The Bureau of Mines located and examined 292 burning coal refuse banks throughout the Nation's coal-producing regions in 1968. These coal waste fires, extending over 3,200 acres, produce poisonous, acrid gases and particulate matter that pose a threat to health and safety in the surrounding areas, damage vegetation, and cause the deterioration of nearby structures and buildings. Methods of extinguishing coal refuse fires are discussed, and an approach to eliminating future occurrences of these fires is presented.

Data presented on the physical characteristics of the reservoir oil, Aneth field, represent the initial phase of a study of Paradox basin reservoir oils being made by petroleum engineers of the Federal Bureau of Mines, Petroleum Research Center, Laramie, Wyo. The purpose of the study is to determine the original reservoir-oil characteristics in several important new discoveries in the Paradox Basin and to investigate correlations between the properties of these reservoir oils and structural or areal position within the basin, If migration is limited and oil accumulates near its source, then it seems probable that few differences should be found in the composition and characteristics of reservoir oils occurring in given age rocks and within the confines of a geological basin. Within these limits, conditions that effected the formation of oil and its transfer from parent to storage rocks probably were rather uniform in an area the size of most of our geological basins. However, if oils should migrate considerable distances, it seems logical to expect that the relative quantities of gas and liquid components may differ in traps occurring along the direction of migration, corresponding with the theory of differential entrapment (5).4/

"Mining geology as a defined profession is only about 100 years old. The successful modern mine geologist needs to be a multidisciplinarian, but also needs to maintain a focus on the key outputs of the role. The technical skills needed in the role have increased as mining methods move to increasingly mechanised techniques. As well as being the guardian of the orebody and ensuring minimal dilution to expected ore grades, the mine geologist should be competent in the 12-point mine geology process. A field representative modeling of the gob behavior is critical for the understanding of the associated mechanics of strata behavior in longwall workings. The findings of theoretical models and laboratory tests on the simulated gob material have shown the strain hardening behavior of the gob material. The double-yield material model, which is a built-in constitutive model in FLAC3D, has significant potential to simulate the gob compaction process as it represents materials which undergo irreversible compaction in addition to shear yielding. Apart from this, several researchers have attempted using modified elastic model or applied nodal force in reaction to the strain in the gob area as per the well-known theoretical relations to meet this requirement. Although these models can simulate the mechanical response of the gob for subcritical and critical extraction widths, they do not apply to supercritical extraction width as the gob stress may exceed the in situ stress level in such cases. For overcoming these limitations, a standard approach has been developed and validated in this paper, which can be used for simulating the gob behavior in supercritical longwall workings as well. The complete study is divided into two stages wherein the laboratory scale compression test on the simulated gob material has been numerically replicated to develop preliminary confidence followed by a parametric study of the double-yield constitutive parameters for a rational estimation of their values in different conditions. The calibrated model has been used for verifying its results by plane strain modeling of two different longwall workings, using well-established empirical and analytical findings and field observations. The approach suggested in this study can be used for the efficient modeling of the gob behavior of longwall panels under varying geo-mining conditions without compromising the accuracy of the numerical model. The meticulously validated model can be helpful in rational estimation of stress redistributions around the gob area apart from load transfer on the barrier pillar.

After a stagnant performance in 1982, gross national product (GNP), industrial production, and employment increased during 1983 in nearly all industrial nations, with the U.S. performance generally leading the uneven worldwide recovery. Real U.S. GNP increased 3.3 percent in 1983 (table I). Although investment in nonresidential structures declined, total nonresidential fixed investment in the United States was up 1.5 percent following a 1982 decrease. The increase in worldwide industrial activity and demand in 1983 put greater pressure on prices in many countries. Prices increased from less than 3 percent in the Federal Republic of Germany, Japan, the Nether-lands, and Switzerland to as much as 10 percent in nearly all the other Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development nations. The annual inflation rate in the United States was 4.3 percent (based on the GNP fixed-weight price index).

Disruption in critical minerals supply chains has resulted in the evaluation of various types of mineral deposits for critical minerals potential. Much of the study on critical minerals focuses on occurrence and characterization, but little research has addressed what concentrations of critical minerals in a mineral deposit are required to make an exploration target into an operating mine. Understanding the cut-off grades of ore deposits being actively mined is one criterion to determine if concentrations in an exploration target are high enough. Cut-off grade is defined as the minimum amount of mineral contained in a ton of ore that is sent to the processing plant. Among many factors, cut-off grade depends upon the size and type of the deposit and mining operation, the processing technique, and market prices. This research does not aim to define cut-offs for determining if a mineral deposit is economic. Rather, it defines estimates of concentrations of critical minerals that could be considered good enough for further exploration. For example, ~2% total rare earth oxide (TREO) is the cut-off grade for Mt. Pass carbonatite, but 500 ppm TREO could be an exploration target for coals.

A part of the liquidus of the magnesium-zirconium system was determined by chemical analysis of suction samples taken from the melt in the approximate temperature range of 850° to 1,450° C. The melt was prepared in a furnace pressurized with an inert gas. The average zirconium value in weight-percent of the liquidus composition at each sampling temperature was 0.96 at 867° C, 1.40 at 1,062° C, 2.05 at 1,262° C, and 2.96 at 1,402° C. The equilibrium solid phase was zirconium.

The Cuyuna iron range in Crow Wing County, Minn., is the principal producer of manganiferous iron ore in the United States. The ore is mined from a manganiferous iron formation in the bedrock of the Cuyuna district. This iron formation is divided into two general lithologic types-thin-bedded and thick-bedded. The unoxidized, thin-bedded iron formation is composed of iron silicate with associated fine-grained carbonates of iron and manganese. The thick-bedded iron formation carries iron and manganese oxides with intimately associated silica. Oxidation and leaching of the original iron formation have been the most influential factors in producing manganiferous iron-ore concentrations in quantities large enough to exploit on a commercial basis. The unoxidized and the partly oxidized and enriched iron-formation materials are suitable as a source of ferrograde manganese ore. These materials have been classified according to their amenability to mineral dressing and degree of oxidation and leaching.

Os aços de alta resistência microligados ao nióbio tem se demonstrado uma solução ótima na fabricação de aços para utilização em perfis estruturais utilizando os conceitos já desenvolvidos para a indústria de gás e óleo. O nióbio com seu efeito refinador de grãos, com redução da temperatura de transformação entre austenitaferrita, endurecimento por precipitação e retardamento da recristalização da austenita, usado em equilíbrio com titânio, manganês e silício e os novos processos de produção com resfriamento controlado torna possível a obtenção de aços com microestrutura bainítica, baixo carbono e alta resistência mecânica. Este trabalho demonstra os pontos de destaque referentes ao projeto de estruturas utilizando estes aços, bem como uma avaliação quanto ao processo de soldagem durante a fabricação das mesmas. É possível evidenciar que a estrutura final se torna ideal para aplicação em diversos ambientes devido a sua baixa temperatura de transição dúctil-frágil, produção de uma estrutura com cerca de 10% a menos em peso, 5% a menos em custo e com excelente soldabilidade.

Muito se tem estudado sobre materiais alternativos, como os compósitos de matriz polimérica reforçados por fibras lignocelulósicas. Isso se justifica pelo fato das fibras naturais terem vantagens no que tange ao meio ambiente, bem como relativo baixo custo. Além disso, a fibra natural apresenta características de interface com a matriz polimérica que favorecem as propriedades mecânicas pela estrutura do compósito. Esse presente trabalho objetiva analisar as propriedades de tração de compósitos de matriz de poliéster reforçados com 10,20 e 30% em fração volumétrica de fibras de cânhamo, que foram preparados alinhando as fibras em moldes e deixando-os curar por 24 horas em temperatura ambiente. Os corpos de prova foram testados numa máquina de ensaios Instron e os resultados mostraram um aumento na tensão máxima de ruptura com o aumento da porcentagem de fibra incorporada.

Crystalline silica (quartz, cristobalite, and tridyrnite) is regulated by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) because of its potential for causing debilitating but nonmalignant lung diseases. In 1987, the International Agency for Research Against Cancer (IARC) conducted a review of the health literature and concluded that crystalline silica was a probable human carcinogen. As a result of this finding, OSHA was required to regulate crystalline silica under its Hazard Communication Standard (HCS). The standard requires that all materials handled by OSHA-regulated facilities be labeled according to the requirements of RCS and that workers receive proper training on the handling of the material if the crystalline silica content equals or exceeds 0.1 weight percent (0.1 %). MSHA currently is considering enacting its own RCS. This will be similar to OSHA's RCS. If the standard is enacted, most mineral producers will have to determine the respirable monitor filter and bulk crystalline silica contents of their ores and products so that workers and/or customers will know whether they are in compliance with the 0.1% HCS and/or the OSHA permissible exposure level (PEL) of 50 µg for an 8-hour workday for respirable crystalline silica as determined from monitor samples. Two major concerns with the RCS are the widespread occurrence of crystalline silica in nature and the suitability of current technology for routinely determining crystalline silica concentrations at the 0.1 % RCS level. Most ores are extracted from silica-bearing deposits and it is a common constituent of rocks and soils. OSHA's RCS will have the greatest impact on the producers of crushed stone, diatomite, dimension stone, gravel, industrial sand, perlite, pumice, pyrophyllite, sand, and talc because these materials frequently are shipped directly from the mill to the customer. MSHA's RCS would affect nearly all mineral producers. Those producers that have crystalline silica present in concentrations near the 0.1 % cutoff point will have the most difficulty with the analysis. Crystalline silica can be quantified at the 0.1 % level by X-ray diffractometry in simple systems containing one, two, and possibly three minerals if (1) none of the accessory minerals has X-ray diffraction reflections that coincide or overlap with those of crystalline silica and (2) the standard has a particle size distribution and crystallinity similar to those of the sample. In some instances, it may not be possible to determine the crystalline silica content of a sample with any degree of certainty using the recommended regulatory protocol. In all cases, it is recommended that a qualified mineralogist identify the minerals in a sample prior to any regulatory analysis. Additionally, the uncertainty as to whether some silica polymorphs should be classified as crystalline or noncrystalline and the suitability of metastable high-temperature standards, such as cristobalite and tridyrnite, for regulatory analysis at ambient temperatures should be addressed further. This overview is written both to highlight these problems and to serve as a guide for analysts, regulators, and industry personnel who are involved in the crystalline silica issue. It also covers some of the difficulties and/or shortcomings in quantifying crystalline silica, such as the ubiquitous mineral quartz, in the workplace.

An effort has been made to give both a comprehensive and simplified picture of the origin, modes of formation, and characteristics of nonmetallic inclusions in steel. Exogenous inclusions, those formed by mechanical entrainment or heterogeneous reaction, have their principal source in ladle refractories. Mechanical emulsion is not considered a likely mechanism. Endogenous inclusions, resulting from homogeneous reactions, are formed mainly during cooling and freezing. They are principally oxides and sulfides but include some nitrides and carbides. Deoxidation affects both the quantity and character of such oxide inclusions and significantly affects the size and shape of sulfides. The importance of inclusions is largely in their effect on mechanical properties. It is fitting and proper that we should honor the memory of those technical giants who have left such a rich heritage to our profession. Today, according to annual custom, we pay tribute to such a man. To have been chosen to play a part in this observance prompts in me an inordinate pride while I am humble before the responsibilities of my task. The ranks are growing thin of those who had the good fortune to come under the personal influence of Professor Howe, but the number who continue to benefit from his legacy of technical wisdom con-stantly increases. I am among the latter. One has only to read his works to appreciate his unusual ability to take data and observations from many sources and give them a clear and comprehensive

Community members’ sources of information about companies’ social investments are often influenced by the messages in a variety of communication channels, such as newspapers, television and social media. In this sea of communication channels, corporate communications may not always have the desired effect in influencing community perceptions. This paper explores the efficacy of communication between mining companies and communities in Chile through content analysis of corporate sustainability reports and newspaper reporting.Chilean media reporting between 2005 and 2013 is examined to identify community perceptions of corporate social investments made by mining companies. Content within the Chilean newspapers El Mercurio (national) and Soy Chile (regional) is contrasted with content from corporate sustainability reports published by The National Copper Corporation of Chile (Codelco) and Barrick Gold Corporation, Canada (Barrick) for the same period. The objective is to identify differences in the way that corporate social investments are reported by companies in sustainable development reporting and by media in newspapers.Overall, the study demonstrates that the media’s framing and reporting of corporate activities was more negative than positive. Moreover, media outlets tended to focus upon the ‘negative impacts’ or ‘damage’ to communities brought about by mining developments. Conversely, companies’ public communications were largely focused upon direct improvements in livelihoods (health, education, etc) of neighbouring communities. This preliminary study provides a baseline for the development of new formats of effective communication with neighbouring communities. The aim of this program was to develop a reliable and meaning-ful basts for assessing certain safety aspects, namely fire and, in particular, toxicity hazards of articles employed in underground coal mining operations. This investigation was centered on the thermal oxidative degradation of "pure" ingredients used specifically in the formulation of conveyor beltings. To achieve this goal all products formed on thermal oxidative degradation of the materials studied were analyzed, identified I and the amount of each individual species present was determined quantitatively on a weight of product per weight of material basis. The weight/weight data thus obtained can then be factorized to reflect the relative toxicity of each individual species present, using for example the Threshold Limit Values adopted by the American Conference of Governmental and Industrial Hygienists, whereby an overall "toxicity index" can be arrived at which makes it possible to compare the different potential formulation components in a quantitative manner insofar as their "toxicity" is concerned. Furthermore, knowing the off-gassing characteristics of the commonly used additives I their contribution to the product mix obtained from actual belting can be postulated. Conversely, from the species obtained on thermal oxidative degradation of conveyor belts the type and to a degree the content of additives can be deduced. Based on the se data meaningful regulations governing the material selection for underground use can be developed. For these studies a quiescent system at 370°C was employed. Thermogravimetric and differential thermal analyses were performed to supplement and extend the sealed system investigations and to provide information regarding thermal oxidative behavior under dynamic conditions.

A descoberta de óleo e gás no Pré-Sal transformou o Brasil em um dos grandes possuidores de reservas de petróleo no mundo e aumentou as expectativas de produção em águas profundas. Apesar da euforia, alguns desafios têm o potencial de inviabilizar a exploração do Pré-Sal: a complexa logística offshore, as dificuldades de acesso ao reservatório, as condições físico-químicas do poço e de subsuperfície. As condições impostas pelo ambiente são relevantes, devido aos altos teores de contaminantes, alta temperatura e pressão, que exigem materiais de alto desempenho. O objetivo deste trabalho é revisar os avanços que podem contribuir para superar as condições físico-químicas do Pré-Sal. Verificou-se que a solução deste problema pode envolver três tipos de abordagem: O desenvolvimento de ligas resistentes à corrosão (LRC), a adição de agentes modificadores do meio corrosivo (inibidores) e modificações no projeto dos equipamentos. Espera-se, portanto, que a utilização conjunta das diferentes abordagens proporcione a viabilidade de longo prazo da produção no Pré-Sal.

"How Wall Street Darling Molycorp Undermined the U.S. Economy, Degraded our National Security and Distorted the Global Economic Balance and How These Falsehoods Continue to be Promoted Even Today INTRODUCTION & SUMMARY In 2007 the Molycorp Mountain Pass rare earth mine was resurrected from its desert-grave in California by its then-owner Chevron Mining. Responding to elevated rare earth prices Chevron began processing on-site rare earth concentrates left over from past mining operations that were terminated in 1998i. Chinese demand had sparked what was being described as a commodities super-cycleii. Commodity prices were on the move. Wall Street smelled opportunity. In 2008 Goldman Sachs, Pegasus Partners, Resource Capital Funds, Traxys North America LLC and Carint Group LLC acquired the mining assets from Chevron. In an environment of ever-declining ethical standards and regulatory consequences the private capital group and their investment bankers would bring Molycorp to market. Molycorp, with its high powered investment banking team of Morgan Stanley and J.P. Morganiii, easily dominated the contest. Molycorp promoted itself, largely based on its past operating history and proven reserves, as the best company to challenge China’s monopoly control over the production of rare earths: a group of elements critical to most advanced technologies and U.S. defense systemsiv. Most of Wall Street’s hottest investment sectors were dependent on these materials: alternative energy, green technologies, computing, personal communications, advanced electronics and defense systems. By late 2010 there were dozens of prospective rare earth start-up ‘mining companies’ seeking capital. Eventually the number of prospective rare earth mining companies seeking capital exceeded 400, despite the reality that supply requirements of this market were disproportionally small when compared to other natural resource sectorsv. In the world of finance ‘smart money’ picks the winners. Consequently just twovi projects attracted nearly all of the capital (Molycorp and Lynas). Wall street picked Molycorpvii. This paper will primarily focus on Molycorp. By early 2010 the words “Molycorp” and “Rare Earths” electrified many people in the mining industry, most non-Chinese manufacturing technology companies, U.S. & allied defense contractors, technocrats in the U.S. national security community and eager investors across most of the world’s stock markets. It was the hottest story of the yearviii. The financial, technology and defense press coverage verged on euphoric: heaping fuel on fuel until the highly combustible Molycorp-pyre cast a long shadow over all of its rivalsix. When the IPO match was lit the spectacular flaming pyre sucked all of the oxygen out of the rare earth spacex. Molycorp was ranked the most lucrative IPO of 2010, resulting in record breaking profits to its private investors and massive returns for its early stock holding investors."

Molten slag from pyrometallurgical furnaces is tapped at high temperature, carrying a large amount of thermal energy. But the common slag dumping and water granulation methods used for slag treatment do not permit energy recovery. Furthermore, water is present in these processes and while operations are designed to minimize risks of steam explosions, from the contact of slag with water, these common slag handling practices have never been inherently safe. Common handling practices do permit some slags to be sold, but often in low volumes at low prices. Dry granulation offers advantages over these common slag handling practices, including the production of by-products, the recovery of thermal energy, and the eliminated consumption and safety hazards of water. For these reasons, there have been various studies in dry granulation and heat recovery, but most have never been brought to commercial scale due to scalability and cost challenges. Ecomaister- Hatch has developed and brought to commercial scale a reliable and simple dry granulation and heat recovery technology. Here we review common slag handling practices, the developments in dry slag granulation over the last three decades, introduce the Ecomaister-Hatch dry slag granulation process, and elaborate on future applications of the technology in the processing of argon oxygen decarburization and blast furnace slags.
