium injected into the formation.

In recent years, due to advances in designing of various magnet assemblies, a wide range of magnetic materials with different properties can be concentrated. Jalal Abad iron ore beneficiation plant, which is located in Iran, Kerman province, is currently producing iron ore concentrate with the capacity of 0.8 Mt/a by having medium intensity magnetic separators (MIMS) with rougher and cleaner stages that finally leads to the production of an iron concentrate with the Fe grade of about 65 per cent. In this plant, the rougher tailings directly goes to the thickener as the final tailings and cleaner tailings feeds to the ball mill for regrinding. Since some hematite particles with weak magnetic properties cannot be recovered from only these two stages of magnetic separation, the obtained tailings from this concentration plant has approximately an iron grade of 25 per cent to 27 per cent. Accordingly, laboratory processing tests were conducted on the obtained representative sample of the final tailings. Based on the experimental results performed on final tailings, a new magnetic drum separator with a specific magnetic assembly was designed that could finally lead to product with iron grade range of 58 per cent to 60 per cent with relative and total weight per cent of 8.6 per cent and 3.86 per cent. Finally, it could be concluded that feeding of magnetite particles to the existing drum separators, due to their high magnetic field intensity, cannot efficiently lead to improvement of the grade of concentrate. Therefore, pilot magnetic separation tests were done on the final concentrate for evaluation of product upgrading probability. Consequently, by increasing another stage of cleaning and by decreasing the magnetic field intensity, the final product grade could be enhanced from 65 per cent to 67 per cent.

A new numerical method is proposed for the solution of multidimensional miscible displacement problems. Besides the usual stationary grid associated with numerical procedures, the method uses moving points for which positions and concentrations are computed each time step. Based on the method of characteristics for treating combined transport and dispersion, the method applies equally well to any number of dimensions and, in contrast with other numerical procedures, properly takes into account the physical dispersion, no matter how small. Extensive tests show that accurate solutions of one-dimensional problems can be obtained over a wide range of values of the dispersion coefficient, including zero. They also show that the moving points do not need to be uniformly spaced, and that increasing the number of moving points beyond 2/grid interval does not significantly improve the accuracy of the solution. Two-dimmsional calculations using the new method were carried out to simulate laboratory model displacements in which gravity caused overriding of solvent. Good agreement between observed and computed profiles and measured and computed concentrations of produced fluid was obtained for a viscosity ratio of 1.89; at higher viscosity ratios, fair agreement was obtained Computed results were found to be significantly affected by vertical dispersion, and negligibly affected by dispersion in the direction of flow, in agreement with conclusions based on experimental observations. INTRODUCTION Although miscible displacement processes are potentially of great economic significance, limited progress has been made in developing mathematical methods for predicting the outcome of a solvent flood. Because of the complexity of the partial differential equations which describe multidimensional miscible displacement, numerical methods are a natural approach to their solution. The task of finding suitable numerical approximations to one of the partial differential equations, which involves both dispersion and convective transport, has been particularly difficult. Dispersion in the absence of transport is described by the heat flow equation, a second-order equation of parabolic type. This equation has been very successfully treated by numerical methods. Transport in the absence of dispersion is described by a first-order equation of hyperbolic type. This equation has been treated numerically with some success in one dimension, both by Lagrangian and Eulerian techniques, 1.2 but extension to two or more dimensions has not been satisfactorily accomplished. Usually one of two things happens: either the numerical solution develops oscillations or it becomes smeared by artificial dispersion resulting from the numerical process. When transport and dispersion are considered simultaneously, this numerical dispersion may dominate the low physical dispersivicy that generally characterizes miscible displacement. Stone and Brian2 have developed a new difference equation for treating combined transport and dispersion in one dimension. By suitable choice of certain parameters, they succeeded in markedly reducing both oscillation and numerical dispersion. However, a satisfactory extension to higher dimensions has not yet been found. Peaceman and Rachford3 presented a centered-in-time and centered-in-distance difference equation combined with a 1,transfer of overshoot" procedure which was demonstrated to work well in one dimension. The technique was applied to the two-dimensional miscible displacement problem, but subsequent calculations with zero dispersivity showed little change in results compared with the calculations they presented. This indicates that their method involved a numerical dispersion of the same order as the physical dispersion. his summary of international mineral exploration activities for the year 2011 draws upon available information from industry sources, published literature and U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) specialists. The summary provides data on exploration budgets by region and mineral commodity, identifies significant mineral discoveries and areas of mineral exploration, discusses government programs affecting the mineral exploration industry and presents [ ] analyses of exploration activities performed by the mineral industry. Three sources of information are reported and analyzed in this annual review of international exploration: 1) budgetary statistics expressed in U.S. nominal dollars provided by Metals Economics Group (MEG) of Halifax, Nova Scotia; 2) regional and site-specific exploration activities that took place in 2011 as compiled by the USGS and 3) regional events including economic, social and political conditions that affected exploration activities, which were derived from published sources and unpublished discussions with USGS and industry specialists.

Agitation requirements in oxidation autoclaves can vary widely depending on the mineralogy of the feed material and the specific process selected. Before selecting an agitation system it is important that the client specify the desired throughput, mineralogy, chemistry, kinetics, compartments, overall retention time, and the desired oxygen utilization. In selecting the agitation system, the factors mentioned above as well as oxygen solubility, oxygen mass transfer coefficients, and specific power are evaluated. Much research effort has been directed toward open tank systems for fermentation and oxidation processes. However, for high pressure autoclave oxidation processes little information is available. In this review the author's experience in the autoclave industry and some of the available literature are utilized to compare the installed power per unit volume with some of the methods proposed for open tank oxidation. Equations that appear to give results close to that experienced in the industry have been identified. Further work is required in this area to develop a higher degree of confidence in the ability to predict the power required for any given case.

The future development of nickel laterite deposits is crucial with regards to satisfying impending nickel demands. The commercial implementation of new hydro/pyrometallurgical processes in recent years has led to significant improvements in the extraction of nickel from the laterite ores. One potential alternative pyrometallurgical processing route would be to selectively reduce the nickel and produce a concentrate with nickel contents similar to those attainable in the conventional flotation of sulphide ores. However, even bench scale studies have not yet been able to produce a high grade (>15% nickel) concentrate from a low grade laterite ore. The present research involved the microwave vacuum reduction roasting of a nickel laterite ore to yield a high grade concentrate, rich in nickel. Firstly, the effects of temperature and pressure on the nickel grade and recovery were investigated using a thermodynamic model. Secondly, briquettes containing a mixture of charcoal and a low grade silicate nickel laterite ore were reacted in a microwave vacuum system. The experimental variables studied were the input microwave energy, pressure and absorbed microwave power. Thirdly, the ferronickel in the reacted briquette was concentrated by magnetic separation and nickel grades of up to 21% could be achieved.

This report describes the tri-n-butyl phosphate extraction of cerium (IV) from a sulfate leach liquor prepared from a bastnaesite concentrate as well as from pure eerie nitrate solutions. The work was done on a laboratory scale using separatory funnels. Extraction from pure cerium solutions entailed no great difficulties; however, extraction from the bastnaesite solution proved more difficult, mainly because of the inhibiting effect of the sulfate ion. Despite this, procedures were developed for obtaining good single-state cerium extraction (95+ percent) and a high-purity product (99+ percent), although the maximization of both cannot be achieved simultaneously. This necessitates a compromise in any extraction scheme.

This publication contains routine analyses and related source data for 374 natural gas samples from 24 States and 5 foreign countries. These samples were collected during calendar year 1966 as a part of a continuous survey of the free world for occurrences of helium in natural gas. This survey has been conducted in the United States by the Bureau of Mines since 1917. In late 1965, the survey was expanded to include foreign gasfields. The analyses of foreign samples contained in this publication represent the first samples received as a result of this expanded program. The analyses published herein were made by mass spectrometer and a special helium analysis apparatus, which are described in Bureau of Mines Bulletins 4863 and 576.4 Eight previous publications have been made to present the results of 7,244 gas analyses made? by the Bureau of Mines Helium Activity prior to 1966. "New contracts for 65 million long tons of coking coal valued at over $900 million, over the next 15 years, herald the rebirth of Alberta's coal industry. The industry is optimistic that export orders may reach 20 million tons per annum by the mid-1970's. Coal will be extracted from underground and surface mines and it is expected that the total labour force will double from the present 1,200 men within the next two years. Ali the health hazards associated with coal mining are likely to be encountered and it will be incombent on the Provincial Department of Health to specify the standards which relate to health and environment where no such standards have previously existed. I would like to thank you for spending the time with me today to review the FLIR PathFindIR thermal imaging camera system: It is truly an innovative safety system that has the added benefit of offering increased efficiency Our company the Winsted Group, specializes in mobile video systems that are fully customizable to address standard and unique operational requirements in a variety of industries from heavy equipment cameras to police and military digital recording systems, high end video camera systems are a hallmark of Winsted?s product line. The use of thermal imaging camera systems to enhance mobile safety is a relatively new concept as it relates to their use in both transportation and heavy equipment operation. This technology, like so many before it, has been adopted for civilian use from its military roots. The identification of enemy combatants through their heat signature has given our troops a decisive edge in military operations in total darkness Likewise, the ability to discern people and objects that give off heat is a significant step forward in collision and accident avoidance. The PathFindIR camera system that I am demonstrating today is so advanced that it cannot be exported outside of continental North America without a US government approved export license I would like to commence my presentation with a short video clip that discusses the technology associated with the FLIR PathFindIR Thermal Imaging camera systems. The video demonstrates the operational effectiveness of thermal imaging camera systems installed on a vehicle operating on the roadway at night, of course there are definite parallels to use in a mining environment, primarily the fact that lighting is limited and the chance for vision limiting dust is ever present. We are, of course more concerned with personnel safety in our mines than encountering wildlife on the roadside. From the same perspective, the transport driver is just as concerned with encountering a stalled vehicle as our mine truck operators are with other mine traffic.
