The Pechelbronn (Alsace) field is the only important French producing field. During 1934, development was carried on as in previous years. The total output of this field reached 553,575 bbl. in 1934, showing a slight decrease from the 1933 figures. Of the total, 315,000 bbl. (56 per cent) was extracted by drilling, while 238,875 bbl. (46 per cent) was obtained by means of shafts and galleries. Exploration of deep Jurassic and Triassic horizons was still in progress at the end of 1934. A deep well reached the Upper Triassic at a depth of 34 m. (2736 ft.). (Information kindly supplied by M. S. Mena, Directeur Technique.) As mentioned before, the small Gabian field (Herault) is gradually being exhausted. No drilling operations were undertaken in 1934, the small production being restricted to the pumping of old wells. Two exploration wells, noted as "drilling" at the end of 1933, were completed in 1934; viz., Lavelanet (Ariége) at 3785 ft. and Santenay (Niévre) at 2578 feet. French Possessions Algeria.—No drilling at Tliouanet. Out of a total of 100 wells drilled in the area, only 8 are still producing. No exploration work is reported during 1934 in Algeria. Tunisia.—Two wells completed; one well drilling at the end of 1934. A total of 11 wells is reported to have been drilled before the beginning of 1935; out of these, 8 were completed before the present program was begun. Morocco.—Exploration work progressed actively last year. The outstanding event was the coming in of Ts. 26 well at 1243 ft. This well took fire, therefore great difficulties were encountered in the accurate measurement of initial production; the figure of 1500 bbl. of oil given here is a near estimate. Oil flowed accompanied by a great amount of water. The apparent decrease of drilling operations in 1934 is explained by the increase in field activities after the results of Ts. 26 were known;

"Sub-standard practices and their adverse impact on safety performance remain a challenge in the South African gold mining industry. The purpose of this study was to investigate the root causes of sub-standard practices and the effect on safety performance in South African gold mines. The focus of the study was on the underground production operations at a gold mine in the Free State. The study consisted of three parts: a personal investigation into the causes of sub-standard practices at the mine, a comparison with the results of a cultural study performed at the West Wits mines, and a behavioural survey.The studies described in this article yielded similar results in terms of the key drivers behind sub-standard practices. It was found that substandard practices had a number of causes, and the origin lies within the habits, attitude, and behaviour of employees. Current methods of addressing sub-standard practices and improving safety performance were found to discourage employees from performing work safely and according to procedure. It was concluded that the lack of critical behavioural habits for the given work environment and job title could possibly be the primary reason for the occurrence of sub-standard practices. IntroductionSince the implementation of the Mine Health and Safety Act, 1996 (Act 29 of 1996) and the Mine Health and Safety Regulations, the South African mining industry has been striving to improve health and safety performance and has placed great emphasis on adherence to mine standards.The Act requires employers in the mining industry to report accidents, incidents, and dangerous situations to the Regional Principal Inspector of Mines in their area. The data provided by employers is captured and analysed by the South African Mines Reportable Accident Statistical System (SAMRASS) and made available for public viewing (Department of Mineral Resources, 2011).A review of the national mine-related accident statistics shows clearly that the South African gold mining industry has improved its safety performance markedly over the past decade, but is still facing major challenges (Figure 1). These include meeting the Mine Health and Safety Milestones (Department of Mineral Resources, 2011)."

"The most important factor in Canadian mining is not the operating cost of current projects but the availability of capital for future projects. The future of mining at depth will be producing ore from the top of the orebody working downward with very effective, tightly controlled mining methods, i.e. either selective mining or bulk mining with well controlled dilution and fragmentation. The key characteristics of future mines will be smaller access excavations, more effective ground support, very precise blasting techniques and more efficient and reliable materials handling systems. Equipment will be smaller and designed for high efficiency and low maintenance, reducing both the capital and operating cost. This means there will be fewer scoops, more continuous mucking machines and conveyor belts, both lateral and vertical.Orepass failures have become accepted and the resultant redevelopment and retramming has become common. The capital investment in so-called permanent ore passes and crusher stations becomes questionable, particularly when crushers are only necessary for less than 10% of the ore going through the system. The best way to solve the chronic instability of ore passes is, as with all of the stability problems at depth, by reducing the excavation size rather than increasing ground support. Smaller access drifts would reduce the capital cost and increase the rate of development as well as reduce the amount of waste to be handled, reducing the ground support and the ventilation requirements. Large drifts and ore passes are essential only for the equipment needed to handle large pieces of ore and the productivity of scoops is very expensive when the requirements for ventilation and large access drifts are taken into account. The key issue is the fragmentation generated by primary blasting.The future of mining in Canada will depend on simple and robust technology geared to the environment in which it will have to operate. Its survival will depend on some-thing much more fundamental and difficult to accomplish than a technological advance — it will require a dramatic change in the way the mining process is managed, how work is organized, how effort is rewarded and how costs are measured — a complete change in mind-set."

Copper, as far as we know, was the first metal used by man, and due to the fact that it occurs in many places in the 'native' state, and also to the ease with which it may be shaped, it has played an important part in the evolution of civilization. Copper tools with inscriptions dating back to 6,000 B.C. are known in Egypt, where the metal probably got its start as a useful material in human hands. Just how far back the use of copper in Canada dates is difficult to say, but it was in use by the Indians in the Lake Superior country long before the arrival of the first white man. For many generations the Eskimos also have used copper derived fr0m deposits of the native metal found in the Coronation Gulf district. Due to the metal's many unique qualities, imperishable with age, ancient implements and utensils are apparently as good today as when they were made, having withstood the onslaught of time probably better than objects of any of the other base metals. Copper alloys so well with other metals that today it is second only to iron in its industrial value. Even at the beginning of the eighteenth century the world's production of copper was probably not more than seven thousand tons a year, with Great Britain producing three-fourths of this. One hundred years ago the mines of the United States, Chili, Mexico, Canada, South Africa, Australia, and Tasmania, which now produce about nine-tenths of the copper of the world, were totally undeveloped. Ln 1926 the world production of copper was approximately 1,658,000 tons, which was seventy thousand tons greater than in the preceding year; but growing demand absorbed the increased production, so that the stock of rough copper throughout the world is comparatively small. Of this huge tonnage of the metal, Canada produced four percent, two-thirds of it emanating from British Columbia, nearly one-third from the Province of Ontario, and the balance from Quebec.

Due to increasing complexities of raw materials for base metals production the conventional pyrometallurgical processes are challenged. To make the appropriate modifications, thorough evaluations of the thermal stabilities of phases and phase assemblages which are commonly encountered in these processes are essential. In this work, phase relations and thermal stabilities of equilibrium phases in the Cu-Ni-S system have been reviewed. The calculated phase diagram of Cu-Ni system has been validated. At T < 630 K, in the Ni-rich corner, large scatter in data has been observed and discussed in detail. The other binary systems, Cu-S and Ni-S, have been also critically reviewed together with the ternary Cu-Ni-S system. The reviews were focused on compiling and discussing phase relations and thermal stabilities of the selected systems in the pyrometallurgical processes of Cu and Ni productions.

"The name bentonite has been applied to a group or series of clay-like materials characterized by an alkaline oxide and alkaline earth content of 5 to 10 per cent, fine grain Giza, high absorptive powers, and usually very strong colloidal properties.Bentonite probably represents no mineral of fixed composition, and its physical properties vary considerably. The type material from Wyoming is light yellow or greenish yellow in color, but from other localities it may be cream colored, white, gray, pink, dark brown or even black. It is exceedingly fine grained, very plastic and highly absorbent. The appearance may be dull or powdeay, but a freshly cut surface usually has a waxy luster. Some varieties have the appearance of wax and may be cut into very thin, translucent shavings. The fracture of the type material is roughly conchoidal, that of other varieties is platey and shale-like, while still others have no typical fracture. Bentonite is highly absorbent; .hen wetted it will absorb more than three times its weight or seven times its volume of water. Some varieties when wetted with water expand to more than six times (some experimenters report eight times) their original volume. The wetted material is exceedingly smooth and soft and feels like soft soap. Unlike most clays, bentonite is easily fusible at a comparatively low temperature.Under a high-power microscope bentonite seems to consist of extremely small, more or less rounded, grains of uniform size, but the texture of most varieties is so fine that individual grains can not be distinguished.Some varieties when finely ground and thoroughly agitated with water will stay in suspension indefinitely, forming a translucent gelatinous mass. The addition of small amounts of acids or sodium chloride seems to have little or no tendency to raid coagulation or settling. Other varieties of similar analysis and appearance go into suspension more easily, but settle out again in a comparatively short time. It has been suggested that the material which stays in suspension indefinitely is a true colloid of the emulsion or lyophilic type."

The percentage depletion deduction on Federal Income Tax Returns under the provisions of the 1939 Internal Revenue Code and of Sections 611 to Section 615, inclusive, of the revenue act of 1954, have created innumerable administrative difficulties, and a new interpretation of "gross income from the property" in that the Courts have expanded the ideas of what constitutes "gross income from the property" to a degree unheard of and unthought of prior to the enactment of these two codes. Originally, under the Revenue Acts of 1917, 1918, and 1920 depletion was allowable, based upon mine valuations as of March 1, 1913; if the mine was owned prior to March 1, 1913; upon cost, as of the date of acquisition if purchased subsequent to March 1, 1913; and upon a "discovery" basis if the mine was discovered after March 1, 1913, The "jab" for mine valuations as of March 1, 1913 and for discovery valuations and depletion was not as bad as it has been made out to be. Thousands of valuations and estimates of reserves were made and agreed upon between taxpayers and Internal Revenue Service engineers and as the years went on the answers have been found to be "reasonable." However, human nature being what it is each case was a battle of wits - of a sort - and many resulted in severe differences of opinion and litigation. As tax rates increased the situation was not bettered. I could talk for several hours on this phase of depletion but it is all past now andwould not give any real service or better understanding of the matter.

In Sarcheshmeh Copper Complex, a molybdenite floatation concentrate was produced by selective removal of copper impurities with 7 stages of cleaner floatation banks, that contains around 1% copper and 54.5% molybdenum. Mineralogical studies, physical and chemical characterizations showed that the sample contained 91% molybdenite (MoS2), 2.6% chalcopyrite (CuFeS2), 0.2%Covellite (CuS), 1.6% pyrite (FeS2) and 4.6% other nonmetallic impurities. In the present study, the removal of the copper sulfide was investigated by ferric chloride leaching for achieving a molybdenite concentrate with copper content less than 0.3%. Therefore, the application of response surface methodology (RSM) for modeling and optimization of the influence of three control parameters including ferric chloride (FeCl3) dosage, reaction temperature and reaction time, each varying in five levels, were considered, and the mathematical model for prediction of %Cu removal from molybdenite concentrate was derived. This study showed that RSM could effectively be applied for the modeling of ferric chloride leaching, and finding an economical optimum condition to achieve maximum de-coppering efficiency while consuming minimum leaching reagents. The optimum dissolution conditions to maximize Cu extraction were 200 kg/t for ferric chloride dosage, 120 min for reaction time and 80 °C for reaction temperature with a prediction of 83.20% Cu dissolution. THE investigation described in this paper deals with the development of high-temperature alloys of the Konel series over a considerable period of time at the Research Laboratories of the Westinghouse Electric and Manufacturing Co. The word "Konel" has been coined to designate a class of alloys which are essentially nickel-cobalt-iron with other elements added, usually in small quantities. Most of these alloys contain titanium, usually about 2.5 percent. The main consideration related to strength at high temperatures but the thermionic characteristics of the alloys was also of considerable importance. It is, however, with the mechanical properties at elevated temperatures that we are herein concerned. Much attention has also been devoted to their age-hardening characteristics. There is little need to stress the utilitarian aspect of this subject, as it has been discussed frequently. Alloys exhibiting superior properties at normal or elevated temperatures rapidly find many suitable applications. There may be some question, however, as to what constitutes a "superior alloy, " or an alloy that may have good service possibilities at high temperatures. The problem is complex and various means have been employed to predict the useful life that may be expected of a material. In recent years the "creep limit" has been used as the best means of evaluation. Such tests necessarily are prolonged and hence collection of data is very slow. In a general survey of many alloys therefore the creep test is not desirable and recourse must be had to much shorter time tests in order more rapidly to select alloys which appear to show promise. For this reason the present survey has been made using the high-temperature tensile test and a bend&apos; test developed by Howard Scott.1 In the tensile test the conditions have been standardized for all tests, so that values obtained are at least comparable, one alloy with another, although the absolute values recorded merely indicate the mechanical properties at the given temperature under a definite rate of loading.

The studies previously made on Smelting in the Lead Blast Furnace have dealt with the custom smelter of the International Smelting Co. at Tooele, Utah, and on the smelter of the Bunker Hill & Sullivan Mining & Smelting Co. at Kellogg, Idaho. The International plant may be considered representative of the traditional custom smelter. The lead smelter of the future seemingly will have to treat increasingly richer lead charges. This feature was then stressed in describing the Bunker Hill plant.

SEVERAL years ago, I estimated the total stock of gold in the world to be about a thousand million ounces, of which rather over one-third was available for monetary uses. Robert H. Ridgway has estimated the world&apos;s production from 1493 to 1927 as slightly over this amount. Of this total, 1.5 per cent was produced between 1493 and 1850 (before the Californian and Australian goldfields began to flood the world with gold), 331/2 per cent from 1851 to 1900, and 511/2 per cent from 1900 to 1927. Allowing for loss by attrition and permanent consumption in the arts, and for loss of buried treas¬ure, my first-mentioned estimate is perhaps not far from the truth; but my estimate of the monetary stock was certainly too low. Of the total production stated by Rid-way. 28 per cent came from North America. 26.9 per cent from Africa, 1.6.8 per cent from Australasia, 12.4 per cent from South America, and 11.2 per cent from Asia. Excepting that from the African conglomerate beds, the ultimate origin of which is still the subject of controversy, by far the greater part of the total production was derived from alluvials. Weighing all contingencies, it is improbable that any such production as has been made during the last forty years will be repeated in any similar period, if the present price level is maintained. The gold standard today seems firmly established except for temporary digressions. Nevertheless, no well-informed mining engineer will venture to assert the probability that the material for its maintenance throughout future generations can be furnished.

Commencing with early experiences in iron ore beneficiation made at Beeshoek Mine, the paper follows through the process of extensive mineralogical and metallurgical investigations carried out during feasibility study. The paper will discuss the design process and logic followed over the last years, the challenges and decisions the design team faced in order to draw the conclusions that ultimately resulted in today’s value add approach at Assmang’s Khumani Operations.As integral part of the benefi ciation concept, a focus is set on the jigs, explaining the plant concepts, planned expansions and their contribution to the overall value add approach at the mine.The case study is intended to describe the outcomes of the design versus the actual achieved and the further value add projects to be implemented. As for future prospect, the incorporation of Wet High Intensity Magnetic Separation (WHIMS) demonstrates Assmang Khumani’s pursuit to maximise productivity and overall recovery.DMS was evaluated as an alternative to jigging within a comparative test work study, but in conclusion the option had to be excluded due to its inability to achieve the high density cut point required to achieve the sales specifi cations. In contrast, the investigation on producing an additional middlings fraction on the lumpy ore jigs prove to be an adequate option for further improvements of overall mass yield. With further liberation, a saleable product will be achieved by secondary beneficiation on Fines Jigs and WHIMS.Concluding, jigs are considered the most viable and cost effective benefi ciation process for off-grade ore +0.8 - 32 mm at Beeshoek as well as at Khumani, while WHIMS is the process under consideration for super fines recovery.

The barite industry has made notable progress since the days when barite was used only as an adulterant in white-lead paints and the only method of mining it was with pick and shovel. The following chronological record may serve to show how this heavy white mineral has grown in importance in the national exonomy and at the same time to indicate development of methods for obtaining it. 1845. - Barite first, mined in Fauquier County, Va., for use as an adulterant in white-lead paints. 1850 (approx.). - French settlers 60 miles southwest of St Louis, Mo., discovered barite; called it "&apos;tiff;&apos; meaning white. It was mined and shipped to St. Louis for use in paint.

Introduction Zircon is a natural occurring mineral and may exhibit natural low level radioactivity. It contains trace levels (90 to120 pCi/g and 110 to 115 pCi/g respectively or 3.3 to 4.4Bq/g and 4.1 to 4.3 Bq/g) of naturally occurring radioactive uranium and thorium. This mineral is often found in a suiteof minerals (rutile, ilmenite and monazite) Due to the overlap in physical properties of monazite (containing 4–7% thorium) with some of the zircon (slight magnetic susceptibility) it often contaminates the zircon, adding to the levels of thorium in the product. Hazards associated with the products from zircon and its processing is inhalation of respirable dust (generated by milling) containing radioactive uranium and thorium which may cause cancer of the lungs. Legislature regulates the transport, use, workplace environment exposure and storage of radioactive material. In America the general regulation for the unlicensed use of low levels of radioactive materials limits the concentration to 500 ppm (U plus Th). Europe (IAEA) specifies a limit of10 Bg/g (Bequerels per gram) on the parents for transport only which is a higher level of U+Th. Companies selling into these markets need to comply with these regulations and certification is therefore required, not only of the major constituents determining the price, but of the U and Th levels as well. Exceeding the limits for U and Th may result in material being returned to the country of origin. However, for the analyst the requirement is to analyse for these elements throughout the production process as well as the analysis of the ‘tails’ that is returned to the mine area. This requires a wide range of concentration to be analysed. Methods of analysis A wide variety of methods exist for the analysis of U and Th in a range of matrices. (Table I) All these methods have been used with varying degrees of success in terms of accuracy. Overall precision for the different techniques varies from 5 to 25% relative. Time to produce results from these methods vary from a few minutes to several days. The Production Chemist is expected to produce between5 and 10 analyses per hour for process control purposes. A suitable technique that fits this requirement is X-Ray Fluorescence. Both Wavelength Dispersive (WDXRF) and Energy Dispersive X-Ray (EDX) instruments are suitable. X-Ray analysis in general has a few major advantages over competitive techniques. •It is fairly simple to set up and interferences are known and easy to correct •It has multi-element analysis capabilities •Clean spectral lines for U and Th (in zircon specifically) •Uncomplicated and easy to measure background •Low detection limits (3 to 5 ppm) •A very high degree of precision •Sample preparation is uncomplicated and fast (pressed powders and fused beads). In Zircon (ZrSiO4) processed sands the matrix is constant(>99% ZrSiO4) and the background is thus essentially constant. Standards As with any other comparative technique XRF analysis relies heavily on the quality of the standards used. Assuming proper set-up and operation of the instrumentation as well as consistent sample preparation, accuracy is determined by the quality of the initial calibration standards. This report describes the washability characteristics of 18 coal samples taken from 11 drill hole cores from the San Juan Basin area of New Mexico and Colorado. The ash content of these coals could generally be substantially reduced by removing the heavy impurities. The coals were characteristically low in sulfur content; only one sample contained more than 1 percent sulfur after removing the sink-I.50 specific gravity material. The coals ranged in rank from subbituminous C to high volatile C; 11 of the samples were subbituminous A. Many of these core samples came from areas where very little fieldwork has been done; consequently, an outgrowth of this work has been an increase in known coal reserves of the San Juan Basin area.

"This paper suggests that with the settlement of long-term contracts of fifteen years' duration, with prospects of extension, the coal mining industry has, for the first time, a complete commercial justification for large-scale planning.The labour costs of coal production over past years are analyzed and, with the acceptance of the premise that the basic shift rates are certain to rise in the years to come, the paper suggests that forward planning should provide &r capital investment to make a traditionally labour-dense industry into a capital-dense industry.Automated methods of manpower deployment and timekeeping and the monitoring of all equipment back to a central control point are discussed as ail-important means of obtaining maximum utilization of high-cost capital investment.Principles of payment of the work-force, and the utilization of equipment 24 hours a day, seven days a week and the maximum number of days a year, are dealt with as means of achieving maximum capital utilization. Some of the new technical underground and coal preparation problems which will undoubtedly result from the concentration of workings and maximum machine utilization are discussed, and the author makes suggestions as to how these might be solved.In short, the author predicts that if the coal mining industry is prepared to recognize the problems and invest in modern equipment backed by highly trained staff. then the outcome will justify the high capital investment involved. He stresses the importance of human communications in achieving this end."

A computer program for calculating capital and operating costs from material and energy requirements and equipment costs for use in preparing cost estimates for metallurgical process evaluations has been written by the Bureau of Mines&apos; College Park process evaluation group. The program permits rapid recalculation of processing costs when changes of data or equipment are desired, and produces tables of capital and operating costs suitable for publication. Equipment cost summary tables for each process section end supplemental information for input-data checking is included in the computer printout. The program is written in Fortran IV except for several subroutines which are written in machine assembly language for the IBM 7094.3 With a few modifications, the program can be used on other computers.

Large-scale shear apparatus is designed to investigate the shear hehaviour of simulated soft rock joints under constant normal stifmess condition. Regular saw-teeth profiles having inclinations between 9.5" and 26.5" have been tested. The strength envelope based on these test results indicates that predictions made by Panon (1966) are accurate for the lower asperity angles. However, for higher asperity angles, Patton&apos;s model overestimates the shear strength especially in the low to medium normal stress range. In contrast, while Barton&apos;s model (1973) is realistic for Constant Normal Load (CNL) condition, it seems to be inappropriate for modelling the shear behaviour of soft joints under Constant Normal Stiffness (CNS) condition. An empirical strength envelope for the prediction of peak shear strength of joints is proposed in this study to account for the change in normal stress and surface degradation during CNS shearing.

Mine drainage and mine reclamation are topics of major interest to the mining industry, federal and local governments, and the general public. This publication and its companion three volumes are the proceedings of a conference held in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, April 24-29, 1994. There were twelve sessions (69 papers) that dealt with mine drainage, including modeling, geochemistry, prediction, treatment, control strategies, characterization, hydrology, and case studies. These sessions comprise volumes 1 and 2. The six sessions (34 papers) that dealt with reclamation and revegetation of disturbed lands are included in volume 3. Volume 4 includes the six sessions (34 papers) that dealt with such topical issues as fires at abandoned mine sites, subsidence, hydrology, mine wastes, and policy. Poster session presentations are represented by 49 papers and 92 abstracts that have been placed in the back of volumes 2, 3, and 4, consistent with the subject of that volume.
