The Cadia Hill concentrator at Newcrest’s Cadia Operations has undergone several modifications and upgrades to treat an increased throughput rate of harder ore from the Cadia East block cave mine.Subsequent to the commissioning of the expanded circuit, the flotation cleaner block has undergone a systematic optimisation programme tackling all facets of circuit operation. For the first time in many years, the Liebherr Group chose to host its annual conference for the international construction trade press in the United States. The reason for the move is simple ? mining. Like other large corporations, especially those in the construction fields, Liebherr felt the effects of the global economic crisis that began in 2008. The slowdown in the housing market was especially hard on Liebherr?s mobile crane and earth moving divisions. The mining division, however, while affected by crashing commodity prices that led to cancelled orders and the loss of financing for some customers, was not battered as badly as the other divisions. And now, with the price of commodities once again on the rise, it seems that it will be Liebherr?s largest machines that lead the family-owned company to better days. ?We can report that our generally optimistic view during the crisis has proved adequate,? said Joachim Janka, president of Liebherr mining equipment, at the conference in Williamsburg, VA, just down the road from the company?s mining truck division global headquarters in Newport News, VA. ?Since the third quarter of 2009, our mining equipment activities have been recording once more a strong and steady demand. This has already yielded a substantial increase in market shares for our product lines of large mining shovels as well as for mining trucks.?

"Despite the pre-eminence of the Jwaneng Diamond Mine as the world’s richest diamond mine, the discovery story has long been clouded in mystery. This is the 45-year old untold story of the Jwaneng discovery and contemporaneous Bechuanaland/Botswana political and socioeconomic history. Diamond exploration by De Beers in Bechuanaland began in 1955, with the first true kimberlite discovery near Letlhakane in 1967, before Clifford’s Rule was applied and before the use of indicator mineral chemistry. Surface deflation soil sampling and bioturbation by termites was the foundation for exploration into the Kalahari. The 1962 reconnaissance programme south of Jwaneng had failed to make any discoveries. Improved sampling methods were applied to the Kalaharicovered areas in 1969 and positive results were received by year-end. The Whateley’s Wish percussion drill-hole in December 1972 was confirmed as Jwaneng 2424D/K2 with drill core in early 1973. Jumper drills were required to penetrate the Kalahari sand cover. Diamond resources were demonstrated despite multiple technical problems. IntroductionThe Jwaneng Diamond Mine is, by value, the world’s richest diamond mine. Harry Oppenheimer is quoted as saying that Jwaneng is ‘the most important primary deposit found anywhere in the world since the discovery at Kimberley more than a century ago.’ (Taylor III, 1982) The mine opened in 1982 after some nine years of evaluation and construction since discovery in February 1973. Debswana (2017) states that 2015 production was 7.87 Mt of ore from which 10.408 million carats were recovered at a grade of 132 carats per 100 t (cpht). Although the value is not reported, it was noted that Jwaneng contributes 60–70% of Debswana’s total revenue from all mines, including Orapa, Damtshaa, and Letlhakane (Debswana, 2017)."

The subject of transverse fissures in steel rails has been discussed very thoroughly in recent years from various points of view and the final opinions expressed may be roughly classified into two groups: That these fissures are the result merely of fatigue of the steel and are independent of the quality of the metal. That the quality of the metal and the mill practice must have something to do with them. The first point of view was most ably and logically presented by J. E. Howard,' and in the discussion of this paper, as well as in several other preceding publications, Dr. P. H. Dudley, Consulting Engineer of the New York Central Lines, has strongly defended the other opinion.2 The steel makers of the country have naturally rallied under Mr. Howard's banner, hoping to place the entire blame for these failures upon the railroads with their high wheel-loads, hard steel, heavy traffic, and sometimes inferior road-bed; while the railroad men, on the other hand, have been busy accumulating statistics and records in the effort to find an actual reason in the rails themselves that would account for the seemingly haphazard occurrence of transverse fissures under varying conditions and at widely separated points. The view that these fissures were due merely to normal fatigue under alternating stresses seemed most reasonable to the writer until quite recently, because from work done in this laboratory, as well as the work of other investigators, of the problem, no structural differences, in the vast majority of cases, were found between metal at the nuclei of transverse fissures and metal at similar positions in the same rails or in other rails that had not developed fissures. World resources of platinum-group metals appear ample for the foreseeable future; however, political and economic events in the last two decades have caused concern over the availability and reliability of an uninterrupted supply. Because of this concern, the U.S. Congress requested that the U.S. Bureau of Mines initiate a study of the flow of platinum-group metals in the economy that would delineate and quantify the production areas in which metal values are lost. As a result, the Bureau has developed a computerized commodity flow model for strategic and critical materials. Major attributes of this flow model are as follows: (1) it is generic and applicable to most commodities and (2) it can be updated as supply, demand, and/or production data change. The original model developed for cobalt, with slight modifications, was used to track the flow of platinum-group metals. This report follows the flow of platinum-group metals through their metallurgical, catalytic, and chemical applications and highlights areas in which significant losses occur because of downgrading, export, or disposal. The study indicates that materials containing about 63,426 kg of platinum-group metals were lost or could not be traced in 1989, representing about 63 pct of U.S. domestic consumption.

The Chinese energy and mineral industries are readying themselves for a period of dynamic transition, unprecedented in the country's long and sometimes turbulent history. The transition comes as a result of the government's new program of "Four Modernizations" in its agricultural, defense, industry, and science and technology sectors. The announced program is generally considered by Western observers to be a moderate, pragmatic approach to get China on the road to industrial parity with Western nations by the year 2000. The game plan calls for integration with the West to beef up Chinese know-how and the purchase of foreign technology to supplement areas where China lacks the ability to do so itself. While the role of energy and minerals is not specifically mentioned in the program, it was made clear to ME that China realizes the basis of any sustained modernization program is tied closely to the health of its minerals sector. Various published reports have indicated the existence of an already vibrant energy and minerals sector with world rank production in coal, iron ore, tin, antimony, cement, pyrite, asbestos and tungsten to name just a few. For the most part, except for the export metals, the primary focus of China's production has been on fulfilling domestic needs. Now the new initiatives are aimed not only at self-sufficiency, but also on propelling the country's natural resource clout into international prominence. With a mineral resource base that is considered by many westerners a potential bonanza, China's new long march toward modernization will be an exciting adventure, well worth watching. Big Projects Spark Excitement China's renewed commitment to a more liberal program is as much a desire to "walk on its own two legs" as it is a backlash from the frustrating years that followed the Cultural Revolution of the 1960s and early 1970s. Much of the early excitement was initiated by China's Premier and Party Chairman Hua Guo-feng in speaking to the fifth National People's Congress (NPC) in 1978. Here, Chairman Hua presented the Communist Party's 10-year blueprint for economic development. Specifically, the Party's plans called for completion of 120 large-scale industrial projects by 1985. The Bureau of Mines is testing super critical fluids as solvents to selectively extract valuable components from complex matrices. Materials recovered during supercritical fluid extraction are often highly purified. Using laboratory apparatus designed specifically for supercritical fluid research, Bureau re-searchers have measured the solubility of titanium tetrachloride (TiCI4) in supercritical, liquid, and gaseous carbon dioxide (C02), CO2, a commonly used supercritical fluid, is inert, inexpensive, and nontoxic. Supercritical CO2 formed a single phase with TiCl4 at 45° C and 1,500 psig. When the solution was heated at constant pressure beyond 55° C, TiCl4 precipitated from the fluid. Results showed that TiCl4 solubility in supercritical CO2 is not controlled by the vapor pressure of the solute.

Introduction 1. Factors on Which the Design of the Roaster Plant was Based The roasting operation at Lake Shore, it was realized from the outset, would be profitable only if costs and losses could be reduced to a low figure. It was absolutely imperative that the operation should be self roasting over the whole range of tonnages and sulphur grades which might obtain during the life of the mine. The roasting operation could not bear the cost in fuel and labour of even a partially fired roast. To meet this requirement, it was necessary to resort to additional insulation in the construction of the roaster and to provide a more flexible means of rabble cooling than the conventional water jacket (see p. 31). A second basic consideration was that of handling a wet, putty-like concentrate. The operating costs of a drier ruled out the possibility of drying the charge before feeding it to the roaster. Moreover, the dusting which would result from charging a dry product virtually all -40 micron (325 mesh) in size would seriously handicap the use of a dryer. Dust lubrication (p. 3S) due to the back-mixing action of the Edwards rabbles, and the use of a Sullivan slapper ( p. 27) on the concentrate filter, completely solved the problem of handling the roast feed. The third consideration was the reduction of dusting to a sufficiently low point that a Cottrell or other dust collecting system was unnecessary. The Edwards roaster when properly supervised, it is believed, can be operated to give the minimum possible dusting. At Lake Shore, the evidence has been that less than 1 per cent dusting occurs at any time and that the greater part of the dust produced is recovered either in the spray tower or in the dust chambers.

O desenvolvimento de materiais renováveis e biodegradáveis é uma vertente que almeja a diminuição dos custos e dos impactos ambientais. Nesse âmbito, o presente trabalho visa o desenvolvimento de novos materiais, fabricados com fibras vegetais e que possam substituir outros que são derivados do petróleo. Fibras vegetais foram utilizadas e devidamente modificadas por mercerização e acetilação com o intuito de produzir materiais com compatibilidade química. Foram obtidos, nesse trabalho, compósitos de polietileno reciclado reforçados com fibras de sisal[1]. Utilizamos a ferramenta estatística denominada distribuição de Weibull, para prever as falhas mecânicas dos sistemas estudados. Foi possível observarmos que o compósito resultante teve uma melhora relativa em suas propriedades mecânicas, o que pôde ser comprovado por meio dos ensaios de tração. A distribuição de Weibull foi uma ferramenta que produziu resultados de acordo com os esperados, comprovando a melhoria de propriedades mecânicas do material.

A computer simulation has been carried out to predict the distribution behavior of minor elements such as Pb. Zn, Bi, Sb and As in recently proposed copper smelting and converting processes with submerged oxygen injection in which tonnage oxygen is used with a shielding gas. In this study the technique of stepwise equilibrium modeling was employed and some of the thermodynamic data were updated or reassessed. The volatilization and slagging of undesirable elements were investigated in copper smelting (steady-state) system, copper matte converting (batch) system, and the combined (smelting + converting) system at extremly high oxygen-enrichment levels. The predicted minor-element behavior under high oxygen- enrichment was compared with that in the Noranda process (normally 42% oxygen-enrichment in smelting and 24% in converting) and the reverberatory process using air. The effects of various operating parameters such as temperature, the final matte grade in smelting, the initial matte grade in converting and the O/Fe ratio in slag on the behavior of minor elements are discussed.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines constructed a full-scale model of a 15-ft-wide coal mine entry to use in combination with finite-element analyses to investigate roof support systems and various types of roof bolts. The objective was to enhance understanding of the fundamental mechanics of the interaction between rock and supports and the relative integrity of bolted mine roof as a function of roof bolt type, length, spacing, and tension, and the basic characteristics of the roof strata. The laboratory test results, when correlated with computer simulations using fmite-element analysis and underground verification tests, should provide a basis for desigillng safer, more cost-effective roof control systems and help to establish guidelines for employing fully grouted resin and mechanically anchored bolting systems. The background for this research, the research approach, the methods and equipment employed, and the results are described in this report.

"Slag density is a significant factor in determining the process efficiency of the electroslag remelting (ESR) process, where calcium fluoride (CaF2)-based slag is formed synthetically to refine metal ingots. Although there are some former studies investigating the density of CaF2-containing slags, the prediction models focusing on them are applicable only to some specific systems. The present study aims to build a model to predict density for a wide range of CaF2-containing ESR slags. To investigate density for various slag compositions, CaF2-Al2O3-based and CaF2-Al2O3-CaO-based slag compositions were prepared. Additionally, some minor constituents like FeO, MgO and MnO were added to a 5:3:2 CaF2-Al2O3-CaO slag in order to investigate the effects of these constituents on the slag. The volumes of the prepared slags were measured in a tube furnace at 1450-1550 °C using the sessile drop technique, and their densities were calculated. The results showed that for the slags, density is related to optical basicity, and therefore a prediction model based on an Arrhenius equation was built. The model was tested with data from literature, and its limitations and validity are discussed.IntroductionThe electroslag remelting (ESR) process is a refining method in which a metal ingot is remelted under a synthetic slag. These synthetic ESR slags are mainly composed of calcium fluoride (CaF2), calcium oxide (CaO) and aluminum oxide (Al2O3). Other constituents like iron oxide (FeO), magnesium oxide (MgO), manganese oxide (MnO) and chromium oxide (Cr2O3) are added to this system in relatively low amounts, according to the type of steel ingot to be refined. The prediction of slag properties, such as electrical conductivity, viscosity and density, is crucial for the selection of the synthetic slag in order to obtain the required process parameters, like temperature, the passing time of the molten metal droplet through the slag, and metal-slag separation (Akbari, Reitz and Friedrich, 2009; Hara and Ogino, 1981; Mattar, El-Faramawy and Fathy, 2002; Mehrabi, Rahimipour and Shokuhfar, 2005; Presoly, Korp and Schneider, 2008).As slag density affects metal-slag separation in the ESR process, predicting the density of an ESR slag is important for appropriate refining and improved product quality. Although there are many studies investigating the density of slags (Akbari, Reitz and Friedrich, 2009; Aune, Hayashi and Sridhar, 2005; Hara and Ogino, 1981; Matsushita, 2011; Mills and Keene, 1987, 1981; Seetharaman et al., 2013; Shu, 2007; Shu and Chou, 2013; Sikora and Zielinski, 1974; Xu et al., 2012; Zhang and Chou, 2010), the prediction models built are generally valid for oxide-containing slags (Aune, Hayashi and Sridhar, 2005; Bottinga and Weill, 1970; Mills and Keene, 1987; Seetharaman et al., 2013; Shu, 2007; Xu et al., 2012; Zhang and Chou, 2010). These models were built on either the molar volumes of the constituents (Bottinga and Weill, 1970; Mills and Keene, 1987) or the thermodynamically calculated enthalpy or free energy of mixing, which can be applied to a system containing constituents sharing an ion, such as an O- ion for oxide systems (Aune, Hayashi and Sridhar, 2005; Hillert, 1980; Persson et al., 2007). Some recent studies modeled the density of some oxide slags on their optical basicity (Shu, 2007; Shu and Chou, 2013; Xu et al., 2012; Zhang and Chou, 2010)."

Discussion by B. Beatty This is a response to M.J. Hrebar's paper, which tracks in detail the highly productive stripping capabilities of modern large bulldozers at two separate installations. It proves the old adage "economies of scale" and quantifies the advantage of being able to move large loads of dirt over comparatively short haul distances by sliding rather than carrying the load. This discussion examines whether a bulldozer is the most efficient way of using this geotechnical principle. Case 1 - Study eastern US: Contour coal stripping application The energy consumption for the Case 1 mining method (eastern US contour stripping operation) shows the D11 averaged 117 L (31 gal) of diesel fuel per scheduled hour, and produced 333.3 bank m3 (436 bank cu yd) per scheduled hour (0.351 L/m3). Assuming 1 L (0.26 gal) of diesel fuel contains 10.4 kW-hr of energy, the unit expenditure of fuel energy for Case 1 Study was 3.66 kWh/m3. Another way of shifting this material is by using an overburden slusher (OS), as shown in Fig. 1. The OS as shown in Fig. I. The OS is electrically powered and consists of a manned low wall winch (LW ), a remote controlled (radio telemetry) highwall winch (HW) and a hoe. The winches operate to pull the hoe back and forth across the pit. The hoe carries load in the forward direction ahead of a rear mounted blade and returns empty. A spreadsheet (Lotus 123) simulation package, BOSSIM, models the OS operation on a load by load basis over a wide range of pit configurations. The geometry shown in Fig. 2 of the paper was modeled using BOSSI M and the results are summarized in Table1. Table 1 shows a LW with 150 kW (200 hp) and a HW of 120 kW (160 hp) installed power, towing a 15-m3 (19-cu yd) hoe, would accomplish the Case 1 stripping task at about the same scheduled stripping rate (D11=333 m3/hr or 433 cu yd/ hour, OS=342 m3/hr or 447 cu yd/ hour). It was assumed the winches in this equipment have an electromechanical efficiency of 90%. This gives an average electrical energy expenditure rate of 151 kW-hr, and a unit energy expenditure level of 0.44 kWhr/m-3(0.57 cu yd/kWh)-an improvement of 8291%- over the D11 alternative. The energy comparison illustrates the importance of using more efficient electric power if possible, ahead of the internal combustion engine, and delivering power from a fixed ground position rather than through a moving track system. Another important energy observation is the comparative action of the dozer blade and the OS hoe. The former implement continuously digs and spills as it works the load forward. The OS hoe digs the load until full, the blade then lifts due to the contained load pressure and a shear plane forms under the mass, enabling it to slide forward in a force reduced - transporting mode. Economic comparison Table 2 operating cost per scheduled hour and unit cost comparison follows a format used in Tables 2 and 3 of Hrebar's paper and compares Case 1 Study with the OS alternative. Drill and blast costs are kept constant in both cases, although when larger OS units are considered, it is expected these costs will reduce because bigger hoe sizes will permit larger rocks to be transported efficiently.

The Act of Congress approved June 25, 1926 (Public Act 424, 69th Congress), authorized joint investigations by the U. S. Geological Survey and the U. S. Bureau of Mines to determine "the location, extent, and mode of occurrence of potash deposits in the United States." The particular deposits selected for exploration were the extensive rock-salt formations underlying large areas in western Texas and southeastern New Mexico, from which potash salts had been identified in the cuttings and sludges from oil wells drilled with cable tools. The evidence of these sludge samples was qualitative only and beyond definitely proving the presence of potash salts in the salt beds, gave little clue to the possible size, richness, or extent of the potash occurrences.

WHEN we consider the efforts made in Europe to promote the physical and moral well-being of the working classes, the question is suggested whether in this country, where, theoretically, every man is peculiarly the arbiter of his own destiny, we may not be too prone to expect every man to take care of himself, and neglect to make those provisions for the welfare of the employed, demanded alike by enlightened economy and humanity. In the older countries, where the disproportion between capital and labor is greater, and the working classes are more dependent, their welfare largely occupies the attention of employers. The subject is involved in the problem of the just relations of capital and labor, and we are rapidly approaching the time, if we have not already reached it, when a generous paternal interest in the welfare of the employed should be more generally manifested. It is a subject which is of special importance to mine-owners and engineers in this country, especially to those located in the coal regions. My own attention has been particularly directed to it by a visit made to the Hassard collieries, a few miles from Liege, Belgium, under the direction of M. Andrimont. This celebrated engineer has established a comfortable home for the miners near the mouth of the shaft of the mine. It has been highly successful and beneficent in its results, and may to a great degree be regarded as a, model for such undertakings. It is known as "Hotel Louise," this being the name of Madame d'Andrimont, who laid the corner-stone of the building April 4th, 1871. The structure is of brick, upon three sides of a square, and

This report describes in detail the results of petrographic research conducted on 21 phosphate ores representing important deposits in southwestern Montana , southeastern Idaho , and northeastern Utah . The ores are described and categorized by mineralogical and chemical composition , thermal behavior of organic carbon , and textural constitution . Descriptive and genetic classification schemes applicable to western phosphate ores are discussed ; results from related studies made of the collophane mineralogy are also presented . The latter studies were centered on determining unit - cell dimensions and CO₂ , P2O5 , and fluorine content of collophane concentrates of 11 high - grade phosphate- rock hand specimens selected solely for this purpose . On the basis of this investigation , operational methods have been developed for quantitatively describing textural and compositional features that are likely to be significant in determining the response of phosphate ores to conventional beneficiation treatments ; systems for classifying the ores in relation to these features have been proposed . Studies to date point out distinct textural and compositional variations in the western phosphates and illustrate their importance in determining optimum beneficiation procedure .

In the mineral processing industry, Ni-Cu-Fe-S converter matte is leached to remove base metals from a concentrate containing platinum group metals (PGMs). We investigated the atmospheric leaching process to develop a better understanding of the leaching behaviour of the base metals (Cu, Fe, and Ni) and the PGMs, in particular Ru, Ir, and Rh with respect to key process variables, acid concentration, and Cu concentration under oxidative and non-oxidative conditions. With oxidative leaching, a higher initial acid concentration resulted in higher Cu, Ni, and Fe extractions, as well as faster leaching reaction rates. A higher initial acid concentration also resulted in faster precipitation of Cu, Ru, and Ir under oxidizing conditions. Under non-oxidative conditions, Ni and Fe extraction was much slower, and the effect of initial acid concentration on Cu precipitation was less pronounced. The initial Cu concentration had a slightly smaller effect on the leaching behaviour of Fe and Ni, as well as precipitation of Ru, Ir and Rh. Moreover, a higher initial Cu concentration suppressed both Ni and Fe leaching and had a slight inhibiting effect on the precipitation behaviour of Cu, Ru, and Ir.

The Nation's mining and quarrying industries have again met the annual challenge to their ingenuity--that of reducing disabling work injuries among their employees. The effectiveness of management in facing this problem and in meeting this responsibility is evident from the results of the 1961 National Safety Competition. Three hundred ninety-three or 45.3 percent of the mines and quarries participating in the competition established a new record number of participants operating throughout the competition year without a disabling work injury. Another record established in the 1961 contest was the number of participants (868) enrolled in the competition. This annual safety competition was begun in 1925 and is conducted by the Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior. It provides for six bronze Sentinels of safety trophies which are awarded each year to the winning participant in each group. Since its inception, the competition has exerted a strong influence in the field of safety promotion. The statistical record of its accomplishments over the years gives strong support to the theory that well-organized and well- administered safety programs are effective tools to be used to reduce the number of disabling work injuries. It stimulates and holds the interest of employees and management in accident prevention. Because of this, mines and quarries participating in the contest have a more favorable safety record than those operations not enrolled.
