A new style of tectonic map based on age of folding has been prepared for the Canadian Appalachian region as part of the Tectonic Map of Canada Project. This style of map pro-vides a clearer picture of the tectonic history of the region than any meth-od hitherto attempted. Precambrian blocks that were relatively unaffected by Palaeozoic de-formation are distinguished on the Great Northern Peninsula and in the Conception Bay region of Newfound-land. K/ A age determinations suggest that these blocks were intruded and metamorphosed during Grenville orogeny. Other Grenville-like rocks, on Cape Breton Island and in New Brunswick, were more actively involved in subsequent Palaeozoic orogeny. THE discovery well of the world's -deepest oil producing structure, University 1-B of Group No. One Oil Corporation, in the Big Lake oil field, Reagan County, Texas, has had a remarkable record. The well is outstanding for the following reasons: (1) It is the world's pioneer well to produce. oil in commercial quantities from a structure 8500 ft. below the earth's . surface; (2) this well was the only. producer from the 8500-ft. pay for a period of 17 months and 24 days; (3) the flow of the discovery well has been free from-the customary changes at the casinghead, with the exception of putting on a back-pressure of 185 lb.; and, (4) the well's daily production of oil and gas increased rather steadily for 17 months and 18 days from an initial of 40 bbl. per day to a maximum of 2926 bbl. per day, and then six months later, after a period of decline and self-readjustment to subsurface changes caused by six more deep producers, the well set its real record for one day's production of oil at 2950 bbl

High strength-light weight materials are very attractive for the transportation sector, particularly to the aerospace industry. High strength-age hardenable aluminium alloys are widely used in airframes due to their unique combination of strength, density, toughness, corrosion resistance, cost and easy processing. However, the hardening capacity of such alloys is somehow saturated due to thermodynamic issues related to the conventional processing. The production of aluminum-matrix composites is a promising strategy to overcome this limitation, resulting in strength levels that cannot be reached by actual commercial aluminum alloys. In the present work, multiwall carbon nanotubes were used to reinforce the AA6061 aluminium alloy. 1 and 2% weight percent of MWCNT were mixed to the alloy powder by high-energy ball-milling process. The blended powder was consolidated by hot extrusion. The obtained composite bars were submitted to heat treatment for the T6 condition in order to combine both CNT dispersion and precipitation hardening effects. Optical and scanning electron microscopy, as well as hardeness testing, was used to characterize the bars. Typical wrought microstructure, free of defects, was observed on the extruded bars. Hardness of the composites was observed to increase by 20, 28 and 68% for 1% MWCNT 6 h milling, 2% MWCNT 6 h milling and 2% MWCNT 10 h milling, respectively, in the as-extruded condition. The better performance for the composites blended at higher milling time was attributed to a better nanotubes dispersion. Subsequent heat treatment to the T6 condition did not result in additional hardening.

"With a total value to date of well over $200,000,000.00 for its ore production, the Tintic mining district, which is about 100 miles southwest of Salt Lake City, ranks as one of the three main ore producing areas of Utah. In it are located the biggest silver mines of the country, silver having been the chief metal produced in the camp since its start. Tintic's silver production to date has a total value of over $ 100,000,000, approximately half of the value of the camp's ore production, the balance being roughly divided among lead, gold and copper.Discovery of the camp was made in the late sixties. Lack of transportation and ore reduction facilities delayed extensive development of the area for nearly a decade.In recent years Tintic's ore production has ranged from 350,000 to 400,000 tons annually. In 1 924 the camp produced one-eighth of the silver produced in the nation with an output of 7,729,700 ounces. Its lead production was 77,765,000 pounds and its gold production 26,285 ounces.The known mineralized area of the district is found in a broad syncline striking north and south. The west limb plunges sharply and extends for a distance on its dip of approximately one and a half miles to the trough. The east limb raises gently through a distance of about two miles to the east limit of known mineralization. This general structure is broken by local faulting throughout the district, the local structural conditions playing an important part in the ore deposition. The north end of the fold is obscured by a rhyolite flow and the south end stops against a monzonite stock."

Lignite constitutes approximately 97 percent of the near-surface coal resources in Texas. The most significant bituminous resources are in the north-central and southern parts of the state. Coal reserves in Texas are estimated to be 13.7 billion tons, about three percent of U.S. coal reserves. The average thickness of coal seams mined in Texas is approximately eight feet. Texas gained primacy when its regulatory program was conditionally approved February 16, 1980; the program was fully approved June 18,1980. The state's Abandoned Mine Lands program was approved June 23,1980.

Electrophoretic mobility measurements of coal and pyrite particles in distilled water revealed a difference between the migration speeds of the two materials toward the anode in a dc electric field. This information led to the development of a laboratory electrophoresis column for separating fine pyrite from coal by utilizing the electrokinetic and the specific gravity differences between coal and pyrite. The study demonstrated on a laboratory scale that pyrite and other impurities can be separated from fine coal by electrophoresis using a stage separation technique. In a cost analysis, electrical power for electrophoresis was extrapolated to about $1 per ton of clean coal product. But, since the only successful tests ever made were in the laboratory with prewashed samples of minus 100-plus 325-mesh coal in distilled water, the cost figure derived is not representative of conditions prevalent in commercial coal cleaning operations. True conditions would reflect costs many times as great. In the course of the work, several scale-up techniques were considered but their feasibility became academic in view of the physical and economic problems associated with electrophoretic separation of pyrite from coal. Although the process and apparatus were finally deemed impractical for commercial coal preparation, the electrophoresis column may have some application as a laboratory device.

Impurity minerals in fluorspar ores and concentrates from a deposit in Southern Africa have been studied by reflected light, transmitted light, and cathodoluminescence microscopy. The principal impurities are quartz, calcite, aegirine, apatite, ankerite, magnetite, goethite, and synchysite [Ca(La,Ce,Nd)(C03l2Fj. Cathodoluminescence microscopy was found to be very useful in studying the character of the fluorite and especially for recognizing the presence of apatite and calcite impurities. Fluorite exhibits blue, calcite shows yellow, and apatite has white, light purple, and pink cathodoluminescence. The cathodoluminescent character of apatite varies with its geological environment and position in the orebody. The results of this microscopic study show that phosphorus present in flUorite concentrates occurs principally in binary locked apatite-fluorite particles. Successive fluorite cleaner concentrates contain progressively smaller amounts of locked apatite-fluorite particles. Free apatite has been effectively partitioned to the final tailings.

High-extraction mining of coal and other stratified minerals has a predictable effect on the surface and subsurface. Impacts on ground waters in overlying strata and on surface waters, that are associated with overlying sequential zones of collapse, fracturing, aquiclude, constrained strata, and surface disturbances can be anticipated. Since first quantified around 1979 in Bureau of Mines sponsored contract research work and others (and often adopted by state regulators), with zone extents based upon multiples of mined seam height of 24 to over 60 for the fractured zone, much new data have become available. In examining the sources of data and the methods and intents of the researchers of over 65 case histories, it became apparent that the strata behaviors were being confused with overlapping vertical extents reported for the fractured zones and aquiclude zones depending on whether the researcher was interested in water intrusion into the mine or in water loss from surface or ground waters. These more recent data, and critical examination of existing data, have led to the realization that the former "Aquiclude Zone" defined for its ability to prevent or minimize the intrusion of ground or surface waters into mines has another important character in increasing storage of surface and shallow ground waters in response to mining with no permanent loss of waters. This zone is here named the "Dilated Zone." The existence of the dilated zone explains the ratios of up to 60 times the mined thickness. Surface and ground waters can drain into this zone, but seldom into the mine, and can eventually be recovered through closing of dilations by mine subsidence progression away from the area, or filling of the additional void space created, or both. A revised model has been developed which accommodates the available data, by modifying the zones as follows: ? collapse and disaggregation extending 6 to 10 times the mined thickness above the panel ? continuous fracturing extending approximately 24 times the mined thickness above the panel, allowing temporary drainage of intersected surface and ground waters ? development of a zone of dilated, increased storativity, and leaky strata with little enhanced vertical permeability from 24 to 60 times the mined thickness above the panel above the continuous fracturing zone, and below the constrained or surface effects zones, whose thickness or existence is dictated by the zones above and below ? maintenance of a constrained but leaky zone above the dilated zone and below the surface effects zone, whose thickness or existence is dictated by the zones above and below ? limited surface fracturing in areas of extension extending up to 50 ft or so beneath the ground surface

"The search for technological innovations in the Civil Construction takes as an objective the reduction of costs and increase of the productivity. However, these technologies demand analysis and studies of parameters of control that provide the quality of the products. With the intention of improve the knowledge on industrialized mortars used in mechanized projection machines, a characterization was done in the state anidro, fresh and hardening of three mortars, being each one of a State, Rio de Janeiro, Sao Paulo and Bahia. The tenors of water/ mortar was obtained through tests done in built environment, it varied from 0,17 to 0,26. From these results, the mortars were projected by his respective consistency, analyzing its compressive strength, and traction adherence resistance, in this way, the good performance of the revetments was provided.IntroductionThe market competitiveness of Construction has led companies to invest in construction processes and techniques in order to rationalize and optimize the buildings. A presença de inclusões não metálicas em aços inoxidáveis é uma das possíveis fontes de defeitos superficiais, especialmente em produtos laminados a frio. Uma das alternativas para evitar as inclusões de óxido de alumínio em aços inoxidáveis é o rígido controle dos níveis de alumínio presentes nas matérias primas adicionadas ao aço. O presente trabalho tem como objetivo apresentar melhorias de qualidade superficial obtidas no aço ferrítico 430 estabilizado ao nióbio (0,20%Nb a 0,40%Nb) produzido pela Aperam através do uso de ferro-nióbio contendo menores teores de alumínio em relação ao produto padrão, desenvolvido especialmente para essa aplicação pela empresa fornecedora do material. Através de resultados industriais constatou-se uma evolução da qualidade com a redução no índice de desvios por esfoliação de 29%, enfatizando não só a importância do controle do teor de alumínio incorporado aos aços inoxidáveis como também um controle rigoroso de processo especialmente em aplicações de alto apelo estético, caso do uso em equipamentos da linha branca.

MOST OF THE key items in the bituminous-coal and Lignite industry declined in 1954 compared with 1953. Production, consumption, exports, average value per ton, men working, and days worked all declined; however, in the field of mechanization, the percentages mechanically loaded, mechanically cleaned, mined by auger, and mined by stripping all increased, as did production per men per day. Production.-The output of soft coal in 1954-391.7 million tons- was 14 percent less than the 457.3 million tons produced in 1953. The lower production in 1954 was due largely to a sharp reduction in consumption in the United States and to a drop in exports.

The behavior of molybdenum and its surface oxides in oxidizing and reducing gas atmospheres and in high vacua at elevated temperatures is a question of scientific and technical importance. The use of molybdenum as a metal or as an important component in alloys in oxidizing atmospheres at elevated temperatures has been limited because of the unprotec-tive nature of its oxide film and the volatility of this oxide at moderate temperatures. This communication will present results of a vacuum microbalance studyl, 2 of the following problems: (I) the oxidation kinetics in the temperature range of 250°to 450°C; (2) the reduction with pure hydrogen of thin oxide films formed on molybdenum; (3) the volatility of the thin oxide films; and (4) the vacuum oxidation of molybdenum at high temperatures. Molybdenum is an interesting metal to study for the following reasons: (I) although the oxide-to-metal-volume ratio is greater than one, the metal is not considered protective; (2) the metal oxidizes readily at temperatures of 2 50°C and higher; (3) the oxides of the metal are reduced at temperatures as low as 500°C by pure hydrogen; (4) the oxide Moo3 melts at 795°C; and (5) the oxides of molybdenum are volatile at moderate temperatures. The following variables are studied in the oxidation kinetics: time, temperature, pressure, surface preparation, surface area, concentration of inert gas in the lattice, cycling procedures in temperature, vacuum effect and high temperature vacuum oxidation. The general interpretation of many of these factors has been previously discussed. Literature The oxidation of molybdenum has not been studied critically. Although many studies have probably been made on the kinetics of the oxidation process, none has been reported in the literature available to us. The crystal structures found in the oxidation of molybdenum have been studied by Hickman and Gulbransen." Their results showed that Moo2 is the oxide which is stable in contact with the metallic substrate throughout the temperature range 300 to 700°C. As the film thickens in the low temperature range, MoO3 becomes predominant on the surface. Above 400°C, Moos is no longer observed, MoO2 being the only oxide found. Hagg and Magneli6 have shown from an X ray study that the a-phase, orthor-hombic Moo3 is stable up to 1050°C. Two other phases, ß and ß with compositions close to MoO2.90 are also obtained. The formula for the 0 phase is not given but that of the ß phase is defined as Mo9O26 The 0' phase is found to be built upon a monoclinic unit cell. Preparation of briquettes by adding CaF2 reagent into the Australian iron ore powder. The structure and morphology of iron ore briquettes during various reduction stages (i.e., Fe2O3→Fe3O4, Fe3O4→FeO, and FeO→Fe) were observed via an ore microscope and scanning electron microscopy. The results showed that CaF2 reacted with SiO2 to form CaO and SiF4 gas during the roasting process. The reduction swelling index decreased from 12.36 to 8.83% when the CaF2 content in the briquettes increased due to CaF2-mediated refinement of the hematite grains during the first stage of the reduction process. Lattice distortion resulting from the presence of Ca2+ in the FeO lattice during the second stage of the reduction process, coupled with an increase in the porosity of the iron ore briquettes and the formation of a low-melting-point slag phase, promoted the anisotropic growth of FeO lamellar crystals, which resulted in an increase in the reduction swelling index from 4.27 to 7.36%. During the third stage of the reduction process, the growth of iron whiskers was promoted by wüstite (FeO) lattice distortion caused by a solid solution of Ca2+ in the FeO lattice; the reduction swelling index increased from 15.61 to 24.72%, resulting in the catastrophic swelling of the iron ore briquettes.

O Centro de Operações do Sistema Elétrico da Aperam South América possui um sistema de automação chamado SAE (Sistema de Automação de Energia) para realizar a distribuição e operacionalização da Energia Elétrica na planta em Timóteo, sistema este com mais de 20 anos de implantação. Devido ao alto grau de obsolescência do sistema SAE, a dificuldade de se atualizar todos os componentes do sistema e a complexidade e dificuldade do acesso aos dados, verificou-se a necessidade de encontrar uma forma de disponibilizar os mesmos para os demais sistemas da empresa. Com base nestas necessidades, foi desenvolvido e implantado um GATEWAY capaz de realizar a comunicação com todas UTR’s CORTEX (remotas do sistema), através do protocolo CONITEL 2020, disponibilizando estas informações coletadas em uma camada OPC SERVER para que o sistema PIMS (Sistema de Gerenciamento de Informação da Planta) realize a coleta e armazenamento destas informações, permitindo assim um melhor gerenciamento de energia pelo VIRIDIS (Sistema de Gestão da Eficiência Energética utilizado na APERAM), além de permitir que toda a planta tenha acesso em tempo real às informações de tensão e corrente de todo setor de 13,8 kV, 69 kV e 230 kV.

En ese sentido, el objetivo del texto radica en hacer conocer la potencialidad de los yacimientos, cantidad, calidad de recursos y reservas de los mismos.
